In the latest way I am perhaps slightly Not Normal about my current special interest (but like, I think in a quite healthy way): realized today I'll be celebrating 13 years clean from cutting in five weeks, which is, dude, wild. This happens to coincide with Lockwood & Co Appreciation Week, and as a treat for me, I'm thinking of ways to perhaps weave the two celebrations together. After all, this is the story I wish I'd heard then, although I'm glad it found its way to me now, too: I can't think of themes that I needed more as a desperately depressed teenager than the triumph of hope over despair, light over darkness, meaning over emptiness, life over death. A story where the siren song of the grave is loud, yet love (of many kinds) is ultimately louder. A story where the grief is made tangible and the hauntings are real, where evil has a face, where it all matters, where it's heavy and still, you don't have to do it alone. The theme that day may or may not work well for self-reflective intent, but maybe - it's "favorite underrated moment," and though a lot of my favorite ones relevant to this topic are common favorites, I do love picking at the thematic threads that are easy to overlook, too.

Maybe I won't write anything specific for it, just spend the time pondering, idk. Some years it doesn't feel like much of an occasion to mark, but I hold to it anyway because it's an opportunity to thank God and give him the glory for carrying me through another year safe, like the way the Israelites were instructed to set up a monument of stones after crossing the Jordan River to remind them and future generations of what God did for them. Some years it feels bigger; this is one of them. I've found myself drifting into old temptations, and sticking to my commitment - while still easier than it was when I first quit - feels a little more like a victory this time around. So it might be nice to mark that somehow, and pouring gratitude and reflection into something I love, something that means a lot to me for similar reasons, just seems fitting.

Or maybe. Maybe. I'll finally get a poem out of this; it's been so long. That would be fitting, too; I used to pour out so much of the self-harm experience into poetry, and it would be rather full-circle to address the healing in that format too. Food for thought.

Anyway! 13 years! Wild.

catharsis: nearing the end

counting down the weeks to freedom (🏫🙅🏻‍♀️) and in need of stress relief (💆🏻‍♀️🕊️🧘🏻‍♀️)...

1. october (tchaikovsky): maybe one day i will record this song bc it's one of my favorites. also really befitting my underlying mood in this latter half of the semester. under all the stress and frustration, i am just tired. i want to see the world. i want to feel the joy of living again. making my life revolve around the confines of school does not feel like living.

2. apparition de giselle (adolphe adam): the music at the part where she's spinning in circles in the "initiation" scene. that's what today feels like. a flurry of movement, a little desperate, and despite the energy, unfulfilled. even soulless. i'm tired, that's all. stupid insomnia - you know that feeling where you're physically tired and when you lie down on the bed it feels like such a relief, yet you can't fall asleep? i don't know why that happens. am i worried about something? possibly? maybe? but during the day, i don't think i feel super worried.

3. mazurka op. 68 no. 3 (chopin): the first piece by chopin i ever played. the way i heard it in my head and the way i played it didn't have as stately a character as this interpretation, but this was the recording i drew most of my inspiration from. i really miss playing piano and the youthful glow i had felt in that era. it feels like ages ago. and with every passing year, it seems i have more pressing priorities like learning how to be an adult, the desire to forge new relationships and tend to them, and establishing my career, so piano consistently falls to the wayside. i don't regret my career choice tho... gladly, after a long-drawn existential crisis in high school, trying to come to a career path that had the best chance of balancing my needs and wants with the world's, i'm still satisfied with my decision. i want to learn how to use my potential to be of service to others, including those beyond my inner circle. i also want to practice piano after my dreaded winter exams. i will make time for both. 4. rainy day coffee shop ambience with piano music and distant thunder: that satisfaction at having stumbled upon the truth, the solidness of it finding a home in my chest. ☺️ i finally figured out what's wrong mentally and now i have something to work with rather than just floundering, feeling "some type of way", unable to get out of it because i don't even know what "it" is. i'm 99% sure that's what's causing my insomnia. i feel so much more hopeful and peaceful now with my feelings validated and all. 🥺 (update: i had the best sleep i've had in ages ☺️)

