#luisa does a lot of heavy lifting

What were some of the things you enjoyed about Encanto? I wanted to like it but it just didn't do it for me.
I thought it was really well-done. There are some story things that don’t sit right with me, and the message is not good, and some of the characterizations are a little irresponsible if you want to consider it a kid’s movie… but I’ll leave that for a different post.
I liked how every character’s design felt like they put so much thought into it. I don’t just mean the costumes (even though they’re genius. Obviously Mirabel’s outfit having little nods to each member of her family, looking like she made it herself just like every helpful thing she does is on her own without superpowers, details like that, we’re great.) I mean, the fact that every character could be separated from the rest of the cast, plopped in their own movie, and still “look” like the main character. At first I didn’t like that. It wasn’t very Bancroft of them. But then I realized:
That’s the point of the movie. Everybody’s special. Everybody’s a miracle on their own, everybody is the main character of their own story, everybody’s important. So they all look like and even have personalities interesting enough to have their own movie, each.
I thought a lot of the humor really hit! Maybe my favorite gag was when Bruno “falls” but then it turns out, no, he’s fine.
I do love the music. I do. I don’t know, I’ve never loved that all of Lin Manuel Miranda’s songs sound like…Lin Manuel Miranda…and all of the main characters sound like him when they sing…but still, I thought the songs had a feeling of unity to them.
I love that the heavy-lifting, muscly girl character sings a song about how she wishes she could put down the weight of expectations—specifically to be strong—and there’s this visual thing in the background. When she sings “but wait! If I could shake! This growing weight!” he donkeys she was carrying around suddenly are wearing makeup and look like unicorns. That could just as easily have been a choice made to accentuate the sudden calm, weightless vibe of the song…they’re dressed like unicorns because it’s a comedic way to communicate “dream sequence…” But I like to think it was also a nod to it being okay for Luisa to STOP being all “stronger than Gaston” and embrace actual soft girliness.
I think the chemistry between a lot of the family members was hit-or-miss, because Mirabel seems awkward around Luisa and her cousins, but much more realistic with Isabella or her mom. But I do think a lot of her interactions with her mom and Isabella are relatable, and realistic. Felt like the filmmakers were putting some genuine experiences into those conversations, and that always boosts the scene.
I think the main character is genuinely likeable—or at least, you can feel for her for a lot of the movie. I mean, sometimes she comes off as annoying to me, but I DON’T think you can walk away from it going, “the filmmakers didn’t know who Mirabel was, she was just whatever they needed her to be in the moment.” I think they had her characterization down: she’s always treading water to keep her head above feeling sorry for herself by refusing to feel sorry for herself, and focus on others.
That’s all kind of washed down the drain by the message being so self-focused, but that’s a post for another time.
Lastly, the written dialogue is pretty good! Again, I think that comes from having a clear idea of what your movie is trying to say, and who each of your characters are in order to nail that message—and Encanto does that, for better or worse.
It knows that it’s trying to say, “all your flaws, strengths, potential and failures make you who you are: and who you are is special.” I don’t love that. But it says it clearly and engagingly, even if…
…well, no, another post! 😅 another time!

Miracles Plus AU: Luisa
Guess who isn’t a workaholic anymore.
She was tied with Isabela on the poll, so I posted them in alphabetical order.
~~~~~~
At this point in the timeline, Luisa has been mainly focused on herself.
She still does her heavy lifting but she has branched off into construction (her main job now), after finding out she really enjoys it when rebuilding Casita.
Luisa will build anything from houses to barns to churches to carts to shelves. She does it all. Though her schedule is often double checked by her parents to make sure she isn’t unintentionally overworking herself - and they would be proud to say she hasn’t in the past ten years.
During the time, she has had a couple of girlfriends but hasn’t truly found the one yet. But there’s no pressure for her to do so. In saying that, she does sometimes wonder if she’s getting too old to still be single.
The process would probably be going a lot better if Dolores wasn’t so insistent at playing matchmaker.
She’s the most desirable bride in town (more so than Mirabel because Luisa will actually socialise and doesn’t have a habit of cancelling last minute). She receives a lot of the praise and admiration that use to be solely Isabela’s. Not that she would ever brag about it to her big sister… no, of course not…
Luisa is also open to the idea of children, once she finds a partner, but it isn’t a necessity for her life. She’ll be happy enough to just stay a childless Tía.
Soooo. My nieces and nephew wanted to watch Encanto for the 300th time and of course I have to make literally everything about the bloodline so here is a thread no one asked for comparing Encanto characters to the personalities of characters in the bloodline storyline. This is probably gonna be insanely long so buckle up I guess.
I repeat I am referring to CHARACTERS in the STORYLINE here. Not actual people.
Roman = Luisa
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"Who am I if I can't run with the ball? If I fall to. Pressure like a grip, grip, grip, and it won't let go, whoa..."
Luisa is under pressure constantly to be the strong one, to handle things for her family and just make sure things are taken care of. Just like Roman who has pressure from the elders to be the head of the table, to keep the championship(s), to be the leader and the strong one and handle all the family problems.
"Under the surface, I hide my nerves and it worsens, I worry something is gonna hurt us. Under the surface, the ship doesn't swerve as it heard how big the iceberg is. Under the surface, I think about my purpose, can I somehow preserve this? Line up the dominoes, a light wind blows. You try to stop it tumbling, but on and on, it goes. But wait, if I could shake the crushing weight of expectations, Would that free some room up for joy or relaxation, or simple pleasure? Instead, we measure this growing pressure. Keeps growing, keep going. 'Cause all we know is Pressure like a drip, drip, drip that'll never stop, whoa. Pressure that'll tip, tip, tip 'til you just go pop, whoa, oh, oh. Give it to your sister, it doesn't hurt, and See if she can handle every family burden. Watch as she buckles and bends but never breaks, no mistakes..."
