okay I watched good omens s2 yesterday with my partner, and I was genuinely very surprised -- I think if you've grown up through superwholock/merlin/the 100/teen wolf type shows where (with the exception periodically of doctor who) you kind of had to make up the good show that something could have been in your head, that colours a lot of your viewing, and to be honest I thought season 1 of good omens was a fine little piece, honoured the book while modernising it somewhat, it was a nice, fun, low stakes time, with a couple of things I might have wanted a tad different but nothing overall awful.
so I was seeing all this meta and gifsets and discussion, while I was waiting to give s2 a watch with my partner and thought "ah, people have made up the good show in their heads again" not that I assumed s2 was going to be a bad show, but that people were taking extra deep plunges into possibilities, the way fandom does, and that was fine. I knew there was a big ol kiss, I had a sense of some kind of argument at the end, and that it was setting up a s3
I also knew that mainstream reviews were calling it (politely) self-indulgent and dependent on whether or not you enjoy david tennant and michael sheen having a good time for just under 6 hours
all in all, expectations of a somewhat mainstream show without too much to think about, a nice, fun low stakes time, moving on...
(EDIT: AND THEN I WROTE A LOT OF WORDS SO YOU CAN IMAGINE THAT MY REACTION WAS QUITE DIFFERENT)
as it turns out it seems these things that were being written on tumblr were discussing the actual text of the show and not things you could extrapolate if you squinted and tilted your head a little to the left as I'm so used to doing, so in fact there is much to think about!
and my first thought was "this is like when you read early discworld books that ask a question like a joke, only to find that over time the answer to that question becomes very serious (and also can be funny at times of course)." how terry pratchett would pick and pick at tropes and notions and social ideas and go "oh now hold on, this seems strange..." starting way back when he thought it was odd that women warriors always seemed to be dressed in metal bikinis and then realising he hadn't done a good enough job of subverting the trope, simply by depicting it and calling it a bit silly
why do goblins always get treated as the villains? what's with this divine succession of kings business? where are the female dwarfs? who do we treat as disposable?
good omens season one went: "haha what if heaven and hell were intensely incapable, bureaucratic, corrupt, and uncaring of the work they did, and we took an angel and a demon and had them actually care? wouldn't that be... a bit silly?" (and it was)
good omens season two went: "what are the consequences for caring when the people who have power over you are incapable, bureaucratic, corrupt, and uncaring? what are the forces that supersede systems built on fear, ignorance, and violent conformity? can people change and break out of/challenge/break down these structures by caring?"
and this was set up with a neat little sleight of hand (to reference aziraphale's switch-and-bait in the episode with the nazi zombies), because the majority of season 2 does feel a bit indulgent: hey, remember those two wacky angel-and-demon characters? watch some more wacky things they did through the ages, watch them take a sojourn through 1827 Edinburgh and do a magic show during the Blitz, and... stop the death of Job's and Sitis' children (actually maybe that whole segment ought to have been what they call "A Clue")
see them try to figure out a kooky mystery, all the while setting up a cute little same-gender romance on their street. watch as everything points towards a happy ending that's all about the two of them realising what they've been to one another all these thousands and thousands (and thousands and thousands) of years- but hold on. lest we forget - and the show has made this point over and over - there are powerful people who control them, who hurt them, and who plan on hurting others, throughout the whole season, and as it turns out they know what they've been to one another for far far longer, and know how to pull their strings...
season 2 then, has to show us these things, not because they're indulgent (well, maybe occasionally, but the apology dance is still important), but because in order to make the ending a tragedy, we first need to understand, properly, the impact that they have had on each other. we need to understand that Aziraphale relied heavily on Crowley to be his moral compass and leaned on black-and-white thinking in order to deal with things, because if it's all grey then where does he fit and what has it all meant and heaven has to be the good guys, even as Job's and Sitis' children are ordered to be killed, it's all he ever had...
and Crowley was always an anchor, needed to trust that Aziraphale was different, needed to bend to every whim that Aziraphale has, because otherwise what's his worth in all this? After having been already deemed worthless by the heaven that Aziraphale needs to believe in?
