Overly Analyzing the Super Mario 3D World story intro

So I've been playing Super Mario 3D World a lot, and since I haven't seen many people talk about the opening cutscene, I wanted to do that since it contains a lot of very cute animations!

This will kinda be a scene by scene analysis with me just pointing out things I like, but if you'd like to see the full cutscene in better quality than my screenshots, you can watch it here!

The scene starts off with all of the main playable characters going for a walk under a starry sky filled with fireworks. I know blue/yellow Toads have been staples of Mario games now, since they colour code the main characters and Mario is obviously red, but its does delight me that Blue Toad is just invited on this little walk with them.

(Also if you listen closely, you can hear Mario say "Ah Princess, what a beautiful evening!" and I thought that was cute)

Their walk is interrupted by Toad noticing something offscreen, and they run ahead to see a broken pipe in the middle of the path! Mario and Luigi closely examine it, and then we get...

ACTUAL PLUMBING FROM THE SUPER MARIO BROS!

Real talk, the more the series goes on the less relevant their status as plumbers often becomes, so anything that references it or shows them actually using their plumbing skills makes me so happy. And their tools are colour coordinated!

A bunch of power ups and the green Sprixie Princess pop out, and we get some classic 2d artwork, which I absolutely adore. More of this in every 3d game, please.

The ground and pipe start rumbling, and this is where I really wanna focus on the character animation of the main four here. All four of them start looking around for the source of the tremors, and we see both Peach and Luigi lifting their hands up, Luigi looking more anxious.

Bowser suddenly pops out of the pipe and roars, startling all four main characters. We can see very different reactions from all of them.

Toad and Peach jump before covering their ears, very clearly intimidated by Bowser's roar.

Luigi is the only one to fall over completely from Bowser's appearance. He stays on the ground and holds one hand up in front of his face, flinching when Bowser roars. Dude is clearly terrified by Bowser.

Mario does jump in surprise when Bowser pops up, but he's the only one who doesn't cower when Bowser roars. Instead, he immediately gets into a confrontational pose, with one hand held out protectively towards Peach. This isn't his first time dealing with Bowser, obviously, and his instincts are to prepare for a fight and to protect Peach.

However, Bowser's target this time isn't Peach, but instead the green Sprixie Princess. A lot of people poke fun at the set up for this game - "if Princess Peach isn't in danger, why do any of them care?" - but I always like when Mario & Luigi and the others try to rescue others simply because it's the right thing to do.

Bowser turns to glare at Peach and Mario, taunting them to react. Peach and Mario are both upset by the capture of the Sprixie Princess, but neither react too strongly to Bowser. Both of them have interacted with him enough to know what he's like.

Conversely, both Luigi and Blue Toad react much more when Bowser turns to them. Blue Toad stumbles onto one foot, while Luigi cowers back further, keeping his hand raised defensively, which seems to be a common mannerism of his when he's frightened. Bowser seems to be grinning a bit more in this pose, as if he knows he can get a bigger reaction out of these two.

When Bowser disappears down the pipe, all four of them regain their bearings and jump back up, reaching out for the green Sprixie Princess.

Peach is the first one to rush forward to the pipe. She sort of flounders on the edge of the pipe before she slips down it - yeah, I don't think she had a game plan there outside of trying to rescue the green Sprixie Princess. But proactive Peach being included on the adventure is always a win!

Before Luigi even lands his startled jump, Mario is already rushing forward to follow Peach down the pipe, and Toad is right behind him. I'd say it's out of mostly courage on Mario's end, and mostly out of loyalty to the princess on Toad's.

Then we get to my favourite animation of this scene (can you tell I'm biased?)

While Mario and Toad follow Peach down the pipe, Luigi pulls himself together and slaps his cheeks twice to hype himself up. It's one of my favourite quirks for characters to do, and it's doubly endearing on characters who are timid in nature. Luigi was arguably the most started and scared by Bowser's appearance, but he knows he has to do something! Totally adopting this as a common mannerism of his

Luigi then follows the others down the pipe, and they travel to the first world of the game, bringing the opening cutscene to a close.

Fun fact; since I've only ever played this game solo, and since I main Luigi, I assumed that his animation of landing on his stomach outside of the pipe was unique to him, since he's established as quite clumsy.

But in 4 player mode, you can see all of them coming out of the pipe together, and Mario lands on his stomach too. Just thought that was a cute detail.

