Reunion
Pairings: Daryl Dixon x teen!reader, Tyreese Williams x teen!reader, Carol Peletier x teen!reader, Judith Grimes x teen!reader (all platonic obviously)
Requested by Anonymous: when the prison fell you and Daryl got separated, this is how you meet up, based on this request
Warnings: mention of blood, fighting, mention killing walkers/zombies, killing people, Daryl hug (yes that’s a warning), knives, guns, mention of killing kids, Terminus, hopefully if you read this you’ve seen the episode and knows what it includes, but ya know typical twd stuff.
A/N did I accidentally write this way longer than I intended yes, yes, I did, now don’t get me wrong the moment where Tyreese defends Judith is iconic but for the sake of this fic I changed it up, kinda wanna make another part
For you who wants to know the episode is season 5 episode 1
Anyway I hope you enjoy this <3
Tumblr media
Judith giggled happily in your arms as you walked on the edge of the railway. You could’ve once imagined all kinds of trains going up and down the tracks as they blew past the trees, but now you couldn’t actually remember much about trains, you had the idea of them but not much details (and if a train were to come right now that would’ve been a miracle).
Tyreese walked a few steps behind you, with Carol in the front, as she led your group of four forward. She came to a stop when a sign that states “TERMINUS” showed up once more. It was your headed path, the sanctuary called Terminus. You personally didn’t trust it, not after the Governor, but you had to find Daryl and the rest of the group. You knew that if any of them were still alive they would’ve gone to Terminus after finding the railway. Which all of them had probably done. Along with finding Daryl you also had to get Tyreese and Judith to safety. Tyreese wasn’t fit to live on the road at the moment, he refused to kill anything that came your way leaving you and Carol to kill stray walkers, or animals for food. Judith, well, she was a baby and sometimes could be screaming all day, she was mostly quiet but the times she did cry was the times walkers got attracted. A baby was no way near fit to be on the road but here you were all of you somehow still alive (except for Lizzie and Mika Samuels, but there was no loss for you over Lizzie that’s for sure).
“We’re close” Carol stated as she saw the sign. “I’m gonna get you all there, make sure you’re safe, but I’m not gonna stay” She saw your face morph into disappointment as you nodded your head, a sad smile on your face. You’d missed her while she was gone and now she would be leaving again, and you didn’t like it, not one bit and you knew Daryl would be sad over it too which didn’t help the matter.
As you heard the rustle of leaves behind you in the forest, you all turned around to see two walkers stalk forward in your direction. Tyreese motioned with his hands to take Judith from you. Judith was carefully switched over to Tyreese and both you and Carol went forward to the walkers. Both of you killed them quickly only to notice the herd that was about to come out of the forest. Carol whispered to Tyreese that more were coming, and so all of you went into the opposite side of the railway. You hid in the forest until the walkers got distracted by shots firing not too far away from all of you.
Tyreese looked worriedly at you as he started to talk. “That gunfire it could’ve been from Terminus”
“Someone was attacking them, or they were attacking someone” Carol responded
“Do we want to find out?”
This time you involved yourself in the conversation, as you believed that you did indeed need to find out. “Yeah, we need to find out, If the others are there they might need help”
With that, and Carol's instruction of walking another track that would get you there as well you all started to walk once more, this time in need to find out the truth.
Your next stop had been outside a small worn out cabin, but it wasn’t the cabin that got your attention. What got your solely attention as you hid in the forest with your companions was the man that talked in a walkie-talkie. He was putting up a bunch of fireworks, no doubt to lead the herd of walkers away from Terminus. You could faintly hear him mention a woman with a sword, and you stopped Carol from going forward. As you continued to listen you heard him mention a kid with a hat and that was all you needed to go on. You didn’t think there were that many women with a sword and kid with a hat together nearby at the same time, so it didn’t take much to know that they were talking about Michonne and Carl. Nor did it take long to realize they had done something to your group, thereby also Daryl. Especially when he mentioned bleeding the kid out.
Carol slowly started to creep up behind the man and you followed not far behind. Tyreese more hesitant but still following. She put her gun toward his head, the young man froze and put his hands up still holding the two way radio. “Keep your finger off the button and drop it”
“Listen, ya’ll don’t have to do this. Whatever you want, we got a place where everyone’s welcome”
“Shut up man” it was what all three of you were thinking but Tyreese was the one to say it.
“Okay”
“We’re friends of the chick with the sword and the kid in the hat” Carol pressed the gun against his head forward, making the man lean forward as the gun touched his head.
It didn’t take long for you and Carol to tie him up and drag him (not so carefully) into the cabin leaning him against one of the walls. Throughout the whole ordeal the man continued to tell the three of you that you didn’t have to do this, that you could all come up with a deal, but he had no luck there.
As Carol made herself ready to scout Terminus out to see what was happening Tyreese continued to hold Judith in a protective embrace. You however had been asking the man questions, finding out that ever since the first questions he had been lying. He told you he only had Carl and Michonne, that they had both attacked them out of nowhere, that they were just protecting themselves. But none of you believed him. Not with the things you heard him talk about before you confronted him.
You would of followed Carol to Terminus had it not been for your will to protect Judith and Tyreese. As much as you loved Tyreese he wasn’t in his right mind. So you stayed to help if anything bad were to happen, to walkers coming your way or your prisoner getting free somehow, it didn’t matter you were there to protect your family. You only hoped Carol wouldn’t need any help.
Talking about your prisoner he was even more shatty when Carol left. Apparently a teenager, a baby and a man who he could clearly see wasn’t going to kill him was no threat to him. It was his undoing in the end. He underestimated you both and it showed in the way he talked to you and Tyreese as you sat by Judith, who’d you made a makeshift bed to.
“She got a name?… Hey, she got a name?”
“No” you answered at the same time Tyreese answered “Judith” you glared at Tyreese as he told the stranger her name, you didn’t want to give him any information, you never knew if it would backfire.
“She your daughter or something?”
“She’s a friend”
“Huh, I don’t have any friends… I mean I know people. They’re just assholes I stay alive with. The other one your friend, the woman” the younger man nodded towards the door that was now closed. Tyreese slowly looked away at the comment being conflicted about his answer. So instead you answered.
