not to keep vagueposting about animal welfare discourse, but i happened to run into one of the blogs that was shitting on scout for their cow husbandry and the shit they were saying was so fucking stupid...it was something along the lines of 'rabbits aren't social animals because their wild ancestors have a social group set entirely by mating/the HRS tries to force you to bond rabbits unnecessarily and is a peta-affiliated organization/its unnecessary to spay female rabbits because the 85% association between uterine cancer and not spaying is only supported by two studies', all of which may make sense for breeding rabbits is complete and utter bullshit when dealing with pet rabbits.

Rabbits are indeed social animals that grow anxious when alone and should have SOME form of companionship most hours of the day. This does not have to be another rabbit, and the urging to establish a bonded pair is typically done for people who are OUT OF THE HOUSE most of the day. HRS and shelters don't 'force' pairings, they encourage them because having someone around 24/7 isnt always viable in American households. When I tried to get Celeste bonded because I was worried about her welfare (this was when I was 14 and new to rabbits), both the HRS and shelters talked us out of it because she very clearly did not care about other buns, and didn't need to be bonded because there was always someone around them. But if you're a singular person who's away from home most of the time, then yes you need some sort of partner animal because it reduces stress in your rabbit.

Those social structures are ofc going to be different if you have unfixed breeding animals, but the core aspect of it is still the same. Rabbits are social animals. They are comforted by the presence of others around them, form bonds with other rabbits, and feel more secure in groups. Just because they are more territorial when unfixed (as they should!) doesn't reduce the fact that they are social prey animals, it just means that you need to keep them in different conditions than you would a fixed creature with less hormonal urges

The HRS is not aligned with PETA. They denounce affiliations with meat breeders because they're entirely based on improving the welfare of rabbits that are kept as pets. I can see why some might feel offended on their stance against meat rabbits, but rabbits are still primarily viewed as livestock, and after hearing enough comments about people wanting to eat my rabbit, I can understand why they'd be so clear on it. People are assholes about pets that are commonly viewed as feeder animals.

There is indeed a high risk associated between UNBRED unspayed female rabbits and uterine cancer. This is supported by several studies on animals with similar breeding lifestyles by multiple veterinary institutions. You won't notice it in your breeding females because the risk is SPECIFICALLY for unbred animals, aka most pets. So yes, spaying is necessary for your doe's health if you do not intend to regularly breed or have stopped regularly breeding

Even if there wasn't a very real danger to their health, you'd still need to get them fixed to reduce behavioral problems. Unfixed rabbits are much more territorial, destructive, and aggressive, making them more difficult to keep in a home environment. They will growl, they will lunge and bite (and rabbit bites are not something you want to fuck with- I have scars from Celeste's nips), they will piss and shit to mark their territory and it WILL be pungent and unsanitary even if they are litterbox trained. They can still be cuddly with you, sure, that won't reduce their value as pets, but a perpetually sexually frustrated and territorial animal is not fun to deal with and is arguably unethical for the rabbit. If you want a pet rabbit, you need to get them spayed. And I say this from personal experience- Celeste wasn't spayed when we got her, but after she did get spayed, she became much more manageable and less likely to bite. She was still manageable beforehand, but afterwards she was a hell of a lot more relaxed and not stressed

There's nothing wrong with having significantly different husbandry because you are a meat/fur breeder; unfixed animals have different temperaments, different needs, and are typically kept in different conditions that are more economically and behaviorally suited to turning a profit. But those care requirements change drastically when you have only one to two fixed animals in a home environment, which means that you cannot pass judgement on pet care requirements when you're a meat breeder, and visa versa.

#lets also not forget that this whole discourse started bc someone said that culling goat kids at birth based on sex felt wrong #and some meat breeder took it as a personal attack even though rabbits and goats are DRASTICALLY DIFFERENT ANIMALS #yes hard culling rabbit kits is necessary. but its also not a massive fucking waste when they have huge litters #if you're breeding an animal for meat and they only have one or two at a time over a span of some months then its a MASSIVE WASTE #but anyways this is about rabbits and yeah. im bitter bc i miss celeste and the holier-than-thou attitude got to me #i dont have problems with how they keep their rabbits but i do have problems with them applying farming rules to domestic pets #if you have multiple unfixed rabbits in an outside hutch then yes you need to keep them seperate to prevent breeding and stress #but they're still fine because *they know other rabbits are there*#they can see smell and hear them #if you have ONE rabbit in a home environment it NEEDS companionship bc its alone #if its unfixed then no it cant be another rabbit but it can be you. if its fixed then thats when another bun is an option #and yes they are intensely social and rabbits that do accept a partner benefit massively from it have you even seen bonded pairs #they groom each other and flop together and spend all their time with each other its def. a mutually beneficial pairing #celeste just didnt need it bc there was always someone home with us so she saw other rabbits as a threat #but if that wasnt the case then it would have been different #they arent dogs or cats!! you cant treat them as such!!#and for the record the husbandry needs of unfixed vs fixed animals is a Thing for all other pet species #or at least most of the

SketchDaily. Lots of pose references, massive library, is set on a timer so you can practice quick figure drawing. Free.

SculptGL. A sculpting tool which I am yet to master, but you should be able to make whatever 3d object you like with it. free.

Pexels. Free stock images. And the search engine is actually pretty good at pulling up what you want.

Figurosity. Great pose references, diverse body types, lots of "how to draw" videos directly on the site, the models are 3d and you can rotate the angle, but you can't make custom poses or edit body proportions. Free, account option, paid plans available.

Line of Action. More drawing references, this one also has a focus on expressions, hands/feet, animals, landscapes. Free.

Animal Photo. You pose a 3d skull model and select an animal species, and they give you a bunch of photo references for that animal at that angle. Super handy. Free.