So that's the opening cutscene of Super Mario 3D World! It's not terribly complex, but I've always adored it for showcasing a lot of personality with the main characters, and since I didn't really see any discussions on it, I wanted to highlight it!

I do recommend you watch the cutscene since a lot of the nuances and details can't be shown in screenshots - or better yet, play the game yourself! It's a ton of fun ^^

Comparing Edd to Eddy, which of the two you would say gone through the worst shit throughout the show?

(regarding both their homelifes AND all the bad stuff across the episodes too).

putting this under the cut cuz it gets pretty miserable lmao

also, i'm including ed.

as far as the canon of the show and movie i'll go with eddy obviously because of the whole bro thing, and bc he's most often the target of everyone's rage. at least with ed and edd, there seems to be a baseline of decency and occasional kindness from the other kids. as soon as eddy rears his square head, everyone's groaning and patting at their pockets. nazz and rolf are okay towards him a couple times i guess, but it ends in disaster nonetheless.

still going strictly by canon events i'd say edd is next. he's so damn stressed the entire time that it stresses ME out. eddy and ed put him through a lot both mentally and physically. he's so frail 😭 he can't handle all that.

ending with ed just cuz he comes off as impervious to any physical harm, and blocks a lot of the mental stuff as a defense mechanism. he does whatever he can to stay in his happy place and he's gotten really good at it. not saying he doesn't go through anything or that he isn't affected, he's just the least affected of the three.

we don't have a ton to go off of in terms of their home life, which is totally fine by me. preferable in fact. as a disclaimer, it's generally shitty to compare trauma, but they're cartoon characters so i'll compare their *fictional* trauma lmao. all just my opinion etc., etc.

during the run of the show, my opinion is that ed has it the worst at home. i imagine that he's made to feel very much like the red headed step-child. it's his parents and sarah teaming up against him, blaming him for all their problems. belittling, degrading and and if he's lucky, ignoring him. his dad really just reacts to what his wife and daughter tell him, but he reacts just the same. ed is cast to the basement and they all try really really hard to pretend that he doesn't exist. maybe his dad takes pity on him from time to time and buys him a comic or a movie behind his wife's back. or maybe he doesn't. he certainly doesn't want to ruffle feathers and make himself more miserable than he already is. come on, he just got off work. and once again, ed checks out to survive. i think there would be a point where ed and edd kinda look at each other and are like "what the fuck" in response to seeing ed's treatment first hand. we kind of get something close to that in the show when ed tells them they literally took his stairs.

edd is next i guess cuz he's got such a terrible wake up call in his future. realizing that no dude, it's not even slightly normal to communicate with your parents strictly via sticky note. it's not normal for a kid to be expected to take care of every single chore and task around the house. and all the books, all the academic achievements, all the folded socks in the world aren't gonna make them love you. then dealing with his (i always use this word) DEBILITATING anxiety on top of all that? i've said it before but he's straight up burnt out by the end of the show at age 12/13.

i put eddy last bc at least during the show his home life seems relatively normal. his mom is very obviously doting and his dad is okay as long as he keeps that wrist tight. with bro gone, the immediate threat is neutralized, and he's in no hurry to unpack anything going on internally. much like the other two, there's a major realization and subsequent struggle in his future. but he's slightly more deluded than edd and is actually the last of the three to accept that his childhood was fucked up. even after bps, he kinda knows, but he's incapable of accepting that he was a victim. bruises heal, what's the big deal? bro didn't have to do all that in front of everyone though, geez. his self worth is so low that he doesn't believe his experiences can be considered abuse. he's the one that pissed his brother off, after all. and so on and so forth. anywho, if bro still lived in the house i'd probably put him at the top of the list cuz like... not to get too dark here but idk man "accidents" happen and who knows if bro could've been stopped if no one was around. my personal hc as to why bro left or was forced to leave is that there was a really close call.