“Yes”
The man nodded and his voice that had now started to annoy you filled the room once more. “I used to have them… used to watch football on Sundays. Went to church” he let out a small laugh as if the thought of it was unbelievable. “I know, I did, but I can’t picture it anymore… it’s funny how you don’t even notice the time go by, horrible shit just stacks up day after day, you get used to it”
Tyreese turned his attention towards the man and spoke with distaste laced in his voice. “I haven’t gotten used to it”
"Of course you haven’t, you’re the kind of guy who saves babies, it’s kinda like saving an anchor, when you’re stuck on a boat-“ you had by know decided to drown out his voice as he tried to make justiciable to let him go.
Your thoughts got filled with Daryl like they had for the most time since the prison fell. You missed him. He always looked out for you. Ever since you met you were drawn to each other. Daryl used to pretend he hated you, especially when Merle was around he couldn’t have his brother think he was soft. However everyone knew he had always secretly looked out for you ever since he met you he’d felt the need to protect you. It came to the point that whenever you wanted to go on a run to get new supplies or do anything really you’d always ask Daryl. You had never spoken about it to each other but there was a silent agreement between everyone even you and Daryl that you were his kid and he your father. It might not be by blood but it was how it had come to be. Everytime something happened to you if you got hurt or if you were sad they’d always notify Daryl, but most of the time he already knew and would be with you to try and cheer you up in his own moody way. When you’d been out on the road before you found the prison you’d always sleep next to each other making sure the other one was safe. Even in the prison your cells were next to each other. He always looked out for you. He taught you how to hunt, he taught you how to use his crossbow, and to fight people to be able to protect yourself. Like Judith was “little asskicker”, you were the “big asskicker”. You couldn’t help but to miss him and the thought of him being hurt from the people in Terminus made your stomach hurt. You didn’t really want to voice your thoughts but you needed the reassurance and Tyreese was the only one who knew who Daryl was and could give reassurance. So against the warnings your mind gave you, you voiced your concerns.
“Do you think Daryl’s okay?” Your voice came out quieter than you expected as your mind filled with more scenarios in which Daryl had gotten hurt in.
Tyreese turned from Judith to look at you. He tried to give a reassuring look on his face as he answered. “I’m sure he’s fine Y/N”
”So Daryl’s your dad, maybe boyfriend” he continued to gues what Daryl was as you made no indication of actually giving anything away to him. After a while he stopped, he wouldn’t get anywhere with you, but he was still confident that if he talked enough to Tyreese would let him go.
“See, you’re a good guy, saving babies and teenagers.
“You have no idea about the things I’ve done”
“You’re a good guy, that’s why you gonna die today, it’s why the baby is going to die, why the Y/N is going to die” both you and Tyreese stood up taking an intimidating step towards the man, your knife pointed at him. “Or… you can get in that car, get out of here, keep on being lucky.”
“You think you’re gonna kill me?”
The man turned his sole attention to Tyreese as he answered him. “Why haven’t you killed me? How does having me alive help you? Why the hell are you even talking to me? Take the kids, take the car and go, I don’t want to do this today”
“For your information we could always use you to get more information or w e could kill you know, like you said we have-“ you got cut off by an explosion going off. Tyreese rushed to the window to see what was happening and saw the smoke over the forest.
“Is that Terminus?” The man moved forward as if trying to see out through the window but he had no luck in that department as he slouched back towards the wall.
“Yeah, probably”
“Maybe you’re gonna win this, maybe your friend, I mean maybe that woman just got capped, maybe I’m gonna be the one who gets capped when she comes back”
“Nobody’s got to die today”
“Man if you believe that… the it’s definitely gonna be you and the kids, even if the place is burning to the ground”
“Man maybe you can shut up and stop talking before I kill you myself” the man took his eyes of Tyreese to look at you as you had your knife pointed at him an annoyed look on your face. He didn’t believe for a moment that a teenager would be able to kill him, nor win in a fight against him. He had a way to high ego to think that you would be able to do any harm to him, he underestimated both you and Tyreese and when he heard as well as saw Tyreese look out at the walkers coming toward the cabin he moved quickly and soon enough his hands went to hold Judith in a hold that would be easy to break her neck.
He told you both to drop your weapons and you both did so not wanting him to hurt Judith. As he saw the walkers claw at the windows he looked towards Tyreese telling him to go outside. As Tyreese went outside he went over to you and bound your hands together with some spare rope just like you had done to him earlier. He made sure the knot would hold before he went I’ve r towards the wallow-talkie and tried to connect to the woman (apparently named Cynthia) on the other side.
While he did all that you tried to desperately tie up the knot that held the rope around your wrist together. Right as you were able to get rid of the rope around your wrist (thankful Daryl taught you how to do it) the noise from outside stopped. It became deathly quiet and the man looked towards were the last pounding against the walls had been. He took out his knife and was about to kill Judith when you quietly and quickly grabbed the knife that was laying right were you left it beside you on the floor and you ran over to the man. You saw red as you knocked him over, he had threatened to kill Judith and Tyreese. Threatened your sister and one of your closest friends. You knocked him towards the floor and your hand went into the air as you threw it down onto him repeatedly stabbing the knife in your hand into him. even after he was clearly dead.
Tyreese had to carefully walk over to you as he took the knife away from you. He told you that the man couldn’t hurt them anymore nor the walkers, everything would be okay. You appreciated his comfort as you hyperventilated for a few minutes over the fact that you’d just killed a human. You’d killed walkers before but never a human being. In your mind it was justified as he was about to kill all of you anyway, but you still felt like you’d lost something inside of you.
It was a while later when you glanced out of the window and saw Carol as she walked towards the cabin, Rick not that far behind. You broke out in a relieve laugh as a smile spread briefly over you lips, this made Tyreese glance out towards where you were looking. You booth scurried to get everything as you both wanted to leave the cabin not being comfortable to stay inside any longer than you needed to.
As both you and Tyreese stepped out of the barn you glanced at the people led by Carol. Your eyes scanned the crowd looking for one person in particular.
