Shining Like the Sun | Lucien x Reader
Tumblr media
summary: Lucien walks in on you singing a familiar tune to your daughter.
word count: 1,200
warnings: fluff
a/n: This has been in my drafts for a hot minute and I decided to finally edit it. Here is another part of my ABBA x ACOTAR series (masterlist) where I dedicate a song to a character (: and a part two to this one-shot. It can also be read as a stand alone as this takes place many years after. I just wanted to take a lighter approach to this song since the first part was dark/angsty.
Tumblr media
As the sun ascends to its highest peak in the beautiful blue sky, its bathes the court in a warm glow. It’s been years since Lucien officially moved to Day Court, accepting his title as Helion’s heir. Yet, he still finds himself getting lost in the beauty of it all.
It was not easy for him to come to terms with the truth and he was grateful to have you by his side. The one constant in his life. The one who loved him even when he couldn’t find it in his heart to love himself.
A soft, melodious hum echoes through the courtyard like a gentle breeze. Lucien’s lips curve up into a smile and he allows the lovely sound to carry him forward. His eye softens immediately when he finally spots you.
You stand in front of the magnificent crystal fountain, humming a familiar tune to your daughter as you gently sway her back and forth in your arms. The fountain is your daughter’s favorite place. Her tiny eyes love to watch the way the crystals catch the sunlight, entranced by the resulting rainbows that dance across the courtyard. She loves it even more when you bring her close, her hands always reaching out for the moving water in a silent request to let her touch it.
But your daughter is not focused on the fountain at this moment.
Her attention is solely focused on you... much like her father’s.
“Tonight the super trouper beams are gonna blind me, but I won't feel blue."
Lucien pauses as you begin to sing, admiring the scene before him. Your voice possesses an enchanting allure that never fails to draw him in. And so he listens, entranced and enamored, knowing that he would follow you to the ends of the Prythian over and over again just to hear the sound of your voice.
“Like I always do,” you continue to sing, smiling when your daughter begins to scrunch her nose in delight. Lucien feels a tug in his chest–a sign that you’re well aware he’s watching. And then you’re finally lifting your head, meeting his gaze across the courtyard.
“‘Cause somewhere in the crowd there’s you.”
Sensing his warming presence, your daughter shifts in your arms. Her mouth parts as she spots her father, tiny hands reaching out for him. She is the spitting image of Lucien with her russet eyes and cascade of deep red hair that curls softly around her golden skin.
Lucien grins, finally bridging the distance between you. He graciously takes the infant into his arms, chest tightening when your daughter beams up at him. Her tiny hands grasp at his face, poking at his cheeks.
The way she looks up at him always makes his heart swell with such warmth. When she was first born, he worried his scars and mechanical eye would frighten her. But all he sees is pure awe and adoration reflected in those russet eyes.
Your eyes shine with mirth at the sight. “Someone missed you.”
Lucien playfully nips at your daughter’s fingers, eliciting the most adorable fit of giggles. So he does it one more time, chuckling with her, before turning to you. Your hair is swept to the side, leaving your back exposed and his gaze flickers toward the tattoo etched there.
What once used to be a trapped bird in a cage is now a bird soaring free, its wings spread wide in flight. A powerful symbol of your journey and a testament to Lucien's promise fulfilled—to liberate you from the bargain that bound you to that wretched place.
You had been freed to follow your heart, to explore the world, and to love without restraint. And you did, your heart choosing him, overwhelming him with a feeling he had thought he'd never be able to feel again. It appeared that the Cauldron had also finally favored him when the bond snapped, revealing you two to be mates.
His thumb sweeps over the black ink before letting it fall to the small of your back. He presses a kiss to your forehead and then walks you both to one of the day beds.
“Just someone?” He asks, russet eye sparkling as he already knows his answer. You had sent a couple of tugs through the bond while he sat through a meeting with Helion and other members of the Day council. It was something you both did, a means to check on each other.
“Maybe, I missed you too,” you reply coyly.
Lucien scoffs. “Maybe?”
You only laugh in response but the surge of love that floods through the bond says otherwise. The hand at your back lowers until he finds your own, his fingers intertwining with yours. Lucien settles himself onto the day bed, your daughter secured safely in his hold while he tugs you along. You hesitate, a slight furrow to your brow.
“Don’t you have another meeting to attend today?”
Lucien’s nose scrunches at the reminder—a charming trait your daughter has clearly inherited. He glances up at you with a playful smile, tugging gently at your hand once more. “Can’t you just let me enjoy the sweet company of my girls?”
Your daughter coos in agreement, prompting Lucien to raise his eyebrow at you.
“Besides, I have at least an hour until then,” he assures you, russet eye lighting up when he feels your hand relax in his. “Now, come.”
You let him pull you closer, curling up by his side as his familiar, comforting scent envelops you.
“That song you were singing,” Lucien begins as your daughter begins to crawl up his chest. She presses one tiny hand against him to lift herself while the other tangles in the loose strands of her father’s hair.
“I’ve always heard you humming it but I don’t think I’ve heard the words until now.”
“Really? It’s about when I first met you,” you say, lifting your chin to meet his warm and curious gaze. Blush rises to your cheeks. “I thought you knew. It's Sol’s favorite too.”
The two of you then look at the bundle of joy nestled between you both. Sol’s eyes crinkle, joyfully overwhelmed at the attention. “Sing it to me,” Lucien pleads gently, pulling the two of you closer to him.
And so you do.
Your voice floats softly through the air, wrapping around the three of you like a gentle embrace. Lucien closes his eyes, savoring the melody and the meaning. Beneath the warm embrace of the sun, with his two favorite girls by his side, all his worries melt away. Your daughter follows suit, nestling her head into her father’s chest, her eyes slowly giving in to sleep.
“Still, I'm thinking about you only,” you continue to sing, smiling softly to yourself. Your daughter nestles deeper into Lucien’s chest, her eyelids growing heavier. With a tender caress to her cheek, she finally succumbs to sleep. “There are moments when I think I’m going crazy.”
“But it’s gonna be alright. Everything will be so different when–”
A light snore disrupts your song, and you let out an amused chuckle. Even as Lucien drifts off to sleep, his feelings of happiness and love flood through the bond you share. Your own eyes close, basking in the warmth of it all.
Surely, a nap wouldn’t hurt.

ABBA x Acotar Masterlist
I found a dreamy cover of super trouper and listened to it a lot when writing this.
tagging those who read the first part and were interested in a part two: @acourtofimagines, @flymetovelaris, @zeprussia, @mybestfriendmademe, @hardcoremarvelfan
@tele86, @secretlyhers, @sarawritestories, @evergreenlark
I would love to eventually write a part that is set in between the first part and this one that focuses on how Lucien saved you but I'm still trying to find inspo for that. Like I'm unsure if I want him to find reader again UTM or for Lucien to invoke the Autumn duel or for him to get Rhys involved. For now, enjoy this fluff bc Lucien deserves all the happiness in the world <3

Sirius Black would absolutely have a love-hate relationship with ABBA — they are literally singing about his life:
Tumblr media
The album ABBA was released April 21, 1976, when Sirius was in his fourth year and he
1) finally kissed Remus:
So I made up my mind
It must come to an end
Look at me now, will I ever learn?
I don’t know how
But I suddenly lose control
There’s a fire within my soul
Just one look and I can hear a bell ring
One more look and I forget everything, whoa
Mamma mia, here I go again
My my, how can I resist you?
(Mamma Mia)
2) told Severus to go to the Whomping Willow during a full moon…
Where are those happy days
They seem so hard to find
I tried to reach for you, but you have closed your mind
Whatever happened to our love? I wish I understood
It used to be so nice, it used to be so good…
So, when you’re near me, darling, can’t you hear me
S.O.S.
The love you gave me, nothing else can save me, S.O.S.
[…]
You seem so far away though you are standing near
You made me feel alive, but something died I fear
(S.O.S.)
3) realised the he loved Remus and told him:
Love me or leave me, make your choice but believe me
I love you
I do, I do, I do, I do, I do
I can’t conceal it, don’t you see, can’t you feel it?
[…]
So come on, now let’s try it
I love you, can’t deny it
'Cause it's true
(I do, I do, I do, I do, I do)
Tumblr media
The album Arrival was released October 11, 1976, when Sirius was in his sixth year.
