hello and welcome to my twisted mind.... i'll try to condense the 10k google doc of lore into something passable here. BASICALLY all of these ww1 guys are part of a web of interconnecting stories that intersect and span before/during/after the war. the main group are the four rugby boys who live in Stirling, Scotland and are drawn into the war in 1916 following the military service act...

from left to right we've got connor, james, peter, and johnny! excuse my bad handwriting but here's the jist of their dynamics. they play rugby together before everything goes to shit (peter is captain, james is the star player, johnny is stupidly reckless, and connor keeps getting into fights) a group of good guys, if a bit rowdy. they join up with the 14th Service Battalion of the Argyll & Sutherlands and spend most of the war fighting on the western front!

two old sketches of johnny and peter..... i think these r from like spring 2022? anyway i could go into more detail about their interpersonal issues but it's a lot and i feel like that could b its own post... ultimately connor gets killed taking out a stormtrooper (another oc) and peter loses a leg about a week later. james contracts influenza and gets sent home but eventually recovers, leaving johnny to finish out the war by himself. their group is definitely not the same after the war, and peter & james in particular really struggle with ptsd in the following years.

AND THE OFFICERS. WOO. aka toxic old man yaoi aka Lt Kincaide and Lt Irvine. these two spend like three full decades being catty and hating each other before they end up getting together LOL it goes something like this: kincaide is from a wealthy family, irvine is not, they meet at school and end up going to the same military academy prewar. they rly hate each other from the beginning and would probably just be petty rivals HOWEVER. irvine is sneaking around somewhere he 1000% should not be and catches kincaide in a very compromising position w another man. irvine intends to tattle but kincaide blackmails irvine into keeping quiet- irvine is there solely on scholarship and kincaide has enough social clout to ruin his military career. basically if kincaide goes down he's taking irvine with him.

that sets the stage for a decades long contentious relationship- partially bc they just keep bumping into each other. irvine obessively tries to find ways to end kincaide's career and kincaide loooooves fucking with him. individually they're very competent people- kincaide is an especially beloved officer even if he is a bit of a romantic snob, and irvine is insanely effective if a bit rigid and cold. these guys got issues on top of issues but proximity eventually leads to a healthy rivalry that becomes something like friendship that becomes basically being married. by the end of the war they are staples in each others lives but they dont get together until a decade or so after it's all over... they each take some damage during the war and spend their later years taking care of each other :')

there is so much i could say about them individually and the deep lore but im such a horrendous writer. also this is like a quarter of all of their stuff minus about four characters. the ideal format for this story would be a 300 chapter webcomic/graphic novel but i have neither time nor skill nor attention span for such a sprawling story so it'll just be random illustrations and blurbs in the tags. and my google docs. if any of this has interested ppl i've made a rugby boy playlist and an officers playlist bc im insane. you can get the vibes of their stories a lot better.

save for the horses gulping from the shallow river, the temporary resting place is far too quiet. with the hot sun beating down on their backs, most of the members have split off to find easy targets work, and ellis'd be with them if not for the camp chores heaped upon him. one of the conditions for being welcomed back into the fold, so complaints can't be voiced, though they can certainly be thought. “ how long you gonna tiptoe around and act like i don't exist ? ” finally finds the gumption to ask as the freshly washed pots tumble from his toned arms and to their designated spot with a careless clang. vivid blues flicker over in other's direction but don't dare land directly upon them, not wishing to witness any contempt that may lay in wait on those familiar features. “ i'm back, ain't i ? and i think i've said ' sorry ' damn near a hundred times already. ”

next i would like to introduce eddy caldwell! he is 16 in 1955, and his birthday is october 18th! he has a mother and a brother, niall, both who are relatively absent in his life, and he never knew his father. he came down with polio when he was eleven, in 1949, and he has weakness and slight paralysis in his right (left from the front) leg, so he wears a leg brace and occasionally uses a crutch on bad days.

