im asking this out of pure ignorance but I've always wondered how does hinduism handle people who are not hindu? i know Christianity is essentially 'be the right kind of christian or go to hell' (so much as to beleive that Jewish people are literally devils, for example) but i was wondering how hinduism deals w people who are in proximity but not of the same religion. also if a dalit or lower caste person converts from hinduism to another religion, how does that affect thier life and how they're treated? appreciate your answer if u feel like explaining ^__^

it depends, in some parts of the country the non hindu has the same status as the lower caste dalit by default – so exclusion but in most places its a detente where religious and caste endogamy is strictly maintained. housing and employment discrimination is v common. its actually much harder to marry under the special mariage act and violence against interfaith and intercaste couples by their own families is common. in 2023, the muslim is the designated enemy of the state. the christian was fooled by the british and/or money to give up their culture or is literally a foreign agent. if you're looking for a textual answer, the equivalent of the "infidel," there isn’t really one because the streamlining of the canonical religious texts and construction of the hindu is recent. hinduism has aimed to appropriate instead of convert.

in modern india, legally anyone who is not a christian or a muslim is treated as a hindu. you are hindu by default in india to the state, governed by hindu codes for marriage and inheritance. for indigenous tribals it is a matter of coercing their children to feel shame at the (state sponsored but outsourced to private religious groups, love privatisation!!!) residential schools about their animist practices and making them worship the proper gods. for sikhs, jains and buddhists their is marginally more toleration. but they are basically seen as wayward hindu sects. this does change when they're in conflict with the majority in a way that resists "national cohesion" – see sikh pogroms in 1984 and the recent moves against sikhism due to the invocation of khalistan in the farmers protests. when dalits convert to buddhism many right wingers will invoke the spectre of predatory conversions.

since you are supposed to be hindu by default, christians and muslims are then seen as invasive outsiders and conversions are regulated very strictly by many states. it is historically true that christian missionaries brought christianity as part of a broader civilising mission, but imo it says something really depressing about hinduism that its epithets for christians is 'ricebag converts' bc people apparently converted for a bag of rice. islam's foothold in the continent is older, accompanying immigration from the west as well as the sultanate and the mughals. returning these christians and muslims to the fold, or "ghar wapsi" is a major project of the hindutva right. note that india is home to one of the world's largest populations of muslims (~200mil).

lower caste dalits have long converted to christianity and islam but caste violence follows them there anyway. caste may have textual origins in religion and focus on ritual purity but it is a socioeconomic form of subjugation. this means that while still subject to caste violence, dalit christians and muslims will be denied redressal through state protections like legislations against anti caste violence or reservations because those are restricted to hindu dalits.

kitties who were outcast from previous groups they were a part of and find and live with each other. they are canonical mates even though theyre both dudes. they grow old together, but ravenpaw gets cancer and dies before barley (he lives to be considered old in warrior cats years). however ravenpaw wanted to be in the same kitty afterlife that barley will go to, so they can be together in kitty afterlife. barley is still alive though as far as we know and might be the oldest living cat in the series now. also i just think its funny to call little kitty cats "old man yaoi"

you and ellie had been friends since childhood really. you did everything together, you told each other your biggest secrets and shared gossips. she was your sunshine in the dark times of life. she was always there for you, and you were always there for her.

now both of you were at the last year of college. your evenings were spent with endless studying with ellie's help since she was the so called smart kid in the class. it was true. she was really smart, you always admired her for that, and for many other things too. she was the best thing that had happened to you. you often found yourself thinking about her more and more. you thought it was normal for best friends to think about each regularly, no?

this evening was no other than any other. you were sitting on your bed with your notebooks and laptop out while ellie at your desk as you were studying math. it was not your best subject, and most of times you didn't understand it, who does? ellie, surprisingly.

