How to Lose Weight Quickly and Safely
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 70% of American people are obese or overweight. Those who wish to reduce weight as rapidly as possible must consider an essential question: How can you lose weight quickly and safely?
"Creating a continuous calorie deficit with balanced meals and physical activity is the quickest method to lose weight," says Gaby Vaca-Flores, a certified dietitian and founder of Glow+Greens, a nutrition and skin care consultant headquartered in Santa Monica, California.
While it is undoubtedly feasible to restrict calories sufficiently to lose a significant amount of weight in a week, Vaca-Flores advises against choosing the most severe diet. "Although you may notice quick results at first, a weight reduction plateau may be just around the corner due to a slowing of your metabolism," she warns.
This slowing, also known as metabolic adaption and sometimes referred to as "starvation mode," occurs when fast weight loss, sometimes known as a crash diet, confuses your body into believing you're hungry.
“The body requires energy – calories – to power basic biological functions, including digestion, breathing (and) pumping blood through the body, along with the activity you do throughout the day,” explains Mia Syn, a registered dietitian based in Charleston, South Carolina, and author of “Mostly Plant-Based.” “When you don’t consume enough energy from food for these functions, you can put your health at risk.”

To compensate in a restricted calorie environment, the body adapts to using fewer calories each day to function. This leads to a slowing in metabolism, which makes it even more difficult to lose weight and ultimately leads to rebound weight gain.
Cutting calories too dramatically can also result in muscle loss, which exacerbates the situation. Muscle burns more calories at rest than fat because it is more metabolically active. If your body begins to break down muscle to fuel its essential activities, your metabolism will decrease even more, making reducing weight and keeping it off long term challenging.
Rapid Weight Loss Might Result In Rebound Weight Gain
If you've followed dietary advice and lost a considerable amount of weight only to have it return, you're not alone. It's not your fault either. The human body is built to preserve as much balance as possible; when you lose weight, your metabolism adapts because the system believes food shortage has become a threat to existence.
Because the body prefers to maintain weight, a gradual strategy to decreasing excess pounds is preferable than suddenly reducing calories. "It's preferable to pace your weight reduction by eating just enough calories to maintain a deficit while satisfying the majority of your body's energy demands," Vaca-Flores advises. "This will assist keep your metabolism running smoothly."

Determining the number of calories you need to eat to meet that rate of weight loss will depend on several factors, including your age, starting weight, activity level and sex. Candace Pumper, a staff dietitian with the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center in Columbus, says, “The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics position statement on adult weight management recommends 1,200 to 1,500 calories per day for women and 1,500 to 1,800 calories per day for men to support weight loss.”
She notes, however, those guidelines are “not meant to substitute for professional nutritional advice or treatment. It’s recommended individuals follow the advice of their dietitian’s guidance regarding appropriate calorie intake, as many factors affect calorie needs.”
Furthermore, "if you lose weight too rapidly, you'll undoubtedly have drops in your energy levels and even headaches, which might make it difficult to keep on track," Vaca-Flores adds. "This usually happens when you don't eat enough or over-exercise."
Rapid weight loss may be necessary only under exceptional conditions. "A extremely low-calorie diet is occasionally prescribed for individuals who are obese and need to reduce weight for health reasons or before undergoing weight-loss surgery," Syn explains. The diet is "only followed for a limited amount of time and under the supervision of a doctor or dietician" in certain instances. If you want to reduce weight rapidly, she recommends "working with and being overseen by a health care practitioner."
Other Weight Loss Alternatives
While many individuals desire to lose weight quickly without exercising, it's vital to remember that exercise may help you kickstart weight loss and keep it off in the long run; remember, muscle is more metabolically active than fat and can help you maintain your weight. According to a 2021 review research published in the journal iScience, exercise is more significant for longevity and health benefits than weight loss.
Bariatric or weight reduction surgery, as well as other methods of medically supervised weight loss, can assist persons who are extremely overweight in losing weight safely and permanently. These tactics, however, are not necessarily quick means to success and may need patience.

This is Meredith, a friend of mine who, whenever I encounter her at parties I always ask her about her research on this stuff. She's fat-positive and doing research for her PhD on weight-loss surgery in Canada. In her tweets she says she's looking to talk to people who are "engaged in fat politics, have had negative or harmful experiences in surgery", particularly cis men, trans and non-binary people, and BIPOC.
Meredith is one of the most gentle and kind people I know and I'm sure talking to her will be a wonderful experience. It seems like she could use more fat trans voices in her research, and I am sharing this with her permission, because I know there are a lot of people on tumblr who have a lot to say. Let your voices be heard!