What do you headcanon everyone's sexuality to be?

honestly I'm very um. whatever about sexuality headcanons. I don't think monsters in undertale see gender and sexuality as we categorize them in real life, so things are a lot more flexible. that being said, i do have Some Thoughts:

alphys is bi. like just bi, she's the only one i have a straightforward headcanon for. she even has the lil pride flag stickers on her water bottle n shit.

i like the idea that asgore and toriel are so old that they still view sexuality as something you Do rather than something you Are, like people used to do back then. i mean asgore obviously loved rudy at some point in his life and toriel has some wild stories from her youth that she'll play coy about, but neither of them would describe themselves as queer. just because that's not how they think of sexuality As A Concept.

i... don't see sans as the kind of guy with a label ? i think when you get down to it, he would technically fit the definition of demi, but he'd zone out halfway through the kind of conversation that leads to that conclusion so he just shrugs it off when you ask him and makes a bad joke to change the subject. also it varies, i like ace sans and i like bi sans too, but straight sans still feels more accurate to me than him being into dudes lmao. he does joke about kissing the homies goodnight tho ("WAIT A SECOND... platonic / non-romantic dynamics !! (not in any particular order bcus im awful at ranking)

Dynamis & King & Tithi - people whove known me for a bit probably have read some texts or threads on twitter about me rambling about them. this dynamic is the case of "there's a few frames of them together and some interactions; im gonna place them all into a pod now" and me taking the little characterization they have and stretching it so far. but idgaf !! it's my brain i get to do what i want !! i've got a sort of brother/familial dynamic with them. i remember some scenes where Tithi held onto King and adjdjdjdj it was just very adorable and it's stuck with me for a while. and we also have one of the ending scenes where Tithi is with Dynamis at Mist Mountain. Tithi is the center of this dynamic really, because King and Dynamis don't really have any direct/1-on-1 interactions in the show. i like to imagine the Tithi-Influence-Banter Dynamis and King would have; Dynamis being the more "responsible" older brother and King the more daring and reckless middle brother. Tithi takes from both of them, and Dynamis ends up scolding King when they both get into trouble. the thing i like a lot about them though too is that i get to expand on Dynamis a little more. bro has been stuck in a temple all his life and grew up having to live up to his life's purpose !! it's all over now !! let the man have fun !! heal his inner child as he King drags him to events with Tithi !! i don't think i can project my eldest sibling experience on him though. (that's for vita...sorry vita...). in canon this dynamic probably wouldn't work out the way i have it in mind because they all live in separate places, but i think even then they could have a close bond. Tithi would look up to both King and Dynamis and be happy whenever he talks to them and visits them.

Zhouxing & Bao - this one has been brewing in my brain a bit i need to talk about it more purely shitpost material (/hj). they would start off with the most one-sided beef (from Zhouxing). yeah they dont have any interactions in canon really except for that one indirect one. but again this is my brain. same guy different fonts; one gets bitches the other is bitchless; Zhouxing has to deal with another guy who basically holds the same role as him from an opposite team/group; they both lost to the same green guy Zhouxing starting the beef is sooo funny to me. obviously the two of them would be a bit hostile/suspicious of each other at first because of Beylin Temple history, but this is all after the Nemesis Crisis so there's a truce now. this new Bao guy is clearly on his level and Zhouxing needs to challenge him in everything. he has to prove that he's the superior pretty guy (by annoying the shit out of Bao). Bao doesn't catch on to what's happening for a while until Zhouxing does something crazy and Bao snaps and is like "dude what the HELL is your PROBLEM?!" (Bao is now committed to the fight). At some point after, they get along. Bao is like "dude if you just told me you wanted to fight I would've fought you." They become homies (sort of) (they still sort of hate each other) (not seriously though). this is one of those "guy who's silly and guy who's serious" kind of dynamics and that's probably why i like it a lot adjdjdjdj. Bao is more of a no-games sort of guy before the Nemesis Crisis and probably a little bit after. but those days are over !! time to put him in the middle of a found family (WHZ) and figure out how to fit in with the Rizz Blader being his rival (that he had no say in) from it.

Masamune & Lera - MLM WLW SOLIDARITYYYYY !!!! AND ALSO HOSTILITYYYYY !!!!! they're the "they didn't allow us to be friends in canon because we would be too powerful" duo. they're the meme of the lesbian flag stick figure kicking the gay flag stick figure. they will tell anyone that asks that they think the other is insufferable, but they always have a blast whenever they chat. Laz has spoken about them before and I adore them <3 I think Lera would find Masamune very annoying but also he's entertaining and he's so easily amused by everything that she can state the most random facts about anything and he'll either jaw drop in amazement or in complete utter despair. They both seem very chatty i think they could talk to each other non-stop for hours. they definitely share the beef and gossip about other people.

