Tuesday, 24th October
Ace of Diamonds | Effort/Rest

How does this work?
I've made up two lists of daily prompts, above, to get you started. Using them is encouraged but entirely optional, and you may do as many or as few as you'd like. One per day is great, and one in one week also great. You can pick and mix, stick with one list, do both, or even just do your own thing entirely.
You can start working on them any time from right now up until during ace week, but if you're comfortable sharing them be sure to schedule or save them for the date and either @ me here at @acepodcastweek, or tag them with #ace podcast week, which I'll check daily up until November 1st.
You can join in by:
Creating art of any kind: visual, baking, music, etc
Writing fanfic
Doing poetry
Media analysis
Making recommendation lists
Holding polls
Highlighting creators
Sharing headcanons
And whatever else might strike your fancy.
Whether you want to dote on (or, let's be real, torment) your favourite ace characters, help other people find new shows they'd like, show the creative teams behind these works your appreciation, flex your brain creatively, just think it'd be interesting, or any other one of a myriad reasons, you're welcome to give it a go.
Image descriptions for visual art are not mandatory, but are strongly encouraged.
Creator Featurettes
Podcast creators and contributors who are acespec or have acespec characters are very welcome to put together little features of their characters and/or projects in advance of (or during) the week, which I'll reblog here.
Resources
There are many acespec characters in audio fiction, and I've attached two lists below to get you started.
Questions & Queries
If you have any questions, concerns, ideas, or anything else in that realm, get in touch with me here. You can drop them in the comments, my DMs, or send me an ask. Is there something I could be doing better? Let me know!
If you run any kind of community group or are a creator and would like to run a podcast ace week event, go for it. I sure don't have exclusive rights, and would welcome the company. If you let me know, I'll even promo it.
A list of asked and anticipated questions can be found here, and will be updated as additional questions are asked.

Ask about tma fanfics you say? 👀
No but fr the way I got so excited when I saw pages and pages had been updated
I love how passive aggressive and snippy leitner was to Jon and Elias and I love the part about the highland cows sm, good for Martin getting some more responsibility (even if he may not have the experience to warrant it, he deserves it)
I was wondering what prompted the thing about Jon reviewing the poetry analysis and why Elias got so upset at the no notes part? I mean I do think Jon had a good point but I’m thinking it was maybe Elias was just pissy about the attitude
I’m also interested about the poem Martin wrote during all that especially with the stimulus he was given
Great chapter as always chefs kiss
ALSO ALSO
The way that you wrote about the scenery in this chapter had me in a trance GAHHH it was just so beautiful and well written and the way that I could so clearly visualize it was just>>>>
Omg thank you 😭😭😭 we’re in the final stretch and I’m so anxious for it to be finished.
I’ve always seen Leitner as being a crotchety old weirdo (and I kinda agree with the theory that he’s Martin’s dad. Not in Pages and Pages, but in TMA. So I figured they should get along. Besides, who can hate Martin? He’s so cute!).
I don’t want to give too much away, but I’m trying to draw parallels between Elias making Jon into the Archive and Professional Editor Elias making Jon into a better editor. He already made Martin write it to make him a better poet, why not use it to test Jon, too?
And if Jon’s not willing to realize his full potential, well, that’s what Elias is here for.
(Plus Jon is kind of a brat and is like “I don’t like poetry therefore I don’t have to edit it so there.” It’s supposed to be implied he’s not even putting in effort).
The poem will come up later!
Really?? The scenery?? Wow thank you!!
You can read my fic Pages and Pages on Ao3!

A Month of Disabled Prompts;
(Note; While the goal is to do one a day, please go at your own pace, this is for fun after all!)
1.  Prompt blogger delays posts for months due to fatigue...and refusing to reorganise their posts so they could write less. Stubborness is a wicked little creature that bites.
2.  Who cares about not being able to form words clearly as long as you can scream in time with the music?
3.  They returned to find a fort made from old video tapes and honestly they should have expected as much.
4.  “You’re telling me that they are in correspondence with a space fairing species whose entire culture works via non-visual communication and not a single person thought to get me involved?”
5.  Parent and child get inventive with their game of catwalk fashion.
6.   They left their wheelchair in the same room as a sorcerer one time and this is what they get.
7.  Ballet production makes good use of their leads use of prosthetics to create a more dramatic and unique rendition of cinderella.
8.  Buying skincare products was a quest all of its own.
9.  “How many spoons do you think it would take me to kill him?”
10.  Each time their sibling finished the first draft of their story they rewrote it according to their reactions, as they could not remember the first time the draft gradually became a story that always left them smiling.
11.  Sometimes the only way to deal with gut pain is to speak spiteful dramatic poetry to the gods who may or maynot actually be around to listen.
12.  There’s a one man band whose body is an instrument, music follows him as he rolls by.
13.  They had a pocket book that no one knew about in which they kept a detailed list of meals that would suit their beloved.
14.  In an apocalyptic wasteland one traveller is struggling to teach their new robo buddy not to react to unintended comands and signals brought about by their terrets.
15.  “I’m telling you right now that if it isn’t colour coded then nothing is getting done.”
16.  The nurse caught them embroidering their hospital gown.
17.  Missing a sentimental tatoo, they find another means to carry that sentiment with them.
18.  Narcolepsy is somewhat less burdonsome when the deity of dreams and sleep likes to learn about the waking world.
19.  They had found it, the perfect material, the very thing that would cover as many surfaces in their home as feasably possible.
20.  “They call it the bowles of hell for a reason.”
21.  If they were going to be hooked up to these machines from now on they they were going to make sure they were cyber punk as possible.
22.  There is a woman in the woods whose hobby it is to knit custom gloves, scarves, socks and hats for those who struggle to find the right fit. All she needs in return is a story.
23.  The flatmate situation got a lot easier once it became clear that the chore schedule was unreadable to half the residence.
24.  They had sat at their side on one of their worst days in an attempt to comfort, when seeming to fail they offered to introduce their funnier friend only to turn away to reveal a crudely drawn face on the back of their bald head, which worked a lot better.
25.  Prophecies and dyslexia do not mix well...or perhaps they do?
26.  “Yes I still need it! Believe it or not vampirism is not a cure for paraplegia.”
27.  It was only once they introduced their knew friends to their family that they became aware as to why their face blindness was not an issue on this case and the reason said friends had been so baffled when they first met.
28.  Unable to play their instrument while wearing the wrist braces they struggle not to fall into a slump.
29.  Their grandfather boasted he could juggle anything they threw at him, and so he did, which led to a slight misunderstanding with the neighbours.
30.  Valentines was approaching, which meant they needed an epipen in every possible place they could store one.
31.  How to explain to a heat radiating alien that you have been lingering around them because their aura reduces pain without coming across as really wierd about it.
Completion Bonus!;
Do a one shot or a sketch for something you love that you haven’t had the chance to do for a while! Or read one chapter of an unfinished story! Or watch one episode or movie of that thing you like! Satisfy whatever urge you have right now, you have all the time in the world for this so relax and treat yourself, you did great!