Height Weight Chart. You ever see an OC listed as having a certain weight but then they look Wildly different than the number suggests? Well here's a site to avoid that! It shows real people at different weights and heights to give you a better idea of what these abstract numbers all look like. Free to use.

'Enjoy it despite its flaws' is one thing, but Mass Effect somehow invented its own category: 'simultaneously one of the most flawed and the most well-crafted sci-fi stories I've ever experienced'. These games are incredible. They’re the worst. All the women are sexualized. All the women have deeply flawed and complex personalities without being either demonized or romanticized. The first available f/f ship seems to be written along the guidelines of 'what would a straight man find hot'. As the games go on, they effortlessly include multiple same sex romance options given just as much care and development as the the opposite sex ones. You can play as a xenophobic murderhobo asshole. You can play as someone genuinely caring but also harsh, who inspires growth and co-operation wherever you go but who makes hard choices when you have to. You can kill civilians and punch reporters and commit genocide. You can stop a generational war and mediate peace and save several species from extinction. The robots are stereotypically evil cannon fodder. The robots are deeply complex with a tragic history. Your team mates are assholes with xenophobic opinions or justifications for police brutality and genocide, or they just want excuses to Do Murder. You team mates are deeply flawed and can be urged to grow alongside you. The most important aliens are all humanoids. There are plant aliens and jellyfish aliens and insect aliens and elephant aliens and aliens who can’t share an atmosphere with us. You have to drive around countless identically boring planets with little to show for it. You get to discover hidden secrets and civilisations millions of years old and live through some of the most emotionally harrowing scenes in storytelling history. I am going absolutely insane about it.

A Hundred Years of Sleep is an interactive fiction novel taking place in a universe of magic and machinery. It aims to guide you through a journey through the stars, one that begins and ends with your very home.

The Story

You come from Vaeravel, a small and peaceful planet orbiting around an even smaller star in a corner of the universe. You live with your aunts in your quaint neighborhood until you're considered a young adult by the standards of your long-lived species.

Then without fanfare, everything ends.

The Collapse is a terrible accident that completely destroys your planet and most of its inhabitants. You manage to survive, taken to one of the few emergency vessels fleeing disaster, but slip away into a deep sleep.

You wake up again, in an unfamiliar room, in an unfamiliar galaxy, alone. Everywhere you look, life has gone on without you.

So when you hear rumors of a ship departing for what is now called The Collapsed you can't help but embark on the journey home, so that maybe by the end of it you'd be granted peace, or at least instructed on what to do with all your loss.

Features

Khael (he/him, or she/her), the Captain of the Chrysa, the ship travelling to reach The Collapsed. Highly perceptive and infuriatingly charming, Khael is undoubtedly the person in charge. But what could they possibly stand to gain in embarking on such a dangerous journey?

Nathaniel (he/him, or she/her), allegedly a researcher hailing from afar, they seem to be unfamiliar with how the entire galaxy works. Mysterious, reserved and stubborn to a fault, it's undeniable they're hiding something big. Yet as complete strangers, you have no idea why they'd be so opposed to your presence onboard.

Aelinor (he/him or she/her), your old neighbor and childhood friend, miraculously found again in the mists of the ship's crew. Although they're just as sweet as you remember them, you can't help but wonder...where were they as you slept?

Wet Beast Wednesday: chitons

For last week's Wet Beast Wednesday I talked about a weird invertebrate whose name starts with "c" so this week I'm gonna branch out from that and talk about a weird invertebrate whose name starts with a "c". Chitons are marine mollusks of the class Polyplacophora that bear a resemblance to limpets, but have a segmented shell that allows for more flexibility. They are named after a form of clothing worm by the ancient Greeks.

Chitons are similar in appearance and ecology to limpets, though they are not closely related. The shell of a chiton is made of 8 plates called valves. Valves are the name of any mollusk shell that is divided into multiple pieces. Most mollusk shells are made of one continuous piece and the only ones that have valves are the chitons, bivalves, and a few weird snails. The valves of a chiton overlap slightly, allowing for flexibility while still giving protection. Chitons can curl up into balls and flex backwards to move over concave surfaces that limpets wouldn't be able to. The valves are imbedded in and held together by a thick, muscular ring called the girdle that encircles the body. In most species, only the sides of the valves are covered by the girdle, leaving the rest exposed to the water. A few species cover more or all of the valves with the girdle. When a chiton dies and the girdle decays, the valves will separate. Individual valves sometimes wash up on beaches and are called butterfly shells due to their v-shaped appearance. The shell is used for defense. Chitons can curl up in a ball when not attached to a rock. If one is attached to a rock, it can suction on, presenting predators with no good way to attack its soft underbelly. Some species have spikes, bristles, or other ornaments on their valves and girdles that can provide additional protection.

Underneath the shell, the chiton's body is soft. It consists largely of a muscular foot that is used for movement. To either side of the foot is the mantle cavity, which consists of channels filled with gills that water is pulled through. There is no distinct head, but a mouth is present on the front end. Inside the mouth is the radula, a tongue-like appendage that is covered in teeth. The teeth are special because they are coated in magnetite, a very hard magnetic mineral that has iron as one of its main ingredients. While the metal is used to reinforce the teeth and keep them from wearing out (in fact, the chiton Chaetopleura apiculata has the hardest teeth of any known animal), it may also be used for magnetoreception. This is when an animal can sense magnetic fields. It is possible that the magnetic teeth of chitons can sense the Earth's magnetic field and help with navigation and migration. Most chitons are herbivores or omnivores that feed on algae, bryozonans, diatoms, and other tiny rock-dwellers by scraping at rocks with their radulae. Some are carnivores that target barnacles and can even eat small crustaceans and fish. They often hunt by holding the front ends of their girdles up in the water. Should an animal mistake it for shelter, the chiton will clamp down on them. Food is forced through the esophagus by a current of mucus moved by cilia.

