Do you think Joe was the first partner that Taylor had ever really considered a friend before he was a lover and consciously considered their friendship throughout the relationship alongside their romance?
I’ve been listening to a lot of Lover lately and I noticed that she refers to their friendship several times, which isn’t something she’s really sung much about before Joe. I think she’s typically someone who really likes that spark/instant chemistry/obvious romantic tension and it’s not like that was necessarily absent with Joe, but it does seem like she forced herself to hold back on jumping into the romance a lot more at first because of the state she was in at the time. I feel like because of this time and who they both are, they formed a kind of truly intimate friendship that she hadn’t really had with a bf before. Obviously idk her at all lol but she says things like “it’s nice to have a friend”/“I hate accidents except when we went from friends to this” and (imo) she seems to have had a lot of respect for Joe’s character, intentions and integrity, which isn’t something she really ever got into about her past relationships, (she has often sung about having strong romantic feelings for someone but also knowing they weren’t the best/safest person).
The way she talks about little things like “save your dirtiest jokes for me” and “sit quietly by my side in the shade” and “have my back, yeah, every day” really paints a picture of a deeper foundation between two people who just liked each other and genuinely got on with each other beyond the sex and romance — they were happy cleaning up bottles together after the party was over (“I want your dreary Mondays, too”) and I guess this was just an excuse for me to talk about how devastating the peace/NYD mashup was to hear after all that — to become a stranger whose laugh she could recognise anywhere. 👍🏼 ok :)
Glad she seems happier now though !
i love how you started and ended this ask, because i was literally thinking, "you answered your own question" jfkasld. i do think it's really notable and sweet how she weaves their friendship and romance throughout, though, because it does indicate it was special and important to her. "he built a fire just to keep me warm"... he wanted nothing from her, except to know she was safe.
for me, those friendship parallels explain so much of why this relationship was precious to her:
no one wanted to play with me as a little kid, so i've been scheming like a criminal ever since to make them love me and make it seem effortless -> say my name and everything just stops, i don't want you like a best friend -> all of my enemies started as friends, help me hold onto you -> bridges burn, i never learn, at least i did one thing right -> it's nice to have a friend -> please don't ever become a stranger whose laugh i could recognize anywhere

Bejeweled always was about Joe, it's just the weird big accounts (secret sessioner accounts, I won't name who, I find extremely annoying) like to think they know it all cause they're pretentious, and because they were glorifying Joe, they won't admit it. Same with Renegade, she basically paints the picture he treats her like absolute shit ('you fire off missiles cause you hate yourself, but do you know you're damaging me?') Because his insecurity, and takes it out on her. Then whenever she was thinking of leaving him, he would do the hand squeeze thing (NYD call back) cause he was indecisive on what he wanted.
But Bejeweled is so obvious because it's the same shit she was writing on ME! That song we all laugh at. Instead of her trying to convince him why HE should choose her. Bejeweled is her choosing herself in the end and giving him a big reality check.
And like it never made sense to be about Calvin because even though she said it's throughout her life, she was with Joe for 7 YEARS.
Why the fuck (that these ppl have trouble comprehending) would she write 'don't put me in the basement, I want the penthouse of your heart' about Calvin, when they've been broken up for 7+ years/she was at her most famous, and gave her all the attention UP until he just got jealous in the end. That lyric means NOW because Joe was dismissing her.
Then her saying "I made you my world, I can reclaim the land" she literally moved to London to be with his ass, distanced from her friends, and changed everything about him, cooked for his whole cast in movies, and stayed with him when he would shoot instead of focusing on herself.
"Baby Doll" she calls him in ME and "baby love" in Bejeweled she has all these pet names and it's speaking present.
like Joe was always a fuckwit. Familiar breeds contempt doesn't make sense about Calvin either cause she was with him for 1 yr which is still honey moon phase, while Joe was with her 7
and calvin doesnt need taylor to buy him shoes. joes poor ass? yeah just like that 40k watch he wears she gave him

One thing that I’ve seen you point out time and again is that there’s only one story that fits the calamitous love narrative that Taylor has been focusing on since Lover. I would argue we got a hint of it starting with Getaway Car and NYD. The heavy trials and tribulations. The idea of Taylor feeling guilt and regret. What connects CIWYW to MAATHP to DBATC to Afterglow to Peace to Hoax to The Lakes to Evermore to Renegade to LSS to ITTG to Question to The Great War? I’m sure we could add in some others where it depends on your interpretation, like Daylight (maybe you ran with the wolves,) The Archer, Maroon, Coney Island, Paris, This is me Trying, even Paper Rings (I want your complications too.) And finally Dear Reader. I don’t understand why more people don’t see this. I just saw a Gaylor TikTok making fun of toes for thinking TGW is about a brief fight they had over Taylor thinking he cheated on her and how this makes her seem like the character from the Blank Space video, and they’re just fine with their fave being a maniac and Joe being a doormat. While, if you believe in Kaylor, all her dramatics are entirely justified and actually paint her in a heroic, if imperfect, light.