and that, simplistically described, is the narrative that we're seeing in s2, and alongside that the ways that the changes they have upon each other are noticed, and monitored, and placed under suspicion, and finally... broken up, not by the clumsy, brute force that's been attempted over and over again, but by a promise to return into a violent, controlling system and to "make it better from within"
and all of this is wrapped up in two queer relationships + a third queered-within-the-text relationship that creates the inverse of how it ends for Aziraphale and Crowley (so far). queer love -- whatever shape that has -- is explicitly the shape of non-conformity within this narrative, including within the symbolism of angel-and-demon love of Gabriel and Beelzebub, which in the context of the systems created is considered queer (and one can argue till the cats come home about casting cis actors, about angel-and-demon notions of gender/romance/sexuality, but the "queerness" comes from building something non-conforming to the systems they exist in), and enforced by the explicitly our-world-definition-of queer romance that Nina and Maggie have going on (which, while less high stakes, still contains the background controlling relationship that Nina initially is in)
all of this to say, that I disagree that s2 meanders, or that plotlines happen for the sake of showcasing Aziraphale and Crowley without purpose, or that characters get sidelined (I'd say it sets up a whole host of interesting characters to further get into actually), or that it's strictly mainstream easy-access narrative that's just an excuse for the main creators and actors to get back together.
the love is the point, and this show takes its time to show the love (and the unequal boundary-setting, and the fact that one of them has an undiscussed tragic backstory, and the desperation to belong again, and the fear instilled by oppressive systems, and and and), so that we understand why those last 15 minutes happen the way that they do
it's sleight of hand, and like all good magic, you don't notice until it's happened

Like last time, additional propaganda for me to possibly add to the poll posts can be sent to my asks in the interim between now (Tuesday night) and the night of the 18th. I will take video links, photos, and text propaganda, but not gifs (save those for your reblog propaganda). As a reminder, send these to my asks, not my private messages or submissions—and check the guidelines in the pinned post before you send in!
This was a fun round but absolutely BRUTAL. Thank you all for being here—I'm so, so happy reading your comments, seeing your fancams, talking with you guys in the notes. This is lovely because of you.
See you this weekend!

i’m sure you folks don’t miss my writing in the slightest but i miss writing. severely.
more specifically, i miss writing michael. the fragility of sojourn, the resilience of outpost. the languid gestures, the calculated dialogue and all the little intricacies of the character. but that’s the thing, i never wrote that. i never had the time. more to the point, i never took the time. i rushed everything by assuming readers didn’t have the time or patience for a slow burn just like i didn’t.
but that was a few years ago now. i’m older, more patient, more emotionally charged… obviously less experienced in the writing department but that’s a work in progress. i can do better than before, i can work harder, i can dedicate more of myself to improving what i came here to do.
i guess what i’m asking is, does anybody here read michael anymore? would you still like to? because i have an epic ao3-style slow burn angsty fluffy (eventually) smutty thing in my mind but i don’t know if there’s an audience for it. let me know and i’ll get to it!

DC Legacy
The basic premise of this is that the time has come for older heroes to step down and the next generation take their place. Clark Kent is now the editor and owner of the Daily Planet and vows to lead them into the future while keeping their dedication to the truth. Diana Prince is now Queen of the Amazons and has relinquished her title as Wonder Woman though she still joins the Justice Society when needed. Bruce Wayne has become mayor of Gotham City and intends to use the power of the office to fight crime at the root. However the intensified spotlight means he must give up the cowl. Others such as Oliver Queen have stepped down from active duty to become teachers to the next generation, passing down their skills and knowledge. Archie represents the MAGA Republicans and Michael represents the current Colonizer Liberal Wing of the Democratic Party. Both are ignorant of our glorious past in Africa and our sojourn here in America. Neither genuinely represents our interests. One represents the Wolf and the other represents the Fox that Malcom talked about.

What are your sins?
Sojourn!Michael Langdon x gender neutral reader
Warnings: mentions of death, light satanism (if that’s a thing)
Tumblr media
Her voice is brash and grating. The garish red she wore could not be more fitting, with its loudness and lack of subtlety. You don’t know why you keep returning to this congregation. The admission process was a joke, which may explain the pitiful leader and members. Surely there was something better than this.
The creak of a door signalled a potential escapee. You feel relief on their part, and wonder what’s stopping you from doing the same. Her unblinking eyes and tense jaw turn to you. You feel your heartbeat more intensely following her question:
What are your sins?
Lips part, and shut. You blink too many times, and an awareness of it only worsens the behaviour. Why the fuck did you sit in the front row?
She looks at you with furrowed brows for a few counts, before opening the question to everyone. You feel heat brush over your face. So much for being above all of this.
The replies are almost as pathetic as your lack of one, petty theft, gun money and adultery. With the bar this low, your actions seem devilish. Were they? You don’t think so, but you decide to get a second opinion.
