Ever wondered why the Elucien arguments pulling out Sarah’s 2016 interview and Facebook comment (yeah that one after ACOMAF came out) are SO annoying? 🙄
Ok so I ended up in a TikTok comment section today (yes I know that was my first mistake) and it occurred to me, we are once again not on the same page about some fundamental ideas on writing. The OP argued Sarah hasn’t changed her mind on the next books &elucien and that she said so in an interview after ACOSF.
Ok, but there’s a huge GLARING problem with that.
Basically, a writer makes promises in the text. I’m paraphrasing Sanderson here (I watch his lectures for fun, even tho I don’t write cuz I’m a dork) so he was talking about the first chapter and prologue of a book, or movie… but if you’re writing a multi-book epic, then you’re probably going to make promises about plots and characters of your future books, right?
So what are these promises? Basically what kind of book it is, plot&trope hints, the tone, goals, journeys and obstacles.
Ok back to SJM: why is the argument that “she said Elucien and hasn’t changed her mind infuriating? Because she made different promises in the books. And that is what Elriels mean when we say “set up”.
I mean just from the amount of interactions, Elriel have more than Elucien.. not to mention the warmth, positivity and thoughtfulness she put into their interactions over seriously 4 books. The promises are crystal clear: there is a romance that started as friendship==plot, but she has a bond w/someone else==obstacle, and Rhys forbade it in a moment resulting in her thinking he rejected her, but he didn’t == twist.
These promises need to be addressed, resolved, fulfilled. Is there something even CLOSE to this kind of story promise existing for Elucien?
I have seriously seen people claim that Elucien are both “friends to lovers” AND “enemies to lovers”…. These cannot both be true, like come on… you’re not even sure what kind of story they promise to be? You’re not sure what kinds of promises Sarah made about Elucien?
Why are you not sure? Because it’s not in the text. My personal view is that Elucien is neither… if they happen it’s kind of worse than either trope, they’re certainly not friends, they are at best indifferent to each other and at worst resentful. Mmmm … delicious “indifferent to lovers” 🫠
On a serious note, I don’t “hate” Elucien, but SJM hasn’t made a single promise in the text that I can quote in here that would make me excited about them. He gave her gifts that she didn’t throw away…. ?? Really?… she made a half step toward him… once… no, just no! And that’s how I feel, regardless if “Lulu deserves love”… sure he does, then write a love interest that brings out flirty firey fox boy from book1 and I’m on board 🫡 ….and don’t try to convince me after 4 books of a tepid nothing that all along it was Elain. Because. I. Don’t. Buy. It.
And my last point (I swear!) why did I get my panties all up in a twist… basically this: a writer makes promises IN THE TEXT, and if what you are saying in interviews directly CONTRADICTS your actual text, then you kinda have a problem. … at that point either you’re a bad writer, or you can’t blindly trust an interview from 7 years ago, it’s outdated!
The great GRRM himself said how often his “gardening style” of writing led to character arcs and romantic pairings changing… so why don’t we start treating Sarah as an adult author, and trust the text, and not an old interview?
It also comes down to trust. You don’t wanna be left feeling like “hmmm this doesn’t feel real, I don’t buy it” it takes you out of the text, and it happens when an author messes up promise-delivery . When an author foreshadows well, and sets up the story with their promises, still manages to surprise us while keeping the promises… well I trust THAT PERSON to tell me the most satisfying story.

the fucking way his character develops from licky man to best dad material is my favorite thing
his outfit is so so so good i would die to wear it
in general this man is one of my fave jojos characters and i get a lot of comfort from him
hes just really neat and has a good taste in music
he did his fucking best and i will always love him for that
imo the way that his death was drawn out was genuinely one of the most heartbreaking deaths in the entire series and fucks me up each time i think of it
i feel like he really is the one to hold the team together in a way that everyone feels cared for and saved

the jokes towards trish are really really uncomfy and how fugo doesnt wanna be involved but he is pushing him to do something that makes him uncomfortable did not make me like him a lot
hes goofy but not goofy enough for me to be ok with the repeated jokes about that esp in the body swap episode (ik it was supposed to be funny but it just felt off)
his vibes r good but i wish we got to see his hair
the fandom interpretation is normally pretty good of him overall?
