I think the reason why I almost cried over the boy and the heron's animation is because it's hand drawn in a world full of 3d animation that tries to impress you at every stage.

(Minor spoilers for the boy and the heron, no plot points tho)

Encanto's animation was impressive for the first few minutes, then it looked every other animates movie from the 2020s. The boy and the heron does a lot less than western (and 3d) animated movies for most of the movie (excluding the backgrounds because those were paintings. Like, actual paintings.) But when it needs to, it can do more than you thought possible. They clearly spent more time on making the movements human than making it colourful and flashy.

This subtlety is also extended into the character designs. In anime especially, but to some extent pixar as well, they make regular people look like humans have sexual dimorphism, but I couldn’t tell what gender Kiriko was supposed to be until she started to speak and until my suspicions were confirmed that the clothes she wore were in fact the same ones she wore in the other world. I am also a big fan of old wrinkly people so I'm glad they were once again present in a ghibli film. I think they have a knack for portraying people from different stages of life realistically. Also a big fan of how Mahito had so much personality, especially for a 12 yo protagonist of an adventure movie. Those tweens are usually given the cookie cutter hero personality, but robbed of actual humanity.

Really glad that the Duffs are supporting the strike cause it might actually help negotiations move along quicker and in better support of the writers. Netflix execs must be shaking sweating crying now that their big cash cow is delaying their production.

The more I think about it the more I like how unstructured The Boy and the Heron feels. It encapsulates the experiences of dealing with grief and being a child growing up so well.

Something happened that you don't really understand, and now everything's changing, and the world is so much bigger than you thought it was. Sometimes you're forced into engaging with how much more there is to life. Sometimes you choose to step forward, even if you don't know what it means yet. Sometimes you are alone, sometimes you will be by people who annoy you but whom you help anyway, oftentimes there will be people to help you through it. You are much more clever than people would expect, and yet you feel impotent when you can't do anything about the things you care for. What do you even care about? The memory of what you've lost hits you at random moments, making you cry just when you managed to distract yourself; you look back even as you walk forward. You don't understand why you do the things you do. It just felt like the right thing to do. It just felt like it would help, even when it hurt you. Maybe you'll find their meaning eventually. There are so many things that are new and beautiful, and yet the things that matter are familiar, even painfully so. There are people who want you to take on their legacies, shoulder new burdens even when they seem ridiculous to you - and yet you cannot turn the possibility of change away. There is a history that calls to you, but you don't know how to express it. There are chances for you to turn back, but you're never quite done yet. You have to carve your own path. You have to see things for yourself. You remember in your own time and learn, even when some say forgetting would be kinder. One fleeting beauty is exchanged for the contentment you have built. How do you live? You stumble, and discover, and embrace the memories, and bring them with you as you keep moving. You don't know how you live, but somehow you do. There is time. And maybe, someday, leaving and going home will feel the same. Maybe you'll build home again.

the amount of animation industry people openly shitting on hazbin for things like taking the worst interpretation of tiny cuts of footage, art style, etc while absolutely sobbing crocodile tears over the ghost and molly mcgee-- when i can tell u basically all these industry accounts that werent directly involved in production didnt give a shit about before the cancellation announcement. ok after rewatching mlp eps in kor dub on netflix (its rly cute!!!) i went hunting for more cartoons dubbed in korean and sat thru a few mid ones BUT THEN I FOUND!!! KIPO AND THE AGE OF WONDERBEASTS!!! KOR DUB!!! AND THE CASTING IS RLY GOOD TOO AAAH... im ecstatic... I've been wanting to rewatch this anyway im so excited to rewatch in kor... havent looked up the cast but recognize park jiyun (parfait cookie, also twilight in mlp dub lol) as kipo and definitely thats shim gyuhyuk (herb cookie, yoosung, khun xiao eunyung wei wuxian etc...) as benson... i screamed lmao... and not sure who wolf's VA is but she's my fav one SHE SOUNDS SO PERFECT OMG... also i forgot how good the anim and music and everything is PLS WATCH KIPO IF U HAVENT ALREADY
