Today on popping the corn and feeding the children, what do you folks think of this discussion? :)

I'm always curious to hear what other Trek fans, especially queer Trek fans, think about our place in Trek history and how we fare as the queer participants within our fandom. What have your experiences been like?

Overwhelmingly I've found a great reception and a welcoming attitude, but I admit that has increased considerably since the 90s. However, there are still some Trek fans who seem to be vehemently in denial about queer history in Star Trek, or the fact that anyone who has worked on Trek has pro-LGBT attitudes. This always surprises me considering some of the blatant queer content we have already seen in Star Trek such as the Jadzia Dax and Lenara Kahn kiss.

Anyway, I enjoyed the discussion that followed and seeing the overwhelming outpouring of support coming from Star Trek fans in response to this thread.

Here was my two cents contribution:

"No, what they said was factual.

Have you forgotten Nichelle Nichols was indeed an African American woman in the core seven bridge crew back in 1966?

Or the fact that Gene Roddenberry went out of his way to write The Motion Picture Novel, creating the term "T'hy'la: friend, brother, lover" so that fans could choose which interpretations of Kirk and Spock they saw fit? He also embraced K/S fans and hired a number of them to write the earliest Star Trek novels, including the very first official one (The New Voyages Vol. 1 & 2) which included slash fiction as well as Gene's approval/forward in the books.

In case anyone has forgotten, here's a little bit of background on Gene Roddenberry and his perspectives on queerness in Star Trek.

He admitted that in his early life he was very affected by how society and culture treated the LGBT community, and that he too found himself subjugating and judging others for that lifestyle because it was what people did at that time. As he got older and had more life experience, he began working with a number of queer artists in Hollywood -- and through TOS, a number of queer individuals began asking questions about Kirk and Spock.

Instead of vehemently shutting down this perspective, Roddenberry was intrigued, and saw potential to tap into a large audience (LGBT) that most others didn't want to go near or acknowledge publicity-wise. He saw it as an opportunity to expand the fanbase while also pushing yet another envelope.

But with the heat already on the show for what they'd already pushed, he found he was often stuck between what he'd like to do and what production would let him get away with. There are a number of Kirk and Spock scenes in scripts that got cut out for leaning a little too obviously romantic. Tiny trickles of that content still made it in were infamous moments like the backrub scene in Shore Leave. Even the 2009 movie had a K/S moment while Spock Prime and Kelvin Spock talked that was written and filmed that was cut out of the final product.

Queer subtext and coding has always been relentlessly weeded away at with an excuse ready to go for why they always try to cut us out, but we all know it's because they are scared of the homophobic backlash and ratings hits. Look how violently homophobes went after the gay romance episode of The Last of Us **just this year**. This has always been our reality, so for someone like Roddenberry to make efforts in the 70s? That was massive.

But Gene as well as the queer/slash Trek community managed to accomplish some things in the 70s which I'm surprised more folks don't talk about or give much credit.

In the same TMP novel which features "T'hy'la" and the famous footnote, Gene cleverly wrote Kirk with a bisexual/pansexual lens: Kirk describes himself as *preferring* women but being open to "physical love in **any** of its many Earthly, alien, and mixed forms." (Direct quote from Genes book). Basically, Captain Kirk was DTF with whoever if there was a connection, which was a very progressive take for a character in a novel written in 1979, but made sense for the future which would have a lot less hang ups about sex and love compared to our current rather puritan/conservative society.

I also prefer women, but I married a man. Shout out to Gene Roddenberry for giving us a seat at the table back in the 70's when folks *still* try to insist there is no place for K/S or queer concepts in Trek, because he made efforts -- however small -- to employ queer people and show queer perspectives. According to David Gerrold, LGBT+ representation was a big thing that Gene personally pushed for in TNG and wanted various depictions of love/couples in the Risa scenes, to name one example.

In the 70s, fanzines led to meetings and swapped fanmade magazines, which got so big that they needed hotel centers, then convention centers, then one day the TOS cast came to one and what we know as modern fan conventions were born -- inspiring even George Lucas who attended Trek conventions in the 70s and saw how popular Trek was in syndication; it was a great climate to launch his Space Opera. Star Wars then became so huge that we got TMP.

But none of that would have happened without the level of organization, passion, and creativity that those fans poured into Star Trek and their characters after it got cancelled and went into syndication.

Without queer folks we wouldn't have George Takei, Theodore Sturgeon who gave us Tribbles, Bill Theiss and his amazing TOS costumes, Mike Minor's art direction, Merritt Butrick, David Gerrold (writer for TOS, TAS, TNG) to name a few of many queer contributors to Trek that Roddenberry respected and tried to go to bat for wherever he could in a climate that was absolutely impossible to gain an inch in.

At a time during the 70s and 80s when so many people resented and feared the queer community and wanted us to disappear, especially in the 80s during the AIDS epidemic which many homophobes claimed was "God's punishment to the gay community" or "Gods's answer" to our "hedonism", thinking we'd gotten our just desserts and should just disappear . . .

During that time, Gene Roddenberry gave us queer folks a place to say: "You know what? Sure. Write your stories. TV says you guys shouldn't exist, they pull books with queer people off the shelves and burn them. Laws exist specifically to forbid you guys from loving each other, and call you mentally ill. You can't even hold hands in public. But I'm going to validate you guys and invite you to write novels or work for me, try to see what we can get by production, and allow you to see yourselves in my characters if you want to. There's a place for you in our fandom."

He gave us bi/pan Kirk, he gave us K/S is open to interpretation. In Phase 2 Kirk's surviving nephew Peter, son of his brother Sam from Operation: Annihilate!, was going to be written as gay and living on the Enterprise with his partner -- that also got chopped and reworked into a script that wouldn't get used until decades later. That was huge at a time that being queer was officially listed as a mental illness, and villainized due to the AIDS crisis.

So before you try to dismiss or tell K/S + queer Trek fans whether or not they deserve a seat at the table, remember that Gene Roddenberry was among the **first** to pull that seat out for us in a climate that was ruthlessly against LGBT+ folks." -- 1Shirt2ShirtRedShirtDeadShirt

Dying Markle brand

So I went on a training today on new features in Meltwater tracking. It is a tool we have at work for marketing and brand tracking. So, its after hours now and to try and learn how to do it for my brand I decided to try to test Markle brand.... you know just for FUN!

so this is really funny... just so that you can see my search terms, only one... and the period it is the last year.... All stats are the last year, up until this moment.

So I guess the next thing you will ask is what is the two big spikes in mentions across all platforms?

The first.... January 5 is Harry Spares book specifically related to the dog bowl incident...see below...

and the second big spike is...

the "near catastrophic car chase, that wasn't!"...

other than dog bowls and phantom car chases, it has been a rather dull year...

Even her birthday only garnered 25000 mentions....

