i’ve seen this floating around my dash a lot, and i’m literally getting my masters’ degree in the topic, so i figure i should put this out there. bear with me, because i’m talking about interacting with fan works, but i have to establish some things first.

a fandom is, by definition, a folk group. i know a lot of people think of “uncivilized” or “down home” types of people when they hear that phrase, but a folk group is any group of people who share some common belief, interest, or trait and create lore around that shared thing. the folklore created by fanworks is the fanart, fanfiction, headcanons, original characters, analyses, anything like that which we create, share, and interact with.

when lore is no longer seen as useful, it dies out. all folklore has some kind of function within the group, whether that be entertainment, education, building a sense of community, etc. people post fanworks because they want to share their appreciation for the media that they formed around with other fans. this has been a fact since the days of mail order fan zines.

when you consume fanworks and don’t interact with them in any way, the creator is going to assume that no one cared. they will believe that their fanworks have no purpose in the fandom, and they’ll stop producing it. people don’t post expecting a bunch of engagement, they do it to share their love for the fandom, but if they are led to believe that their works have no function, the lore dies out.

this is why creators want interaction. part of being in a fan culture is interacting with, and sharing appreciation for the media with, other fans. if that interaction doesn’t happen, people won’t make fanworks.

tl;dr it is a folkloristic/sociological fact that if fan content creators don’t receive interaction, they won’t post anymore. if you like the content, interact.

Btw in case anyone was wondering what I meant by my dead and alive woods it's this.

Obviously they're both alive, but the one on the left looks very dead in comparison. The soil on the left is filled with tiny roots, debris, and leaf litter making it hard for anything to truly get a start past the trees already there and small sparse vegetation.

Another example for each, the grass and greenery are much more vibrant because the soil is so much richer on that side. Another way you can tell is by this,

It's a fungus called ghost pipe, it only grows in well established forest's that are nutrient rich!

In that same vein however, woods with a lot of leaf litter have an insane amount of insects that are also very beneficial! For example, the Northeastern Pine Sawyer Beetle

A lot of Sawyer beetles are considered destructive since they burrow into living trees and lay their larva. But these guys only lay eggs in fallen and decaying trees. The larva help break down the rotting wood and delivering nutrients back into the soil.

I could go on about both sides being healthy despite one looking lush and the other barren but this got longer than I meant😅 anyway if you see me referring to my dead vs living woods this is what I mean

Right now it's a victim of DNS (Domain Name Service) spoofing. This means that a malicious party is trying to steal traffic from FFn by purchasing a very similar domain.

Correction:

The new "fake" site that people are seeing still belongs to FanFiction.net—they just misconfigured their servers and are not redirecting traffic from the bare fanfiction.net to the main site at www.fanfiction.net. There is likely no malicious agent. Didn't mean to scare anyone! Just wanted to let people know the site wasn't deleted!

So if you want to read fanfiction and not see leaves, you have have to type out "www.fanfiction.net".

So I haven’t talked about this on main before, but the situation in South Gaza has gotten so horrifying that I’m p much throwing caution to the wind to desperately plead for eyes on this. I’m raising awareness about stories from activists in Gaza right now, including one of our own.

My lovely, wonderful friend Swin (aka tumblr user @combaticon) was deployed as a volunteer medic to a Gaza hospital on the 9th.

When the bloodshed started, she heard they needed extra hands in Gaza, she spoke Arabic and had the training, and she went.

I’ve been in contact with her throughout. She’s so incredibly brave it takes my breath away. My heart bleeds for these children she’s taking care of and how resilient they are is… astonishing.

Swin and these poor people have been under siege for so long, and they’re in desperate need of critical supplies. They have to filter water through their clothes, and it’s getting dangerously cold. Foods finally been getting through, but there’s not enough blankets and jackets to go around and there’s no fuel for the generators.

Their comrades in the West Bank have been completely pushed out by settler thugs. It’s incredibly unsafe to even be doing humanitarian work for Palestinians. Remember this the next time a Zionist tells you they’re doing this to ‘feel safe’. The IOF is arming lynch mobs.

On a personal note, this has been the most gut-wrenching week of my life. Every day when I wake up without a text from her I feel so much fear. I fight back the grief but I don’t know how to help or what to do. It’s terrifying.

Swin has asked for nothing, absolutely nothing other than something it can show the people around it to make them feel like they’re not going to be abandoned. To make sure they’re not forgotten in some pit praying Rafah opens before Israel decides to slaughter them all.

Today was a bad day. She’s alive but beyond worrying about her privacy now; she’s asked me to share this and to beg that we not lose steam and forget about them. Please share this, and please keep being fucking annoying and loud and digging your heels in with fury because we cannot let these people die silently.