So basically I guess I’m saying you should point this out even more often. Because all the Gaylors who try to make half of rep, and all Lover and Midnights into songs about some other lover she’s had for the last 6+ years, a lover who has broad shoulders and was really something not just the idea of something, have absolutely nothing to say about all these lyrics about calamity, war (that she says they won,) and politics.
thank you for saying this. it is a real flagship theme for me and it sometimes leads me to impassioned spirals… it feels clear as day to me, quite frankly. all those songs you mention and the themes just feel so dang specific to their story and everything about it that we have felt and seen, such a grand progression, over these years. consistent and cutting, hauntingly beautiful and inspirational. and the only thing stopping people from realizing it is the reluctance to accept a few hard truths…
the truth is that i have a lot of thoughts on such topics including the one you mentioned but i always err on the side of speaking vaguely because my thoughts would probably be considered threatening to groups of people and agendas, and the drama i imagine would be a headache. plus, i haven’t been sure if such people are in the right headspace to consider them anyway. but your message gives me hope, anon! indeed, so many messages this era have given me hope. maybe i’ll try to put a little more into words going forward ☺️
heck i feel like at some point it merits a masterpost 🙈

The parallels between ootw and tvfn is also a very intriguing and seems almost intentional. Like if tvfn was written first why would she use those parallels to describe a guy who was polar opposite to jake. If jake introduced her to Polaroids or had Polaroid memories with him I think Taylor somehow would have sneaked those references at least in the short film. She even showed the guitar he gave her. She made CIWYW lyric video cover Polaroid and mentioned it in NYD because she and joe shared some fondness for it.
Take me away to you//take me home . I also read an article were Julien brunnetta(?) said harry was adamant about calling iicf 'if I could fly ' instead of 'for your eyes only.' Also on the childish thing, wasn't 1d releasing tvfn style pop music in their first two albums. It looks like she is trying to link him with pop like the way she used 'guitar' works for dear john.
But who knows.......maybe we're wrong maybe not. Its not like Taylor would come and say tvfn is about jake/harry/connor. I think it's ok to have different opinions on art unless you are crossing the line
I think it's ok to have different opinions on art unless you are crossing the line agree, and most of us (and everyone i've discussed music with here on my blog, i appreciate you all very much!) do tackle these concepts and subjects with genuine care for her, and respectfully, i think. we're not wildly spinning or fabricating, we're just having fun looking at the known information and the lyrical pictures she paints, and wondering about why she chooses to depict certain situations in specific ways!
part of analysis is laying pieces out and deciding for ourselves where they fit and how they tell the story. and as i've said, we also then make them completely our own with personal meaning! that's the magic of it all, it's her story however she intended it, and then it's part of us and our memories too. <3
(i'm only putting these under cuts because i talk a lot lol)
this is kind of topic adjacent, but it's very warm to me how she's reclaimed and reconnected to things, both on her own, and with joe and the love they've built and that healing process. the rep polaroids are so special.
the typewriter reference is such a powerful metaphor in the atw short film, the fact that he would give her an instrument that she then uses to write the story down, and to make it hers and her legacy, and i love how that connects directly to the guitar. little lived-in flourishes like that are part of what makes it affecting.
it's definitely interesting that there's no mention of polaroids specifically elsewhere on red (or photographs even? *except* the photo album on the counter where he's a little kid with glasses). there are so many other tangible pieces - lockets and keychains and handwritten notes and scarves. but it's like she keeps the pictures in her own mind. which, for me, also speaks quite a bit to maroon, the bruise of it, and the way she looks back at that.
