MerMay 2023 Day Eight Fixer Upper
Jack was a fool.
He knew that Anti was dangerous, and yet he was okay with talking to him, letting him get close, having him roam free so close to Jack’s own living space. It was foolish behavior. Anti couldn’t understand how a merm like that had survived for so long in this world.
And yet... he... liked Jack’s foolish behavior. He... what was the word? He was... thankful for it. He didn’t want to be. But that didn’t change his feelings.
Jack’s friends were fools, too. Perhaps they were even bigger fools. At least Jack had the excuse of not remembering most of what Anti did. They didn’t. And yet, they had gone to such lengths to rescue him from those humans and their see-through containers of water. Twice. Teaming up with other humans to do so. When it would have been so much better for them all if Anti had died in those places.
The part about teaming up with other humans also confused him. He knew that Chase had halfling children, so it made sense that this group of merms knew humans somehow. But... it seemed strange to him that humans would choose merms over their own kind. Merms fought each other all the time, Anti knew that, but humans had always seemed more... together than merms. They worked together. They lived in large communities. They traveled in groups. They hunted in groups. Wouldn’t it make sense for all humans to be the same? It was confusing that they weren’t.
Anti was confused a lot of the time now.
But at least he wasn’t wandering around the ocean anymore. The shipwreck that Jack had led him to was a fine place to stay. He liked its foreboding outside appearance and the shadows of its insides. He never knew human ships could look like this. It was so much bigger than the boats he’d seen before. Though, most of the boats he’d seen before had been built to float on rivers. There was no space for them to be this large.
He decided he would sleep in the middle of the ship. Specifically, in a small room attached to a large, empty room. The small room had only one way in: through the empty rectangle opening where a door would’ve been once. Any human furniture or trinkets had long since disappeared, either rotted away or taken by other merms. Anti could fill up the empty space however he wanted.
What... were you supposed to put... in the place you lived? Anti tried to remember what other merms had in their living spaces, the few times he’d seen those spaces. Jack had a whole bunch of stuff in his little rock pool off the lagoon. Tools? Did you keep tools in here? Or weapons? Clothes or jewelry? What about neat rocks?
Whatever the case was, Anti didn’t have any of that stuff. And for the first time in a while, he was sad that he didn’t. Keeping stuff just made it hard to move around. Packing would just slow you down if you had to leave quickly. But... maybe he didn’t have to leave the shipwreck. Jack was a fool, but if that foolishness meant he wouldn’t chase Anti off—not that he could. Anti knew he was much stronger than him. But Jack could’ve brought his friends for help, and—despite how much Anti didn’t want to admit it—he wasn’t stronger than all of them together.
He was getting off track. A good chunk of time must have passed with Anti swimming circles in the shipwrecked room, thinking to himself. The point was, he wanted stuff to keep. Stuff that would be his. Stuff that would fill up the empty space that currently reminded him of being inside the humans’ see-through containers.
He poked his head through an open grate on the top of the ship—which came out to be the side of the wreck, now that it was laying down. For a moment, he got distracted opening and closing it, examining the rusted mechanism that let it do that. Even though humans clearly wanted to hunt down merms, he had to admire their... What was the word? Genius, or something like that. They were smart. Even if humans were dangerous, their stuff was kind of cool.
Perhaps... there would be more human stuff out here. Perhaps that stuff could then be his stuff. Anti grinned to himself. Yes, he liked that idea. Take that, humans.
It would be dangerous to go searching. But he could do it. He’d survived this long, he would keep surviving at any cost.
Well... maybe not at any cost. Not anymore. Trying to eliminate Jack and his friends had backfired on him. He wouldn’t be trying that again. Besides... he still owed them for rescuing him the last time. He needed some way to even the scores between them.
The water was starting to get dark. Perfect time to head out. Maybe, on his quest for finding stuff, he could figure out some way to break even with Jack and the others.

About that SJ Mermay au! (Which, if it isnt too much of a hassle, you should totally write about 👀) But what would the AU look like? Are tgere any differences from the original Sleuth Jesters storyline or worldbuilding?