First of all, he’s the dancing queen:
Night is young and the music’s high
With a bit of rock music, everything is fine
(Dancing Queen)
Secondly, he’s run away from home and Regulus joined the Death Eaters:
I’ve seen it on your face
Tells me more than any worn-out old phrase
So now we’ll go separate ways
Never again we two
Never again, nothing I can do…
Like an image passing by
My love, my life
In the mirror of your eyes
My love, my life
I can see it all so clearly
Answer me sincerely
Was it a dream, a lie?
[…]
But I know I don’t possess you
So go away, God bless you
You are still my love and my life
Still my one and only
(My Love, My Life)
Tumblr media
The Album was released December 12, 1977.
About Sirius and Remus:
I was an impossible case
No one ever could reach me
[…]
I'm a bashful child beginning to grow
And you make me talk
And you make me feel
And you make me show
What I'm trying to conceal
If I trust in you
Would you let me down?
Would you laugh at me
If I said I care for you?
[…]
Your smile, and the sound of your voice
And the way you see through me
Got a feeling, you give me no choice
But it means a lot to me
(The Name of the Game)
Also I have no idea if there were karaoke-bars in England in 1977, but in my head the marauders go to a karaoke-bar and they encourage Lily to go up on stage and do a song, which she is reluctant to but then caves in and starts singing Thank You For The Music with the loveliest voice and most enticing eyes and James m e l t s
Tumblr media
Voulez-vous was released April 23, 1979, the year Regulus dies.
Remus to Sirius:
How I hate to see you like this
There is no way you can deny it
I can see that you're oh, so sad, so quiet
[…]
You were always sure of yourself
Now I see you’ve broken a feather
(Chiquitita)
Tumblr media
Super Trouper was released November 3, 1980.
About Sirius and Remus:
Touch my soul, you know how
Andante, andante
Go slowly with me now
I'm your music, I’m your song
Play me time and time again and make me strong
Make me sing, make me sound
Andante, andante
Tread lightly on my ground
Andante, andante
Oh, please don’t let me down
(Andante, Andante)
In the summer of 1981, Sirius got sick of the war and decided to take Remus with him for a weekend in Paris:
The summer air was soft and warm
The feeling right, the Paris night
Did its best to please us
And strolling down the Élysées
We had a drink in each café
And you, you talked of politics, philosophy and I smiled like Mona Lisa
We had our chance
It was a fine and true romance
[…]
I can still recall our last summer
I still see it all
Walks along the Seine, laughing in the rain
Our last summer
Memories that remain…
We made our way along the river
And we sat down in the grass
By the Eiffel tower
I was so happy we had met
[…]
We took the chance
Like we were dancing our last dance
I can still recall our last summer
I still see it all
In the tourist jam, round the Notre Dame
Our last summer
Walking hand in hand
Paris restaurants
Our last summer
Morning croissants
Living for the day
Worries far away…
(Our Last Summer)
They toasted to many more summers like those, but it really was their last…
Tumblr media
The Visitors was released November 30, 1981. A month earlier, Lily and James were murdered, Peter disappeared and Sirius was imprisoned.
Sirius in Azkaban:
One of us is crying, one of us is lying
In her lonely bed
Staring at the ceiling
Wishing she was somewhere else instead
One of us is shaking with a heart that’s breaking
One of us is lonely, one of us is only
Waiting for a call
Sorry for herself, feeling stupid, feeling small
Wishing she had never left at all
(One of Us)
Remus:
Do I really see what’s in her mind?
Each time I think I’m close to knowing
She keeps on growing
Slipping through my fingers all the time
Sleep in our eyes, her and me at the breakfast table
Barely awake, I let precious time go by
Then when she’s gone, there's that odd melancholy feeling
And a sense of guilt I can’t deny
What happened to the wonderful adventures
The places I had planned for us to go?
Slipping through my fingers all the time
Well, some of that we did, but most we didn’t
And why, I just don’t know
(Slipping Through My Fingers)
Bonus:
Knowing Me, Knowing You is Remus walking through Grimmauld Place after Sirius’s death:
No more carefree laughter
Silence ever after
Walking through an empty house
Tears in my eyes
Here is where the story ends, this is goodbye

ROTTMNT Headcanons: Just a random mix of stuff
All the kids have dimples
Mikey and Raph have them on both cheeks
Raph’s are pretty small and you can't see them unless he’s smiling wide
But Mikey’s are deep they show up a lot when he’s talking
Leo has a dimple on his right cheek
Donnie has one on his left
And both their dimples are pretty deep
Splinter used to push their cheeks together and poke their dimples
“My matching baby boys” is what he used to say whenever he did it
And April has two on one cheek (she used to get bullied for this)
Splinter didn't know why they had dimples because he never met a family member with them
His mom didn’t have them, and his Jiji didn’t have them
And he wasn't close with the rest of the family so it wasn't like he could call and ask
He thought it would be a mystery forever
Until Karai smiled for the first time
The kids love musicals
The Momma Mia movies are some of their favorites (they all agree the sequel is better)
It’s a tradition to watch them whenever something major happens
They watched them when they defeated Shredder, when April graduated High School, when she got her acceptance letter to her dream college, and when they defeated the Kraang (but Leo wasn’t lucid so he claims it doesn’t count)
(Donnie says that argument is bullshit cause he was lucid enough to sing along)
The twins will sing every single song
They have costumes, they have props, and they know all the dances by heart
They perform their little theater-loving hearts out (my siblings do this every time)
They all have a favorite song from both movies
April’s is ‘Dancing Queen’ (a little basic but a classic nonetheless(when she’s having a really good day she’ll sing along with the twins)), and ‘When I kissed The Teacher’ (cause watching Donnie and Leo run around makes her laugh)
Raph can't decide between ‘Our Last Summer’ and ‘Slipping Through My Fingers’, and his favorite sequel song is ‘My Love, My Life’ (he always tears up (his baby brothers singing those songs doesn’t help with the tears))
Leo’s is ‘Voulez-Vous’, and ‘Waterloo’ (he plays them both when he’s getting ready)
Donnie’s is ‘Money Money Money’ (for obvious reasons), and ‘Kisses Of Fire’ (cause Leo always sings in the accent)
Mikey’s is ‘Super Trouper’ (cause Donnie Leo and April sing it together), and ‘Why Did It Have To Be Me’ (cause that’s my favorite song)
The whole group dressed up as “Donna and The Dynamos” for Halloween (but no one could decide who got to be Donna so they were just “The Dynamos”)
I don't know if you know this but surgeons play music while they’re operating on patients
And all I can think about is Leo blasting his music whenever he’s operating on a family member
He either plays Lizzo or Selena there is no in-between
He always sings along and he forces his helpers (aka April and Splinter) to sing along
He has two reasons for doing this 1. He can’t think unless there is some sort of background noise and 2. It helps calm everyone down
He will kick people out if they complain about the music/refuse to sing
This is why Draxum is banned from the medbay

e. munson || ABBA
a/n: little blurb I wrote while listening to the mama mia soundtrack because tbh who doesn’t love abba? and since Eddie’s in my head 24/7 I decided to combine the two.
warnings: spoilers for stranger things season 4
Eddie doesn’t like ABBA.
they were just never really his type of music, preferring the sounds of an electric guitar absolutely being shredded and the loud beat of drums that make his head bang.
when you tell him that they were one of your absolute favorites, he gives you a smile as he pats your head. while they weren’t in his scope of music taste, he would never make fun of you for something that you liked—apart from the occasional teasing he’d give you, but he would never outright insult something that made your eyes crinkle with joy whenever you heard them in the radio.
but as soon as you dedicate the song ‘Super Trouper’ to him that one night you had decided to do karaoke with your other friends Steve, Nancy, and Robin, he thinks he may actually give them a chance.
the way you twirl around and dance to the song, gazing at him affectionate as you sing “but I won’t feel blue, like I always do, ‘cause somewhere in the crowd there’s you.” make his heart swell with pride that he can’t help but cheer for you.
he smiles as you hum ‘I Have A Dream’ under your breath as you help tidy up his absolute mess of a room, chuckling at your adorable habits.
as you sing along to ‘Take A Chance On Me’ he joins in, tapping his hands on his lap to the beat of the song, throwing in a few of the ‘take a chance, take a chance, take a take a chance chance’ here and there because he loved to see the grin on your face as he joined in on your antics.
he throws away any inhibitions or initial hesitations as you play a tape of ‘Andante, Andante’, sweeping you into his arms as he twirls you around, scooping you back into his arms as you waltz around the kitchen floor, giggling as his long curls tickle your neck.
you smile at him, eyes dazzling and stomach swarming with butterflies as he performs his own rock rendition of ‘Mamma Mia’, his eyes finding yours as you howl for him.
he thanks the heavens above him as you fall back into his arms, gasping as tears fall from your eyes, looking up at him as the song ‘Chiquitita’ played from the headphones placed on your ears, effectively creating an opening for you to save you from Vecna. he engulfs you in a tight hug. “Thank God, thank fucking God.” He sobs into your neck as he embraces you, vowing to himself that he’d kill that son of a bitch that even attempted to take you away from him.
he doesn’t like ABBA, but for you, he learns to love them.

