i haven't gotten a philosophy degree yet, so don't trust me too much, but i really wish tma s5 would've discussed the idea that fear needs hope to survive. fear has a very short lifespan when there's no hope. so basically, if the world was truly hopeless, everyone would give up and cease to actually fear the entities, which would leave them with nothing to feed on. in this essay i will,

The Boys #1 notes: page 5
On page 5, Robin is fridged in a particularly gory way when a superhero villain named A-Train (an evil version of the Flash) throws a supervillain in such a way that his body smashes through Robin, completely pulverizing her, on the way to smash into a wall. A-Train doesn't register the civilian casualty and is even rude to Wee Hughie as he passes him to resume the fight. Wee Hughie is left holding Robin's dismembered arms ending in bloody stumps. His horror is the motivation leading him to hate superheroes in their roles as symbols of the corrupt world. It's communist-friendly and also fash-friendly. I'll tell you when we reach something the fash can't use.
The panel depicting the fridging is brutal... but also has a shot of the villain's buttocks and crotch area for a bit of bathroom humor. It is tonally wrong for this part of the plot. Deadpool does something similar in the film intro, where he basically humps the camera while trying to squirm into the taxi passenger seat through the little window.
That works there because it's a small bit of humor in a quiet moment, breaking up the awkward intro, but the scene in The Boys should simply be a moment of horror. Trying to make it funny--especially with something so vulgar--ruins the emotional core. We're supposed to relate to Wee Hughie seeing the depth of corruption in the superhero industrial complex, but our view of him and his situation is rendered unempathetic.
The TV show simplified this scene, made it even gorier, and has much more of an emotional core for removing the supervillain entirely and just making A-Train run through Robin at supersonic speeds. It's in-line with the theme of "What if superheroes were real? What horrible consequences would there be?" by exploring something going awry with a superpower and connects more with the plot as we wonder who A-Train is and where he's going in such a hurry. It's more empathetic by centering the gore and Hughie's reaction as about the horrible loss of human life instead of just superheroes being random assholes.
In the show, A-Train's corruption is handled better because he stops, cognizant of his horrible mistake, mutters, "Can't stop," in an apologetic tone, and then runs off. Later, he doesn't take responsibility and indicates Robin died because of her own carelessness. That is a much better take on corruption. A-Train is corrupt, but he's still a human being and expresses some genuine empathy in the moment. That makes us care about him and realize we could be that guy. He's not just some random asshole we can dehumanize into The Enemy, which is how the comics frame him.
Also, comics A-Train is darker than Wee Hughie and Robin while still somewhat light-skinned. The show translates this as him being black, which is reasonable, but I see a lot of racists online complaining that he was white in the comics. Was he? Ugh. It doesn't matter. It makes sense to have the main cast of a TV show have racial diversity in it regardless of whether the comics do or not. I say the only time it really matters is if the character has a part to play in a racially-charged dynamic and even then can be racebent if the writing is good (like Namor changing from Jewish-coded to Indigenous in Wakanda Forever).
As for the fridging itself, it seems more gratuitous and sexist in the comics because of the surrounding tone. Women aren't characters the reader is supposed to see themselves in or really respect. Robin is just a hot girlfriend for Wee Hughie--reader stand-in--to appreciate, who is immediately killed off and that's that. The show just makes everything more feminist and treats Robin with more respect, even in death. Thank you, Rebecca Sonnenshine.

Die A Hero, Or Live Long Enough To Become The Villain
Anakin Skywalker died on Mustafar.
Darth Vader rises from his ashes. Finished, 7k words.
@angstober
*** ** * ** ***
Padmé was dead.
Padmé was dead, and he was alive.
Alone.
Vader wondered if this was how vines felt, when you removed them from their tree. When they lost everything. He wasn’t really sure how he felt, truthfully.
He just felt numb.