despite not loving him a lot, i really enjoying writing for him (one day might open up headcanon requests or smth but unsure)
hes someone id wanna watch movies w but his taste in movies and mine r very different

honestly has very very good comedic potential

AHHHH YES OF COURSE OF COURSE ok so like. as a kid i think he was sort of. asocial and weird, he had long hair he didn't brush well and wore ratty zip up hoodies and t shirts and jeans, and he sort of. longed to be more tomboyish than he was but john had expectations for what his daughter would be like. i don't think he expected a girly girl or anything but shit like cutting his hair shorter than shoulder length and wearing cargo shorts was off the table. around middle school he started like. figuring out who to talk to at new schools, generally quiet boys who got picked on because girls were often mean or had already figured out where they fit into the social order. he played dnd sometimes, shit like that. i think he had a lesbian teacher at some point that encouraged him to come out of his shell a bit more and i think thats around when he chopped off all his hair in a motel bathroom by himself. in late high school he thought he was a lesbian, and he started dating girls, hooking up, shit like that. he wore 2 sports bras most days and lots of layers, hiding his chest and he was really abnormally tall and for a while it suited him. he was mostly happy as a baby butch, and the high of passing every once in a while was weird but far from unpleasant... but there was an underlying. tug towards not just masculinity but manhood that he couldn't articulate or figure out what to do with. he and john fought a lot, john sometimes used his masculinity or sexuality as an insult, shit like that. i think when he got to stanford he had the like. space to breathe and read gender theory and join a gsa or some shit and like. i think thats around when he first heard about being trans masc. i think it took like. 6 months between finding out about trans men's existence and realizing he was one, and he started t quickly after. and top surgery about a year after that. i think for a while he like. stopped dating anf eventually stopped like. even hooking up w ppl, because when yr pre t its rlly hard to feel like anyone takes your gender seriously, ESPECIALLY in fuckin! 2001-2005! and that shit sucks so bad. anyways after starting t and especially after top surgery he felt Way more at home in his body but also way more. free to interact with people. you dont realize how long youve been holding your breath til you start to let it go. he and dean had some weird weeks after dean came to get him. its weird to say goodbye to your weird little sister and then come to get her 4 years later and meet a man taller than you thats still definitely the kid you grew up with. dean doesn't like. get it exactly, but he's not a dick. he loves sam no matter what. he says the wrong thing sometimes, but he gets used to thinking of sam as a man quickly and after sam calls him on his fuckin. shitty jokes he drops them all together. one of these days i will make actual progress on my transhet sam fic. one day. also i think jess is bi and that makes him feel more comfortable than like. if she was a lesbian (obviously) or a straight woman (scary) and she was the first person he dated after he started dating again and even tho that like. could spell disaster it was a good relationship that they both found fulfilling <3

This couldn’t be happening. A killing game?! Who could you even trust?! Before Monokuma had announced himself as well as the killing game, you had gotten to know the people there with you on the island, but now.... you really didn’t know who to trust.
You sat alone in your cabin, door and windows locked. You’d rather stay in there for all eternity than risk getting killed. You screamed, you couldn’t help it, when you heard a knock on your door. Someone was trying to kill you!
Well... if they were... you doubted they would knock. They probably would just break the door down...
Unless they were trying to lure you into a false sense of security!
“W-Who is it?” You whimpered barely loud enough for them to hear.
“It’s Nagito.” Ah, Nagito. The one person you still sorta trusted. He was.... weird, yes. But he also made it clear when Monokuma announced the game that he’d gladly die for hope...
But he never said he’d kill.
You slowly got up and opened the door just a crack, peeking through and seeing him alone. You sighed in relief and opened it all the way, gesturing for him to come in.
“Sorry for screaming. You just scared me is all.”
“It’s alright,” he smiled, “am I ok to close the door? If you’re not comfortable with that we can leave it open.” You nodded, walking over and shutting the door and locking it.
“I trust you, Nagito. Just... not anyone else.”
