Lesbians in Space Masterpost:
Happy Valentines! My favourite genre by far is one I like to call Lesbians In Space. This is the pinnacle of all human creation in my opinion. The only rules of Lesbians in Space is that there MUST be actual, real sapphics (at least one), and that space has to be somewhat incorporated. That's it. If you have more examples of this PLEASE tell me.
*there's also a list of honorable mentions for things that fit the vibe in my opinion but aren't as explicitly Lesbians In Space.
Books/Novellas
The Locked Tomb series (arguably THE lesbians in space series) by Tamsyn Muir. If you're on Tumblr you've probably heard of these but the first book is a murder mystery in a creepy space mansion.
The Teixcalaan series (A Memory Called Empire and A Desolation Called Peace) by Arkady Martine. A poetry-obsessed ambassador from a space station subject to the whims of the Teixcalaan empire needs to unravel a plot and figure out wtf her predecessor was up to, while being assisted by a government agent.
The Serpent Gates Duology (The Unspoken Name and The Thousand Eyes) by AK Larkwood. Csorwe, an orc who was raised as a sacrifice to a god, is rescued by a shady sorcerer and pulled into his plot regarding world dominantion, abd then falls hard for a math nerd.
An Unkindness of Ghosts by Rivers Solomon (with a non-binary/trans/gnc and sapphic mc). This book is a lot heavier in terms of trauma than the other things on this list, esp regarding slavery+neurodiversity+transphobia so yeah maybe check a list of CW but it's good!
The Necessity of Stars by E. Catherine Tobler (novella). Former UN diplomat deals with memory loss and aliens. Technically not as space-y as the rest of this list.
This Is How You Lose the Time War by Amal El-Mohtar and Max Gladstone (novella). Two spies on two sides of a time-and-space war test each other's wits.
Light From Uncommon Stars by Ryka Aoki (trans girl MC, side characters that are lesbians, technically it's not ALL in space but it's pretty dang space-y.) Evil lady teaches a young violinist in order to collect her soul, hijinks ensue.
Podcasts:
The Strange Case of Starship Iris. A doctor accidentally joins a group of space smugglers while uncovering a government conspiracy. Also has a trans guy and two nb characters.
The Pasithea Powder. After a war between two planets, two old friends, one an honoured war hero and the other a disgraced scientist, are pulled back together due to a government plot.
TV shows:
She-Ra (for kids). You know what this show is about. Cadet of the evil forces who's good at everything turns out to be the chosen one that fights for good against her former bestie.
Doctor Who s10- the Doctor's companion falls in love with a puddle that's a girl.
Honorary mentions:
Winter's Orbit- romance sci-fi, gay arranged marriage in space.
The Murderbot Diaries - series of novellas. queer side characters aside, Murderbot isn't human but definitely has an interesting concept of romance and gender that I find pretty dang queer.
The Left Hand of Darkness by Ursula Le Guin. The blueprint!!!! Local male ambassador (deragatory) goes to covertly visit a very cold planet where people are sex-less most of the time (and very interesting genders). The discussion of gender is fascinating in my opinion.
Wolf 359 (podcast). Pissed off crew of a wreck of a ship do their best to survive space and each other. (there's a canonical gay character but also Isabel Lovelace is a lesbian in my heart)
Among the Stars and Bones (podcast) a group of xenopaleantologists go dig up an ancient alien site. there's an important nonbinary main character.

Today I will pretend that I am working on my fic by nailing down my headcanons for TMA S1 clothing and outfits.
Jon
At work he is always in professional officewear, always put togther, has a sharp haircut. Rarely a full on suit but sometimes the elements of one, like a vest with no jacket. Always a tie. Gravitates toward white shirts and dark everything else because he thinks dark colours all automatically match each other (they don't). No patterns. No accessories. Always looks uncomforable in his own clothes, like they were bought for someone else. No one ever taught him how to dress himself nicely so he is doing his best approximation of what others are doing and it only mostly works (it would never occur to him that his belt and shoes should be the same colour, for example). He irons everything on laundry day but then wears clothes for multiple days in a row because he has no time/is secretly living in the archives for most of the week, so his overall look is far more rumpled than he realises.