Blog #4
Hey! This week’s blog prompt our relationship with interpreting nature through art.
I wanted to start by answering the first question, and considering my own relationship with looking at nature through art. One of my favourite ways to experience nature interpretation through art is through nature documentaries. Although they might also be educational, I personally think the best ones also have an element of story to them and they’re always beautiful to watch. Also, I think it’s fascinating to see behind-the-scenes of how all these breathtaking videos of nature are recorded. It lets me learn about and see places I’ve never been anywhere near, and feel like I’m right there. The diversity of animals, plants, and even geology on our planet is incredible, and I really appreciate all the work that goes into creating art to share it. As much as getting outside is a great way to interpret nature, art can be an accessible and inspiring way to interpret nature. It can be a way to teach, but it can also be a way to share a love of and connection to nature with other people.
Often the first idea that comes to mind when someone thinks of nature interpretation is guided hikes and walks. While it was discussed in this week’s readings how these also have an element of art to them, I also think it’s important to incorporate other forms of art, whether that be books, poetry, photography, painting, videos, or anything else. Art is an integral part of nature communication, I think one of the most important things it does is just make people care. While there may be no official definition for “art” in general, I think it always has something to do with expression of feeling, and be able to share that expression with other people. Feeling disconnected from nature seems to be a relatively common thing, and I think that art can be an incredibly important remedy to that. While it may not always be possible to drop everything and go for a backpacking trip, art is almost always accessible in some form, and can be way to bring nature into our own lives even when it sometimes feels far away.
This weeks prompt and reading made me consider other aspects of how I might want to include nature interpretation through art in my career. Personally, I’m not much of a visual artist, I hadn’t really considered bringing art into my work even if I might enjoy it in some forms as a hobby. But I would like to find a way to incorporate it more into my life. For example, I love taking photos when I’m outside. Being able to look back at them later always reminds me of the experience and place where it was taken. They also give me a way to share something I care about with friends and family. Art is a powerful form of communication and connection, and there are so many different ways to include art when interpreting nature.

Rust Belt Jessie’s NaPoWriMo 2023 Prompts: BONUS ACTIVITY!
make a poetry video
One thing I hate about the Now is the TikTok-ification of everything. It’s like every social media site has ‘reels’ or ‘stories’ or a ‘live’ feature now, and everyone is pressured to upload video content alongside whatever else they’re posting. And the videos have to be short and funny, or short and poignant—but poignant in a clickbait-y, easily digestible/likable/shareable way, not in a poetic way* **
But, paradoxically, one thing I dig about the Now is that most everyone has a camera/audio recorder in their pockets at all times, and those self-same devices can run apps that act as mini film studios.
I used to want to be a filmmaker. I’ve always written (poetry, and other stuff), but once upon, I thought I was gonna be the next Jim Jarmusch. I even studied film, briefly, at the start of my college career.*** But my life changed and my plans changed, and I didn’t continue with it.
Then, in late 2019, FIVE:2:ONE magazine accepted three of my poems—and asked me to make either an audio recording or a video to go along with them. I’d already done a lot of spoken word audio—and that’s something I still do—so I decided to make a video, for the hell of it. And then I decided that, rather than record a simple video of me reading said poems, I’d make a poetic short film.
Since then, I’ve made several others along the same vein. Some feature full poems, some feature excerpts from longer poems, and still others act as trailers for bigger poetry projects and thus feature excerpts from a number of poems.
So, if you’re up for it, this is what I want you to do with this bonus activity: pick a poem (maybe one you wrote from one of these exercises!); or, if it’s a super-long poem, choose an excerpt. Then, make a short film from/with/of it.
You might include an audio track of you (or someone else) reading the poem. You might not, and instead go silent film-style, and put the text of the poem in the film. You might include photographs or other visual art (by you, or by someone else), or video clips (ditto). You might include music (your music, someone else’s music).**** You get the idea. Have fun.***** Get weird.
Since we’re resisting the TikTok-ification of everything, you obviously don’t need to share your poetic short film on social media, or anywhere. But if you do decide to share it, I hope you contact me and let me know where I can watch it. Cuz I really, really wanna see it.
Recommended viewing:
Three Poems by Jessie Lynn McMains (yeah, most of these are gonna be my own, because I honestly don’t know of many other people doing this right now) Self-Portrait with Ghosts and Trains (Trailer) Dear One (Coney Island Baby) Left of the Dial (Trailer) Also, Carrie Olivia Adams’s Forty-One Jane Doe’s comes with a DVD that includes short films of some of the poems. If you can track that down, I highly recommend it.
Resources:
Flickr (a great place for finding Public Domain and Creative Commons images and videos) Unsplash (ditto!) Pixabay (ditto ditto!) Free Music Archive (great for finding Creative Commons music) Free Sound (great for finding Creative Commons sound effects)
*Don’t even get me started on “Instagram” poetry. I’m all for people sharing their work on whatever platforms they choose, and I’m all for short/“simple” poems if that’s the form the poem demands (or which the poet feels most drawn to). But the fact that people are purposefully trying to write a type of poem designed only to get the most ‘likes’ skeeves me out.
**Okay, look, I have friends who write poems to upload to Instagram or make videos to share on TikTok and the like, who are really great at it. I’ve also seen stuff made by complete strangers on those platforms that is really excellent. My opposition to that type of stuff is not that I don’t think there’s anything of value (meaning: artistic and intellectual and like, humanistic value; not monetary value) that can be done with it. My opposition is to the commodification of everything, how we’re all supposed to have our personal Brand, we’re supposed to be a brand, and we’re supposed to be generating constant “content.” I don’t want to create content, I want to make art. In the immortal words of Lloyd Dobbler, I don’t want to buy anything, sell anything, or process anything as a career—that includes myself—and oh yeah, capitalism is the enemy of poetry. The other half of the reason I won’t join TikTok is cuz I resist trends. Hell, I still use Tumblr as my primary “social media” account. (And every seven days, I toggle the switch and turn off Tumblr Live.)
***Jim Jarmusch went to school to study poetry, then became a filmmaker; I went to school to study film, then became a poet. This is a minor coincidence which means nothing, but I still think it’s kinda interesting. (Oh! And! While writing this chapter, I came across this line in Ann Lauterbach’s poem “The Blue Door:” I was once at the Stray Dog Cabaret, once in / unlit neighborhoods where sexy initiatives / were underway, awaiting Jim Jarmusch.)
****If you’re using photos, visual art, video clips, or music by someone else, obviously you can collaborate with someone you know—which would be awesome! But there’s also a wealth of Creative Commons/Public Domain stuff online. I’ll be providing links to some of it.
*****Oh Lord, there’s that damn word again.
(This exercise is from my ebook of NaPoWriMo prompts, which can be found here.)