Basically, it's all shoved into the ocean, but there aren't official laws and the main four characters are doing things very much of their own volition and desires, but it's the same vibes to Sleuth Jesters! Everyone's a mer, including Y/N.
Lil snippet because Eclipse can be worse :)

Hi there!! From the mermaid game can I please get 3, 5, and 6? Thanks!
Hi Mythixmagic! Of course! Funny enough, I’ve written a snippet with my yandere OC, Kai, that has this exact scenario, you can find it here. Thanks for requesting this, here you go!
From this ask game
Also, big thanks to @thepenultimateword for helping me come up with ideas for this snippet!
Whumpee climbed aboard the ship with Caretaker and the rest of the crew. Caretaker led Whumpee to the treasure chest they and the crew had found in the sea cave. Being Caretaker’s first mate, Whumpee always got first pick of the treasure. Caretaker opened the lid of the chest and glittering jewels and piles of gold met Whumpee’s eyes.
“See anything you like, Whumpee?” Caretaker asked.
Whumpee reached their hand out to a clamshell-shaped crystal. They held it in their hands and admired how it sparkled in the sunlight.
“Can I have this?” Whumpee asked.
Caretaker laughed, clapping Whumpee on the shoulder.
“Of course, silly, what do you think first mate privileges are for? Is that all you want?”
Whumpee nodded, smiling. Caretaker turned to the rest of the crew.
“Alright everyone, take your pick!”
The rest of the pirates scrambled up to the treasure chest, each person taking their pick from it. Whumpee gazed at their new trinket. The longer they held it though, the more weak they started to feel. Whumpee’s knees buckled. Unfortunately, this happened right at the ship’s railing. Whumpee fell over the side and plunged into the water below… right where the ship’s fishing net had been lowered.
“Whumpee!” Caretaker shouted.
Whumpee couldn’t hear Caretaker, or the rest of the crew. Right now their entire body exploded in pain as a transformation began to take place. Their legs fused together into a tail, and little scales spread sparsely across their skin. Their ears became webbed, and their neck grew gills. Whumpee tried to swim back up to the surface, but they had gotten quite tangled in the fishing net. Whumpee thrashed and struggled, which only served to make things worse. By the time Whumpee stopped, they could barely move at all.
Whumpee looked up as the surface came closer and closer. Someone was hauling the net up. The crew pulled Whumpee on deck while Caretaker knelt down beside them, pulling out a small knife. Caretaker gasped at what they saw.
“Whumpee…”
“Is it bad?” Whumpee asked.
Caretaker paused. They started cutting Whumpee free while the crew watched.
“Caretaker, is it bad?” Whumpee repeated.
“Uh, well, you know,” Caretaker stammered, “it’s not great, but it isn’t horrible…”
Caretaker finished cutting Whumpee loose. Their mer tail was out in the open for everyone to see now. The crew stared and gawked.
“Whumpee,” one of them said.
“What in Poseidon’s name-”
“I knew we shouldn’t have gone into that sea cave.”
“Is it bad luck to have merfolk aboard?”
“Alright, alright, that’s enough!” Caretaker shouted.
Caretaker swept Whumpee up into a bridal carry. Whumpee’s cheeks reddened in embarrassment. They buried their face into Caretaker’s chest to avoid the crew’s stares.
“Everyone get back to work while I get to the bottom of this,” Caretaker ordered, “and don’t touch that chest. Who knows what else in there is cursed.”
Caretaker brought Whumpee into their cabin and laid them down on the bed.
“Caretaker, what’s happening? How do we fix this?”
“I’m thinking, I’m thinking,” Caretaker said, pacing back and forth.
Whumpee took a blanket and started drying themselves off. When the last drop of water had been dried, their tail severed into a pair of legs once again, and their ears and skin went back to normal.
“Well, that was easy,” Whumpee said.
“Don’t be so sure, Whumpee,” Caretaker said, “I think you touched a siren’s crystal. They’re known to be cursed. I’d wager if you got wet again, your fins would come right back.”
“You don’t know that-”
The cabin boy came running in.