At home (on the increasingly rare days that he isn't at the institute) he just dresses in his old uni clothes, which lean towards alt and gnc stuff. This has more to do with the fact that he cbf to upate his wardrobe (shopping is hell) and less to do with it actually reflecting how he wants to present himself now as an adult, but it's fine because he never goes anywhere. There's some skirts in there, and merch for weird indie bands that no one's ever heard of. "Somehow" he got custody of a few of Georgie's old shirts in the break up and he will wear these to sleep in because they are soft and loose and comfy on him (the air quotes are because he is in denial about being a clothing thief). He owns eyeliner that he doesn't wear anymore because he's convinced himself that he's too mature for it now. He has a jacket covered in pins for various causes that he also never wears anymore but he loves it too much to get rid of it.
Martin
Also professional, but a much softer version. Like Jon he is afflicted with desperately-need-to-look-like-I-know-what-I-am-doing-even-though-I-don't disease, and that reflects in his clothing choices. He always wears multiple layers and his clothes all trend towards being too baggy, both for trans reasons and also the dismal realities of shopping for plus size clothing on a budget (more often than not, you just have to buy whatever you can physically put on your body even if it will never look right or fit properly). His default setting is a collared shirt with a cardigan over the top, but the collar still visible. Prefers cooler colours because warm tones bring out the red in his skin and he worries about looking flustered all the time. Paints his nails sometimes when he is feeling a bit gender. His mother had his ears pierced when he was little but he never wears earrings.
His at home clothes are exactly the same as his work clothes. Martin doesn't have spare cash for extra outfits; he has to buy nicer things for work, so when something becomes too worn to get away with in the office he just wears it around the house until it's too faded and full of holes to hang onto. He will patch or darn things that he particularly likes or thinks he can get some more life out of. Taught himself how to do this by watching youtube videos and is actually pretty good at it; some of his patched clothes could almost look trendy! He probably has a handful of clothing items that are actually good because he bought them for himself as a treat, like a dress shirt in a colour that matches his eyes, and some pants with a particularly flattering waistline. He wears these things when visiting his mum because he wants to look put together but also because he usually needs some cheering up on those days.
Sasha
She's a woman trying to be taken seriously in her profession, so she dresses seriously. Lots button downs tucked into high waisted skirts, a few dresses but nothing too feminine. Nothing with hemlines above the knee or anything that shows her shoulders. Nothing too form-fitting, and she's also usually wearing mutliple layers. Subdued but nice patterns. She walks a fine line between not wanting to look like a grandma but also avoiding anything too modern (lots of old fashioned types in academia). Always considers her appearance and puts together outfits where everything matches and looks flattering. Prefers muted but warm colours, browns and oranges and yellows. Jewellery is always simple and understated, like some small gold hoops that are okay to wear every day, and maybe a necklace. Always wears her hair up off her face and natural makeup. She gets herself french manicures when she has the spare cash and feels like treating herself.
Outside of work, she has a really defined style and it's much more modern and less understated. A go-to outfit would be all fitted black clothes but dressed up with bright heels, belt and chunky earrings all in a matching colour, like an eye-catching red. Her hair is usually down and curly.
Tim
Strays a lot closer to the 'casual' side of business-casual than anyone else is comfortable with. He's received warnings for dress code violations before (none of the others ever have). Tends towards close-fitting clothing, dark slacks matched with shirts that have lots of colour and patterns (but rarely anything that clashes or veers too far away from office-appropriate). No hawaiian shirts or jeans. He used to have coloured hair and matching nails but was told it violated the dress code so he stopped doing that back in his research days. Always wears earrings and often they are 'fun', like a set of studs that look like little birds or something. Also has some rings, and a nice watch that his parents got him as a graduation present.