Daryl stared at you in disbelief he couldn’t believe you were actually alive, he’d seen you get shot, and without medical attention he guessed you’d died. He hadn’t wanted to keep hoping in case he would someday find your corpse rotting away (either as a walker or actually dead).
Daryl took in your bloodied state, you’d no doubt had to fight. Dirt and blood covered most of your clothes, and your face had a few cuts covered in dried blood. Your once white shirt was miss colored and your jeans had been ripped in some places, your jacket had blood stains all over it. Daryl could only guess what you’d gone through to end up looking like that (he didn’t even look that bad). He didn’t like all the blood covering you, he didn’t like not knowing what had happened, he didn’t like being away from you, he needed to protect you, he’d lost Beth to a couple of strangers, he wouldn’t lose you too.
When your eyes finally found Daryl, you had a soft smile on your face as you saw him visibly relax at your eye contact. While Rick and Carl ran towards Judith in Tyreese’s arms, Daryl stumbled forward towards you, dropping his crossbow to the ground. You met him halfway and he engelfulled you in a tight hug. You’d never know nor would anyone else but Daryl let a few tears fall in relief as he hugged you tightly knowing you were still alive, actually alive. As he felt you wrap your arms around him he felt you hug him just as tight, the comforting sensation you both brought each other was all you needed to ground each other and know that either of you were dreaming, this was real and both of you were okay.
As Daryl heard you sniffle he realized you were crying and he hugged you even tighter, taking one hand to your head and petting it softly — not knowing fully how to comfort someone, even now, having comforted you all those times before he still was unsure if he did it right. However he did know that you were crying from relief, because he did the same thing. You had your father back and he had his kid back and knowing that, you both knew that everything would be okay in the end. You were yet to be bested by someone when together, even when apart you always won, always found your way to back to each other. You would beat this world together and that was all that you needed to know, and the fact that neither of you were planning on leaving soon.

“A certain envoy, arriving from Calabria, announced that Abbot Robert of S. Eufemia had brought his sister Judith—a granddaughter of the duke of Normandy—from Normandy to Calabria so that Roger could marry her. Hearing this, Roger was elated because he had desired her for a long time, for she was beautiful and of excellent parentage. So Roger returned to Calabria as quickly as possible and rushed to meet the long-desired young woman.”
Goffredo Malaterra, The Deeds Of Count Roger Of Calabria And Sicily And Of His Brother Duke Robert Guiscard, p.95
Judith was born around 1040 in Normandy as the daughter of nobleman Guillaume d'Évreux, and his wife Hawise, daughter of wealthy baron Giroie, Lord of Échaffour, and previously widow of nobleman Robert I de Grandmesnil. Guillaume was the third and youngest son of Robert II, Archbishop of Rouen and Count of Évreux, and thus first cousin of Robert I of Normandy, father of William the Conqueror, Duke of Normandy.
We know that Judith spent her earlier life in the Benedictine convent of Saint Wandrille, together with her sister Emma (it’s unclear whether this girl was born out Hawise’s first marriage - thus making her an older half sister - or was Judith’s younger full sister) and under the guardianship of her half-brother Robert de Grandmesnil, Abbot of Saint-Evroul-sur-Ouche. According to English chronicler Orderic Vitalis, it is in this period that Judith caught the eye of Roger d'Hauteville, youngest son of a minor Norman nobleman, Trancred d’Hauteville.
Following a fight with Duke William, around 1060, Robert de Grandmesnil had to leave Normandy, seeking refuge in Southern Italy, where he became abbot of the newly founded Abbey of St. Euphemia in Calabria, with the blessing of fellow countryman, Robert Guiscard d’Hauteville.
Both Judith and Emma decided to follow their brother, leaving the convent and settling in Southern Italy. Once he was told Judith was in Calabria, Roger caught up with her and (according to the sources) married the young lady on the spot, right after meeting her,  in San Martino in Val di Saline on Christmas 1061 (“Coming to the Saline Valley at S. Martino, he escorted the legitimately betrothed young woman to Mileto with a great gathering of musicians and celebrated holy matrimony there.” in Goffredo Malaterra, The Deeds Of Count Roger Of Calabria And Sicily And Of His Brother Duke Robert Guiscard, p.95). The once unappealing suitor (a cadet son from a relatively humble family) had, in the meantime, become an accomplished fighter from a now very promising and powerful family, the ideal husband. As for Judith’s sister, Emma, she would marry an unnamed comrade of her brother-in-law.
Right after marrying his sweetheart, Roger had to momentarily leave her, headed for Sicily, where he was busy chasing out the Muslims emirs which had ruled over the Island since the first half of X century. The youngest Hauteville returned to his wife shortly after, at the beginning of 1062, having conquered the area around Messina of Sicilian territory (“She rejoiced at his homecoming, having longed for him and having been so concerned for his well-being.” in Goffredo Malaterra, The Deeds etc, p.95)
What had propelled Roger to return to Calabria were some disagreements with his older brother, Robert Guiscard. Roger lamented to having obtained only the city of Mileto as part of his effort to conquer Southern Italy, despite his brother had promised him half of Calabria. Roger wanted to provide his wife of a dowry worthy of a lady born in an illustrious family, such as Judith had, but Robert Guiscard had proved to be quite stingy in terms of land distribution.
When put before the threat of an armed clash between the two, Robert was convinced to finally comply and keep his promise and divided Calabria’s territory with his younger brother. It was around summer 1062 and Roger was now free to return to Sicily, but, this time, he brought his wife with him (“He then returned to Sicily with three hundred men to wage war, taking with him his young wife, even though she was timid and resisted as much as she dared to.” in Goffredo Malaterra, The Deeds etc, p.102). The couple settled in Troina and the Hauteville benefited a lot from the closeness and support of such a devoted bride, especially since his stand in Sicily wasn’t all too steady. Taking advantage of the fact that, at some point, Roger had left his wife with a small garrison, the Greek citizens of Troina had attempted to attack the soldiers and kidnap Judith but to no avail.