People say Aziraphale and Crowley are Taylor Swift coded.
Babe wake up they are ABBA. Every song fit them.
Okay so I planned to put 3 or 5 songs but I fell down a deep hole of Abba/Good Omens so yeah have this.
Spoilers for the season 2, even tho not every song is about it
SOS? Every lyrics is them
Angel eyes? I mean come on the title only and it's nothing compared to the chorus
Lay all your love on me? Crowley is the one who told them to write that, he needed a song to express what it felt (re)meeting Aziraphale in the garden
Waterloo? Crowley is a drama queen, they sing this from the bottom of their lungs
The name of the game? Aziraphale. Oblivious lovely Aziraphale (and you make me talk, and you make me feel, and you make me show what I'm trying to conceal?? Yeah my boy wrote that one)
WINNER TAKES FUCKING IT ALL??? Don't talk to me
Knowing me knowing you is the long version of "Nothing lasts forever" and I'm not okay
One of us? You know the scene in mamma mia? Yeah it happened. One hundred percent. Two dramatic bitches crying about how they are the one who's abandonned
Take a chance on me? Both of them. Oblivious Aziraphale and flirty Crowley
Mamma Mia? Both of them. Every one or two century or decade (here I go again, how can I resist you Bla Bla Bla)
Dancing Queen? Is about Aziraphale. It is him
I've been waiting for you? Aziraphale for Crowley. (you thrill me, you delight me, you please me, you excite me, you're something inde been pleading for. I love you, I adore you. I LAY MY LIFE BEFORE YOU Aziraphale literally would declare his love with this exact words)
As good as new? I know this one isn't as known but for season 3 it's Aziraphale.
(I'll never know why I had to go
...
And know look at me standing here again cause I found out that my life is here
Gotta have you here.
As good as new my love for you)
Voulez vous ? About the fact that they keep meeting and fell in love and they do it all again everytime. Meaning all the good but also the misunderstanding?
I HAVE A DREAM?? Aziraphale. "You can take the future even if you fail? I believe in angels??"
If it wasn't for the nights? Change nights with when we see each other (which is basically what the nights are in the song) and it's just them screaming that they live for when they see each other and thank god they are busy otherwise they would turn so mad to not see each other more
Chiquitita? Crowley helping Aziraphale after a bad day. (I've seen you've broken a feather, Chiquitita you and I know how the heartaches come and they go and the scars they're leaving. Yeah Crowley sing to your boyfriend how hard days and works can be and how it pills up to hurt you)
Kisses of fire? No comment on this one. But yeah (not sexual pure emotion). (Touch my lips, close your eyes and see with your fingertips... Hmm yeah sure yep yep no hard feeling with this hand of Aziraphale begging to give in THIS scene)
Gimme gimme gimme? Rare exception here. Crowley is not the one tired of them turning around each other. It's Aziraphale who decide to put on a show.
Money money money? Sugar daddies
My love my life? Oh my heart is just shattered on the ground.
The mirror of your eyes: Crowley's glasses.
My love my life are the words I try to find: Aziraphale stuttering to find his word
But I know I don't possess you, so go away god bless you, you are still my love and my life. Bawling my eyes out, ripping my ribcage open
Super trouper? Just Aziraphale so happy to do his magic show. But only if Crowley is here to watch him. Otherwise why put on a show? No matter who is looking no eyes are dearer than their.
Our last summer? Funny funny. We took our chance like we were dancing our last dance, yeah no idea what chance or dance that could refer to in the last happy moments they gad together hmm?
Me and I is about the duality of feelings in Aziraphale, the fight between what he loves about heaven and what he loves about humanity and goodness + makes me think of him and Crowley being stringer together but we leave the meaning of the song (We're like the sun and rainy weather sometimes we are a hit together)
Elaine is Crowley singing about how Heaven know Aziraphale too well and they will tie him up so he does its will. I'm not kidding. (You curse, you try to scare, but you can never teach them, it's a dead end street, they tied your hands and tied your feet... You come, you stay, you go, it really doesn't matter, you've done it all before, by know they know the pattern)
I do, I do, I do? Crowley stop begging, I'm already crying. (Love me or leave me, make your choice but believe me I love you. I do, I do, I do...)
Hey hey Helen? Crowley is being petty. "So you're free at last and beginning to forget the past, does it make you sad when you think about the life you had?" (tbf I always felt uncomfortable about that song but it weirdly fits
Tropical loveland? To Crowley it's Alpha Centauri, to Aziraphale it's heaven. (Just take my hand, I'll show you everything. The secrets that my paradise can bring. I wanna share it with you)
I wonder? Aziraphale stop trying to convince yourself. DON'T GO
I'm a marionnette ? Okay I know you think it's about Aziraphale. But no. It's about Crowley. Because yes he has free will. At least more than Aziraphale. But up until this scene, he always did what Aziraphale wanted. Never refused him anything. (also this song gives me anxiety)
Honey honey? Well. I really like them as aroace. But I'll give it to you Aziraphale might have thought this.

You had worked your ass off to make the bar look as good as it did, and it had certainly paid off.
Because the bar was outside, you had made a great effort in making sure that the area was fully lit and decorated. There were lantern lights around the place, and you’d even had your boys make a makeshift dancefloor before they left. You’d also secretly had Leo make sure the stage was functional, just because it had been forever since you’d had live music.
Robin and Nancy also helped you decorate the bar area, even though you had told them that you didn’t need any help. Of course, since that conversation took place after your mental breakdown in your room about Steve, Eddie, and Jonathan, they didn’t want to leave you decorating alone. While you appreciated the help, you still wanted them to feel like guests.
That was part of the reason why you were surprised whenever they’d talked you into becoming the entertainment of the night.
“Ladies! Are there any here tonight?” Robin asked, speaking into her mic offstage.
The cheers of Lena’s bachelorette party attendants screamed in response.
“Well, for one night, and for one night only, the Pinestead Inn is proud to present the one, the only, the world’s first Girl Power band in all its grown-up wrinkly glory—”
“Speak for yourself, Rob,” Nancy muttered.
“One night! One number! ‘Cause that’s all we’ve got the breath for. Give it up for Y/N & the Dynamos!”
The girls in the audience screamed as you, Robin, and Nancy walked out in outrageous 70s outfits in honor of the selection that night. You were surprised that your outfits still fit all of you. While Nancy and Robin had hardly changed in terms of physique, you thought that having a baby twenty years ago would’ve made a difference for you.
As the curtains rose and the lights hit the three of you, you began to sing.
You, Nancy, and Robin had decided to pull out one of your strongest hits from back in the day: “Super Trouper.” It had always been one of your most popular hits, mostly because there probably wasn’t a person alive that disliked ABBA. While you three had many, many songs to choose from, especially if you pulled from your solo catalog, “Super Trouper” was without a doubt the best pick.
Now that you were singing again, you thought that it was odd that Steve wasn’t out in the crowd. The last time you had been that happy singing was whenever you could sing specifically to him, acting as if every other person wasn’t there. You remembered that part of your life almost like it had happened yesterday.
Back in those days, Steve would watch your set the entire night, then he would take you home, wine and dine you before he took you to bed. He would tell you how pretty you were up there, singing for him like he was the only man in the room. He would touch you like he would never touch a woman again, touch you again. Steve would love you like it was the last time he’d ever get the opportunity to do such a thing and he wanted you to know that no matter what, that love would never go away.
Even after everything he’d done to you, you really did miss him. Something about him was so simply irresistible, even all these years later. You hated to admit that he still had a place in your heart. Just seeing him earlier that day made your heart hurt, just as it had whenever you’d sent him away all those years ago.
