Luang Prabang’s air of serenity is disturbed only at festival time. The most famous festivals last for days and inspire a carnival atmosphere that makes it easy to forget that these complex rituals held the very structure of the kingdom in place for centuries. Lao New Year in April is perhaps the town’s biggest festival, but near the end of the monsoon, two holidays – the boat races and the Festival of Lights – also bring Luang Prabang to a festive standstill. November 1 - I chase metaphors of mist

November 2 - if I could whisper a prayer to my creations--

November 3 - I sent you words*

November 4 - have you gone off chasing meaning

November 5 - time, time--

November 6 - some of the children i am afraid for:*

November 7 - see, i don’t want you to go, I want you to be*

November 8 - the question is never

November 9 - it is a funny thing, to have someone notice*

November 10 - something in her eyes, I saw

November 11 - I curl against the water

November 12 - I was not made to be my mother’s vengeance*

November 13 - Breathing will not always get easier

November 14 - I’ve learned not to measure time

November 15 - I’m never without eyes to see

November 16 - this is a call to the witches unburned*

November 17 - sometimes i realize

November 18 - what’s the use of hoping i can hold words

November 19 - Something’s calling tonight

November 20 - The corner of the library

November 21 - “think of the children” they say*

November 22 - I would shatter my name in a heartbeat

November 23 - some things have been flickering

November 24 - was i tired of the world? or was it only

November 25 - i have been running

November 26 - if you would mind, terribly

November 27 - i keep myself sheathed, balanced

November 28 - I am tired, scraping

November 29 - I am not in the mood

November 30 - I didn’t mean to know about the shadows