Once he was informed of the failed coup and the fact that the Saracens intended to profit from the confusion and Roger’s absence, the Hauteville hastily returned to Troina, just before the enemy’s arrival. Troina suffered a 4 month siege, toughened by a shortage of provisions and unfriendly climate. Yet, “[…] they still remained strong in their hearts. Each one hid his suffering so as not to discourage the other, even trying to simulate a certain cheerfulness in his demeanor and words. The young countess managed to quench her thirst with water, but she did not know how to check her hunger, except with tears and sleep, since she had nothing else at her disposal.” (in Goffredo Malaterra, The Deeds etc, p.104). Around Christmas 1063, the besieged’s fate was overturned when Roger, leading part of his men, took advantage of the Saracen troop’s hangover (despite being forbidden by the Koran, drinking wine was the only way for the Saracens troops to withstand the cold) and relieved the siege.
The siege of Troina must have been some sort of turning point for Judith, strengthening her character. Once again, Roger left her all alone in Troina, this time going as far as Calabria and Apulia to replenish his lost supplies and gather more soldiers. “Although still just a young woman, the countess was so vigorous in her concern about maintaining the watch around the fortress that she circled it daily and wherever she saw that it could be made better, she assiduously saw to it that a new watch was established. Speaking softly and anxiously to everyone whom her absent lord had left behind with her, she urged them to consider what needed to be protected, promising that they would be rewarded upon the count’s return. She made certain that they never forgot the danger they had experienced lest they find themselves in the same situation again through their own carelessness.” (in Goffredo Malaterra, The Deeds etc, p.106).
In the meantime, the conquest of Sicily went on and, after the military victories at Cerami (1063), Misilmeri (1068) and the conquest of Palermo (1072), the invasion of the Island was quite secured, although still not complete (the last Muslim stronghold, Noto, would capitulate only in 1098). In Palermo, Robert Guiscard invested his brother Roger Count of Sicily. This, nonetheless, didn’t mean that Roger was now the island’s only master since Robert Guiscard, as its suzerain, controlled half of it.
Nothing else is known about Judith, first Countess consort of Sicily, except that she died young, around 1076, while her husband was away. Although sources don’t talk about it, it must have been a heavy blow for her husband since he loved her so dearly.
She would give birth to four daughters: Flandrine, Mathilde, Adelise and Emma, all born between 1062-1063 and all destined to noble matches. Some sources talk about a son too, Jordan, however it’s quite sure he was an illegitimate son born prior the marriage of Roger and Judith (“Although Jordan was the product of a concubine; he was still a man of great strength in body and heart who longed for the glory that came from accomplishing great things.” in Goffredo Malaterra, The Deeds etc, p.165). Around 1081, Jordan would attempt a coup against his father, while he was away from Sicily and had left his son as regent. Once the rebellion failed, Jordan was surprisingly pardoned by his father, and remained faithful to him until the end.
Without a male legitimate heir, Roger Count of Sicily would marry two other times: to Eremburge de Mortain and, finally, to Adelasia Del Vasto.

CAI O PANO: O ÚLTIMO CASO DE POIROT | Agatha Christie, 1975
Tumblr media

The feminine in abstract painting
Shirley Kaneda, OCTOBER 21, 2017
https://www.womenandperformance.org/ampersand/shirley-kaneda-27-3
the notion of the feminine in abstract painting
to constitute a method of intervention, a way to insert into the discourse of identity and gender that had become significantly literary rather than aesthetic.
Since the world is predominantly based on a patriarchal society, the values that are attached to anything are usually masculine. - leading to exclusion of the feminine - the women making art that has just as much importance
“women make distinctive contributions to abstract painting with little recognition.“
concept of the feminine which was both a way to de-stabilize the universalist notion of “quality” and insert an alternative model based on rejected or supposedly inferior notions such as the decorative or the “de-skilled”
Tumblr media
Shirley Jaffe, Adria’s Green (2014). Oil on canvas, 28 ¾ x 23 ½ inches (73×60 cm).
abstraction was no less capable of addressing concerns of gender and that it was imperative to do so in order for abstraction as a genre to evolve out of the hegemony of modernist criteria.
the feminine does not stand in opposition, nor is it “other.” The purpose of illuminating such a discourse was to argue that difference is not otherness
invalidating the diametric structure of the masculine/feminine split
femininity has/had? been owned and dictated by patriarchal society for a long time. Until fairly recently there was little autonomy to express beyond these hegemonic ideals
“By reasserting the feminine as a thing itself, I was attempting to rescue it and propose another set of terms for the construction of a subjecthood and female subjectivity specifically.”
masculine, which represents homogeneity, singularity, and equivalence
The point is to reconstruct a dynamic built on symbiotic asymmetry rather than the notions of competitive dialectic in which a set of contradictions vie for dominance.
As Walter Benjamin pointed out, the difference between Fascism and Socialism is that the Fascists aestheticised politics and the Socialists politicized aesthetics. are we now to speak of a feminine feminism or a feminist feminine? This is not a word play, but a play of concepts: one conceals and the other reveals, “between the idea of a political identity for feminism (what women require) and that of a feminine identity for women (what women are or should be)” (Rose 2011).
we must be conscious not only of what we say, but how we say it.
the feminine and the masculine are not gender bound
The problem that arises in most cases of appropriation of these readymade models is that they are used in non-reflexive modes. In these instances equality becomes reduced to a question of replacing a male figure being (beaten by a cop) with a brutalized female figure. Both are represented using the same vocabulary and the message is seemingly the same: stop brutality. There is no implicit or explicit alternative view proposed by the means of the experience in most cases and the signifier is once again charged with the value of the imagery, which is already recognizable as universal or masculine in its approach.
claim a position, not as other, but independent of the masculine world
cindy sherman - constructs a feminist identity in photography
Tumblr media
Cindy Sherman, Untitled #92, 1981, chromogenic color print, 24 x 48 inches
But what is the relationship of painting to women?
Veteran feminist painters such as Judith Bernstein and Lee Lozano who painted male and female sexual organs to “own” and challenge the patriarchy were marginalized for many years. They are now being recognized and “discovered” by the market’s insatiability.
Tumblr media
Judith Bernstein  “Birth of the Universe #4.”
