Encanto Switcheroo AU

Or just an age swap AU. And also role swap.

An anon asked for the former and I got a little carried away. It’s now a full AU.

Pepa (50) is the eldest of Alma and Pedro’s triplets. Passionate and admittedly bossy, she has been leading the way for her siblings since they were born. The de-facto leader of the Madrigals in her mother’s absence.

Bruno (50)… yeah, we don’t talk about him.

Julieta (50) is the final piece of the Madrigal triplets. Though she is usually outshone by her older siblings, that is not to discredit the town’s appreciation of her. Certainly, her husband, Agustín, would be very lost without her.

Camilo (21) is the eldest of Pepa and Félix’s children. He is a charming and sociable young man, though theatrical and mischievous, he finds himself overlooked in terms of usefulness and perfection.

Antonio (19) is the younger of the two boys. He isn’t particularly close with most of the townspeople, he is a shy boy and much prefers the company of his siblings. But he is always willing to lend a hand to anyone who needs him.

Dolores (15) is the youngest and only daughter of Pepa and Félix. The only Madrigal to not receive a gift on her fifth birthday, she has remained a figure of mystery ever since.

Mirabel (21) is the eldest of Agustín and Julieta’s daughters. This perfect young lady is considered to be very much her mother’s miniature. She is soon to become the most ideal bride to Natalio Alfaro; a very lucky man, indeed.

Isabela (15) is the typical problematic middle child, however, has seemingly won over her Abuela’s favour and somehow escapes all of the trouble she causes. It is not unsurprising to see her with leaves in her hair and dirt on her dress

Luisa (4) is the youngest and the current holder of the baby privilege card in La Casa Madrigal. An excitable and friendly girl, though a little nervous for her upcoming birthday.

Seasons: A date in spring time, holding hands and sharing a cup of tea in fall, a snowball fight in winter, or a pool party in summer, let’s see something seasonal!

A New Relationship: A first date, a first kiss, when they’re in the honeymoon phase, a first meeting where someone is struck by cupid’s bow. An early look at two people together, and the start of their love.

Colors: Maybe it’s a monochrome piece, or black and white with a single color. Maybe it’s about how the color of her eyes or her hair are so beautiful, or how the world seems brighter and more beautiful that they’ve met. Maybe it’s about how the memory of her colors day to day tasks, even now. Literal or metaphorical, let’s see some color.

Music: Two characters singing or playing instruments. A band AU, or a songfic. A first dance, or a playlist, or using a Disney song for a new ship, use music to inspire and shape a piece!

Fancharacters (OC’s): Whether it’s an OC who you ship with a character, or an fancharacter family for your ship, let’s see an a work that incorporates an OC.

AU: Now, practically all Disney femslash ships are AUs, but let’s see something more than X meets Y. Are they assassins? Superheroes? Is this an AU where people have wings, or are taking the roles in your favorite romcom?

Style Swap: Wearing each other’s threads, or swapped into a different style entirely. Maybe we’ll see Jane Porter in the captain’s uniform and Amelia the dress, or Tiana and Charlotte in avantgarde fashion. Maybe swap your ships into an art style, like art deco, or early rubber hose animation.

Adventure: Sometimes you fall in love right at home, at a dance, or in the neighborhood, but not this time. The clock is ticking, the sails are set and we have no time to rest. High seas, high stakes, your ship meets on or undertakes an adventure together.

Gifts: A birthday gift, an anniversary gift, or a just because gift? Tiana is a gifted cook making something, Ariel is a gifted singer, Merida is a gifted archer. The Madrigals have their gifts, and use them to impress someone.

Angst: Is it unrequited love, a tragic end, or a bittersweet goodbye? Maybe it’s starcrossed love never to be, or true love cut short by fate, but no matter what there is at least a tinge of sadness at the end.

Happily Ever After: They finally get together, triumph, or spit out how they feel. Do they defeat the dragon, the sorcerer, they move in together, run a business, adopt a dog, or grow old? What’s the happily ever after?

