in the interest of fostering more discussion about deeper poetry, if you were running a poetry contest what four poems would you want to make the finals?

I want you to know I have been thinking about this so intensely since first receiving this ask - hence the time I took to answer. I will probably change my mind if you ask me again in a few months or weeks or even days but as for now my answer is :

“Having a Coke with You” by Frank O’Hara because I’m still bitter. POEM OF ALL TIME ! I love love & I love art & I love the rhythm in this & I love listening to him read it & I love how universally loved this poem is & also subjectively it is one of the first poems that gave me that spark & it has never lost it

“Echo (All She Lost She Lost)” by Leila Chatti because I want an abecedarian poem to be on there ! and also she does something so wonderful and interesting with language in this one. and long poems are so good and deserve more love

“[I aborted two daughters]” by Diane Seuss because not only is that poem a real head in hands moment but the entire collection frank sonnets is SUCH an interesting piece of contemporary poetry both on the autobiographical level and the technical level and especially the use of sonnets

“I Won’t Lie This Plague of Gratitude” by Kaveh Akbar because I also wanted happy poetry on here and that one is a goat for sure - and less generally known that Hammond B3 Organ Cistern but just as deserving of the love