"for your eyes only" is a famous song by sheena easton from a james bond movie of the same title, i always just though maybe there was a conflict! but you're right: "Songwriter Julian Bunetta talked to Rolling Stone about hearing If I Could Fly for the first time, stating "I remember when Harry first played it to me. That one I didn't write, but I remember when I first heard it. We were in Westlake Studio for a week. I kept asking why he wanted to call it 'If I Could Fly.' It's a great song, so it doesn't really matter what it's called, does it?" it's something i personally love about that song, that its title is its first line, and that while it isn't repeated, it shifts the meaning in a way. because the center isn't the intimacy shared with the other person - for their eyes only - it's the longing to go back to them. (full disclosure, if i could fly is, like, my second favorite song of their entire catalog, so i have Feelings.) it makes that lyric poignant and particularly vital - which is exactly why the similar one caught my attention in the very first night.
it does intrigue me that there seem to be links between tvfn and ootw, and of course taylor does repeat themes that aren't connected, or take on different meaning in new situations, so i don't want to make random parallels between completely unrelated things (unlike some genius annotators haha), BUT it's a case where i find it quite magnetic emotionally, because either that's intended, or she entirely reframed her experiences from one to the other. both are interesting to consider!
i think it's a pretty common opinion that hygtg itself is a nod to 1D's early music stylistically, and while tvfn is very tayloresque, sonically it wouldn't be out of place alongside tracks on take me home. message in a bottle definitely would too, it's classic pop of the early 2010s (complimentary!). like i said, it's just such a sweet pop song and she wasn't really pointing that type of innocent reminiscence at jg, everything with him is more mature and emotionally loaded. we for sure could be wrong on this one, but it doesn't make the connections less curious!

Regarding rep, I agree, but I still love it. I think it has some of Taylor's best world-creating. As requested, Sarah, here are my examples of good lines immediately followed by lines I don't like:
"My baby's fit like a daydream" - romantic and genius move dropping all the little london boy hints (when I like someone a lot, I start to talk like them too so I relate) // "Walking with his head down, I'm the one he's walking to" - a scene that makes me cringe, something that I think is really only cute if you're experiencing it.
My favorite line of the song, "I'm laughing with my lover, makin' forts under covers" and the following controversial classic, "Trust him like a brother" (personally it's not for me, but I don't think we need to rehash this debate, either you like it or you don't).
For some reason, I don't like the jet stream line, it's just kind of a sensitive ear hole thing for me.
In KOMH, I love the first 2 lines, I hate the baby line (like trying on clothes? Interesting choice of simile).
Delicate has "Dive bar on the East Side, where you at? / Phone lights up my nightstand in the black / Come here, you can meet me in the back" which I just love as it really paints a picture and "Dark jeans and your Nikes, look at you" which is just funny to me. It makes me think of all the crushes I had where I thought a boy was SO HOT and looking back now it was just some guy in a graphic tee and skinny jeans. The Bridge too: "Sometimes I wonder when you sleep, Are you ever dreaming of me?" Bridge city, "Enchanted" reference, need I say more? // "Sometimes when I look into your eyes, I pretend you're mine, all the damn time" the wording sounds off to me? I don't like all the "i" sounds and kinda hate the sometimes/all the time thing. Is it sometimes or all the time? I'm confused.
And I recognize it's exactly the point of the song, but I like the party parts and I don't like the following drama/shady parts. I really love how Taylor writes about partying in TIWWCHNT, it is SO Gatsby. I'm not a huge fan of the prechoruses.
This was a lot, but I hope this helps to support the thesis other anons proposed. (And to hopefully soothe the burn of rep slander, I hope you will accept a peace offering: NYD has the most consistently strong songwriting imo. There's no lines I don't like there!)
Mentally in order to soothe my reputation heart, there was a part of me that started to try to logic my way into you loving some lyrics but equally not liking others and trying to dive into the why of it all and perhaps it's because reputation is designed as an album with two faces of the same coin. That it's intentionally created to be simultaneously off-putting and raw or harsh contrasted precisely against a soft vulnerable underbelly. Especially because the song that most obviously exposes that underbelly is a song that you find zero fault with. This is what I tell myself amidst the SLANDER anyway. (Joking. Loving. I swear. /sweats nervously)
re: "You try on calling me baby like trying on clothes" // Unclear if it's because this line sort of kind of has a fashun reference and so I'm biased but I've always loved this line because it's such a Taylor-ism to combine two common turns of phrase and smush them together to create a new meaning. In this case I just think it's such a soft and novel way to describe the beginning stages of a relationship. Like those first few weeks/months where you're feeling Feelings but it's not The Time to say those three words yet so you're like "I ... Care? About you? A lot? A Lot. Haha. But only if you care a lot too I mean whatever it's fine ... But wait do you care about me a lot also? Pls tell me okthanksbye."