Whenever you’d seen Steve standing at the very opposite end of the bar, out of the line of sight with Jonathan and Eddie, your heart nearly skipped a beat.
While Steve knew that it was a bachelorette party for your daughter that he was technically crashing, he couldn’t help but eavesdrop whenever he heard you were going to be singing that night. Being back on the island made him think back to the summer of 1990, the best summer of his life. Even after all those years, he still couldn’t get your voice out of his head, nor could he forget the smell of your perfume or the feel of your body under his. You had never been able to leave him, even after his marriage with Amy.
Steve had married the girl back home that he’d said he would whenever he left you on Pinestead Island. If he could do it all over again, he wouldn’t have married her, no matter what happened with you. That decision was something he regretted even after all this time. He should’ve thought about a way to get you back rather than just settle and marry Amy.
He’d been stupid to waste his life the way he had. While he had money, more money than he could ever want, he wasn’t happy. Not really.
Unsurprisingly, Amy had served him with divorce papers almost ten years ago now, telling him that now that the boys were old enough for them to co-parent from separate homes, it was time for their relationship to end. In Steve’s eyes, their relationship had ended the day that he met you.
His sons were sixteen and eighteen now, but at the time, they had been much too young to understand why their parents didn’t love each other anymore. Steve had always told them that he would them what he’d done to their mother whenever they got older. Whenever they turned thirteen and fifteen, respectively, Steve told his sons about you and about that summer (of course, the less explicit version). He’d also told them that if they ever cheated on their partners the way that he’d done that he would disown them, but they promised that they wouldn’t.
Even so, Steve didn’t regret all of what he’d done. While he regretted not going home after he’d met you to tell Amy that it was over, he didn’t regret a single thing he did with you. That single month with you had been the most right his life had ever been, and he would do anything to have one night with you again.
That was the real reason why Steve had accepted what he’d thought was your invitation back to the island.
Steve had thought about coming back to Pinestead to see you for years. He’d dreamed of seeing you again since the moment he’d left the island to get married. He had your website for the villa tabbed on his computer back home, checking on it every once in a while to make sure that the place didn’t close before he got to see it in person. He had never gone to see you because part of him was scared that you would throw him back off the island the second you saw him. He didn’t want to risk seeing you so angry and upset with him again—he couldn’t take it. His heart broke at the thought of making you feel like that ever again.
Because of that, he knew that he loved you. He still loved you, really. He knew that he’d said it to you in passing maybe once or twice whenever you’d been sleeping together, but if he ever got to say it to you now, he would make sure you knew he meant it because, even now, he still felt that way about you. You were still beautiful, even after all these years. You were bold, sharp even if he had still been, deservedly, at the other end of that anger you had. You had even built the villa you two had designed that summer, making your and his dreams a reality.
Steve knew, however, knew that he would never get so lucky to have you again and that he would have to live with the decision he’d made to leave you behind all those years ago for the rest of his life. For that, he would always live in regret.
Whenever the song was done, you, as well as Nancy and Robin, had immediately walked over to the three men across the bar. While you talked, music blared through the area, leaving the young girls to fill the dance floor.
“What are you doing here?” you asked them, somewhat irritated.
“This is a bachelorette party,” Nancy said.
“Meaning no boys allowed,” Robin added, making sure that she was really selling the point home.
“Well, you know, we thought that we would wander around the property, enjoy the hotel as guests, you know?” Steve said, trying to act calm. Internally, however, his heart was beating rapidly. He thought you were going to tear him to shreds.
“Hm. Too bad this area’s being rented out for a private party. Emphasis on private.”
“Yeah, well—”
“They can stay if they want to!” Lena shouted, smiling as she danced with Sarah and Jenny.
Steve shrugged, giving a tightlipped smile. “I don’t know if you know, but, uh… we have permission from the bride.”
He, as well as Jonathan and Eddie, disappeared into the crowd as you rolled your eyes.
It was almost like he hadn’t aged. Even though he was forty-something years old, he still blended in with these young twenty-something young girls. There was something youthful about him, something so spontaneously interesting and simultaneously fun that it started to make your heart melt for him.
“You okay?” Robin asked, putting a hand on your shoulder.
“Me?” you responded. “Yeah. Yeah, I’m okay.”
Without asking you, Nancy walked up to the bar, not even looking at the drink menu. “Three shots, please. Vodka.”
“Oh my God, Nance, are you trying to kill us?”
“No. No, this is good,” you said. “I need to start drinking, like, right now.”
All of this was too much for you. Why had Lena told them it was okay to stay? Your daughter couldn’t have known what she had just done. With Lena, Steve, Eddie, and Jonathan all in the same place, it wouldn’t be long until they realized that your daughter very well could have been one of theirs, too, and you wanted to be far from sober if you could to handle that conversation.
Once you and Robin had gotten so drunk that you were hardly able to stand, Nancy decided to bring you two up to your room for the night.
Of course, the bachelorette party still went on without you and the Dynamos.
After you had been forced to go to bed, Lena had decided it was as good a time as any to finally try to investigate who her father truly was. Her current plan was to talk to each of them individually to see if she could figure out the father that way.
The first person she could find was Steve.
Whenever Lena dragged Steve to the edge of the bar, which was away from most of the party, he didn’t mind. He knew he had to go with her, even if it was just to talk.
Lena truly did look just like you. She was such a beautiful girl, just like her mother. He couldn’t help but to love your daughter too.
“I’m sorry to drag you away from the party,” she said somewhat sheepishly.
“No, I’m glad you did,” Steve replied. “It’s, uh… It’s crazy seeing the island the way that it is now. It used to be so quiet, you know? Now it’s so different.”
Lena nodded. “So do you regret staying away for so long, then?”
“No,” Steve said. “I regret that I didn’t know what was here.”
“What?”
“This place. The Inn,” he replied. “Your mom and I talked about building this place here a long time ago, but, uh… you know, she obviously beat me to it.”
She hesitated to respond to him. “Tell me something about my mom.”
“Your mom?”
Steve didn’t know what to say to her. What could he tell this girl about her own mother that she didn’t already know? He had only spent a month with you twenty-one years ago, but this girl had her whole life with you. There probably wasn’t a thing she didn’t know about you after all the time that your daughter had spent with you.
“Okay, I think I got something. I was, uh… I was actually the one that brought her here.”
“And that wasn’t the only thing you did, was it?”
Steve’s eyebrows furrowed together in confusion. “What’d she tell you?”
“Nothing!” Lena answered quickly. “She–She’s never mentioned you before.”
Something about that answer didn’t sit right with him. “No, no, no. You told me earlier that your mom never stops talking about her friends from the old days, okay? Something’s not adding up.” He paused whenever he saw the look of worry on her face. “What’s going on, Lena? Why am I here/”
Instead of answering him, however, Lena reentered the dance floor.
“Wait, Lena!” Steve shouted, trying to follow her. Of course, he was pulled right back into dancing with the young girls at the party.
The next person Lena spotted was Eddie. She pulled him to the very edge of the dance party, talking to him as she’d just talked to Steve.
“It’s crazy that Y/N has a grown-up daughter,” he said.
“Have you got any children, Eddie?” Lena asked.
“No, I’ve chosen to not put myself into the path of paternity.”
“It’s never too late.”
“Oh, I don’t think my other half would agree,” Eddie said, almost laughing.
“Do you not want children?” Lena asked, somewhat worried.
“Nah, it’s not that. We’re just old. Too old for a baby, anyway. Besides, it would’ve been hard to have kids on the road,” he said. “You know, I would’ve loved to have a daughter.”
With that, Lena’s heart skipped a beat. “Really?”
“I don’t know, something about it. I would’ve spoiled that little girl completely rotten if I got the chance.”
“Must be your lucky day…,” Lena mumbled.
“Is your dad here?” Eddie asked. “I wanna meet the guy that made your mom settle down.”
“I don’t know.”
“What?”
“I don’t know who my dad is,” Lena said, now speaking much more clearly.
Before Eddie could ask any more questions, he was brought right back into the dance circle. When Lena tried to find him, she was instead pulled to the side by Jonathan.
“Can I ask you a question?” Jonathan asked. “It may sound like I’m being nosey, but I’m trying to figure out how all of this is possible.”
“Go ahead.”
“How did your mother get this place? When I knew her, she was singing in a bar on the mainland.”
Lena shrugged. “I was really little when it happened. She was left some money in a will, I think. I know we lived with an older lady when I was younger. Her name was Darlene.”
