we finally reached the village. we’re waiting for the night, so we can get the job done. i’m sure it’s not a strong demon, after all he hurt just a couple of villagers and they’re alright now, thankfully.

anyway, uzui-san is very fast! i can barely keep up with him, but he’s of good company. i discovered his wives prepared a bento for me too, and it was my favourite food too! i was so happy while eating it, but don’t worry, your ohagi are still in my top three.

the young slayers with us are pretty good, so stop saying they’re all useless and stupid, please. they’re all doing their best and they will get stronger and better at fighting. i know that for sure.

that was all for now. i’m looking forward to see you again, i’m sure the mission will be over soon. after all, there’s a pillar with us.

“sorai,” sanemi calls for his crow and gives him a little bag, with some of your favourite sweets. “take this to [y/n], make sure it is delivered with care,” he asks as he pats his crow gently.

that’s his way to answer you. you send letters, sanemi sends gifts. always.

when he’s the one away on missions, he makes sure to send you special gifts, like accessories or simply food. and he waits patiently for your letters.

he keeps them all, secured in a drawer. he usually kisses the letter and then puts it away, going sitting back on the engawa, staring up at the sky.

do you have any tips for drawing expressions? it’s one thing that I always notice about your art, I love how expressive your characters are.

which ALSO MEANS--HA, YOU ACTIVATED MY SPECIAL INTEREST TRAP CARD i am now going to talk at you all for far too long about it >:) buckle up!

prefacing this by saying i Love animation, this makes me biased as hell with where i get my sources + how i study art. anyway!

i think my biggest #1 tip is don't be afraid to get goofy with it--characters don't have to look cool and stoic all the time, they can be silly! if an expression reads better, but looks a little off-model, do it anyway! make that guy look weird!

i draw little thumbnail expressions a Lot, whether for actual art or for just fun doodling. i don't have any recent ones to hand-- but here's some from a while ago. they help a ton to figure out what works quickly without worrying about actual facial features

they also help to see if i can push an expression further, it's easier to test out weird things on a tiny round doodle and then translate that into an actual drawing later on. pushing expressions To The Limits is a really good exercise in itself!

gonna put the rest under the cut bc it's getting long & i have a lot more to say

ok this in itself is a whole topic i can go on about for hours, but i'll try to keep it semi brief--i Love considering how different characters would show emotions! how one character would express sadness, how that would be different to another, how one character would smile vs. another, stuff like that!

related, giving characters individual expression quirks. twitch's :3 mouth & lazy lidded eyes if you could see them anyway & Very Smug Eyebrows, while grace has heavy low eyebrows & sad puppy eyes & usually looks at least 10% unsure at all times. it makes every single twitch smile look slightly not genuine and makes grace look. well. you know. the quirks are really fun to think of, and it makes drawing expressions feel a lot more fun when you personalise them!!

expressions can be easier to think of when you put characters in scenarios & consider how they'd react. it can also help to think of the character Moving/talking, instead of as a static image. mini comics or just adding dialogue to art helps a lot with this, i've only just started doing it and i'm having a blast!!

ok this one is weird and hard to explain and might only be applicable to me bc i can't see images in my brain-- but i'll throw it out there just in case! lots of artists make faces in the mirror to reference their own expressions, but it's never worked for me

i Do still act stuff out in my brain & make faces irl, but instead of doing it in the mirror, i just make the expression & consider how my face is moving in Words? ok for example This Comic, last panel for twitch--i'd run through the dialogue in my head and move around how i feel like they would, and list it off in Words--raised eyebrows, closed eyes, tilted head, etc etc. then i have a framework to base the expression on! and i don't need to stare into my own face in the mirror for reference. no mirror needed at all, actually. win/win. i do this for body language too

(yes this makes you look insane btw. sorry. if you do it too long best case scenario you get very dextrous eyebrows and worst case scenario you might start making cartoon character faces irl (or both) (i'm both))

not sure how much it helps specifically with expressions outside of animation, but it's a fun exercise--learning the limits of a character's face, animation calls it squash & stretch. drawing a face in the two most extreme states. so on character expression sheets you'll see weird faces like this⤵️ that's what that is

another exercise, i always have a ton of art saved that i like the expressions of. usually a lot of concept art for films. i'll do studies of them & redraw them, and/or take ocs and redraw them with those expressions! it's a great way to look at how other artists do stuff and yoink bits you like.

you'll hear this a lot if you look up Any art tips, but references & studies are great. i get a lot of inspo from disney concept art bc their artists are very talented people, but currently i hope disney studios' own hubris eats it alive. i want to see mickey mouse buried in a hole, the rat bastard. anyway some places i personally take inspiration from:

i look at a lot of animation concept art, some good sources are characterdesignreferences, livinglineslibrary, there's pdfs of animation art books all over the place too.

specific concept artists i like are jin kim & shiyoon kim !! they do Great expressions.

outside of film industry, tealin and tracy butler of lackadaisy cats are some inspirations! tracy butler has a great expressions tutorial here

if you find this stuff interesting & like reading, the illusion of life by ollie johnston & frank thomas is an incredible insight into the thought process behind stuff like this! there's a pdf here, unfortunately just a scanned copy but worth a read if you like this stuff!! specifically chapters 'character development', 'animating expressions & dialogue', and 'acting & emotions'

