Edward Nygma x Oswald Cobblepot x Third Person Potential 😍😜😂

Consider this: another person involved with Edward and Oswald, someone with a crush on both of them, both times requited. It could be utter chaos! 😜

Oswald "life only gives you one true love" Cobblepot, who's already in an exited state because of his crush on Ed, having to question his mother's words.

Meanwhile Edward "I could never love you" Nygma is questioning everything. He loves Oswald, a man! But he likes him just as much as this other person.

If the other person was

a) a man or non-binary, Ed would be in even more denial: yes, he likes Oswald, who isn't a woman, but he also likes this other person who isn't either, and since romantic love is usually only between two people, that must mean that he doesn't really like either of them that way, right?

b) If on the other hand the other person was a woman (I haven't finished the show, but I read some people say that Oswald is/could be bi), Ed would focus on her and inevitably notice the way she looks at Oswald, which just so happens to be similar to the way Ed looks at him.

Upon seeing that Oswald likes her too, Ed being the compulsory heterosexual bi disaster (affectionate) that he is, wouldn't notice that his jealousy goes both ways: being directed at Oswald for having her affection yet also at her for having Oswald's attention.

c) on a third note: They could also just be happy and once they got together I think they'd be unstoppable.

Regardless of who the last person is, these two thrive from being loved by one person alone, make that two people and they're over the moon! 🥰

Summary: Having reserved a spot on the submarine that Ed and Oswald are building to escape Gotham, Barbara Kean becomes a spectator to and unwitting participant in the evolution of their relationship. She is not happy about it.

This is a gift for @arcanemoody as part of the Nygmobblepot Haven Discord server's Secret Friends Holiday Gift Exchange. Here was the prompt I received: "I'm a sucker for Ed and Oswald as friends awkwardly on the cusp of romance, particularly if it's post-season 5, where the emotional stakes are higher because of everything they went through before. Alternatively, I'm also a sucker for them being Morticia and Gomez Addams and basically making out everywhere in public, regardless of who has to share space with them."

I sort of combined those two elements, though it's set during rather than after season 5. (And I haven't watched any Addams Family, though I'm familiar enough that I get the idea...)

Fic summary: Jim and Oswald agree that the relationship between Edward Nygma and Lee Thompkins is a disaster waiting to happen, so they come up with a desperate plan: plant evidence that they're having a secret affair with each other to spark jealousy in Ed and Lee and draw them away from each other. Their plan is both complicated and helped along by simultaneous crises involving the brothers Valeska…

Notes: This fic was largely inspired by two things: reading a fic with a similar premise where Jim and Oswald stage a public relationship to try to make Ed and Lee jealous, prompting the thought "that's not how they would do that"; and this insightful Tumblr post by @annienonmouse.

I also want to pay tribute to what I consider to be the definitive manifesto for temporary-but-meaningful Jim/Oswald (or "Gobblepot") with Ed/Oswald (Nygmobblepot) and Jim/Lee as endgame: moonlight/sunrise by @vndooms (barnabashale on AO3). You should definitely read it if that's your jam (as it is mine).

Many, many thanks to @hellostuffedtiger, who isn't even in this fandom, for reading the first few chapters and holding my hand through the process of figuring out how to invent an actual plot, which isn't something I normally do.

I will attempt to post chapters on a weekly schedule. The first four chapters are written and most of the rest have been outlined in detail, so I might actually be able to keep to it (job permitting).

Okay, I've let two Gotham works in progress sit for months without an update. This is one of them; as of today I've added a new chapter. This shorter sequence directly follows Turn Your Face to Mine, and it's meant as a comic follow-up given how serious TYFTM was.

The moment seemed to stretch before Edward reached out for him and hugged him to his chest. Oswald felt himself breathe as Edward’s breathing hit the side of his head.

“ Dum,” Edward said quietly, “ It means hug. It also means to hide. Domni makes a request, hug me… hide me. ”

“ Domni…” Oswald echoed, and was pleasantly surprised when Edward held him tighter.