When it comes to senses, chitons have a few options. Like their gastropod cousins, chitons have a chemosensory organ called the subradular organ used for smell and their feet and girdles are full of sensory nerves. They also have special organs called aesthetes. These consist of light-sensing cells that are just below the surface of the shell. The aesthetes are not true eyes, only being able to distinguish light from dark, though they can tell the difference between a shadow and the effects of clouds moving over the sun. Some species use collections of aesthetes to form simple eyes called shell eyes. Unlike the aesthetes, the shell eyes can form images, though Chitons do not have nerve structures needed to form a high resolution image. Shell eyes are distinct from those of any other animal in their structure. Most animals have eye lenses made of protein-based structures, but chiton lenses are crystalline, made of aragonite, the same material that makes up the shell of most mollusks. Each shell eye is compound. The shell eyes are almost certainly used for predator detection. Fossil chitons have been found dating back to the Cambrian period. but shell eyes have only been found in fossils from less than 10 million years old. This likely makes chitons the most recent animal group to have evolved true eyes. Chiton eyes have also been found to work both in water and air, which is tricky due to the way light travels differently through both mediums.

The majority of chitons live in intertidal or sub-tidal areas, making them a shallow water group. A few species have been found living in much deeper water, up to 2,000 meters down. Chitons have been known to have homing behavior as they will consistently return to a safe spot after feeding. How they do this is unknown. Sensing the magnetic field of the Planet may play a role, though it is also possible that they lay down chemical trails to find their way home. Chitons are broadcast spawners, with both males and females releasing gametes into the water. Larvae can swim for a while before moving to the substrate.

I will close by bringing up an animal I only learned about recently but has rapidly become one of my favorite weird beasts. This is Cryptochiton stelleri. Its common name is the gumboot chiton, but some people call it the wandering meatloaf, which is objectively the best name ever. It is the largest chiton, growing up to 36 cm (14 in) and 2 kg (4.4 lbs). Its girdle completely covers its shell, which does make it look more like a meatloaf. They can live up to 40 years and are the first known animals to have the mineral santabarbarite in their bodies. They live throughout the north pacific and have been used as a food source by many different cultures. There may be a lot of bad stuff in the world, but if things get too bad, just remember that we live on the same planet as an animal called the wandering meatloaf that can live for 40 years and has a tongue covered in magnetic teeth.

okayokayokayokay so pretty much all of these questions will be Officially Answered properly in the character design/intro pages im working on but also i am physically vibrating with excitement about the fact that you noticed all these details and i have very little self control so! lore dump time!!!

(minor tw for mentions of leos self-harm/self-destructive anxious behaviors and unhealthy coping skills)

- mikey does indeed have curly fur! i believe he would be considered a 'rex' rat (pictured on the left) for this trait? though the curls can be more easily seen on mice (pictured on the right). or, at least it seems that way. have not delved too deeply into the details of rodent genes and husbandry, but id assume its the same sort of mutation considering curly haired mice are also referred to as rex sometimes? either way hes a extra floofy bby 🧡

-as for raphie, unfortunately being more fluff and less shell than the average rapheal comes with its downsides. especially if you and your brothers occasionally encounter things like territorial dogs, hungry cats, or sewer crocodiles while exploring places ur dad said not supposed to go. (most of his scars will have more ninja related stories, but his ear i think got messed up from something very animal. probably around age 11 ish? old enough to sneak out from dads protection but young enough to not fully know how to handle himself alone against real danger. thankfully his ear injury looks worse than it actually is for the most part, as the damage was largely to the outer ear. his hearing wasnt super affected, except that he now has a bit of a harder time being able to track/pinpoint noises origins if its on his right side.)

-also yep! dons got some glasses that just clip/rest on the bridge of his nose! theyre mostly just for home use, as they do fall off if hes knocked around. in the field he has some goggles he tends to use (theyre helpful as they have multiple additional functions like heat-imaging, extra zoom/telescoping, and recording capabilities. but also theyll give him headaches if he wears them for too long without breaks). contacts are theoretically also an option but he absolutely hates the sensation of putting them in. so sometimes when hes tired he'll just not bother with either clips or goggles and just squint and struggle. leo hates when he does that lol.

-speaking of leo, he is def an anxious baby :) he has a few patches of fur missing on his hand cos he has the tendency to tug on it while hes thinking. he yanked and chewed on his own tail a lot when he was younger too, which is why when hes older he usually wears some wraps to cover the scars left from that behavior. he finds those scars specifically to be kinda embarrassing and shameful because they werent from any battle or life-lesson, just his own 'inability to control himself'. all of his brothers have repeatedly called him out on the fact that that is not a healthy way to think about his anxiety or mental health, but leo insists hes fine. hes kinda convinced himself that a proper warrior always has control over his own body* and his own thoughts, thus he should be able to just like willpower-brute-force his way into 'being better'. (this line of thinking pisses raph off so much he has to leave and go hit something)

Splinter also tries to talk him through some of that internalized guilt/shame/everything, but splinters very metaphorical, poetic, and indirect when it comes to talking about Big Things, which combined with how much leo gets caught in his own head, makes it kinda hard to gauge how much these talks actually help

*this is made extra fun considering leos also ftm trans, so he is faced with a body that fundamentally disobeys him perhaps more than the average rat-man.