“Not even Sonia? I don’t think she could hurt a fly....”
“Not even Sonia,” you shook your head, “she’s sweet. It’s always the sweet ones that you don’t expect.” You tried to joke, but Nagito’s expression never faltered. He looked at you with concern and pity, making a knot form in your throat.
If he kept giving you that look.... you might just tell him how you feel.
Not just about the killing game scaring you. You definitely had a crush on him. Maybe that’s another reason why you trusted him.... simp.
“As much as I value humor in helping people keep their hopes up,” he sat down on your bed, gesturing for you to follow, “I don’t think it’s the best way for you to cope right now. We’re all scared, Y/N.... but I’m particularly worried about you.”
“M-Me?” You sat down next to him, trying to avoid contact, both with your eyes and physically. If you looked into his eyes you’d probably break down into tears, and if you brushed up against him you’d be too flustered to talk.
“Yes... I know it’s selfish of me to take it upon myself to help you.... but I notice how you seem to gravitate towards me and trust me. And who am I to not do anything I can to please an Ultimate? So can trash such as myself even do anything to help you?”
“You can stop degrading yourself, for starters.” You frowned. You really didn’t like his comments on himself, but this was a great way to shift the topic away from yourself.
“My apologies, Y/N. What can I do to help?” Dangit. He brought it back to you. You were hoping you’d have to convince him he’s not trash, waste time and hope he forgot about comforting you. But he was determined, and he knew what you were trying to do.
“I-I dunno,” your voice cracked, “I-I’m really ok, don’t worry-“
“Can I hug you?”
“H-Huh?!” His surprise request caught you completely off guard, making you look up at him. And that was his intention. You finally made eye contact with him, your mind and soul shattering into pieces.
As tears threatened to fall and as you started choking on your words due to the ever growing lump in your throat, Nagito swiftly grabbed your shoulders and wrapped his arms around you.
He had no need for self depreciation right now. He felt that he had no right to even breathe in your direction, let along hug you, but he overrides those thought by telling himself that this is to please you, not him.
That was the last straw for you. A loud cry erupted from your throat as tears started to flow, hugging him back and desperately clutching the back of his jacket. He gently rocked you back and forth, rubbing your back and whispering into your ear.
“It’s going to be alright, Y/N. I know you’re scared. We all are.... but I’m going to make sure nothing bad happens to you. I’ll keep you safe, ok?” You simply nodded as a response, still crying as hard. How could he protect you if he had clearly said he was ok to die for hope? Which statement was a lie at this point?
“B-But,” you eventually whimpered, “h-how can you do that if you’re dead?!”
“I’m... I’m not going to die. I’m going to stay alive. For you, my hope.” You shuddered at the nickname, butterflies admittedly forming in your stomach. You simply nodded once again, pulling him closer and burying your face in his neck as the last few sobs escaped your body.
Your tears eventually subsided, leaving you exhausted. You hadn’t cried that hard in so long, you forgot how tiring it was. Your body felt weak, threatening to go limp at any moment.
“N-Nagito,” you lifted your head slightly so he could hear, “I-I might... I might....”
“It’s alright,” he pet your hair (if you don’t have hair or if it’s not very long, imagine him just rubbing your arm), gently massaging your scalp, “sleep, Angel. I’ll still be here in the morning, if you’re ok with me staying.”
“Y-Yes please,” you nodded, curling up against him, “And please... call me that more often...” you mumbled without really thinking, earning a soft chuckle from him.
“Of course, Angel. Now rest. I’ll protect you tonight.” He picked you up and settled onto the bed better, pulling the covers over you as he cradled you to sleep.

You opened your eyes and looked around, an unfamiliar warmth surrounding you. This didn’t feel like a blanket.
You rolled over only to find yourself face to face with an asleep Nagito. You bit your lip to stop yourself from screaming and waking him up. He looked so... peaceful like that. But... why was he here?
Oh.... right. You had a bit of a mental breakdown last night. And he helped you through it, like the kind soul he was. You wanted to repay him for the love he had shown you.
You were trying to think of what you could do, when he stirred and groaned, stretching and opening his eyes. He gave you a sleepy smile when he saw you were awake.