Outside of work, yes hawaiian shirts and jeans, and maybe he fucks around with some jewellery or makeup if he has a date or is feeling a bit gender. That would be his go-to leaving-the-house outfit. He is someone who has very distinct 'outside clothes' that look good and he will let people see him wearing, and 'inside clothes' which do not look good and no one but Danny and Sasha have ever seen him wearing. His inside clothes tend to be old mismatched workout clothes with the elastic starting to go. He will wear these all day even if he has no intention of working out.
Elias
Always impeccably tailored three-piece suits. Definitely not afraid of colour, but he would never wear anything remotely close to being described as 'flamboyant'. Prefers solid colours over prints or patterns, but definitely owns some pinstripes. Always matches his shoes to his belt. No jewellery other than the occasional wedding ring (it's always a different one and never lasts more than a few months) and a series of very expensive watches and tie pins (he must own dozens of them). Doesn't go overboard with eye imagery; restricts himself to cufflinks that have either eyes or the institute logo on them (he has several different sets because, like the watches, they are often anniversary presents and he has so many anniversaries). He will sometimes wear some subtle eyeliner because he wants to frame his eyes, but this is only for special occasions. Never looks anything less than 110% put together, and overall his aesthetic is what Jon's is trying (but failing) to be.
Outside of work, he is still always in very expensive clothes (because Peter pays for his entire wardrobe) but not suits, just the dressier side of casual. He does the annoying rich person thing where all of his clothes are tailored to fit him, so even his casual wear looks effortlessly amazing. A normal outfit for a relaxing day at home would be something like grey slacks and a black turtleneck (but in a distinctly whoreish way).

it's so frustrating when someone like dylan mulvaney, a gnc gay former theatre kid who's almost definitely vulnerable in some way (though it's not my place to say for sure), becomes the face of the trans movement and the person receiving heaps of criticism, occasionally valid but mostly just homophobia-fuelled hatred. and meanwhile the eli erlicks, riley j dennises, julia serranos gretcher felker-martins of the world escape unquestioned, because they are straight/bi men who don't provoke the same kind of fear in the hearts of conservative men and women as a flamboyant effeminate gay man - the harm these men cause is to women, predominantly lesbians or bi women, and so easier to ignore.
idk where i'm going with this, just maybe asking people to consider why dylan mulvaney grates on you so so much, especially when compared with men (transwomen or otherwise) who are spouting far more harmful ideas?

Some extremely self indulgent queer HC for the original archives group under the cut. I go into way too much detail with them btw so be warned.
Martin: gay ftm transman, on HRT but no surgeries due to him on starting to physically transition after him mum went into age care. He/him only.
Sasha: trans woman, demi and bi. Been on HRT for a few years and has had no surgeries. She realised she was trans in her teens and swung incredibly hard into being feminine. Only just recently let herself be more comfortable with anything vaguely masculine (body hair, thick brows, upper lip fuzz, etc.) and is loving it. She/her only as well.
Tim: Just identifies as queer. He doesn't really know his sexuality outside of “he likes who he likes” and would define his gender as “whatever the fuck.” If he did put labels on it, he'd probably be pansexual and genderqueer, but he's very happy undefined. Also likes drag in his past time. He/him but she/her and they/them during drag or from certain close friends.
Jon: Bi ace obviously. I am, however, torn between afab and amab Jon. If he was ftm I think he would have transitioned very early on and is where he wants to be with their transition. Top surgery, HRT, and some other stuff.
On the other hand, I can more easily imagine amab Jon who assumes he's 100% cis during TMA with how he is written. He'd spend most of his life vaguely aware of trans people, but one day had a sort of 'Oh' moment perhaps when Tim was showing off his drag and went down a painful spiral of gender questioning. Coming out on the end of it realising they might not be very cis. Either way, he/they transmasc/non-binary Jon supremecy.
Cursed bonus:
Jonah Magnus: Gay homophobic man. I read one fanfiction that Jonah was trans in his original life and that has buried itself into my skull and will never leave me alone against my wishes. However, every body since his first has been cis male. Absolutely not an ally and has never done anything for any gay person except for himself. Probably one of those shitty people who thinks gnc queer people are ‘pushing it’ or something. Has called people slurs as insults.