“Chef said to bring you this,” he said, “and- oh!”
In his haste to bring it to Whumpee, the cabin boy spilled a cup of water all over them. Whumpee immediately turned back into a merperson.
“Oh gosh, I’m sorry- I didn’t mean to-”
“It’s alright, just go,” Caretaker said.
The cabin boy nodded and scurried out of the room. Caretaker turned to Whumpee, who had tears in their eyes.
“Whumpee, don’t cry,” Caretaker said, “we can work through this-”
“How!?” Whumpee sobbed, “I live on a ship, surrounded by water! There’s no way to avoid getting wet here!”
“We’ll just have to find a cure then,” Caretaker said.
“What?”
“You heard me,” Caretaker said, “we’re going to scour the seas until we find a way to fix this.”
“What about the crew?” Whumpee asked, “surely they won’t want to drop everything just for this.”
Caretaker smiled knowingly.
“Why don’t we ask them what they think then?”
Caretaker carried Whumpee on deck.
“Everyone!” Caretaker called, “how do you feel about finding a cure to Whumpee’s fin fiasco?”
The crew erupted in cheers and words of encouragement.
“Then back to work, all of you! We’re getting to the bottom of this if it means sailing past the edge of the world!”
The crew cheered again, then went back to their respective tasks.
“Ha, and you were worried,” Caretaker said, bringing Whumpee back into their cabin, “everyone here cares about you, Whumpee. What do you think loyalty means?”
Whumpee smiled at Caretaker. Loyalty… just one of the many benefits of being Caretaker’s first mate.

The Night We Met - Trails of Stardust
Wei Wuxian crossed his arms over the starboard side of Lan Wangji’s boat, smiling at the shimmers of moonlit water licking the sides of the boat as they drifted along. He shivered a bit and rubbed his arms, and at that moment Lan Wangji came to his side with a rudimentary blanket they picked up on a supply stop at one of the harbors.
“Thank you, Lan Zhan.” Wei Wuxian smiled and cuddled up to the man’s side as he joined him on the deck.
“Mn.” Lan Wangji wrapped an arm around the merman, gently guiding him to his side. Lan Wangji was always so warm, Wei Wuxian loved it. Thankfully, Lan Wangji had also gotten a bit more used to the close contact the other craved over the past year or so. “Better?”
Wei Wuxian beamed, “The best.” He leaned into the other’s shoulder and looked up into the sky, a contented smile on his face. “The sky is beautiful tonight, don’t you think?” He gasped though, bringing the man’s attention to the sky as well. “Shooting stars! My favorite!”
When the merman quickly closed his eyes however, Lan Wangji tilted his head slightly in confusion. “Don’t you want to see them then-?”
“Shh!” Wei Wuxian was quiet for a moment longer after he had bapped the other gently in response, then opened his eyes again with a big grin. “I was making a wish!”
Lan Wangji smiled subtly and his eyelashes lowered, keeping his attention on the other’s crystal eyes rather than the stars. “What do you wish for?”
“But if I tell you, it won’t come true.” Wei Wuxian pouted, booping his nose up against the other’s jawline.
“Ask me.”
“Huh?”
“Ask me and if it is anything I can give you, see if I will deny you.”
Wei Wuxian felt his heart pick up, the warm rosy hues in his cheeks giving Lan Wangji the softest heart palpitations in return. “Anything?”
“Anything.” Lan Wangji brought the other’s hand to his chest, gently squeezing his hand.
“I wished that you would finally ask me to be yours.” Wei Wuxian spoke quietly, so quietly that Lan Wangji wasn’t sure he heard it right.
“Mine?”
“Yours.”
Lan Wangji swallowed quietly and ran his fingers into the other’s fringe, gently tangling them into the hair at the base of the other’s head. “Then please…be mine.”
Wei Wuxian met the other’s lips with fervor, wrapping his arms around the other’s neck to bring him so close it was like they were one.
“Yes, yes please.” Wei Wuxian answered softly, breathlessly as they indulged kiss after kiss, trails of stardust not able to steal their gazes away from each other.