“Good morning, Angel. Did you sleep ok?” Your heart fluttered once again at his nickname. You had forgotten that you asked him to call you that more.
“I-I slept fine, thank you,” your eyes darted around the room, looking at anything but him and his... beautiful face, “um... you didn’t have to stay here all night. I’m sorry you had to sleep in the bed with me...”
“It’s perfectly alright, dear. This may be selfish of me, but I did rather enjoy sleeping here. It... it felt nice to hold someone.” You noticed a small blush form on his cheeks, making you wonder if he felt the same about you as you did him.
“It... felt nice to be held,” you smiled, “I can’t thank you enough, Nagito. Seriously.” He chuckled, leaning forward and resting his forehead against yours.
“Thank you’s are not necessary. Getting to exist in your presence so intimately like this is thanks enough,” he hesitantly reached up, his slim and slightly chilled fingers cupping your cheek, “I understand how afraid you are, love. But... As I said last night: I am going to protect you. I’ll stick by your side and I’ll do everything I humanly can and more to get us out of here together.”
“Yeah,” you nodded, leaning into his touch, “together. You better stick to that.”
“I wouldn’t ever think of failing a promise to an ultimate such as yourself,” he rubbed your cheek with his thumb, “especially you. Specifically you.”
“Why me?”
“Because you’re special to me, S/O,” he looked away, suddenly shy, “it’s one of the reasons I came to comfort you last night. Because I... care... about you.”
That was enough of a confession for you. He liked you back. You nodded, leaning in and connecting your lips for only a moment. He stared at you in shock, making you smile.
“Now you seriously better not die, ok?”

I wish Jensen was as horrified by people shipping Dean with his brother as he seems to be over Destiel.
i'm not gonna lie, i have bad feelings, too. i think that jensen has done a lot of things that have led to lgbt/queer kids feeling invalidated and he has given a lot of people ammunition to bully us over fictional ships. i also think that was entirely unintentional, but that doesnt make it better.
i gotta be honest, i take a lot of the info out there with several grains of salt, especially unverified stuff and fan stories. people like to lie on the internet. (i remember a few years ago someone made up chris evans having a panic attack at a convention and cevans himself had to clear that up bc concerned fans kept messaging him) i know he doesnt like talking about destiel at cons and the few times he did pre-despair werent that positive.
i think bc his first real exposure to shipping was w*ncest he mentally equated shipping to fetishisation and hes not the only one. you can tell from a lot of comments that other actors (sometimes even misha) think fanfic is all about smut and that its mostly written by horny straight women aged 16 to 45. which is incorrect and hurtful, but ok.
the way he talks about the confession scene is jarringly different and enthusiastic. there has been this meet and greet where he got asked a few questions about it and while i, again, like to be sceptical about these types of sources, it does match up with his general behaviour wrg to the confession. i think he genuinely had a change of perspective some time in the later seasons and i dont think he was ever actually horrified by the existence of destiel, but annoyed about his own misinterpretation of what destiel actually meant to the fans. not gonna defend him for that tho, he did contribute to the mistreatment and gaslighting of queer spn fans, even if that was never his intention.
now w*ncest is another thing. it drives me up the wall whenever w*ncest and destiel are in any way put into relation to each other and as much as i love robbie, im fucking mad about them having both of the "ships" in fan fiction in the first place. however: sam and dean CONSISTENTLY react to w*ncest with disgust, confusion and horror, like duh. w*ncest is, iirc, mentioned more times in-universe than destiel as a ship. fan fiction has the only mention of destiel as a fictional ship, whereas w*ncest has been mentioned multiple times before, aka in every episode becky is in. its always portrayed as ridiculous, mostly played for laughs and never taken seriously. to the cast and crew of spn w*ncest is a non-thing bc it disqualifies itself by its own nature. nobody in their right mind (which excludes most w*ncest shippers sadly) would expect them to actually put i//ncest on screen. its easier to joke about this, simply because its so ridiculous.
i think jensen and co dont see w*ncest itself as a 'danger', thats why they never talk about how disgusted they are by it, its a foregone conclusion. it cannot be treated seriously bc its simply too bogus.