Obesity: The Science, Culture, and Politics of Fatness in America
In Fall 2023, students enrolled in Dr. Margot Finn's course on the science, culture, and politics of obesity worked in groups to research and write captions for food history materials.
Most of these items were from the Special Collections Research Center's Janice Bluestein Longone Culinary Archive.
These were featured on the Shapiro Library Screens in Bert's Study Lounge.
Tumblr media
M. L. Holbrook, Eating for Strength (New York, M. L. Holbrook & co. [c1888]). Library of Congress.
The 1888 edition of Eating for Strength, a popular 19th century work on diet written by Martin Luther Holbrook approaches food in a scientific manner, outlining the dietary needs of various classes of people and looking at the healthfulness of various foods. This book includes information about food and diet in relation to health and work, together with several hundred recipes for different foods and drinks. All of these tables illustrate the protein, carbohydrate, and fat content of some of the most common foods that characterized the diets of that era. This underscores how even over 100 years ago, these three macronutrients were seen as important to monitor in order to curb obesity.
Tumblr media
Keeping Your Weight Down (Westfield, N.Y. : Welch Grape Juice Co., [1921?]). Janie Bluestein Longone Culinary Archive.
Published by Welch Juice Company in 1921, this recipe book called Keeping Your Weight Down suggests that Welch's Grape Juice can aid in weight maintenance, and emphasizes its importance in influencing desired health benefits with their beverage. The monochrome-purple book cover showcases an idealized “thin” model covered in loose night clothing, examining a weight scale. Inside, “Pudding and Desserts” recipes are listed in sections with the usage of Welch brand ingredients. Framing grapes as dessert, often eliminated in dieting practices, allows for the luxury of sweets within the strictures of losing weight.

Ruth West, Stop Dieting! Start Losing! (New York : E.P. Dutton & Company, Inc., 1956.). Janice Bluestein Longone Culinary Archive.
Although Ruth West’s Stop Dieting! Start Losing! was a dieting recipe book published in 1956, the artifact has a startling resemblance to modern attitudes about weight, despite the huge body of research conducted on obesity since this time. Today, It’s easy to laugh at slogans like “how to lose 2 to 3 pounds a week” and “16 foods for sex appeal and vitality,” but how different are these claims from those we hear today from diet magazines, social media and even our own medical professionals? Is the rigor of evidence from then to now all that different?

Trans women. I'm grabbing you by the shoulders and yelling. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO BE SKINNY TO BE FEMININE AND PRETTY AND CUTE. PLEASE STOP MAKING DIETS PART OF YOUR TRANSITION GOALS. WEIGHT LOSS IS A SCAM. I LOVE YOU. TAKE CARE OF YOURSELVES. YOU'RE BEAUTIFUL.
#I see so many transfems say they want to have “flat stomachs” or do diet and exercise regimes to try and get an “hourglass figure”#and it really worries me. girls you do not have to destroy yourselves to fit into unachievable beauty standards#the vast majority of cis women don't even fit those standards#and the same goes for you transmascs! I see you! I see you trying to get smaller chests and hurting yourselves with weight loss routines#and excessive workouts. it's not worth it. weight loss has OVER a 90% long-term failure rate and there's a reason for that#I assure you whatever diet you think you've found that “works for you” won't be working so well 5 years from now#and you're going to blame yourself for “slacking off”. but it's not you. it was never you. it was designed to fail.#these standards are made to hurt people and then sell them a false solution at the price of your health#I encourage you to transition if you'd like and live your best life I really do. but please please please do so SAFELY.#if weight loss is part of your transition goals please reevaluate WHY you believe thinness is necessary for achieving femininity#(or masculinity or androgyny but this stuff particularly affects women in the way it's marketed)#do research on fatphobia and the roots of weight loss culture. Learn where these ideas come from and why they're so prevalent.#It's extremely important#take care. stay safe. love you very much#trans#fat liberation#transgender#lgbt#trans rights#fat positivity#diet culture#fatphobia#transfem#trans positivity#transgirl#trans women#trans woman

friendly reminder to my homies to always, always research and find credible sources to your information... was looking up food PH values today (this legit helps manage my intense GERD by eating more appropriate alkaline/basic PH foods) and one of the fuckin articles had lemons and limes listed as alkaline............. bro.........................
lemons and limes are so low on the PH scale they are incredibly acidic and I just. know this. its called CITRIC ACID for a reason... my god
thankfully I found a really helpful medical journal that did a surface level PH test of common foods & ingredients and it's really dope. will absolutely help me plan my nutrition better while keeping my acid vomit at bay
^ pdf for anyone wondering and also looking into alkaline foods to balance chronic GERD ^ (also the higher a foods PH is, the more alkaline it is aka it will assist with neutralizing GERD / acid reflux. generally, aim for foods with a base PH of 5.0 or higher)