His suit hurt.
His everything hurt.
Burning alive tended to do that to organic beings, he knew. Even monsters.
But his suit also hurt in ways it wasn’t supposed to. He would know. He had tinkered with droids and mechanics for longer than he could remember. The simple fact that his rebuilt right arm was the least painful part of him was proof enough.
The armor was heavy and awkward. The whole system to support his failing lungs was torture. The drugs supposed to reduce his pain didn’t seem to help at all. The control panel displayed on his chest’s whole existence was absurd. At least the metal was black, and the cape acceptable. The whole contraption looked like something to hinder rather than help him, and Vader hated it.
Plus, there was no place in the armor for his recovering wings. They were uncomfortably pressed between two metal plates, whose harsh edges sunk into the fragile skin. Every movement irritated the burned roots. Every movement singed his nerves anew. Every movement was agony.
It empowered the Dark. It made it swirl hungrily around him, eager to eat the next flash of pain. Nowaday the Force felt more like a beast waiting to devour him than a friend and ally.
Vader didn’t care.
All of his friends betrayed him anyway.

ive been thinking a lot about kirnet’s relationships with the jedi masters, especially the way that they change from pre-war to kotor 2. She idolized Kavar, even when she was hurt that he never officially took her on as a padawan. She generally admired zez-kai ell and wished more of the council had his introspection. And Vrook was, well, Vrook. Yes, she had some level of respect for him, but she fundamentally disagreed with him on everything and hated his lack of action during the wars.
But in k2 these just completely flip. She gets along with Kavar just fine, their reunion is more bitter than sweet, but now SHE is the famed Jedi general. SHE is the war hero, not Kavar. She’s just surpassed him in so many ways. I’m pretty sure he has a line about wishing that he trained them as a guardian (or, if they are a guardian, that he was glad they chose that path). But where once Kirnet would have reveled in the praise, she’s just saddened by it. Saddened by seeing the state he’s in. She’s outgrown him, in a way.
And she’s furious at Zez-Kai. He’s the one who was the most sympathetic to the Revanchist, the one most willing to promote action, and yet he watches Nar Shaddaa suffer and does nothing. The apathy sickens her. And Kirnet understands where he’s coming from, of course she does. She just dragged herself out of a shitty decade long exile where she didn’t help anyone. But she still can’t stop the vitriol and disappointment she feels towards Zez-Kai. Lichterally the MOMENT Kirnet connected to the Force again she was begrudgingly pulling Jedi level stunts and was trying to save the miners on Peragus. She just can’t understand the fact that Zez-Kai had the Force the whole time and yet he refuses to use it.
And Vrook somehow becomes her favorite? Sure, she still doesn’t like him, and annoying it is still her fave pass time. But Vrook is actually trying to help Khoonda. Even giving himself up to the mercs is a form of passive action, in a way. And Kirnet respects that! It’s the most action (from her biased POV) that she’s ever seen Vrook take to help people. So even though he annoys her she comes out with a newfound respect and tolerance for him.

Alright. I hope everyone’s doing okay. Um, to those who have mommy issues I wish this as an ode to yall and your struggles with your parents currently. I’m sorry to know how common this is. I hope this poem honors you. With how heavy this poem is, I’m thinking when I get myself more stable, I’ll post this on my patreon. This one was the poem that made me realize that, I can still record these kind of poems but they can be patreon exclusive or restricted to those who can handle it better than the mass.
This was the Day 15 poem that was supposed to be completed with my Beach poem. My Health has other plans. So here it is now.

This one is a bit heavy and mentions what my incubator originally named me. This was me coming to terms with the emotions that I feel for my mother; not love or hatred, but apathy. I don’t fucking like her and for good reason. This poem was an Ode to those who are in my situation with their mothers. I hope this poem comforts you and makes you feel seen.

Constellations of Apathy: The Untethered Soul
In the vast expanse of cosmic play, Where stars and destinies intertwine and sway, There wandered a woman, serene, astray, Whose heart, untouched by night or day, Beat to a rhythm of apathy, come what may.She walked beneath the ceaseless Sun, Its fiery gaze on everyone, Yet, in her eyes, it was merely a run, Of light and warmth, undone, A celestial ballad, unsung. The Moon, in its silvery…