Pretty low comparables to the 23000 that mentioned the renaissance tour and Kelly Rowland et Washington..

Compared to her all time worst day of the year 20 August when she got only 4200 mentions...

Of course it is a battle on sentiment to see who hates on her worst...

Right now the winner in the last year to today, is you guessed it, the USA! There are more people talking about MM there than anywhere else in the world. And notice, Nigeria, one of the most populous countries in the world has not even made the list... do you think that is why she has moved onto to a new fanbase in Nigeria... to top up her mentions and numbers... LOL. The Commonwealth has abandoned the Sussexes. And Madam is looking for new markets to change her social score... LOL

Notice that in the last year, even given Invictus, she got only 18000 mentions from people with accounts in Germany... dudes, you have to host Invictus somewhere MeghanFriendly... Germany is not it!

Anyway peeps, this is just a quick window into the Meltwater tool and how it can dig down deep into all internet traffic linked to a particular name.

I might do a bit more digging over the coming days, as I am going on holiday and there is rain predicted at the sea, so I might go all the way there to be stuck indoors.

Catherine Queen of Positivity

So someone asked for a comparison to Catherine. I have dug around a bit this morning.

I had to use a Boolean string to get all of the Catherine mentions into one sample, well this is because Catherine's brand is diluted with mentions of Princess of Wales, Kate Middleton etc, but I think this is the total from 1 Jan to today.

So as you can see versus Markles 3,4 million mentions, Catherine is on 2,9 million mentions across all platforms.

The two biggest spikes are her birthday and the Coronation.

Her birthday garnered 75 653 mentions to Mega's 25 000.

Importantly, note the green percentage increases over the results for the same period last year.

Where Mega's numbers are in decline Catherines daily mention avg and total mentions are up on last year.

Catherine's least mentions this year was 22 August at 2850.

Where it is really different is on the Sentiment scoring and location.

Where Mega's sentiment score is mostly negative (38%), you can see that only 13% of mentions on Catherine are negative, 51% are neutral and 34% are positive compared to Mega's 17% positive, so Catherine is viewed nearly twice as positively as Mega.

As you can see, location sources for Catherine's fans are almost equally US and UK. And like Mega, she has followers in Australia, Canada and France. And both have some fans in Italy, but what a surprise Catherine has a healthy chunk of fans in Brazil! And even Vietnam and Mexico!

Which now makes me think that the only reason Germany got on Mega's list was because of Invictus.

So I decided to see where else Catherine has fans by checking out the next pages of locations. (I will need to go back and do the same for Mega)

William is not trailing Mega by very far, with 3.14 million mentions in the same period.

Notice he is also up on the same period last year at a similar rate of increased mentions as Catherine between 3 and 4%. While Mega mentions are 21% down on the previous period. So I reckon people are getting bored.

William's locations and sentiment are a bit surprising.

More people in the US than the UK are mentioning William and the positive 25% versus the negative comments 24% are surprising. I need to did down and see if this is attacks by the SS.

So this is now filtered to give just the negative mentions of William.

More negative comments originate in the US. I notice though that a lot of the negative mentions refer to him being impatient regarding efforts to aid the planet. The AI language tool is picking those up as negative reports. So it is not foolproof.

So I think this will give everyone insight into why Mega's PR is full of flowery positive words and hyperbole and why it goes out in waves, her PR agency are desperately trying to change the negative sentiment by flooding the internet and online news sources with puff pieces.

There are some other features I would like to explore with this tool, but I need to go and pack for holiday!

What's something that frustrates you the most when trying to critique art?

Internal ethical consistency.

When stories establish what they're going to take seriously and what they're not, it becomes extremely odd when they go back on their own word. A prime example would be the way RPGs have you slaughtering mooks by the truckloads but then when you reach the mastermind of evil go "The good option would be to spare them uwu."

Warcraft is probably the worst offender of this, where every character is committing three genocides before breakfast, and then throughout BFA and Shadowlands they try to get you to take genocide seriously. Or how they'll have the Red Dragons remember how the Deathlord slaughtered the Red Dragonflight in pursuit of a mount, but Malfurion turns around and lets the Horde Champion make a decision on whether or not to let someone bury their sister in the barrow dens despite being the cause of the extenuating circumstances in the first place.

Warcraft will say "We need to punish this war criminal" and I'm always surprised when they're talking about someone other than me. Garrosh committed genocide so the Horde can rule the world. Sylvanas committed genocide to break the cycle of life and death. I commit genocide every twelve seconds in the hopes of getting some slightly shinier pants.

I think "Ethical Consistency" is more important than the ethics a story operates on themselves. You want to create a crapsack world where murder is as common as a handshake, by all means. But if you start treating things that are objectively less severe than murder as signs of psychopathy that's when things are getting fucked up.

It's even worse when a fanbase operates on this kind of cognitive dissonance. You could have a story that features government neglect, corporations running roughshod over the nation without any care or oversight, and people treating their own children like retirement investments and the fanbase will then point at arguably the least evil person in the room and go "They're the real psychopath."

For all my criticisms of Steven Universe, it does remain consistent on its ethics to their own peril. They say "Everything is forgivable" and by god do they stick to it, unburdened by all those sensible people with their logic and common sense.

I respect that, in the same way I respect the people at Jackass subjecting themselves to grevious bodily harm and not letting any amount of pain deter them from future stunts.

The lights on the stage slowly start to dim down, and the crowd starts to get louder. You can't help but grin widely in your position at the backstage, ready to feel that familiar feeling of adrenaline rush through your veins each time you perform for your fans.

You've been in the music industry for quite a few years now, but you blew up recently with your second studio album. It was all so unexpected: the fame rising hotly each day, your fanbase increasing exponentially, and you getting the exposure you've always dreamed of. Music is your life, you've always wanted to impact the world with your music, and now here you are, ready to perform in your first arena.

The arena fits up to 9,000 people, and you were taken by surprise when you were informed that the concert is sold out. You start to feel the nerves kicking in, so you do a little breathing exercise you always do whenever anxiety starts to make its way to you.

"Hey, you'll be fine," your guitarist and best friend, Mia says. She hugs you tightly. "You are one of the best. All those people out there are here to see you rock and perform. You will do so wonderful."

"Thank you Mia," you smile at her. She acknowledges your smile, and your bandmates all go up on the stage, leaving you behind. They always start off with an intro before your entry. As they all walk up the stage, the crowd starts to scream even louder.

The intro lasts around 30 - 40 seconds, before it's your turn to go up. "You can do this," you whisper to yourself. You then make your way to the stage, and the screaming gets even louder, the crowd going absolutely wild to see you.

"Thank you everyone for coming!" You say in your mic, the crowd continuing to cheer you on. "I hope we all have the best time ever. I can't believe it: it's our first ever arena show!" The cheering and screaming continues on and you take a second to take in the crowd. The largest crowd of people is out there supporting you. You know you have to make it the most memorable experience for everyone out there, and for yourself.