Weight loss does not automatically mean your body is eating your muscles and organs. The antivaxxer level of anti science on this site when it comes to weight loss is unbelievable.
Your body will only start "eating" your muscles if you're losing weight AND YOU DONT NEED TO AND ARE HEADED TO BEING UNDERWEIGHT.
WEIGHT LOSS CAN BE SUSTAINABLE. WEIGHT LOSS IS A VIABLE AND SOMETIMES A NEEDED OPTION FOR SOME PEOPLE.
HUGE REMINDER THAT THERE ARE TIMES WHEN WEIGHT LOSS CAN HELP DISABLED FOLK ESP FOLK WITH CHRONIC PAIN. It's not a cure-all but people with chronic pain experience large amounts of inflammation in the body and having excess adipose CAN cause inflammation just by itself. Compound that with extra weight on joints can make movement that may already be difficult even more difficult.
And while I'm on this rant, I'm SO sick of people acting like overeating and binging aren't disordered eating and also forms of self harm. I'm sick of the "body positive" activists who get SO mad that some fat people HAVE become fat through overeating and binging and want to talk about it. Like why can't those of us who gained weight through disordered behaviors actually talk about it? Why don't you talk about or let others talk about the fact that some people go from a restrictive eating disorder to a binge eating disorder.
Reasons Why I a Disabled Person decided to lose weight:
1. I knew I was eating too much junk food and not eating enough fruits and vegetables. So I started working on moderating how much junk food I was intaking and I have been trying really hard to make sure I choose healthier options.
2. My chest was/is too big. It was beginning to cause actual dysphoria issues along with the excess weight giving me constant shoulder and neck pain. Weight loss cannot be targeted at any specific part of your body, but overall weight loss can help you lose cup sizes.
3. The food was making my chronic pain worse. Many ultra processed foods are known to increase pain in people with chronic pain and it's been proven in multiple studies that eating a healthier diet can help decrease pain. It won't get rid of it, but it can help.
4. I was using food as a maladaptive coping mechanism. Stress eating is not actually helpful in the long run. Sure it makes you feel better while you're eating it, but once it's gone the problems, the pain, the stress is all still there.
5. I want to be able to use my crutches and KAFOs more often and having already lost a fair amount of weight, I can definitely 100% say that I have less difficulty using them than when I was at my heaviest. It's easier for myself to push myself in my wheelchair, and it's easier to propel myself in sled hockey. Among this, getting a bigger chair was just out of the question when I last ordered my most recent chair. The world is already so hostile to wheelchair users and spaces are already so narrow, it's easier to have a smaller chair if possible. Like we can talk all we want about how things need to be more accessible and universal design needs to be implemented everywhere so people in all sizes of wheelchairs esp those in power chairs, can get around easily without this being something to worry about, but at the end of the day, I want to be able to get through as best I can, and making sure I'm not going any bigger with my wheelchair is legit just something I have to do.
And you know what, even with all of these reasons, there's still the fact that people deserve bodily autonomy so if I want to safely lose weight for ANY reason, then that's my choice.

(Tw: weight loss and fitness talk)
Dude we are getting back onto our health management again and its a bitch considering we have nearly entirely regained our crippling soda addiction that it took what was probably an ED severity obsession with food and fitness from Ray who was doing it to cope with dysphoria at the time
He managed to "keep it healthy" in the physical sense cause he was fixated on loosing shit too fast as itd "be eating his muscles" or not approaching a healthy ideal weight, but it came at the expense of removing a lot of joy from eating
And we've stepped back from intensively working out and caring about what we eat because 1) Testosterone had us unsure in judging what was going to be our new healthy weight 2) Life transition 3) General stress and shit going on that made it too much to focus on beyond our regular self care work out
But now between looking into surgeries and that we are getting into a sustainable and steady / predictable life rhythm, we ard going back to both keeping an eye on our weight and retoning fully again
And god, yeah I love the gym and go every day we have the physical energy to and tend to stick there for at least 45 minutes - but man without the dysphoria-generated drive and Rays insane teacking and calculation of food in take and burning shits hard to navigate
Not asking for advice cause I have Coach over there and all, but man toning after "letting yourself go" is a pain
Plus I should probably nudge Ray to get time to research metabolism and nutrition as an AFAB PCOS person on T cause while I dont think we are doing this in an unhealthy manner (i refuse to force a hard set diet fu j that) it's weird doing this without Mr. Coach Who Over Researched Nutrition and Metabolism knowing the exact details
Honestly though, I might also just pick up UFC membership again solely for the community and focused training area
Thatd be at the expense of me doing Capoiera so I'd have to think on it but ya know
Maybe Ill do it for a few months to get back into it then swap over I dunno

THIS WHOLE TIME?!
Tumblr media
This meme encapsulates how I have been feeling about this research on medical weight loss. The whole it's not actually my fault because I was doing the right things all along is still something I am currently struggling to understand. Having my body work against me, having my family history work against me. Ughhhh its just a lot...
I have family members struggling with this right now. I have no grandparents left because of these diseases that come with being overweight. Although some of the research is triggering I'm glad to be doing it and so glad for all the people out there giving their first person accounts on how these meds are working for them.
Shout out to the Plus SideZ podcast. Those ladies are amazing!

Yale Scientists Discover Key Regulator of Body Weight
This is why just not eating all day then having ome big meal a day is not a good weight loss strategy. If Alpha augmentin is produced when you don't eat all day then snack in the evening or night then your body just stores all that as fat. Plus it doesn't do much for your metabolism. Best to have small meals throughout the day to keep Alpha augmentin low and your metabolism up.

Me: Exercise does not cause weight loss. This is a fact that has been demonstrated so robustly in research that even doctors, who hate and fear evidence, are grudgingly starting to admit this.
Someone reading that post: Cool, but have you considered that exercise leads to weight loss?
Me: I am going to eat you