Sorry guys! I really was trying to post one of these each day. That’s real life I guess. I may try to get the other ones later, but we’ll see. I did not get to finish this one...or even really get to the Bagginshield part, but oh well. 😅
Masterlist for these drabbles here. Check out the original post/prompt list. And feel free to send me requests if there are any specific combinations/pairings you want to see.
Secret Royal (Modern Middle Earth) + Interpreter + "I never meant to come between the two of you." + Fili & Kili & Bilbo Friendship (eventually 😆)
Italics indicate speech in Khuzdul.
When Bilbo made the decision to learn as many languages as he could get his hands on…this wasn’t what he had in mind. He had visualized himself translating poetry from Sindrian, or sitting in Free Peoples’ meetings whispering in the ear of an esteemed diplomat. Sitting in a high school class interpreting two teenage boys’ khuzdul was almost joke worthy.
To be fair, he could see why the teachers were at their wits ends. Arda Prep was one of the best private schools in the country, but khuzdul was a hard language, and you had to get permission from the Dwarven High Council to even be allowed to learn it! Luckily, Bilbo’s godfather was in good enough standing with Erebor for the king to speak on his behalf. So there wasn’t a single teacher who spoke it at the school, hence why they called in an interpreter. Well, that…and Fili and Kili were meances.
Bilbo was almost a hundred percent certain they actually could speak flawless Westron. They seemed to delight in pretending they didn't understand to get out of doing any work, and then spent the rest of the class devising new ways to entertain themselves. In a single day, Bilbo had sat through four paper football tournaments where the paper wads were the size of someone’s head, two almost fires, a food fight, and an incident involving getting the three largest boys at the school to almost squash Bilbo flat. Needless to say, he was about as done with them as they were with him. And the worst part was every time they did something, the teacher glared at Bilbo. As if he was there to be a babysitter. Bilbo’s temper was shot.
“This is a complete waste of time.” He grumbled as they walked to the limo waiting to pick Fili and Kili up.
“Now you understand how we feel.” Fili smirked.
“See you tomorrow, Mr. Boggins…or not.” Kili remarked cheerfully enough while rolling his eyes with his brother.
Bilbo was absolutely fuming now. He would not under any circumstances go through this again. His cell phone was in his hand and Gandalf’s number dialed before the boys’ ride even left the parking lot.
“I’m done. Quit. Will not be doing this again, thank you very much.”
“Bilbo, my dear hobbit, that doesn’t sound like you.”
“They’re a bloody nightmare, Gandalf! If I was allowed to call their guardian, I would be giving him a piece of my mind, but I keep getting his PA saying he’s ‘not available’. Just who does he think he is?! Hiring me for a job he probably knows is impossible, and then refusing to hear my complaints.”
“Thorin is a very busy individual. Don’t forget, I recommended you for the position out of respect for both of you.”
“I don’t feel very respected, Gandalf. And if Thorin is going to put up with these kinds of attitudes from his charges, then he very well can deal with them himself.”
Gandalf gave a long pause before finally speaking again. “There is political unrest in Erebor right now. Thorin had to leave with his sister and nephews in tow. The boys’ father along with Thorin and Dis’ brother were left behind. I’m not trying to excuse their actions, but you of all people know how ‘unruly’ grief makes teenagers.”
Bilbo heaved a deep sigh. Yes, ‘Madcap’ Baggins and his adventurous streak was how his own secondary teachers described his rebellious behavior to Gandalf after his parents died in a car wreck. He knew very well what that felt like.
“I know it’s not ideal. But you are the perfect hobbit for the job. If anyone can handle those boys, it’s you.”
The next day, Bilbo wasn’t going to put up with his wards' antics any longer. As soon as they sat down to start their first class of the day, he made sure to spin this in his favor.
“Kili knows the answer.” Bilbo stated as soon as the teacher started to look for a raised hand to call on.
“No, I don’t.” The dark haired boy scolded the interpreter with flushed cheeks.
Fili smacked Kili on the arm, as Bilbo smirked at their mistake.
“Answer her.” He demanded.
“No.”
“Yes.”
“Make me!”
“I’m going to count to three.” Bilbo warned.
“I DON’T WANT TO ANSWER!”
The class including the teacher dropped their jaws at Kili’s perfect Westron. He looked mortified, while Fili found his feet glaring Bilbo down.
“You’ve messed up, Nanny. I’m calling our uncle, and he won’t be happy to hear about this.”
With that, the blonde got up and left the room, Kili running after him. Bilbo cleared his throat uncomfortably in the wake of their absence.
“I apologize. I never meant to come between the two of you…that is to say your lesson. I never meant to come between…please excuse me.”
Making his exit, Bilbo began to search the hallways for the brothers coming up short. That is until he turned a corner, nearly colliding into a row of dwarves in dark suits and sunglasses. From their center emerged a tall, dark haired dwarf with a furious, yet controlled expression.
“You must be Uncle Thorin.” Bilbo hummed.
“So this is the hobbit my father deemed worthy…and that delights in humiliating my nephews.” He grinned with no warmth whatsoever. “Tell me Mr. Baggins, do you usually make a habit of insulting your clients or do you make special exceptions for royalty?”
Bilbo’s world felt like it was tilting out from underneath him. What?!

Hello, friends!
I'm Nina (she/they, 30s+) 💕
Welcome to my Tumblr — a personal blog where I discuss writing (mostly fic writing), fandom, creativity, and (every once in a while) my thoughts on building equity within and through creative spaces.
Tumblr media
about me:
I write fics under the AO3 pseud sinigangsta. While I primarily write eremika, I am multiship and multifandom: I am really open to any ship/fandom/situation if I feel like there's a compelling enough story there.
My "real life" includes motherhood, running a family, and antiracism/social justice activism.
---
about this blog:
You can find:
My creative writing: mostly fic-related (excerpts, WIPs, abandoned fics, self-promo for my fics posted elsewhere); however, I will also share non-fandom-related microstories, drabbles, some poetry, prompt fills, free-writing exercises, and the occasional insights into my original works
Other personal writing: notes, reflections, my weekly Thursday Thoughts posts on my life and writing journey
Inspiration: written (lots of inspirational quotes!) and visual, particularly photography, general aesthetics, and fan art
An open ask box: send me your questions and asks! I welcome recommendations; questions about me, my writing, or my headcanons; even any fic ideas that you have (I may do something with them or I may not — just know I welcome creative collaboration here).
*GENERAL CONTENT WARNING* potential dark/problematic content. While this isn’t an exclusively dark/NSFW blog, I do sometimes explore dark themes in my writing. I commit to tagging and providing appropriate content warnings.

What are you most excited to see animated for bleach if you are watching it when it comes back that is ?
I will absolutely watch it! I think the thing I'm most excited for is:
the new visual style
seeing Orihime again. I miss her!
I'm looking forward to having all the Sternritter introduced to me in a format that I find easier to consume (the manga was a difficult slog for me during the TYBW arc).
Byakuya v. As Nodt
The battle of the Kenpachis
RETURN OF AIZEN
I'm sure there are a million other... OH WAIT! THE NUMBER ONE THING I WANT TO SEE IS ORIHIME AND CHAD IN HUECO MUNDO CHILLIN' WITH THE ARRANCAR HOMIES AND GRIMMJOW COMING OUT WITH THE DRIP!

My #1 post of 2022
What do you love most about the UH ship? 🥰
This is such a hard question. There are so many things to love. The aesthetic. The poetry. The growth. The angst. The sweet sadness.
But I think my most loved part about the UH ship is the hope. Hope that a monster born of nothingness can be redeemed. Hope that a girl who dared to love everyone despite having love constantly ripped away from her can find it reflected back to her in the eyes of another who had previously seemed incapable. Hope that despite the deepest, most seemingly insurmountable divides, true connection between souls can be made.
Ulquiorra offered Orihime the hope that she could make a difference; to be the change she wanted to see. That her being exactly who she is was enough to make all the difference in the world; that she was significant. Orihime offered Ulquiorra hope that despite himself, there is something real about the intangible bonds between people, and that even a wretched void like him could feel the warmth of a compassionate soul, that he might be mourned, and that he could find someone to leave his heart with; someone who cared enough to reach back.