"you good?" she asks you as she turns around in the chair to face you. you look up at her and simple nod. the truth is, you weren't exactly focused on what's happening with math as ellie was explaining. she noticed you were somewhere else in mind.

she chuckles because she knows you're not good. the weather was cold but somewhat comforting. your hands in your pockets, ellie's hands next to her, they seem pretty empty, you thought. the scenery is beautiful. it's snowing in small flakes. the streets emtpy as the sun is setting slowly down.

"today's evening is beautiful." ellie breaks the comfortable silence between the two of you. you smile. "i agree. there's something special about it." you peak at her and notice her small pretty smile. suddenly the cold is rather warm under your coat, on your skin. you look before yourself hiding your maroon checks behind your scarf. ellie seems to notice everything, which means she noticed how you hid your face. she chuckles at sight of it, though.

ellie stops in her tracks after some time and you look behind yourself with confusion at her actions. "els? everything okay?" your voice sound concerned. she doesn't seems sad, she looks happy. she nods with a smile. you step closer to her, now facing her. you were around the same height.

she looks deeply into your eyes with her smile remaining. you chuckle at her intensive eye contact, but not breaking it. "ellie?" she brings her right hand to your cheek that was light pink because of the winter's coldness. you feel everything around the both of you just stops. you could feel how loud and fast your heart beat is. ellie probably too.

she slowly leans closer to you, and gently presses her lips against yours. you always wondered how her lips could feel. they are soft, you finally got your answer.

the wind slowly catches up and blows your hair out of the hold of your warm scarf. she puts both of her hands on your cheeks and deepens the kiss with her love. your stomach is a mess. all the butterflies trying to escape.

she slowly pulls away and rest her forehead against yours witb her sheepish smile. you chuckle and hug her around her waist to pull her closer. everything is warm in this cold right now, you never felt like that with anyone before, ellie on the same boat.

"i wanted to do this for so long." she whispers as she holds you close. there is nothing you can do other then melt at her words and actions.

Just so it's clear, one of my big dni crits is this:

TW: My rant includes HEAVY topics of ed (eating disorders) and intentionally starving yourself/unhealthy weight loss 🙁.

This post is also ULTRA long, will definitely contain grammar and spelling mistakes, and I'm not going to say 100% everything here is accurate information, as I'm a human and I make mistakes too.

Let me get this clear, I dont mean anyone harm with this post. My intention isn't to hate or attack/hurt anyone to make them feel upset. I know that having an ed is a serious matter. I have friends and family who actively have/had these kinds of eds, so im not uneducated on this subject and I do understand it to a very in-depth degree. This is not to say I know everything about this topic, however.

It is definitely not easy to recover from, and lots of people struggle from it every day. I am NOT saying people with this disorder are any less human than anyone else. I'm saying it's toxic for those who do have it since it actually harms your body a lot, and pushing it on others (not the fact you have it in the first place) is something I don't support.

So respectfully, if you do support/promote eds as a positive thing, or are/follow/interact with blogs who do, BLOCK ME AND DNI. thank you.

I love everyone for who they are inside, regardless of what their body looks like. And I'm telling you right now, as someone who tried so hard to have a perfect body and stop eating bc im super insecure, it's not worth it, and it makes you feel so shitty. I love you, whoever is reading this, no matter what. So please don't change who you are just to make others happy :( <3

So I was looking thru tumblr, and this one post kept getting shown to me where people were talking about basically the idea of: "its worth it to keep losing that undesired weight, you'll see results soon" as like a motivational thing. The tags (straight up tells you it's supposed to be inspo to becoming skinny and supports the idea having an ed is the only way to get a dream bod), and their whole blog had ed encouragement/motivation. To keep...starving, i guess.?? Despite their user being about being strong and healthy, nothing about this is healthy or keeps your body strong.

I didn't decide to write a whole rant about just that part of the post because I didn't start getting super concerned until i read the notes/comments (since i had seen a lot of these 'tw : ed' blogs before already). What I saw was that tons of users were promoting starving yourself as a goal and a good thing, and basically glorifying having an ed. And also using kpop idols with skinny and perfect figures like wonyoung to tell others that (almost a literal direct quote from this user-) 'us ed people don't want to be helped and we won't stop starving ourselves until we reach the weight we want.'