Jey = Mirabel
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"Don't be upset or mad at all. Don't feel regret, or sad at all. Hey, I'm still a part of the family Madrigal. And I'm fine, I am totally fine. I will stand on the side as you shine. I'm not fine, I'm not fine..."
Mirabel wanted to shine too. Not just that but she saw all of the pressure on Luisa and wanted to take some off of her. She wanted to make the family proud too and in the end she would be the one to save everyone. Just like Jey. Not to mention, she's the main character.
"Always walking alone. Always wanting for more, Like I'm still at that door. Longing to shine like all of you shine. All I need is a change. All I need is a chance. All I know is I can't stay on the side. Open your eyes..."
Jimmy = Isabella
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"So much hides behind my smile..."
Isabella constantly has a smile and portrays happiness and perfection at all times but the stress drives her wild and when she finally lets loose it's quite literally a mess but she does have her family's best interest at heart just like all the others. Like Jimmy.
"What could I do if I just grew what I was feeling in the moment? What could I do if I just knew it didn't need to be perfect? It just needed to be, and they let me be..."
Solo = Bruno
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"Seven foot frame, Rats along his back. When he calls your name, it's all fades to black..."
Bruno is perceived as this big scary monster of a guy, this imposing figure when he's actually the sweetest little softy that loves his family more than anything. Like Solo.
Paul = Delores
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"Live in fear of Bruno stuttering or stumbling. I could always hear him sort of muttering and mumbling. I associate him with the sound of falling sand (sh sh sh) It's a heavy lift, with a gift so humbling..."
Do those lyrics not sound like Paul hyping Solo up? Not to mention Delores is the "Wise Woman" of the family. If they need to know what's going on, what to do about it etc they go to her.
Elders = Abuela
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"But let's be clear, Abuela runs this show, whoa. She led us here so many years ago, whoa. And every year our family blessings grow. There's just a lot you've simply got to know, so. Welcome to the Family Madrigal..."
Abuela, like the Elders of the bloodline are the ones actually running the show. They pressure the kids to uphold legacy and maintain tradition but have no clue the pressure could be hurting them. In the end as misguided as they are they want what's best for the family too.
I would have a headcanon if you want to hear about it. At first Hugo feels completely flabbergasted by Varian's strength. Like, the one time he lifted Prometheus from a mud pit like he weights nothing he and the rest was "HUH" but after a while he just got used to it. Now when they are cleaning the living room with Varian's newly invented vacuum cleaner, Hugo just casually asks his boyfriend to lift the couch. Which he does, with one hand, over his head. The damn boy is strong as a monster.
Uhm...look, lifting a horse with two hands, sure. Carrying a few people, sure. But lifting a whole couch with one hand? No. He's not Luisa or Mr. Incredible, he's not born with unnatural super-strength. He's just gained some decent muscles from his work as an inventor. Varian is not "strong as a monster", he's as strong as a man that spends a lot of time lifting weights at the gym. And that's even taking into account that, honestly and realistically, trying to lift even a light, empty box with one hand would knock you off-balance and you would drop it. I would know, because I have tried picking up an empty box from below with one hand, and one as long as a couch? Forget it. There's a reason that movers work in groups and carry couches in groups of two, not because they're weak, but because of balance. Aside from that part, I could see him easily picking up a donkey and carrying the others out of danger. But the donkey would probably take two hands just because of Varian's size. No matter how tall he is, he's not Shrek. He's not an ogre, or a giant, or a monster. He's just an inventor that hauls heavy equipment and parts. I swear, the more some people seem to forget he's canonly only human and is sized like a human, the more uncomfortable I feel. I get it, some people think he's hot, they like 'em strong, and they like 'em tall. But there's a limit to this. This is as bad as someone that likes short and weak Varian imagining him so weak he can't lift a wrench and he's only 2 feet tall. It's a ridiculous extreme that is getting old. Moon Magic didn't make Cassandra super-strong, so it shouldn't make Varian into Mr. Incredible.
Okay but also gorgeous hunky (gay?🤭) women aside, I really think these two would get along just because of how much pressure👀 they’re both under to support their families and everyone around them as the eldest sisters who also happen to be very physically strong.
Like Luisa obv speaks for herself in her song (btw highly recommend yall read/listen to the full thing) when she says:
”I'm pretty sure I'm worthless if I can't be of service”
”Give it to your sister, your sister's older Give her all the heavy things we can't shoulder Who am I if I can't run with the ball?”
”I hide my nerves and it worsens, I worry something is gonna hurt us”
So we gather pretty easily over the course of the movie that when people ”ask” Luisa to do things there isn’t really room for her to say no, so she has an impossible time relaxing, struggles to deal with the guilt she develops when her powers start leaving (something that was outside her control), and generally finds it really difficult to communicate her stress unless someone like Mirabel pries and pries and pries.
I also want to take a moment to emphasize that when she first noticed that her powers were disappearing, what she said was lifting xyz “felt heavy.” Like not even “I couldn’t pick up X,” or “Y wouldn’t budge when I pushed,” but something “felt heavy,” implying she‘s never even allowed herself to feel the weight of everything she’s been asked to hold.
My girl Vi is super similar because time and time again she finds herself in situations where it‘s basically up to her alone to save everybody, like when she decides to give herself up to the enforcers (as a child) so they’ll stop hunting her siblings, or when she has to fight Silco’s whole crew by herself (as a child) to give her family time to escape, or when she resolves to take down Silco by herself after Jayce quits on her, and that’s all without mentioning the many formative years she spent getting beat up in prison while serving an indefinite sentence on no charge - or the fact that even when she does have back up, she never gives up the mindset that it’s her job to protect everybody else and no one’s job to protect her.