“Darlene? Like my great aunt Darlene?” Jonathan asked.
“I think it must be.”
“I always heard her money went to family,” he said, trailing off. That was when he realized something. “Wait a minute. How old are you?”
“I’m twenty.”
With that, Jonathan went to go stand on the edge of the balcony, almost as if he was going to be sick.
“Jonathan!” Lena shouted, running after him.
“Sorry. I had to get some air,” he said, leaning on the edge of the railing.
“Why did your great aunt leave my mother that money?” she asked.
“I don’t know.”
“You do. Please, just tell me.”
Jonathan hesitated, turning to look at your daughter for only a moment. “Well, what did your mother tell you?”
“She won’t talk about the past. She doesn’t understand how much I need to know.”
“Well, you’ll have to talk to her about it.”
“This doesn’t have anything to do with her,” Lena finally said. “My whole life has been one big unanswered question, and I don’t want any more secrecy.”
“Lena, this isn’t my secret.”
She finally sighed. There wasn’t any point in sugarcoating it anymore. “Jonathan, are you my father?”
He hesitated. “I think I might be.”
“Well, you know what comes next.”
“Don’t tell me you have a win,” Jonathan said, his face going pale.
“No, no. It’s just me,” Lena said, trying to alleviate his worry. “No, I wanted to ask if you would give me away tomorrow?”
“Give you away?” he asked, not seeming to understand.
“I’ll feel like a real bride if I can walk down the aisle with my father.”
Before Jonathan could give her an answer, Jenny turned to tell Sophie something before quickly walking away, rejoining the dance circle. “The boys are back!”
“I’ll find your mother,” Jonathan said. “I need to talk to her about this.”
“No!” Lena replied. “Not tonight. We’ll keep this our secret until the wedding tomorrow, okay?”
“She’s gonna lose her mind, Lena.”
“She’ll be relieved. She’ll see us together and see that I’m happy.”
Jonathan pondered over the thought. “Oh, all right. I’ll do it.”
As he walked back into the crowd, Eddie came up to Lena again.
“Lena, I won’t beat around the bush, kid. I know why I’m here,” he said. “And let me tell you, I think it’s great. I’ve always wanted a little girl, and a big one’s even better.”
“No, Eddie! It’s—”
“I know I’m rushing things, but please tell me, does your mother know that I know?”
“No, she—”
“Okay, that’s good. Listen, I gotta know, who’s giving you away?”
“No one!” Lena said quickly.
“Wrong! I am!” he said, almost too excitedly.
“You?”
“Yes!”
“Oh!”
“And don’t worry about your mom. She doesn’t scare me too much!” Eddie shouted, getting sucked right back into the crowd.
“Wait, Eddie!”
Before Lena could catch him, however, Steve pulled her to the side once again.
“Oh my God! Talk about slow on the uptake. I’m your dad!”
“Steve!” Lena said, almost begging him to forget his realization.
“I get it now, okay? That’s why you sent me an invitation. You want your ol’ dad here to walk you down the aisle. I’m not gonna let you down, okay? I’ll be there!”
Before she could catch him, as well as Jonathan and Eddie, Lena could only stand in the middle of the crowd and the loud music, regretting her decision to try and find her father in the first place.

Band codes for the poets
I’m just stuck on thoughts about how a lot of the poets, if not all of them, are band coded.
Neil: Neil is most definitely Taylor Swift. More so a lot of her Folklore/Evermore stuff is so inherently Neil and both Taylor/Neil talk a lot about the pain life brings but the love that it brings in reward.
Todd: Todd is hard because he in actual fact doesn’t come into his own until the end of the movie but most Fanon Todd ideas centre around his love for reading and writing. This might not resonate with everyone but I feel he’s Kate Bush. Whimsical, and taking inspiration from literature, but also so in tune with life ad how to create art, not just a song.
Charlie: I couldn't decide on just one. Charlie in the good old tunes is Queen. It’s that rock and roll lifestyle but teamed with friendship and unfortunate loneliness for a romantic. But Charlie also fits in with a lot of modern music, because he doesn’t fit his own time period. He’s so Matty Healy coded it’s untrue. Could you imagine Charlie at a The 1975 concert? He’d be fucking living. I had this dream where Charlie and the Poets go to the concert and, somehow, Charlie ends up on stage, singing with Matty on The Sound, and serenading Knox, and they end up kissing during Robbers, which forces Knox to go on stage and snog Charlie because he's jealous.
Knox (Fanon because Canon doesn’t exist in my head for him): The Beatles. Imagine early 60s Paul McCartney. He wants to be in a happy classy love story, and very upbeat, but also he’d appreciate all the pining heartbreak songs.
Meeks: ABBA. If Meeks wasn’t American, he’d definitely be Swedish and I just can’t explain it. Maybe it’s the friendship with Charlie but he’s the other side of the 70s music coin to Charlie. It’s the happiness of songs like Dancing Queen and Super Trouper. I could imagine him having a breakdown to Slipping Through My Fingers.
Pitts: Pitts would be Jersey Boys. He’s smooth and he'd break out those sweet dance moves while still remaining calm and collective. I LOVE IT.
Cameron: Silence. Not because I don’t think he matches with any band, he just strikes me as the Poet that will listen to everyone else’s music taste and think it’s all just ok. He hasn’t got strong opinions on that and doesn’t care about whether music is on or not, he could live quite easily without music. That’s ok! Music isn't for everyone and Cameron lives his life with only a couple of things that makes him stand out.

Kcjgkhdf Yesss I really like the ABBA one too!! I love the image of Reader singing and dancing to Waterloo with Floyd or Super Trouper with Jade (,,or Dancing Queen with Azul— And I can’t help but imagine them in those 60s/70s outfits ABBA wore either-)
OO BUT!! There’s actually one thing I forgot to put down on that list of TWST images/imagines! (And I’m kinda glad I did because,, it spiralled out of control very quickly and became a whole mini essay-)
Okay, this is supposed to be more of a comedic concept, but hear me out,,, Matchmaker!Reader, who (as the title suggests) sets people up in romantic relationships. They have good intuition on who would make a good couple, and whenever Matchmaker!Reader sets two people up for a match, they always get together, so they’re really good and successful at what they do. When they got transported to Twisted Wonderland, quite literally, a whole new world of opportunities for matchmaking opened up for them. When it comes to matchmaking, Matchmaker!Reader here is either sought out for their services, or (and this is a rare case) they try to match people up purely because they think the people they’re matching would make a great couple, and it would be a shame if they didn’t seize the opportunity to get them together. Once they’ve got a match in mind, they’re VERY determined and persistent on seeing it through.
Matchmaker!Reader: When a person says that they’re looking for someone who has a “good sense of humour,” what they really mean is that they’re looking for someone with their sense of humour. Well, a vast majority of them, anyway.
But anyway, days pass, and Matchmaker!Reader develops a crush on Azul,, except, they’re trying to set him up with someone else! (This concept could be applied to other characters too! It’s just that Azul came to mind first,,) Here’s the thing, they are CONVINCED Azul likes this other person, so they push their feelings aside and try their best to make this match happen. I was thinking that ‘someone else’ Matchmaker!Reader thinks Azul likes could be from one of the popular ships Azul is in, like Jamil,,
Jamil: I hate my life
Azul: well, did you knOW YOU CAN SAVE-
Matchmaker!Reader: (Yeah, I could make this work.)
Azul also does feel the same way for Matchmaker!Reader, so he’s really confused when Matchmaker!Reader is trying to set him up with someone else?? But yeah, shenanigans happen, and Azul eventually decides to confess his feelings to Matchmaker!Reader. When he does, they’re super shocked to find out that they were wrong, and for the first time, the match they envisioned didn’t work out at all… They’re so caught up in the fact that they were wrong it takes a moment before Azul’s words actually process. He LIKES them? Wait, when did that happen??
Azul: *insert confession here*
Matchmaker!Reader: Huh? Azul, what are you saying? You like me? I thought you liked Jamil! Are you telling me that my matchmaking instincts were wrong? I’ve never been wrong in a match before… This is the first time I’ve ever been incorrect. How? Where did I go wrong?
Matchmaker!Reader: *realisation finally hits* Wait, you like me?? Since when???