Sneak Peak of Chapter 4 of Death Lies in Wait. 🧜
Come with me, he says again. It says. For this can’t be a man, but some creature of the sea. A succubus. Its kiss tastes like salt and brine and its skin is slippery and cold, making Mike shiver. Its fingers slip to the back of his neck, tangle in his waves, and his cap falls off his head as the creature shifts upwards in one strong, smooth motion. With one hand in his hair and the other pushing against his chest, Mike falls backwards onto his back against the rock. He throws his hands up in slack defense, eyes going wide and staring as the creature is atop him, its full weight quite heavy. Its. His. For maybe it’s a version of a man after all? His black-green eyes go wide and questioning again and his fingers are threading through the salt-soaked tendrils of Mike’s hair. He lifts up a long curl and examines it with serious interest. He rubs it curiously between thumb and forefinger, and Mike notices the translucent webbing between his fingers. Mike lowers his hands experimentally along the strange man’s arms, gently fluttering over his wet skin.
His brows go together again as he rakes his slippery fingers over Mike's face, along his cheekbone and down the length of his nose, fluttering over his eyelashes and across his bottom lip. He lifts his shin and slides his hand down his neck, briefly stopping along his pulsepoint. He can feel the pressure there and watches his eyes widen as he feels it. He lowers himself a bit further down Mike’s body and presses his finned ear to his chest. Listening. For a long moment he rests there and then lifts his head again, fingers pulling at the twine around his neck and holding up the ring to the light. He studies it for a long second and then continues down his torso, eyeing each button, the stitching along the pocket of his coat. He shifts his body and that’s when Mike sees it. He hasn’t got legs. This “man” isn’t a man at all. But a fish? He has a tail, gold and green and purple scales shine like pearls in the sun. His translucent fins at the end shift in the air as he turns it up into a curled position.
Mike just sits there, unable to move. He breathes out a heavy, nervous breath, whatever protest he wants to say caught somewhere in his throat. The creature’s cold hands dig into his vest pocket and pull out his pocket watch, pulling it up and staring at it like a child inspecting a worm from the garden. He turns it over and then brings it to his mouth and bites down on it. Mike’s gaze catches on how some of his teeth are pointed. Like fangs. He gnaws on the gold watch and makes a face as if offended, obviously disliking the taste. Suddenly uninterested in the object, he tosses it flippantly back onto Mike’s belly and turns his attention elsewhere. His fingers continue to roam over his body, making Mike squirm and shake. Mike presses his lips together and hisses as the creature shoves Mike’s coat up his waist and looks at his belly curiously. His hands sliding along his hips and over the taught skin below his belly button. His sharp nails scrape through his thin patch of hair there and then suddenly hook onto the hem of his pants. He lifts it up and peeks down where he’s hidden in darkness. And then, as if losing patience with the fabric, shifts his body further down and tugs. He’s pulling at the waist of his pants with a surprising strength and Mike shudders and calls out when he realizes his intentions. “Woah, woah, woah!” he breathes, springing urgently to a sitting position and pushing him roughly off of him.
The creature slides back onto the wet rock, blinking and shaking his head a little as if stunned, gazing at him with affronted curiosity.
They sit there a moment, out of breath and staring at each other before Mike can hear his voice in his head again. Clear and strong and very much not his own.
Michael? he asks.
Mike stares at him and creases his brow deeply. “Yes?” he breathes.
The creature slides closer, his movements quick and smooth and Mike can’t breathe as he’s upon him again, face so close he can feel the iciness of his skin stealing his body heat.
His brow lowers in determination and he presses his hand roughly to Mike’s chest.
You..Michael? He asks again in a whisper floating through Mike’s mind. Then he brings his own hand back to his bare chest.
Willem.
Presses his hand back to Mike’s, Michael.
And then back on his own. Willem.
Mike sighs out when he realizes what he’s trying to tell him. His name.
“Willem?” Mike whispers, watching as he sits back and gazes at him in utter surprise, as if he hadn’t been expecting Mike to hear him.
“Willem,” Mike repeats, lifting his eyebrows in suggestion.