Thank you for taking my ask seriously, and I'm sorry if I came across confrontational. This is a bit of an emotional subject for me so it's hard to explain what I mean. I don't think you came across as mean or rude.
Do you really believe that making AI art can never be a creative process? I'm sorry if again this comes across aggressive, like you said tone is hard. But if someone spent hours trying different prompts, tweaking the phrasing until they got an image that communicated an idea they wanted to communicate… isn't that a contemplative, creative process? Isn't that art?
To be blunt, I'm not a creative person. I have tried to change and learn but I'm not an artist and I've never made anything that has had any value, to me or to others. When I say it's accessible, I mean that someone like me could use it to make something meaningful, which would otherwise not be possible. Why is it that when people try to make technical fields more accessible, it's about introducing tools that let you produce good results with less skill, but the most I've seen in creative fields is people pushing for bad results to be accepted? Is it wrong for me to want good results?
I'm sympathetic about artists losing their livelihood, but I don't think that's a good argument against it. When the sewing machine was invented, lots of people who would have made a living sewing would have lost their livelihood, but that doesn't mean the invention of the sewing machine was bad.
This is a bit of a fraught discussion so I'll understand if you need to stop at any time. I really want to come to an understanding but it's hard for me not to feel like this is a new tool that can produce good results without years and years of experience being dismissed out of hand by… people who have years and years of experience. Maybe there's just some fundamental gap that in experience and understanding that I can't cross because I'm not an artists?
Of course, it's a serious topic to me! And an important conversation to have since ai is becoming more prevalent.
Creative processes doesn't exactly equal art, or visual art, for example I like to be creative when coordinating my outfits but my outfits are not art. (I've sewn some of my own garments that I designed- though they were more for function than art so I still wouldn't count them. There's a fuzzy line that devides design and art I feel)
Referencing the article about the winning ai work again, the creator sees himself more of an author than an artist. Creative writing can be art (like poetry for example) but it's just not the same as visual art. So in my opinion it's not art. Typing keywords into a ai generator no matter how specific is not art. As they article also said, the creator likened it to a word game.
Why is it not possible for you to make something meaningful on your own? Why do you believe you've made nothing of value? Why do you need the ai generator to do it for you? Do you mean you can't create your own images, because you don't like your drawings?
The reality is that art is a skill, communication is a skill. There are so many things I, as an artist, want to say with my art. And want to depict in my art. But i "cant" because of my lack of ability. So I work to get better, so I can say more and how more, and be concise or as vague as I want in my pieces effectively. This is the reality. And there are people who have improved way more in just a few years than I have over most of my life. That's the reality. Doesn't mean my work is worth any less.
What are the bad results you are talking about? Ugly art? Like the art community is pushing for bad results... so ugly art? And the good results are the ai generated images? You can want those "good results" but they ultimately aren't yours. Again, please don't take this as mean or an attack but it's not your art. A computer program made it for you. Artists are pushing for these bad results, which I am assuming again is bad art, because bad art that you've made with your own hands and heart is worth infinity more than an image generated by a soulless computer (made for you. Not by you.) Because art is about connection too. It's complicated of course, I'm sure other artists will say different things, but this is my opinion. If you don't understand why art made by people has value and that a pretty image made by a computer (guided or not) does not have that value, I'm not sure I can.
The sewing machine is a tool. You still need design the garments, construct them yourself, physically sew the seams with the machine. It just makes it faster, and easier on the hands. I think that a sewing machine is comparable to a drawing tablet, it's a tool that can help the process but everything else is made by the artist. This is so different than ai generated images from keywords. I'm not entirely sure, again, how to explain this difference either..
Again, I don't mean to offend or anything. I don't think it's about experience as an artist, rather how you view art. Art isn't just pretty pictures. If you view artists work as such then I understand not seeing the difference.
Sorry if my response is messy or if I missed something, I don't mind having the conversation but I didn't know when I'd get the chance to reply later today (and I had to type this a little quickly;;;) I don't mean to be dismissive or anything!!!
Edit because I forgot something important, if making ai art gives you a feeling of creative accomplishment and an outlet, nobody can take that away from you, and I don't mean to either. If this is important to you, you should do it! I just feel it doesn't belong in spaces with paintings, illustrations, etc because it's just not the same. I don't think that's elitist of me, they just aren't the same thing and shouldn't be treated as such. Again, I hope I didn't come off as mean at all.

👀 + "I think about fucking you a lot. I know, that's the least romantic thing I could say, but, y'know... I'm still me, so you'll let it slide this once, right? I'll even whisper it in your year, every filthy thing I wanna do to you, while I drag my fingers along every curve of your body and my lips behind them, nip and nibble where I please until you're quivering and oh so tired of it. I wanna make you mad, make you lash out, make you demand and demand and demand that I drop to my knees and worship you properly, as you deserve to be, grab a fistful of my hair and sigh my name the very second I take you into my mouth. I wanna slide my hands around your hips and keep you anchored in place as I tease you, lick and suckle on you; I want you to moan and cry out my name, I want to swallow you-- And again I want to visit you in your dreams, all awash in ashen skin, another me to join the fray. Dig my fingers in, spread you open, and eat, ease my fingers in one by one...slow, gentle, torturously sweet - you'll need to be ready, swee'heart, to take two of me. Oh, to be inside you, so much of me inside you-- So full o' me and only me, over and over and over again till ya can't breathe and your mind is elsewhere, so tired, so blissful... I want to make you cum. Is that so wrong? I wish I had more poetry for you, but you'll settle for the love in my lust, won't you? You'll still moan my name when I press into that sensitive little spot inside you, right? Don't lie, baby, I'll knoow~"
prompt
It took seven words for V's heart to seize, his pupils to dilate and his modesty to make him turn rosy at the start of Garrett's soliloquy. And it didn't take long at all for it to get worse, a confession of indecent thoughts and desires and needs spilling over and catching V like high tide, with every intention of pulling him into the surf where Garrett would make those thoughts, desires and needs come to fruition. Indeed, the man had pulled him in, only it was his arms that gathered round him and his mouth that whispered deeply, softly, hotly in his ear. Fingers danced along his spine, feather-light touches intentional in their teasing. He was fully dressed, but Garrett touched him like he wasn't. It startled him, at least some of it did: He wants me mad? Lashing out?!
Spindly hands grabbed at Garrett's shoulders when V realized the wish to make him quiver right then and standing there wasn't only a wish. Was he going to make V make him drop to his knees right now?
Oh, but it was too easy to visualize every touch, every action, and the sensations that spawned from them. It was enough to make the warlock just a little foggy in the brain, thinking about those fingers and that mouth, invasive but soft, warm, squirming and wriggling and pressing and squelching—
V had to bring his head down, perhaps just a little overwhelmed by the images assaulting his mind. The incubus in his dreams, two of them, their hands all over and he in the middle, sweating it out and losing his mind between them; trembling limbs and shaky whimpers, tears pricking his eyes, defeated moans spilling over his wet lips—the idea of fullness, of so much Garrett that it robs him of breath and sense and, maybe, even the will to live. He never did think he was strong enough for a demon, but his mate faithfully made certain he survived when the waves descended and he, bruised and breathless, emerged from the foam drenched, but fulfilled and renewed. Beneath longer lashes, his cheeks were warm.
Over and over and over.
Till he couldn't breathe, hm?
V felt his grip tighten, he felt himself clench from nothing more than the idea of that sensitive little spot— But he tried to ignore the electricity Garrett was making him contend with now, through nothing more than a whispering of obscenities with an expert tongue, hushed tones, warm breath, and explorative touches that went farther than his back. V liked to think he was stronger than the way he felt now, and he tried to be. He was. He was? "Y-you think about this...often?" It didn't surprise him, it shouldn't, to hear all of this from Garrett, to be reminded that he was so physical; he freely admitted to being lustful, and he was shameless, shameless, oh-so shameless about the whole thing. And he knew what it did to V. He knew exactly what it did to him. He nestled his face along Garrett's neck, hiding the way an ostrich digs its head in the sand. "...Of course you do."
Oh, Garrett needn't be romantic at all. It was enough that he admitted this much; none of it new, but thoughts given voice all the same. It took a brand of courage to do that, and V admired (was even amazed by) Garrett for having it in spades. He could never say such things! Wondering how he could reciprocate— Oh, it made him flush with embarrassment just from mentally putting together the words! He could never say such things, but he supposed his gooseflesh and present malleability spoke plenty for him. Honestly, nothing he'd heard put him off, disappointed or disgusted him. Quite the absolute contrary: in his husband's arms, at the mercy of his ravenous attentions, being touched and teased and prodded and squeezed, he thought he'd allow himself to buckle, have that demon follow through, right from the beginning. Or, maybe, to have himself lulled to sleep so the dream Garrett promised could take form and take hold.
So full of you and only you... But what could be more romantic? V turned his head to peck Garrett's neck, a subtle but clear welcome. An invitation, too.
Let it slide? Darling, V could only stand to hear more.