"You see it as negativity cause you're not disordered." KEEP IN MIND THE PERSON THEY'RE TALKING TO USED TO ACTUALLY HAVE AN ED (the screenshot below is the person they were talking to). I understand you can't push people to get help if they don't want it, but you have to draw a line when you start saying that every person with ed doesn't want help, which just isnt true. I looked at their blog, and it was all just calculating how many calories they ate and burned every day. Most of the posts they basically only totaled 300 calories a day. THAT IS SUPER SICK ☹️. An average human needs like 2000+ calories a day. It actively influences people to copy them by posting and blogging this SUPER unhealthy weight loss. It IS NOT positive on any level. It does nothing good for you. You won't feel any happier when you look in the mirror if all you can feel is pure hunger because you won't give your body what it needs. This is so sad to me because all the comments had people trying to ask how to start starving themselves, and every blog I clicked on all had ed triggers on their posts and bios. Some of those blogs were saying NOT to become like them because they can't see themselves recovering now that they're in too deep.

As said by people online who actually had and got through having an ed, they have explained it is very unhealthy and they were glad to recover. So even though I do not have an ed, and you might think I shouldn't be "judging" people who have them, there are plenty of formerly ed diagnosed people who know the bad effect it has on others/had on them because they can accurately relate. You can still educate people on a subject even if you yourself do not have to suffer from it/have it, as long as you're doing it properly with proven facts (literally all credible research you do anywhere backed by science and experts will prove eds aren't healthy). People educate themselves to teach others about other illnesses, ongoing or past wars in history, etc, they don't have firsthand experience with/from. And they can still be just as valid sometimes.

My whole point here is that on tumblr and so many other social media platforms, I keep seeing people (posts like this and whole blogs centered around this stuff,) encouraging (mainly young) girls to stop eating altogether to have a body that society and other people are more satisfied with. That's why, for a while, I also tried to do the same because of the people saying it was a positive thing to gain a bad relationship with food and start counting your calories to be perfect. I'm also someone who struggles with body image and being shamed for gaining weight. But at some point hou need to realize hurting your body and mental state is SO WRONG. NOBODY is perfect. So don't push you or anyone else to be. I learned this, and I get its super hard to ignore the judgment forced onto you by society and your surroundings, but there will be people who appreciate you just how you are now. Like me.

So with all that said, the moral here is:

Don't starve urself (on purpose. Bc some people genuinely have trouble eating and starve themselves non intentionally. I have friends who do this 😭)

You're perfect how u are now without being as slim as your idols (and even K-pop idols don't tell others usually to be like them because they know that their companies forcing them to strictly control their weight isn't something they want fans to look up to).

Don't force (potential) ed on others

Don't encourage unhealthy relationship with your body and food

I do support people with eds, as long as they aren't trying to make it something others should look up to, and aspire to have.

If you are someone who wants to normalize having an ed as healthy or positive, please do not interact with this blog and feel free to block me :(

do i have a presentation due at 8am that i have barely started even though its midnight? yes. however i was thinking again about the category 5 ctommy event last night and all the things i talked or saw people post about and it got me thinking

i was especially thinking about how ctommy is too often, in fan interpretations, forced into the role of the perfect, quiet, palatable victim — which, i mean, we've all made various posts on the subject, i don't need to get into the how again — but i was trying to think about why.

because on one hand, a good part of it, its true, circles back to what society has deemed the "acceptable" victim, which many of us have internalised and unknowingly refer back to, hence why many automatically try to sand ctommy down to be more "pitiful" (not saying people do this intentionally btw . we all have biases like that and they show up in different ways . i just like Talking about this stuff this is Not a callout or god forbid telling people to harass fic writers they disagree with. Ok.)

