I went to a lot of comic cons in college. My impression was that most of the creators were… creatives. People that spend long hours in front of a drawing board or a typewriter, building worlds out of the aether that is their brain(s). That’s illustration to me. Physically manifesting the metaphysical, moment by moment. Picking the best moments for each beat of the story.

I -flat out- went to school to be a comic book artist. I just cannot fathom feeding my wife and my boys by manifesting the images in my head into a monthly income. But hey, that’s me. Your work is a continuous source of inspiration and joy for me.

My eldest son loves the power rangers. He he drew the green ranger in pencil on a canvas. He then painted the drawing with acrylic. He had a full-on meltdown when the painting didn’t look as good as he wanted it to look.

I sat with him and explained the process of creating comic book artwork. From blueline to publication. I spoke with him about the value of perseverance, and the value of using mixed media. He waited a day and then outlined his painting with Sharpie. He BEAMED with pride when he showed me the final product. Made me so, so happy.

Rodin was a hack. Dude had no deadlines, and no narrative outline.

Keep being awesome. You are an inspiration to me, to my boys, and to generations to come.

I am so glad you are encouraging your son to make art and enjoy it, and it is great that you find so much to appreciate in comic art and have so much respect for those who make it. We all truly appreciate it.

A few thoughts, if I may.

If you want your son to understand and appreciate mixed media, you might want to move him away from using markers like Sharpies.

If you are concerned about the longevity of the original art, I regret to inform you alcohol based markers such as Sharpies and Copics are not lightfast. That is to say, they fade on exposure to UV light. They do not use pigmented inks, they use dyes.

The fading may not happen today, it may not happen tomorrow, but it will happen sooner than you would like. Many well-known cartoonists who used Sharpies on their original comic pages, or did commissions sketches using them, have seen the art fade markedly (pun intended) over time.

Here's what that looks like.

Try to switch to pigment based markers, such as those from Faber Castell, or go wild and learn to use a crow quill.

Also, while I truly appreciate your kind compliments, it's not necessary to do that at another artist's expense.

Rodin was the complete opposite of the definition of "hack".

A hack is a term originally used for one who works on tight deadlines to publisher specifications, and produces poor quality work.

That's not Rodin.

Rodin was a spectacular talent who earned his place in the canon. He came from humble beginnings and spent the first two decades of his career sculpting decorative architectural elements. He obtained his place as a fine artist after many years of struggle.

And even then, a fine artist often works to deadline, as there are salons and exhibit specs that must be met, as well as the requirements of patrons and clients, to say nothing of the grueling formal training aspiring artists were subjected to in the ateliers.

His work often contains strong narrative elements as well, as evidenced by his design for The Gates of Hell.

In fact, for most of the history of modern art, narrative elements were considered anti-art. As someone who prefers 19th century genre art, this attitude is bummerific.

The term "hack" comes from the 17th century term "Grub Street Hacks".

Back in the day writers did not get royalties. Bookstores usually published books and paid writers a flat fee and never another penny, which resulted in a lot of very broke writers, or writers who came from wealthy families who could afford to scorn the sordid topic of coin.

Grub Street was located in London where a lot of book publishers were housed next to brothels and flophouses. It's now known as Milton Street. This area was the location of the lowliest of the low publishing joints.

The great Samuel Johnson was once a Grub Street Hack.

I've just read the most wonderful book about Samuel Johnson which has many amazing details about the development of publishing. The Club: Johnson, Boswell and The Friends Who Shaped an Age. My highest recommendation, though some will be very upset by attitudes and behaviors toward the women in these men's lives.

Johnson, despite many years of poverty, was able to escape after his work eventually earned him a royal pension. When well-thought of creative people couldn't make royalties, they were supported by wealthy patrons and the royal pension system.

While I don't have a formal education, I spent many years doing research for auction catalogues and ghost writing articles about art history, which is why I am annoyingly pedantic about it all to this day.

Since Ruby took like, ten second of self-doubt and some major (but overall shor) torture before just committing suicide, I can't help but think she must have had these feelings for years, buried deep down. It's eitehr that or the Ever After massively amplifies feelings. Or the writers are just hacks who cannot hack it. Thoughts?

