One of the things I like to do a lot is analyse costume’s choice in television. And one thing I’ve noticed is how when Rory is introduced to the rich world, her outfits go to darker colors, especially gray and black, and also more skirts and less jeans.

That extreme outfit change that happens in season 6, really shows that Rory is being more influenced by Emily and the life she lives, giving into the rich world that her mother had tried so hard to keep her away. Like in the episode, “Let’s do some magic.”, when Rory’s given the position to plan the event, she’s wearing a white button shirt and black skirt, which is such an Emily look. I think the one we can see it best is at their fight scene, in which they are basically wearing the same coat.

See? Button closed coat, it’s almost the same fabric and in similar patterns. It’s such a not Rory look and I just can’t see normal Rory liking this. It looks like she’s trying to seem more adult than she actually is, to give her a sense of maturity, but it’s just unnatural, because she’s actually hasn’t reached that place mentally or emotionally. Her life is a mess, but she’s trying to look together and in control. It has a huge contrast to the clothing she wears when she was younger. Her outfits were 90% of the time: jeans and a confortable shirt and a delicate top. Then, when she was dating Jess, it started leaving the sweet child’s baby pink clothing to other shades and purple coats.

Jess was Rory entering to a more mature relationship, not an adult one, but more mature than what she had with Dean. It’s her leaving puppy love, pecks on the cheek to something more tender, which includes her beginning desire to have sex. One of my favorite outfits of hers is the one she uses at Kyle’s party. The delicate light purple shirt with a lace, jeans, black belt and lovely dark purple coat, is just, chef’s kiss.

What I wanted to point out is that Rory’s clothing really reflects on how she’s feeling and who she is in that moment. Season 5 and 6 Rory’s outfits just look different than what she normally wears and shows how she’s slowly distancing from her true self. When she goes back to Yale, we see her become closer to normal, back to sweats and jeans, but now she has lived more and the experiences she had, influenced her, and now she wears finer coats and accessories. Her outfits bring the both worlds she lived, her mother’s and grandmother’s, plus the one she created to herself without their influence, creating now her unique self.