5. i dreamed a dream (claude-michel schönberg): i seem to always cycle through the same songs like i'm constantly circling the same drain. do i really always cycle through the same set of feelings every couple of weeks? 🤷🏻‍♀️ i have dreams i don't know i can reach. some of them feel more like fantasies than dreams... in my mind, dreams are super ambitious goals i don't know if i can reach but that are in theory possible to reach (more variables are in my control and have a good chance of affecting the future in the way i want), while fantasies are dreams that are closer to impossible to achieve (fewer variables are in my control and may not have a good chance of affecting the future in the way i want). i don't know, maybe they just feel like fantasies for now, and really, it's not impossible. idk, i don't have a crystal ball...

6. the sound of silence: i literally mean the sound of silence tho, not the song 😂 so underrated when the mind has been a noisy mess. ... and then in random mindless moments, like in the shower or when clearing away the dishes, all the music comes rushing back, begging to be heard and felt and loved.

7. arabesque no. 1 (debussy): learned about CBT in psych so i'm trying out using the situation -> thoughts -> feelings -> behavior template in my journal so hopefully i can figure out why i do or don't do the things i do 😅 and then maybe branch into some small "behavioral experiments"...not really sure yet but hopefully it brings me some clarity!

A few weeks ago, someone on here shared their playlist of songs they thought Murderbot might listen to, which I thought was a really cool idea. (If you're the person whose post that was, you have great music taste! Please feel free to comment and remind me who you are!) And that gave me the idea earlier to make a short Spotify playlist of songs that I feel like could generally be talking about parts of TMBD, whether from Murderbot's perspective or not.

The playlist is called "Murderbot Mood" (couldn't resist the consistent branding, lol). As it says in the description, these are "songs that sound like specific aspects of TMBD or adjacent vibes (your mileage may vary)." It's a mix of some older and recent classics, plus a few niche gems I've discovered over the years that I think are seriously underrated.

I did a little curating of the order but not a lot. And again, I just created it yesterday, so it's on the short side. I guess I wanted to share it because music is important to me (and has kept me alive over the years) but I've never gotten to talk about it much with other people? Idk, I grew up super conservative and wasn't allowed to listen to a lot of popular stuff, so I didn't discover most of my favorite songs until I became an adult, and I'm still acquiring new favorites that most people my age grew up listening to (such as *NSYNC). Evermore as an almost-coming-out song is so freaking devastating. “Staring out an open window, catching my death / And I couldn’t be sure, I had a feeling so peculiar / That this pain would be forevermore” (the “open window” being the opportunity to come out and “the pain” realizing she may never get a chance to, after SB2gate). Then “I replay the tape but all it does it pause / on the very moment all was lost” (either Kissgate or SB2). Plus “Is there a line that we can just go cross?” Idk… listening to the song with this interpretation is so sad. What do you think?

evermore (the song) is so underrated. and it is devastating because of the emotion it encapsulates and the implications of that. I wouldn’t subscribe it to a certain day or event, rather the years and years of this perilous journey… the triumphs and severe sense of loss — whether it be people, herself, the life she imagines, yet is somehow just out of reach for her.

the replaying moments/going back and forth/tracing steps/the would’ve could’ve should’ve/writing letters only to get scared and burn them — it’s very specific.

just read the bridge line by line… you can feel the desperation, the hurt, the yearning, the glimmers of light [someone lit from within] that keeps her holding on while she works through inner turmoil, and all the hard things life throws at them.

and somehow

hell was the journey but it brought me heaven / this pain wouldn't be for evermore

The Flower Boat (连奕辰 or Lián Yìchén, Yìchén being his name, he/him) seriously has one of the most underrated songs ever. The emotions are off the charts??? THE LYRICS ARE PURE POETRY??? LizLuvsCupcakes on YouTube said, "This boat is the only ex I respect. His whole breakup song is "I miss her so much but I hope she's happy where she is."" and THEY ARE SO RIGHT!!!