Tumblr media
Lee Lozano. No title, 1962
Of late, there are women painters who deal directly with feminist issues through figurative imageries of oppression, dominance, abuse, or by appropriating known paintings by men to de-masculinize these visual imageries. Sue Williams has painted penises in the style of Jackson Pollock or Cecily Brown unabashedly paints pornographic scenes of coitus in her otherwise “abstract” paintings.
Tumblr media
Sue Williams, We’ve Got a lot of Work To Do, 1992, acrylic on canvas, 106.7 x 203.2 cm, RFC Museum
Tumblr media
Cecily Brown, Tender is the Night.
Press releases for various exhibitions freely and non-critically use the term “feminist painters” in regard to women painters making abstract paintings.
rather than naming them as feminist paintings, they are more feminine in ways that I have explicated thus far. The feminine allows for a wide range of approaches and one that does not necessarily conform to any set of given standards. The feminine is much like the real, which is virtual and unformed.
male as the mind and female as the body exist not as two qualities in a hierarchical system, but as complements within a situation in which both are predicated on one another.
We can see the feminine quality in the works of the abstract expressionist painter Kimber Smith
Tumblr media
Kimber Smith, Friday the Fourtheenth (1979). Acrylic on canvas, 64 x 68 inches (162.5 x 12.75 cm).
his works were not initially liked by critics such as Greenberg as they were not aggressive enough. In other words, they did not exude masculine qualities associated with certainty, stability, and mastery.
The question of the feminine is a male myth. It is a justification for a fear of becoming victim, and is tied to an impulse to subjugate.
The conventional concept of the feminine rationalized the conflicted impulses of a patriarchal structure by suppressing all that would inhibit the drive to dominate.
the principle of dominance and subordination is no longer constructive
We are living in an increasingly conservative and dangerous world. Facts are being manipulated for the sake of dominance of world order regardless of human cost. In such an environment, the opposition between masculine and feminine and the construction of women’s selfhood becomes subsumed into the larger problem of organized oppression, but we must not distract ourselves of the urgency this puts on the ongoing necessity to establish a more credible relationship to the issue of female identity and how this can impact our society.
Let us not forget that trying to solve the riddle of the enigma of women is strictly a masculine pre-occupation. Women are not concerned with Truth for we know there is no such thing as Truth. Peel one layer or remove a veil and yet another exists, there is no way to eradicate the infinite layers that continue to appear. Such is Truth.

The Interview
Word Count - 4,200
Perspective - 2nd person
When - the first day in Alexandria, when Deanna is interviewing the group. The series has indeed made a quick jump to the future (nonlinear ftw), but soon will revert back to where we left off on the road to the CDC. To read more of the Slowpoke Series, visit the Masterlist.
Relationships - since it’s the main story line, Daryl x reader, and as always “you and the gang.” You don’t see Daryl too much in this particular story, it’s mainly you and Deanna talking, but he’s waiting right outside the door and ready to barge in if the reader needs it.
Genre - it gets a little controversial, but ultimately it is made clear to the reader (hopefully) that the reader is cared for, safe, and not alone. More disclaimers below.
Pronouns - she/her.
TWs - language, and brief allusions to/talk of violence and sexual assault.
Tumblr media
*This was initially an experimental story line, but has now been incorporated*
With this particular story, it is not my intent that anyone feel attacked or offended. I did not decide to write about this for shock value or to make things gritty, and I tried to keep it simple and fairly subtle. I chose to add this story line in honor of some incredibly brave and wonderful women that I have the utmost respect and love for. Their stories fit in a such a broken, fallen world, and I wanted to attempt to do them justice by acknowledging it.
My hope is that I can delete half of these disclaimers, but I will leave them for a while. The internet and Tumblr tend to be a riskier place at times when it comes to controversial subjects, and because tempers tend to run higher when distance and anonymity are involved.
If you wish, please message my inbox anonymously with any constructively critical feedback. Otherwise, please remember to be gentle and respectful with each other and myself if you leave any public comments.
_____________________________________________
“Tell me about yourself,” Deanna requests, her smile warm. Or at least convincing. Never trust a politician, right?
But what the heck are you supposed to answer? And in front of a video camera?
God above, you really wish you weren’t in there. You were going to try to avoid speaking with her entirely, but when Carl was called in for his interview, you’d just about glued yourself to the door to make sure that he and the baby were safe. Then when his interview was over, Deanna greeted you and, well, Rick urged you to let her finally talk to you. Why keep avoiding it, right?
“It’s so wonderful to see that life goes on, even after most of what we used to know has since stopped,” she speaks, comfortably filling in the silence. She’s nodded her head at Judith.
The baby is still in your arms. You’d scooped her back up as soon as Carl was done being interviewed. You disliked letting either of them out of your sight for long. The world isn’t safe for them. All of the other children at the prison were dead now and you are beyond lucky that Carl and Judith weren’t among them.
“Aaron told me that her birth mother was dead, but –”
“– I ain’t her ma,” you interrupt before you can stop yourself. Lori would have fallen head over heels to find a place like this to raise her family. “Excuse me, I’m sorry. I meant to say: no, I’m not Judith’s mother. Just her auntie,” you rephrase it, trying to sound more formal. You even lessened your accent. You aren’t sure why you’re bothering.
Deanna does seem kind, you’d give her that. Authentic, even. But then again, politician.
She holds up a hand and finishes her sentence “But I’d almost think that it was you. Yes, your appearance may not necessarily suggest blood relation, but families aren’t just blood, at least in my mind. I can simply see that you’re very protective of her, of Judith. Her and Carl,” the woman continues, smile somehow even kinder than before. “And I can tell that you will be a very good mother when the time comes.”
You know, you have to hand it to her: her eyes were crinkling in all the right places for that smile to be real. But that name recognition with “Judith” and “Carl,” that was very politician of her.
And that comment about families not being strictly blood? How did she seem to sense how you were raised? You would find it creepy if she didn’t seem so...trustworthy, somehow.
But what was with that last comment? Did someone tell her? Was it Aaron?
“Yes, I’m very protective of them. You gotta be these days, right?” you reply simply, pacing back and forth, bouncing Judith on your hip and holding her tightly.