I literally just got up and marked down the poetry comp deadline on one of my whiteboards, as well as a personal deadline for my soft launch of WLMM (so I needa get working of reformatting that website ASAP).
I also made a note of target points for social media engagement and promo for the official launch as well as discount offers I'll be rolling out through January (onboarding and retention my guys - who wouldn't want a three month discount for mental wellness consulting with a free introductory session waaaaahhhhh. And tbh my fees are gonna be low af anyway so with the discount it's like... your def getting more bang for your buck yo. But I digress)
I also made a note on my other whiteboard of an upcoming medical appointment (which I almost panicked and thought I'd missed coz I remember it's this month but WHEN). Fortunately I still have time but I did pick up on a vital piece of info I hadn't noticed before so that's dope (seriously, how is an opthalmology appt being done over the phone ITS FOR MY EYES PEOPLE I been waiting years).
Anyhoooo
I know it's just listing things in coloured markers on whiteboards but (esp with adhd) visual prompts are key and mayne...
If y'all could see the energy I approached that task with. No hesitation. Genuine enthusiasm. And actually FOR THE FIRST TIME IN A DAMN LONG TIME believing ima do these things!! That it's not hurt a hope but like... yeah. Ima do that. That's me. I literally have got this in the bag.
Finally, I do know I want two magpies for my logo icon [alternate to the standard long form text name of my business] to go along with it also. And I have some kind of idea as to the positioning of the birds I want. Have not yet decided on the style. Or amount of colour. Or who tfuck is gonna do it coz my graphic designer friend is not able 😫
I have decided to omit the icon for now and stick to the text. Its clean. It's simple. It's a good launch. And it gives me time to play with iconography and really get something I like rather than settling on some rush job.
It def takes an element of pressure off.
Hennywaaaayyyy. I'm sure it's clear as day that my brain is ON.
I cannot describe the fricken HIGH of having a brain that refuses to activate when you need and will it to only to have it come on all lights flashing absolutely raring to go when it finally receives the right stimuli/trigger
Wowow
I knew I would get here but its so relieving to fucken FEEL it coz I know but like... did I?? Ykno
If you stayed with me through this, you're a trooper 😉

Designing A Start
“...designers tend to expect the rest of the world to be as visually sophisticated as they are, and [are] disappointed when they aren’t.” ~ Michael Bierut
As a person oriented around the world of Literature and Art, the tiniest details in everyday life can sprout and bud into multiple, different meanings that can be reproduced into various, colorful perceptions.
Fine Arts has always been a point of reference in how my life is dictated and influenced. From the very beginning, my fascination for artistic media operated and stemmed from my first cognitive encounter with the medium—movies. The very first movie I watched was “How To Train Your Dragon” and from the year 2010, the year when I was simply five, I would continue to draw the movie’s main dragon, Toothless the Night Fury, until late in my ninth-grade year; when I was asked by an exasperated peer if he was all I drew.
As disheartening as the moment initially was, It was a sobering wake-up call that eventually proved beneficial for my overall pursuit in the medium. My perception of the world tends to clash with my peers and the people who do not harbor this fixation with me. I can go on and on about the beautiful dragon concepts and designs from “How To Train Your Dragon” or the world and dialogue from “Wings Of Fire,” a book I adored; but the intensity of my passion can be intimidating and I find it rare that people nurture the same fire as I do, leaving me feeling dejected and isolated sometimes.
As previously stated, this reality is disappointing but I have grown to learn with the world, and for it, I’m grateful as the recent years have pushed me to brave new components of Fine Arts, such as poetry, storyboarding, animation,—but most importantly, Graphic Design.
My interest in Graphic Design ironically started in ninth grade, the same year I was forced to reevaluate my use of art and drawing. My High School had a Design program where I became accustomed to Photoshop, Illustrator, and Indesign—predominantly the former. It wasn’t until eleventh grade that I was pushed further out of my comfort zone and learned to work more intimately with Illustrator, where I made my first logo for the school’s club.
Moving states between High School left a brief interlude with Adobe and after a year gap of getting accustomed to Procreate, I was suddenly thrust back into the arms of Photoshop for my first semester in College, where I additionally had to face an unexpected encounter with AI.
For my first lesson in “Design Technology and Concepts,” I was not expecting to run into Artificial Intelligence so soon. With the subject being so controversial, I had my reservations about the program, Craiyon, an AI art generator. The accessibility to technology brings the risk of designers being devalued as clients expect “that technology should make everything very inexpensive,” as stated by Lynda Decker, a New York City–based graphic designer, in “Becoming A Graphic & Digital Designer.” Like many people in the industry, I suppose I find myself threatened by the possible adverse advancements that come with the development of AI in business, leading to an almost possessive territorial feeling.
Craiyon generates multiple artificial pieces in relation to prompts users input into the generator tab where, with just one click of a button, art is made. For my first project in my design class, we were originally tasked with creating two “Six Word Memoirs'' that represent us as people. With a preexisting interest in poetry, I was content with the direction of turning those memoirs into poems and going from there. The tricky part presented itself when it came time to actually play with Craiyon. Ai, in itself, is a fascinating advancement that can be incredibly useful and engaging but ultimately every pro has its cons. I found the first setback when casually typing my first poem as my prompt:
“Existing here, existing there, existing nowhere.”
The results were unique but not quite what I desired. The nine images generated were mostly bright-colored eye candy that was striking to see as thumbnails, but when enlarged, the details were stripped of their quality.
Out of the first nine images on screen, this one stood out to me the most. While, yes, it remained brighter in saturation, the image was ultimately different from the rest as it maintained a type of simplicity and uniqueness that stood out to me. I was fairly curious about the design but when compared to its larger size, a lot was left to be desired. The picture itself was transformed into a blurry mess with the expanded details losing their appealing touch. It was as if the ophthalmologist had sat me down in a chair and changed my lens in the ophthalmoscope.
This odd feature remained apparent for all generations and no matter how many upscales executed, the image was still lacking the quality expressed in its smaller scale. Resolution is a big deal for me as I am picky and if things don’t look right, I get caught up on those smaller things. With no immediate solution in mind, I had to cut my losses and resign myself to the quality the app had to offer.
I found Craiyon to be sensitive in other areas as well, as the program is very picky just like me. To get the best results, prompts must be detailed and complex. If you want something similar to paint strokes, the program won’t let you get away with simply stating “Make something about existence using paint strokes.” It will be more beneficial to get descriptive, distinguishing what kind of paint strokes: watercolors, oils, gouache, etc.
It was even more frustrating when I found myself constantly having to rewrite my prompts as each image took at least one minute to finally generate. Waiting sixty seconds for each prompt grows tedious when your prompt is one word away from potentially being the image you want. As Lynda stated, “Technology fabricates; it facilitates, but it is not a substitute for ideation and creativity. While I spent the majority of time scrolling through images I liked, a great deal of effort and care had to be placed into the generator to find the piece I liked. Without the person, AI art can’t function, and even when it does, problems continue to arise.
My second image was a fine treasure that, while wasn’t what I was necessarily looking for, came as a pleasant surprise nonetheless. And like all treasure, it was incredibly taxing to find. I didn’t know exactly what I was looking for but I knew what I wanted: a piece that was unique and engaging with a style similar to the outgoing duology of “Into The Spiderverse” and “Across The Spiderverse.”
Both movies physically wowed me and have held a tight influence ever since 2018. The “Spiderverse” movies were a spectacle that sweat and bled passion, and I wanted that message—that feeling—to transfer into my image from my poem. However, with “Spiderverse” being so unique and ambitious, putting each frame and the individual essence they all had into words was beyond a charged task for me.
Luckily Craiyon has it so that users can view and copy similar images generated by other people, tacking on the specific prompt that the images were generated from. One of my alternatives was something of a physical painting, where the prompt had “oil paint knife strokes.” The colors were a mix of blues, golds, and brunos. While interesting, the colors didn’t match the feeling I wanted but the description intrigued me and I decided to incorporate the words into my prompt.
My poems go hand in hand with one another, basically describing the same thing with a different connotation—just things spun a little differently. The core concept was to depict the grief and turmoil that comes with daydreaming, existing in reality while existing in fantasy, a consistent problem I’ve struggled to cope with. What initially started with swarms of gummy and sugary-looking visuals soon warped into something less conceptual and more loose and abstract.
Tumblr media
I like the implications of the image. The splatters gave a sense of disarray and the darker colors provided an interesting contrast to the original image I chose for my first poem. My thoughts can be chaotic and jumbled on most days, and while I tend to find my mind occupied by various art and their scenarios, indulging in the media relaxes me. Drawing, painting, writing, etc. When I’m in the zone, the world falls silent and I am at my most content state.
The picture may seem gloomy but I find the lack of vibrancy to give a cool, calming feel as it's easier on the eyes. I can see how the image could be creepy or intimidating, just like art, but I’m not overwhelmed by it and I find myself just sitting down to marvel at it like I would a piece in a sketchbook. And I decided the image would do and I matched it with my poem.
“The Paint Heals, The Sketchbook Runs.”
Finding the right Typography for both poems was a more pleasurable endeavor as I had already been familiar with Photoshop’s plethora of fonts. I enjoy looking through all the options and exploring the different fonts.  Each font is unique in its own way and I had ideas on how I wanted both Memoirs to go.
With the first image, I wanted to make the most of the colors. Depicting the process of daydreaming with a lighter tone since the colors were more vibrant. I liked the idea of maintaining an inconsistent pattern to match the way my brain inconsistently works.
Tumblr media
A few complications sprung up when trying to connect the colors to the palette presented in the original image. With the resolution being of lower quality, trying to decipher the more optimal color between the yellow of the upper left image and the red to match the blurry outline of the said corner was fairly challenging.
I found myself getting frustrated with the quality once more. Eventually, I settled myself with the idea that the image wasn’t going to be perfect once more and kept the top left color yellow.
With the second image’s Typography, I was interested in finding a font that matched the paint textures. Unfortunately, the fonts available didn’t have the runny, drip-like streaks I wanted. Things also grew more complicated as I liked the idea of having the second image’s text correlate to the colors given by the image.
By scrolling down Photoshop’s given font options, I narrowed down the fonts I liked, working around the indecisiveness by determining what I thought looked best when the text was white. It was harder utilizing the other colors like black, garnet, and deep teals because the lower tones made it harder to read. However, I was adamant about keeping at least one word of the memoir a different color and I felt it would be clever to make the last word of the poem another color to put more emphasis on it.
This was a complicated task because no matter what color was picked, the result was either hard to read or the text looked out of place. Black made it unintelligible as well as the teals, and when I finally decided to give the little splatters of Goldenrod yellow a try, I thought the result looked atrocious.
I was more receptive to the garnet but picking the darker shade of red still left it hard to read and lightening the color only made the text seem inappropriate. Frustrated, I decided to duplicate the text, recolor the bottom layer black, and add an effect to make a subtle outline when I moved its position below the red text. It wasn’t perfect but I left it as was, mildly questioning for the piece’s legibility.
Tumblr media
During the presentation, my concerns were proven legitimate as many classmates informed me the red text made the word, “runs,” hard to see. One peer said they didn’t even recognize the word was present until I actually read my poem out loud.
I was given many pointers to potentially point me in the right direction. Someone suggested I could make the word black and emphasize the text with a red outline or vice versa. I was suggested to try out teal again and experiment with the shading and placement of the text on the image. All in all, I found everyone’s advice informative and helpful, even little details such as my peers informing me what they thought worked.
As an aspiring Graphic Designer, I’d say it helped me understand why reflection and communication are so important in the profession. Everyone’s opinions matter as they influence each other in the future.