Tsubasa & Yu - (explodes into tears) one of the best dynamics in the entire show (and one i actually have canon to go off of !! wow !!). the way they have a rocky first start but later develop as a duo with a really close bond is so :(( tears in me eyes :(( Tsubasa and Yu not seeing eye-to-eye throughout their interactions in Fusion, but later getting along and supporting each other after the Dark Nebula falls. Yu starts to stick to Tsubasa and values him very much, and vice versa (which makes Tsubasa's conflicts in Metal Masters more heartbreaking for me </3) . They are the brothers ever <3 Tsubasa picked up a stray cat (fox, really) and he follows him around sometimes <3

Dynamis & Pluto - deity ik you don't give a fuck about them but I DO !! AND IM GOING TO BE UNWELL FOR A MOMENT !! (as you can tell i am heavily influenced by Alexis) (and also i like to grasp for straws) (i am going off by both implied/very far-reached canon and solar swap au). this will probably be the shortest explanation for those reasons. and also i cant put my thoughts into words to how these guys make me feel. i just. the. the way that those two in canon know each other and have had to known each other for years. they knew their destinies and that they inevitably would fight each other at the end of it all. they've definitely got some crazy history and it's FUCKED UP that the show didnt do anything with that (i say for the thousandth time)

I never really got into the strategy in pokemon battles, so I get beat pretty easily in battles against others.

Until one of my friends called me bad and now its my priority to be the strongest only when I'm fighting them.

F: Fight | What is their behavior in a tickle fight like?

Foolish: he is so so so extremely giggly and vocal!! foolish is just a happy lil dude, he's always smiling and laughing and just speaking about anything and everything. he would protest occasionally, but if he's being tkled it would be more of commenting on what was happening. ("ihihit tihihickles!" "why dohohoes ihit tihihickle sohoho much?!", etc.). and honestly, i feel like it would be the same when foolish is a ler - just commenting on the things he's doing to the lee, commenting on how sensitive they are, commenting on their laugh....just simple little observations that would turn any lee into a fluttered giggly mess 😵‍💫

Punz: he's a lil trickster I think. if he's a lee but he wants to win, he'd act like he got hurt or make plead hard enough to make the ler question the tks and pause, and then he'd strike and get the upper hand. most of his friends know this trick by now so it never works after the first time, but it's always amusing to watch Punz do it to someone new. as a ler he's cutesy but ruthless - he would enter it with softer tks, nice lil teases, and then when he finds a good spot he pounces on it and exploits it like there's no tomorrow

(In this scenario I'm gonna just answer as if they hid one of their friends phones)

Foolish: he would absolutely play innocent - like I said before, he just sounds so so innocent (sometimes he makes these faces though when he's lying and he is practically visibly dripping with guilt). i think he would hang on long enough in the beginning of the tks, telling himself that it couldnt get that hard to deal with. turns out though, when he gets his hips squeezed mercilessly, he's cackling and barking out apologies and pleading, but by then it's too late - even when he throws the phone onto the bedsheets

Punz: blondie here would definitely be more nonchalant with the whole situation. he'd pretend he had absolutely no idea what they were speaking about, keeping the act up even as he feels fingers creeping along his sides. the ler feels the phone hidden in his hoodie pocket, sending punz into frantic giggles as he shoves his hands in the pocket to hold it there and keep it from the ler. however, the ler uses this to their advantage and shoves their hands in, digging into punz's tummy until he's got tears in his eyes and agrees to let go of the phone

K: Killer Move | As a ler, do they have special skills to use against their lees and drive them crazy with?

Foolish: he's strong as hell. i mean look at him....he's so muscley and dude bro built. he could pin someone before the lee even knew what was happening, not even giving them a chance to fight back. he also is incredibly innocent looking and sounding, which he uses to his advantage to pout and convince the lee to let him tk them

Punz: I think this kind of goes back to the trickster act. he's very cute and cuddly and just looks so precious (I've compared him to dream with the whole puppy dog look). so he uses it to his advantage to get what he wants. obviously like i said though it really only works for one or two times before he's figured out, but that's how he would gain the upper hand if he could. he also always insists that his tks will be nice, and he's just so nice everyone believes him - big mistake. he's ruthless through and through for sure 😈 (he can do nice tks if the lee wants them, though. he's very very good at soft tks)

I have an angsty one. Ok, so skeleton discovers that S/O's parents are part of an anti-monster group that have hurt a lot of monster recently. When skeleton tried to confront them, the dad says that when little shits have gone this far to try to stop them, people tend to disappear, looking straight at his brother who's waiting in the car. Main reaction?