destiel however. unless youre a raging homophobe or devout biblical christian there is nothing morally wrong with destiel, which makes it harder to discredit it as a joke, which is why you cant joke about it so easily. not that you should lmao, but i dont claim to know what goes on in these mens heads.
this got way too long so im gonna try to wrap it up:
i think its not that jensen is less horrified by w*ncest than destiel. there would be something really wrong with him if he was. i think he can put w*ncest and all its crazy fans into a box and label it "too ridiculous to care about except when they send my wife rusty nails". i dont claim to know what exactly his problem with destiel was/is, but if i had to make a guess its that he spent a long time misinterpreting what destiel actually was and just treated it as another outlet for horny teens, which i wont defend him for. i think he really mellowed out on that front, but kept his grumpy persona for a while (hes clearly not uncomfortable with ppl thinking thoughts about him and misha in situations or else he wouldnt act like THAT at cons tho, so idk). His positive and enthusiastic comments surrounding the confession and his open-ness about dean reciprocating (which is still a cop out, ngl. idc if he said he didnt want it to be one) ESPECIALLY compared to his glacial silence surrounding the finale show me that he is not at all disgusted or horrified by destiel.
tl;dr this man is an enigma to me and there are a couple of things i hold against him, but i truly dont think he is horrified by destiel.

maybe vanya still gets some training bc of that! because if lila, part-time powerless, trains, and doesn’t use powers for half of battles, maybe vanya, “powerless,” can train and fight too
and i know this isnt a good thing bc like. hellooo child soldiers lmao?? but also vanya would feel like shes more of a part of the family and would have a friend by her side and maybe wouldnt even want to write the book in the first place
but also at the end of s1, when it’s discovered vanya DOES have powers, and they’re the most powerful of them all, actually, maybe lila grows bitter
i mean wouldnt you? the one person who was “less” than you, who you were better than in even the slightest way, is suddenly the baddest bitch around

i think allison might also be a bit humbler before stepping into marriage in regards to using her powers
because if someone uses her own power on her as she’s growing up i feel like she’d learn that doing that has big consequences faster? maybe she’d still rumour her way into some roles or some classy interviews or just in general use her powers to help her career a bit... but i think with her knowing what its like to be rumoured she wouldn’t use it in personal situations. so maybe she wouldnt rumour claire.
maybe claire doesn’t exist at all bc it’s implied she rumoured patrick into falling in love with her :bonk: or maybe she still married patrick but later on because their relationship needs to develop first

lily : how does your muse view their mother ?
magda doesn’t know a lot abt her mum. she knows vague snippets n details bt they’re all very elusive. it’s kind of a tricky subject where her mum’s concerned bc when she was younger she’d come up w all these assumptions abt how her mum was n who she’d be if she were with her but the rational part of magda was like..... u don’t know any of this. ur literally making things up. it’s kind of hard for a kid to have that vital person missing from their life n to resist the urge to fill in the blanks with their own projections so the space feels less empty. it’s like having a tooth missing n ur tongue always going back to poke at the spot in ur gum. there’s a constant reminder of loss in that. magda knows her mum liked to sing bc her dad said once she’d always sing to her belly when she was pregnant. this is a lot of the reason why magda has always cared so much abt music bc she took this fact in her fist n grasped it tight n never let go n in a way grew parts of herself around it. it’s like............. i feel like her mum dying in childbirth gave her lots of issues when it comes to her identity n like. who she is n who she wants to be.......... bc of magda’s issues w her dad i feel like she got into this habit growing up of rly putting who her mum could have been on a pedestal n basing everything around that.... she’d be like I’m More Like Her (a belief which was only accelerated bc her dad would drunkenly say she looked so much like her) n cling onto that so she liked herself more bc the other option was her dad who she loves but he’s also an incredibly flawed person n they hv a complicated relationship...... i think as she’s gotten older she’s realised her mum cld very well have been that way too n putting people on pedestals isn’t the way to go about things but. idk. as a kid she was kind of obsessed w this idea of her n this idea that her mum being gone was the beginning n end of everything wrong in her life. for the most part now magda accepts she never knew her n sometimes even feels stupid for grieving her at all bc she never knew her to grieve in the first place but. there’s a tiny part of magda tht still hangs on to the comfort of what she could have had n it’s obvious by the fact she still keeps a photograph of her folded up in her pillow. she loves the mum she made up in her head n she wishes she got to meet her. there’s this sense tht maybe then she wouldn’t feel like this culmination of missing parts more than a person if she’d had that in her life. sighs n lks away holding my dyed black emo bang.....