I also think this is part of why it’s so unfortunate that parts of the fandom were mad at her for punching Powder for (accidentally) killing their adoptive dad and brothers, and then later leaving Jinx alone on the bridge and just generally making small bad/grey calls, because even putting aside the immense amount of trauma Vi is ALSO carrying, she‘s actually been handling herself incredibly well so far.
Like going back to the punch, as an older sibling who also happens to know a lot of ppl with siblings, siblings fight MUCH more brutally than that over MUCH smaller things all the time. That doesn’t excuse hurting Powder per se, but it makes it weird to me that so many people were ready to hate her for it, especially when immediately after hitting Powder she realized that she’d messed up, looked at her hand in horror, and left (for a literal second (before getting kidnapped)) to cool down and process the extreme loss she‘d just finished dealing with before taking on the responsibility of parenting her sister again.
Over the course of Arcane, we’re shown Vi has an incredible amount of guilt related to her separation from her sister (which was outside her control), struggles to communicate because of how reliant she’d become on her fists, and generally finds relaxing impossible.
There‘s so much more I want to say / elaborate on, but essentially yeah these women are my queens, love them and the way they love their people so much, would defend them with my last breathe. Thanks sm if you made it this far!
You are absolutely right, Connor is the best and you should say it! I've played through the first two series, myself (I keep trying and failing to get through Origins, as much as I want to, because it's beautiful and Bayek is amazing), but Connor is hands-down my favorite assassin, too -- I'm so excited to have found someone else that feels the same way!
(With that said, if you'd feel like breaking down what Connor and Luisa have in common the way you did with Altair and Bruno, I would love to see it!)
Sorry for getting to this so late but !! Yes yes!! I’m not a huge fan of the later games personally but I’m glad you’re making your way through origins (bayek is a great character too!)
Connor is absolutely still my favorite though. Am I attached since ac3 is my first assassin’s creed game? Probably!
As for the similarities, honestly I was making comparisons between assassin’s creed and Encanto bc hyperfixations go brrr but honestly I might have something here HSBNSB
Again, I started the comparisons as more of a shitpost though so most of the similarities are more superficial
Connor and Luisa are the buffest characters of their respective franchises (in my head at least), they both have hard exteriors with a heart of gold where they just wanna do right and not disappoint anyone in the process, and they’re definitely burdened with way too much responsibility and expectations place upon them from a really young age. Connor is tasked with not only reviving the colonial brotherhood, but also keeping the Davenport homestead functional and running and trying to make time to help everyone with their chores, and Luisa of course does so so much for the Encanto, including lots of farm work and heavy lifting and being there for the whims of anyone and everyone. They both neglect themselves in the process of all this while trying to focus on the “big” picture, and feeling like they should be able to handle all this burden in order to please an end goal and maintain that for fear of losing everything. They both have to put up a stoic front, and they both very desperately need a break and they’re actually pretty sensitive individuals.
With Connor especially too, since he’s trying so hard to tie together so many facets and strings and hold his own with the brotherhood, dealing with Haytham and his Templars, the tough mentorship of Achilles, the thankless job of being an assassin, being there for the homestead and insuring it flourishes, the politics and conflicts of everything around him, trying to keep his ties to his culture… he’s just being torn between this way and that with no reprieve at all, and in the end he doesn’t get his personal happy ending despite everything he tries. I couldn’t exactly say the same for Luisa since Luisa in the end at least had her needs understood and met and she could relax and I’m so happy for her for it but,,, yeah thinking abt Connor is making me sad again aurgh.
But here’s my brain dump!!
Long story short, Connor and Luisa are big buff bitches who need a break.
What head canons do you have about Luisa and her quest to find ways to relax, maybe finding a hobby?
Luisa's not suuuper great at relaxing, obviously, so she goes through a lot of tries at it before she starts getting into it instead of feeling weird or guilty or useless during the process. She is low-key baffled by the concept of hobbies, though. Hobbies are for people who DON'T need to move the church today. Right??
Notable attempts at Luisa finding a hobby include:
Sewing with Mirabel. Luisa isn't great at delicate work or particularly inclined to it either, but she does like making things. They make a whole lot of presents for people. Mostly Mirabel makes and Luisa just assists where she can, but still counts!
Gardening with Isabela. Luisa is better at digging holes than nurturing plants but GREAT at weeding. Isabela is still largely unfamiliar with the need to weed things even after the de-powering incident, so that's appreciated.
Gossiping with Dolores. Luisa isn't actually particularly interested in gossip but Dolores knows enough of it to carry the conversation, and Luisa DOES like that Dolores trusts her to keep her mouth shut on sensitive topics.
Training donkeys with Antonio. This basically just amounts to Antonio doing a lot of explaining as to why staying in the pen is safer and less annoying, but it saves Luisa SO MUCH time in the long run.
The Noodle Incident. Camilo and Luisa are no longer allowed to hang out without supervision.
In the end Luisa less adopts a hobby of her own and more develops a hobby of supporting everyone ELSE'S hobbies, which is not exaaactly what they all intended but does let her just be chill and laid back while other people do the heavy lifting. She also gets to actually spend dedicated time with people as opposed to just jumping from problem to problem all day.
Regarding the tainted AU- and I apologize if you've answered this already, does Luisa have any sort of buried sadness/grief when it comes to Mirabel? Like does she ever wish that they could be real sisters again or feel guilty for Mirabel's state (even if she's not at fault)
Were they close before the incident? If not, of the kids, who WAS Mirabel closest to?
And does Luisa harber any suppressed negativity towards Abeula?
So far she just seems like one of the most potentially redeemable ones in this AU aside from Julieta
(Btw, I absolutely love all your art and posts about your AU's, you're a super talented creator!)
Hi!
I absolutely love Luisa ✨
She’s a rule follower, and does what her family asks her to, but even in the film we see that see has a lot of unsaid opinions and thoughts which she just…never shares with anyone.