When I was younger I didn’t really understand like “band loyalty” with music tastes, when you listen to one artist’s stuff. I kinda get it now. A musician makes a piece you like, so you seek out other pieces because you’ll like those too. I get that now. Because I like specific YouTubers, and I’ve always been like that. But that’s audio and visual. Music is just audio. It’s just lyrics with a musical backdrop.
Music gives you this unique experience you get when you read poetry, except you have accompanying instrumentals to set the mood and tone. To me, music is just poetry. And you don’t get pictures with poetry, you have to make the pictures in your head. The same is true with music. You hear words to a story, feel the emotions and progression, and you experience that music with a little piece of yourself. That’s what art does it’s a communication from the artist to the audience. Music is just like a medium for storytelling.
But I also think music is like a prompt generator. Art is created out of this universal experience of being alive. So all art will inspire or spark something within you that you can resonate with. The stories music tells are all self contained, but they can inspire new ones based on your own interests and experiences. Oftentimes the music I listen to either a. Has a good story b. Resonates on some level(aka I like how it sounds) or c. Correlates in some way to a story or character I already have in my head. So just because some musician that made a song I liked made another one that doesn’t mean I’d personally like it.
But I’ve seen people be like “man, I’m a huge fan of X band.” And I don’t really get it. Which also makes it hard to say what I like. I guess I could say I like listening to game soundtracks, EDM and rock, but being suggested something in that category doesn’t mean I’d like it. But I often hear stuff like “oh if you like X, then you gotta check out Y!” But the idea of purposefully seeking out new music specifically is strange to me. It kinda just accumulates for me. I come across a song in a video, or in a store, or in a game or show, listen to it on loop for about a hundred times, put it in my playlist and move on. The idea of listening to an artist to see if you like something just sounds exhausting and time consuming. There’s music everywhere, just listen while you’re about your day and you’ll find some new music eventually.
Something in particular about “band loyalty” I especially don’t like is when people claim that they were fans of a band before they were popular. Like in the comment section of a lyric/music video of a popular sound bite, and be like “if you were here before TikTok then you have good tastes.” What is deal with this pointless gatekeeping? Shouldn’t you be happy that your band/musician is getting attention? Why does it matter if I discovered this sound off of an fan edit or a sound bite or an animatic?
It reminds me of the other day I was playing some music in the car with my mom and she asked “where did you hear this?” I was just shocked by the question itself. What do you mean where? There music literally everywhere. In stores, in restaurants, on radio, in movies, in media in general. Hell, just walk into the middle of an open field and there will be sound. Asking how I accumulate music is like asking me where I like to pick up the air I like to breathe. Like, it’s everywhere??? The answer to the question was the radio at the store I work at, but I don’t really see how that mattered. If I told you I first heard it at restaurant would your enjoyment decrease? Why does it matter if I heard it from a TikTok trend?
I dunno if this a common experience or not, since I don’t hear people talk about this. I’ve never been particularly attached to “mainstream media” so yeah. I’m writing this in case someone does experience music in a similar way so maybe they can feel a little bit more seen. And if you do: hello! I guess we can know that we vibe together!