The creature presses his lips together and then to Mike’s astonishment, nods in agreement. He brings his hand to his chest again.
Willem. His timid voice is as clear as day inside Mike’s mind. The strange creature from the sea, frightening and strange and cold, not only knows his name already, but is trying to communicate with him…

Last line challenge
Rules: Make a new post and post the latest line in your WIP & tag as many people as there are words (or as many as you feel like).
tip o’ the hat to @shootingstarpilot for the tag.  gently paying it forward to @kcrabb88, @oathkeeperoxas, @yukipri, and @esamastation.
here, have a bit of my windix mermay wip:
Stitch sighs unhappily.  “Needle looks awful.  He's very dehydrated, and I'm worried about shock.  I wish we had a saline drip, at least.” There's a rustling sound as he adjusts the emergency blankets where they're draped over Needle.  “My ankle is worse than it was yesterday, but we expected that.  I'll manage.  How is your head?”
“Fels like somebody parked a heavy cruiser on it.”  Every bruise and scrape Helix wasn't feeling right after the ship went down has come for revenge, too.  “Prop your foot up on the raft wall.  Might help the swelling.”
“I will in a little while.  I want to check your eyes.”
“Soon as I can get them open without puking, kiddo.”

Snippet for my Nessian Mermay fic, it’ll have at least 2 parts, hopefully no more than 3...
The cabin boy stared out over the black sea as the gentle beat of waves lapped the hull of the ship. A cool breeze rolled through the sails causing the canvas to whap and the rigging to beat together.  They weren’t due for a storm for at least another day or two, but with the was the wind continued in its relentless assault, the boy wasn’t so sure.
Or he could have just been annoyed at the weather in general.  His thick, messy hair whipped around his face even after several attempts at tying it back with a strap of leather just as Suriel had taught him. He apparently hadn’t done that good of a job—even the barest of movements has pulled the locks free.  The wind didn’t help.
He should have been below deck with the other cabin boys, but he’d gotten into trouble.  Again.
So, here he was, standing on deck in the darkness of the growing night.

MerMay 2023 Day Two Have You Seen Them?
“I have to know if you have ever seen this symbol before.” Schneep reached into his bag and took out a small, human-made patch, placing it on the table coral in front of him. On the other side of the flat, brown coral sat Vea Mira, her tentacles curled around her, half in camouflage mode. “This is very important,” he said, staring at her.
Vea looked up at him. “Yeah, I’ve seen it. I’ve told you before that I’ve seen it.”
“You have?” Schneep said, surprised.
“Yeah. You had a drawing of it on a wall in your cave. Remember? That time I hit my head?” Vea tapped the patch. “It’s definitely the same symbol.”
“...ah.” Schneep’s tentacles slowly turned an embarrassed dark green. Here he’d gone to all the trouble to invite Vea to his reef to ask her about this, when she’d already seen the symbol. “Well, ah... say I do not remember what you said about it.”
Vea laughed. “You’re the smartest and dumbest merm I’ve ever met, Schneeple.”
Schneep bristled, tentacles shifting from dark green to dark blue. “What is that supposed to mean?”
“Nothing. It’s just that... well, you went all the way to my shipwreck to drag me back here, and you had the symbol in your bag the whole time.” Vea stretched her tentacles, which returned to their normal off-white color. “You could have asked me this while we were there instead of taking me here.”
“I... like my reef,” Schneep said slowly.
To be honest, taking Vea back to the reef had been a sort of peace offering. He still remembered how they’d gotten off on the wrong fin the first time they’d met, and it ended up in him kicking her out of the reef entirely. Leaving him the only merm living in the large area, which was easily big enough for the both of them. But he didn’t... dislike Vea. Not anymore. Not once she’d apologized and made it clear the whole thing was a misunderstanding. So there was no reason she shouldn’t be allowed in, especially since other merms visited all the time, either for healing or for hanging out.
“I’m not judging,” Vea said, raising her hands. She glanced back down at the patch. It was starting to float upwards, so she reached down and pushed it back onto the table coral, putting a small rock on top to weigh it down. “It’s a human symbol, right?”