I'm 95% "The writers don't know how to tackle a subject this sensitive and gave us such an extreme reaction for the drama" and 5% "There's a little evidence to suggest that this has been plaguing Ruby for at least a couple of days, but that still requires the audience to basically headcanon a conflict that never truly existed on screen." I say there's a little because Ruby was obviously stressed during Volume 8 too (which, again, only covered about 48 hours), however, I don't think that serves our Volume 9 arc well because:

Ruby is concerned with totally different stuff now. In Volume 8 she was upset over the confirmation that Salem knew Summer and the theory that she killed her as a result of her grimm experiments. Ruby is also frustrated that they rejected Ironwood's plan, but for two-ish days no one was able to come up with something better: "Then nothing has changed! We’re in the exact same spot we were yesterday. Arguing what to do while the Kingdom waits to die." While certainly connected to the overall repetition of Ruby throwing herself into situations that she then can't easily resolve, it's notable that she's not upset that she hasn't come up with a solution, but that the group hasn't. This is not presented as Ruby buckling under leadership because, frankly, no one is expecting her to lead. She chooses to make choices like starting the Ace Ops fight, but beyond that she's looking to others to problem solve, as Jaune, Oscar, and Ozpin do by Volume's end. So Volume 8 gives us "I'm crumbling under the knowledge that Salem killed my mom and I'm annoyed that we, as a group, haven't solved this horrific, time-sensitive problem." Then Volume 9 gives us, "I'm not thinking at all about Mom - look at me give up a keepsake of hers without a second thought! - and I'm crumbling under this sudden belief that everyone has always demanded that I solve all our problems." It's hard to say this has been building for a long time when what Ruby is stressed about keeps changing from Volume to Volume, even episode to episode. We start Volume 9 with her faltering due to Penny's death, but her breakdown comes about due to leadership. It's all too muddled to say this has been a years long problem in the making.

Much more simply, my second issue is that Ruby (like many other characters) doesn't keep consistent in her emotions either. Not just about what she's upset over, but her actually being upset. Volume 8 presented her mini-breakdown as something Ruby overcame - she gets upset on the staircase, but then they do come up with a plan and save "all" of the Kingdom, acting confident in their execution of this rescue - and though there's a major setback in regards to them falling/losing the Relics, Ruby only takes a second to cry about that then she becomes a part of Volume 9's early gags. Yes, her depression increases as the Volume goes on, getting more extreme the closer we get to her drinking that tea, but considering how much she's fluctuated and that her time in the Ever After has only been a day or so... that's too much too fast to justify her suddenly attempting suicide. All told, the content with ANY evidence from Ruby's depression covers about 4 days, maximum.

So yeah, I think RT massively dropped the ball on this one, though as always this is an easy situation for fans to project on. Anyone happy with RWBY's writing can easily headcanon that yeah, she's been feeling these emotions for an age - she must have because otherwise the suicide attempt doesn't make sense and RT wouldn't write something that doesn't make sense. See how that logic works? - and every moment that's even somewhat relavent can be re-read as a supposed buildup, regardless of what Ruby was upset about or whether she was presented as bouncing back almost immediately.

Plus, the nature of mental health means that ANY characterization technically fits. Ruby is bubbly all the time? Well, people with depression learn to hide it and overcompensate. Ruby appears to immediately bounce back? Again, she's playing a part. She was upset about thing A and then that changed to thing B and now we're on thing J? Don't you understand how all of this compounds and it's the sheer, overwhelming nature of everything she's been through that resulted in this? Because we understand that in real life depression is a complicated, often silent beast, people are tempted to map that onto the story, thereby justifying any version of the arc that we end up with. There's technically no wrong way to write it because there's no "right" way to be depressed. My problem is that this isn't real life. It's a story and we have expectations for how stories will differ from reality in order to serve their function as compelling entertainment. I don't want to go, "Oh, well Ruby was obviously grappling with depression this whole time and it was just hidden from us because that's one realistic means of depicting it. How many times has someone said, 'I had no idea' after learning about a suicide attempt?" But Ruby is our protagonist, the perspective through which we experience the entirety of the show, so keeping this hidden from the audience doesn't do anything except make it come across as a badly written, arguably insensitive arc. This is not real life. Ruby is not a real person with real feelings she may consciously or unconsciously be keeping from others. Ruby is a fiction whose purpose is to convey something to us, the audience, which means that outside of deliberate twists, a story that goes, "This was always occurring, you just never got to see it on screen" is rarely going to have that come across well.