The idea of sitting down made you nervous. Too easy to get comfortable and wag your lips, reveal too much. What you needed to keep hidden, you weren’t sure. It’s not like your news would go unnoticed for much longer, anyways.
The only thing to really keep hidden would be how big of a threat you could pose, and every last one of you should be doing that. That’s what Carol was doing. It was smart.
“Your whole group seems protective of each other. It’s beautiful, I think. A group of unrelated individuals sticking together and trying to keep each other safe through thick and thin. A family.”
Damn it, Deanna seemed in earnest, that was the problem! What if these people were as fucked up as Terminus?
The people there almost killed your family. Carl and everyone else by those cannibals, Judith and Tyrese (and yourself) by that crazy man in the cabin.
“I’m curious why you’d risk bringin’ in a group like ours,” you declare. And yes, you could have said that more politely. But fuck it, do they not have any idea what’s on the outside?
Or is it that this place is worse than the outside?
Deanna’s head tilts slightly, but she doesn’t seem phased all that much. As if she were putting pieces together and found it amusing, she responds “Rick said something similar, you know.”
“What’d he say?”
“He said that we should keep our gates closed. That it was all about survival now, and that there are people who...” She pauses. “Who take advantage of others, for their gain.”
After a longer stare at you than you preferred, she sighs and continues “Well, to that I say that’s always been the case, has it not? And that’s precisely why I then asked him if, in telling me this and warning me of it, that he wasn’t already being protective of this place.”
How is she so damned….tranquil? Welcoming? Was this all a set-up or something? What is this place?
“Aaron assured me y’all don’t eat people. That true?” you question sharply. Ugh, and you need to rest your head on Judith’s for a moment, you’re starting to feel dizzy. And you may or may not have glared into the camera when you blurted out the accusation.
Her expression goes from confused to alarmed, but all very controlled. She’d make a good poker player.
“Y/N. We don’t do that here. And we never will. I’m –” she inhales. “I’m sorry. For what was done to you. For what you’ve gone through to make you so distrustful. And I don’t doubt that is what’s kept you alive, kept all of you alive and together for so long. And that is why we are welcoming you.” She shakes her head slightly. “This is a community. Civilization.”
This is all a very good put on, isn’t it? To make you all put your guards down, to feel safe, to feel like you were needed and wanted here. You didn’t trust Terminus either, and that turned out to be for a good reason. And even though you don’t feel the same dread here, you don’t want to risk trusting this place.
Hell, but somehow no one else but yourself seemed to feel that unease except Daryl and Sasha.
“Why ain’t you worried that we are a threat? Ma’am.” You really don’t feel well right now.
She lowers her brows and studies your face. Then, she only shrugs. “You are a threat. All of you. You are strong, you are smart, and you are protective. And that’s why Aaron assured me that we can trust all of you. Why he brought you and your family here to be a part of our community.”
Now, she leans forward on her elbows and looks at you with a expression of triumph on her face, of pride even. “You’re good people.”
“Why would you think us ‘good’ people?”
She gazes back and forth at you and the baby, then turns it around. “Why do you think I shouldn’t?”
What? Of course she should!
Oh. You’d insinuated otherwise, hadn’t you?
Stupid, stupid Y/N. Glenn is in the group. Maggie! Tara, Carl...everyone! Even the new ones seemed to be good people. You’d defend the idea that wonder-mullet Eugene has integrity, even though he and Father Gabriel need to work on courage.
You kiss Judith’s head and close your eyes. Just in case this place is for real, Carl and Judith deserve a safe place. You’ll need a safe place, too. This was Lori’s dream in the before-times. And maybe Jacqui and Dr. Jenner would have chosen to live if they knew that you’d all find a place like this. If they survived everything that came before this.
“I don’t think that we’re bad people,” you mumble. You press another kiss to the baby’s head and inhale her scent. How on earth do babies smell so good?
“Tell me what you do think, Y/N. Because I don’t think you’re bad people, either. And Aaron certainly didn’t, and he was observing you all for quite some time.” She inclines her head, slightly frowning. “Sweetheart, you look very drained. Perhaps you’d feel better if you sat down.”
You don’t respond to her offer to sit, though maybe you should. “I’d say it’s usually, um,” you swallow and think on it. Oh shit, you need to lean on the windowsill at this point; you really don’t feel too good.
Changing the subject, you instead question “The, um, the curly haired guard out front said they won’t let people carry weapons here. Why?”
“When people decide to stay, we keep the weapons in a safe place. But they’re still yours, and they are yours to check them out whenever you venture outside the walls.” Deanna is standing up and walking over to you now. “That’s why we are fine with you still carrying them. Since you’re not sure whether you’d like to stay or not.” She stops and stands a ways away, you note, and for that you are grateful.
“Guess you weren’t the type who believed ‘an armed society is a polite one,’” you observe, reining in your grimace. Subtly, you peek down at your boot knives to make sure they are still there and easily reachable.
“There’s an awful lot of armed people out there now. Would you call it a polite society?” she asks, humor blooming in her face.
Yeah, you don’t appreciate the joke, not after everything that happened. You ignore your thoughts of Terminus and (you shudder) the Claimers and focus only on the The Governor.
He had found a fucking RPG or whatever and obliterated one of the prison guard towers. Your tower, you just hadn’t been in it. The only reason that the survivors of your group were still alive in the first place was because they had weapons ready and on them when he attacked, or had been protected by those who did!
“It’s about levelin’ the field, ma’am. You don’t know what’s gonna come over them walls or blast their way through it.” Okay, you need to rest a second, you really need to sit down. You bend forward slightly to try and get a reprieve without appearing too obvious.
“You know, I think I have to say it, Y/N,” she points out, and with a smile cannot possibly be more triumphant. “It sounds like you’re already protecting this place, too.” Turning to the window, she adds “Now, I’m going to open this up so you can have some fresh air. You are looking unwell, and I’m concerned. When did you last eat?”
“I ain’t hungry, thank – I’m not hungry, thank you.” You know that you need to, but you’ve been too scared and exhausted and worried to feel hunger. What’s more is you know that feeding someone is a good way of relaxing them. But you can’t let your guard down now, you don’t even know these people.