But otherwise I thank you very much for sharing your thoughts and being willing to do so. It's hard to put yourself on the line - esp when they are thoughts you're sure that the recipient will probably disagree with ;) I hope it's a testament to this space that you felt open enough to share and I'm grateful you did!

I don’t usually make resolutions for new year but I figured why not take the opportunity to set myself some little creative goals? One painting or drawing per month, write something every month (that is a loosey goosey one because word counts), and read one book per month. I can do more obviously, but that’s the goal. I used to read loads and I’ve fallen off the wagon, and I want to learn more about painting and drawing, which I can’t do if I don’t give myself the opportunity to fuck it up a bit here and there. Writing is THE love of my life (Brie comes in at a close second) and I’ve even been neglecting that, which means I’ve been neglecting my heart.
Gonna save this to my drafts as well so I can reblog it next NYD with how I got on. Maybe I’ll even have some art to share!

~1/1/2023~ Guess I can actually say it now - Happy 1st January 2023 ;) I ended up seeing the new year in as seem to be staying up late anyway, and decided that I would feel better being awake and expecting nearby fireworks rather than it waking me up or not being able to sleep for worrying about whether or not they’d be fireworks! It did work better tbh. Felt quite tired in the morning though - probably due to the extra anxiety the night before, but physically perhaps a little better. I had some Yule log for lunch that parentals were keen to get rid of as they seem to be back to ‘diet talk’, which I’ve come to expect around this time of year, but still wish it wasn’t a thing. I went out in the afternoon for a walk along the seafront and into Rustington - managed to find a seat in Costa, though it was touch and go as seems like it was the place to be on NYD! Filled out my diary for next week and did some therapy journaling. Got back to parentals and packed up for them to drive me home. Returned to Christmas bauble painting in the evening, which passed a lot of time. Watched this free film on Amazon Prime - Nanny, that L recommended - it was pretty good, but a bit too freaky and horrory in places - especially towards the end… 🦄 #instadaily #instablog #update #mentalhealth #dissociativeidentitydisorder #cptsd #autism #traumarecovery #edrecovery #anxiety #chronicillness #disability #pots #potsie #dysautonomia #positivevibes #recovery #actuallyautistic #newyearsday #nationaltrust #bodiam #bodiamcastle #nature #naturelove #natureseeker #autumnwinter #path #treelove (at Bodiam Castle) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cm6JDpZKkgFbtarmRfM2vXQHgc1TAZzFqaAcw40/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Izzy Stradlin & Johnny Thunders: An essay in the making lol
Okay, time for the conspiracy theories over here. Nah, just kidding but let's talk about the connections between Izzy Stradlin and Johnny Thunders. Here's my take:
I'm currently reading "Too Much Too Soon", the authorized biography of the New York Dolls by British journalist Nina Antonia, who was also close friends with Johnny. The thing is that I can't help but find a lot of similarities between Izzy and Johnny (of course, taking into consideration how much of an influence was Thunders in Izzy's life, not only on a musical level).
So, let's start analyzing some facts about Johnny's life and observations from the people who knew him. First, he didn't grow up with his dad, since the latter split when Johnny was just a baby and he was raised by his mom and his older sister.
From an early age, he developed an interest in fashion, rock music, and especially, in Keith Richards. So much, that he dyed his hair jet black and asked his sister to cut his hair in the same style as Keith’s. During his teenage years, Johnny made a reputation as a regular on the NY music scene of the late 60s and was praised for his unique appearance. He didn’t look like any of his peers and people often wondered where he got such rare and incredibly interesting pieces of clothing since they couldn’t be found at any of the local thrift shops. Turns out, he bought his clothes at the women’s department and customized them with the help of his mom and sister.
In terms of his personality, people described him as a quiet, shy, and reserved guy, except when he was on stage and you could see him jumping around and living his best life. Also, he started dabbling in drugs pretty much since puberty, beginning with pot, and then experimenting with LSD, quaaludes, coke, meth, etc., until getting to the ultimate killer: heroin.
Also, alongside with frontman of the NYD, David Johansen, Johnny was responsible for writing the most important songs of the band, as well as being praised as a songrwriter. Same as Keith Richards, he was keen on simple and precise compositions and focused mostly on bluesy sounds and nods to old school rock n’ roll with heavy influences from the greats Muddy Waters, Bo Diddley, John Lee Hooker, Chuck Berry, Little Richard, etc.
.....
Got all that? Okay, now let’s go with our Indiana boy.