-and im still going back and forth between a few species for splinter, but im leaning mostly towards an African Spurred Tortoise! they have these beautiful if kinda subtle geometric shell patterns and are the third largest species of tortoise in the world. the only thing that doesnt fit perfectly with Splints is that (allegedly) their lifespan in captivity is around 50ish years, whereas im p sure Tortoise Splinter is well over 75, probably closer to 90 when the boys are born and hes mutated into Old Man Papa.

but maybe hes just a particularly long lasting African Spurred Tortoise.

the Hamato family has taken very good care of him for many decades after all. :)

An App Does Not a Master Naturalist Make

I have mixed feelings about Michael Coren’s April 25 Washington Post article, “These 4 free apps can help you identify every flower, plant and tree around you.” His ebullience at exploring some of the diverse ecological community around him made me grin, because I know exactly what it feels like. There’s nothing like that sense of wonder and belonging when you go outside and are surrounded by neighbors of many species, instead of a monotonous wall of green, and that is a big part of what led me to become a Master Naturalist.

When I moved from the Midwest to the Pacific Northwest in 2006, I felt lost because I didn’t recognize many of the animals or plants in my new home. So I set about systematically learning every species that crossed my path. Later, I began teaching community-level classes on nature identification to help other people learn skills and tools for exploring their local flora, fauna, and fungi.

Let me be clear: I love apps. I use Merlin routinely to identify unknown bird songs, and iNaturalist is my absolute favorite ID app, period. But these tools are not 100% flawless.

For one thing, they’re only as good as the data you provide them. iNaturalist’s algorithms, for example, rely on a combination of photos (visual data), date and time (seasonal data), and GPS coordinates (location data) to make initial identification suggestions. These algorithms sift through the 135-million-plus observations uploaded to date, finding observations that have similar visual, seasonal, and location data to yours.

There have been many times over the years where iNaturalist isn’t so sure. Take this photo of a rather nondescript clump of grass. Without seed heads to provide extra clues, the algorithms offer an unrelated assortment of species, with only one grass. I’ve gotten that “We’re not confident enough to make a recommendation” message countless times over my years of using the app, often suggesting species that are clearly not what I’m looking at in real life.

Because iNaturalist usually offers up multiple options, you have to decide which one is the best fit. Sometimes it’s the first species listed, but sometimes it’s not. This becomes trickier if all the species that are suggested look alike. Tree-of-Heaven (Ailanthus altissima), smooth sumac (Rhus glabra) and eastern black walnut (Juglans nigra) all have pinnately compound, lanceolate leaves, and young plants of these three species can appear quite similar. If all you know how to do is point and click your phone’s camera, you aren’t going to be able to confidently choose which of the three plants is the right one.

Coren correctly points out that both iNaturalist and Pl@ntNet do offer more information on suggested species—if people are willing to take the time to look. Too many assume ID apps will give an easy, instant answer. In watching my students use the app in person almost everyone just picks the first species in the list. It’s not until I demonstrate how to access the additional content for each species offered that anyone thinks to question the algorithms’ suggestions.

While iNaturalist is one of the tools I incorporate into my classes, I emphasize that apps in general are not to be used alone, but in conjunction with field guides, websites, and other resources. Nature identification, even on a casual level, requires critical thinking and observation skills if you want to make sure you’re correct. Coren’s assertion that you only need a few apps demonstrates a misunderstanding of a skill that takes time and practice to develop properly—and accurately.

Speaking of oversimplification, apps are not a Master Naturalist in your pocket, and that statement —while meant as a compliment–does a disservice to the thousands of Master Naturalists across the country. While the training curricula vary from state to state, they are generally based in learning how organisms interact within habitats and ecosystems, often drawing on a synthesis of biology, geology, hydrology, climatology, and other natural sciences. A Master Naturalist could tell you not only what species you’re looking at, but how it fits into this ecosystem, how its adaptations are different from a related species in another ecoregion, and so forth.

In spite of my criticisms, I do think that Coren was absolutely onto something when he described the effects of using the apps. Seeing the landscape around you turn from a green background to a vibrant community of living beings makes going outside a more exciting, personal experience. I and my fellow nature nerds share an intense curiosity about the world around us. And that passion, more than any app or other tool, is fundamental to becoming a citizen naturalist, Master or otherwise.

In my head-canon for Minecraft's "history", these two are (technically) the same species.

It all stems from my perception of the Ancient Builders. Its mostly inspired by the comics of the amazing DongLie (check them out their work is amazing), with some changes to fit with how I see the elements the game lays out.

For one, I believe the Ancient Builders' ultimate goal was eternal life. Their hubris is why they're "extinct". And two, there were 4 Mistakes that lead to their downfall.

I'm gonna go over these 4 Mistakes some day, but the second and fourth one is what I'm going to go into in some detail.

So what does any of this have to do with the Wither Skeletons and Endermen?

Well, first I must describe the second mistake. And to rationalise why it happened, I must also touch on the first mistake; the creation of Creepers. I believe the Ancient Builders created Creepers in their desert temples as their first foray into eternal life. This attempt fundamentaly changed the Overworld, cursing it to produce these creatures every night. I believe Zombies, Skeletons and Spiders have always existed in the Overworld, and the Ancient Builders had adapted to them the same way we have. But the Creepers rocked their society. Some of them went deep underground (leading to the third Mistake), and some of them went "deep" I.e: to the Nether.

This is where the second mistake occurs. They found the Piglins, whose corpses became reanimated upon their death. Not anything crazy, the same thing happens to Ancient Builders in the Overworld, if not for the fact that Zombified Piglins have actual awareness. Immortality through zombification became an option and the Builders deduced it was true to the Nethers sand trapping souls from across dimensions.

So they buried their dead in the large valleys of this sand, and they became reanimated. It was exactly what they wanted, they were aware and immortal.

Unfortunately a complication ensued; Piglins had adapted to soul sand, but the Builders hadn't. Those who had been buried rapidly found their flesh withering away, and their actions becoming more and more aggressive. These withered skeletons became the guards of the Fortresses the Builders constructed to protect themselves from the Nether's dangers. They became nothing more than thugs.

So the Builders continued their work. They theorised that the combined biomass of multiple corpses could overcome the withering problem.

