In the misty annals of Viking history, tales of conquest and exploration often overshadow the subtler nuances of daily life. Yet, recent archaeological revelations from Sweden's Baltic Sea island of Gotland have illuminated a lesser-known aspect: Viking body modification.
Through the careful examination of skeletal remains, a fascinating tapestry of cultural practices emerges, offering a glimpse into the intricate web of social identities and customs that defined the Norse people during the Viking Age. From elongated skulls to tooth filing, these ancient rituals not only adorned the physical form but also served as markers of status and belonging.

I guess this might be a meta question, but I didn't know who to ask: I keep hearing the collective theory that Lestat wore Louis down between eps 5 and 7 and that's why he is so vacant. But I just can't see that plot? Yeah Lestat is a cheater and a liar and violently beats Louis in ep 5 but none of that reads like "he is wearing Louis down." It reads like Louis decides to stay and go back to this man who is toxic for him for myriad reasons, but he CHOOSES to do it. Am I wrong in feeling fandom erases a lot of Louis' choices and responsibilities just because he's quieter about them than Lestat? I feel Louis is mentally unwell and no amount of Lestat/love could "cure" him? But I never hear that reading in fan spaces--am I missing something?
I don't think Louis is passive at all - Louis… likes to punish with silence.
That’s canon, it’s in the books. And in the show. He reads, he ignores, he stays away.
He even admits that to Lestat, in the books:
"I don’t know why I tormented you, made you pay for asking, made you come all this way.“ (Prince Lestat and the Realm of Atlantis).
Louis… knows Lestat. He knows what buttons to push, and which not to push. He even says something this effect to Claudia on the lake. Let’s be real here, 20 years is a long time to be with someone. 70 in the books even more. You KNOW your partner. Louis may not know all the reasons for Lestat’s behavior, but he does know the buttons.
For example, when he throws that line at Lestat, of him always being alone, that is a deliberate thing. He knows it’ll wound. And with that same knowledge he returns, with Claudia, and he knows what buttons to push. The episode 2 comment "you’re gonna make me beg?“ comes to mind here as well, with the way Louis does the doe-eyed pretty-please begging. Lestat has said it out loud before - he’d do anything for Louis. And Louis knows that.
So yeah, I know what you mean.
Louis is reduced… by Claudia and often in perception, to the passive housewife.
But Louis is also - exactly in the timeframe between the assault and the end - coming to the realization what being a vampire really means.
Before, it’s been dabbling in human affairs, being successful with mountains of money. Opera, clothes, servants… showing off.
Claudia returns to get Louis at the moment when his sister leaves him - telling him she’ll take that place now. It’s the last tie severed.
His sister is now a vampire, too (in a way).
What follows is almost crippling depression, with lots of ups and downs. Oh, don’t get me wrong here, the DV and assault by Lestat definitely play into it, but…
Louis notes Lestat’s tries to reconcile. I’m pretty sure he knows which buttons he pushed. I’m pretty sure he rekindled the fight upstairs, too, especially after Lestat’s "Cheri let’s not fight like this anymore, I’m trying to restrain myself.“
In a way, Louis wanted this fight to happen, imho.
Because he’s not only fighting against his lover there. He’s fighting against his maker, and a vampire. He’s fighting the realization that this is what their life is. His life. This is it. There is no turning back now, no possibility to return. It’s a wild rebellion against his own status, his own situation.
The rite of passage.
I think he had just… somewhat underestimated what exactly he could unleash with it. And just how badly the power discrepancy actually is. But then he never had a reference before.
And then… after episode 5…. They throw Lestat, their maker, out of his own house, his own coven. And Lestat lets them. They could have moved away, but didn’t. They stayed right there, in Rue Royale, in (legally) Lestat’s house. A choice. Deliberate.
Here we are, come and try to win me back.
As said before, Louis keeps track. He may burn a lot of the gifts, but I’m pretty sure not all. If Claudia isn’t looking. And though Lestat employs a common tactic to shift blame (of course he does) when he gets the Rolls Royce, Louis also makes it very clear through his body language and silence (once more) that he does not want to sever this… cord.
He doesn’t give Lestat closure, just silence. Again.
Knowing full well how Lestat would react.
By that time he’s known the man for roughly 25 years.
Yes, Louis is worn down eventually.
But it’s not only what happened between them, but also what is happening around him. Louis says that to Claudia too, on that bench, that he can see himself become like Lestat, given the time.
It’s realization. The damned rite of passage, of leaving humanity as he knew it behind.
And he’s not ready to. And it tears him apart from the inside.
And yes, no amount of love could cure him at that point. Because it is his choices that got him here.
He was given a choice, and he is unable to accept that fact.
Which is precisely why Lestat cannot let Claudia go.
Because Lestat knows the pain of the rite of passage. Has been through it. Has gone to earth because of it.
He knows.
Louis goes back to Lestat in those episodes because a part of him knows that his depression isn’t really about Lestat.
It’s about what he is.
And, imho, it will only be much later, after Merrick, when Lestat has taken that choice from him, that he can let go.
Find peace with himself and his choice.