“Right.” Schneep nodded.
“Well, I saw it on a lot of boats back in the tropics. Humans put all sorts of symbols on their boats, and you learn to figure them out. I think this one belongs to some sort of group.”
“It does,” Schneep confirmed. “Me and my friends have been... dealing with this group.” And he had dealt with them a long time ago. He still didn’t like thinking about that time period.
Vea frowned. “Well, there were more and more boats back home with this symbol. Going everywhere. Looking at everything. There were more and more boats in general, of course, but you understand what I mean. It’s why a lot of merms are leaving the tropics. They feel forced out.”
“I am sorry,” Schneep said quietly.
“It is fine. For me, I mean. I’ve always wanted to see more of the ocean.” Vea flashed a smile. “So? What’s the deal with the group, then?”
Schneep sighed, gills fluttering. “They are a human group called TridentCorp. And they know about merms.”
Vea’s smile disappeared. “H-huh?”
“They know about us, and they are looking for us.” Schneep folded his arms. “They have already taken some of my friends. We rescued them all, but TridentCorp has not quit.”
“Well... damn.” Vea looked down at the patch. “I’m... sorry I can’t be of more help, then.”
“It is okay,” Schneep reassured her. “You do not need to help.”
“No, I think I do. I’ll let any merms I see know to avoid humans with this symbol. I get quite a few customers for my weaving, you know.” Vea adjusted the sleeves she wore. “And I’ll tell you if I see any.”
Schneep stared at her. Then nodded. “Thank you.”
Vea grinned. “It’s the least I can do.”
The patch fluttered in the slight current. Schneep picked it up and stuffed it back in his bag as the two merms parted ways.

From the recent mermaid ask game 1, 8 and 10?
I love MerMay and this prompt list looks great!
Thanks any if its a no, 🫧 bubble anon🫧
Hi Bubble Anon! I’d love to! Thanks for requesting this, here you go!
From this ask game
Whumper strode along the beach, looking out at the water, the sun giving it a beautiful shimmer. Whumper often liked to come here to admire the scenery and look for seashells. Whumper carried a bag with them to collect the little treasures they found in the sand. Little did they know that today’s find would be much better than a seashell.
Whumper was just about to pick up a sand dollar when something glittery caught their eye. Whumper strode closer and just barely stifled a gasp. Sharp rocks trapped a resplendent fish’s tail. There was red seeping out of it, and on the other side of the tail was the upper half of a person. Their breathing was labored and shallow, and their eyes were closed. Their long, wet hair clung to their face, and their webbed ears poked out between the strands. Sparkling scales decorated their upper half here and there. They were the most stunning creature Whumper had ever seen.
Whumper gingerly climbed over the rocks to where the merperson lay. They slowly and carefully freed the merperson’s tail from its trap. They lifted the merperson in a bridal carry. The blood from their tail dribbled onto Whumper’s skin, but Whumper didn’t care. To them, even their blood was beautiful.
Whumper turned back the way they had come, carrying the unconscious merperson with them. It was as if the sea had dropped off a gift just for them, and Whumper intended to take very good care of it.
Whumpee stirred against something hard. They opened their eyes to a plain, white bathroom. Whumpee looked around in confusion, their head whipping around when they heard the sound of a door opening.
“Oh my,” a stranger said, “you’re awake.”
The stranger bent down against the rim of the bathtub, which Whumpee realized they were laying in, and reached out to stroke Whumpee’s hair. Whumpee flinched back, their tail splashing in the water.
“Oh no, darling, don’t do that!” the stranger said quickly, “you’ll aggravate things.”
Whumpee followed the stranger’s gaze to their tail. There were soft, white bandages wrapped snugly around it. Whumpee looked back at the stranger with wide, fearful eyes.
“Don’t look so frightened,” the stranger cooed, “I’m not going to hurt you. I spent a good half-hour tending to you.”
“Who-” Whumpee swallowed, “who are you? Where am I?”
“My name is Whumper,” the stranger answered, “and you’re home, little one.”
“Home?”