They were right. And they were so, so wrong.

They had awakened one of the primordial forces of the universe, the force of chaos and destructions. The trapped souls had been screaming out to them all along. The withered skeletons were a warning that was impossible to ignore, yet they did.

The Wither had descended upon the Ancient Builders, wanting nothing more then to spread its infection.

The Builders tried to escape, abandoning their portals into the Nether. But they were too slow, the Wither had followed them to the Overworld.

This lead to the third mistake, but I'm not going to talk about that now.

The fourth and final mistake came after the Overworld was no longer safe for the Builders. The Wither was gone, destroyed in the third mistake, but it's rot still corrupted the land. To go to the surface was suicide, to go deep underground was suicide. So the Builders clung to just below the surface. They used their magic to invert stone and tore out their eyes to construct a portal to somewhere out of the Overworld.

They took a leap of faith, and it didn't pay off. They had found a dimension in the Void between dimensions, the End of all reality. Nothing but blank islands for all eternity. But there was something... else.

Another primordial force that threatened everything. Native to this place or trapped their, they did not know. But they had opened the door out and had to close it. So they purposefully disabled the way out, created a dragon to guard it should anyone try to leave. Every island for miles around the exit point was annihilated, as to separate it.

It was the ultimate sacrifice and the final mistake; sealing themselves into the End.

Over time they evolved; their skin became darker, blending into the eternal night; their eyes became larger to see in the darkness; they became taller, their limbs becoming longer to pluck the high snaking chorus fruits - the only food in this place. We've all eaten chorus, we all know how it teleports anything that consumes it. Eating just that fruit caused them to eventually teleport regardless.

And finally, these End-men had become immortal. But there was no victory, their minds had long been lost. Even when they eventually gained the ability to teleport across dimensions they held no memories of these places. They can only grab blocks to move as they did long ago, but none of them know why.

When they see us they feel pain, they look us in the eyes and remember humanity. This makes them sad, which makes them angry. They cannot understand their unexplained grief so they act only in fear and self-preservation.

These 2 creatures, the Wither's skeletons and the men of the End are brothers. Yet they do not know it. For both have long since lost their mind and history; one in pure aggression and obsession, and the other in hubris and insanity.

REVIEWING THIS WHOLE BAG OF RUBBER BUGS:

I mentioned recently that bags of cheap rubber bugs are harder to come by in real stores, but that there are a few options for them online. I just received this set from Aliexpress that’s currently only $4 with free shipping, you might even find the same set cheaper since there’s multiple listings for it, but I can verify this source is using an accurate photo and I am now going to REVIEW THEM:

SPIDER: obligatory, all-purpose spider, ambiguous species, noodly legs, minimal paint application, 3/5

COCKROACH: nice silky black coloration on the back, tan on the underside, rather haphazard leg pose, I like it but in terms of objective quality it’s unfortunately a 2/5 compared to other fake roaches and even to other bugs in this set.

DRAGONFLIES: so this set is definitely pieced together from what were once multiple different rubber bug sets, but I can also confirm that you always get the same selection I’m reviewing, which includes several redundancies. You get both a large and small dragonfly with entirely different sculpts, the smaller one more accurately sculpted but not as dynamically painted! Both I’d give a 3/5, adequate dragonflies

ORTHOPTERA: you get a cricket AND two different styles of grasshopper! The big, detailed black and red cricket is crudely painted but very unique, 3.5/5. The small grasshopper is cute and inoffensive, barely painted, 3/5. The large grasshopper is a 4/5 for me because while I’ve seen plenty like it, it has a really nice gradient from lime green to a darker grassier green that I just find very pleasant.

BEES: two very differently sculpted bees, and they both use a sparkly metallic gold with black stripes. Both deserve a 4/5.

ANTS: collectively I’m gonna say these are a 3.5/5, on their own very plain but I like that together you have a dull yellow-tan ant with comical googly eyes and a bigger, more ominous shiny black ant with spooky red eyes. I like that the black ant is also tied with a couple others as the largest bug in the set. It’s actually only slightly larger than the real life Giant Amazonian ant, Dinoponera, which is also entirely black.

MANTIDS: excellent choice for another double bug, I like the simple cheapness of the little one with its awkwardly sculpted forelegs but to fair it’s a 2/5 compared to the 4/5 of the larger, red-eyed mantis which has more of that “sparkly” paint style!

SCORPIONS: the only other arachnids in the set, and it’s amazing they included two different scorpions but only one spider. Trust me when I say that’s the most radical maverick decision a rubber bug set has ever made in the history of mankind. The small red scorpion is alright, a 3 I guess. The larger one has only six legs which is not accurate (the claws of a scorpion are modified mouthparts, not legs!) but I can’t look at its little black eyes and not want to cry so 5/5 actually.

CICADA: not terribly common in these! Charming, chunky brown cicada, though the thorax piece is so transparent you can always see the hole it plugs into. At one time, this sculpt may have been part of a higher quality set that actually painted over this design flaw. 4/5 regardless.

FLY: there’s a pattern here in which almost every flying insect in the set has a gold-brown base, which I’m not a big fan of. Sadly I’m overall neutral on this fly, normally my favorite of all the basic insects, perhaps because it looks just as much like some sort of wasp. It’s definitely a fly due to having only one pair of wings, and plenty of flies look exactly like this, but I’d just be a bigger fan if it was a chunkier, larger-eyed blowfly or horsefly. 2.5/5

UNKNOWN: there are actually several insects this could possibly represent including a few Lepidoptera and Hymenoptera, but the one insect it most closely resembles is an adult caddisfly. I like it, but it’s difficult to fairly judge it with no certain identification so 3/5 has to do.