As your not a big fan of fantasy books in general. What drew you into loving asoiaf? What got you hooked?

now that I'm invested in asoiaf I do genuinely like the fantasy elements of the story, but the stuff that really pulled me in was the human drama and political intrigue etc. I love the character work, almost all of the POVs feel fully realised and subvert typical tropes in really interesting ways (imo). I like the inter-generational drama (the reasons I like succession are v similar to the reasons I like the Lannisters), like if I want to understand Jaime and Cersei and Tyrion I can look to Tywin, and if I want to understand Tywin I can look to Tytos, and if I was to understand Tytos I can look to Gerold, like it's a russian doll of intergenerational trauma what more could a girl want.

and on that note I really like the scope! GRRM obviously feels this need to account for all details minor and major, so that even with everything that's already on the page there's room to extrapolate so much more. i mean here I am writing who knows how many words about a fake 20-episode long robert's rebellion tv series lol like this all happened before the series even starts and yet I hardly need to make anything up bc there is so much to draw on just based on all the random little details we've got here and there from characters reflecting on the same events from different angles, and trying to piece together portraits of the people who died based on the recollections of those on the page who remember them..... it is so fun)

and yeah usually I prefer to read about that kind of thing on a smaller scale but the drama that plays out in AGOT is so engaging that upon initiation I didn't find it so much of a chore to keep track of all the various houses and lands etc in order to understand the full implications of each thing that happened - it felt like it was worth the effort. generally it's the 'keeping track' of it all that I find grating about fantasy bc I really want to just get on with the story rather than keep on top of a hundred magic systems and sub-species of pixie.

and obvs asoiaf is low fantasy rather than high fantasy, i.e. there aren't intricate systems to the magic and or complicated genus for each of the creatures, so that made it feel a lot more accessible for me as someone who just isn't very interested in those kinds of details. Dany's magic is made up as she goes along, it's never explained, and that's the same for pretty much all the fantastical elements - it's very show don't tell. and even though when you count it all up there are quite a lot of fantastical features and subplots, taken together with the rest of the story it's more like.... seasonings I wouldn't usually choose but ended up liking just fine in this overall dish lol

and finally asoiaf just really appealed to me from a fannish perspective! I really hate when you're trying to dig deeper with a work and you quickly start to realise that the writer(s) just weren't thinking that hard. it feels like striking concrete with a spade, like it's a one-sided conversation rather than something both the writer and the reader are participating in. I think some fans are perfectly fine with that and good for them - who cares if the author built the work to sustain your analysis if you're just having fun doing it - but for me it's a complete killjoy, I end up v frustrated and like the work isn't worth my time

so here's GRRM who is so fixated on the finer details that he's churned out a history book like 700 pages long and a bunch of short stories and also another history book just to add a bit more texture to the main story. and I don't have to worry about network input or co-writers or actors' intentions or whatever other external conflict or influence cos for better or worse it's all his story. and that just suits me better lol, it's one guy and his shitty computer, and me reading the shit he wrote with it. pure and simple living in the moment no phones in sight

Thinking about the acrilics nail thing with fem sanji and nami and as a person who also works with their hands a lot I hate when my nails get too long (and that for me is if I look at my palms and can see my nails I will cut them) but a friend of mine loves doing nail art and I love it when she does my nails bc she makes them short bc she knows that I hate them long

So back to my fave girlies, Nami sees that Sanji is stressed and sad bc of the nails so she asks her to let her do it again, Sanji apologizes for ruining them but Nami quickly shut it down saying that it doesn't matter that she wants to try a new thing and Sanji bein the simp she is lets her

Nami goes for a short nail length and decides to try and do these watercolor effect on her nails (look it up if you don't know they're really cool) since she doesn't have a lot of space to do anything with it and it ends up looking like the ocean, Nami tried to do the all blue for her

It really could be any ocean but Sanji is crying of pure happiness and love and just overwhelmed with her gf taking into account her discomfort over her nails but also doing something to accommodate her and representing something she loves

It's really cute and Sanji goes through this phase where you awkwardly do everything without really touching anything so you don't ruin your nails but after a while she does everything normally again and Nami couldn't be happier than seeing her gf happy with something she made

AWWWWWW This is so cute. I'm sure they love spending time together while Nami does her nails!!!! It's not always sea themed btw!!! Nami is good with nails but she is not the BEST at drawing cute tiny things there, so she ends up calling Usopp (Yes I am making this lesbian Sanusona honoring my name deal with me please) bc their other girlfriend is the best artist known to mankin (I don't accept other opinions srry). And Usopp is THRILLED because now she can like. Draw little eggs. And bread. And fishes. In Sanji's nails. Like. She just has a whole set of acrylic nails that's just food-themed. It's adorable. She is the cutest, prettiest cook in the world so she has to have the most beautiful nails!!!!!!!