Whumper nodded, a sparkle in their eye.
“The bathroom is only temporary, of course,” Whumper said, “I’ve already ordered better living arrangements for you. The tank should be here in a few days.”
“Tank?” Whumpee asked, “I don’t understand-”
“Don’t you?” Whumper tilted their head, “I’ve rescued you from the harsh, unforgiving sea. You’re going to live with me now, safe and cared for.”
“Wha- no!” Whumpee cried, “no, I have to get back. I have to go home. Please, take me home!”
“Little one, you are home,” Whumper said, standing up, “you need to accept that, or you won’t acclimate as well.”
Whumper started to leave. When they got to the door, they turned to look at Whumpee.
“I’m going to go do some research, but I’ll be back soon,” Whumper promised.
Whumper closed the door behind them. Whumpee looked around the small bathroom again. Their breaths came in short gasps and their eyes went wide. They were trapped, and there was nothing they could do about it.

Idea for an au (one-shot) mermay fic I am working on!
Okay so for context I am a Peter Pan fanatic and every year or so I fall into the book pretty deeply. So I thought it would be fun to do a mermay au that revolves around the actual story of Peter Pan.
Sun and Moon are mermaids that live in mermaid lagoon while reader is one of the lost children. Now mermaids in the lagoon always avoid the lost children. They dash away as soon as they come close, but they will talk with Peter (but Peter is not human really). So, I was wondering what could happen that would allow the mermaid Sun to get close with the human child? Perhaps he was caught in a net left by the pirates and the young kid saves him.
After which reader frees him and he dashes away into the depths of the lagoon, but he begins to take notice of the child, watching them to make sure they are safe in the lagoon and such. But he does not come near as that is not in his nature.
Now Moon does not approve of Sun watching over the child. He knows the rules of the Neverland, but one day when Sun is resting, he sees the child fall into the water and struggle against the tide. Moon begrudgingly helps them onto a rock before hurrying away again. At this point both mermaids are now watching the child to make sure they don’t drown in mermaids lagoon.
But one night, at the turn of the moon, when the lagoon is at its darkest, the mermaids change. They wail and cry for the moon and are more monstrous. There are rules that you don’t go to the lagoon at night without Peter. And no one, not even Peter, goes to the lagoon on the new moon. But maybe Peter forgot to tell this news to their newest lost child. He would have for sure. He forgets a lot of things.
Reader likes the lagoon. It is always nice to rest there and they are aware of the two mermaids that watch them. They hardly come too close unless they are in danger. They decide to go to the lagoon one day that Peter is gone away to the mainland and it happens to be on the night of the new moon.
They are sitting on the rocks when the sun sets over Neverland. They have never seen such a lovely sunset. But then everything gets dark and cold. The world seems to feel more dangerous. Nervously they get up to leave when the wailing of the mermaids begin.
Reader hurriedly scrambles to leave the lagoon but are grabbed by the mermaids who drag them into the water. They struggle as the mermaids bite and attack before the two mermaids they know, dark as the others fall into a frenzy on the mermaids grasping them.
Sun and moon then take reader, difficultly, to an underwater cave biting and snapping at each other all the way. They are rough with young reader but they can’t help it. The moon is gone on this night and they are not the same.
They get reader to a safe rock, or a place they can climb away to wait out the night while Moon and Sun claw at each other. They try to then attack at reader as the clouds cover the stars and reader is fearful through the night.
As daybreak rises the mermaids have fallen silent and reader, exhausted from the night, sees both Sun and Moon watching them with worried looks. Sun is the first to reach up to them, sees them flinch but he continues to reach and gently he pulls the child to him. He worries over the bruises and cuts given to them. Moon frets as well, but doesn’t come too close. He watches from a safe distance. Sun cradles reader close and Moon begins to sing so that reader can rest after the night.
Reader does fall asleep and Sun and Moon both escort them back to the Neverland shores where they make sure none of the beasts or pirates come. But with Peter gone there is relative safety on the Neverland.