Undertale Sans - When he realises the asshole just threat his brother, his pupils disappears. He doesn't do anything to hold him back as he's going back inside the house. Sans won't tell anything to Papyrus yet, so he doesn't worry, but he will insist a lot that Papyrus stays with him a few days and will talk to S/O about this. He doesn't want to look to scared, but he is scared. He is so scared and he's realising he messed up big. S/O is horrified when they learned that their dad did that, and believes him right away. They are going to deal with this to the police station.

Undertale Papyrus - He takes a step back, quite shocked. But, uh, the second Sans sees his bro is uncomfortable, he teleports in front of him, looking very tense. Your dad is just insulting them as Sans drags Papyrus back to the car. They're going to talk to S/O about this, and man, Sans will not let go before they do something. This man is crazy, if you don't call the police, he will.

Underswap Sans - You think you can impress him because you're bigger and scary? Lol. The second you dad leans over him to scare him, Blue kicks him in the nuts and calls for his colleagues help from the police station. He recorded everything anyway. He already said S/O he would go see them, now he can show S/O what his dad really is. He's not worry. He's a police officer, and threats against laws protectors are taken very seriously.

Underswap Papyrus - Oh wow. He didn't expect that and he just a little wants to cry right now. A little lot actually. Honey is trying to back off, more and more uncomfortable, as your dad keeps threatening him. When he pushes him off the stairs, that's too much for Blue who's going for the guy's head. That's agression, bitch, you're under arrest. Honey is quite scared the next few days, but Blue assures him he can't do anything against him. They still have to talk to S/O though, but Honey doesn't want to cause problem so he prefers to stay silent. So, obviously, Blue talked to S/O anyway. S/O was not happy to learn their dad hurt their husband.

Underfell Sans - "the fuck ya're saying asshole?" He grabs the man by the collar, very angry. That's a dangerous game your dad is playing. The guy is far from inoffensive and threatening his brother is one of the things he absolutely won't stand with. Ironically, Edge is the one stopping him from hurting S/O's dad, because he would be the one with problems. But the man looks scared enough by now, he doesn't worry too much. Like he could stand any chance against Edge anyway lol.

Underfell Papyrus - No warning. Headbutt. Edge won't let an asshole tries to intimidate him when he's bigger, stronger and scarier. He's going to teach the guy a lesson he won't forget by breaking several of his ribs and his nose. Red is cheering from the car. He doesn't know why his brother is beating an old man but he seems to have a good reason so he doesn't care! Though, uh, S/O was not exactly happy to learn what Edge did, even with his justification. Though Edge threats the guy to tell the cops everything about his little monster torture business and that prevented him from complain furthermore. Two can play this game. Edge is better at it, that's all.

Horrortale Sans - Oak was going in good faith to try to change the guy's mind after a bad family diner when he was an ass to him and his brother. But this? This is not an apologize. Oak pupils dilates like a cat ones when that random dude threats his brother. Then he growls, suddenly looking way bigger and scarier than he actually is. He has enough self control to not attack, but the look of pure terror of the guy is enough to know he won't try to bother his brother and him. And if he does? Well, don't worry, he still has his own axe somewhere and he knows how to hide a body.

Horrortale Papyrus - "I CAME HERE SO YOU CAN APOLOGIZE TO ME FOR THE WAY YOU TREATED ME AND MY BROTHER YESTERDAY AND I WON'T LEAVE BEFORE YOU DO SO." Willow is not buying his shit and he's not scared. He grabbed the man arm and he is holding really hard right now. You want threats? How about the fact he could literally break your arm in two if he really wanted too? Your dad is not happy, and screaming. And obviously, Oak knew something was off and teleported and put a blaster next to his head. Relulanctly, you dad apologize. Willow smiles at him. "THANK YOU. IF YOU TRY ANYTHING AGAINST ME OR MY BROTHER I'M GOING TO BREAK YOUR SKULL LIKE A COCONUT. OK, BYE!" And on this, they leave the house. The man is quite terrified. Willow will talk with S/O about this in the evening, so they can find a solution.