Free Day: Go nuts, go wild.

in the spirit of the season (mutuals posting about their encanto aus) i wanted to post about mine bc i love them and am not active enough on here and wanna change that bc sharing my stuff is fun! so without further ado here they are lol

next gen au

pretty self explanatory. the story outlines what all the madrigals (mostly the grandkids) are up to in the years following the movie. mirabel gradually takes on more of a leadership role as time passes and eventually becomes the matriarch after alma's death and with enough time to prepare for the role. under her leadership, the madrigals are less shoehorned into roles and are encouraged to express themselves more freely, but being the leader still isn't easy and things still aren't perfect - while alma is still alive, mirabel often finds herself going to her for advice and repairing their bond further in the process. she also gets a gf (lorena), i've been playing around with the idea of her being an outsider that finds her way into the encanto but i would have to flesh that plot out a little more before i make it official. dolores eventually marries mariano, but only on her terms - she realizes quickly after the movie that though she loves mariano, she wants to take things slow, and mariano is more than happy to respect that. he puts in a lot of effort to understand how her gift works and help her out with it whenever he can, and for once, she feels like the one being heard. isabela, now free of her old role as the golden child, begins to let her more adventurous side out, exploring the outskirts and forests of the encanto to observe the plant life. she hones her gift and is able to bring even more exotic plant species to the encanto and starts up a very successful garden. she also ends up marrying two village women - lilli and rosa - and the three of them adopt a daughter, jacinda, together and spoil her rotten. lilli runs a flower shop and isa helps her out immensely with this. luisa finally learns to take it easy, prioritizing rest and relaxation after so many years of working hard to serve the community - though she definitely still loves to lift and hang out with the donkeys in her spare time bc old habits die hard. she probably takes over the care and raising of the donkeys as a whole bc they love her. she marries a village woman, inés, and they adopt two daughters, valentina and ciela. camilo is actually the first grandkid to settle down - he marries his childhood best friend and love of his life marco, and the two of them have six children together - amelia, imelda, brunito, ignacio, felipe, and sofia. they have their hands quite full with fatherhood but on top of that marco works as a teacher at the encanto's school while camilo continues to volunteer in the community, eventually becoming the drama director and soccer coach for the school. antonio grows up and starts his own animal sanctuary in the encanto that becomes wildly successful. he enlists dolores' help to scope out any injured or sick animals in the forests and nurses them back to health at the sanctuary, and he often accompanies isa on her trips to the forest to keep taxonomy records of the encanto's diverse wildlife. he never had much of an interest in romance - though plenty of people swoon over his kindness to the animals - but he is very fulfilled nonetheless and couldn't be happier helping take care of his animal friends. i have a more detailed timeline and bios for the kids that i'll be posting eventually but this is the main rundown of where the grandkids are at years down the line!

swap

essentially follows the plot of the movie but the sides of the family swap roles. instead of alma, pedro is the head of the family. pepa has the gift of healing food and felix is her clumsy husband, camilo is the golden child with the wonderful floral gift, dolores is the middle child with the gift of super strength, and antonio is the baby of his side of the family, cursed to a giftless existence (and being the main character of the storyline). on the other side of the family, julieta's emotions control the weather while agustin keeps her calm, luisa is the eldest with the ability to hear a pin drop from miles away, isabela is the mischievous shapeshifting middle child, and mirabel is the youngest member of the family and gains the ability to speak with animals. bruno is still bruno. did i make this au entirely to put camilo in pretty pink outfits and make him a mean annoying gay? maybe.

pirates

the warm color family is a fearsome and renowned pirate crew descended from the notorious husband-wife pirate duo alma and pedro madrigal (the latter is dead and the former has long since retired), with pepa as the captain and felix as the first mate. pepa was estranged from her mother and siblings in her youth as she attempted to learn more about her parents' past, and she soon set out on her own to live the pirate life that alma tried so hard to keep her children out of. in the meantime, julieta and her family form their own rival crew and set sail in search of pepa to take their vengeance. bruno tries his best to be a good mama's boy and stay home, but he is soon taken hostage by the fearless captain hernando, a legendary pirate who has feuded with both madrigal sisters and their crews for a while now. he grows rather fond of his bargaining chip over time and bruno eventually becomes the captain's lover and first mate. when the sisters finally put aside their squabbles and unite to save their brother from their enemy's clutches, it's a very awkward family reunion. also everyone has their gifts and uses them to help their crew in one way or another. eventually when the two sides of the family unite, the grandkids take up a ship of their own with mirabel as the new captain.