i dont get it. You always come up with some great reasonse and evidences to why penny would come back but always added delutional in the end.

Why even bother doing all of those reserches if you dont belive then?

I guess it's for the joke but also a lack of confidence aha ! I've seen a lot of people saying that they would rather see Penny not coming back at all after Volume 8, and people talking about Penny revival theories are a bit attacked sometimes by others who think it's stupid, that her arc is done, that it's dumb and being delusional. Good thing I haven't had anyone like that so far here (don't want to deal with it anyway aha !), but I guess it's also a way to avoid that. Saying that it might be delusional is also a way to explicitely say that as much as I'd love to happen, I stay open to everything and I just don't want people to attack me for theorizing about it aha.

But if you want any confirmation, yeah I wouldn't write so much analysis and find so much references/allusions if I didn't believe them, I do believe seriously that there is a big chance for Penny to be able to come back after everything we got from Volume 9 and various allusions to different characters (as I mentionned, Pinocchio, Astroboy, or the Iron Giant). I try to find as much serious and tangible reasons to explain why, and I think so far we have a lot of them so it's definitely not a theory coming from nowhere xD But I know I might also be a bit obsessed when it comes to things I like and believe in, so adding the "delusional" word kinda defuse that- (I also truly think it's funny to see people sad over Penny's death talking about being delusional all the time because we're in denial aha, so yeah it's half a joke I guess)

Anyway, all of this to say that it's also hard because when it comes to theories, because we can have many options : there are just fun and cool theories, and there are also theories that are almost canon since they really reach to something that could really happen (an example : people theorizing that Penny would be hacked based on the intro of Volume 8, we couldn't be sure until we saw it on screen, but we knew at 90% it was going to happen). At this point Penny's revival is neither of them, even if we do find many reasons for her to come back, I think we're missing some parts for people to truly start to believe she could come back, like a confirmation that she could come back and not some weird allusions open to interpretation like we got in Volume 9. So far it's about interpretation and analysis, even if for me there are still a lot of evidence but yeah it's still hard to say if she'll come back or not. There's a strong possibility, but it cannot be confirmed yet until we get to Volume 10 or 11 (especially when we see Pietro and Winter again I mean).

That's why I add the delusional part, because it can't be confirmed yet, but once we get more elements oooh boy I might be more confident about this whole thing :]

So now that we’ve gotten the full details of the virus hack Watts put in Penny iterated to us a few times, and thus narratively ‘set up’, I think we can actually get a pretty good idea as to how this will play out:

Despite Team RWBY and co.’s efforts, Penny will fully succumb to the virus. She will go to the academy. She will descend to the vault, likely accompanied by Watts and/or Ironwood. She will raise her hand to open the Vault...

...and nothing will happen.

Because as we’ve seen multiple times, Hacked!Penny cannot use the Maiden Powers. Subverting her free will seals the powers away, and the Vault will not recognize Hacked!Penny as the Winter Maiden.

This is where we’ll get Watts’ true villainous breakdown, and possibly one for Ironwood too. Because for all of his supposed genius, there has always been one thing that was simply inconceivable to Watts: That Penny is a person and cannot truly be controlled through her mechanical body, and by extension neither can the Maiden Powers. And for Ironwood, all of his precious ‘control’ fizzles out into nothing. Because at the end of the day, he can’t actually force Penny to open the vault. She is not under his control. It provides the most fitting conclusion to Watts’ villain roll and further sets up Ironwood’s downfall.