Luisa never agreed with Mirabel being taken out of the Casita. She was 14 years old when it happened, old enough to know the difference between what was right and wrong. But she was a girl who, by that point, was conditioned into doing what the family told her to do, therefore never stood up, or spoke up, about what she felt. Julieta and Luisa remained close afterwards, and Luisa had plenty of times where she was hurting so much and needed to vent, one time where she broke a few of her mamas plates out of frustration and they had a big cry about it.
Luisa as an adult doesn’t really know how to approach Mira, or handle when they happen to cross paths; generally she’s just super conflicted over it. Like…she wants to be there for her, but by now Mirabel wants nothing to do with people other then using them to forward her end goal. Mirabel is so far away that them being sisters feels a lot like a stretch sometimes. They are closer to strangers, if not tense acquaintances. Luisa though will always talk to Mira, even if it’s just a simple ‘hello’. She’ll also report back to Julieta if something seems wrong; like if Mirabel is sick, wounded, or getting thin.
Mirabel was generally close to Luisa as a girl, yes. She loved her big sister to bits, and Luisa loved how small Mira was even if it annoyed Isabela to no end. But the whole family kinda…drifted, after the failed gift ceremony. Abuela showed a lot less fondness for Mira, therefore many others did as well. Luisa wanted to stay close, but she was working so much, and Mira was becoming distanced more and more by the day. Luisa saw the anger in her little sister, as she saw it in herself. She saw the pent up frustration, and despair, and…dangerous curiosity. But she thought one of the adults would help like her mama tried to. She trusted her elders to take care of her sister where she could not.
Luisa has a lot of withheld opinions, similar to Julieta does. A lot of frustration at her family, not just over Mirabel, but over her own workload as well. She hates being defined by her gift, and doing nothing but heavy lifting. But that’s the status quo in the Madrigal family; and therefore Luisa holds her tongue. Abuela frustrates her plenty by showing so much favoritism over Isabela, and no one else. Luisa doesn’t talk to her much anymore, and usually keeps to herself.
What a wonderful ask! Hopefully this answered a few of your questions :3
Idk why but I enjoy Mariano filling in that role of big brother among the Madrigal grankids. I just think it would be cute, especially if he is older than Isabela and Dolores even if only by a few months.
Mirabel who was friends with Mariano before (at least in my hc) just jumps right in. Antonio follows Mirabel's lead.
Camilo would hesitate at first, because for the longest time he was the oldest son among the Madrigal grandkids and when Bruno was gone he was the oldest Madrigal born son. Camilo was used to being the older brother and not having one. Though the more time he spends with Mariano the more he likes the idea of an older brother. Especially after Mariano helps Camilo repair his relationship with Mirabel and Camilo gets his best friend back.
Luisa would be kind of neutral. Mariano would get in her good graces though when he proves he can help her out with some of the heavy lifting chores she does.
Mariano was worried about Isabela because everything towards the end of their arranged betrothal was a mess, but Isabela is a lot warmer to him now. He learns that Isabela does love him but she's never been in love with him.
It takes a while but Mariano finds his place among the family, and he's happy about it. He did always want a large family.
Always and Forever
Chapter 1:
Your eyes stared at themselves reflected in the mirror, it was increasingly difficult to contain the tears that wanted to well up in them.
You were feeling nervous and scared like never before in your life.
After being counseled and encouraged by your best friend, you had finally decided that you would once and for all tell your parents about something that would completely change their view of you.
As a teenager almost coming to the age of majority in less than 2 months, your mother would always ask you why of all the daughters of her friends who were your age, they already had boyfriends and some were even married, but you didn't and didn't even seem like a little bit of interested in following their model.
The truth was, you absolutely didn't like men, something you had a lot of doubts about at first because your mother always acted like it was the most abominable and wrong thing in the world when two people of the same sex liked each other.
What wouldn't she do if something she totally disapproved of happened to her only child?
Fortunately, Luisa opened your eyes and made you understand that there was nothing wrong with loving someone of the same sex as you, after all, it was love and love is love. She had a boyfriend, but didn't hide from anyone that she liked girls too, something her family accepted quite naturally.
But the Madrigals was her family, you didn't know how yours would react.
"It's going to be okay, you're going to tell them and it's going to be okay..."
"Cariño, it's dinner time!"
You were suddenly startled when your mother yelled from the kitchen for you to leave your room for dinner.
Your eyes closed, which made two thick tears roll down her cheeks. You tried to be calm, while lifting your glasses and wiping away your tears, before taking a deep breath and walking out of your room.
During dinner, you stared at your plate of food, fingers drumming on the table as you tried to muster up enough courage to finally tell them.
"Mi amor, are you alright?" Your mother asked in a tone of consternation, before taking a bite of her salad.
"What?" You asked, lifting your head and not having understood what she said for being lost in your own thoughts.
"Nothing, I just asked what happened. I mean, you barely touched your food and it's your favorite." She explained.
"That is very strange, if I may say so, amor." Your father argued.
"Nothing happened, mamá, don't worry. It's just that..." You finally said, but felt yourself losing your nerve again in the middle of the sentence.
"What?" She asked after a brief silence, forcing you to keep talking even if you didn't want to.
"It's just..." You continued, trying to find a better way to speak. "The other day, I knew that Señora Gutiérrez's daughter has a girlfriend and..."
Before you even finished talking, your mother was soon interrupting you.
"Oh don't tell me dear, a girl as pretty as her, stooping to that slump." She said in a completely disgusted tone of voice, as she put some more food on her plate. "Also your friend Luisa, I heard that despite she have a boyfriend now, she does this nonsense too, I can only imagine how it was so easy for their parents to give them up. I'd NEVER let you follow the same example. You won't, right?"
