It was a windy autumn morning, not enough to be chilly yet. Luigi was still snug in his bed sleeping with his brother in the other room. He was rudely awakened by a loud banging on the door, he did his best to ignore it and hoped his brother would get it. He was sorely mistaken. He sighed dramatically and dragged himself off his bed, through the house then whipped the door open. His irritation was wiped clean off his face when he saw the Princess of the Mushroom Kingdom.
“Oh! Your grace, to what do we owe the honor of your presence?” He stepped aside to let her in and threw a shoe at his brother’s door while she wasn’t looking.
“I’ve come here to ask for your aid Luigi.” she smiled nervously. Luigi noticed that she came unaccompanied by guards or chaperones.
“Of course Princess, what can I do for you?” He was beginning to become concerned.
“I need you to take my place as ruler of the Mushroom Kingdom. I understand that this is a huge favor to ask of you-” she pleaded, “I beg of you Luigi, I shall explain soon. Please, won’t you do it?” She finished, clasping her hands together.
“Why me? Why not Mario or anyone else?” Luigi was absolutely baffled.
“You’re the only one who could easily pass off as me if you wore my clothes and a wig, you’re around my height and body shape after all-”
Luigi held his hand out and winced, “Alright, I get it, your highness. I’ll do it, I expect to be updated consistently.”
The princess relaxed significantly, “Oh thank you Luigi! I also trust you to run the kingdom as I would more than anyone else. Meet me at my castle in two days, under no circumstance do you tell your brother, he mustn’t know yet.”
“What do you expect me to tell him, your highness? I can’t up and leave without a word.”
The princess stood for a moment, her brow furrowed, it was evident she was trying to make up an excuse. She snapped her fingers and looked back to Luigi, “I’ll send a letter calling you away on important business, perhaps an embassy or something similar. I’ll flesh out the details once I get back to my castle. It will arrive tomorrow to give you enough time to tell your brother and be on your way.” Luigi nodded in both acknowledgment and agreement. “I’ll be going now, Luigi. I shall see you in two days' time.” The princess gave Luigi a half-curtsy before walking out the door.
Luigi shut the door behind her and went to check on Mario. He slowly crept towards the door and opened it to be ajar before peeking inside. Mario was still asleep, seemingly unfazed by the events that had transpired. Luigi couldn’t help but smile and suppress a laugh, Mario truly could sleep through a crusade, or any massive-scale disaster.
Luigi quietly shut the door and made his way to the kitchen to get something to eat while he pretended everything was fine. He had never been more confused and stressed than he is now. He had to do his best not to show it lest his brother suspect.
He nearly jumped out of his skin when he heard Mario behind him, “What are you making?”
Luigi clutched his chest for a moment before wordlessly handing Mario a plate already prepared for him. “What’s got you so worked up today Luigi?”
Luigi froze before replying, “You just scared me, I wasn’t paying attention, that’s all.”
Luigi turned towards him, went around him to go sit down, and eat by himself. Mario looked like he wanted to say something but ultimately decided to take the plate and sit down with him.
The rest of the day was quieter than usual, neither brother having much to say until they had decided to pack it in for the night. They offered one another a ‘goodnight’ and parted ways to their rooms, for Luigi sleep did not come easily. His mind was filled with thoughts of the unknown, he was tossing and turning in vain hopes of silencing his anxiety. Eventually, he managed to sleep but it felt as though he didn’t sleep a wink. His eyes snapped open when he heard some loud knocking on his door.
“Luigi, wake up! There’s a letter here for you. It’s from the Princess!” Mario shouted from behind the door. Luigi felt his stomach drop as he got out of bed and slowly approached the door. He swung the door open and took the letter out of Mario’s hand, pushing past him into the kitchen to read it.
It read:
Luigi’s presence is required in the neighboring Flower Kingdom on my behalf. Further information will be provided upon arrival. Please begin the journey as soon as you receive this. This matter is of the utmost importance and urgency.
Warm regards,
Princess Peach
“What’s it say, Luigi?” Mario asked, now sitting at the table with his brother.
“The princess wants me to go to the Flower Kingdom immediately. She said I would be told why when I get there.”
He stood up and made his way back to his room to begin packing. Mario went to the kitchen to start preparing food for Luigi to take with him on his journey to help Luigi take less time to get everything together for his several-day-long trek. Luigi decided to take a few days worth of clothes to make it seem like he was going on a longer journey than he was going on while also not having too much weight slowing him down. He grabbed his bag and went into his and his brother’s shared living space.