Your band starts to play, and you start to sing the opening song. You've sung all these songs so many times; you've lost count. But each time you enjoy singing them even more. Music is in your soul, it's what makes you who you are.

You have prepared one of the longest setlist you've ever performed. It lasts for almost 2 hours, but to you, it feels like it was just a few minutes. This is definitely one of your favorite concerts, the crowd is insane, they are singing every lyric back to you. You love to be interactive with your fans so you have a few interactions with them throughout the show. You get so many bouquet of flowers, stuff toys, and see some of the most heart touching signs in the crowd.

You have just finished performing your last song of the evening, and the crowd is louder than ever. No one in the arena is feeling a lack of energy. Your bandmates come on your side and you all hug each other, big smiles on your faces.

"This is one of the most memorable nights of my life," you say in the mic. "You all mean the whole world to me, and the support you give me is overwhelming." You feel tears form in your eyes but you control yourself from letting them fall. "I hope every single person present here discovers peace and love in there life. You all deserve the whole world - actually, scratch that - you all deserve the whole fucking universe, and I would be a goner without you guys. Thank you for coming tonight! I hope I'll see most of you in the meet and greet!"

With the last screaming and cheering of the day, all of you get off the stage. There is an hour before the meet and greet starts, which gives you time to rest and change out of your sweaty clothes. For this hour you have a pop up shop set up, where your fans can buy your exclusive merch.

Out there in the crowd, there is a person you have no idea is there. It was THE Drew Starkey, one of your favorite actors of all time. You've seen him in movies with minor roles, to go and take on a big role like Rafe Cameron on Outer Banks.

And you are pretty much Drew's favorite singer. He's been listening to your music long before you blew up, in fact he's been listening to you since almost the beginning of your career.

He gets to see you live for the first time today, and he just falls in love with your stage presence. The way you sound even more beautiful live, the way you move around the stage dancing and hyping up everyone in the crowd, he's in love with it all.

And today, he has a big chance of meeting you. He got a meet and greet ticket, and in less than an hour you're about to meet him.

"Awww you're so sweet oh my god!" You say, taking the gift from the fan. She made a fan book for you by collecting messages for you from your fans all around the world though social media.

"I'm so happy you like it!" She says, ecstatically, as you lean in to give her another hug. You both turn around towards the camera to get the picture clicked. After greeting your last goodbyes, the girl leaves the room.

From outside, you hear the guard say, "next!" You walk towards the table set on the side to get yourself a glass of water. Behind your back, Drew has walked inside the room. You turn around to see Drew Starkey standing in front of you. You spit out the water in your mouth in utter shock.

"OH MY GOD!" You yell out loud, making Drew laugh. You rush up to him and give him a big hug. "Wow! It's Drew Starkey in front of me!"

"I'm such a massive fan of you," Drew says with a smile. Your mouth falls wide open. Drew Starkey is a fan of you?

"This is insane because I'm such a massive fan of you."

"WHAT? REALLY?" Drew says out loud, totally not expecting to hear that back. Your excitement matches with his as you nod your head vigorously.

"YES! I've been obsessed with your acting since so long now, every single role you've ever done is simply chef's kisses," you say, doing the chef's kisses gesture after.

"This is sick, come on give me another hug," he says laughing, and you without any hesitation walk up to him and wrap your arms around his torso, while his are around your waist. You hug him tightly, and he hugs you back even tighter. He then starts to sway you both in your position, making you chuckle.

You tilt your head up, resting your chin on his chest and looking in his eyes. In this moment, everything feels so surreal. It feels so... right to be in this position, with his arms holding you this tightly, making you feel so safe, that not a single thing in this world can hurt you now.

"Uh... so sorry to ruin the moment here but we don't have much time left and quite many fans are still left to meet you," the guard says. You and Drew suddenly snap back into reality and spring away from each other.

"Oh... oh yes," you stammer.

"Can we get a picture?" Drew asks you.

"Oh of course!" You say. He hugs from the side and you both look ahead at the camera, both of you grinning widely.

"It was so wonderful meeting you Drew," you smile at him.

"You too," he smiles at you back. Drew walks to the exit door, but before he can leave, he turns around to look at you.

"Will I see you again?"

This causes your lips to upturn in the biggest grin.

"Yes."

Hi, anon! We actually have good information about most songs so far, which is very exciting:

1.The Greatest: This song was leaked, here are the lyrics. And that's what he said about the song for Euphoria Magazine:

“That was specifically written as a tour opener, not necessarily an album opener at the time. Musically, it’s interesting. There’s probably not another song like that on the record. It starts the album with a statement of intent, which I think is important. There’s a certain ambitious level to that.” (September 1st 2022)

Also a quote from his interview for BBC:

Faith In The Future is dedicated to his avid fanbase. The propulsive opening track, The Greatest, is a celebration of their relationship. (September 17th 2022)

2. Written All Over Your Face: We have the lyrics here and here's a quote also from Euphoria Magazine:

After taking on a journey through various sonics, Tomlinson closes Faith In The Future with the melodic and most tender song, “That’s The Way Love Goes.” After playing around with the tracklisting, Tomlinson claims that he “couldn’t get away from that idea,” adding that “you’ve got two options to end the album: you either end with a slap round the face or a little ballad moment.” Detailing a non-sexual love between two best friends, Tomlinson is confident that this is a song fans are going to adore. “I think it’s an interesting story, an interesting visual going through the song. With the way the album is structured, it kind of fits nicely to finish on that message. Tomlinson’s focus on intensity doesn’t extend to every song on Faith In The Future — at least not overtly. While he would have left the listener (hopefully) wanting more with “a wall of sound” on a record’s final track, he approached Faith In The Future’s closer “That’s The Way Love Goes” differently. The song, which was his take on the vulnerable simplicity of the Streets’ “Dry Your Eyes,” was the only track he could end the record on — one about a friend encouraging another friend to get over the fact that he’s not in a relationship anymore. “It's not the fact that you're not sympathizing. The Omori Fanbase and Misunderstanding of Psychosis

This is going to be more ranty than anything else, so I apologize for that. I think it’s important that I also clarify this is coming from my personal opinion, and not everyone thinks the same.

I may as well mention, I have gone through psychosis for two years and have dealt with long term mental illness my entire life; it’s an uphill battle, and it’s something that never truly goes away. Medication is needed to properly maintain the symptoms of psychosis, and I want that to be kept in mind while reading this.

Here we go

For a game that emphasizes how mental health can take hold of and deteriorate the psyche, I’m surprised/somewhat disgusted by how a majority of the omori fanbase characterizes Basil as an obsessive yandere who is nothing but clingy and all smiles.