I just think it’d be kind of interesting,,, Azul, a businessman who deals with transactions that aren’t supposed to be swayed by emotions or feelings, in contrast to Matchmaker!Reader, who deals with emotions like they are a business
Oh, and one more thing I didn’t manage to fit in- If Azul was dropping hints that he likes Matchmaker!Reader beforehand, they like,, pick them up but at the same time they don’t?? It’s not that they’re dense, far from it! It’s just that they’re so invested in their job that they literally can’t pick up romantic hints aimed at them and not when they’re for others. Idk if that makes sense but like,,,
(Oo, and I’m also trying to put a small something together for Ikevamp Beethoven as well,,, 👀)
Jackdaw Anon 🐦
THAT REMINDS ME OF SOMETHING I WROTE A WHILE BACK :C GAHH MATCHMAKER TROPES ARE SO FUN!!! :D TAHST SUCH A GOOD IDEA I WAS GIGGLINGA DN KICKING MY FEET WHEN I READ IT WHEHAWJDHAGHSFDAHJSD
"They’re so caught up in the fact that they were wrong it takes a moment before Azul’s words actually process. He LIKES them? Wait, when did that happen??"
HJASJFDJHAFSDFASHG THSI APRT RIGHT HERE I LOVE THIS I LOVE THIS!!!!
AND YOUR COMMENT ABOUT THE CONTRAST???? YOURE SO REAL FOR THAT. IT WOULD BE STUNNING. TWO BUSINES PEOPLE DEALING WITH TWO VERY DIFFERENT THINGS OGMGOGMGOMOMGOMGMOGMOGMOG
(hehehehhee i will be anticipating that so hard >:3 have fun on yoru trip!!!!!!!)

Mamma Mia 3 Plot Idea
Since we know that it's gonna contain some of the songs from Voyage, here's my take:
Sophie is not satisfied with her life. She has a husband Sky and a kid named Dan (In MM2 it's Donny, but we can assume Dan is his nickname). She regrets not singing and having a career, which she used to do as a child [Thank you for the music]. Now her family's life is suffocating her so she decides to return to singing, but wonders if she still has it in her [I Still Have Faith in You]
Singing career takes of and she starts performing [Eagle] [Get on the Carousel] [Summer Night City]
There's also a manager who's manipulating her or stealing money or something. [I'm a Marionette]
Meanwhile, Sky dislikes that her career is taking off and wonders about their relationship [Why Did It Have to Be Me?] [One of Us reprise] and they argue all the time [Don't Shut Me Down]
They decide to get a divorce while the montage of them meeting is shown [The day before you came]
At first, Sophie is happy that she got rid of her unsupportive husband [So long], but their son Dan doesn't like that they're separated. [Keep an Eye on Dan]
Sophie starts thinking about her relationship with Sky [When you danced with me - "Was it worth it, severing the ties"] and considers getting back together with him. [I Can be your Woman]
And, of course, at the end of the movie, she sees him in a crown while singing in a club [Super Trouper].
And they reconcile. [Mamma Mia]
Harry, Sam, Bill, Tanya and Rosie are also here somewhere, but I focused on the main plot.

what if she-ra was actually mamma mia
I heard mamma mia in a she-ra playlist and made a stupid comment about it to a friend and now here we are...
I present to you: mamma shera - the musical
Chiquitita
Of course Scorpia sings it to Catra. She's most likely frustrated after losing another fight to the princesses. She hides in a corner somewhere in the Fright Zone but of course Scopria find her anyway. The song starts out by them sitting next to each other but eventually Scorpia stand up and starts performing. She tries to get Catra to join the dance but she's very stiff.
SOS
Adora sings this to Catra after being captured by her. She is tied up on the floor at first when the song starts. Catra is at the other end of the room, not interested at first. As the chorus hits, Adora frees herself and starts dancing. She emotionally strides across the room as the song progresses, mostly moving around Catra in circles. She watches thoughtfully. She joins during the last when you're gone, how can I even try to go on?
I Have A Dream
Hordak sings this longingly when building the protal. No I will not elaborate, you know I'm right.
Does Your Mother Know
Emily sings it to Entrapta. You only hear robotic beeping in the rhythm of the song with subtitles of the lyrics. Maybe you can hear Scorpia whispering the actual lyrics in the background , I'm not sure about that one.
Slipping Through My Fingers
Angella sings it with Glimmer. It's very emotional, everyone cries (including me).
Voulez-Vous
Lonnie, Kyle and Rogelio. It's a whole sequence that starts during a mission where it's only them. As the song progresses, you see the trio back in the Fright Zone. Now Catra, Hordak, Scorpia, Entrapta and everyone else from the Fright Zone join the performance bit by bit. They do the background choreography and vocals.
or maybe imp sings it idk
Dancing Queen
Sea Hawk. The song starts during a heated battle. But suddenly all the lights go out. There is one single beam of light. It then cuts to DT, they're the one shining the light on Sea Hawk. You see Mermista shaking her head as Sea Hawk starts going ham on the battle field which has now transformed into a dancefloor. The song ends because she splashes him with water.
Our Last Summer
Hordak is back on Horde Prime's ship. He should be happy about, you see him slowly walking down the corridors. He then stops, you can hear the first few notes of the song. He puts his hand on the glass of a big window and as he stares at the stars he starts singing. You see Entrapta roaming around Darla, she seems happy. But her facade stars to crumble. Eventually, she stops and takes the same pose as Hordak. As she joins the song, both of them appear on screen you know, this ugly splitscreen where there's one character on each side.
Take A Chance On Me
Scorpia and Catra again. The performance follows them through their day. Scorpia takes every chance to try and convince Catra of her qualities. She pokes over Catra's shoulder when she's planning, sits next to her in the cafeteria, follows her even into Hordak's lab. Catra ignores her the whole time. Entrapta and Emily do the background vocals Emily tries her best but it's just beeping again.
Gimme! Gimme! Gimme!
Double Trouble. Even though it is meant to be only a side performance they outshine everyone. Sea Hawk does the lighting.
Super Trouper
Glimmer sings about Bow. You see her in Bright Moon fulfilling her duties as queen during the day. At night, Bow joins her and they dance. Adora does the background vocals.
Money, Money, Money
Kyle is just fed up with everyone in the Fright Zone. The sequence begins with him, Lonnie and Rogelio coming back from a mission. They make fun of him again as he suddenly bursts into song. The other two do the background vocals but the focus lies only on Kyle because he deserves it.
Waterloo
Adora and Catra are in a heated one on one battle. Suddenly they get very close. They intensely stare into each other's eyes. Then, the song starts and suddenly the continue fighting, every move is on beat. Both, the other princesses and Horde soldiers stand in the background looking very confused.
Why Did It Have to Be Me
Hordak and Entrapta. He wonders why the hell she ended up staying with him. It's a funky performance and the rest of the Horde members just watch with very confused looks on their faces.
Lay All Your Love On Me
I couldn't really decide on two specific characters so this is a duet between all of the couples. There are a lot of cuts jumping from one couple to the next.
Knowing Me, Knowing You
This is definitely Catra. The song follows her through her daily life in The Fright Zone as she thinks about her relationship with Adora. You sometimes see her being with the other princesses while you hear Catra singing.
Mamma Mia
This song belongs to Mermista. You see her alone in Salineas. She's thinking about Sea Hawk when she starts singing. It starts slowly but then the scene jumps to her on a ship together with Sea Hawk and the rest of the crew. She shines, this is her song and she knows it. The others do the background vocals.
The Winner Takes It All
This is the final song. It takes place during the endfight between the Horde and the Rebellion. Everyone sings but the focus is mainly on Catra and Adora.
thank you to @lcnelywclf who contributed some of these
feel free to add your own ideas. and if you're an artist i'm offering you my firstborn to draw this.

Somewhere in the Crowd There's You | Rosnali
Summary: Denali and Rosé were best friends all through middle and high school, but had to part ways after graduating in 1998. But even years later, the one thing that always connected them were the mixtapes Rosé would make. Ship: Rosnali Word Count: 2174 Rating: T
ao3 | ko-fi
Bonus: Denali's Playlist for Rosé
-
“Denali, so help me god if you’re late to graduation you will not make it to college!” her mother shouted up the stairs.
Denali groaned and rolled her eyes. “I’m coming!” she yelled back down to her. She pressed ‘stop’ on her CD player and popped the cover open, taking the disk out and putting it into its correct sleeve in her CD book. It was a smaller one, as it only contained her most precious ones - the mixtapes Rosé had given her over the years.