“Hey Luigi, did she say how long you would be gone for?”
Luigi snapped towards his direction not realizing he was there, “Nope, I’m assuming she’ll tell me once I get there. I wonder why she wants me to go.”
Mario nodded in agreement, his brow ever-so-slightly furrowed. “Sit down, I’m getting food ready for you to bring with you and a hot meal before you go.”
Luigi smiled, his tiredness evident, “Thanks, Mario.”

I am definitely not a costume expert, aficionado, or anything whatsoever. Can you explain what you mean by the Star Princess dresses not fitting the actors properly?
Let's do the opposite: What is the hallmark of a good bodice?
To ME... a well-fitting bodice will enhance the wearer's own shape and features. This means that the proportions are right, not too long, not too short, it will cinch the waist in a flattering way, lift the bust, and flair out over the skirt to allow a nice bell shape. The silk should also not wrinkle in an obvious way. Ideally it should also reflect back on Maria Björnson's original design, doing it justice.
A bodice I think ticks all the boxes is one worn by Viktoria Krantz Tocca in Copenhagen 2002:
The length is good for her, with an extra emphasis on the pointed bodice front. Then the curved tabs are shorter at the sides, which allows the skirt to curve out. Note too that the pointed front and curved tabs are identical in colour to the skirt. The pink of the bodice is solely in this area so the lower part visually blends with the skirt.
The waistline is underlined just at her natural waistline, both in the tailoring and colour. The middle area is purple, the darkest of the three colours in the bodice, which adds to a sense of narrow waist. Then rich fringes and gathers over the bust, to exaggerate the hourglass shape of the torso.
Note too that the decorations over the bust curves down in the middle, to balance out the pointed front. Had it been high over the bust, the bodice would have looked too long.
This bodice has extraordinary rich beading, which makes the whole thing lush. But the beading also curve inwards, to further emphasis the narrow waist. All in all, it creates a flattering hourglass shape, while also visually connecting the bodice to the skirt.
Now, when I think a bodice is not well fitted it is because it works against the wearer. Lily Kerhoas' bodice in the West End revival is one example. Why? To me her bodice feels too long for her as it both feature a long pointed front and is quite high over the bust. It also feels too narrow over the hips, so the tabs don't flare out over the skirt. This in turn makes the silk wrinkle both in front and in the waist. The whole bodice ends up looking top-heavy and not giving much room for the skirt (if a good hourglass shape is the point, anyway).
It doesn't mean the bodice itself is not well made, it is just not a good match for the actress, and doesn't give much room for the skirt. At first I was sure it was a hand-me-down bodice, but it turns out it was made for her out-of-house, and likely without the skirt. Making the costume in full, in-house, might have made it easier to fit it up as a cohesive whole? I don't know.
It might be unfair to show a backstage photo when the costumes are made for the stage, for movement, for bold stage light. It can change the look of a costume a LOT. But I don't really think it is too successful on stage either. There are fitting issues in the waist and around the hips, and it still looks too high over the bust. Well, according to my gospel, anyway. But the bodice colours blend very well with the skirt, I'll give them that.
It is also not uncommon for hand-me-down bodices to not fit the new actress great. I am pretty sure Jenna Burns (right) inherited hers from Katie Travis (left). The bodice was newly made for Travis, and hence fits her well. On Burns it looks a bit too too long, especially over the bust, and it wrinkles massively in the waist. I suspect from a re-tailoring. So to me not a great fit on Jenna Burns - but not the fault of either bodice nor actress, just a poor fit as the bodice was made for someone else.
So yeah, a good Star Princess bodice takes the actress' proportions into account, underlines the good features of the actress, and creates optical illusions of an hourglass by the use of colours, beading and tailoring. Unlike most new UK and Restaged Tour bodices a good bodice also adds the little extra in the decorations to reflect on Maria Bjørnson's original design.
Some more examples of masterly made and fitted bodices:
To be fair, basically every single US style bodice, including... Elizabeth Loyacano in Las Vegas:
Kimilee Bryant in the US Tour and on Broadway:
Elizabeth Welch, US Tour:
Zoë Curlett, UK Tour and West End:
Claire Lyon, World Tour revival:
Raquel Paulin, Sao Paulo revival:
Kimilee Bryant, Basel:
(and not a complete list, by any means... just the ones that popped into my head while on the subject)