I also think it’s important to remember that DW Basil is what Sunny/Omori wants him to be, the same way Sunny/Omori creates the rest of his friends to be ‘perfect’ (which is why he keeps killing DW Basil when he steps out of line from that ‘perfect’ and ‘delicate’ persona).

That being said…

The fanbase is able to separate the DW and RW versions of the characters, but for some reason, this is not the case with Basil. Basil is treated as being exactly the same in RW like he is in DW; clingy, obsessive, and childish (when in reality he is fearing for his life and avoiding everyone like the plague—especially Sunny).

But why is that? My only guess can be is that this is another case of people misunderstanding symptoms of psychotic episodes.

When someone is going through psychosis, reality becomes distorted. You are unable to think or act correctly. Every day is waking up in fear, paranoid that something is going to come get you. It becomes difficult to distinguish what is real and what is not real. You don’t trust anyone, and you have the feeling of constantly being watched. Every day is a waking nightmare, and every night is a battle to fall asleep. It’s impossible to run away from your delusions, and they follow you everywhere you go like some festering parasite that only grows stronger over time.

Basil’s mind has clearly deteriorated throughout those four years. It only makes sense his paranoia and delusions became worse over time, eventually evolving into full psychosis; auditory, visual, tactile hallucinations… its made explicitly clear in-game that Basil suffers from all of these.

As represented by Basil’s SOMETHING, he is quite literally being eaten alive by his guilt and paranoia.

Now, as for anyone who has dealt with psychotic breaks, you’ll know that pushing away those thoughts only make them worse. Which brings me to my next point:

Basil is not obsessed with Sunny. He quite literally has no choice but to think about him. I truly believe he tried pushing away any reminders of his trauma, and I imagine during his first year alone, he tried giving up on the idea that Sunny would be there with him so they could have each other’s backs. He most likely tried moving on and living life as normally as he could.

But that’s not how PTSD works.

Basil’s trauma, no matter how hard he tried to push it away, haunted him every day—thus, Sunny haunted him every day. Every day, Basil’s paranoia had been reminding him of what happened, who was there, and what was promised.

This is what leads him into his psychosis, and his haunted perception of Sunny.

When Basil finally sees Sunny for the first time after four years, he’s not happy. He’s more-so nervous than anything else.

Sunny is a reminder of his trauma, and it’s made clear Basil isn’t ready to face him given he never wants to join your party.

(Displaying disoriented speech)

When he finds out that Sunny came out after all these years just to leave again (he didn’t even hear it from Sunny), of course that would trigger a psychotic response; thus, Basil retreats into the bathroom and manically repeats the phrase that’s gotten him through those four horrid, lonely years.

(Repetition of words/rumination)

While hallucinating as Sunny seemingly enters the bathroom to comfort him after all these years, he’s left alone again to be consumed by his paranoia. This goes on for the remainder of the game; Basil actively avoiding the party and staying inside, believing there is no hope left for him or Sunny.

(Foreshadowing suicidal thoughts)

And then his grandma passes.

Something interesting is that every interaction with RW Basil always leads to a fear response from Basil. Even if the incident from four years ago is never brought up, it’s obvious it’s constantly on his mind (again, psychosis consumes your every waking thought).

(he immediately becomes paranoid around Sunny, talking about Mari, unprompted).

And then there’s Basil’s meltdown.

(Hostility)

Some more symptoms of psychosis is sometimes having to deal with bouts of aggressiveness, word repetition, restlessness, and of course, frenzied/incoherent speaking.

When these meltdowns happen, it often reveals innermost thoughts and/problems, but in a more panicked sort of way. With that said…

I believe Basil’s dialogue in this scene reveals how he truly feels about Sunny.

Taking on the responsibility of hiding a horrid truth, all by himself, for four years—the guilt, paranoia, hallucinations getting worse and worse—and then finding out that the only other person who knows about this horrible sin is about to leave you again; but this time, forever. It’s cruel, and I don’t blame Basil for feeling some type of resentment towards Sunny.

(Part of me views Sunny losing his eye as punishment for his sins, but that’s just me).

Conclusion

I guess what I wanted to get across was that I’m sick of seeing people mischaracterize yet another psychotic character as nothing but a creepy yandere. I find it insulting to those who have gone through either short or long term psychosis (including me), and any of those who may still be dealing with psychotic breaks. I really want to see the fanbase do better, especially when this is a game that can be seen as mental health awareness.

I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t horribly saddened by OMORI’s neutral endings. Seeing Basil commit suicide and succumb to his psychosis is scary, and it’s something so many people dealing with mental illness fear every day. It’s a reminder of what could have happened to me had I not gotten the support and help I needed (meds, friends, family).

Afterthoughts

I don’t think Basil hates Sunny. Does that mean They should continue being friends? Well, maybe; exposure response therapy is usually helpful for dealing with things like this, and if Basil were to continue avoiding Sunny like the plague I believe it would only make his mental health worse (also of course Basil shouldn’t have stabbed out Sunny’s eye but my boy was hallucinating throw him a bone).

In reality, I think Basil just wants things to go back to the way they were, just like everyone else does. It’s very clear given the context of the game that Sunny and Basil have a special bond (“a red string of fate”).

If anything, I believe Sunny is more obsessed with Basil than Basil is with him, but that’s a different post for the future.

…and don’t even get me started on how Sunny told the truth then left Basil to pick up the scraps and deal with the aftermath of his friends.

…and no, I still have no idea what is up with Basil getting the idea to hang Mari.

You know as a former member of Vivziepop's cult and yes its a cult not a fandom anymore I am disgusted by a majority of the people in it.

Like someone on the subreddit brought up it being kinda tasteless or fucked that they sold sexy Stella merch in bdsm gear when she's abused Stolas physically. The post was deleted quickly and judging by my experiences in the fandom people were stanning Viv or harassing OP and that has got me thinking.

Why is Stella in bdsm gear? Like Stolas and Blitzo are canonically into it yet you give the abuser that...

Like isn't a bit fucked that instead of choosing the canonical practicioners in your show you choose to put someone who uses pain not to pleasure but to slowly break and hurt someone.

We know Vivziepop has a merch rep so how did that get into production?

I also find it fucked that Vivziepop and crew are attempting to tackle an issue as serious as domestic abuse and do it so poorly by writing Stolas and Stella as bickering children next we see them. Then the staff has the utter gawl to sell merch in general of Stella and the fans buying it up.

Like I understand autograph signings slightly but that's the only merch Stella should have.

Vivziepop's cult loves to claim that they utterly depise Stella and deserves to suffer because she's an abuser so how dare people want nuance or not just a generically evil cartoon villain but the moment she is drawn in a sexy way they start throwing money at that.

Like I just want to know how these people if their friends ask about the character on the pin will explain "Oh this is Stella who's a sexy domestic abuser"

Then again am I surprised when Vivziepop makes merch of a rapist and most of the crew have some weird fascination with Valentino and not in the way that he's their best written villain way more like they are simping over him.

