Happy Fossil Friday!
Who: Borealopelta markmitchelli
name meaning: "Northern shield" "Mark Mitchell"
pronunciation: Bore-ee-al-oh-pell-tah Mark-Mitchell-eye
What: A nodosaur, the un-clubbed kin to ankylosaurs
When: Early Cretaceous Period
Where: Alberta, Canada
Fun fact!: The specimen pictured above is one of the most well preserved dinosaurs ever discovered. It was discovered by miner Shawn Funk at Millennium Mine oil sands just north of Fort McMurray in Alberta. This local was perfect for exceptional preservation as the deposits were predominantly bitumen-rich (coal) sands. Preserved on the animal are not only skin impressions, but a snapshot image of what the animal would have looked like in life, and even red pigments have been found that indicate the hue of the skin.

A herd of North American Cretaceous dinosaurs. I recently did a rewatch of the disney movie Dinosaur and really liked this mass of different dinosaurs all moving towards a single goal. Only difference is that this time, the small carnivorous dinosaurs are also coming along for the ride as pest control against the small pesky alvarezaurids.

Discovered in a mine in Alberta, Canada in 2011, a fossil of a nodosaur dinosaur is one of the most well-preserved fossils of its kind, down to its skin, scales and even the contents of its stomach. These heavily-armored herbivores walked the Earth between the Late Jurassic and Late Cretaceous periods, with this particular specimen dating back 110 million years.
Considered one of the major archeological finds from the last decade, the nodosaur is currently on display at the Royal Tyrrell Museum in Alberta, Canada

Smaugust 2023 - Panovern
A Tenidraco rides a Panovern (Panoplosaurus vivernus), after a successful harvest of protein rich beetle grubs. The Panovern use its strength and wedge shaped head to roll old tree trunks to expose the grubs to be collected. Relatively docile they make for easy domestication.

you once walked this earth the same way we do
you could have never known what you'd do
how you'd live forever when we found you
you had no name, but you became immortal
110 million years later and we can say
hello again

animantarx ramaljonesi - nodosaur - early/late cretaceous
this lovely lady has what is definitely one of the top-tier names of the dinosaur kingdom, meaning "living fortress" or "living citadel"! her fossil was so radioactive- as are others in the cedar mountain formation- it ended up leading to her discovery. higher resolution version under the cut!

Believe it or not, this was my second paleoart ever! Meet Pawpawsaurus, a nodosaur with a funny name who, tragically, was named after a fruit that did not evolve until millions of years after he went extinct. However, he can still enjoy ginkgo fruits, as shown here.

So I’ve been seeing a lot of paleo artists depicting dinosaurs with earlobes. But I’ve decided to be a mega troll and give Borealopelta turtle ears- which basically means that it’s just hidden under the skin. >:DD
Plus they’re too busy taking in that sweet natural sunlight to care about hearing your problems.
Jk jk I’m sure borealo loves u too. 💚

In light of me being back on Tumblr after years and years, have one of my best works yet: Struthiosaurus austriacus! Done as cover artwork for the abstract volume for the 92nd annual meeting of the Paläontologische Gesellschaft.