Swapfell Sans - He straight laughs to his face. "WELL, I WON'T STOP YOU FROM TRYING. BUT KNOW THAT IF YOU SOMEHOW HURT MY BROTHER, I'LL MAKE SURE POLICE FINDS LITTLE PIECES OF YOU EVERYWHERE IN TOWN, LIKE A PUZZLE. GOOD EVENING, STUPID HUMAN." He salutes and leaves, very proud of himself and not scared at all. Rus is capable to protect himself just fine, and if by mistake he crosses his way first, oh well, he will be dead so who cares. Of course, he doesn't say anything to S/O, he doesn't need them to worry.

Swapfell Papyrus - Rus chuckles and turns to the car. "hey bro, the guy says he's going to kill you if we keep messing with his stuff." "TELL HIM HE'S NOT THE FIRST ONE AND THAT WE'RE GOING TO KEEP MESSING WITH HIS STUFF ANYWAY. AND PLEASE TRY TO KILL ME NOW, I'M SO BORED I'M GOING TO DIE." "you heard him. my bro is waiting for you. that's rude to make him wait." Your dad is hesitating, but his ego is stronger and he decides to go fight Nox anyways. Rus can't believe the guy is that stupid. Nox leaves him crying on the sidewalk with a few broken bones, looking very satisfied. Welp. He's not telling S/O his brother beats their dad.

Fellswap Gold Sans - Don't... Don't do this. Wine can't stand people threatening his brother and that pissed him off really bad. So bad he points a gun between your dad's eyes and asks him to repeat this if he dares. Fortunately, your dad can recognise a danger and apologize to him. Great. Now you will dismantle your little hate group, and if you don't do it before the next day? Well, he will have to pay a visit to his gun again, right? Your dad is so scared he's doing it in front of him.

Fellswap Gold Papyrus - Welp. Your dad barely finishes his sentence that he is shot in the shoulder. That's the only warning he'll get. After this, Wine gets out of the car and do the same thing as above. You're not scaring Coffee. Never. Now apologize.

Why was the Prequel announced sooo early? Why is Jared being super dumb? Why might his tweets cause SERIOUS issues for the future of the prequel? Why should Jensen and Dannel be livid and actually quite worried as CEOs?

I see lots of people, Jared being the main one, super confused as to why the Prequel was announced in Deadline when apparently its still just an idea? Surely its further down the road, development-wise, than Deadline and Jensen and Daneel are saying? Surely Jared has been left out of months and months of development of this show??? Well, no. Not really. This is what i think, as someone who works in TV development...

A lot of questions have occurred as to why Jared may not have known about the Ackles’ prequel, and yes it might be because they haven’t talked, but let’s look at this from an industry perspective…

Of course the project may already have NDAs attached to it, and as it seems to be in the incredibly early stages, there may not even be anything to the project right now. Working in TV development, you can have big announcements in the Trade publications (such as Deadline) with just an idea for a project with maybe one high profile talent attached. When the company’s ive worked for announce a project in it’s really early stages, without even a script and just an idea but also with IMPORTANT TALENT ATTACHED, it is for one reason: finance. The prod company and the Trade magazine work together to announce the project and it’s all planed. 

So I would guess that maybe Jensen and Daneel’s prod company are looking for extra financing? That is always why the companies ive worked for have made super early announcements like this, without even a script or an entire treatment written. If you announce a project super early but there is big talent attached, then big industry financiers may read, see the project has legs and has buzz around it already, and plonk in their money early on. 

I know it seems like if Deadline announce a project then that infers that lots has been done to develop the show already, but especially with the pandemic and the industry not doing well from a dev and prod point of view, and especially because Jensen and Daneel’s prod company hasn’t made anything yet (even if it does have a co-production deal with Warner Bros television), they still might need to get financing during the early stages of the project. Anyway, it makes sense that very little has been done on the prequel show, and they just want early buzz for financiers. So they got their PR team to talk to Deadline and Deadline and Warner Bros TV and J&D’s prod company’s PR team set up a date for the article to go out to get optimal buzz in line with when financing needs to get off the ground. 

I don’t know, but I’m sure J&D’s prod company paid a lot for the spin-off rights / general supernatural IP. So that’s a lot of sunken costs already. Also, even with The CW on board, the industry is pretty shaky right now and they still might need early financing from international distributers. 

Anyway, all I’m saying is that lots of times, when a project so early in development gets a Trade publication announcement, it’s to secure financing for the project, or to raise the awareness of a new production company, like J&A’s company. Maybe they have a whole slate of projects and are looking for co-producers, and need some legit PR to play with the other big lads in the industry (however, Chaos Machine could do with like… i mean the bare minimum of a website,, unless anyone can see their website? i cant find one?) Maybe they just want to focus on the SPN prequel. But even so, why do they need money, you ask?