HAWKMOTH: stellar choice! I’ve seen only one cheap-grade plastic hawkmoth in my whole life, actually! Several hawkmoths are even clear-winged, though those usually still have dark markings around the wing edges. Would’ve been more accurate to some real species if they just cast the wings in a solid color, but that’s a trivial criticism. 5/5

WASP: the wasp is SO good. The paint on this one is skewed funny but that’s fine, the green of the abdomen pops really well and I love the grouchy red eyes. 5/5

CATERPILLAR: larvae are so rarely included in these, and when they are, they’re often an incredibly plain segmented tube that doesn’t look like anything in particular, or a recolor of a generic caterpillar I’ve seen several times before. This caterpillar sculpt is actually new to me and nicely shaped, with a tapering body and accurate limbs. It is however a rather stiff hunk of plastic, not as rubbery as the others, and honestly this is the one you would want rubberiest! Still a 5/5 for its inclusion at all.

BEETLE: beetles are the most abundant, diverse insect group and the most common rubber bug toy after spiders, so it’s another bold move that they include only one in this whole set and it isn’t even one of the more recognizable, more famous beetles. On its own merits as just a rubber beetle it’s a 3/5, but its metallic blue stands out so nicely in this set, and the sculpt appears to be some sort of blister beetle, a rare choice and a very cool (but dangerous! Don’t touch them!!!) insect group so 5/5

MOSQUITO: mosquitoes are another of my favorite animal groups, and as one of the world’s most abundant, most recognized, most controversial insects you’d think they’d be a standard bug toy already, but this is only the third plastic mosquito design I’ve ever seen in my entire long life! It’s brown, unpainted, dinky and bent funny. 10/5

It's not very often that the General would summon the Master Diviner herself to the seat of Divine Foresight. After all, her constant nagging is not something even a person who has lived millenniums can sit to and listen to.

"What is it that's so important that you called me over, General? Have you perhaps finally decided to make me your successor? It's about time, you know? I am perfectly fitted for the position of-"

Oh, that again. Jing Yuan makes a quick decision to cut her off before she decides to "remind" him of her very qualified resume through memorised paragraphs after paragraphs, "-I'd like you to make a divination for me, Fu Xuan. It's rather important and personal."

"Personal?" Fu Xuan pauses to think, before her face starts booming with much familiarised exasperation again, "Will you please stop wasting the Divination Commission's time again? Our time may seem like nothing to you, but we spend centuries to ensure the Luofu's safety and peace- just because you're bored from the Luofu's troubles, doesn't mean that you'd get to-"

"Please, Fu Xuan? This is rather important."

The General's unforeseen desperation completely catches Fu Xuan off guard.

"...What is it? Make it quick before I change my mind!" Fu xuan decides to make a cut for this time. Perhaps the General is stricken with a troublesome entity after sitting in the seat of Divine Foresight for far too long. Perhaps the General actually has a problem that may concern the comfort of the Luofu Xianzhou-

"It's regarding my lovelife. I'd like you to foresee it's fruits in the future," The general says with an infuriating smile.

Nevermind! Wait. Lovelife?

"Perhaps you'd like to retire and finally find a spouse?!" Fu Xuan's angry exterior has now been banished coincidentally by the chance she sees ahead of him (which is no chance at all- The general is awaiting her maturity, and unfortunately for Fu Xuan, she is showing none of it), "If that's the case-"

"-If this goes successful, I may just consider that very enticing option," But the general, like the lowlife he is, doesn't bother to correct her. Instead, taking advantage of Fuxuan's newly found interest to dig deeper into his current frustrations.

"Please do continue, general!"

Oh yeah, she's buying it.

"What do young people like these days? Perhaps my idea of chivalry is not theirs, but I find that my attempts of quality time doesn't seem to build any type of bond with them. It's quite a problem really," General sighs, his head leaning on his right fist- eyes shutting for awhile to recount his multiple (failed) attempts on flirtatious attempts towards you.

[General Jing Yuan: Pardon me, Lady [name], but I wonder whether you have the time to come to the Seat of Divine Foresight right now for a game of Xianzhou starchess?]

[[Name]: Idk if I can play that tho haha lol,,, what's with the "lady" anyway? u shld prolly do ur work general, unless you wanna get your ass kicked again by qingzu. say hi to her for me btw :p]

Not only he's having trouble trying to decipher your text messages, he's having problems trying to get you to at the very least, interested in him. I mean, why are you mentioning Qingzu so much in a conversation with him?

Even his offers to teach you received reluctant rejections. And Jing Yuan doesn't push because his late father taught him "the ways of a gentleman".

"What's your idea of a quality time anyway?" Fu Xuan butts into his thoughts, "Don't tell me it's playing starchess or reading up on the latest puzzles on Starchess in Xianzhou Magazine?"

Jing Yuan tries to reply, but his answers are stuck in a gaped mouth.

"ARE YOU SERIOUS?" Fu Xuan lets out an aggravated yell. It's not hard to see that she's absolutely confounded by the General's lack of awareness regarding the "simple acts of wooing"- but she supposes it makes sense, after all, he has been alive for quite awhile. He doesn't like to disclose his age- but she is sure that it has reached at least a millenial.

He clears his throat, "...I suppose young people wouldn't find it quite appealing now that you have phrased it that way."

Fu Xuan sighs again, deciding to cross her arms so she doesn't impulsively maul the general's face for his dense outlook on courting, "How old are they anyway? If they are young, I suppose that they are around the two centuries old age range?"

"...Give it just about a few decades."

Fu Xuan swears that her eyes almost popped out of their sockets, "Are you talking about [name]?!"

The general's booming laugh is heard across the room, but his red face exposes his nervousness, "Now, now- keep it down. We don't need the guards hearing this."