The two of them had been best friends since they had both transferred to the same Manhattan school in sixth grade, Denali coming from Alaska and Rosé from Scotland. Both of them had felt out of place and immediately sought refuge in each other and had been inseparable ever since. And one thing that had always been consistent in their friendship was Rosé’s love of burning CDs and giving them to her, whether it was for a special occasion or just because she thought Denali would like it, and she always did.
“And don’t even think about trying to take your walkman!”
She huffed, looking at it waiting for her on her bed. “Fine,” she threw her gown over her dress and grabbed her cap before hustling out the door.
Any attitude she might have had disappeared the second she got out of the car and saw Rosé. she sprinted towards the taller girl, launching herself into her arms. “Rosie!”
Rosé scooped Denali up without hesitation, one arm wrapped around her waist and the opposite hand holding her thigh. “Hi Dee,” she cooed, spinning around with her before eventually setting her back down. “I got something for you.”
Denali giggled as Rosé reached up under her gown because of course, she would manage to get away with wearing pants at graduation. She beamed from ear to ear as Rosé placed a CD in her hand. Written in pink glitter gel pen over masking tape was ‘Denali + Rosé: Class of ‘98’, with a heart over the ‘i’. She looked at the tracklist and smiled when she saw one was highlighted - that meant Rosé had recorded herself singing, and that was her favorite part. “Super Trouper?” she tilted her head, noting it was the only song on the list that hadn’t come out during their time in high school.
She shrugged, a tinge of pink ghosting her cheeks. “I like ABBA and the song made me think of you.”
“I love it,” she quickly assured, hugging her tightly before sliding the mixtape into her macrame crossbody bag. “Come on, we better go take our seats so we can say goodbye to our childhood.”
Rosé arched her brow. “Bit grim when you put it that way, but let’s go.”
After graduation Rosé and Denali went to dinner together with their families, then back to Denali’s house for a sleepover, likely one of the last ones they would have before college. But they didn’t want to think about that, instead focusing on enjoying the time they had together.
It wasn’t easy for either of them, and Denali was left with a difficult decision. When she was twelve, she acknowledged the fact that she was attracted to girls, but decided it was best to not do anything about it. At sixteen, she realized that it wasn’t just girls in general, that would be too easy to ignore. For the past two years, she had accepted the fact that she was in love with Rosé, but too paralyzed with fear to do anything about it.
So, she made a mixtape. Each song one declaration of love after another. And it had been sitting in her closet for a week now while she tried to talk herself into giving it to her best friend. She knew it was now or never, tonight had to be the night.
“Something on your mind?” Rosé gently prompted.
Denali hesitated, then shook her head. “I’m just gonna miss you,” she told her, sitting next to her cross-legged on the bed. “We’re gonna stay in touch, right?”
“Of course,” Rosé assured. “We can call each other and talk on AIM when we can get to the campus libraries,” she suggested, resting her hand on Denali’s thigh and squeezing gently. “I think we can make it work.”
She chewed on her lip and nodded. “If you think so, then I do too.” She glanced back at her closet, thinking, her heart racing. Rosé cared enough about her to want to make their friendship work. Maybe there was a chance…
“Hey,” Rosé prompted to change the subject, “I rented Cinderella with Brandi from Blockbuster, you wanna watch?”
Denali nodded, letting her fear quell her desire to give her the disk. “Yeah, I’ll go make some popcorn.”
Six Years Later
Manhattan felt almost as foreign to Denali as it did when she first moved there. Despite the nostalgia that filled her when she walked past Broadway, recalling seeing RENT there with Rosé for her eighteenth birthday, or the other little things that brought her back to her teenage years, she felt odd, out of place. It made her stomach churn with the way everything seemed to change.
It didn’t help that, despite all of the promises they had made to each other, she had lost touch with Rosé sometime after the start of her sophomore year. Their lives had gotten so busy, so involved, it just dissipated and she had to try her best to move on.
And most days Denali was able to go about her life as normal. She returned to her apartment with lunch for herself and her roommate. Her new normal. “Liv! Come eat!”
Olivia promptly emerged from her room, a piece of paper in her hand. “Check out this flyer I snagged from the café a few blocks over. They’re having a karaoke night tonight, we should go,” at Denali’s hesitation, she jutted out her bottom lip and batted her lashes. “C’mon, please? They’re gonna have alcohol.”
With a jokingly dramatic sigh, she acquiesced. “Okay, fine, but don’t even think about trying to drag me on stage before I’ve had at least three drinks.”
After lunch, the two of them got ready for the night, doing their hair and makeup and picking out just the right outfits for the modern y2k-era nightlife. The walk to the café was about ten minutes and they were able to get a table before the room started to fill up. Her attention faded in and out as people started to perform, nursing her drink and picking at the chips on the table.
“Alright, who’s next?” the event host prompted, scanning the room. “You, in the pink, right this way!” There were some scattered cheers as a woman took the stage, but Denali didn’t look up until she started singing.
Olivia noticed the sudden alertness in her friend. “What, you’re an ABBA fan?”
“No, no I know that voice,” she insisted, shushing her to focus on the stage better. There was no way, it couldn’t be…
“But I won’t feel blue like I always do. ‘Cause somewhere in the crowd there’s-” Rosé looked into the audience, her eyes meeting Denali’s and her breath hitching in her throat, nearly missing the last word, but when she got it out, it was as if she were singing to her once again, “...you.”
Before Denali could decide what to do, Rosé was making a beeline for her, then she was standing right in front of her, looking more beautiful than Denali could’ve ever anticipated. “Rosie?” she asked softly, afraid it was too good to be true.
A broad smile stretched across Rosé’s face as if she were wondering the same thing until that moment. “Denali!” She yanked the smaller woman to her feet and pulled her into a tight embrace, one that neither of them ever wanted to end. “When did you move back to New York?”
“Couple weeks ago officially. My parents moved out to Long Island, so I was staying with them while I was trying to find a place. That’s how I met Olivia, my roommate,” Denali explained, gesturing to the girl still sitting at the table.
Olivia offered a polite wave and smile in response. “It seems like you guys have some catching up to do, I’m gonna go on stage next then, um, keep myself busy,” she decided and scurried off.
“Let’s go outside,” Rosé suggested, the two of them leaving the café and sitting on a bench in front of it. “I’ve missed you so much. What have you been up to?”
Denali shrugged. “Got my BFA in dance, worked with a few different companies either performing or choreographic. And last year I was in Zumanity, which was quite the experience,” she blushed a bit as she recalled that, unsure if Rosé was familiar with the type of show it was, “and now I’m here as a full-time dance teacher and choreographer. What about you?”
Rosé’s eyes did widen at the name, feeling her face start to redden as her mind started to wander, wondering what sort of things Denali had performed on stage. While she hadn’t seen the show, she had seen commercials when watching TV late at night. She’d nearly missed her question, clearing her throat and centering herself. “Oh, well, my life hasn’t been as interesting as yours, I got my BFA in musical theatre, did various off-Broadway gigs, and… you’re going to laugh… I’m the understudy for the lead role in Mamma Mia here on Broadway.”
“Mamma Mia… the ABBA jukebox musical?” She covered her mouth as she tried not to laugh, a bit of giggling slipping through. “A little on the nose, isn’t it Rosie? But I’m very happy for you.”
“Maybe so, but I’m much more interested in this Zumanity stint. I mean, I always knew you had that skill level but that’s a… unique setting,” Rosé retorted, her interest, and perhaps something more, very piqued.
Denali looked down and grinned. “It was. Everyone there was incredibly talented too, it was so freeing, so queer,” she said, then hesitantly looked back up to reaffirm, “which I also am, you know, gay.”
Rosé chuckled softly and nodded. “I kind of suspected as much, just with the way you reacted when we saw RENT,” she recalled, then quickly followed up with, “I am too.”
An eight-year-long weight lifted from Denali’s chest at the confession. “Do you wanna come back to my place? It’s just a couple of blocks over, we can have a sleepover like we used to,” she suggested.
“I’d love that,” she grinned, and as they walked back to the apartment, she had her arm slung around Denali’s shoulders, not passing up the first opportunity in years to keep her close. Even though it was an apartment she’d never been in before, the fact that it was Denali’s made it feel familiar.
