just learned about the ‘work wives’. im appalled, ngl!!

imagine the boys coming to visit and johnny’s talking loud and everything, laughing in his slight intoxication, then saying, “mary would be pissed if she was here, y’know?”

simon’s out of earshot when johnny hiccups this and only kyle’s around to hear but the sudden tensing of kyle’s body says enough about the gravity of johnny’s statement.

“oh,” you say with a quiet chuckle, hoping you sound fine. “would she now?”

johnny hums, nodding sagely. “been askin’ how much better the ‘real wife’ is. i told her she’s weird for askin’ me that because it’s not like she’s a fake wife but–” he stumbles as he leans towards you, “she still thinks y’r not real an’ that LT’s playin’ hard to get.”

you breathe in sharply, your hands curling into fists. kyle sighs deeply before he’s reaching forward and slapping the back of johnny’s head lightly. he then turns to you with a small smile. the action usually comforts you but it raises your hackles this time, making you curl into yourself in anxious anticipation of what kyle would say.

would he say a rebuttal? contest johnny’s story? would he tell you to take it easy and that you’ve got nothing to worry about, as though hearing that your husband has a coworker who blatantly crosses the line of work relationship isn’t worrying? would-

“our lieutenant asked her to be transferred. she’s gone by monday, love.” kyle smiles and reaches out towards you before hesitating. he turns to you and you don’t know what he sees in your eyes but it makes him – and johnny, stumbling feet and alcohol breath and all – pull you in for a short hug.

“don’t worry,” kyle says, just like you thought but not in the way you expected him to utter. “LT didn’t waste anytime reporting her.”

he pauses, mulling, then, “johnny here wasn’t supposed to say anything because it’s not his–” he shoots johnny a pointed look, one that johnny misses anyway. “place to disclose what happened. not his story to share.”

you sniffle, discreetly wiping away the tears that tickle your cheeks. kyle pretends to not see you crying.

“thank you,” you murmur. kyle nods, still smiling softly. comfortingly. “i’ll look for si now, if that is fine?”

“of course,” he says, tugging johnny to his side with a grunt. “about time sergeant hits the bed too.”

you nod, watching as the two stumble away, before turning to look for simon. across the room, you see him already looking at you.

and even if it’s just that, it eases the the knot in your chest.

Please take a look at this from TikTok, it’s extremely important as our US government is doing all they can to attack more children in this country. We must do everything we can to protect all American children regardless of different backgrounds.