He's typically closed off emotionally, trying to maintain a happy but subdued mood, but he will absolutely be starry-eyed when he talks about Ching Shih (fun fact: she's also known as Zheng Yi Sao). He can also help y'all get through a break up or really any romantic troubles if you sit down with him for a drink.

The Beast of Gévaudan (Gevariel, sometimes referred to as Gévau, he/him) and Policarpa's Spool (Poli for short, she/her) are besties!!! They're both trans and despise romance. They'd rather spend Valentine's Day studying a corpse.

Poli is such a cool gal. She rallies against injustices whenever she can, and she hates how the police system has been used to enforce the marginalization of minorities. When she investigates with a given suspect, her priority isn't to find enough evidence to condemn them but rather look for all evidences possible, even ones that may contradict the suspect being the murderer 'cause she firmly believes in "innocent until proven guilty". Basically, ACAB, baby!

The Mummified Goose (Merneith Gomaa, referred to as MG or Mery for short, she/her) is a hell of a hypewoman! If you're trash-talking yourself, she will shut that shtick down QUICK. She's so unapologetically confident and self-assured that it infects the others around her ehe. She also collects antiques as a hobby to the point her house is kind of a mess, but she takes care of them very well!

"Wait if Poli hates romance, then what's up with–" Queerplatonic partners, my friend!!! Poli and Mery share a deep emotional connection together, and Mery, despite knowing her romantic feelings won't be reciprocated, still loves Poli very much. She adores how determined Poli is in getting the truth, and similarly, Poli loves how much Mery brightens up the room :]

oh my god, yes, finally someone who wants to hear about vivo THANK YOU BEL ANON FOR THIS AMAZING OPPORTUNITY.

so first of all, who is vivo? vivo is a kinkajou anon, and you would probably ask me now: what's a kinkajou? oh baby, i think that you're ready to learn a thing or two it's a yellow monkey (idk i'm dumb, ok? but he is cute and he has a little hat and big brown eyes and lin-manuel miranda's voice), he lives in cuba and he is a puerto rican rapper making music with his best friend andrés.

okay, you may be thinking: what's a kinkajou doing playing music in cuba, don't they like usually live in the rain forest? well, maybe he fell in a shipping crate as a baby, next thing he knew, he was somewhere new, he wasn't singing the same chorus-

and then andrés found him and saved his life and they have been best friends ever since.

but then, like 15 min into the movie, andrés dies. pretty fucked up if you ask me. and now vivo is on a mission to deliver a love song written by andrés to marta, the woman he was in love with. and gabi, his new friend, helps him.

(of course they don't get along at the beginning)

the whole story is amazing. the soundtrack slaps, but what else did you expect, it's literally lin-manuel miranda. the thing is, it's actually so underrated and no one ever talks about it, so it's my duty to force all of you to watch it now. please, do it. i promise you it's amazing.

The only doctor I like lol

My first impression - He's cute! (I have a type with anime guys if ya couldn't tell lol)

My impression now - He is so much more patient then I could ever be. I couldn't deal living with Sherlock. I love how he's the only character who is some semblance of "normal" but at the same time not really.

Favorite thing about that character - He's that ride or die best friend everyone needs! He's like, "Yeah this maybe insane, but count me in!"

Least favorite thing - He doesn't appear enough. I wish we saw more of him.

Favorite line/scene - In the manga when he's trying to create disguises for him and Sherlock. I also really like that scene where he and Sherlock are sitting on the roof having a heart-to-heart.

Favorite interaction that character has with another - John and Miss Hudson. They're a great duo!

My favorite solo from each main character on glee (because why not)

SUE: Vogue. “WILL SCHUESTER I HATE YOU”

KURT: Rose’s Turn. Chris Colfer rarely got songs that highlighted ALL his vocal strengths. This song used everything. He had a strong head voice, an amazing mix, and he can EMOTE WITH EVERY INCH OF HIS LIFE. No wonder he got the Golden Globe.

QUINN: This Is A Man’s World. This scene is ridiculous, but out of context the song absolutely slaps. Diana can BELT and she deserved to do it more.