roommates

marco and camilo are college roommates with luca and alberto. that's literally it no linear plot just vibes. luca is a first year astronomy student, alberto is a second year student and undeclared, marco and camilo are third years and marco is majoring in education while being on the soccer team and camilo is majoring in theatre (🤢). alberto and camilo despise each other but also camilo is lowkey crushing. camilo and marco are already dating and alberto and luca are also definitely together but heavily in denial about it. they fight over dishes being left in the sink and decorate their dorm all cute

the fall

wrote a ten chapter fic about this one so read that if you wanna know what it entails but tl;dr au where the family never recovers after the fall of casita and they go their separate ways, with dolores camilo and isa fully moving out, their whereabouts unknown - until, ten years later, mirabel takes it upon herself to track them down, reunite the family once and for all, and save the miracle for real this time. will she succeed? what have the runaways all been up to over these past ten years? read it and find out i'm not telling you! also this fic/au is quite old compared to the others so no marco 😔 fly high king

mamma mia

the silliest dumbest most self indulgent au ever. camilo centric of course. the storyline is literally just mamma mia but with camilo. he has twin daughters and one of them (ima) is getting married and wants to invite her other biological father to the wedding - the only problem is she doesn't know who that is, and if camilo's old diary describing all his old hookups in detail is to be believed, there's three possibilities - marco osma, dante velazquez, and nicolas sorelli (the latter two are ocs, i'll probably post their bios at some point lol also nicolas is trans so he's definitely not the other dad but he's stealth so he's just going along for the ride). she invites all three of them to her wedding and they reunite with camilo for the first time in twenty years. drama ensues. camilo marries marco at the end regardless of if he's the dad or not (but he probably is - they never find out for sure). isa is tanya (so lilli is pepper ofc) and mirabel is rosie (except she doesn't end up with one of the dads at the end bc she actually respects herself). ima's fiancées identity is yet to be determined bc i don't have a partner oc for her but i do know she's a lesbian so. gay greek weddings! camilo in overalls! love wins!

runaway camilo

this one is a rewrite of the canon plot to a degree but not really enough to be considered a full on au. plays with the scrapped concept of camilo looking completely different after the fall of casita that didn't make it into the final movie, which is like one of my favorite concepts ever especially because of how easily it plays into trans camilo. in this rewrite, camilo has basically used his gift to masculinize himself perpetually since his ceremony, which all but cures his dysphoria - that is, until casita falls, he loses the gift he had become dependent on, and it all blows up in his face. he's unrecognizable when the dust clears, and rather than be seen in such a state, he flees the scene and goes missing just around the same time as mirabel. the family is split as pepa and felix go looking for their son while the cool color family goes looking for mirabel, and both are found within a few days - camilo in the depths of the forest, skin scraped and clothes ragged from running into the forest with reckless abandon, practically digging his own grave and ready to give up for good. when he's found, it takes a LONG time for him to allow anyone to see him, much less recover from the trauma. the rewrite basically involves these events and the aftermath. luckily camilo does get his gift back when casita is rebuilt but the scars are forever and he probably still has nightmares about losing his gift well into adulthood and has to learn to become comfortable going without his gift for short bouts of time in order to get more comfortable lest the worst case scenario happens again! more or less a transmilo angst fest add-on to the main plot of the movie. mimi needs a hug 💔

Hey, I love your replaced miracle au, what's the story? I wanna know why Mirabel left and how Pepa became the matriarch, as you'd think Julieta would be the new matriarch if something happened to Alma, are anyone else's roles or powers switched?

Oh I didn't know I got messages, sorry for the delay! 💦

First of all i appreciate a lot that you love this au! 🥺 And as for the story, it will be told with new posts regularly; Mirabel left to protect Antonio because she had a vision about casita breaking down and he was in the center of it, so in his ceremony she left to prevent Antonio from being shunned in the same way she was. (technically the roles have been swapped).

It is known that Julieta was the eldest and the one who should be in charge after Alma's death, but she ceded that position to her daughter Pepa because she saw her as more suitable to be the new authority, since unlike Julieta, who is a passive person and goes more for the emotional side, Pepa is rational, makes tough but fair decisions, and will follow the same steps as her mother regarding taking charge of the family, which means that the destiny of the Madrigals will remain on the same tragic path, and the miracle will die if they don´t fix the main problem before it's too late.