Jokingly controversial opinion but as someone who works in a movie store (tho we sell 99% more than we rent) I guarantee the only reason Steve would make a "no rated R movies" rule for the party (both at scoops and at family video) is if the specific movie was like particularly nasty or if he got in trouble with the kids parents lol.
Like i said, we sell more than we rent, so it wouldn't be tied to an account like it would for Steve at family video, but i swear the only time any of us consistently card teenagers is if it's 1) horny anime/Manga, 2) grand theft auto v (which has a whole strip club plotline that's pretty explicit) 3) the kid is rude to us. We're supposed to card WAYYY more but honestly some kid buying fucking call of duty black ops or some shitty horror movie doesn't make a difference when you're working minimum wage and probably consumed way worse at their age.
And if it was the Party? Where Steve probably would just rent stuff under his or robins account for the age verification? I really don't think he would be that strict as long as they 1) don't tell their parents 2) return it on time (and rewound you ungrateful shits) and 3) it wasn't like, fucking Caligula or something. The kids canonically watch evil dead and the thing like wowebedldjddk these are not kids with weak stomachs i don't think he's going to give them some arbitrary rule about "no rated r movies" that they won't listen to.
(esp considering pg-13 wasn't a widely used rating yet)
Anyway this is a light hearted pet peeve, it's just one of those things that fanon loves to make Steve strict about but honestly doesn't make a whole lot of sense.

For the fanfic writer ask: 🥺
🥺 Is there a certain type of moment or common interaction between your characters that never fails to put you in your feels?
I'm glad you picked this because it helped me articulate something I hadn't consciously realized. Watching Stargate and reading/writing fanfiction has been a great writer's workshop for me for emotional scenes, not just for Stargate or fanfiction.
Often there's an emotionally charged tension between people when they are trying to be strong, don't know what to say, are afraid to break down, etc. It happens a lot between Sam and Jack, but it's not always sexual tension. Sometimes it's a feeling of "This is hard and I don't know how to feel or what you will think but I want to trust you or show you I care."
We often can't articulate those feelings while emotional, so we say something more subtle or we don't say anything at all. Maybe it's a look. Maybe it's tears. Maybe it's a joke. Maybe it's anger. And sometimes the tension breaks because a character reaches out to offer a word or embrace. And sometimes that doesn't happen and someone goes unnoticed. It happens between all of the other characters, as well.
For example, when Teal'c resigns to Hammond to go save SG1, tears streaming down his stoic face. When Daniel goes through withdrawal in Need and Jack finds and embraces him. When Sam is barely holding it together in Paradise Lost and hides in the locker room until Teal'c finds her. How Hammond barely holds back tears watching the documentary. How Janet exhaustedly tries to cure Cassie and Daniel reaches for her and offers help. When everyone is trying to tell Jack how they feel in The Lost City. Whenever one of them is missing or presumed dead. So, I really get in those feels when I write my characters reaching that point of having had to be strong for too long. Because I have been there and know what that feels like. We all do. And I try to write it authentically.
Thank you for asking!

Coming of Age Day by Visit MY Japan
Happens on the second Monday of January, to celebrate youths turning the age of 20 years old. During this day, you’ll see young women dressed in furisode (kimono with long dangling sleeves) and men in hakama (traditional trousers).
In the morning, they are welcomed via ceremony at their respective city halls. The day continues at a local shrine where they pray for success and good health. Many cap the celebration by having a drink–legally!
An interesting trivia is that in the old days of Samurai, children were born with child names before they were given adult names when they became adults. When you read history, you notice every Samurai had different names.
For example, Minamoto no Yoshitsune childhood name is Ushiwakamaru. He went through a “Rite of Passage” when he’s older, to change his name where it marks a person’s transition from phase of life to another.
So the concept is similar. While in the world today, their given names are the same from childhood into adulthood but the celebration to recognise their transition into a different phase of life remains.