ARTIE: Stronger. Probably my favorite Britney song. Kevin ate. That is all.

PUCK: Only the Good Die Young. This song is so fun and I think Puck’s voice is very underrated. A good ol’ jam. Thank you for repping the Jewish community king ❤️

WILL: Sway. It’s a shame that we never talk about his voice because HOLY SHIT MATTHEW MORRISON IS INCREDIBLE. This man is so talented and we never acknowledge it because of Will Schuester’s shenanigans.

BLAINE: Somewhere Only We Know. You can hate Blaine all you want but you can’t deny the POWER of this song. The love in his eyes is sickening I am not okay right now

FINN: I’ve Gotta Be Me. Given the fact that Cory didn’t have any singing experience before, this song makes me so fucking happy because you can see how much he had grown as a singer, but also how proud he was of himself! Look at him go!!! (Bonus: If I’m bending the rules in terms of what qualifies as a solo I would 100% make his Paradise By the Dashboard Light. That was his undoubtedly his very best vocal performance. It’s SO FUCKING GOOD it makes me go batshit.)

RACHEL: My Man. “She may be difficult but boy can she sing.”

BRITTANY: Run the World. The dancing is definitely the more impressive part of this number, but it still sounds great! This song really highlighted Heather’s strengths, when most of her songs weren’t very memorable in my opinion.

MIKE: Cool. Maybe Tina should be a professional vocal coach because damn look at him go!! Idk why an Asian kid wanted to play the role of a leader of a white supremacist group but at least he sounds great 🤷‍♀️

MERCEDES: I Will Always Love You. Literally every single Mercedes song is perfect, so this was the hardest one for me. This means I had to base it on acting. And she DELIVERS here. It should be illegal to be this talented.

TINA: Because You Loved Me. The fact that this is one of TWO solos that Jenna actually got to finish infuriates me. She was ROBBED because she is an amazing singer.

SANTANA: Nutbush City Limits. LADIES AND GENTLEMAN, MISS NAYA RIVERA. HOLY SHIT. Finn saying before the song, “They say that true divas aren’t really mortal” is so true. This woman was an absolute icon and I will always be blown away by her talent.

JAKE: Let Me Love You (Until You Learn to Love Yourself). It’s so EARNEST and HEARTFELT and Jacob Artist popped off with the acting. And the falsetto!! God it’s just beautiful.

EMMA: Getting Married Today. This is a trio, not a solo, but it’s so fucking good that I HAD to do it. That is literally one of the hardest female songs on Broadway, and for some reason they had Jayma sing it even FASTER than the original version? I can’t imagine the stress of trying to do that, but she was perfect.

SAM: Copacabana. This is just a really fun song! Everyone’s having a good time and Chord sounds amazing.

RYDER: Your Song. This is my favorite Elton John song, and boy was it done justice. The acting is really good in this scene. The mix of anxiety and earnestness coming from Ryder is adorable. He had great chemistry with whoever that girl was. (On a storyline note, I hated how this all developed though. If it had gone my way, Unique would confess it was her, then Ryder would sing this directly to Unique.)

KITTY: Signed, Sealed, Delivered I’m Yours. I just really like this number. Obsessed with Becca’s high notes.

Whispangle & Never Gonna Give You Up

(How one song represents a ship perfectly)

Okay, so when you think of whispangle, the first thing that comes to mind probably isn't never gonna give you up- which is surprising, considering how this underrated masterpiece fits the ship so perfectly.

Skipping the first few lines, let's go to "I just wanna tell you how I'm feeling, gotta make you understand".

I just wanna tell you how I'm feeling - Both Tangle and Whisper want to tell the other their feelings, but can't bring themselves to- they believe their crush isn't mutual.

Gotta make you understand - Still going back to the desperately wanting to tell the other their feelings, this line is relatively the same as the last.

Never gonna give you up - Tangle and Whisper trust eachother deeply, and would never give up on one another- even in the Metal Virus arc, Tangle, as she died, said "Don't keep me waiting too long", because she knew Whisper wouldn't fail. She knew Sonic, Whisper, and everyone that she was friends with wouldn't fail- and although that may just be trust for all of her friends- because being so trusting is a major part of her character- she trusts Whisper especially, and just as Whisper would never let her down, never give her up, Tangle would never give her up either.