If the CW is involved, and if Warner Bros television is co-producing, then why do the Ackles’s prod company need money? Surely the CW can support them and make the show?! Well… i mean, yes they could. But the Ackles wouldn’t necessarily WANT that. You see, whichever company funds the show, gets most of the creative rights to the show. The big issue with SPN was always that the CW/Warner Bros TV probably had things like ‘the final cut privalege’, and could ALWAYS have the final say on scripts. Having been through that on SPN, Jensen needs his production company to retain creative control over the IP and the rights, and for that to happen is prod co NEEDS to fund a majority of the costs. So the Ackles’ need to secure a heck of a lot of financing as a separate entity to the CW. This will mean they might get financiers, other prod cos, distribution companies, and such on board, just by an early announcement of a big project that already has legs and a buzz around it and YOU CAN HELP GET IT MADE AND GET A SLICE OF THE PROFITS ONCE IT’S MADE. See how great this project is ALREADY? Give us some money to help us retain the creative rights and get it made, then you get whatever percentage of the show’s profits. A great investment right? Look at our willing and lovely fanbase! We’re like a big family! A big, happy, fa — *enter Jared with a bulldozer*

SO. With this PR disaster from Jared’s stupid rage tweets like he’s a child, what’s the situation now? I mean, all press is good press… kind of? 

I expect the announcement has something to do with money. Either the project needs money or J&D’s production company needs money. I expect the Ackles are looking for financing, but now is their lovely PR stunt to try to get the project financially off the ground, or at least the PR stunt to try to make sure THE ACKLES retain creative rights by majorly funding the project in jeopardy? 

It depends. Certainly Jared storming in and destroying the idea of a solid and family-like fanbase is going to hamper things. Jared destroying the brotherly vibe, a central theme of the IP, is going to be an issue, but the statements J&J put out to end the drama, and Deadline’s unbelievably obvious ‘solve the drama PR’ where they wrote about the drama ‘All’s well that ends well. After some Supernatural drama that mobilized the series’ legions of fans Thursday night and Friday morning, showcasing the series’ massive social media reach, the #spnfamily is happily back together after a heart-to-heart between Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki.’ (https://deadline.com/2021/06/jared-padalecki-supernatural-prequel-reaction-bummed-gutted-the-winchesters-jensen-ackles-the-cw-1234781475/) will help. Side note, Deadline writing the announcement article with the Ackles to help them get good PR for a project, then having to write an article to solve the bad PR that was caused by their original ‘this’ll be great PR’ article is pretty hilarious. 

Basically, I don’t know if this’ll really affect the reason for the article: getting the Ackle’s money for the project. Whether it will affect the project or how much creative control the Ackles can keep if the CW does have to step in and fund it, I don’t know. But Jared obviously has no idea about how television development works, and certainly has no idea that shows so early in development have these trade publication announcements for financing (a pretty obvious and known-about thing to anyone who works at a film or tv company). Jared also seemed to think that BECAUSE it was announced in Deadline, THAT MUST MEAN that the project was more than an idea with some creatives attached, which again shows that he doesn’t understand how projects in development work and why they’re so often announced when there isn’t even a proper treatment let alone script. The dude is obviously clueless, and there is J&D trying to run a production company which pulls PR moves like this regularly, as an industry standard.

So, even if this doesn’t jeopardise the projects financing, and therefore the control the Ackle’s prod company has over the project, the personal effect this will have on Jensen could be huge. Jared, with his stupid uninformed idea that he’s been left out of loads of development of a project just because it was announced in a magazine, could be read by Jensen as really putting his baby of a project in danger. The article was about money, and what if Jared’s tweets mean that they won’t be able to fund it? What if the CW does have to majority fund it and therefore keep creative control like they did with SPN? Like, this is Jensen and his wife’s COMPANY. Which they’ve already sunken costs into? Like… this is their FINANCIAL FUTURE Jared has stuck his foot into? That article WAS ABOUT MONEY FOR THEIR COMPANY. OF COURSE IT WAS. And now Jared has put their company, and financial future into question potentially? DUMB IDIOT. 

Anyway, that’s how announcements like this work, this is why they normally happen when a project is so early in its development it seems silly to even ‘announce’ anything. Someone forward this to Jared plz and thanks. xxx