Hi hazel!! I’d love to know the answers to 2, 12, 30, and 39 for the fic asks! 💜
hi amanda! thanks for stopping by!
2. Where do you get your fic ideas? everywhere! anywhere!  they don’t come from one particular place. i can get inspired by movies, tv shows, songs, books, singular lines of poetry, canon events, events or moments that have happened to me, etc.  i would say that the one thing i don’t usually get inspiration from directly is visual things, because i’m not necessarily a visual reader so i don’t always picture things distinctly when i write. so i probably won’t get inspiration from a photograph or a visual scene, although although i have before and i can get inspiration from the way it makes me feel
12. Do you outline your fics?  If yes, how detailed are your outlines?  How far do you stray from them? I do not usually outline!  I keep it all in my head.  There’s a lot going on up there.  I have an in-progress outline for unmute because i need things to line up with real events and i can’t keep the real timeline straight in my head, and i have an outline for my nano project (although it’s less than halfway done and i’m coming up on the end of the outline really quick, yikes!), then i’ll probably kind of outline (mostly just make notes) for two more bigger projects if i actually get around to writing them.  my outlines are basically a list of scenes, with a few random notes at the beginning or end (example: the first page of my unmute notes doc has a quote that inspired it, a song that inspired it, an example of how i formatted texting in the fic, a list of flaws of luke and ashton in the fic, some links to timelines, the sentence  When Luke was three years old, he would pray to his drapes so they wouldn’t scare him :), and a note to myself to put a pit-stop warning after chapter 6.  the rest of it is just bullet points of events that happened in each year (both in canon and fictional story points)).  i would say that i stray a decent amount.  i have completely changed significant parts of my nano project. for unmute, i mostly tend to add scenes in between rather than change big things.
30. How much do you edit your fics?  Do you edit as you write or wait until you finish the first draft? how much I edit depends on how much i care about the fic and how difficult it was to write.  for ask box prompts, i just give it a quick read-through and tweak things here and there as i go.  for other fics, i’ll probably read through it more than once and make bigger adjustments, but it’s usually not too intense because for the most part i like my first drafts and almost never have full sections that i need to fill in, completely change, or move around.  i tend to wait until i finish the first draft to edit, although if i’m rereading to remind myself where i left off/the tone or style of the piece, i’ll tweak things that stand out to me as i’m doing that reread.
39. What’s your most self-indulgent wip? oh that’s one of the ones for my other fandoms lol.  self-indulgent means something that i’m loving while not caring who else will read it, so that’s probably either my caswen frat au (the frat part was a surprise. i just made ej join a frat because i figured he wouldn’t know how to make friends without them being built-in and it actually turned into a whole plot point) or my hawkmetri hanahaki disease au.  the caswen one (ricky/ej from hsmtmts) is self-indulgent because 1. it’s for that pairing, which is self-indulgent in of itself 2. i am talking about a lot of theater stuff 3. lots of snoozing together 4.i really enjoy writing ej’s frat bros 5. ej isn’t smiling.  i’m really into writing fics right now where characters don’t smile, because in all of my 5sos fics people are smiling like crazy they’re just smiley guys. i think i overuse the phrase “he smiles” way too much, so i like when characters are generally unhappy with their lives and therefore not smiling a lot.  the hawkmetri (hawk/demetri from cobra kai) au is self-indulgent because 1. i’m super into cobra kai right now 2. it’s childhood best friends to enemies with a side of unrequited love which is arguably one of the tastiest dynamics in the entire universe 3. i get to write from demetri’s pov which is fun because he’s insufferable but i absolutely love him and his narrative voice is really fun 4. I get to expand on sam and demetri’s friendship a bit 5. hanahaki disease is actually an au that i have endless fascination with because i hate how it kind of puts blame on the other person for not returning the love which is dumb because people can’t control who they love and it doesn’t factor in platonic love either, so i like tweaking it to make it more swallowable for me, but i also love the flower symbolism and the angst of it and for these two????? it’s just too perfect.  i have big plans.  i wrote the first 3k of it in one sitting, which is basically unheard of for me.
yeah. those are my most self-indulgent wips right now.  i wouldn’t say that any of my 5sos ones are overly self-indulgent right now because i am always thinking of The Audience with those right now, but with those two fics i’m just going wild for the fun of it