I think a lot of fandoms, especially nowadays, have a lot of genuinely bad people who really need help/therapy but see nothing wrong in what they do or just keep doing that, though they know it ain't okay. That's so frustrating when you can't feel comfortable even in an Internet community. But Viv's "fandom"(I mean exactly these two shows, although Zoophobia also had......not very pleasant people) is surely something........Where'd you find so many blatantly oblivious and blind brown nosers which keep pretending everything's good when there's already tons of red flags from Vivienne? Yeah, that's a rare case. I don't wanna interact with this fandom or even talk about it, tbh. I still watch the show cuz it's fun to see how it manages to be worse with every episode, though sometimes I don't make reviews as many other people do it faster and better and I just have nothing to say(I need to take my jaw from the floor). Regarding Stella - well, I don't know on what principles Viv or her team makes merch with the characters, but aren't all characters being sexualized anyway? They even have merch with Chaz, a guy who, like, died in the same episode. And they keep doing new merch with this jerk. And that's obviously because there are people who simp for him. I don't know if Stella's merch may be an insult to those who practice BDSM, I'm not into it, tbh, and I don't take these things seriously, but I find this just a bland sexualisation. Well, it's "sexy merch", but yeah, Stella's all character is based on being a mean aggressive yelling bitch, and this thing.......it must be a character trait, I guess? Or just a sweet treat for rule34 artists, like most of the stuff Viv does. Again, I don't take all of this seriously, this sexy merch was made to tease and please the simping fans, but there's certainly a part of irony in it. Like, people in this fandom hate Stella so much that they shit on people who simply want her to be a more complex character, and they're........still buying all this stuff. They........enjoy Stella being "hot dommy mommy" and still keep hating her? Ngl, only Viv's fanbase can do that, lol. I've seen this fandom from the start and I can say that many people here always had some weird obsession with Valentino. I even remember some person passive aggressively telling me that "he's just very charismatic and it's your problems if you can't see it". When there were, like........A musical clip and a comic where he just was being an abusive jerk. Yeah, that's a really weird fascination. Also, doesn't one of HH's crew, who is an animator or a director(don't remember correctly), has a rape fetish and has drawn an animatic on their beloved ship Angel/Val? Hella ironic that a show about serious portrayal of trauma and abuse has a crew member(or members) which legit.......find it hot or cute. That's sick af but I guess Viv doesn't care who she hires. Oh, that's definitely not a pit I would like to fall in. I'm not sure there's any hope on Hazbin portraying trauma or mental illnesses properly, but I'll still watch it anyway. a/n: ik I said i wouldn't be able to work on anything until august but i recently watched the miraculous movie and wanted to make a drabble also jake is so cat noir coded i couldn't resist. also this is my first work so please bear with me and thank you for reading! <33

being a superhero with a superhero boyfriend meant you didn't get to spend a whole lot of time together except for when you both were in action.

to make it more difficult, the two of you didn't know each other's identities so you couldn't go on dates like normal people either.

for this reason, you and your partner had decided to spend your nights after rescuing paris together on a random rooftop. oftentimes you would treat yourselves too for a job well done.

you didn't necessarily have to talk, you could simply embrace the comfortable silence with one another.

the practice had easily become a part of your routine and you were glad to share those peaceful moments with him. especially since balancing uni along with your part time job wasn't easy.

cat noir didn't have the easiest personal life either from what you could gather during your conversations.

you were unaware of the fact that he was an idol and one with a fairly huge fanbase at that so, all things considered, it was a given that leisure and peace wouldn't reign in his life.

today was much the same. the sky was dark without a star in sight thanks to air pollution which also made it appear slightly velvety. the two of you were seated on the rooftop of a convenience store this time.

your were slightly sore after all the action and you had no doubt he was too. he'd gotten ice creams for both of you from the building below.

chocolate for you, he had learnt it was your favourite, and strawberry for himself, his favourite. for some reason you'd been surprised when you had first discovered it was the ice cream flavour he liked most.

feeling a nudge on your shoulder, you looked up to see cat noir holding up his spoon containing some of his ice cream. "open up bugaboo" you comply, not before chuckling at his words, as he feeds you. "your turn kitty-cat" you say, a side smile etched on your face, as you do the same.

you guys sit in comfortable silence for a while before you break it, "i kinda missed this." today was the first time you both were hanging out again after defeating a villian in a month and a half.

it wasn't that hawk moth was taking a break, no the akuma attacks were still almost daily, but both of you were busy with your personal lives. you had exams and he had been busy with comeback promotions.

"of course you did, I'm such a paw-sitive presence after all" he shoots you a wink. you roll your eyes in a way that said i'm so done with you, elbowing his side but the rosey tint on your cheeks told a different story. thank god it's nighttime.

"you're a hopeless case d'you know that?" "i'm your hopeless case" god, he was such a flirt.

"i missed you too" he admitted after a moment. causing a soft smile to make its way on your face.

feeling a sudden impulse, you turn your head around and plant a quick kiss on his cheek, right below where his mask ended. he froze in spot, spoon halfway to his mouth.

your head was still facing him and due to the close proximity, you could see his cheeks redden. you were sure yours were in the same state from your sudden burst of courage.

"what's wrong kitty? cat got your tongue?" you swing the bell on his costume once, before facing the city again.

cat noir finally brings the last spoon of his ice cream to his mouth, putting it aside. a beat passes. no response from him. that's odd.

you turn back towards your partner, partially regretting your decision as soon as you do. his face is turned in your direction, now centimetres apart from yours.

before you can turn around again though, his hand reaches your right cheek. the grip isn't too firm, allowing you to still look away if you wish to. his eyes searching yours for any sign of discomfort.

"may i, m'lady?" you lean forward, connecting your lips, there's your answer chaton.

he doesn't waste time, kissing you back almost instantly, as his lips move along yours. it's a soft kiss that causes butterflies to swarm your stomach.

one of your hands finds its way to the back of his neck as the other cups reaches towards his hair. his other hand meets your waist.

he pulls away after a while. a smirk plastered across his purr-fect face.

"what's wrong watermelon? cat got your tongue?" he mocks you with your own statement from earlier. "that was my first kiss" you confess, voice slightly breathless. one of his brows shoots up at that, smirk still there.

"well, was it good?" he receives a side eye for that. "you're insufferable" "I'm hurt m'lady" he places a hand on his chest dramatically "i was just asking the important questions here"

"yeah it was" you mutter in answer to his question. "what was that?" "shut up before your nine lives come down to eight."