“Would you like me to take her so you can rest a moment?” Deanna next offers, arms out for the baby.
Abso-fucking-lutely not! Nearly baring your teeth, you square your stance at the offer and clutch Judith more tightly.
Whoa, whoa, you try to calm yourself. Deanna is not an immediate threat. Most likely. You breathe in through your nose and out through your mouth. Gentle, deep belly breathing.
You know that you aren’t reacting rationally, but it is difficult to ignore the nagging fear in the pit of your stomach that is telling you otherwise. You’d been hesitant to go into Terminus, and look how that turned out.
Shit, now your arms are starting to shake. Okay, that’s enough. You are beginning to panic, and it’s affecting Judith. And it would reflect upon everyone else if you react even more poorly during a simple interview.
“Ma’am, I just need to, uh, m’sorry – a minute is all,” you assure Deanna, then make for the door. “I think the l-little one might could need a diaper change.”
You grip the door handle, start to open it, and are startled to find Daryl right there. Oh. And Rick is standing against the wall opposite him next to Carol, who’s in clean clothes and looking very...in-character. It suits her, though, in a way. Aaron is also there, for some reason, talking quietly with Sasha.
“Rick, t-take her, please,” you exhale, voice shaking.
“Hey, you need to get out of here?” Daryl asks you, his hand ghosting at your arm but not touching it.
Rick takes the baby from you and starts to say something, but when you look around and don’t see Carl, you interrupt “Rick, where is he?” in a slight panic. Oh heck, and you’re gripping Daryl’s arm way too tightly. You didn’t even realize you’d grabbed it.
“It’s okay.” Rick has Judith in one arm, and placed the other on your shoulder. “Michonne is with him. He’s safe. All of our people are safe right now, I promise.”
“That don’t mean shit!” you hiss before you can stop yourself. Immediately regretting it, you cover your face and lean against the shut door. Carol comes over and leans next to you. You start to fiddle with Shane’s old ‘22’ necklace that you keep around your neck. “I’m sorry, Rick, that came out harsh.”
Poor Rick’s expression looks a little defeated, to say the least. “You don’t have to apologize, Y/N.”
“C’mon, that wasn’t fair of me,” you insist, and Sasha gives you a look. It actually is a little fair. You’d begged Rick not to let Carl go into Terminus, to instead have the boy to wait with you outside the boundaries until you knew that it was a safe place.
But Carl did end up going in there, and you’d almost lost him. Lost all of them. It wasn’t even enough when you’d razed their settlement, the survivors had hunted you all down, stolen Bob, and eaten his fucking calf.
But that wasn’t lost on Rick. You can practically see it weighing him down, torturing him. So why would you twist the knife?
“Hey. You don’t look too good,” Daryl murmurs to you. “Is it your head, or the, um –”
“– It’s okay, I just need to sleep. Kinda dizzy.”
Carol starts to rub your arm comfortingly, and you begin to relax. Then Daryl holds eye contact with you for as long as you’ll allow it. “You eat anythin’?”
The both of you had come far. Back when you’d first found each other again on that roadside, you two could barely look at each other. Not because of any hatred or anything, just...it’s how it was. After.
You shake your head and quickly glance at Aaron. You’re still uncertain about him. “I’m gonna head back in. Finish talkin’ to her.”
“You sure?” When he said this, his hand gently touches yours, so lightly that you would have missed it if you hadn’t seen him do it.
“Why, you gonna fry up that possum?” you attempt to tease. The residents of this place must have been...intrigued, when he walked in with that thing in his hand. Daryl makes a sort of snort as he smiles response. Carol and Rick outright chuckle, and Aaron, to his credit, appears to have the good sense to try not to. Sasha looks at you and smiles as best she can.
Carol leans in closer and reassures you quietly “We’ll be right outside the door waiting. Okay?”
“And when we get back, I’ll keep watch first so you can sleep for a while,” Sasha tells you.
“Since when did I get so needy?” you half-joke. You are of course touched that they're there, but also almost...ashamed that they knew they should be, that you’d need it. Yes, you were grateful for their support and even for their pity, but you hate feeling weak.
Turning back around and swallowing to keep the tears in, you pray that things will go smoothly and quickly as you twist the doorknob to walk back into the Deanna’s living room.
“Thank you for waiting for me, ma’am,” you say to her.
“I feel that I may have frightened you, Y/N. I apologize, it was not intentional,” the woman acknowledges. She’s holding a glass of water in one hand and something else in the other.
“It ain’t you, ma’am, it’s me,” you respond in an attempt to be pleasant.
You’re rewarded with another of her warm, almost playful smiles. “This is for you,” Deanna tells you, holding out an unopened can of ginger ale. You swallow. So she does know, or at least suspects it.
“It might be flat after all this time, but please, have some. I would have gotten you a glass of water, too, but I imagined that something completely sealed would be preferred.”
Hesitantly, you mumble “Thank you,” reach for the can, open it, and take a sip. And hesitantly again, you sit down in the chair opposite Deanna. You try not to sink into the soft cushion so obviously, but oh holy Moses, you could fall asleep right there if your people were with you. Thank God Sasha promised you that she’d take watch so you could nap after this.
“When we left off, you were, I’d say, almost concerned at the idea that we’d simply let your group in. That we want you here, as a part of this community. That I think that you and your family are good people. I would like to know what your thoughts on that are.”
Oh right, and you’d changed the subject. What were your thoughts?
The people at Terminus had come to the conclusion that it was kill or be killed, eat or be eaten.
The Governor thought that he was justified in doing what he did in order to protect or avenge his own or whatever.
Even the Claimers had their own fucked up moral code.
And your group wasn’t exempt, no way in hell. Look at what happened to Shane, your own brother. Look at how Carol’s code had gotten fucked up, and how Rick’s was starting to. Hell, your own code was shot. You would never and should never forget the way that you’d sauntered out of the woods that night and onto that roadside after finally finding them again. The men you were hunting and your family. And how you’d found it downright delicious the way you’d growled “Bite his fuckin’ neck off, Rick.”
Aiming to ignore those memories and make light of Deanna’s question, you brush it off with “Ain’t you worried about us needin’ to be housebroken again, ma’am? You’ve seen Rick’s beard.”
