Drawlloween 2023 so far…

So each year for the month of Ocotber i take part in a drawing prompt list called Mabs Drawlloween! Its focused on spooky/folklore promptd and its usually my favourite time of year for creativity! I find the prompts push my creativity and have helped create some of my best designs over the years! This year is my 5th year doing it and while its been a struggle so far as i’ve been in a creative rut for the last few months, i feel happy with some of the creations i’ve made so far! Figured i’d share them, so heres the creations for the prompts of witch, werecat, botanical beasts and faerie! Faerie / Drawlloween 2023

I've been following @mabgravesart Drawlloween club over on instagram since it started, and it's such an inspiring place to discover new artists and look at unique illustrations. I'm shy when it comes to interacting with others, and I mostly just like&run 😅 still, I somehow wanted to add my little contribution to the event, so I picked the prompt for Day7 - Faerie, but gave it a Romanian folklore twist, and depicted a Sânziană, our version of faerie. She's also wearing traditional Romanian clothes, from the region of Banat, where I was born.

I think this is my favorite piece of Inktober I've done this year. Working with markers is so much fun, and I discovered how much I love to mix black fineliners with red pencils.

I’ve been meaning to work on scenes for a while and thought this drawing challenge season would be a good excuse! Got bogged down in the detail on this one a little I think and managed to make it really difficult for myself (some of it is so small!) but pretty pleased with the result! I’m going to do a limited run of 30 of them over on my shops so grab one if you like!

Mab’s Drawlloween Day 12: Toad

My favourite toad is the Fowler’s toad (Anaxyrus fowleri), a little poisonous toad native to eastern North America. According to field guides and conservationists it’s not supposed to be in Ontario past Lake Erie, but I see it all the time in the Ottawa Valley. A lot of critters (and plants and fungi) are moving up here due to climate change and habitat encroachment.

I don’t just love toads because they’re poisonous, I love them because they are perfect. They haven’t needed to evolve in millions of years. They are “sit and wait” hunters, similar to spiders that are ambush predators. They just chill in the dirt and dead leaves and wait for food to come to them. Their whole life is “just bugs”. The creators of “work smarter, not harder”. They have a lot to teach us about patience, strategy, playing dumb, and doing well despite being lazy. Role model material, honestly.