but i also think, in ctommy's case, a lot of it can come from. projection? well this might be the case with many other characters obviously but im focusing on ctommy here because like. i think he's a character who's very relatable for so many people, who are also loud and not subtle or discreet and who feel annoying most of the time, and a lot of whom are kids and teenagers. and something that's always struck me when reading comments etc about him is theres this sentiment of- when this fictional character is annoying it's seen as loveable and endearing, so why isn't it the case for me, as a person, in real life? a lot of those fans have also been hurt or perhaps even abused and found a way to relate through ctommy's own abuse

and so i think sometimes this tendency to "sand ctommy down" is less out of a desire to actually reduce his character but rather because, through him, they want their hurt and pain to be recognised. and as we all know, when ctommy is quiet, that is so unusual that in fics, it often immediately strikes a reaction of "oh, what happened to you, who hurt you". it's the idea that him being annoying and loud is missed, but people only realise that when he's gone quiet. so the more "quiet" and "docile" he is shown as, the more striking that reaction from other characters will be, and the more support he receives. im not in any way saying this is something you should apply to real people or anything, im saying that this is a trend not just in ctommy fics but in general media — if you're someone who is loud and brash, it's often portrayed like the only way people will acknowledge that you have feelings at all is if you lose that "spark", and suddenly people miss you being annoying.

and suddenly, it makes a lot of sense why so many fic authors write ctommy as so oddly ooc and quiet and pliable and docile — because they've been taught that's what a victim should be, but they're not like that! and you can live vicariously through a fictional character who's able to undergo a much more drastic outward transformation than you and be showered in love for it, and theres a desire for that to happen to them in real life, to have their hurt actually acknowledged. is this word vomit does anyone understand what im trying to say here

I like to think of myself as a man of many capabilities, an iron will, a strength of character, an indomitable whatsit, a certain affability, a certain wit, irrespective of my Aunt's remarks on that matter. I may not be the most organized chap, nor the most tidy or capable of ironing, but I hardly see folding socks as being the measure of a man, what?

My employers seemed to hold a different opinion on the subject, though they often relied upon me for my quick-thinkedness, not that I had proven myself to be entirely reliable when fishing one out of the soup... I'll admit I often found myself in the reverse position, my employer pulling me out of some scheme or another gone pear-shaped...

One occasion left my employer, a Mr. Halloway, relying on his manservant, that is to say myself, to preform a scheme of his own invention, and he made it clear as... well something that is really quite clear, that it is imperative that this remain top secret. And a dashed difficult secret to keep. You see the lieu of this scheme happened to be Lady Halloway's Manor, a family reunion was to take place on the premises at the same time as this plot and well... I rather quickly found myself in somewhat soupy waters...

I had found the teapot, an ironing board, a frying pan, a box of matches and a bed-sheet, but I must have been struck by the same affliction that makes my good friend Barmy the man that he is, well you see I forgot what to do with the blasted things!

Then, in my moment of hapless peril did a Knight in black and pinstripe offer rescue, seemingly materializing out of the air itself!

"Excuse me, Mr. Wooster, I couldn't help but observe that you seem to be having some trouble tying these sheets around this teapot. Should you be requiring assistance?" he inquired, voice low and smooth and eloquent as my ears have ever heard, and I have spent my years among the noblesse, I have heard eloquence!

"Ah! Er, I mean that is to say no! That is to say no thank you Mr..." I sputtered hopelessly. You see the man was quite tall, standing a few inches above my own head, which is, you'll note, some 6-and-something feet from the ground. I'll admit I felt rather dwarfed in that moment, not that I particularly disliked the hastened pumping feeling in my chest.

"Jeeves." said Jeeves.

"Jeeves, right, yes. You need not worry yourself, Mr. Jeeves, rest assured that the Wooster brain will be able to... wrap itself around this conundrum in some way or another, what?" I assured him, not so steely in my conviction as I would have hoped...

"Indeed, Mr. Wooster... Though may I inquire as to the purpose of this... endeavour?" he asked once more, taking a hesitant glance at the ensemble of disjunctive materials I had amassed for what purpose?

I must say, feeling this man, Jeeves, broad chested and fit as he was looming over myself... I'd be hard-pressed to remember my own name at a time like this.