"if you must know, my dear bugaboo, it was my first kiss as well" you raise an eyebrow "yes i know it's shocking that someone as cat-astrophically stunning as me hasn't had his first kiss until now," cue an eye roll from you "but i assure you, m'lady, that it was furry good".

i don't know if you answer asks but you're one of the few blogs still consistently posting pjo tv crit and it's been such a relief. with the amount of praise it's gotten i feel so gaslit like am i just being a baseless hater?? but no there's a reason a lot of the people criticizing the show are writers. it's a poorly written show and the more i think about it the more problems i find

like i was thinking about the way the kids in the show just know everything and how boring it is to watch, especially the casino scene, and something hit me

the lotus casino functions perfectly as a metaphor for traits associated with adhd--the need for stimulation and time blindness. anyone would fall for the casino's lure, but especially adhd kids. the fact that the show takes that away is REALLY weird to me, to put it kindly

if i were being less kind? i would say there's grounds to argue that having these characters, who are children with adhd, be impervious to something that is designed to trap people exactly like them is, on some level, erasure of their disabilities. especially since the one character who does get affected by it is the one who doesn't have the same neurodivergencies as the two who don't. the explanation for why percy and annabeth didn't start to forget themselves was such a lazy cop out and i can't believe people ate it up

i don't know what that writers' room has against literal adhd children falling for traps that are designed to trap people, but it's embarrassing for them tbh

i’m so glad to hear it anon!! i’m a little surprised to hear it too tbh, i wasn’t sure if anyone else was still. interested in discussing it? it seems like the pjo/atla fanbase overlap means most people have moved onto to the live action atla show. and while i am an atla fan, i didn’t grow up with the show the same way i grew up with the pjo books, so based on what we’d already seen/heard of the natla show before it even released + my utter disappointment and heartbreak regarding the pjo show, i decided to spare myself the watch. i would rather keep my memories of the original show untainted; what i have seen of the show resonates with people’s criticisms of the writing (and as someone who has done costuming work. one look is all you need to understand THAT criticism lmfao).

but i’m honestly… surprised? the pjo show did not get the same level of criticism as the natla show? it’s not like pjo is not also very popular with that same generation, sure, atla being a show perhaps made it more appealing and accessible to more kids, etc etc, sure. but from the fan bases themselves, size aside? proportionately? the pjo fandom is FULL of show defenders just blatantly ignoring the show’s major foundational issues if not just outright parading them around as successes, meanwhile the critics are in the minority. compare that with what i’ve seen where the complete opposite is true of the atla fandom, it’s weird!! and especially jarring to me bc it seemed pretty clear to everyone in the atla fandom the show had Issues, meanwhile the pjo fandom heard the promise from rick riordan’s very own mouth this show is going to be faithful to the series’ spirit. it’s so weird to see the wildly different responses to what i think are prolly equally bad reboot shows, with a fandom of similar demographics (clearly not the SAME demographics or the response would prolly be more aligned but you get my point). so i agree anon, i do feel a little gaslit by the pjo fandom, and watching the atla fandom’s very reasonable response to the natla show is like. whiplash. another sign you and i are not losing it lmao

as for the lotus casino, this is an excellent point! i don’t even think it can be called unkind to point out how this episode is a symptom of the show’s overall disability erasure. i would say it’s unkind of the show to erase adhd and dyslexia representation. in fact, because of the explicit promise by its creator to see that representation, i would go as far as to call it cruel to then erase it. if anything, based on rick’s promises to add more representation, i was hoping for elements like autistic annabeth confirmation, since when pjo was first written, it was based off rick’s son and his friends who were all ND, and at the time it wasn’t thought to be possible to be AuDHD, but likely some of those kids probably were (and that then made its way into the books in characters like annabeth!). that would have been the perfect opportunity to add something with the foresight of modern times, but instead we got… absolutely no disability rep from the show aside from a few short lines of dialogue as a lame-ass bone-toss to the book fans.

the pjo show’s biggest crime is its lack of spirit of the original book series, and that book series cradled myself and every other ND child or child in an abusive situation who read it. it offered us a mother who never got angry with us when we showed “difficult” symptoms. it offered us camp half-blood, the idea of a place, a home, where people like us were not just accepted, but thrived. it offered us a new world. it offered us a friend in percy jackson. i do not feel the show truly offers anything substantial. it only takes.

The soft sound of breathing is the first thing you hear in the morning as the golden rays of sunlight washes in through the sheer curtains. Jin's choice obviously. If you had it your way, you'd never be bothered by the bright sun so early in the morning. But the strong chest you're pressed against helps balance out the thoughts of complaining.

With a slight stretch, you yawn and grip on to your boyfriend's shirt some more, as if not ready to let him go before it sinks in. Today's Sunday. You can't help but gasp in pure delight, causing the body basically under you to shift at the noise. You cover your mouth bashfully and smile to yourself. Sunday. A day off. 'Finally!' You think to yourself.

It'd been awhile since your boyfriend of 2 years had a day off. After coming back from the military, Jin went right back to working and doing interviewers. You understood why though. ARMY needed to see he was still okay, still the same old Jin, still THEIR same old Jin.

Sharing your boyfriend with a global fanbase definitely had its downfalls, but also, it's perks. For one, those fans sure knew how to edit him...

You're pulled from your thoughts by a soft and low groan rumbling from the chest under your head. "Mm.." Jin murmurs, still half asleep.

"Arise, Frankenstein..." You tease soft and he lets out an airy chuckle.

"You're so... weird..." He mutters as he rubs his face, eyes still closed. His morning voice is a bit rough and deep. You ignore the flutter in your stomach and giggle a bit. "You like it." You state confidently as you sit up some more and look down at the 5-foot 10, Korean man in your bed.

He stretches and sighs happily as his eyes wonder to the clock on your nightstand. "It's Sunday." You say, a humorously look on your face as you watch him expectingly.

Just as you figured, the 30-year-old's face breaks into an excited smile and bright eyes full of joy. In one quick motion, he snakes his arms around your waist and pulls you back on top of him. You laugh in surprise and swat at his chest lightly.

"No! No, no more sleep!" You laugh as you fight playfully against his grip.

"Mm... But... Day off..." He complains and you laugh. "Yes, caveman, day off. But we still have things to do today. I wanna go to the store today. I found this new dish on TikTok-" Jin cuts you off with a playful groan.

"This is gonna be like that sushi-" You cut him off this time around. "It won't be like the sushi!" You say fast, practically whining at the memory of the 'sushi-incident' that took place over two months ago. Of course, a foodie like Jin would never let you live it down. Let's just say there's a reason he's the cook of the house.

"Here. I'm gonna brush my teeth, and you're gonna check out the video." You say as you reach for your phone and hand it over without a second thought. You and Jin were always open when it came to switching phones. Neither of you had anything to hide.

You hop off the bed and practically skip to the bathroom, pleased with the mental plans of today. Breakfast, shopping, coming home to cook together. Today would be perfect.