thoughts on evil Forrest 😈
We are going to start out by apologizing. This is very very late. I’m sure when you sent this ask, you meant it to be in the same joking tone that I approach all of my other propaganda posts. Sadly, this is actually going to be a deep dive into a few Evil Forrest related things, including the moment I feel they changed directions, the perfect wasted build-up, and the implications of the change/how it then negatively impacted the story. As I’m sure you already know, by being on my blog at all, I don’t think the story was good to begin with, so we are going to focus on the weird hoops they made themselves jump through to make that story still work. Additionally, I am only going to mention once, right now, how much of a waste it was to not have Forrest ‘fall for his mark’ and complete one of my absolute favorite tropes. Honestly, I think “because I want it” is a completely valid reason to like Evil Forrest. But, the question was “Thoughts on Evil Forrest” and these thoughts have been developing for over a year and a half. So, I apologize in advance.
The majority of this is under a cut, with highlights in the abstract. If no one wants to read this, I understand completely. Go ahead, skip it.
Note: it pains me greatly to not actually have full sources for this essay. Just know that in my heart I am using proper APA citations, I just absolutely do not feel like digging through tweets to find sources to properly cite.
Abstract:
Previous research indicates that Roswell New Mexico has a history of repeating excuses to explain mid-season changes to plots. This essay explores how those excuses are not only loads of crap, but how they hinder the show’s ability to tell a coherent story, misuse the multiple-plot structure to enhance the themes being explored, and lead to decisions that mean the show continuously goes over budget. This also means that characters are not used to their full potential and has led to what some fans consider to be “out of character” behaviors. While these behaviors are not universally agreed on, evidence can be shown that these behaviors directly contradict emotionally important character arc/plot points in the show.
The author of this paper acknowledges that the show took some strides to mend this problem. However, once again no consensus could be found on whether Forrest was a low-level member of Deep Sky and thus just allowed to fuck off on a bus, or his job was recruitment because he did a piss poor job of making Alex not join.
The concept of Evil Forrest has been with the fandom as early as New York Comic Con (NYCC) in 2019, when it was revealed that Alex had a new “blue-haired love interest”. Speculation abounded within the fandom, with some people, including the author, going “yeah, he’s evil” while others rejoiced in the concept of Alex having a loving partner. Speculation increased as fans discussed Tyler Blackburn’s seeming disinterest in his new love interest, prompting some once again to scream “EVIL” at the top of their lungs to anyone who would listen. Very little was revealed, beyond the fact that the new character would show up somewhere around episode 3 of the second season.
Episode 2.04 aired with some commenting on how he barely interacted with Alex- prompting more evil speculation- and others excited to see the characters interact more. The character appears again in 2.06, where he invites Alex to dubious spoken word poetry (which Alex attends); 2.08, where they have a paintball date and go to The Wild Pony; 2.10, where the two are seen writing together briefly at the beginning of the episode; and 2.13, where Alex performs his song at open mic night, tells Forrest his relationship with the person in the song was long over, and they kiss. Forrest was not revealed to be evil during season 2.
Amidst the season airing, Word of God via Twitter post announced that yes, Forrest had originally been planned as a villain, though not the main villain, but it was changed as filming progressed.
The Word of God Twitter post revealed that Forrest had originally been planned as a villain, but they decided that they could not make their “blue-haired gay man” a villain. This mirrors a similar situation and excuse used the previous season, where the character of Jenna Cameron was originally planned to work with Jesse Manes against the aliens, before it was changed because they just “loved Riley [the actress] too much”. Both of these examples occurred while already filming and reflect on a larger problem with the show. Though not the topic of this essay, it is important to note that both characters are white, both in the show and by virtue of being played by white actors. The fact that they couldn’t be villains for one reason or another is not a courtesy extended to the male villains who are all the most visibly brown, and thus ‘other’, members of the cast.
This also highlights the fact that, via Twitter, it has been revealed two other times that occurrences that were reported in season 1 also occurred in season 2. During the airing of episode 1.02, it was revealed that the single best build-up of tension in the show- when Alex walks to the Airstream not saying a word to Michael after a dramatic declaration- happened because one actor was sick at the time and they had to go back and film the kisses later. At the point of airing for episode 2.08, it was revealed that one of the actors were sick and unable to film a kissing scene. Allegedly, this caused the writers to retool the entire scene and deviate from the plan to make that subplot about Coming Out. The execution of this subplot will be explored later in this essay.
The last occurrence revealed via Twitter also revealed larger issues within the show: lack of planning and poor budgeting. During the airing of season 1, Tyler Blackburn was needed for an extra episode beyond his contracted 10. A full explanation was never given, but speculation about poor planning and to fill in because Heather Hemmens had to miss one of her 10 episodes due to scheduling conflicts for another project. During the airing of season 2, yet another tweet came out saying they made a mistake and Tyler would once again be in an additional episode. No explanations beyond “a mistake” were given, though once again speculation occurred. It is the opinion of the author that this was due to changing plot points over halfway through writing, while episodes were already in production. It has been speculated by some that these changes occurred during the writing of 2.08, which was being finished/pre-production was occurring roughly around the time of NYCC 2019.
Previous Literature:
A brief look at different theories of plots and subplots
Many people have written on the subject of plotting, for novels and screen alike. The author is more familiar with film writing than tv, but a lot of the concepts carry over. Largely, the B- and C- (and D- and E-… etc) plots should reinforce the theme of the A-plot. This can be through the use of a negative example, where the antithesis of the theme is explored to reinforce the theme presented by the A plot, or through other examples of the theme, generally on a small scale.
A movie example of this would be Hidden Figures (2016), where the A-plot explores how race and gender impact the main character (Katherine Johnson) in her new job. The B-plots explore the other characters navigating the same concepts in different settings and ways- learning a new skill as to not become obsolete and breaking boundaries there (Dorothy Vaugn) and being the first black woman to complete a specific degree program and the fight it took to get there (Mary Jackson). A TV example that utilizes this concept of plot and theme is the 911 shows. Each of the rescues in a given episode will directly relate to the overall theme of the episode and the overall plot for the focus character. This example is extremely blunt. It does not use any tools to hide the connection, to the point you can often guess the outcome for that A-plot fairly quickly.
This is not the only way to explore themes within visual media. Moonlight (2016) looks at three timestamps in the life of Chiron. Each timestamp has a plot even if they feel more like individual scenes or moments rather than plots as some are more used to in films. Each time stamp deals with rejection, isolation, connection, and acceptance in different ways. So while there is no clear A-, B-, or C-Plot, each time stamp works as their own A-Plot to explore the themes in a variety of ways, particularly by starting out in a place of rejection and moving to acceptance or a place of connection to isolation.
Please note that there are many ways to write multiple plots, there are just two examples.
While there are flaws within season 1 of RNM, overall the themes stayed consistent throughout the season, mainly the theme of alienation. The theme threads through the Alien’s isolation/alienation from humanity which is particularly seen through Michael’s unwillingness to participate and Isobel’s over participation. There is Rosa’s isolation from others, how her friendship with “Isobel” ended up compounding her existing alienation from her support system due to her mental illness and coping mechanisms. We see how Max and Liz couldn’t make connections. This theme presented itself over and over in season 1. While this essay is not an exploration of the breakdown of themes in season 2, it should be noted that there were some threads that followed throughout the season. The theme of mothers/motherhood was woven throughout season 2, with some elements more effective than others. Please contact the author for additional thoughts on Helena Ortecho and revenge plots.
One of the largest problems within season 2 was the sheer number of plots jammed into the season. These plot threads often ended up hindering the effectiveness of the themes and made the coherence of the season suffer. Additionally, a lot of them were convoluted and difficult to follow.
Thesis:
Essentially, season 2 was a mess. To look at it holistically is almost an exercise in futility. Either you grow angry about the dropped plots and premises, you hand wave them off, or you fill them in for yourself. Instead, this essay proposes to look at individual elements to explain why Forrest should have stayed evil.
We first meet Forrest in 2.04 when he is introduced on the Long Family Farm, which we later learn was the location where our past alien protagonists had their final standoff. He’s introduced. He’s largely just there. The audience learns he has more of a history with Michael. In 2.06, we meet him again with his dog Buffy (note: poor Buffy has not been seen again and we miss a chunky queen). There’s mild flirting, Alex is invited to an open mic night, which he attends. For the purpose of this essay, the author’s thoughts on the poetry will not be expressed. Readers can take a guess.
It is after this point that the author speculates the Decision was made. This choice to make Forrest not evil- paired with the aforementioned ‘can’t kiss, someone’s sick’- impacted the plot. We have Alex have a scene with his father- which the author believes could have been pushed to a different episode- and then have Alex go on a date and then not kiss Forrest at the end of the night. Here, the audience sees Forrest hit Alex in the leg, allegedly not knowing he had lost his leg despite ‘looking him up’, which parallels the shot to the leg that happens to Charlie. Besides wasting this ABSOLUTELY TEXTBOOK SET UP WTF, it also takes Alex away from the main plot and then forces a new plot for him. Up to this point, Alex’s plot was discovering more about the crash and his family’s involvement. Turning Alex’s date from a setup for evil Forrest to a Coming Out story adds yet another plot thread to a packed season. It is also the author’s thought that this is where the convoluted kidnapping plot comes in. With Forrest already in 2.10 for a moment, a plot where Alex is evil has Forrest attack him for Deep Sky rather than Jesse abduct him for a piece of alien glass Alex was going to give him anyway and then for Flint to abduct Alex from Jesse. It’s messy. In a bad way. Evil Forrest would have been a cleaner set up: no taking back a piece of alien glass Alex gave to Michael in a touching moment. No double abduction. Instead, there is only Forrest, who Alex trusts, breaking that trust to take him as leverage over Michael.
Implications:
Now, Alex has two plots (Tripp & Coming Out). The Coming Out plot is largely ineffective, as they are only relevant to scenes with Forrest and have the undercurrent of there only being a certain acceptable way to be out. This could have been used for Alex to discover his comfort levels, mirroring Isobel’s self discovery, but there was not enough screen time for that. Additionally, Isobel’s coming out story was about her allowing herself the freedom to explore. Alex’s story was about the freedom to… act like this dude wanted him to. Alex’s internalized homophobia played out often in the series but it was also informed by the violence he experienced at Jesse’s hands and the literal hate crime he and his high school boyfriend experienced. With that in mind, the “kissing to piss off bigots” line comes off poorly. This is a character who experienced what a pissed off bigot could do- reluctance to kiss in public is not the same as not being out. There is more to be said on this topic, but as it is not actually the focus of the essay, it will be put on hold. To surmise: Alex’s coming out is attempted to be framed as being himself, but it is actually the conformity to someone else’s ideals. It does not work as an antithetical to Isobel’s story, as the framing indicates that the conformity/right was to be out contradicts Isobel’s theme.
