The Meeting on the Turret Stairs but Make It Shadowgast
After more than a year, this painting is done! This is one of my favorite paintings, and it was wonderful to reimagine it to suit one of my favorite pairings. :D This is by far the most I have ever worked on a painting, and I learned so much while making it. Please enjoy all the details I crammed in there to find.
Some close-ups under the cut!
And where it started, the original painting and the sketch:
Cheers, all 🥂💜🧡

I didn't know it was an your pfp was an Irish painting. The fact that it's watercolour is beyond amazing!
Yes! It's one of my favorites, definitely on the list to see in person. It's tragic and filled with so much yearning and ugh. I love it.
Summary from The National Gallery of Ireland:
The subject is taken from a medieval Danish ballad translated by Burton’s friend Whitley Stokes in 1855, which tells the story of Hellelil, who fell in love with her personal guard Hildebrand, Prince of Engelland. Her father disapproved of the relationship and ordered her seven brothers to kill the young prince. Burton chose to imagine a romantic moment from the story before the terrible end: the final meeting of the two lovers.

Milves from one of my campaigns that I am obsessed with. Based on the painting The Meeting on the Turret Stairs by Frederic William Burton.
[ID: A drawing of two women inside a stone stairwell. One of them is a thin tiefling with light blue skin, turquoise hair, and long, white horns that sweep straight back. She wears a royal blue dress with silver accents and draping sleeves. Her back is to the viewer, and only the top half of her face is visible as she turns back toward the other woman, who is embracing her arm with closed eyes. She is muscular and light-skinned with ginger hair that has been done up and gold laurel leaves behind her ears. She wears a sleeveless Grecian-style dress in dark magenta. The drawing is framed as though the viewer is looking in on it from a window, and the women are positioned as though they were passing each other on the stairs before they stopped. End ID.]

No, but, the fact that touching the hand to the forehead is considered a gesture of thankfulness and respect. That kissing the hand is a respectful greeting, one of admiration; of devotion. That bowing and kneeling, ducking oneself below the level of the other, is a literal gesture of allegiance - a vassal position.
That the knight would often wear the colors of his lady (that's the gold mirroring! That's the symbolism!). That Hamburg literally was like what if...I touched her hand to my face, delicately touched her wrist, expecting no more from her, but she is the one to lift up, to assure of reciprocal desire. That others have him touch her hand but remove it as though it were improper to be so bold. That he, apparently, pledged himself to her for the *rest of his life*.
Gosh!!! I can't just be expected to be normal about this.