Little did you know, giving Jin access to your phone meant giving him access to your little TikTok stash of... well... him. As Jin lays in bed, he scrolls through edit after edit of himself, that you had liked and saved. Some of those edits even had comments from you. Unapologetic comments that is. This was your personal account after all, so you had no real filter on here. On this page, you were just one of the many ARMY members.

He smirks to himself as he sees firsthand, what exactly you find so attractive about him. He begins making his own mental list of the day.

During breakfast, Jin makes a point of tapping his slender fingers along the tabletop. At first, you pay it no mind, but at a certain point, you begin to take notice of the way he bites his lower lip lightly or how he strokes his fingers along the tabletop as he softly speaks in his low voice about the dish you were planning to make today.

You take notice of the, now grown out, jet black hair that was a bit shaggy and slightly covering his eyes, the way he rubbed his chin as he eyes you. His deep, dark eyes only focused on you, but when they trail to your lips, you stammer a bit, and that damn smirk comes out. He chuckles softly.

"What?" He whispers innocently, tilting his head slightly to the side as he squints at you, but that damn smirk shows he knows what he's doing. "Uh... Nothing. Nothing." You try as you shake your head. He hums softly and licks his lips again, slowly this time around.

"I was just saying..." You try speaking again as Jin reaches over to scoop up some of the whip cream you had on your waffles. He brings it to his lips and softly sucks it off, keeping eye contact with you the entire time. You hum softly and Jin laughs gently. "Too easy..." He smiles at you, and you huff. You avert your eyes as you grab your glass of water to drink, knowing one thing for sure: You were in for it...

You stand in front of the shelves of pasta, trying to remember which one the TikToker said to use when you feel an arm wrap around you from behind. Jin stands next to you. "Decided which one?" He asks as you sigh deeply. "Uh... Let's just go with that one." You say as you go to grab it only to be stopped by Jin.

"I got it." He says and moves his arm slowly down your body before gripping your hip to hold you closer to his tall and strong frame, using his other hand to grab the pasta box. You feel so small pressed against him like this, and the slight... *ache* is only made worse when he slowly leans in towards your ear and whispers: "Mm... Too easy..."

You huff playfully and lightly push him away. "Not funny!" You fuss as he starts laughing at you, extremely proud of himself and the power he had over you.

He gives your butt a quick swat and it makes you jump, hitting him more as he laughs happily. "Come on, come on..." He snickers as you huff and walk off to the next aisle.

"And next, you throw in the cheese, and you stir till it melts." You say as Jin follows your words with slight hesitation on his face.

"Baby... I don't know if it should look like that..." Jin laughs and you pout. "I mean... Maybe it needs more time, ya know." You defend and he chuckles quietly and agrees, always one to encourage you.

As you take over the stirring, Jin stretches a bit and his t-shirt rises only slightly, but it's enough to show off his v-line that dips into those damn grey sweatpants he'd changed into.

You focus hard on the pot in front of you only to feel trapped by him placing his hands on either side of you. He grips the countertop slowly so you can see the veins in his hands as he tightens his grip.

He nuzzles into your neck slightly and you feel his breath as his lips graze over your pulse point. "You're cute when you focus..." He teases and you blush hard. He moves closer and places his hands firmly on your hips.

"Jin..." You mutter as his fingers start to slide into your front pockets before digging into your thighs to pull you back on to him. "What? You don't... want me to hold you in my 'big, strong' arms?" He taunts in your ear and you feel your face heat up at the question.

"W-What... Do you-" He cuts you off with a chuckle. "Playing dumb? You just commented that on an edit of my arms yesterday." He taunts and you stop stirring and gasp as you cover your face instantly. Jin bursts out laughing at your reaction, and you turn to him.

"Not funny!" You try as he holds you tight to him by your waist. "I don't know. It's a little funny..." He laughs before kissing along your cheek as you cover your face with your hands once again.

"I... I just... liked seeing my boyfriend!" You defend and Jin lifts your chin. "And I like flustering my girlfriend." He says back before softly kissing you.

You act uninterested in the kiss at first and he laughs at you pouting and refusing to kiss him. He starts kissing all over your face and that's enough to break you. You give in and kiss back, holding him close.

He picks you up in his arms and places you on the countertop, deepening the kiss which makes your stomach heat up only a bit as you play with his hair at the nape of his neck. As he moves to kiss along your neck, the smell of burnt cheese begins to fill the air.

"Jin..." You gasp in surprise. "Mm... I love when you say my nam-" You cut him off. "No! Jin! The food!" You squeal as you push him away. He gasps in alarm and turns off the stove as you groan at the lumpy mess of cheese and pasta.

Jin stiffens his laugh as you groan. "It's... like the sushi-" You cut Jin off. "It's not like the sushi incident!" You fuss fast and Jin chuckles, moving to hold you. You pout and nuzzle into his chest.

"Want me to order some Jeyuk Bokkeum?" He asks to try and cheer you up, knowing it's your favorite. You grumble slightly. "Hm? That a yes?" He chuckles softly. You nod as you grumble some more. He laughs and tilts your chin to look at him. "Will do." He nods certainly and pecks your lips. "So easy..." He taunts before moving away.

"You little..." You hop off the countertop as he laughs loudly and runs off from you as you chase after him. "Get back here!" You laugh.

i’m incredibly pleased with that melody nosurname video. i’m a gringo from the united states myself, and it was nice to find somebody else like me genuinely adoring the series whilst understanding the cultural impact it had at the time and continues to have in chile and other parts of latin america. melody managed to mostly be in the same shoes i am and also detailed its history and her thoughts in a way i don’t have the patience or resources (as in.. good editing and a microphone, lol). i thank her immensely for that, and i’m sure it’s at the very least interesting for the vast majority of you to see this perspective and the true adoration poured into it, despite some very obvious differences.

having been into this show for around two years now, most fans i’ve met have been genuinely surprised that somebody like me could actually know about this series. my reply to this is just a simple “well, anything can happen”, but this video has made it all the more probable. now maybe one day, it won’t be as big of a surprise, as long as the new crowds treat it the way it deserves (i know the horrors of american fanbases… trust me). despite many reasonably being surprised, however, every fan i have connected with has been very kind, and i thank everyone i’ve ever connected with over this show for that.

i really don’t think anyone will take the time to read this, but just know how grateful i am to have found this series over all. i don’t want to turn this into something sappy (even if i probably hit that mark ages ago), but it’s genuinely become one of my favorite shows and most prominent interests. it never fails to provide me with at least a bit of happiness when i’m upset, and i hope this development only attracts positive attention from those willing to dive deeper as i did.

oh boy the fan reaction to the news is making me nervous but the unfortunate part to this is that i'm mostly fine with it djdjjsjsjsjs

i think there is a discussion of whether it's smart to paywall all future content and essentially exclude all the fans who don't have the means to pay. but at the same time i've always believed that watcher has been making quality, tv-worthy content (with heart!) since its creation. that, combined with the fact that youtubers don't owe you anything no matter how entitled you feel to it honestly justifies this switch to me.

again i think the switch is justified but i don't think it's too smart. they're ostracizing a HUGE portion of their fanbase with this move. making the fans go cold turkey like this was almost bound to generate a net negative response. i'm worried bc i still very much believe in watcher, their content, and the passion they put behind their projects, and personally i am willing to pay for their content at this point. but i suspect that that is not the same for many viewers if not most, and i wouldn't be surprised at all if this is smthn they never fully come back from.