"Ah... ha, right... er, no, thank you, I believe I'll just... oh, well you know how these things work themselves out, hey...?" I replied, more useless and brainless as I'd ever been, which, my Aunts would say, is quite impressive.

"Indeed, Mr. Wooster." he spoke, and I couldn't help but notice the slight upward twitch of his lips and the cool, all-knowing shimmer in his dark eyes.

I perused the hall upon entering it, greeting those I knew with idle pleasantries, introducing myself to those I did not. I mingled, engaged in topics of conversation far below my cognitive abilities though entertaining enough to stave off the urge to fabricate an explanation to excuse my early departure.

After some considerable time spent in placid conversation with distant acquaintances, I took notice of a man consorting among his companions by the grand piano. He appeared to be of the noblesse, although his attire denoted a certain unfamiliarity with appropriate dress for such an occasion, this demarked him from his associates who, to their credit, were composed marginally more suitably.

I parted ways with the gentleman with whom I'd been engaged in lacking conversation, on the premise of greeting an old friend who had newly arrived to the banquet. The man, chattering animatedly, took no notice of my approach as his hair, seemingly soft and almost buoyant, bounced atop his head as he spoke. His friends appeared off-put by my presence, one of them nudging him until he turned to face me.

"What ho!" the man greeted, his cheeriness alarming me somewhat as his wide eyes, the color of resplendent aventurine, seemed to beam brightly from within. "Bertram- Well, no, Bertie- yes Bertie Wooster." he added with a broad grin.

"Mr. Wooster..." I replied, temporarily at a loss for words as I met the man's extended hand with my own. His were cool, nimble, slender. I noted his fingertips on my hand, slightly calloused. I understood now why his party was huddled by the piano. "My name is Sir Reginald Jeeves."

"Oh, yes, well, good to meet you, Mr. Jeeves, rather... I say... You wouldn't happen to know who's bally shindig this would be, would you Jeeves?" he asked, leaning on the side of the pianoforte with a furrowed brow.

"I do believe the invitations were sent out on the part of a Sir Halloway, Mr. Wooster." I answered.

"And this Halloway fellow, I haven't had the pleasure as of yet, is he a... well is he a musical sort of chap?" Mr. Wooster inquired further, momentarily eyeing the instrument.

"It is my understanding that such is the case, Mr. Wooster."

"Oh, that is good news, eh, Jeeves? What is it that that Andersen johnny said about music. Something about words failing and so forth?" he asked, cheeks rosier with burgeoning excitement as his fingers seemed to play the notes on the piano's lid.

“Where words fail, music speaks.” I answered as he looked upon me with a kind of joyous gratitude I felt entirely undeserving to receive but grateful to witness.

"Truer words, what?"

"Indeed, Mr. Wooster..."

I am SO close to finishing Baldur's Gate 3... I think, I've been saying that for the past 20 hours lol, but I really want to gush about Karlach! Once I've actually finished the game I'll probably make a proper post talking about her in a more structured way from a disability standpoint but I just really want to talk about her now lol.

I did not know how much my inner child needed to see someone like her on screen. Strange thing to say about a character from a game that's intro features worms crawling into your eye in hell but its true.

I have massive burn-like scars all over my my lower body, especially my legs, and while I always (mostly) saw the amputations they came with as just a part of me, I had much more negative feelings about those scars, well into my young adulthood, but especially as a teenager. It wasn't helped by the fact that while most folks had the decency to keep their comments about my visible disability... neutral-ish, the comments about my scars ranged from "you should cover those up" to "that's discusting" and young children literally crying at the sight of them. On top of that, every time a character with scars like mine was in the media, they were either the villain, used to teach others a lesson about not being mean or to teach that chatacter a lesson about how beauty is on the inside or how to love their appearance despite thier scars (that they'll be sure to tell you they think are hideous).