You remained silent, shocked as every word of her hit you like a pile of heavy stones that hurt to your very soul. She didn't even want to listen to you.
"Mi hija, I talked to you." She said again, how you remained still and unresponsive. "Answer me!"
Seeing that your courage had been totally lost, you painfully denied it, slowly shaking your head from side to side. You no longer wanted to hide who you were from your parents, but you had no choice. The last thing you wanted was for your mother to hate you.
"Fine, but why did you bring up this subject just now?" She asked again.
"Nothing, it just... Popped into my head." You replied, quickly taking a spoonful of rice in your mouth to avoid talking further.
"You better get these subjects out of your head, okay?" She said, almost making you want to cry again, but by a miracle you managed to hold back.
At that moment, what you needed most was a hug and someone to tell you that everything was going to be fine, but not from just anyone: From your best friend since forever.
"I'm going to the Madrigals' house." You warned your mother, while she was doing the dishes' dinner.
"Okay, don't take too long to be back." She said, not looking away from what she was doing.
As you walked to your best friend's house, you took a breath to try to get rid of the uncomfortable feeling of a lump in your throat from suppressing your grief.
You softly knocked on the front door, patiently waiting for someone in her family or herself to open it for you. Not long after, the door opened, revealing that it was Doña Julieta, who already had a friendly smile on her lips to welcome whoever it was.
"Oh, good night dear." She said in a soft tone of voice.
"Good night, I hope I'm not bothering you guys right now."
"What? Of course not." She assured you, taking your hands in hers. Then, you were suddenly nervous when she started to look closely at your face. "Are you feeling okay?"
"Y-yeah, of course, why wouldn't I be?" You lied, trying to force a smile so she had no reason to be suspicious anymore.
"I don't know, you look a bit..."
"Is Luisa home?" You interrupted her with a question, to stop you two from continuing that conversation.
Normally you didn't do that, but you desperately needed to feel the warmth of Luisa's embrace.
"Yes she's in her room now, I don't know if she's sleeping but you can go there to see if you want." She said.
"OK, thank you." You thanked her and entered the house.
You walked upstairs, greeted some of her relatives you met along the way, until you finally arrived at her door.
Without hesitation, you turned the doorknob harder in your hand than you expected and opened the door. You found Luisa sat in front of her dressing table, combing her hair and trying on a ponytail.
You watched curiously, seeing how even prettier she looked with that new hairstyle. But soon you felt strange, feeling your heart pound for no apparent reason.
As soon as she noticed you standing there in the doorway of her room, she immediately dropped her hairbrush and ran to you, giving you a quick hug before starting to ask questions.
"So? How was it? Did you tell them? How did they react?" She asked, with remarkable enthusiasm. "Tell me everything."
You were about to vent with her, when you couldn't form coherent words as you couldn't hold back your tears, knowing you were finally in your safe haven. She was your safe haven.
"Oh gosh, I can already see it didn't go well." She said, soon leaning closer and wrapping her strong, warm arms around your smaller body in a now tight hug.
Even though you were going through something horrible at that point, you started to feel a little better, but not so much that it would make your anguish allay. You buried your head in her chest with glasses and everything and cried, cried everything you had to cry to see if that way you expel all your pain out.
"It's okay, I'm here with you and I'll always be here for you. Okay?" Luisa murmured in a low, but sweet voice as her hands caressed your back.
Seeing someone she loved so much so sad like that, it hurt deep in her soul.
"I'm so sorry, I couldn't, I wasn't brave enough, she told me all those horrible things, I didn't, I didn't..." You tried to say between loud sobs.
"Shhhhhhh it's okay, you don't need to say anything." Luisa said, pulling away from the hug and taking off your glasses, trying to wipe away the sea of tears that was gushing from your eyes.
She was so close, that even without the glasses you could clearly see her face.
Her eyes were so sad and it looked like any moment she would start crying too, as if your pain was her pain too.
"Unfortunately, not everyone will understand that we're happy the way we are mi amor, but everything will be fine. You can always be yourself with me and that'll never change. I love you."
Even though you were sad and desperate not knowing what to do, you couldn't help noticing when she called you "Mi amor". Being best friends, you two had a lot of affectionate nicknames for each other and that was definitely not one of them.
Confused, you looked up. Luisa continued to stare at you, making your eyes meet. You didn't understood why they now looked so mesmerizing. You soon completely forgot what you were going to ask when you felt her hand tenderly caress your cheek.
You instinctively leaned into her touch, it was so soft and warm.
"Maybe... This will help you be brave."
Before you could process what she had just said, you felt like your heart was almost leaping out of your mouth, when you saw your faces getting closer to each other.
You couldn't tell if Luisa or you were approaching, but for some reason when your eyes inadvertently looked to her lips, you completely lost track of what you were doing.
A desperate sigh left your lips at thr feeling of her breath on your face. With your eyes closed, you felt your mouth and hers met and your arms wrapped even more around her shoulders.
You kissed her, with all the passion for her that until that moment, you didn't know existed inside you, feeling a shiver invade you when the hand that she was holding your glasses wrapped around your waist and pulled you even closer.
Suddenly, your eyes widened as you realized what you were doing and quickly pulled away from her, pushing her away from yourself. You two looked at each other briefly, a deafening silence between the two of you, until you decided to say something.
"... Why did you do this to me? W-why did you kiss me???" You asked out loud, realizing how wrong you had just done was.
"But I didn't kiss you alone, it was the two of us." Luisa replied, trying to get closer, while you walked away with every step she took towards you. "You can't deny you wanted to too."
"B-but it's not possible, we're best friends since always, you have a boyfriend, his name is Fernando and my mom will kill me if she knows a thing about this!" You said getting more and more nervous, allowing her to approach just so you could take your glasses from her hands with a quick movement and then ran to her bedroom door.