At this point we have pretty much nailed down Izzy’s background and biography, right? We know that he was raised by his mom and his grandma Elizabeth back there in Lafayette. He has two younger brothers, Kevin and Joe. His dad split and left for Florida where he remarried and had two other kids.
Same thing, from a very early age he became interested in music, mainly thanks to his grandma, who was a drummer on a local jazz band. He was also greatly impacted by Don Kirschner’s tv show where lots of the most important musical acts from the 70s made appearances. He definitely saw the Dolls there and they became one of his favorites.
We still don’t know many details about his life as a teenager in boring Lafayette, except the little that he, Axl, or other close sources have shared. Izzy started smoking cigarettes and pot, firecrackers, and the usual soft drugs that all of us have taken during high school years at one time or another. We know that he liked skating, playing drums, and drawing, among other stuff.
Things start to get interesting when he gets to Los Angeles. Being Keith & Johnny MAJOR influences on him, he dyed his hair jet black and styled it the same way as Johnny in the early 70s. Long, straight, and looking like raven feathers. So, if you are a hardcore fan of the NYD and one afternoon you casually bump into Izzy down the Sunset Blvd in 1980, you’d highly lose your shit and think you’re seeing Johhny Thunders himself in front of you.
Also, like Johnny, Izzy didn’t start playing guitar. He was a drummer, then a bass player, and finally a guitarist. The difference in Johnny’s case is that he first played bass and then switched to guitar.
Now, concerning clothing, Izzy also brought attention for his curious looks, being one of the first people in Hollywood to wear creepers (according to Hollywood Rose founder and close friends with Izzy, Chris Weber). Same thing happened in New York to Johnny when he decided to subvert the local style by wearing chunky shoes and platforms. Not saying that he was the creator of the look (neither was Izzy), but they certainly inspired some people to do the same and express themselves through fashion. Izzy also used to customize his clothes, DIY some of them, make jewelry, thrift flips, etc.
On top of that, as a little tribute to his idol Johnny, Izzy embraced the color pink by wearing it in jackets that he spray-painted, socks, shirts, etc. Mix that with his ivory skin, dark hair, and facial features and you have another Mr. Thunders right there (And they DO look like they’re related... as well as Keith, Ronnie Wood, Sami Yaffa, Nasty Suicide, Tracii Guns, etc. On the fandom we call that breed of rockstar: “Emo Rat Boy” lol).
Another thing is that Izzy’s drug of choice was smack and as it also eventually happened to Johnny, it made him all doom and gloom, moody, and vanished the once happy and joyous spirit, both on stage and in real life.
Even in the dynamic between Axl and Izzy, you can see the same chemistry and looks of Johnny and David Johansen back in the day. Even the essence of the New York Dolls as a whole is visible during the formation days of GNR. Just look at Arthur Kane and Duff McKagan, and this is just a little example.
To finish this, around 1990-1991, Izzy is seen playing the same guitar model that Johnny is most known for, Gibson Les Paul Junior in yellow. And in the late 90s-early 2000s (I’m not exactly sure when) he made a cover of “Do You Love Me?”, really, but really inspired by Thunders.
And that’s all, folks. THANK YOU FOR COMING TO MY TED TALK.
PLEASE LIKE AND REBLOG IF YOU ENJOYED IT!
UPDATE: @roger-taylors-car please illustrate this with pictures. I can’t do it because my internet connection is SHIT. Thanks and excuse my French. Much love!!!

i do love the picture she's painted of swiftwyn through folkmore and now renegade (and on some lover stuff). no more of that fairy tale angel boyfriend bullshit. these are two people with demons who actively do the work to be together. and their relationship appears so much richer than "we're in lurveeee 😻." they are what fighting for love at 6 a.m. really looks like.
Well I think Rep had flashes of that with some insecurities “I don’t want to miss you like the other girls do” and comparing him to her exes and ALL of NYD. But they were in they honeymoon period tbh so obviously it was rose tinted.

Do you think the Willow music video is a re-working of the Ready For It music video? There are so many parallels except RFI there was more blue and in Willow there is gold.
"Deep blue but you painted me golden."
RFI x Willow are first tracks on rep/evermore
NYD x Evermore are last tracks on rep/evermore
I don't know. Just thinking outloud...
I’m not sure I would say it’s a reworking. Honestly there’s a lot of symbolism going on in willow that I’m not ready to unpack, or haven’t had the time to, but in relation to ready for it, I immediately saw parallels... this was a rough draft on my immediate thoughts (x). I think there’s much more to it though.