Oh, and then maybe Ruby drops in, shoots Watts in the face and kicks Jimmy’s ass for all the shit they put her maybe-girlfriend though. Maybe Weiss joins in too. Don’t really really have any evidence for that one, I just think it’d be awesome.

Penny and Winter as Symbolic Human Machines

So honestly, I’m really impressed by how well done the ending of RWBY Volume 8 was with regard to character arcs being fulfilled, especially for Penny and Winter. I’ve seen a lot of takes, some that I somewhat agree with, and some that I just don’t, that Penny’s death was “bad writing,” and I think that, subjectivity of what constitutes bad writing aside, this is ignoring a lot of aspects of V7/V8 that made for a very compelling narrative, and feels heavily based in just people wanting Penny to not have died.

And I get this! Penny is one of my favorite characters and I’m very sad that she died; however, I really actually loved how fitting her death was for her story and the broader story of RWBY as a whole, so I wanted to do a write-up of my whole rant on this so that people could read it and see my thought process for why this only made me love Penny’s writing more. I’m not necessarily going to ascribe value to the writing itself in this analysis, as that is highly subjective, but I am biased so that’ll shine through some.

V7 through V8 had a lot of moments that frankly I hadn’t picked up on right up until the end that worked to build a dynamic interplay between Penny and Winter’s characters. Specifically, Penny's role is of a literal robot becoming less of a machine in the thematic sense and more of a person throughout, contrasting with Winter, who, while she is helping Penny realize herself as more of a person and less of a tool, is going through the opposite experience herself. This is essentially textual - it’s explicitly said by Winter herself in less words during the Maiden power transfer scene in V8E14.

When we as the audience reconnect with Winter at the start of V7, she is firmly entrenched as Ironwood’s confidante and second-in-command, serving as a face of the Atlas military as it squeezes Mantle. It’s safe to say that not many Mantle citizens like her very much, but she is insulated from this and continues to follow orders without regard for the welfare of the people. Ironwood at this point is already extremely authoritarian, even though he hasn’t graduated to full on dictatorship and declared martial law yet, and his will is also imposed on her through bringing her into the fold with the chief purpose of grooming (god this word feels grossly fitting given their dynamic) her to become the next Winter Maiden.

Winter, despite holding a a significant level of power and authority due to her military rank, has very little agency in this decision. She insists that her choice to take up the duty as Ironwood ordered is something she’s grown into and chosen, but it’s alarmingly clear that this is not the case; nearly every action she takes in V7 is still fully in the purview of Atlas (read: Ironwood)’s goals. I would go so far as to suggest that Ironwood giving her this position within the military after she escapes her father’s influence is intentionally conditioning her to view him as the sole way out of an abusive situation, and to disguise the fact that this new situation is just as abusive as the first below the surface.

Penny’s role in V7 is completely in opposition to this; while she is still theoretically under the control of the Atlas military, she is presented as the Protector of Mantle and seems to be beloved by the people. Our immediate image of her in Atlas is one of emotion and caring; she is overjoyed to see her friends from Beacon again, and this continues throughout the volume as she talks about what it means to be a person with them, Ruby and Winter especially. When things start going wrong and she is accused of killing people through the doctored footage from the rally, she is horrified at the prospect of being seen as a monster and continues to make every decision with the aim of protecting everyone around her, even at the expense of what her “duty” to Atlas might be. It’s clear that she is growing into her own agency, rather than being beholden to what Ironwood wants for her, and this helps prove to herself that she is her own person, not simply a tool of the military, not a machine.

The climactic scene of V7 takes these two character arcs running in strained parallel and drives a wedge between them, even as they battle a common enemy side by side. Winter’s devotion to Atlas (read: Ironwood) results in self-destructive tendencies, uncaring for her personal survival if it would further a goal that she ultimately and ironically does not truly believe in. Penny, however, begins to entirely shake this duty, risking even the Maiden power going to Cinder if it means saving Winter from dying. To her, personal feelings (ding ding ding!) and personal friendships mean more than duty to a state, or even (as we see later) her own well-being. Self destructive tendencies aside, this loyalty to people she earnestly cares about, who earnestly care about her, is loaded with symbolism that separates her from the metaphor of machine.