I think the fact that it is now Antonio who has to fix his relationship with his mother will make it more complicated and painful to watch because of the new terrain that will be explored too. (For example, the death of his father Felix)

And yep, all their roles/gifts will be switched, including 2 new characters :) Thank you for asking!

Pirate au character focus: Dolores Madrigal

- I've already touched on how her gift (singing/siren's voice/persuasion) affects her love life. She's very much 'the weird kid', because of her gift- being able to magically direct others to do what you want isn't great for friendships (or love interests). There's always been a lot of rumors around her intentions, even among the crew (although this is done very, very, very quietly, out of fear of her ma).

- Her gift is dangerous, but temperamental. If she gets the wording wrong, or accidently catches the wrong person when she sings, it can cause a lot of trouble. She used to go off to a deserted island to practice her singing. (She has accidentally wiped her tía's memory once, and on another occasion, she'd managed to end up captured, but used to powers to sink the ship that had caught her. Except she forgot to get herself released first. The others had to find her and get her out.)

- she loves singing. And dancing, but because of her gift she has to make sure she doesn't sing accidentally, so doesn't sing except to use her gift. She still dances though, now and then, but she wishes she could freely do both.

- Can breathe underwater (mermaid ancestry). She struggles to sing underwater, but it seems doable at short range. It quickly gets distorted though, so she wouldn't be able to sing into a ship.

- She's not as intuitive or invested in the shipwork, or leading aspect as the others, generally staying out of the way when the fighting hits, preferring to let others do the bulk of the work. (Not to say she doesn't do anything- her gift is just too dangerous bc of its area effect. When it comes to defending, she's one of the few Madrigals that doesn't use a sword, although she has used a spear sometimes). But Pepa has always considered Dolores as her eventual replacement, so has always put extra effort into making sure it was Dolores who she taught about everything, Dolores, who she took with her to meet their allies and see how all the captaincy stuff worked. Dolores, not wanting to disappoint her ma, went along with all of it, knowing she had a role to fulfil. If Alma and Pepa have swapped roles in this au, then to a certain extent, so have Isabela and Dolores. Dolores is just glad her ma hasn't pushed her towards an arranged marriage yet.

- Dolores doesn't know about Isabela's wish to lead, but does see her efforts to impress Pepa. She thinks they all just have to be like that (not realising that she herself is doing a lot less than the others, with better results)

- Dolores has a crush on Mariano but can't date him because Pepa disapproves, and also Dolores can't date him without people suspecting she's just using her powers to get him to love her.

- Dolores can come across as a bit harsh sometimes. When you can persuade someone to forget what you just said, you don't need to be as guarded around what you say. She's more prone to spouting harsh truths than most people (but she means well underneath it all).

- She got her own cabin at the front of the ship when she got her gift. Her magical focus became a room- a performance space of sorts. She's one of the few Madrigals associated with a specific room on the Casita.

- As the Captain's daughter she's received preferential treatment throughout her life, and it shows. Also, as the eldest, she gets a comparatively large amount of free reign/free time to do her own thing. She's a lot less likely to get told off for doing something she shouldn't, and takes advantage of that to pursue her own interests (usually away from the ship).

But back to your ask! I actually really love that idea! I'm sure SatoSugu (stand in name for the moment probably) love to learn more about humans and curses, and how they work and react to different effects and trauma!

And Shoko would be the best person to do that with their reverse curse technique! Keeping humans alive when the experiment is going so that SatoSugu can watch and see what happens (and sure! They/Them Shoko for this AU! I might accidentally use it/its for them out of habit for the first few times but will try to catch myself!)

Was thinking of swapping Uraume into Shoko's role because I saw that they also have reverse curse technique, but in canon they probably can't use it on others like Shoko.

Ooooh! What if Uraume was able to imbue curse energy into food that helps heal people? Like Julieta Madrigal from Encanto or senzu beans from Dragon Ball! (It would also be the only food that Inaho would be able to eat slowly, as all other food he has to eat in like 1-2 bites otherwise it loses most of it's nutritional properties because of his curse technique, meaning he has to eat a LOT just to have enough food to feel full).