“Actually, I do have one.” The confidence in your voice is short-lived. She looks at you expectantly, and you feel the intrigue of the sad souls around you.
Voice small, you begin unclearly, before she demands that you speak up. The second time is better, desensitised.
“I killed him, I killed a person.”
You have their attention now, this was a step up in severity, to say the least. She grins, shouts her praise, and tells you to stand and inspire the ‘weaklings’.
You clear your throat, and try to diguise your trembling hands by holding them against the dark fabric brushing your thighs. Most everyone looks morbidly interested, but one unfamiliar face appears transfixed, desperate to hear the events.
Tangled, honey-tinted hair, light stubble framing parted full lips, glossy eyes so tired they looked bruised. You may be as equally as enthralled by him. You focus on the space around him, eyes flitting back to him to observe how he digests your story.
“It wasn’t senseless, or random. I may have planned it, but he well and truly deserved worse than what he got. To be honest, I was surprised by my own strength. I mean, keeping someone’s head underwater while they scratch and kick and bite is no easy feat. Drowning doesn’t happen in thirty seconds, and even after he stopped moving I had to hold him down - to make sure.”
You catch your breath, slightly dissociated, no longer aware of their reactions. You don’t know when to stop, so you keep going.
“It was yesterday, in the evening. He’s still there. But I drained the tub and refilled it with ice. I didn’t think about the fact that it would melt, though.”
Heat rises to your face a second time when you see him smile warmly at you, as if you said something endearing. You are once again brought back to reality, reluctantly noting the rest of the room. Some look nauseated, others inspired.
She once again litters you with praise as you return to your seat. For the remainder of the meeting, your mind is somewhere else entirely. You register movement around you as people start to leave, others staying for the shitty potluck. Arms crossed and eyes lowered, you languidly move towards the staircase. That was stupid, a stupid fucking thing to say in front of so many people. What if someone reports you, or tries to copy you or -
“Good riddance. To whoever it was. I’m sure you did the world a favour.” Up close, you can see just how disheveled and weary he looks. A gentle smile graces his features, and when you don’t reply, he gives a light nod and ascends the stairs.
You follow, reaching out to stop him, not willing to let him go just yet. The motion is messy, and you end up with the crumpled black shirtsleeve in your tight grip. Nice fucking going.
He stops suddenly, upper body twisting round. His raised eyebrows makes you cringe slightly, as you lean into the wall to let others filter past.
“I could use some help. You know, with the body. If you’re interested.” Another excellent move on your part.
His eyes soften, and you think he would have laughed if he was any less fatigued. He nods, tells you to lead the way. So you do. At some point during the walk home, you notice that your hands are loosely intertwined. You’ve been so fraught with nervous energy, that you don’t remember who moved first.
It’s quiet, mostly your own voice. You talk about where you live, potential dinner ideas, and that forensic psychology module you did once. He looks relieved when you insist that he takes a nap before anything else, and you when confirm that the shower is separate from the bath.
Only when you’re outside the building do you think to ask the blonde boy’s name, learning that it’s Michael. His delicate features work with his name, you decide.
“Like the Archangel. Cute.” He scoffs at that.
“Not quite. Really, I could prove you wrong there.”

I sent your post regarding destigmatizing transmasculinity to everyone I know because it hit the nail on the fucking head without diving into weird "Therefore, it is trans women's fault" rhetoric that I see a shocking increase of on this website. However, I do notice a lot of discourse regarding the relationship between gender and race being led primarily by white trans people who have fundamentally different interactions than I do, and I've had plenty of arguments about how no, black transmasc people don't have privilage over black transfem people because being percieved as a gnc black woman or a black man are equally dangerous (speaking as a butch black transfem). Thoughts?