The result of the V7 finale reinforces the track the two of them are on; Winter, having been molded into a machine of the military, fails in her duty, while Penny, who has begun to recognize herself more and more as a person, succeeds at keeping the power from Cinder. She still has a massive amount of self-doubt and deep-seated fear that she doesn’t count as a person, but the Maiden power, being the perfect thematic symbol of “maidenhood”, goes to her, proving her to be a “real girl” and reinforcing the ongoing narrative. Winter, battling her own mixed feelings over being chosen for the power, never questions this; it’s clear that she, too, recognizes that Penny “was always the real Maiden, while [she] was the machine.” This also reinforces Penny’s narrative being heavily trans-coded, but I think that’s pretty obvious and doesn’t need to be reiterated. The two of them part sides here, one remaining with the Atlas military and one actively rebelling against it.

As Ironwood starts going off the deep end at the end of V7 and throughout V8 and starts sacrificing everyone around him to fuel his own narrow and tyrannical view of how to save Atlas, Winter simply...falls in line. She is continually forced to follow harsher and harsher orders, and any choices she makes as part of that, with only two exceptions, still are entirely in service to Ironwood. She has become, in essence, a machine locked into a set path, a path she, conflicted as she may be, follows all the way up to a choice she cannot abide - mass murder. Even orders that would result in her sister’s closest friends’ deaths she follows unquestioningly - it’s unclear whether she would have actually gone through with it, since the option is taken off the table by forces outside her control, but she certainly says as much in her conversation with Marrow. Only the prospect of annihilating the entire city of Mantle finally snaps her off the track Ironwood has set her on, making her recognize that all of this has never been for Atlas at all, but for Ironwood’s own ego. Fittingly, finally seeing Ironwood as her enemy and not a savior, she is tasked with taking him down herself.

Contrasting this, Penny’s role in V8 is entirely one of rebellion. The entire volume is her building her agency more and more, making decisions based on what she thinks is right and what she values. She rarely listens to any one person telling her what to do; even her father, who she loves dearly, isn’t able to make her do something when her sense of justice is on the line. Ironwood no longer has his hold on her for the most part; any attempt at manipulating her into doing something against her own morals is met with defiance, supported by her friends’ love for her. She has to be outright hacked to be forced into doing his bidding, and she fights this all the way down, her own inherent personhood pushing back against this attempt to dehumanize her. In this sense, even her becoming organic symbolizes this; she and the people she cares about defy this dehumanization of her, finding a way to free her from the last remaining vestiges of Atlesian influence and further reclaiming her own agency.

And what does she do with that agency when she is faced with oblivion? She simultaneously affirms it by making her final choice in a desperate situation, defying Cinder’s attempt to rip her power away, and also gifts it in the form of the Maiden power to the woman who she is watching attempting to also shake the shackles of Atlas, symbolically showing Winter her own inherent humanity. This decision, though dire, is in recognition of what is most important to her: her friends. Even believing half of them are dead, she gives up her life to ensure the rest survive. In the final moment she has with Winter, she reassures her that she won’t be really gone: the memory of her choice and who she is as a person will live on through Winter’s continued choices, through her agency.

In the end, neither of them were machines; just two hurt people fighting back against a brutal world that sought to strip their agency away. The tragedy in this conclusion, that that brutal world took one of their lives away, is fought just as defiantly. Penny knows that gifting the power in her soul to Winter means that her death won’t be meaningless, that her agency will last beyond her mortality and might result in the world finally being freed from the threat of destruction. It’s because of hope, not despair, that she makes her final choice.

He literally had them amputate and replace his injured arm with a questionable prosthetic within hours of injury. -He degloved his hand the nerves would have been destroyed and utterly useless. That really isn't a sign of anything.

Agree to disagree, anon.

Atlas has extremely advanced medical technology, and therefore we cannot simply assume his arm was completely useless. He had received medical care before returning to his office, likely with the intention of further care in the following days. The injury had been given initial treatment and his arm was in a supportive cast and sling, so it seemed their intended treatment approach was not as extreme as amputation.