But karlach isn't any of those things. She's confident and literally walks around armour that show her scars by default. No one calls her gross or tells her to cover them. Her scars are never brought up as a negative at all, at least that ive seen, they're never something that detracts from her appearance. She never tries to hide them or gets insecure about them. When you romance her, there's no comment about if you're sure you can find "someone with scars like hers" attractive. Characters in the game dont find her attractive in spite of them, they just find her attractive. Full stop. They're just, there. And what's more, the fandom, for the most part, seems to agree. I have seen so many people swooning over her, and they almost never bring the scars up. People don't care, they just think she's hot! (There will always be outliers of course but they seem few and far between in my circles at least lol).

And my God, it's SO refreshing! Don't get me wrong, it's not inherently bad to have chatacters be insecure about things like scars (Wyll has a few moments of insecurity around his, and I think it's done well) but it's so nice for it to not be the central focus for once, or even really a big at all. Especially for a woman character.

I was so convinced as a teenager that no one would find me attractive because of those scars. Scars like Karlach's. I'm older now, I have worked through it all, and any lingering insecurities I had on the subject were shut down when me and my partner got together. But 15/16 year old me desperately needed to see a chatacter like Karlach, and im so happy she exists now!

WAIT ALSO BECAUSE FUCKING we don't see the letter in the present. we don't see the bomb or the box either, they light the garden waste on fire and the area explodes. so we have no evidence of what was ACTUALLY buried there.

because it's been proven in the series before that things that happen in the past flashbacks sometimes aren't accurate, like it's THEIR recollection of what happened and not necessarily how it was. like with kitty's story about her sister and the whole thomas thorne affair.

BUT those were both directly established as the characters talking about the events and not just. a depiction the events like cap's was. so I don't know what the rules are with regard to past events we see but aren't explicitly stated as being a recollection. like. because he SAYS it was a top secret prototype limpet mine only him and havers knew about it, until "he left me- left for the front" and then that he had to bury it on his own with the blueprints.

but we KNOW categorically that the ghosts can and do misremember things or put their own spin on what happened. so all of that information. I mean it being a bomb is pretty undeniable. but. the fact that only he and havers knew about it, the fact that he buried it by himself, the fact that he buried it with the blueprints, the fact that it was called operation william, the fact that havers left at all. all of that. is subject to question. because we have NO tangible physical evidence in the present of anything he said.

florence is still there, and the ghosts are specifically cautious about mentioning her sister, which corroborate kitty's story. they found thomas' musket ball, he can pull out the letter, his cousin brought the name button to the house, and his wound is visible. pretty solid evidence. pat and julian are modern enough to be in the news and stuff, so they're easy. the plague ghosts left a pit of skeletons. fanny gets flung from the window every morning, not the strongest proof but it's there. they made a documentary about the bone plot so that's humphrey sorted. there was a thing on tv about the caveman reconstruction and the gifted club or w/e from robin. mary's all covered in smoke and dust and puffs up at any mention of fire and can make a burning smell.

cap has NOTHING. NOTHING. there's a picture of a group of soldiers on the ghost chart and an arrow pointing to captain. that's IT. is ANYTHING about him true? where did they get that picture from. does it have his name on it. SOME OF THE GHOSTS WERE THERE WHEN HE WAS STATIONED AT BUTTON HOUSE. why do they never say anything. do they know. how much do they know. surely they would know about the letter. and the bomb. what the fuck is going on why didnt anyone else say anything. WHAT. IM LOSING MY MIND RN

thoughts I've had while re reading poa as a marauders fan, part 2 (chapters 5)

chapter 5

- girlfriend???? girlfriend???? Percy doesn't have a girlfriend Penelope and him are just very gay friends, his boyfriend is oliver

- everytime it's mentioned Percy has a girlfriend I want to die (I have nothing against Penelope at all but they're both very very gay whyyy are they together)

- did Ron just say a murder wouldn't mess with harry if him and hermione were there wow the audacity

- the way Remus casually has a bunch of chocolate with him

- wonder what memories could possibly help Remus cast a patronus since most of his better ones probably cause more pain than everything

- idk why the fact remus knew harrys name is pointed out cause he's famous and basically everyone knows him just by his looks

What butch and femme means

Now onto stone identities, when we talk about identities like butch and femme and say explicitly that they involve social, erotic, emotional reasons and contexts, stone terms are part of the erotic contexts.

