In this episode we explore a relatively new subgenre of science fiction called Solarpunk, which aims to imagine better, more ecologically harmonious, futures on earth. In many ways Solarpunk is a reaction to both the real-world climate crisis and to the many apocalyptic visions of collapse filling our screens. Andrew Sage from the YouTube channel Andrewism joins host Jonathan McIntosh and friend of the show Carl Williams for this conversation.

Interesting to see the lineage of solarpunk traced through Castle in the Sky and other Ghibli films; makes sense, and I would love to revisit those films with the theme in mind and see how they achieve the sense of tension I remember; is it coming from an army of evil industrialists bringing life or death stakes, or is it the emotional authenticity of the protagonists, the beauty that stands to be lost, or something else.
In any case I’m glad the concept has a name because it has very real world applications in the work that I do as a designer. Also this YT channel is absolutely fascinating, check it out.

Oh thank god this video exists. I mean EXACTLY!
In ‘The Twilight Saga’ vampires sparkle in the sunlight.
In ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ the sunlight kills vampires.
Buffy is not Twilight and Angel is not Edward even though they’re both creepy stalkers because Buffy absolutely does not put up with Angel’s shit the way Bella does with Edward. Yeah, maybe because she’s the Slayer and Bella is just a regular human being but that’s precisely why unequal power dynamics are not appealing and definitely not romantic in any way.
Both may be young adult or teen drama. But one uses logic and fact and the other just does whatever to make it as marketable as possible to the audience. You can have pretty vampires without contriving it. Angelus literally has the face of an Angel until he vamps out. And his physiology changes to represent the monstrous underpinnings of his vampiric nature. None of that happens in Twilight. We’re just supposed to take it on faith that Edward and his family are good. But there’s nothing good about the way Edward treats Bella. He is extremely abusive and the narrative does not acknowledge it passed “I can smell your blood” which of course is a conflict but not a calling out.

no joke, this guy makes some of the best essays on film and tv theory out there (and with no ads!)... this one's on the conservative politics structurally embedded in superhero narratives and the dangers of watching them uncritically.

OMFG Pop Culture Detective retweeted my video essay on both accounts and followed me!!!
Fangirling so hard!!! Pop Culture Detective’s video essays on masculinity, left wing politics and pop culture are so articulate, important, well edited and engaging. I assume that means he watched my video essay since he doesn’t seem like the kind of person who would retweet and follow me just because I mentioned him in my tweet? I still have so much to improve with my video essays, I’m honoured he wanted to retweet it!!!

The new pop culture detective: "Defenders of the status quo" about marvel was so good 💜
https://youtu.be/LpitmEnaYeU
Not really a new idea I heard similar takes before
it is even a joke in Harley Quinn that if Batman really wanted to reduce crime he should start affordable housing programs 😆
And of course Reed Richards Is Useless is a tvtrope
But he explains it really well and why this trope might be harmful.