We also know that Jaune can literally heal broken bones and otherwise-fatal impalements. 

Ironwood makes the decision to amputate and swiftly replace his arm after his initial plan to escape goes sideways. He does it within hours of his arm being injured, and the replacement prosthetic is definitely not up-to-standards compared to even the limbs of the Atlas Knights. It has exposed wiring and structures, as opposed to the protective plating that is normal for artificial limbs.

We also have CRWBY discussing how that action symbolized Ironwood’s “loss of humanity”. I know there has been some discussion in the fandom about Ableism and the idea of prosthetics as “inhuman”. I think the intention isn’t that “Cybernetics are bad” but rather an examination of Ironwood’s own damaging mentality. 

Our Tinman believes that emotions and humanity are a weakness. He argues that Salem’s inhumanity gives her an advantage, and his overall story has involved him advocating for removing the Human Element in various fashion. First it was automated military forces, and Penny who is a PERSON with a SOUL but who Ironwood increasingly dehumanizes through treating her as a machine and not a person. And through his own attitude towards his body and those of his subordinates.

Ironwood replaces with machinery anything he considers “damaged” or “weak” in himself. He seeks to destroy his own heart and his humanity, believing these will make him stronger. He is wrong, and we see how it is merely a coping mechanism for a deeply troubled man that has never been given the things he needs to truly address his trauma.

Ironwood deals with a damaged limb by simply chopping it off. He deals with a badly injured subordinate by having her placed into a exoskeleton. He deals with a robotic subordinate that is a person rebelling against him by ordering an ENEMY to hack her. He deals with allies challenging his plans by ordering them arrested. 

James Ironwood is a deeply flawed and incredibly damaged man, that has internalized the absolute worst ideals of his kingdom. He is a man that has never learned healthy coping mechanisms, and never allowed himself to actually heal from his physical, emotional, or mental scars. He carries his burdens alone, but also causes considerable harm to everyone around him in his desperation to maintain control. 

He is, in short, his absolute worst enemy.

RWBY VOLUME 8 EPISODE 5 SPECULATION AFTERMATH!!!

Hello Hello Hello!!! XD Another Week........and ANOTHER episode of RWBY is out!!!! Sorry I’m a bit late but let’s dive right in and see what I got RIGHT and what I Definetly got WRONG from my Speculation post!!

-Ok following what happened this weeks episode I will be keeping what I put in my last speculation post onto next weeks post, considering none of the story points my speculations were based on happened this week but may happen next episode instead. I have no doubt I will still get a lot wrong again but I will still be excited in anticipation!!! XD

-Ok I’ll first start and say that this is my new favorite episode for this volume and Penny steals the show again!!! I was honestly expecting her portion of volume 8’s story would continue next week but given that this volume’s pacing is not the same as volume 7, which was at least a timeline of a few weeks and this volume is only 2 days, I can understand what the writers are trying to go for to make amity tower go up this soon.

-Penny and Pietro’s parent and child relationship has to be now my current favorite out of the series after this episode!!! The way the writers showcased Pietro’s fears of losing his daughter again and Penny’s need of wanting to do what’s right, despite the dangers she would face really gripped me and I loved every second of it.

- I had strong feeling that Cinder was going to fail again in this current attempt to take the winter maiden powers. The writing was on the wall ever since she disobeyed Salem’s command in episode 4 to remain in the Grimm Whale and now she will definetly face consequences for her actions. The best I can think of right now is that Salem will not allow Cinder to absorb the maiden powers for a time until she has proven herself to Salem. Not only that she will probably make Cinder feel great pain and discomfort through her Grimm arm just for added measure. Do I think these punishments will be enough to teach Cinder a lesson? Nope! In fact I believe this will make her even more desperate to take any magic power where she can find......and lucky for her the original source of the maidens magic is on board the Grimm whale as we speak......oh poor Oscar 😥

-Welp!!! Looks like the fandoms horrible prophecy has just came true......Penny is being Hacked!!! Y’all do know the fandom has some blame for all of this right? If we hadn’t been speculating that she may get hacked last volume, it may have never have happened this volume!!