Denali toed out of her shoes and set her purse down. “I have something for you,” she said suddenly, disappearing into her bedroom before Rosé to question her. She rifled through her closet, pulling out a box tucked away and grinning when she found the items she was looking for. It was still a risk, but this time she knew it was one worth taking. She took a deep breath, then rejoined Rosé in the living room. “I kept every mixtape you gave me, still listen to them sometimes,” she said, holding up the CD book in one hand.
“You did?” Rosé put her hand over her chest, beaming warmly. “Dee, that’s so sweet.”
She smiled, biting her lip and looking down, trying to fight away the nerves that crept back up. “I, um, I made you one too. I was going to give it to you after graduation but I chickened out,” she confessed as she handed the mixtape she had hidden among her possessions all these years to the woman she made it for. “I think the tracklist will explain why.”
Rosé’s lips parted in surprise as she gently took it from her. “To Rosie, with love,” she read the title before turning it over to see where Denali had written the songs in silver sharpie. And, sure enough, it was one love song after another, songs she knew well, that she knew the shorter woman spent her time carefully picking out each one. “Oh, Dee, this is beautiful. Honestly, I don’t know what I would’ve done if you gave it to me back then.”
Denali swallowed thickly. “I guess more importantly, what are you gonna do now?”
There was only a half-beat of silence before Rosé smirked, setting the disk on the dining room table before cupping Denali’s face and kissing her deeply, moving one hand from her face to wrap her arm around her body and pull her close. “I’ve always loved you, Denali. I’d just resigned myself to seeing you as the one that got away.”
Denali relaxed, arms looping around Rosé’s neck. “I’m not going anywhere.”

13. “Don’t be sorry… it was kind of cute, actually.”
______
Here’s the thing. Luke Patterson isn’t the tidiest person, exactly. His room tends to be messy, his things tend to be scattered all around the studio, and he can never find the shirt he’s looking for. Sometimes he wakes up in a Nirvana mood and all he can find are Green Day shirts. Sometimes he puts his journal down somewhere, because he has to grab a guitar before the riff in his head leaves him again. And then he forgets where he put it and searches for hours until Reggie, Alex, or Bobby hand it to him as if it was right there all along.
It’s just that he gets so into his music that he forgets things sometimes. He also forgets time a lot and then he doesn’t have any left to clean or bring organise his stuff. It drives his Mom rather mad, but Luke can’t help it. He tries, really, but two days later his room always seems to be back to its original state of chaos.
So imagine his surprise when he gets home after practice one night and finds his room all tidy and clean with small notes pinned to random objects, commenting things like ‘Do you really need this, Luke?’ or just ‘Hahaha.’ or ‘Omg, you kept this.’ in what he identifies as Reggie’s handwriting. He’s read enough of his country songs to know. Smiling, he picks up a stuffed bear Reggie once won for him at a fair they went to together when Alex and Bobby were both busy with their own families. Reggie pinned a note to it, saying ‘Nice to see you keeping the tokens of my affection.’
He hugs the bear close to his chest and keeps looking around his room for more of Reggie’s inane commentary. He finds dozens of notes, and decides to keep them where they are. They make something flutter beneath his ribcage, and fill him with warmth and a sense of comfort he only knows from playing his music. He’s not sure how he feels about Reggie coming to his house when he’s not there and rummaging through his things, but at the same time he knows there aren’t any secrets he’s keeping from him anyway, and Reggie knew about his latest fight with his mother. It was pretty bad, so Luke spent the night at the studio where his friend found him in the morning. So, Reggie knew he struggles with keeping his room clean again, causing him to fight with Emily and feel miserable about it, and he decided to help, apparently.
“I’m sorry for not asking first,” Reggie says suddenly, and Luke spins around to find him standing in the doorway, smiling a little sheepishly. “Your mom let me in,” he answers Luke’s unasked question.
“Don’t be sorry,” Luke says softly, gesturing around his room. “This… it was kind of cute, actually.”
Reggie leans against the doorframe and crosses his arms in front of his chest as he raises a suggestive eyebrow and smiles so brightly, Luke feels himself physically react to the sight.
“Aw, you think I’m cute, do you?”
Luke snorts.
“Yeah, man. The cutest.” He’s not lying. Reggie is… the best friend in the world, but he’s also beautiful, and funny, and Luke loves him so much, really.
Oh. Well, okay. That’s a new thought.
Luke hums curiously as he turns away from Reggie to hide the blush rising to his cheeks. He spots another note at the foot of his bed. ‘Remember when we used to pretend your bed is a stage and performed really bad versions of Queen songs on your first guitar?’
Luke does remember. And he feels warm all over again. Oh. So, Reggie? It’s Reggie for him? The decision is quickly made. Luke has always been an impulsive person, and if he wants something, he goes for it. Apparently he wants Reggie now.
He’s about to turn around when he feels Reggie wrap his arms around his waist from behind and rest his chin on Luke’s shoulder.
“You don’t have to hide your pretty blush, you know?” Reggie says, voice lower than usual. Luke feels it right down to his bones.
“Aw, you think I’m pretty, do you?” Luke says, matching Reggie’s tone from before and grinning as he turns his head. It’s an awkward angle, but they’re so close, their noses almost touching, and Luke suddenly has trouble breathing.
“Yeah, man. The prettiest,” Reggie replies, imitating Luke from before, but sounding no less sincere.
Luke hums again.
“This is new. I have to admit I did not see this one coming,” he says softly, curiously glancing at Reggie’s lips. “You and I?”
Reggie leans a little closer, and his lips are ghosting over Luke’s, almost touching, but not quite yet.
“Neither did I. But I had an epiphany while cleaning your room and finding all these memories of us,” Reggie says, his voice barely more than a whisper. He chuckles. “Well, there goes my heterosexuality.”
And then he kisses Luke, and Luke drops the bear he was still holding to turn in his arms and kiss him back, arms coming around his neck to keep him close.
“That’s overrated anyway,” he comments in between kisses, just before they fall onto Luke’s bed together. The very same one they used to play rockstars on when they were 11.
Later that night, Luke finds more notes as he happily sings ABBA songs to himself. ‘Hello pretty boy. What’s up?’ is written on a small yellow note on the corner of his mirror. On his CD copy of The Other Side of the Mirror by Stevie Nicks, Reggie left a note saying ‘I hope I get to kiss you one day just for owning this. Not sure if I mean that platonically… We should probably talk. I hope you don’t find this before I get a chance to talk to you. If you do… well. Surprise? Reggie is having a sexuality crisis and it’s all your fault.’
And when he picks out a fresh shirt from his closet, a note falls out informing him that Luke’s lack of sleeves on most of his shirts played a significant role in Reggie’s crisis about his sexuality.
“You dork,” he mumbles to himself, putting on a Fleetwood Mac shirt for good measure and singing Super Trouper as he dances down the stairs to help his mother with dinner.
“Aren’t you chipper today?” Emily says with a smile when she spots him. “I think Reggie was humming Dancing Queen when he left earlier. May I ask what put you two into such a delightful mood?”
Luke beams at her, shrugging as he does a pirouette.
“I think we’re in love, Mom,” he tells her honestly. He figures there is no need to lie to her, and he’s feeling way too happy to keep it to himself. Emily only looks a little surprised.
“With each other?” she asks.
Luke nods. “Yeah.”
Emily smiles and reaches out to squeeze Luke’s arm.
“Well, that’s lovely. He’s a fine young man, I’ve always thought so.”
Luke hugs her, just because he can and he doesn’t know why they fight so much when they also frequently have moments like this, when he feels so blessed to have her.
The next day, when Luke walks into the studio and finds his friends already gathered and ready with their instruments, he feels all warm and fluttery again as soon as he spots Reggie, so he walks right over to him and kisses him right on the mouth.
Bobby hoots, Alex claps, and Reggie is eager to kiss back.
“Sorry,” Luke murmurs against his lips.
“Luke?” Reggie says as he pulls back. “If you ever apologise for kissing me again, I’m gonna write a hundred country songs about you, and I will get famous with them, and you’ll forever be known as that weird queer country dude’s boyfriend.”
Luke laughs and raises his hands in surrender.
“What a horrible fate. Alright, no apologies from now on.”
He kisses Reggie again, and this time he doesn’t say sorry. He’s not actually sorry, anyway.

Somewhere in the Crowd There's You (Rosnali) - Joley
Summary: Denali and Rosé were best friends all through middle and high school, but had to part ways after graduating in 1998. But even years later, the one thing that always connected them were the mixtapes Rosé would make.
(bonus: denali's playlist for rosé)
ao3 link