"No, don't go away, please!" She asked, not doing anything to stop you, as she didn't like to force people into anything. "Stay. Let's talk."
"Please Luisa, I need some time alone to think about... Everything that just happened." You requested, almost begging, as you opened the door to leave.
She was hesitant for an instant, but agreed in the end.
"But don't forget one thing." She said, before you left, making you turn to listen to her again. "Your happiness doesn't depend on what people think about you, think about what you really want."
You nodded to her silently and left. As soon as you left her room, you ran as fast as you could out of the house, ignoring her mother, who asked what happened there when she saw you leaving in such a hurry.
You had hoped to find solace and a friendly shoulder to cry on when you found her. And you did found what you wanted, but you ended up leaving her house even more worried than before. That kiss was one of the most wrong things you two have ever done in your lives for any number of reasons.
But if it was, then... Why did it felt so right?
Luisa is the quartermaster (second-in-command) on the ship. She’s a carpenter by trade, which is why she carries a carpenter ax. She likes the practicality and the looks of both skirts and trousers, so she wears a divided skirt that can be transformed into trousers.
One of the reasons I love pirate stories is that they include disabled people as a matter of fact. In this AU, pretty much everyone is disabled. Luisa lost her arm in an accident when she was 13 and she rocks that hook. The Madrigals still have their gifts in this AU, so Luisa does a lot of the heavy lifting on the ship.
Encanto Pirate AU tag
[ID: two drawings (together on the first picture, separate on the next two) of Luisa from Encanto as a pirate. In the first, she’s wearing a purple skirt with a braided belt and a light pink blouse tied at the front with dark pink threads. She’s missing her lower left arm and has a hook prosthetic instead, which she shows off by flexing her muscles. The second picture is the same, but over her shirt she wears a loose vest, tied by a wide brown fabric belt, and her (divided) skirt is tied around her lower legs with leather gaiters. She has a carpenter ax hanging from her belt. End ID.]
I have (yeah I'm kind of stuck on this song it's great) been thinking about "Surface Pressure" from Encanto and the way the lyrics seem to hint that Luisa is dealing with more than she lets on to Mirabel, and more than the audience can see. Luisa's miraculous gift is great physical strength. That's her thing. We see her doing all kinds of heavy lifting and carrying, wrangling livestock, and we hear her nonchalantly agreeing to re-route a river. That's a lot of work, and she has to have quite an understanding of engineering and practical (cartoon) physics to be able to do things like relocate a church and straighten up a leaning house so quickly and precisely, so she's certainly not just a beast of burden. That's all the work we see her doing, though, lifting and carrying, moving things around, and the opening verse of her song focuses on her ability to do that kind of work and her pride in it. The following lyrics, on the other hand, are full of images of conflict and danger - the second one is "Did Hercules ever say, 'Yo, I don't wanna fight Cerberus?'" and in the second "under the surface" verse she says "I hide my nerves, and it worsens, I worry something is gonna hurt us," and imagines a ship like the Titanic carrying on unstoppably towards an iceberg that she has to smash. That's well beyond anything we see Luisa actually have to do, and given that the encanto has been completely surrounded by protective mountains for thirty-odd years before she was born (Luisa's 19 and the miracle was 50 years ago), she has presumably never had to face any such danger. Isn't it interesting that she picks a labour of Hercules that involved fighting a wild beast (whose name more or less rhymes with "surface" and "service," so yeah there's a lyrically practical reason why it's this one) and not one that's more in her wheelhouse, like cleansing the Augean stables, which also involved redirecting a river? Should we infer from all this that Luisa knows more than Mirabel knew about the violence that her grandparents fled from and that took Abuelo Pedro from the family? Does Luisa fear that one day enemies like that will reach the encanto and she'll be the one person who can defend the community from them - that her physical strength will obligate her to fight? Has Abuela Alma been telling her that, maybe ever since her gift manifested, thinking she's doing the right thing by preparing her for that day? Because yikes. Her sense of pressure and danger certainly seems to come from far more than being expected to move the piano, and like it would take more to assuage it than allowing herself to take hammock breaks and relax.
A note on some side-characters in the encanto:
45. Insistente
(adj) insistent
She answers to the name Diana. Her actual name is a lot more complicated than that. Her people, and her philosophical school, go in for deep cogitation and that includes long and subliminally-consequential names. But Diana is as good a collection of syllables as any.
Diana is not entirely sure why the Lady bears her on her back when she is more than capable of walking on her own. It’s a little frustrating sometimes, really. She occasionally protests vociferously and would maybe bite if she weren’t a grown adult with a reputation to uphold, but she can't blame the Lady, really. The Lady’s mind is filled with Focus and Strength and Pressure. Rather like a child. (For one of her kind, she probably is one.) She wants to be like them. She understands the Onus of Aptitude—the fundamental requirement of being steadfast in one’s duty, once one has deemed said duty worthy of one’s time. But she is surprisingly isolated, as though her work is the only thing important in life, and not the choice thereof. (Diana’s thesis on the Didacticism of Informed Obligation in the Context of Recompense versus Castigation was very well received.)
Diana tries to communicate, as do her colleagues (her coworker who answers to Abram has for some time now been trying to interest her in the Metaphysics of Non-Agricultural Floral Classification, a highly stimulating and eminently practical area of research), but the Lady’s mind is as stubborn as theirs. Likely she could hear them if she just twitched a teeny tiny bit, but she won’t let herself be distracted. The poor creature is obviously suffering from a severe psychological imbalance caused by an excess of Hypertrophied Physio-Sensibility. The only known cure is patience.
Fortunately, patience is something that Donkeys have quite a lot of.
55. Truchimán
(nm) interpreter
"They talk funny," says Antonio. "Well, not funny. A bit more grown-up than most of the other animals."