Fu Xuan attempts to keep her composure once again, deciding that its best not to put the Luofu General's name to shame by exposing his ridiculously failure of a love life to the whole of Xianzhou. But she just can't help but point out, "They probably think of you as an old man, you know? Especially with the starchess talk and all- it's impossible to perceive underlying romantic connotations from invitations to a game of starchess- especially for a youngling."

The general's face turns sour and Fu Xuan braces herself for another attack, "Then I suppose my talks regarding my old age isn't helping at all?"

Fu Xuan thanks the eons above that she had made a conscious decision to cross her arms.

Vampire Hcs (Micheal Kaiser, Yoichi Isagi, Reo Mikage, Seishiro Nagi)

Disclaimer: There are different conversions, venom, and blood in their system.

Vampire!Michael Kaiser

Once upon a time, Michael was held captive but was given the option of becoming a vampire. He took the offer because there was nothing that would’ve held him back. He wanted to be powerful instead of being weak. However, he does despise being ordered around.

There was a period of time when he and Isagi hunted together, which was when they were freshly turned into vampires by the same person. Both came to an agreement to eliminate their creator for different reasons. Their creator wouldn’t have expected him to backstab them because he was loyal and respectful, unlike Isagi.

“I am my own master.”

He does enjoy being a monster because no one can order him around. He feels powerful and wouldn’t give up this sense of superiority for anything in the world. He is immortal with the exception of supernatural hunter weapons and herbs. He isn’t immune to those by default. He can build up a tolerance to them but they could still kill him.

Michael is terrifyingly good at luring anyone with his charms and looks alone. He is also the type to play with his food (humans) because he likes to work for it. He likes his prey being terrified because it just makes the reward that much greater and sweeter. To him, the blood of his prey tastes much better when they are terrified. He is very sadistic about it.

He would roleplay different sorts of people for entertainment. He would sometimes use his victim's identities as an alias.

He has terrifyingly good senses and purposely acts like a fool. He will think of it as a sort of intense game of cat and mouse. He is also responsible for the deaths of many talented hunters.

He is one of the scariest vampires to get interested in you. He is a very persistent individual. He wouldn’t give up on trying to make you fall in love with him.

He also seems to be the type to be into the vampire x hunter romance trope because a hunter knows how to deal with his kind and annihilate him. Kaiser likes living on the edge, it brings a sense of entertainment to his otherwise boring life. It keeps him on his toes and he loves it. And yes he would think it's a love confession if you tried to take his head when you tried to get on his level of seduction.

When you are in a relationship with him, he would purposely drag his fangs against your skin, preferably your wrist and neck, and other sensitive places in order to watch in amusement when goosebumps appear. He loves seeing you shiver at the sensations that he caused you.

He can get very handsy and seems to always need to have some sort of connection with you. How else could he protect you from the other creatures walking around in disguise?

He can be very possessive of and clingy towards his lover.

He does have the secret wish of finding his match, who would love and join in on his shenanigans. He wants a partner who would get bored just as easily as him to be able to constantly find different ways of entertainment. Someone who would accept and love him for who he is, including his savage self. Someone who will keep him on his toes and can keep up with him. The possibilities of his significant other: his match could be a human, a vampire or a different species.

Vampire!Yoichi Isagi

Yoichi was held captive and his transformation was most likely a case of being at the wrong place at the wrong time. He was given the option to turn into a vampire, however, it was merely the illusion of having an option. Ultimately, he was turned into a vampire against his will.

He hated himself and would starve himself very often. He would have died multiple times if he hadn’t been forced to feed. These events caused him to have pure hatred toward his sire, his creator. This was also the case for the sire, who’d expected Isagi to be nothing more than a coward before them in submission.

Instead, Yoichi became his creator’s demise. He annihilated his creator and it was a bloody mess. It also fed into his reputation among other vampires from the older class to be terrified, but also led them to be intrigued by how this fresh vampire had so viciously committed the act of killing his creator. He devoured his creator, causing him to be stronger than he was before.

There was a long period of time during which he was completely savage and not didn’t care who he ended up pissing off. Kaiser and he hunted together during their time as newbies. Terrifyingly enough, they balanced each other out perfectly. Eventually, though, they separated from each other.

He caused himself to become a bounty on his head because he had rapidly climbed up the food chain, purely by accident. It wasn’t intentional on his part. He became worth a lot of money within both the hunter and vampire realms because he had killed humans and vampires alike without any sort of mercy. However, there was a visible behavioral pattern whenever he killed: it wasn’t impulsive killings of random strangers, more like calculated attacks.

He eventually does reflect on the past and has some regrets about when he was in his savage phase. He strives to be better now.

He is also the first one to befriend a hunter, who was a vampire as well: Rin Itoshi. It was an unusual friendship, but they remained close. At the time, Isagi majorly was his informant because he was everywhere and had more connections than the hunter.

He did develop white highlights through his dark blue hair due to trauma when he was a newbie, ever since then it's been growing like that. He was starting to like the look of his hair.

It took a long time for Isagi to accept himself as a vampire. It’s part of the reason why Rin and he got along with each other. Isagi could empathize with Rin since it wasn’t his choice to be like this either.

He often hunts in the woods for food but also makes money because he was the son of a hunter. Nothing goes to waste. It is also how he met Seishiro Nagi.

He would often visit the company of his friend Reo, who runs a blood bank for the supernatural who need blood to survive. He pays each blood donor, and Isagi just needs to pay a fee to get blood bags.

Yoichi took a page from Kaiser's book to roleplay as a human out of boredom. It's most likely how he found his lover, through work or the place he frequented most of the time.

If you are human, he will keep the facade up as long as possible. It’s either he comes out to you when he is ready to further down the line or when he is forced to reveal his vampire side to you in order to keep you safe.

He is the type to fall in love hard and get protective over you regardless of whether you can take care of yourself or not. You could be a vampire, a demon, or any different species.