Given how viv probably knows Ashely n Micheal are on the Lackadaisy team it wouldn't surprise me if that was the sole reason for the bs terf accusations. Which feels especially heinous cause she most likely also knows that they both work with and are friends(?) With goose, a trans woman.

Also super ironic cause ive seen terf fans of viv. Almost feels more like a mix of projection of her own transphobia and exaggerating that projection to the extreme that would get the most traction on twitter.

Also i keep thinking back to the one terf i saw in tags a year ago who unironically went "sallie is trans? Oh well its hell" (iirc) when an anon tried to drill her for inconsistencies despite the blatant and obvious horn that youd think a "we can always tell" crowd bigot would notice and acting like she is someone that fits in with the fandom. Especially with how many hb pfps will say some of the most transphobic garbage and misgender like crazy its making me think there may be be a large terf following the viv has. Which if im right just makes the projection even grosser because if anything shes directing all the terfs that follow her to the lackadaisy just because she cant handle admitting fault.

Also the fact that viv justifies her shit female characters with "this is for the the boys☺" but according to rumours wants to give sallie may a couple eps instead of any other female character. It just. Kind of smells of something to me, like viv is just a regular lying two-faced transphobe.

Makes me wonder if she has terfs on her team-not to the levels of the lackadaisy accusations she made ofc. Especially since one of the trans imps in the mammon ep was a animators impsona and i know kittensneeze (trans masc lesbian) works/ed for spindlehorse at some point-just 2 examples off the top of my head. Just, her transphobia. The transphobia and literal terfs in her audience. All of that just. Wouldnt surprise me if there are a couple workers that she *knows* are terfs and pretends theres no issue with her knowingly hiring terfs purely because she has so many trans workers that she feels it balances it out.

idk maybe there are no terfs on spindle staff but the amount of literal terfs and transphobic pieces of shit in the fanbase has me thinking.

I think Vivzie's fandom is a breeding ground for the same brand of transphobia Vivzie herself subscribes to -- "Trans people are super awesome and valid and worthy of respect until they do something I don't like, and then all bets are off."

They'd never call themselves terfs or transphobes, a lot of them have twitter bios letting everyone know how progressive they are, but if you don't toe the line, you're a crazy woman or an ugly man.

Yuichi Usagi is [SURNAME] [given name]

lol I've written abt it before going into more specifics & making theories, but this post is just to clear it up again as a general ref for newer fans reading old or new posts abt it and finding themself confused... edit3(15.1): rightfully so! if you've ever watched more than 5 anime or just read some manga, you might recognize that Yuichi is most commonly a given name in Japan. Even viewers familiar with japanese would have made the same assumption. But the show itself uses it as a first name, so it becomes confusing. After jan 6th we found the behind-the-scenes lore for that too.

- clearest tell in the show itself that Usagi is his first name - his auntie calls him Usagi. What auntie calls their sole nephew or close family member by their family name? ... which would have to be her own family name then too...???

Secondly. He introduces himself as Usagi the more he's in the city. First as Yuichi Usagi, but then after a few chases, he gives up and introduces himself to Kitsune as "Usagi"in the 1st episode. boy wants to be known as Usagi haha.

edit 2 (8.1.2024): as of 6.01 we have official confirmation that this is fact + a little backstory! Yuichi is the boy's surname

the whole show, all the other characters use japanese naming convention - e.g. Gen introduces himself as Murakami Gennosuke to the Bat Squadron. it seems the other younger characters call each other by given name basis because they're either all around the same age or don't feel like using family names for each other. Often characters don't have family names because they're orphans (Chizu, Kitsune, Hana). Or it's the only name they go by in general (Tetsujin, Lady Fuwa).

it's that simple! you can headcanon whatever but at least know the show itself has named him this way.

I've already written about this b4 too but Yuichi can very rarely be a family name (apparently). there might be other reasons the show crew gave him Yuichi as a family name, but if that doesn't cut it, you can always adopt my theory that he has a rare two given names.

But yeah, the show makes it clear that Usagi is his first name. It's a spinoff based on Usagi Yojimbo and some of its stories and ideas, and made by fans of the comic and Stan's work. They decided to give him this name, for whatever reasons, and it's his name used in the show. There's too much much work in the show itself for them to give him a random name either, "just because they're ignorant" or even just bc they didn't research. They clearly did or the show wouldn't have some surprising elements to it as a spinoff or as a past+future combo of japanese aesthetics.

Him and the comics' original Usagi, Miyamoto Usagi can share a first name. I know it looks confusing coming from other shows where evryone has specific names. I know it's just generally confusing as a tmnt fan... but their names and tags can co-exist as-is. maybe i don't get out enough into other shows but I've never seen a fanbase stretch themselves so into a pretzel over characters sharing their first name. also Miyamoto Usagi is based on a famous historical samurai, more precisely - Miyamoto Musashi. His movie depiction was what inspired Stan Sakai in the 80s... ppl in real life share first and last names very often so it just doesn't bother me personally that they share one name, but not their family name. So I don't get anymore why ppl are upset that his name is a combo of two first names... I believe there's also a irl children's book author named Usagi Yuichi (maybe pseudonyms being animal names is more common in japan?idk) so I wonder if the crew knew about that 🤔

clearing this up again bc every time I see someone say smth about this show and it's some misunderstanding on top of a misconception, I just wanna make a simple chart to explain things lol. but i don't know if ppl would care even. I know ppl sorta dislike this show or don't care abt it anyways. but then... why talk about it? why share info like a fan who knows or cares about it... and then it's false info... so idk, if they're not a fan, don't take them at face value, but even if they're a fan, it's easy to share info without a source and have others think it's real. Be ready for info to change or your first impressions to break. I've mostly only theorised or drawn from the show itself so far, but even things I say might change if other evidence is provided. So... lol lets all just read into this show calmly I guess.

edit (7.1.2024): lol another thing to add that I didn't think about: there's a 1000 years between the generations of Miyamoto Usagi and Yuichi Usagi. so them not having the same surname would be considered quite normal (and so far, no evidence to conclusively say that M! Usagi is a grandpa... the scene between Usagi and his auntie in the evening in ep 1 also seems to allude that there are many generations between the og era and the future era and that Usagi's auntie is speaking of her own direct great grandfather and Miyamoto Usagi separately...