Never gonna let you down - See the end of the last line.

Never gonna run around and desert you - They'd never desert eachother- they may be separated at times, but in the end, they'll always find their way back to one another.

Never gonna make you cry - They never want to upset eachother. In one of the recent issues, aka the 'divorce arc', Tangle accidentally upsets Whisper- and she tries her best to fix her mistake. She never wanted to upset Whisper, and they manage to resolve it in the end.

Never gonna say goodbye - I'll be honest, I had a few Metal Virus related ideas here, but they also literally say goodbye to eachother so. skipping this one

Never gonna tell a lie and hurt you - Whisper doesn't want to lie to Tangle, but she does hide the truth/lie to Tangle in order to 'protect' her in Tangle & Whisper, however eventually she learns to be more honest with her. They don't want to lie to eachother, and they would never want to hurt eachother.

We've known eachother for so long - It's impossible to deny that Tangle and Whisper are incredibly close friends, and work well as a team.

Your heart's been aching, but you're too shy to say it - Heading back to the very first line, Tangle and Whisper really want to tell eachother their feelings- but can't, they're both too shy to say it, too worried that It'll damaged their friendship if the other doesn't share their feelings.

Inside, we both know what's been going on - They both want to confess to the other, but can't. tbh i wasn't entirely sure what to say here

We know the game and we're gonna play it - They both know they can't keep hiding their feelings, and one day one of them is going to confess- so they're going to keep on trying to hide them, until someone confesses. that's the game or smth. idk

I'm not good at the song association thing, so I will skip that one. Sorry. IDK, I tend to listen to instrumental stuff, and I don't always think "OMG, this is so Skleeby from Splungo's Adventure" when I listen to music.

Favourite thing about them?

I love his sincere desire to change the world for the better, as well as his love of others and hope for a better future. Of course, it's not just hope but also a DRIVE to make the world better. He just seems like such a sweet, hardworking dude, and if he was real I would love to know him.

Least favourite thing about them?

The fact that we don't get to see more of him. TBF, he died well before the start of Naruto, so we only see him through memories (and that one weird Infinite Tsukuyomi filler story, but I digress.) I want to see how he'd interact with MORE canon characters, I want to see MORE of the original Akatsuki, and I want to know MORE about the Hidden Rain Village.

I'd love a spin-off miniseries about the Hidden Rain Village.

Favourite line?

I'm not always the best at memorizing lines, but I'll go with this one, where he sets out to go on a mission to scout out an area.

"This land is crying, as usual. It continues to endure much pain. In the past, I hated this land that was crying all the time. But now... I want to save it... I truly feel that way. It's too much like the crybaby I used to be for me to leave it alone."

Obviously he is besties with Konan and Yahiko, they have a truly inseparable bond. I also imagine that he was close with each and every member of the original Akatsuki.

Sadly, there are only a few characters we see him interact with in canon, and many of them are minor.

In a happier timeline where nothing bad happened and the Hidden Leaf was magically not corrupt at all, I could see him being friends with Naruto.

OTP?

Nagato/Yahiko/Konan. They have a deep bond, forged through their collective efforts to endure many hardships. To me, it's as if they are destined to be together and to always develop a deep, intimate care and affection for each other. Even if they were to reincarnate, they'd find each other once more.

Yahiko/Obito, Jiraiya/Yahiko (IDK if anyone ships that, LOL,) Zetsu/Yahiko, Madara/Yahiko (Is that a thing?)

Random headcanon?

He learned how to do a lot of basic repairs, so that if the shack got beaten up, he could fix it. I could also see him loving children.

Unpopular opinion?

My man's underrated. I feel like most people tend to either forget about him or just think of him as the guy that became the Deva Path. I mean... I get why, but I wish he was more popular. How can you not love him?