It's worse if you are human though because the constant worry hangs over his head. He has made a lot of enemies throughout his time as a vampire and doesn’t want anything to happen to you.

He would fall in love with you even more if you saw his vampire self and accepted him for who he is.

If you are a human around a supernatural creature, he may get territorial and overprotective because he knows they are most likely looking for food.

Overall, he is literally like your guard dog, especially if you are a human in a supernatural environment.

Vampire!Reo Mikage

Reo comes from a pure bloodline of royal vampires that have lived for many centuries and generations. He is considered a prince to the present day within the vampire realm. He comes from old money and has many estates under his name. He moves around a lot and sometimes uses a fake name. If he ever returns to the same area he has lived in before, he will lie on the spot claiming to be a descendant of the Mikage.

He has been taught to have good control over his bloodlust. It lessens his chances of losing control and exposing himself. He learns how to blend in with the humans, lowering his chances even further in order to not be on the hunters’ radar.

In the beginning, he eventually only left the estate because he couldn’t bear with it anymore: He felt suffocated by his family, especially his parents. During this time, he kept wandering from one place to another and eventually met Seishiro Nagi, a farmer. Nagi let him follow him around as long as Reo helped him with his daily chores. Nagi wasn’t treating him like royalty, so he was a fascinating human to Reo, an enigma.

By pure accident, Nagi became his first creation. Nagi was immune to royal vampire compulsion and eventually became stronger than Reo himself. He was intrigued but also scared of what Nagi was capable of.

They did have a rough patch where Nagi did cut ties with Reo for a bit, but they eventually reunited with mutual friends. The separation did them well. It is now very rare to see the duo being separated, and even if they are, the other is always close by.

Reo founded a business: a blood bank, which Nagi was the co-owner of. Nagi was the one who came up with the concept and Reo brought it to life. It was a blood bank where supernatural creatures could buy blood bags with no questions asked, as long as they paid the fee. It was a successful business, the company eventually branched out to sell other species' blood in exchange for money.

It was successful because Reo paid good money for humans to come and donate a bag of blood, even more so if they were a different species. The company staff was mixed, there were both supernatural creatures and humans. Reo paid his workers very well, it was the best place to work at because of the work-life balance it provided in combination with the high salary.

He would donate human blood to various hospitals to avoid suspicion from his human workers and outsiders.

He does have professional relationships with other companies that are owned by creatures such as himself. This is the reason why he has the creature secretary separated from the human one because he would like to avoid having fragile humans in the crossfire in case a business deal goes sideways. The human secretary only deals with human-owned companies.

Overall, Reo is a very wealthy man with many talents. He is the owner of very successful businesses and keeps up with the time of the market.

Reo has a higher chance of falling in love with one of the workers in one of his own businesses, especially if you have dealt with him and know him personally. He is very aware that he is a piece of work and a high-maintenance individual. You would catch his eye especially when you don’t let him have his way with you, even if he is your boss. He likes someone who isn’t afraid of him and able to hold their own.

He likes working for your love. If you have feelings for him and don't want to date him because he is your boss, he will offer to get you a spot at Nagi’s video game company, “Hassle”. He will make it work if he is genuinely interested in you, working out the obstacles between the two of you.

He is also one of the scariest vampires to get interested in you. He is a very persistent and determined man, and he wouldn’t give up until you fell in love with him as well. You are going to fall in love with him, one way or another.

Vampire!Seishiro Nagi

Seishiro becoming a vampire was by pure accident. Reo fed on him and healed his wounds to avoid suspicion, which is why he had Reo’s blood running through his system when he died. He was a farmer before turning into this creature.

Seishiro cut him off because Reo was constantly on his back and treating him like an experiment ever since realizing that his compulsion didn’t work on Nagi. He knows that Reo is secretly terrified of him.

Nagi is beyond strong both physically and mentally, so even when he was younger when it came to this life, there were multiple occasions where he had gone head to head with the elderly vampires. What he was lacking was experience, and how to use his skills effectively to their full potential.

Nagi often stole from humans. It is how he met Yoichi Isagi, a vampire a few years older than him after conversion. Nagi didn’t like working for his food, so he ended up stealing others’ hunts, but that time he didn’t realize it was actually another vampire that was disguising their scent as a human’s. It was surprising for Nagi to see Isagi chasing him and aiming at him with his hunting weapon when Nagi attempted to steal a bear from him.

Seishiro met different people who became his friends in the same forest he had taken a liking to because it was peaceful and there were plenty of animals to hunt for food. Seishiro was good at replicating noises from other species out of boredom. He howled on a full moon night, causing a lone werewolf to appear only for the two to stare at each other in silence. Neither of them was suspecting the other. A vampire howling perfectly like a werewolf. Nagi did have to come to an agreement with an older werewolf, who also lived in the enormous forest, on sharing it.

He has learned a lot from the different people he has encountered during his time in the forest. Eventually, Reo and he made up.

Nagi is a co-owner of a blood bank company, along with Reo. He himself created a video game company under the name “Hassle”. He was getting bored with the games that were already out and wanted something harder to beat. He did manage to create the kind of games he wanted and gained a reputation for players like him, who wanted challenging and harder games. Hassle does offer your normal typical game levels, but it does provide the option of buying a harder version, in which it is more complex to beat and finish the game.

He is also a professional gamer on the side, and often received offers to advertise them. He will be the most honest and blunt person giving his review for an opinion on a game.

He is most likely to fall in love with a fellow gamer through collaborations, with someone at his job or even working underneath Reo’s company. You have to be someone special that stands out in some way in order to catch Nagi’s eye.

If you are human dating him, he wouldn’t even try to hide that he was a bloodsucker. He would warn you to not drink from his bottle because there is blood inside. If you didn’t listen, that's your fault.

Overall, he requires a lot of patience to deal with in order to build and maintain a good relationship with him.
