I haven’t been to Barnes and Noble in person for almost two years. I went with my mom last night to one. I couldn’t help but notice the abundance of occult and witchcraft in every single section of the re-organized store, in every single genre, displayed upon the smaller tables, and even columns. It shouldn’t surprise me with how people are in world now, but it was still a surprise. I’ll pray for them.

As is typical at this time of year, the shop has been quite busy. Someone left behind a book bag from another bookstore yesterday, and I am posting it here in case the owner would like to retrieve it. Meanwhile, I would suggest that everyone visit Ray's Occult Books. I am sure it is a better bookstore than this one.

Are you a history nerd? What kind of things do you like to read?
my major research project senior year was about the anthropology of monsters in narratives. i love reading anything related to the history of witchcraft (lmao one of my college papers compared the occult practices in salem to safed), urban legends, folklore, and mythology. just call me rupert giles!
i am also a fan of jewish history. my paternal grandparents grew up speaking yiddish, so reading how the language survived in OUTWITTING HISTORY by aaron lansky holds a special place in my heart. as i also do the occasional bit of family research, i use yivo as a common resource, because, ya know, ashkenazi.
(anything authored by ilan stavans is a great resource on sephardic culture!)

A seasoned monster hunter walks into an occult bookstore, then immediately walks out after seeing a wall of funko pops, Harry Potter merch, plushies of cthulhu and baphomet and the flying spaghetti monster, tarot cards with Supernatural characters on them, Dr Strange 2 and Thor 4 blind boxes, Hasbro ouija boards, Magic the Gathering decks, this exact t-shirt
vape cartridges with names like "eye of newt" and "witch's brew," heavy metal vinyls from modern bands you've never heard of, zodiac sign enamel pins, DnD handbooks with specialty dice that are white with red splotches that look like blood, the 2 season blu-ray boxset of The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina (from the creators of Riverdale), a whole shelf dedicated to Ghostbusters tie-ins
a Stephen King section that takes up twice as much space as the HP Lovecraft section, Star Wars legos because the only UFO set doesn't sell well
shelves upon shelves of Wicca and Pagan books for teens, mood rings, Hobby Lobby dreamcatchers, a bargain bin full of Scooby Doo DVDs, a bunch of those cardboard -ology books
and the kind of "herbal supplements" you'd find at the gas station checkout counter.
