It's the Annual Coven Appreciation Festival and the Coven Heads have all set up various demonstrations of their coven’s talents.

Hiii, happy Wbw! If you don't mind, I'm taking Asks too! In that Fantasy worl of yours, how prevalent are organisations or institutions that hold great power or influence over a population or are, yet aren't quite "nations". Things like criminal syndicates, or other informal power structures?

The longer answer:

So remember how the DUR is basically just a bunch of independent countries in a big trench coat? A large part of that is due to the influence of organized crime. As you can imagine, the various powerful syndicates and crime lords benefit from having a squabbling and ineffective government, because they become the defacto rulers when the government fails. The biggest crime organization in the Union is the Adleade Coven, run by the magical Adleade family. (A side note, Coven with a capital C is the crime organization. Coven with a lowercase c is the regular witchy organizations that exist in Ritanian and Bresian towns.)

The Adleade Coven has its long fingers in everything from racketeering to bribery to arms dealing, and they'd like to keep it that way. The new IRIO could be a big blow to their activities, but so far the IRIO has kept itself to smaller targets, leaving the big organizations mostly alone. This is probably a self preservation tactic, as the IRIO is still young and generally unrespected. However, rumors indicate that the new IRIO head may have his sights set on bigger targets.

Interestingly enough, the Covens and other organized crime do not appreciate the war overseas. War is good for business, of course, but there must be a business to profit from it, and the war in Bresia has become a scorched earth campaign on both sides. Aligned interests have historically resulted in very interesting alliances...

Oh.

To call WT's actions "antics" would be reducing the severity of what they're doing to creators. This is unacceptable behavior and it should be all the more reason for creators to start exploring other career paths outside of WT. For years they've been meticulously crafting an environment where people believe that WT is the only path to success, where WT controls the degree of success creators can achieve, from the manipulation of the promotional system to the lack of tagging and proper search functions on the app. Now that they've boiled the frog to this point, they're cashing out by flooding the platform with cheap imports, implementing AI tools, and of course, trying to use their contracts as a way to trap creators and keep them from owning their own IP's and maximizing on their own success.

I said it before and I'll say it again - Webtoons is planning to go public with their IPO this summer, so it would be a real shame if creators spoke up about the underhanded tactics used by WT to keep them from finding success in their own works. At the very least, it should serve as a reminder to all of us that companies like these can't amass billions without exploiting people along the way.

We can't even use "they're creating jobs for comic creators" as a reason to want to see WT succeed in spite of their flaws anymore because they're literally ruining people's careers, cutting them off before they've even started. That's not the platform being "flawed", that's the platform and the system it's built on being broken, full stop.