Please, that phase is so funny. You have to learn how to do basic stuff-- Me too. I mean. It's actually the first time I get acrylic nails and the first day is weird but tbh it's not as bad as people make it seem. But Sanji would be okay because she has shorter nails and she learns that! Wow!!!!!!! You can live normally with them!!!!!! But the first days she is calling Usopp to do everything for her bc she is scared of something happening to her nails and Nami is there rolling her eyes like "If it happens we just fix it, sweetie, don't worry".

I am sure tho that in the middle of a fight she would end up somehow breaking one of the nails and she'd be. So dramatic and angry abt it to whoever is fighting with her. Because her hands are now even more precious to her!!!! She has art her girlfriends made for her!!!!!! So ofc she is angry. The guy she is fighting laughs at her like "Hahaha ofc a girl would get so whiny for breaking her nails!!!!" and she just. Beats the shit out of him with so much pent-up anger and the fury of the gods on her side.

When the fight ends she goes to Nami and Usopp like *teary eyes* "Please fix my nails, my dearest, my treasure, please-" and Usopp and Nami complain abt her being dramatic but it's actually so cute that she appreciates their work so much.

Henry thoughts but I feel like my HC for him is so jank in comparison to others bc he's like. Not The robotics guy he doesn't do the engineering despite that actually being a pretty major thing when it comes to canon

And the REASON it's like that is literally just bc my Henry HC is held together with duct tape and hope since I made a lot of it up after just looking at the game lore

But yeah have some Henry (and William) thoughts:

-William handled robotics while Henry made them less nightmare fuel, Henry's talents lended themselves to character design and development. The less involved Henry is the weirder the animatronics get, which is why you can go from something cute like Freddy and Co to some freaks of nature like the human animatronics in SL

-he knows the basics though, he can preform maintenance and repair them fine but he wasn't great at building them from scratch or developing them on his own. He had lots of IDEAS but not the ability to bring them to actualization

-also had a springlocking Incident, ironically due to William's own accident making him worry for the other's safety. Thankfully it was while he was testing the suit for maintenance and not when he was in public and performing

-springlocking messed one of his legs up pretty bad, hence the use of a cane. Decorated it to make it a little more fun looking bc he kinda hated it plain. He can walk without it and preform in fredbear but it'll start hurting pretty bad if he's not careful.

-him and his wife got along well but they never really loved each other very deeply. Henry never really got over his thing with Will in college and being with his wife never made him feel the same way as that so he kinda just had those feelings on the backburner for like, years, and now he's kinda fucking weird because of it.

-t4t with wife, works out because half the reason either of them got married was they wanted a kid. Henry carried, decided he fucking hated how being pregnant felt, and proceeded to get his whole damn uterus removed as soon as possible after having charlie. She was the light of both their lives though and I don't think they let their own lacking romantic feelings affect how they raised her.

-while he was generally pretty warm and inviting interacting with guests he did not fuck around when it came to the legal and business side of things. Refused to let anything bad happen to his company, it was his child almost as much as his ACTUAL child, hence all the comments about liability and the like that come up throughout basically every game. You will not get him in trouble with your silly little injuries, no sir.

-he always enjoyed drawing springbonnie and fredbear together. Years in the future even after finding out what William did he still doodles them on occasion.

-A solid cook, I think he liked making things and then bringing leftovers over to the aftons

-physical affection above all else, he loves hugs and would pick up the kids in his arms on the regular. Mike got tired of it as he got to his mean teen phase, much to Henry's disappointment.

-got the songs from fredbears stuck in his head all the time, would hum them to himself pretty often

I have never played Stanley parable in my life but I am in LOVE with your narrator design

AHH thank you so much!! I’m glad he’s been received well!! Honestly, I spent so long worrying about and fussing over his design. Probably sounds preachy but I wanted to make sure he held the multiplicity/complexity of his character where he’s capable of being smug and smarmy as well as antagonistic, fussy, apathetic, vulnerable, pitiable, goofy, endearing, playful and even loveable. And fuckable , yes I’ll admit. (I actually ended up listening to the Narrator’s voice lines alone for HOURS to get the right feeling while drawing him.)

So yeah it was a bit tough to hit the visuals that matched that range of character for him. I love all kinds of different designs for the Narrator, especially the more abstract ones bc they’re so creative but I also like the human ones where he’s just some silly old man bc I think what makes the Narrator so appealing to everyone (besides Kevan Brighting’s EXCELLENT voice acting, which is a big part of it bc of how he delivers these lines) is how he’s written with so much character and personality. Despite definitely probably not being human, he comes off as SO incredibly human, almost to a fault. He feels like a person with flaws that we can relate to, especially as creative people who want to communicate and connect with others, rather than a typical AI or program in the game that’s just running as intended.

Anyway, I’m rambling but I’m so glad people love him and I really appreciate the comments I’ve gotten about how they think he also fits the voice. When you do that, I think that’s when you hit the jackpot. Especially as a character designer. You want everything about the character to sync up with who they are or what they’re written/described as.

There’s so much more I could go in depth about when it comes to what I took into consideration when designing my Narrator and what I think about him as a character, especially in my own AU, but it’s a LOT for another time. If you guys want to hear more tho, I’m open to ramble some more 👀 just ask me again.