cricket is like. the strangest little anomaly of a person FGHKSFGHSFKGH bc like. u would rly think that after everything he’s been thru he would just have this absolutely jaded view of people and life in general and i wouldn’t even......... blame him for it if he did like. i’d understand completely bc he’s experienced A Lot of bad stuff. n yet somehow he just.... idk. i think i wrote in a reply once this comparison of cricket n a cockroach in the sense that they have this incredibly reinforced exoskeleton n even if they’re stomped flat they can keep living n bounce back from it n that’s very him but it’s more specifically the hope inside him. he has this little candle lit that good things can still happen midst all of the terrible things n i genuinely can’t see it snuffing out at any point even tho sometimes he might want it to. sometimes i think he even gets into these frames of mind where it jst infuriates the fk out of him bc in his head he’s like why do u even think good shit can happen when u have sm overwhelming evidence to the contrary but then he’s also like. look u can dwell on the bad or u can notice the way the light falls thru the leaves in the trees and u can think to urself inside ur head as u listen to someone u love talking abt something that makes them happy ‘hey this feeling is nice n there’s a dozen others like it’. idk. against all odds he’s an optimist. he has tinnitus in his left ear n sometimes he pretends the ringing is angels trying to talk to him. he likes to search for the silver linings in things to make them bearable n that’s how he gets by. obviously he knows there’s evil in the world n that a lot of people can be shit bc he has firsthand experience w that but he also believes there are people to serve as the antithesis to that n he wants to focus on them bc like. why give bad stuff the time of day. not necessarily always a positive coping mechanism (if u bottle up bad feelings n thoughts they leak thru one way or another aka his overwhelming anxiety) but like.... i think there’s a lot of bravery in that n i respect him for it i won’t lie. he cld have become very bitter bt instead he’s like that quote that’s like 'the gentleness that comes, not from the absence of violence, but despite the abundance of it'. suddenly slaps his little anxious rump (supportive) (affectionate)

it’s hard to say w ziggy............... i feel like he doesn’t want to think he’s prone to jealousy bc he’s like i’m literally a god wdym i simply wld never give a fk bc i know i’m above all else................. but like. do u actually believe that ziggy. do u. bradley is kind of hard to read romantically like from an outside perspective but slides on my thin rimmed spectacles n picks up my scalpel to delve right in to the nitty gritty of her brain... omg... that sounded... kind of scary actually but. it’s ok. basically settles in. bradley struggles to verbalise her feelings in this regard but also in a general sense honestly.... like she’s spent a lifetime having any vulnerable or negative feeling shut down....... her dad’s the type of personality where it’s like... u can’t win. even tho he’s narcissistic n thinks he’s a god if u compliment him or express affection he’ll act pleased but there’ll also be this register in his eyes where he thinks less of u for it. so this rly had a domino effect in bradley’s emotional expression in all grounds of life...... romance is probably the most frivolous concept to tony so bradley definitely internalised some of these views n wld feel stupid for ever taking anything seriously in that regard or rly investing herself..... she also just. idk. love has only ever left bite marks in bradley’s world so she’d kind of like ‘why wld i ever expose my tender spots n open myself up to someone just so they can sink their teeth in’. i will say tho that like. despite that she can in rare instances develop those feelings n it’s always like..... quite a struggle for her when she does. she doesn’t rly understand it or how to deal w it. she finds talking about it hard n she feels childish or weak in the eyes of whoever knows how she’s feeling. it takes a long time n a lot of work to earn it bt bradley in love is like. ur the only person on the planet who knows how gentle she can b. she’d literally like. touch the face of this one guy i wrote her being in love w when he was sad so gently it was shocking it ws like a love tht deep unlocked a whole other part of her she didn’t know existed. sex is a big part of her love expression jst like. a lot of it. so much. nyla honestly doesn’t mind silence at all........ they always wake up rly early in the morning no matter what time they went to bed. it’s like someone programmed an oven timer into their brain n often when they wake up at 6am or something they’ll go on walks around irving tottering in their own little world which is quite a quiet experience in itself when the rest of the world’s asleep........... always off on impromptu adventures they came up w on the spot.......... sometimes they get lost in their own train of thought too so they just randomly fall silent bc they’re having a whole conversation w themselves inside their head or like. writing a whole children’s story abt an iguana in a trench coat floating in a hot air balloon smoking a little vintage pipe all the way to peru. honestly for every 1 thing nyla says there’s about 4987295749572592745 things they don’t say tht are x100 times stranger n more nonsensical they sort of let it all drift thru their head like an open sieve for the most part. having said tht i think in order to sleep at night they probably need some sort of white noise or smthn................. it’s handy living in a beach house bc they just leave the window open to let the ocean gush bt sometimes if they’ve snuck into like. mido’s bed fr the night or someone’s bed idk the sound of them breathing works too................. they used to always sleep w bob ross playing on loop n that was rly comforting to them esp bc he reminds them a lot of their dad w his calming voice n energy.............. sometimes they’d have taken smthn n they’d literally hallucinate it as their dad instead of bob ross n this happened so many times in a row fr a period of time tht when they finally watched it sober they were like wtf since when did they recast my dad in this show...... on the commission
I was going to talk about it in an older post but then i realized there was just too much I wanted to talk about so here’s my thoughts
Again, SPOILERS + DISCLAIMER, CW for blood/gore and death mentions
I know the tv show is an adaptation of the comics and it should not be a word for word copy of the original comics, but basically changing the WHOLE world is something that is kinda hard to overlook. And one of the main things that was changed in the show was the commission (which is actually called the TEMPS AETRRNALIS in the comic but I am just nitpicking here idrc). As I talked about in another post, the umbrella academy show has a tendency to remove all fantastical or otherworldly aspects from the comics and replaces them with more average stuff. They decided to keep the commission tho (since it would have definitely been too hard to replace) but in doing so they transformed it into something completely different
The Handler: she is a tv show exclusive character. Never appears in the comics and no, she did not recruit Five (he was captured while he was time traveling and also for the record Five had some good times in the apocalypse) I also want to take time to point out the antisemitic traits in her character and how harmful this is (especially since she had ZERO business existing in the first place but whatever 🙄) and i am going to be VERY petty here but UGH EVERYTIME I HEARD HER SPEAK SPANISH I WAS LIKE 🤬🤬🤬 THATS NOT EVEN A REAL SAYING YOU FUKCING IDIOT JUST STOP IT!!! I SWEAR IF I HAVE TO HEAR YOUR TERRIBLE SPANISH AGAIN I WILL [REDACTED]
Carmichael/AJ: Yeah he’s the goldfish guy... im gonna be honest I did NOT like him in the show he felt too out of place and his including was too forced. In the comics you don’t really question it (there are weirder stuff than a talking goldfishh) but tuatv world is so blerg seeing Carmichael there is off putting. He doesn’t belong there and frankly his cameos was more of a "pleasing the comic fans" strategy imo (same way with the Hargreeves being an alien revelation it was more a "look!!! We read the comics too!!! We know he was an alien!!!" but at this point it felt too out of place and forced and made no sense in the plot). Also also:
See one of the main themes in tua is personal identity/humanity and it’s somethings all of the siblings struggle with throughout all three volumes, but Five's specifically is lineked directly with the commission -> they performed a surgery where they inserted the dna of the most notorious killers into him. Hazel and Cha Cha: ok this ones are a little bit sensite and more complicated because I get why they would tone down their characters; they can be disturbing and that wouldn’t sit well with most viewers, BUT at the same time why change them completely? I loved them in the comics, they were, in their own crazy way, funny (read Hazel and Cha Cha dave Christmas and you’ll get what I mean)
Exhibit a we see Cha Cha absolutely down with becoming a scout girl just so he can get cookies:
Exhibit b: they were just these crazy assassins, absolute chaos, probably shared a single brain cell. They seriously thought the best way to kill Five was to end the world? Come on they are absolutely nuts
But the show didn’t even make them at least a little bit crazy... they didn’t even have them wear the masks :( why? And Hazel’s plot w/ agnes? Idk seemed a bit weird to me bc they try to show you he’s "good"? but at the same time he has no real problem killing/torturing other people??? To me including them in s1 was just bad writing, the writers tried to cram too much of the comics into s1 and then were left with very little to work with in s2
I like the fact that we do get to see more of the commission in the tv show compared to the comics, but just like with most aspects of the world it’s watered down, it’s too normal ig

And in such a normal world they have in the comics the commission doesn’t sit well, and it feels so boring after reading the comics. In Number Five's own words:

OK SO I'm here to tell yall about the rarepair I was talking abt earlier aka repliroku (Repliku and Roxas)
I,, would put this under a cut but I dont know how to do that on mobile. Apologies in advance. If someone can tell me that would be nice n I'll edit this as such,, but yeah
(Quick note that I hc repliku as nb and use they/them for them ,, anyway)
So basically how this came to be was I was in the most boring class known to man with the world's most monotone teacher (seriously if it were a competition he'd at least place third worldwide) and I was thinking about Repliku, bc this was around the time that they first slipped into my list of major comfort characters, and I thought itd be cool if they were to be informally adopted by the sea salt trio because of how their experiences relate to each other. Also like, they got those Vibes y'know. Theyd get along I know they would (although at this time I did not realize what exactly Axel did in castle oblivion and. Well. If u know u know but I need to revise Repliku's potential interactions w him now that I've played com). Also because Repliku still has self worth issues and believes themself to just be a copy of Riku, and if any group could help them adjust to life as their own person, especially from experience, it's probably the sea salt trio and it's also because Repliku needs something to do while Sora's gone and everyone else is just Here looking for him so they're getting some new friends now
And that got me wondering abt their individual relationships with each member n all that, and theres some interesting dynamics going on in there especially regarding Xion and them having similar origin stories tho with varying results and with how Axel used to be in castle oblivion with them n all but has changed drastically since, and Then. I thought abt Roxas. I'm gonna be honest I have no idea what exactly it is about the dynamic between Repliku and him that is so appealing to me but in the moment I felt like a total genius and went with it
But like...... is it the shared desire to protect, holding memories of their friends so dearly that it's what kept them going this far? And the way that they both fought so hard to prove they have a right to exist in this world even when they were never meant to be? Being told they are nothing more than the "other", enough that they thought it was true?
Is it the equally hilarious and depressing knowledge that Roxas' relationship with Riku has always been a Little Bit Fucked and now theres ANOTHER ONE (and the slow realization that hey, this kid isn't half bad actually)? (Not to mention Repliku would probably be confused by....... everything that happened when they were stuck in the realm of darkness for over a year. "So why are there 5+ Soras now? And who the fuck are *gestures at over half the cast* these people??")
Or the bastardous shenanigans they could get up to if they put their brain cells together? The way theyd absolutely team up against poor Riku for fun? (by which I mean funny lil pranks n shit not like. murder. Repliku just goes "hey wanna go annoy my brother" and u know Roxas is already halfway there)
The answer is yes to all! They have this mutual understanding of each other, with both the shit they've been through and who they are as people, who and what they value...... they Get It
So like naturally by that point I was like, oh hey, these two would be great friends tbh?
And THEN. I thought. What if they kissed.
Thus the start of me having a rarepair comfort ship that I'm pretty much the sole creator for
And a lot of this ties in with an everyone lives (but Sora's still missing) au I have where those two as well as Xion, Naminé, Vanitas n maybe Ventus form a friend group of their own bc of their shared fucked up lives. They meet up like twice a week bc it's Supposed to be like a therapy thing but they really just hang out n play games n stuff n occasionally open up abt shit and support each other thru it yknow? Basically the average gay friend group at school but like way less drama