A genuine laugh comes out of her, and she shakes her head. “Not at all. I’m not worried about any of you having gone, uh, let’s say feral; just regarding yourself, you’ve called me ‘ma’am’ far too many times for that to be a concern.”
She then takes a sip of water and relaxes back into the couch, a smile still lighting up her face.
You take another sip of the ginger ale and lean forward to put the can on the coaster when you see the bottle of vitamins on the coffee table. Prenatals. Those hadn’t been there before.
For only a moment do you freeze before continuing on as your were.
It’s fine. It isn’t any big secret, it was just...what it was.
“W-was it Aaron who told you or somebody else?” you ask quietly.
“Most of your group alluded to there being a pregnant woman among you, but without naming names. So I narrowed it down between yourself, Maggie, and Sasha, and well. You’ve got quite the amount of protectors out there.”
And as you sat back again into the soft chair, you glance at her, then find that now you’re fidgeting with Beth’s bracelet that she’d given you, and Dale’s old watch. You’d taken it before he’d been buried, and still wind it up like he’d always done.
Well, to be honest you’d forgotten a few times, so now weren’t quite sure of the actual date or time.
Deanna speaks again. “Please. I really do want to know what you think about it. Because I have a knack for reading people, and am quite certain that you aren’t...malicious, and that no one in your group is. That you and your family are people with integrity.”
Dale enters the forefront of your mind as you wind that old watch of his. He and you used to discuss things like this. Philosophical things, like morality and ethics.
Hershel joins him in your head, as you remember how he’d so wholly believed that no one was too far gone to be good again. T-Dog joins the two of them as you recall how he’d always chosen good, no matter how difficult it was. And Tyreese follows, so desperately wanting to not have to kill anymore.
It’s the good ones that the world seemed to chew up and take, wasn’t it? You wish that you could talk to any one of them again. Just once.
And before Amy or Beth can make themselves too present in your thoughts as well, you look up at Deanna.
Finding some semblance of your words, you respond “It’s how far in the wrong direction someone is willin’ to go to ignore their conscience. Or to reorder it, or alter or somethin’ to justify their bad.”  Bite his fuckin’ neck off, Rick. “If th-they have a well-formed conscience in the first place.” You swallow, then add “Usually.”
“I agree with you, Y/N. And I like how you said it.” She leans forward. “And you know what? I still want you here. I want all of you here,” she says, gently and earnestly. “This place is a fresh start, regardless of what you’ve done in the past.”
She notices you eyeing the bottle on the coffee table as she was talking. “Please. Take them, they’re for you,” she tells you, inclining her head towards the vitamins. “As your group’s medic, I’m sure you know how important it is to nourish yourself right now.” And there’s that look of pity you’ve gotten so used to.
She then halts as her hand moves towards the camera.
“I haven’t ever, um, turned it off during an interview, to be honest. But I want for you to have privacy when I ask you something.”
And she reaches over and finally pauses the video. “If I wasn’t paying attention, I would assume that Daryl was the father.”
Finding it curious that she’d drawn that hypothesis, since you and Daryl weren’t ever romantically linked, you shake your head.
“Alright. I will only ask you once, so that I’m clear about what happened to you and so I know how to help you.” She appears to be trying to find the right wording, so you help her by speaking first.
And you remain calm. What happened, happened. What was happening, was happening – and you are not alone, you know that. And maybe you are even safe here, as tricky as that word can be these days.
“You can turn the camera on, ma’am. It’s there for transparency.”
Deanna presses her hands together as her brows knit close. “You’re certain you’re comfortable with that?”
“Yes.” You watch as she presses the record button again and the red light turns back on.
She inhales. “It was someone else, or a group out there who harmed you?”
“They're dead now.” Bite his fuckin’ neck off, Rick. “They were, um, gonna do the s-same thing they did to me to two of them. To Michonne, but first to C-Carl,” your voice nearly breaks but you remain steady, even though you need to cover your eyes. “And they were about to kill Rick and Daryl, but...” You shrug and swallow. “They didn’t know I’d found them again. So we killed ‘em first.”
“Good.” Her response is firm and immediate. And when she says it, as surprised as you are, you have no doubt that she means it. True to her word, she asks nothing further to fill in the blanks.
She allows you to calm your breathing and relax again before continuing on.
“Next, I’d like to go over the practical part of this discussion: your job here, and what we can offer you. And your job was a very easy decision,” she shares. “Since you are the group’s medic, and you all are in remarkably good health, especially considering how long you’ve been out there, I would like you to assist our doctors some of the time, learn more from them.”
“Some of the time?”
“Yes. Based on the way that you were reacting to protect Judith just a few minutes ago, and how Aaron observed you around her and Carl; that is something very reassuring. And having somebody like that, helping to mind the children here – we don’t have many, yet – but, well, there’s nothing I’d like more for the kids here than someone so protective.” She tilts her head and smiles. “Now, what medical training did you receive, if any?”
“I, um, I worked as a phlebotomist, and had just got EMT trained. Took health and anatomy courses in college. After the world changed, I was taught by a vet – a veterinarian – who saved both Carl’s and Daryl’s lives as well as my own and several others. Then for a good while, he and I worked with a doc back in our old settlement, too. Got lots of training with Caleb.”
“What were their names?” she asks kindly. Your eyes flit up at hers. “I believe it is important to remember those who have helped us,” she explains.
Fighting back tears, you nod. “Hershel Greene and Caleb Subramanian.”
“Well, I am thankful for them.”
Damn, if she wasn’t a great politician. You would even go so far as to say that you like her.
Maybe you’d even say that you feel somewhat at ease here. Maybe.
“Our own doctors here are Peter Anderson and Denise Cloyd. Pete is our official physician, but Denise had some fairly extensive medical training before switching education paths to psychology.” This last part she stresses, but subtly. “She acts as both a part time doctor and psychologist. And if I may, she’s very good at what she does.”
Point taken. You nod politely, then check “And will I be able to go on runs, or are we restricted to our assigned duties?” God help her if she said no. God help you if she said no.
“You are free to go outside the walls, yes.