After this, reader always returns to mermaid lagoon, but never on the night of the new moon, and often is given little gifts from the two mermaids. Pearls, combs, shells, and the like. Reader does the same and gives nuts, acorns, and pretty leaves they find making friends with the two mermaids that saved them.

The Night We Met - To Love the Sea
“I…I’m not so sure about this Wei Ying.” He swallowed, staring over the edge of the wooden board he was essentially using like a paddle board, keeping a separation between him and the deep water.
“It’s alright, I’ll be right here with you.” Wei Wuxian smiled, holding out a hand. “We won’t be diving, we’ll stay on the surface and just beneath.”
Lan Wangji swallowed nervously and finally gave a nod, sliding to the edge of the board and allowing his feet to dangle first before he slipped in, though still held onto the board.
“That’s it, It’s not so bad. Now, don’t freak out…they're coming now to filter feed.” Wei Wuxian smiled and pointed at the spotted dark mass swimming through the water. It was a whale shark!
Lan Wangji felt his heart jump into his throat, letting out a nervous breath as the dark mass swam along beside them, letting out a deep sound as its mouth skimmed the surface. “You’re sure it doesn't eat larger things than plankton and small fish…?”
Wei Wuxian chuckled and shook his head. “They’re not like any of the other sharks with big teeth. You can touch its side. Try it.” He touched it to demonstrate and was rewarded with another smaller sound as if it was greeting him. “This one is super talkative.”
The traveler swallowed and nodded, trying to build up some courage as they paddled along beside the large fish. Well, it also helped that Wei Wuxian had shifted his tail to match the beast, so it felt a little more comforting- like it wouldn’t attack its own kind or maybe it was because Wei Wuxian was here with him in general.
Lan Wangji closed his eyes tightly and reached out a hand, and finally, a calm washed over him as the skin moved under his fingers. It was much rougher than he expected, like sandpaper. “This is talkative…? Its skin is so much rougher than your tail.” Lan Wangji swam beside the whale shark, watching the little fish cling to its belly as much as he could from the surface.
“Most sharks don’t have the means to make noise. This is one of the reasons humans are scared of them so much…besides the teeth they usually have.” Wei Wuxian chuckled, “Sharks have terribly rough skin. You'd like petting a different fish I'm sure but we’ll work our way to faster-moving fish. Most big whales are docile but they tend to jump out of the water which can be dangerous if hanging out with them on the surface.”
Lan Wangji nodded dumbly and pulled his hand away, not wanting to rough up his hand too much. “It…doesn’t seem too scary. At least this one.”
Wei Wuxian beamed, “That’s good progress.” He swam around his companion and glanced at the sky, letting out a soft breath. “The sun is getting low. Do you have the courage to peek under the surface before we go back?”
“That’ll burn…”
Wei Wuxian paused and rubbed his chin in consideration. “True, you’re not used to salt water like me…here.” He lifted his hands and rubbed his thumbs lightly over the other’s eyelids, leaving a light shimmer over the other’s eyes.
“What’d you do?” Lan Wangji blinked after, resisting the urge to rub his eyes once the other had moved his hands.
“I gave your eyes a little protection! I can take it off once we get ashore.” Wei Wuxian smiled, gently tugging on the other’s hand. “No excuses now! Hurry, the sun is going to get too low!”
Lan Wangji nervously swallowed and nodded, taking a deep breath and dipping his head below the surface.
At first he was scrunching his eyes too tightly, but when he finally opened his eyes properly, he widened them in awe.
The sun’s light filtered through the ocean, golden rays shimmering through the deep blues in ways he hadn’t seen before. large schools of small fish turned their bodies and made a glimmering show, while other whale sharks skimmed the surface further away. Far off, he could hear the high and low trill of a whale song.
His favorite part though was to see Wei Wuxian swim in front of him and witness his tail shift in those shimmering blues, that he almost forgot he needed to breathe.

I’m hoping I’ll be posting the next chapter of Within a Sun and Moonlit Cove by early to mid February. For now, I thought I’d share two snippets from part of a future chapter of meeting with Eclipse, since the images made me snicker while writing it.
Blood mention but no one’s hurt.