Luisa blinks. (She does that a lot around her primitos.) "Grown-up how?"
"Um…well, that one—his name's Marco—asked if you had something to eat recently. They're worried about you doing too much. But they're strange words, it's like they're kind of dusty and layered. Like they've been passed around a lot before being said." Antonio rubs his head. "I don't know if this is making any sense."
Luisa smiles, and ruffles his hair. "It's the encanto, cuz. It doesn't always have to make sense." She looks at the donkeys. "Hey, if you guys are worried that I'm working too hard, why do you always try to escape?"
"…prima Luisa, what does 'disjunction introduction in the application of para-consistent logic to conventional exigencies' mean?"
"It means we need ask your mom if we can borrow her dictionary."
79. Reposar
(v) rest, relax; 3rd plural present indicative reposan
Luisa has always thought of herself as stronger than diamond. Under pressure, yes, but tougher. Perhaps that’s vanity, but with her job she’s allowed a little vanity in the privacy of her own head.
Now, though... now she’s content to be a little softer than diamonds.
She can carry pianos, full of complicated pieces that should fall apart when she lifts them up. She can carry bridges, stone bridges with hundreds of heavy pieces. And she can carry a loaf of bread, or a tiny thimble for Mirabel, or one of Isabela’s flowers. And none of them break, because they are whole.
So maybe, sometimes, being whole isn’t a matter of remaining whole no matter what. Maybe, sometimes, it’s remaining whole because you’re at rest and aren’t being crushed.
So taking a short break in a hammock, reading a dictionary and chatting with Antonio (and through Antonio with the donkey called Sebastian, whom Cecilio isn’t using at the moment and whose Theory of Temporal Relativity Correlated with Existential Progression is the reason she has the dictionary out), might not be what the doctor or even Má ordered. But it’s what Luisa needs.
To keep feeling whole.
Hello! Could I get an Encanto Matchup please?
I'm an adult, and I'm Bisexual and Genderfluid. I usually identify as female but I dress masculinely most of the time too. I have Autism. I’m a metalsmith and a writer, and I usually try to break the ice in relationships by giving gifts like metal roses. I’m very much a jack of all trades because I’m constantly wanting to try out new skills. I feel best when I’m being physical, so I like manual labor, metalsmithing and am even considering learning how to fix cars and motorcycles. If I lived in Encanto I'd probably be a foreigner who moves there and started a jewelry and mechanics store.
I’m like 4’ 10” and while my body is shaped like a rectangle I’m pretty strong. I have messy wavy brown hair and glasses, and my favorite thing to wear is a denim jacket with patterned fleece sleeves. I’m surprisingly strong, my family sometimes gives me heavy objects to carry as a joke but are super surprised when I lift them anyways.
I’m really interested in cryptozoology. Much like Bruno, I’m pretty superstitious and have a habit of knocking on wood and pacing. I’ve got some crazy stories and really like to ramble. I have friends everywhere even if I act like a loner sometimes (Fun fact, I'm friends with a local biker gang back home!!) I love explaining things and getting into weird conversations.
Thanks so much, I hope this isn't too much! Keep being awesome!!
Your match is..
Luisa!!
Tumblr media
Whenever things get overwhelming for her and way too many people start asking for help, she usually asks you to tag along.
She mainly does this so she has someone there with her because it just makes her feel way better
But you do end up helping as much as you can, obviously you cant reroute a river but because youre pretty strong, youre still able to help out with smaller tasks, which takes a lot of weight off of Luisas shoulders
Sometimes she'll ask you to make her weight equipment, but shes usually very shy about it and tries not to ask for things often, knowing how draining it can be
When she has time, she loves sitting down with you and just talking, she loves hearing you talk about anything and everything
She doesnt underestimate your strength, and cautions others not to either
Somehow always manages to keep up with your new hobbies
Shes usually the one to inform you of local legends and creatures you might wanna look into
She loves reading anything you write
Luisa also gets super emotional whenever you give her gifts
"Ay amor! You didnt have to get me anything, thank you so much!!"
Tears. Lots of tears. Happy tears
Also hugs, you can expect just random hugs throughout the day
Workout buddies 100%
Thank you so much for the request!! (Sorry it took me a while to get to it) I had a lot of fun writing this, hope you enjoyed and remember to take care of yourself <3
I enjoyed Encanto a lot but I always see that there’s a common criticism about how it felt anticlimactic towards the end. Which I kind of understand. I think some people also thought it should have established and explored the family dynamics further, and the rules of the magic (like the fact that there’s no candle at the end anymore lol???), and that while the premise is interesting the execution could have been better. For me I loved it because I relate to it sooo much culturally and due to that it felt extra special to me for a Disney movie, but my only gripe was that it was too short. There should have been more in my opinion.
However I’m curious to see what your criticisms are!! :)
OK so disclaimer: it’s like 4 am, I’m on my way to bed so if certain things don’t make sense or it gets repetitive or I didn’t finish a thought it’s because I’m tired and I’ll get back to it when I wake up.
But it's funny, I've been seeing this gripe a lot "It was too short" or "It should be longer", I saw that for episodes of this season of Euphoria and I saw that consistently with Insecure and I don't think the problem is length, the problem is what's being done in the time allotted (which isn't much or it's too much that it's actually not much). Encanto is 17 minutes shy of being 2 hours, that's not a short movie. It's standard. I think the reason why you want more is because we didn't get much with what we had in that hour and 42 minutes.
Because the issue is that we didn't get to know the family members and their dynamics enough. So for me it stays at, well this was an interesting idea and not, holy shit what an amazing movie. Because, when Luisa sings her song about how she does the heavy lifting, she does everything she's told and she doesn't complain but inside she's a mess and she's worried that if she isn't constantly functional she's useless, I was like, but when do we see this?
