this is the same anon who listens to both lin and taylor, but feels less enthusiastic about her nowadays - reporting my thoughts on ttpd that you absolutely did not ask for.

i just didn't get it. i know that saying "the songs sound the same" is usually a cheap shot at taylor's discography, but that's sincerely how i feel after giving the entire anthology a listen. i'm sure that later on i'll start to pick up on the differences - but i did a rapid fire game of let's listen to a random part in the middle of a song and then cut to a random part of another song, and the instrumentals/vocal tones were so similar it wasn't even jarring. they all sound the same, except for 1 or 2 songs. even midnights, which had a very uniform vibe, didn't feel like this. nor did cardigan or evermore feel like this, which are arguably even quieter albums.

i feel bad saying all this because i was very curious to see what this album would be like, especially with an interesting title like "the tortured poets department". but i don't know how to express my opinion rn. it's not that the songs are terrible? but i don't see any type of audible progression in the album, and most of them sound like the sort of quiet, toned-down song you might get in the latter third of an album.

they give me "the archer" vibes without the oomf and genuine meaning behind that song. so it's not beguiling and interesting, it's just directionless. there's no beat no melody.

idk man. i was hopeful but this just crashed my enthusiasm even more. maybe i'm being dramatic and i'm sure i'll salvage a few favs out of this anyways, but. sigh.

you're right, i didn't ask for this, but thank you for writing this essay for me, because it's interesting to see someone else's point of view - not very different from my own.

i have to agree, for me most of the songs sound the same, & i literally don't remember any song (except like maybe 3-4), which never happened to me with any taylor's album. it feels so... lazy. & it has some of her worst lyrics ever. i don't love any of it.

i think it's a good idea to give it more time & a few more listens, but like i also said before, i literally have to force myself to listen to this album because i'm so bored. lord save me.

...and for your information, i am the archer's biggest hater. i can't stand this song, mostly because of the production (sorry jack & my friends who love this one). maybe this is why i don't really like ttpd.