I am very neutral on him, so my apologies for some lame-ass answers. Also, i felt like I spent a lot of time writing my opinions on Yahiko.

Favourite thing about them?

His abilities were neat, as one of the few who could use Wood Style. i also respect how he tried his best to keep Team 7 in check and (later on) help rebuild the Hidden Leaf after Pain destroyed it.

Least favourite thing about them?

The fact that he was sidelined for most of the War Arc, serving little use outside of buffing up Zetsus. IDK, that was kind of disappointing.

Oh, I also feel weird about the fact that he's supposed to watch Orochimaru in Boruto. Like, if we treat the anime backstory as canon, dude should be traumatized by Orochimaru.

Favourite line?

That one where he threatens to use "draconic measures" on Team 7 when they keep arguing and fighting each other, I guess.

brOTP?

Kakashi once they are both adults. Sai after he is free from Dan's control, since they could relate to each other a lot (especially if you treat his anime backstory as canon.)

I could see maybe see him befriending Anko as well.

Maybe Yamato/Shizune. Yamato/Anko would either be cool or would suck.

Um... I thought the ANBU Kakashi filler arc (and Yamato's role in it) was overrated.

Dude needs more development, but that's probably the opposite of an unpopular opinion.

Coffee's Random Rec List (take 1)

I have no explanation for this except that I've wanted to do more to promote other writers for a while, but I didn't know how to go about making rec lists and, well, mostly I was just lazy. So, basically, I'm going through my bookmarks and picking out some underrated gems. I can't say I'll do this with any particular frequency, and I'm mostly doing this tonight to procrastinate my own writing, haha. After Hawkmoth's defeat, Adrien Agreste finally gets a taste of freedom as he moves from the Mansion to his own flat, and from Lycée to University. He relies a little too much on food delivery for Marinette's taste, though. Maybe food won't be the only thing simmering in the kitchen as they learn how to cook together...

5 Chapters. Fun fact: this is the first fic I ever bookmarked on ao3. (Admittedly, I was reading a lot before I started bookmarking, but the fact that this fic made me take the leap says something). What can I say about this? Well, PRPR and cooking together? Idk why that wouldn't be enough right there. It's SO CUTE. I've definitely read it more than once.

2. If I’m evil, and you’re evil, then who’s stopping Hawkmoth? by @ninoisntluka

Multimouse is caught by Mayura and Hawkmoth. The only way to survive was to swear fealty to their cause. But Aspik refuses to let his friend go down this dark path alone, even if it means betraying the one he loves most. Actually, most of this could’ve been solved if either of them had actually talked with each other, but the mind games take on a life of their own. Watch two idiots who are essentially playing tic-tac-toe, but think they are playing 5-Dimensional chess, when the game is checkers.

Oneshot. I won't spoil more than the summary says. but this is pure crack/identity shenanigans. A fun and chaotic read.

For whatever unfathomable reason, Kagami decides to play matchmaker. She’s worryingly bad at it. So of course, Alya has to do as much damage control as possible.

Oneshot. This one is so funny! Kagami's trying to set up the love square, but like the summary says she's a terrible matchmaker, and it's peak comedy. It has great platonic Kagami and Alya interactions too!!

4. burning through the hours talking by @calico-and-lace

Stay a while, stay a while, stay here with me, lie here with me. I like me better when I'm with you. A love-square song fic played to the tune of I Like Me Better by Lauv.

Oneshot. This one starts with Adrinette snuggling on a rooftop in New York, and their relationship progresses in different Marichat and Ladynoir scenes over time. It's just really soft, and it works so well with the song!!

5. safe and sound by @agnes-is-wright

Adrien has nightmares, and finds comfort in an unlikely place. Or rather, person.

Oneshot. Hits right in the hurt/comfort feels. Adrien ends up calling Marinette for comfort in the middle of the night. Short but very sweet!

6. Totally Not a Rom-Com by @nomolosk

Marinette Dupain-Cheng and Adrien Graham de Vanily (formerly Agreste) meet for the first time on a trans-Atlantic flight to New York. Cuteness and fluff ensues.