Stupid The Magnus Archives headcanon #7
This one has major spoilers
OG Elias was trans (look I headcanon a lot of the characters as trans or GNC what else do you want from me. This isn’t what this is about). Never got surgery because his father didn’t approve of it and so couldn’t afford to do it.
When Jonah took over, suddenly he was trans too, he hated it. A body that wasn’t his, that’s not an uncommon issue for him, those first years were always a struggle. But this. This was a hell no moment.
He went and got the surgeries immediately, and created a fund for all institute employees to get the surgeries as needed no questions asked.
This is why Martin wanted to work at the institute, easiest and fastest way to get gender affirming care.

I really think more content creators in the tma fandom need to be more mindful of how they present certain characters, especially in fanfic. Sometimes I go through ao3 and I wonder whether or not op is aware of how genuinely awful their fic is. And I don't mean in the "I don't like this au" or "their grammar isn't good" way. I mean in the "this writing pushes a racist, homophobic, biphobic, transphobic or otherwise bigoted stereotype or narrative" way.
I think more writers need to take a step back and look at the wider implications of their fic before publishing it.
Like, why do you only write Tim as a complete flirt who sleeps with everyone he meets? Are you wildly misinterpreting his character? Or do you assume that bc he's bi and mentioned to have casual sexual partners?
Why do you write elias as a sexual predator? Is it because you think that's the only way to make your story "dark" (it's not)? Or is it because you can't write gay villains without making them a homophobic stereotype?
Why do you write Daisy as a butch lesbian and/or trans woman? Is it just because that's your 'headcanon'? Or is it because you, consciously or not, see trans and gnc women as more dangerous and threatening?
Why do you write Jon as "feral" while also headcanoning him as being dark-skinned? Especially when you write other characters (particularly Martin) as being white or light-skinned? Is it just because that's the 'popular fandom interpretation' of him? Or is it because you see men of colour, particularly SW Asian men (which Jon is often headcanoned as), as scary and dangerous?
This isn't about discourse or just "not liking" a fanfic. This is asking fic writers, not just for tma but as a whole, to look at their work and address the implicit biases and prejudices that are present in their writing. When you're putting content out there that potentially thousands of people could see, you have to be aware of if your writing is pushing harmful narratives. It's not "just fanfiction" if it's a reflection of your own shitty beliefs - regardless of whether these beliefs are conscious.
And before you ask, yes, you can rb this (in fact you're highly encouraged to)

Jon has ADHD? Cool. I do too. I like the podcast though I haven’t listened to the whole thing. I liked the first ten episodes. Do you like that other horror podcast with queer people on it, Welcome to Nightvale?
He doesn't canonically have ADHD (and I don't think the author deliberately coded him that way) but he has so many relatable ADHD traits that I started headcanoning him that way in season 1. A lot of people headcanon him as ADHD, autistic, or both. And I think he can easily be read as either/both. (Not surprising; ADHD and ASD are cousins and have a lot of commonalities.)
He's also canonically ace spectrum. It was implied in one episode and when asked, the author said that Jon may or may not actually use the term asexual to describe himself, but did confirm that he's along that spectrum. And iirc it's not confirmed whether he IDs as biromantic, pan, etc., but he's dated both women and men. It's left up to the audience to conceptualize the details of what that looks like and what words he might use, which is actually really cool because ace people don't get a lot of rep in general and it's nice that ace fans can sort of project their own flavor of asexuality onto him. I've seen headcanons for him ranging from sex averse to sex neutral to sex favorable. (There's also a metric ton of trans/nb/GNC!Jon and trans/nb/GNC!Martin fic out there, which is delightful.)
I do like WTNV. That one's more surreal, kinda lighthearted horror -- leans more into the unquestioned uncanny -- so it's very different from TMA's more solemn horror/tragedy vibes, but I like them both. Though admittedly I'm very behind (like at least a year) on WTNV so I need to catch up, lol.
But I do love the seemingly niche trope of "MLM whose job it is to monologue spooky things to the audience".