First off, thank you for reading the post and sharing it. My main reasoning behind the post was because I was also frustrated by the white dominant ideology regarding trans identities, especially in regards to gender and race (and in how they use trans women as a scape goat for transphobia and colonialism). Gender is racialized, and unfortunately white trans people view their gender as outside of race because they already epitomize normalcy in terms of race. I want to also make it clear that I don’t speak for Black folks, and I’m simply relaying information of what I have learned over the years of interacting with Black communities, the history I have learned in my courses with Black professors over the years (both focusing on queer theory and Black history in the US), and the books I have been reading for my own research. If i have any information or ideas incorrect, I would be happy to adjust them accordingly ^-^
The lack of critical gender reading is also another issue within the community in terms of why we have so many issues with white trans people speaking over BIPOC trans people, especially Black trans people. I find that white queer people seem to only read about white queer people, and never want to explore outside of that. No Audre Lorde, no Bell Hooks, no Ida B wells, no Sojourner Truth, no June Jordan, no Marsha P Johnson or Slyvia Rivera, no Essex Hemphill or Arturo Islas, nothing. Race is already difficult to grapple with for white people, and they believe our shared queerness is enough to unite us all under the same struggle of sexual and gender oppression. This isn't true obviously, and quick historical knowledge about the history of ballroom, urban culture in cities, the policing of BIPOC bodies and identity in bars/clubs/street corners, even going further with the women's suffrage movement being anit-Black and saying that they supported all women (many suffragists tokenized Black women), but did not want Black men to have a vote/power, etc.
The history of the US has always made gender racialized. From the moment Columbus stepped foot into the Americas, thought the Natives were “sodomites” and “hemaphrodites”, they thought them overtly sexual and called them animals for their lack of clothing. The same was applied to Black people in the US; their dehumanization was racialized just as much as it was gendered; Black women were seen as “jezebels” to justify the sexual violence against them, and Black men were viewed as “beasts of burden” to justify the labor and the hypersexuality imposed onto them. Everything that gender is today has ALWAYS been because of white people. Theatre in the 20s and 30s used Black face to show “pansy” behavior against “normal heterosexual behavior”, making it clear that normal = white (my sources here are based on Michael Bronski’s A Queer History of the United States). This is quite literally not that hard to understand, but unfortunately white ideas about “male privilege” and misogyny fails Black communities, especially trans Black people.
Male privilege seems to only exist at it’s rawest form in white cisgender heterosexual men. White cisgender gay men are close after; historically they have always been able to obtain employment and housing and resources at rates much higher than even white lesbians throughout history. Anyone outside of this scope, however, does not have male privilege, and even Brown men, despite living and participating in the patriarchy (like we all do), don’t experience male privilege the same way white men do. Sure, maybe Brown and Black cisgender men will not have much trouble getting employment compared to Black and Brown women, but the rates at which they are policed, both by institutions and society/people, also places them at a disadvantage. BIPOC men experience a racialized manhood, one that inherently has already failed them on account of not being white.
This is why intersectionality is important, and white people just don’t have a good grasp on it, no matter how many times they watch Kimberle Crenshaw’s TEDx talk (lol). When your gender isn’t racialized, you have no reference for what a racialized gender feels like. Yes, female presenting and GNC presenting and “non-passing” BIPoC individuals face more discrimination and oppression than BIPOC men, but not all BIPOC men are cisgender, heterosexual, monogamous, or “male” presenting. I always say no bigot is going to ask what identity you are before calling you a slur, and the same is just as true for BIPOC queer people. No racist is going to make sure to ask if you’re Black or mixed before calling you the “correct slur”, many of them see anyone who is outside the white heterosexual cisgender norm and go with the first slur they can think of. THAT is why there is no clear hierarchy in terms of how much oppression you face according to your identities when you’re a queer BIPOC. Yes, colorism, yes cisgender privilege, yes heterosexual privilege, yes, this is why intersectionality exists, but I don’t believe oppression should always be quantified when it comes to racialized gender and sexuality. BIPOC queer people are already well versed in intersectionality; we already care and cherish for each other based on our shared struggles. I’ve quite literally heard more discourse regarding transmasc vs trans femme privilege from white queers than from BIPOC queers. THAT says enough about the difference of where our respective communities are at. BIPOC queer people are already leagues ahead when it comes to intersectionality; white queer people are still stuck quoting Kimberle Crenshaw on their email signatures.
I’m not sure if I answered this to the fullest of my abilities, but I wanted to make the effort to give you my thoughts. I thank you for such a wonderful question. I am not the first or last person to talk about this, and I encourage anyone who wants to do more research to look into the various authors I have mentioned, as well as BIPOC creators online. I also recognize that non-Black folks have their duty to learn about this as well, and if I can contribute to that conversation for other non-Black people so that they are more compassionate and understanding to Black experiences, then I’m grateful to have expressed my thoughts. (ps, if there r any spelling mistakes, im sorry, but I dont proofread my asks before sending them off)
Like I mentioned before, I’m happy to adjust and correct myself, This is a very complex issue and takes relearning years of history. It’s not easy, but it’s possible.
Have a great day my friend!