Stone femme means a femme who has certain boundaries when it comes to giving or touching their partner(s) in a sexual situation, someone who doesn't like/feel comfortable/would rather not touch their partner(s) in certain ways for whatever reason they might have, it's important to understand that each stone femme has their own subjective boundaries and what, and to what extent, they're comfortable with, so you shouldn't assume one size fits all, same goes for stone butches. The counterpart of stone femme is a stone butch and that is a butch who has boundaries regards receiving/being touched by their partner(s) in sexual situations, a butch who doesn't like/feel comfortable/would rather not be touched in certain ways for whatever reason they might have.

These don't have to be because of trauma, I have seen before people saying that stone femmes/stone butches are only valid if their boundaries are attached to trauma, that's not true, you are allowed to just have boundaries, you're allowed to not want to do something, more importantly, you shouldn't be doing something you don't want in bed, all you need is someone compatible with you.

Stone butch and stone femme, in that order, can get confused with stone top: a person who is exclusively a top and has/may have boundaries around being touched and receiving during sex; and stone bottom: a person who is exclusively a bottom and has boundaries pertaining to giving during sex.

Can a butch be a stone bottom or a femme be a stone top? Absolutely. The first two sexual roles, stone butch and stone femme, as far as I'm concerned*, are related to and pertain to the butch/femme identities, culture, dynamics and relationships, a sense of history in the community if you will, now the last two, stone top/stone bottom, any person regardless of their identity can use.

*disclaimer: being a stone femme doesn't make me an expert or authority on the subjects, this is my experience and my knowledge.

so re: death of the author in fandom, are you talking about fans theories that add to or ignore textual material in canon? This isn't something I've paid attention to at all in fandom and now I'm kind of scratching my head trying to figure out how you do Death of the Author Wrong.

Ohhh haha, people use it extremely wrong. The most extreme example I've seen is the person sincerely, not-smooth-sharking convinced it was people calling for "problematic" authors to be (at least metaphorically, in a social-death sense) killed, which is a very silly hyperbolic example, but common ideas include:

The idea that it is not possible due to DotA to provide a reading of a text that is unsupported and can be shot down; that DotA means "all readings are equally valid and true and canon is never real", and every reader can say whatever they like and it's "canon". (Think, idk, the text says the curtains are blue in a totally unambiguous way, a fan insists their reading the curtains are red is "equally valid" because "just because the author wrote that they're blue doesn't mean they are, death of the author!", for a silly example.)

The idea that death of the author is about stuff like "it's cool to still buy HP merchandise, because JKR being the author doesn't matter if we decide she's 'dead'!"- in other words, that "death of the author" means acting as though the author literally doesn't exist in real life. Discussions about boycotts of living authors are not about literary analysis, needless to say, and DotA has nothing to do with it.

A belief that DotA represents a kind of empirical fact about How To Correctly Do Literary Analysis and that if you are not taking that perspective, you are doing analysis wrong. The idea that literary criticism is like physics where you learn the fact of the second law of thermodynamics and it's always true and not taking it into consideration is a factual error. DotA, and poststructural analysis as a whole, is not exactly an uncontentious subject! (Nor does every post-Barthes theorist who uses it to some extent take it in one single direction.)

The first one, IME, is the most common thing, but YMMV.

I find the main issue tends to people hearing about DotA and being like "oh, this is A Fact that you get taught when you learn how to analyse texts and it's always true in every way it can be true". (I'd also say there's a lot of general confusion around the idea a reader can bring extra-textual knowledge of e.g. an author's biographical details that can influence their reception of a text even if it isn't necessarily inherent to the text itself, but that's the sort of thing I find poststructuralists argue a lot more about among themselves, lmao.)