But yea! I like that idea a lot! I'm trying to keep people with their curse techniques, so Uraume will also still have the ice powers, so that means we can possibly just make up a curse technique for Shoko since they don't have one in canon (yet. I think I saw some theories that Shoko could be getting some soon in newer chapters? but I am not even close to being there in the story so don't take my word on that at all!)

Or possibly Shoko's reverse curse technique is enough for them. Though I kinda want them to have like... a technique that allows them to see souls similar to canon Mahito, which would make healing easier. They can't manipulate souls at all, so they can't change people, but they can see what a soul is supposed to look like and speed up the healing process, both on humans with RCT and in curse with regular CT, but can also sabotage souls as well? idk, will think about it and try to come to a decision.

Ok, so, what if all the madrigal kids were put on the "golden child" pedestal? Even Mirabel (she can have a gift or no gift, it's your choice).

Isabela = The perfect girl who can create flowers. She's agile, sweet, and beautiful. If you had a bad day she can give you a few flowers to make you feel better. She can also help with birthdays, funerals, weddings, etc.

Dolores = The girl who can hear if anyone is in trouble or just someone to spill the tea with. She can also help if any person or child is going through abuse of some kind.

Luisa = Has the strength to protect anyone in the family and just help around with heavy things. She's also just as agile and almost never smudges her clothes when she's out doing chores.

Mirabel = ?

Camilo = the perfect gentleman and sweetheart of the family. Always willing to help mothers or parents have a break. Or just willing to make you laugh or smile.

Antonio = The second sweetest boy of the family. Always willing to give a hug or help around. Especially with his new gift, he can easily speak to the animals of Encanto for anything the villagers need. (And to tell the bee's Agustin isn't a threat)

(I'm already writing an au like this, but I just wanted to see what your version of the au would be like. In my version Mirabel got the gift of creating diamonds (jewelry), crystals, and pearls. You can choose if she gets a gift or not tho)

To be honest, I wouldn’t want to do an AU too similar to that of someone else’s, if that makes sense? It isn’t that I dislike the idea though.

Anyway, here are my thoughts on this:

Having all of them be the “golden child” at once kind of renders the trope pointless. If they are all perfect, they are all equal; so there wouldn’t really be a pedestal or favouritism. In addition, having so much may also make it quite messy.

But it is a very intriguing idea to play around with what each child would be like in the role.

Isabela is already the favourite in canon. I don’t have anything to add here.

Dolores is definitely an interesting case. Her gift is one of the ones usually regarded as a curse or associated with negative connotations. Which it isn’t, it is arguably one of the more helpful gifts. Combined with her passion and intelligence, she would make a very capable golden child and definitely achieve that ideal of a perfect, young lady that we see Abuela going for with Isabela in canon.

Luisa is one of the more likely to be a golden child for me. If Abuela valued more hard work than reputation, as Luisa could easily be argued as the one who does the most to benefit the community alongside her mother. At the same time, she is also this figure of bravery and protection, which easily adds to the possible idolisation of her character to the town.

Camilo is similar to Luisa. Given his optimistic spirit and the desire to bring smiles or laughter to all, he is definitely one of the more friendly and social members of the family - it is easy to imagine him being the favourite of the town because of how his work brings him so close to their lives. He’d fall into a similar trap to Isabela, hiding his more mischievous and chaotic nature, in favour of a more gentlemen persona to please Abuela.

Mirabel is not usually handled well in AUs where she’s swapped to be the favourite. She gets wildly out of character and just becomes another Señorita Perfecta Isabela or idolised for being more vulnerable (which… why? You’d have to have the same feelings to the entire town). Mirabel is the brains of her sisters (Luisa = brawn, Isabela = beauty). There is so much potential behind a mind or logic based gift and the subsequent pressures Mirabel might face as “the most intelligent girl in town”. And I will never get why nobody takes advantage of it.

Antonio is another one to see being an easy charmer. The youngest favouritism is rather common and how could you say anything bad about a sweet, little boy who can talk to animals? I haven’t seen anyone experiment with him as the favourite before, so it would be very exciting to see what someone comes up with.