Oneshot. No-Miraculous AU, but even if that's not normally your jam I urge you to give this one a try because it's freaking adorable. Also I've definitely wanted to do that whole falling in love on a plane thing HAHA. Needless to say...I have not been successful.

7. i say your name in hopes you hear it in the stars by @lilacteapot

Ladybug and Chat Noir have been separated for years after the defeat of Hawk Moth. No word has come from either since then, and Marinette hopes to see his shadow pass during her visits to the Trocadero even if the chances are slim to none. After a chance encounter, however, she may hear the familiar sound of her kitty's bell once again.

This is bittersweet but ends on a hopeful note, and it's so heartfelt! Plus, the writing is lovely. (I may be biased since this is one of my friends but shhhh!)

"Stretch" (2014) review

Aka ✨ why this movie is one of the most underrated ones I've ever seen and why it is some of Patrick Wilson's best work ✨

"If you like stories about chance and coincidence, here's one you've never heard" gives me the chills every time 😮‍💨

Patrick Wilson is one of the most underappreciated actors of his time, like, not only do his other projects demonstrate that he has drama, romance, instruments, and singing down ✨, but here he is finally given a chance to flaunt his impeccable comedic timing, vocalizations, and expressions

Idk maybe I just love movies with narration (ex., "Heathers," "Jerry Maguire," "Amelie," "Eloise at Christmastime," "Megamind," "American Made," "The Outsiders," etc.)

But jokes aside, I will defend Patrick Wilson's narration throughout the movie no matter whAT ANYONE SAYS YOU CAN PRY IT FROM MY COLD DEAD FINGIES; IT IS AT TURNS FUNNY AND RELATABLE AND PROFOUND AND WE GET TO KNOW THE MAIN CHARACTER BETTER 😤😤

It does start a bit slow, especially if you aren't as invested in Patrick Wilson as I am 🙃🫠 but if you stick with it and pay attention to the subtle comedic elements in the meantime 👌🏻

This movie is not afraid to be a bit irreverent, which is a modern and mainstream rarity

Stretch and Charlie are so cute together; I wish more of their interactions had been kept in the final cut because when I think of the quality content that we missed 😩💖

"Who gains weight in their neck?" "Sexy people." "Three months of Rosetta Stone- I HATE THE FUCKING FRENCH." "We was gettin' all romantic, watching Titan-tic..." and so, so many more

Honestly, Karl is an integral part of this film as well- he may seem overtly cartoonish to some, but again, we get to know the main character better through him, as his presence gives us a visual of Stretch's inner struggle; he contributes to the dark humor vibe, and Ed Helms was clearly having the time of his life (as was the entire cast)

Speaking of which, stellar casting all around, especially those who were cast against type; love when directors give that stuff a chance. Everyone was made for their role

Dark humor, satire of Hollywood, homage to 80s films

The Navstar scene. If you know you know

Same goes for the post-Candace club exit scene with the valet, the wannabe rapper, and the sex club exit scene (there's a man wearing only balloons. need I say more). I mean, the whole movie is basically the best part and I'm trying not to make this review me just naming every scene and going "yes. this is good" but these are some of the most standout parts

The soundtrack may be atrocious overall, but the exception is the song at the end (although I was disappointed when I read that it was originally supposed to be "Telephone Line" by ELO but they didn't have enough in the budget because that would have gone so hard) 😩💕

Speaking of the ending, why is it so incredibly pure and sweet to me that it would almost make me cry if I weren't medicated? 🥺 Something about the setting of the diner, exuding vintage charm and glowing in the sun the quiet morning after the previous night of chaos, and the serendipity of how Stretch and Charlie finally reveal how much they've obviously liked each other for a while, and after all of the danger and depravity, everything ends soft and gentle and alright 😊💖

This film is somehow so sleazy and wholesome at the same time- against the backdrop of drugs, sex clubs, threats of violence, and constant swearing, it's ultimately a story about overcoming cynicism and self-destruction, getting your "mojo" back, taking control of your life, and allowing for the possibility that things happen for a reason ✨ Honestly? 10/10
