Washington’s Goat Rocks remain one of the highlights of the PCT. The transect of Goat Rocks includes one of the highest sections of trail in Washington (barely exceeded by Lakeview Ridge near the border), Old Snowy, Packwood Glacier, and, of course, the Knife’s Edge. When the weather cooperates, the views are remarkable especially, as shown in the above and below photo, of Mt. Rainier. Even more extraordinary would be to see mountain goats.
When the weather is not so nice, this is a very exposed stretch of trail. And early in the season, snow and ice can make the Knife’s Edge very treacherous.

“She wasn't scared of vulgarity or what anyone else might say. She talked about violence, body image, lesbianism, beauty, incest, rape, maternity and even femininity unlike anybody else before her. This woman spoke to other women, without ever beating round the proverbial bush and she never lied. She'd never hesitate to openly insult her male contemporaries. And above all - she was never sorry.”
"Between the exaggerated femininity of Blondie and the gender fluidity of Patti Smith, Courtney invented her own sexy, troubled and previously unseen genre. Most of all, Courtney Love showed us that just cause we’d been born a girl, nothing was forbidden. She opened the way, with her shabby sequins, glamour, rage and an innate sex appeal.”

The Goat Rocks (above) necessitate some of the most gnarly hiking on the PCT. The photographer, David Tsai, has his own interesting backstory.
David was born and raised in China, in (his words here) "a city of metal and concrete". A few years after moving to Canada, he got his first taste of the outdoors in 10th grade when local friends took him on a hike. "I didn’t even know what a hike meant," he said. "I thought we were going to go walk in the woods or a city park, but oh boy I was in for a surprise."
His story continues, "We hiked a popular hike called Nahahi Ridge. Even though I thought I was going to either die of exhaustion or exposure the whole time, I was in love."
In 2018, David walked the PCT and has been pursuing adventures ever since. See his website for more:
