Glorfindel and Erestor for the ship alignment chart?
Tumblr media
Glorestor is so funny because of course it compels me, can you not tell from my blog and entire shipping, even pre-AO3 career? I have been shipping these two for 20+ years, but whether they make sense or not depends on who you ask and what you mean by “makes sense”. I am very aware that Glorfindel and Erestor are shipped literally by virtue of them standing next to each other—twice, mind you, which in the 90's and heydays of shipping, was plenty. (Once, after all, was enough. 🤣)
I can write (and have written lol) entire essays about why I love this ship so much. Glorfindel is my one true favourite Tolkien character—my one true favourite fandom character, period—and have devoured every lore available for him to come up with pretty solid headcanons for the guy, if I do say so myself. Erestor, on the other hand, is pretty much a result of my by now life-long quest to give Glorfindel the most delicious happy ending an absolute Best Boy™ can deserve. These two characters on their own are individually compelling. Glorfindel easily just is, because how good must a person be to be returned from death, to be released from Mandos early, to become an emissary of the Valar, to be reborn better than before, equal to the Maiar? And Erestor—who even is he? What does it take to become the chief counsellor of one of the wisest Elves of the Third Age, in Imladris where Elves who have seen the light of the Trees still dwelt? I even read in a forum (lol omg remember forums) once where people wondered who even had the higher rank: Glorfindel or Erestor. Imagine being at a level where one could potentially be Glorfindel's superior—it blows the mind. But also personally for me, I love the idea that someone like Glorfindel could get quite lonely returning to an unfamiliar world—not only is Gondolin gone, but it's not even Beleriand anymore. I also imagine that returning from Mandos comes with its own grandeur that would set him apart from younger Elves in Middle-earth. It comforts me to know he would still have equals in a world like that, who would not be intimidated by him and with whom he could forge a trusting friendship.
The other thing that works for this ship is the setting with which they could meet. I have said in the Russingon post that the First Age is a painful age to me. Not only that, it's comparatively short; Glorfindel was “Glorfindel of Gondolin” for a mere 400 years (even less) before he died. Meanwhile, assuming he returned to Middle-earth c.a. 1600 in the Second Age (which is the most likely among all “canon” possibilities), the Second Age spanned for a good 3,000+ years; the Third Age, another 3,000+. Lindon under Ereinion Gil-galad’s reign saw the longest peacetime, and Rivendell once made and ruled by Elrond is arguably the most comforting Elven realm ever made. There is simply much more one can do in a setting like this, with characters like this who have so much history—or, in the case of Erestor, potential history. It's that ✨ potential ✨ that I find most compelling, and honestly I have been writing for these two for years and I feel there is still so much one can do and unearth with them.

for the ship asks... Elrond/Maia of the Bruinen?
~ @maglor-my-beloved <3
Hey there and thanks for the ask! Now this was a fun one to think about...
Tumblr media
As you can see I already find it compelling because, to the surprise of everyone, I'm always down to add another Ainu/Elf ship to my collection. I also think that Elrond would be particularly well-suited for a water spirit, not only due to family ties to the sea, but also because I have this headcanon that pretty much all water Ainur (that is Ulmo, his Maiar and all the Maiar who either serve him part time, have served him at some point or serve someone else/nobody but are water-adjacent) fall on a spectrum of water personality, where one end is the stormy, capricious kind (think Ossë) and the other is the chill, go with the flow kind (think Uinen); I think that, regardless of where this Maia would be, their could be a cool dynamic with Elrond.
As for it making sense, well, that ties into what I already mentioned plus the proximity of the two plus the fact that any Ainu can probably sense the Maia heritage of Melian's descendant and might find them particularly interesting.
I kinda wanna write this now....

homestuck was so perfect for autistic teenagers bc it took characters being sorted into categories and having Attributes to its absolute extreme. forget four hogwarts houses, every character has their associated colour their zodiac sign their associated animal their dream planet their god tier class and aspect their typing quirk their pesterchum handle their weapon their planet of x and y, as well as each of them having a handful of other very quantifiable Personality Traits and Interests (e.g. this one is a clown this one is angry this one likes fashion this one is just rufio from hook for some reason) and THEN they all also have their respective ancestors and dancestors(?)(plucked that word from my memory) who have all of those things as WELL
and god not to mention the fucking quadrant system
as a 13-15 year old autistic kid i didnt even need homestuck to have a plot i just happily made a big big spreadsheet of character attributes in my brain

I wanted to try some processes I watched on some artists' reels over at the Insta, and practice designing and coloring manmade/artifiical environments for future projects in particular.
Deep winter also always makes me moody and nostalgic, and I start looking back. I know this is just a consequence of time and technology, but I don't have any of my old Tron art files saved on my laptop. It's so strange considering how much of an impact Tron Legacy and the fandom has had on my life on and off-line. I listened to the ficmix I made for that old fic of mine the other day, and man, I felt so unwell and unhinged. That movie, that OST, that fandom, that fic, that ship, still has such a stranglehold on me years after the fact.
Anyway, if you haven't done so already, go give this beautifully made extended Daft Punk music video a watch.

The Atlantis is the fanciest Earth Ship I've ever seen. For one, it's turquoise. Wow, it looks like there's nothing around it for miles, but supposedly it's in an Earthship Community in Tres Piedras, New Mexico. 2bds, 2ba, $900K.
Tumblr media
Interesting that the walls are painted, usually they're natural adobe and earthy tones. It has the typical long "hall" of plants in the entrance and along the side.
Tumblr media
There's always a garden along the outer wall of the home.
Tumblr media
This one has a stone and tile fireplace. Look at the hole in the wall. I wonder why it has shutters.
Tumblr media
This is a relatively small earth ship. The cans, bottles, or whatever they used in the walls look jewel-like. For an earth ship, this is kind of a classy dining area.
Tumblr media
The kitchen is small and looks sort of standard, except for the architectural salvage upper cabinets.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The primary bedroom is more of a sleeping nook and is separated by curtains.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The covered patio has a swing.
Tumblr media
Must be very dark here at night.
Tumblr media
They have a seating area in the corner, but I wouldn't call this a beautiful view. Almost $1M. I don't know if it's worth it.

Lewis: I'm not a father. I don't have any children.
George: Lew, I lost my shirt. The white Mercedes one. Can you help me to find it?
Lando: Lewis... I accidentally burn my breakfast, what should I do?
Pierre: So Lew, Yuki and I have a plan to skip media day. What do you think about it?
Charles: *rambling to him about how Ferrari fcked up his life*
Max: Umm, Lewis. I know we don't have a great relationship. But now that Daniel and Seb aren't around, and I need an adult advice. So Charles told me to talk to you.
Lewis: Oh my god-

I personally think Maedhros and Fingon make the most sense as far as slash ships in Tolkien go, trumped maybe only by Legolas and Gimli. They just have that many things going for them content-wise. Singling each other out when doing so does not even make sense? Impossible missions and valiant rescues, when all others have lost faith and given up? Gift exchanges in the middle of a war across impossible lands? Despairing and going downhill after the demise of the other? Both staying specifically wifeless and childless, a detail so important that Christopher Tolkien had to go back and say, “Oops I made a mistake editing The Silmarillion, Fingon doesn't actually have a son.” I'm giggling and kicking my feet!
The only reason they score a little lower on the “compels me” scale is because I generally don't dwell in the First Age. It's a short, painful age rife with pain and struggles, and their story doesn't allow for much breathing room. I have to worry about a day job and paying taxes and taking care of my family and so many things that makes one want to escape into a pleasant dream world, not one that is constantly at war. So yes, it's not them, it's me. I need happy moments and happy endings, and while I can arguably write said happy ending myself, I don't want to have to write an epic to get there.

arwen and aragorn for the grid
Thanks for the ask! Look, they even get the cute pink pin ^^
Tumblr media
So I hope nobody is too disappointed that I'm fairly neutral in terms of being compelled. The thing is that Tolkien's canon romances, while very sweet, often lack some spice or vibes or just something I'm missing in order to get really invested.
(For example I do enjoy the canon Valar marriages because I made up all the dynamics myself/tweaked canon/heard takes by other people I found compelling. This is why the above placement on the grid is very much temporary because the second I come up with something for these two or someone gives me something to latch onto, I'll find them way more compelling.)
On the other hand, I placed them very firmly in the "makes sense" category because I do think it's a nice parallel to Beren and Lúthien. Imo it's not strictly necessary from a narrative standpoint, but it does provide a nice extra touch and doesn't take away from either of these two couples.