There's that episode in SPN where we see things from Bobby's perspective and all he wants to do is sit down and eat a piece of pie but he can never do it because the phone keeps ringing and he has to keep answering because he has to do his job. I needed a scene like that with Luisa. I needed her to sit down and rest and then right when it looks like she can rest, she gets up and does more work because she feels guilty. Like
Tumblr media
this was 30 minutes into the movie. When did we see this?
Same issue with Isa and her song and the stress of having to be perfect all the time and uniform all the time, we never see that until we get her song:
Tumblr media
this was an hour and nine minutes into the movie and there was no inkling of this beforehand so this song is not going to mean anything to me.
Like even if it's from Mirabel's perspective, we could've had a scene where Isa creates a bouquet or whatever and she's scrutinizing it and everyone is telling how pretty it is and how perfect it is and she's like "oh no, I can do better" which Mirabel takes as humble bragging only for the song to reveal the pressure she's under to always be one way.
Like, with Hercules, we have the opening where the songs explain the plot and we see Hades' scheme and how Hercules gets to Earth and is raised by humans but then we also see him as a teenager destroying everything around him then he gets his song about not belonging and wanting something more.
The songs annoyed me because they're like the Euphoria voiceover where instead of spending time on building family dynamics, they just gave the different sisters songs. The songs should be propelling plot forward and giving insight.
Hakuna Mata matters because it's a song about forgetting responsibilities and all of your problems
Tumblr media
and it's in the right part of the movie because we have already seen exactly why that philosophy would appeal to Simba who witnessed his father get murdered and who, because of his uncle, thinks it's his fault
Tumblr media
and then there’s the transition to adulthood which indicates this is how Simba had been living his life
Tumblr media
which then sets up his arc and when he runs into Nala and when he sees Mufasa in the clouds.
Tumblr media
It's functional and it's emotional and it's placed properly. It's way too late for me to get Isa's song when I don't know anything about her, I feel like I'm just getting introduced to her rather than understanding her better.
And when Abuela yells about how Mirabela is ruining everything and then Mirabela yells back that none of them are ever good enough, I was like, besides Mirabela, sort of, we don't see this AT ALL. Like yeah Abuela says we give back to the miracle with our gifts, we serve the community, it's what we're proud to do but we don't see her interact with her family members for this pivotal blow up to be as emotional as it should be.
Her talking about the miracle all the time is supposed to be this pressure, it’s supposed to be her drilling into their heads that their worth is associated with what they can provide but again, that's not something I actually saw, this is something I extrapolated.
I hate to use this example because it’s Junot Diaz but The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao is about intergenerational trauma in its many, many forms and this kind of sentiment is what I was supposed to be seeing
“You don’t know the hold our mothers have on us, even the ones that are never around—especially the ones that are never around. What it's like to be the perfect Dominican daughter, which is just a nice way of saying a perfect Dominican slave.”
“ And that's when it hit with the force of a hurricane. The feeling. I stood straight up, the way my mother always wanted me to stand up. My abuela was sitting there, forlorn, trying to cobble together the right words and I could not move or breathe. I felt like I always did at the last seconds of a race, when I was sure that I was going to explode. She was about to say something and I was waiting for whatever she was going to tell me. I was waiting to begin.”
but we never did.
The best portrayal is actually with Bruno
Tumblr media
and this
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Like, I feel like there's a difference between resonating with something you see onscreen and relating to an idea. Instead of watching different relationships play out or seeing different behaviours, namely Abuela’s, and going, YES, THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT IT’S LIKE, YES SHE’S ACTING JUST LIKE MY GRANDMOTHER, it’s listening to explanations that you (the universal ‘you’) relate to without doing the work of actually portraying the themes, like just because it’s in song and just because it’s a Disney movie doesn’t mean that it’s not just an exposition dump with very pretty visuals and no narrative action.
I've mentioned a few times, the scene in Tangled where Rapunzel goes through the various emotions of leaving home against Mother Gothel's explicit rules where she goes from ecstatic to guilty and back again hit me in the chest HARD because it actually portrayed something I could relate to, it portrayed the relationship between her and Mother Gothel
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
so that when we get here, to the scene that got me
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It makes absolute sense, it’s earned through what we saw. I resonated with it because I saw it play out and was like, holy shit that’s loud.
Encanto was a movie of what we should’ve seen.
At the end is when we see dynamics we should’ve seen at the beginning like Luisa and Isa standing by their doors and standing up straight when Abuela walked past.
And then when Mirabel is supposed to understand her grandmother’s trauma and therefore understand her grandmother more and see the entire situation from a different perspective and see what she had to go through and why she’s so tough on everyone --- which is absolutely a theme I could resonate with --- because we haven’t seen Abuela do this and be this way (the most we see is being distant with Mirabel and telling her to stay out of the way during Antonio’s ceremony) it wasn’t as cathartic as it should’ve been. It was more like an intellectual exercise.
And then the magic and the rules...
OK so the candle disappeared because it became magic and created Encanto due to Abuela’s pain over Pedro’s sacrifice so basically at the heart of the house and therefore of the family was Abuela’s pain, the new life was created due to her suffering and that created something beautiful but it was also supposed to be affecting everyone in the family i.e. intergenerational trauma but because everything happens at the end and very quickly and the rules of the magic in general were nonexistent --- the house was falling apart but still managed to help them?? --- Dolores can hear everything including rats so she can understand animals that’s not just Antonio? Only Mirabela’s mother who heals people through food (obvious metaphor, lmao) and Luisa seem to have gifts that help the people of Encanto, like how does shapeshifting help anyone? ---the significance of the candle was muddled and bungled.
All in all I thought it was a pretty movie visually and that’s it. I wanted to like it, I saw a lot of potential for what it could be but I was just underwhelmed and I mean initumseries warned me.