he and pembroke became sick and moved to saint margaret’s around the same age, so they bonded through their sense of displacement and loneliness, and soon became very, very close friends. eddy struggled with his feelings of isolation and neglect, and pembroke was quick to swoop in and make him feel loved and needed. eddy is extremely protective of pembroke and gets really suspicious whenever someone else tries to get close. (he BARELY tolerated it when thatcher and pembroke became friends, but over time he started to like thatcher so it was okay.)

eddy is....well, he’s....a character. he doesn’t like authoritarian figures and starts to break out in hives if he hasn’t misbehaved that day. he loves to stir the pot and cause trouble, and quite likes to scare the younger kids and put on a dramatic show. maybe it’s to cover up his terrible mental health, and he only opens up to people he feels extremely comfortable with. he definitely has the capacity to be kind and gentle, but it just doesn’t come naturally to him.

Gaetano was used to that weight, he carried Luigi to bed many times. He remembers how he used to let him nap on his lap during christmas lunch, tired out from playing with his new toys.

“Jake,” I said reprovingly. “Anyone can be an American if they want to. I don’t know why they would though.”

“Were you born in America?” Jake continued, “And were your parents American and everything? Mum and dad say you’re not properly from a country unless your family has lived there for ages.”

“Unfortunately, it seems I fit those criteria.” Said Siegfried. “I must take up the burden of being an American.”

“You don’t look it though,” Jake persisted. “Americans are orange. And blond.”

“That’s Donald Trump.” I said.

oneshot ft. a couple of historical characters from caveclan lore because i was in the mood for angst

Sometimes Emberstar missed it.

Sometimes she missed the days when it was just her and Minkstar, when they were just Embershine and Minksong. When they were running on the same timer as those they cared about, when their hearts could be trusted to stay silent were they to stop.

When they were apprentices and warriors and deputies, when they joked about being leaders together but never really meant it. When they made promises they thought they wouldn't have time to break, when they fell in love and were sure it would outlive them.

Emberstar recalled getting annoyed with how distant Sunstar had been when she acted as his deputy.

She understood now, of course. Eternity was a very long time.

She found herself hoping that each death would be her last, despite knowing that she would know when the end came near.

She found herself drifting away from her Clanmates, barely remembering their names but noticing all too sharply the features shared with their long-gone ancestors.

This was SnowClan and the cats under Minkstar were CliffClan. Emberstar knew this. And yet the Clan she had grown up with was SnowClan, too, and this wasn't that.

Wasn't it funny, she mused, how words and especially names could change their meaning until you became utterly disconnected from what they stood for?

Tensions were getting higher every day. Emberstar was tempted to start a war just to feel something, to fight in a battle alongside cats she knew as allies. To do something so pointlessly terrible that the stars would finally have to claim her.

Of course, it was Minkstar who attacked first, in the end. Emberstar was all too eager to fight back.

The war was long and violent and awful, but Emberstar enjoyed it perhaps a little too much. These were the highest stakes she'd seen in a while, and she wasn't about to give that up just yet.

The war had lasted five years.

Emberstar and Minkstar met in the aftermath of a particularly bloody battle. They had each died at least once in the past two days alone--their deaths had become as routine as hunger.

They'd killed each other before. It was nothing new.

By all means, this battle would end the same as all the others.

And yet--

And yet, looking in each other's eyes, both of them knew, deep down, that this would be different.

This death would be their last, and they knew it.

So they fought, and fought, and fought until they physically couldn't anymore. Neither had sustained injuries that would grant them a particularly quick death, but nonetheless they were too badly injured to speed up the process.

As they lay next to each other, dying and bloodstained with fur between their claws and corpses scattered around them, Minkstar spoke.

It was obviously difficult for her to get the words out, with her injuries, but she managed.

"Do you remember?"

Emberstar turned her head as much as she could. "What?"

"When we were warriors." Minkstar continued. "We... we promised."

And Emberstar, of course, remembered. "We'd die together and enter the stars side by side. We'd... we'd never be apart."

Minkstar nodded, laughing weakly. "I guess that worked out, one way or another."

"I guess it did." Emberstar met Minkstar's eyes. "I'll see you in StarClan, then."

"Deal." And Minkstar was silent, and so was Emberstar, and finally, finally the war was over.
