Im a man of my word.
DAY 1.
Although I'm writing this down, it's only a courtesy to any who may find this journal. Today Isn't something I think I'll ever forget.
We got lucky. Oh so very lucky. The trains were still running when I sent for Cattail and our colleauges in high society, most of them managed to make it out before the rings were declared a quarantine zone. That said, we didn't get everybody, and not nearly enough either. Cattail hasn't left the guest bedroom I lent him since he got here, he didn't have time to go back for Eden or his wife so I can hardly say I'd fare any better.
For some reason, Fossil stayed behind willingly, presumably to research and possibly find a cure. If anybody can do that, its her. Our communications were cut by rioters before she could fully explain.
We had no response from carrot.
DAY 20.
Theres nothing i can do from here except
Trek there by foot and lead my own rescue mission.
Push has advised against it... strongly...
I can't just leave them.
I have supplies for 2 months.
DAY 23.
Cattail was already packed when I went to tell him I was leaving. I wasn't able to convince him otherwise, but I won't deny I'm happy to have his help.
Cattail knows those outskirts better than anybody. I'm glad we're both omnivores.
Cattail and I fully planned this mission from top to bottom with 3 main goals in mind, save "Eden" and her best friend, dynamite, collect data on the situation, and find at least one sample to bring back.
I originally planned to set up more reliable contact with fossil as well, but Cattail decided traveling into high society would be too dangerous and limited me to as far as the middle ring. To be truthful, I was not expecting him to be this level headed, all things considered.
If possible, although dangerous, we will attempt to bring back other surviviors from the center ring as well.
DAY 24.
We set out for travel today, and, to go back on my word, we did not set out on foot.
Who doesn't love a good off-roading trip in a car that may-or-may-not belong to your boss?
DAY 26.
We can see the rings from here.
We will not be traveling to the center ring.
DAY 28.
We parked the jeep near the wall and decided to climb instead of using the main entrance to avoid rioters and a paniced mob, Cattail and I decided to split up for exactly 24 hours, and meet back here, I suggested it because I was worried Cattail wouldn't survive an encounter with whatever these things are.
DAY 29.
They got my fucking eye.
Excuse my profanity.
I managed 2 different samples
The first was by far less dangerous, I stalked one for about 4 hours, and managed to catch what seems to be some kind of maggot that fell off of it as it rounded a corner.
The second was stationary it was completley different than the first, with multiple roaming around it, almost gaurding it as i observed from the rooftop.
But even more worriesome were the "spikes", maybe "stingers"? Regardless, I watched a crow get a little too close, they both lunged at it midair and before long the crow was nothing but rotting flesh.
I should have backed down there, but I was determined, I took the crossbow from my bag, I only brought one bolt, not expecting this kind of foe. With two paper clips, a rubberband, and a long piece of stitching thread from the medkit I managed to create something extrordinary, a crossbow bolt with two paper clips on it. It was enough to get a small sample, so i don't think it mattered. I climbed down from the roof top, carefully avoiding the ones roaming around, and staying well out of reach of the stingers, I fired the bolt at the main structure, then yanked it back with the thread, as for how I lost my eye, every single one that was roaming around the structure made a beeline for mee as soon as the bolt hit the main structure. I "shelled up" a little too late. After attacking me for what seemed like years, the parasites eventually left me alone.
I'm never coming back here again.
DAY 30.
I didn't realize the full extent of the damage I took yesterday until i was done writing, they didn't just get my eye, they cracked the back of my shell aswell. I must have been in shock because this is incredibly painful. My shell has taken hits from bears, beastials, and once even a "false king" on my missions and never once has my shell taken any damage more than a scratch.
Cattail managed to find the two we came for, albiet not in the best state. Eden looked so different that i originally didn't recognize her, and not just in the maturity sense, she had apperently completely changed forms multiple times since I last saw her, I always assumed Cattail was exagerating, but this truly isnt normal even for her object type. I'll have to talk with her about that later.
We made it back to the jeep and from there we were home free, just a three day drive back.
DAY 32.
Those kids apperently worked up an appetite because we ended up having to forage multiple times. We packed for *two months* what happened to these two?
I tried making conversation, but all three of them seemed to be out of it, even more so than myself!
DAY 33.
It's worse than i thought
We arrived home and unpacked, but as soon as the two walked inside cattail pulled me aside and told me what had happened too them in such a short amount of time. How it spread so quickly terrified me, and i later checked the samples, which had both "died".
I feel horrible for not leaving earlier.
Its a lot harder than you'd think to write with one eye. I'll leave these three alone for awhile while i get my eye fixed, they need time.
DAY 34.
I got in contact with pin, and they respawned me in treatment as a quick fix as per push' suggestion. My eye was fixed but for some reason I still had all my scars and my shell had visible "fuse" lines.
When I asked about it they shrugged.
I need a better doctor.
Day 35.
I woke up in push' office, I talked with push in person, and she told me the goverment of reaching gardens is seizing my samples, but push should still have a say over what happens to them from her position.
I don't know what I was expecting really.
I'll stay with push for now, They need space.
DAY 36.
Who knew push could cook?
Anyway after we studied the sample all we could see was printer materials and not much else. Honestly if these things are made by terminals Fossil might actually have a chance, esspecially with carrot helping her! Luckily already cut off the terminals from the rings, we got readings they weren't functioning properly and cut the connection weeks before the outbreak. Who knows what would hablve happened if we didnt.
With just these two samples and limited knowledge om terminal coding and function, this is all the research we can do for now
DAY 37.
I asked cattail for updates today, and they had gone to court without telling me. Accirding to Cattail dynamite had snuck out shortly after i left and confessed to an officer, but all charges the were dropped as soon as they heard he was from the rings.
I can only imagine how guilty he must feel.
I began planning a second "rescue mission" with push. I may not enjoy it but I'm obligated regardless.
DAY 38.
Neither of us slept at all.
We're looking to rescue as many people as legally and physically possible but with our sparce resources the most we're looking at
Is two helicopters and a few ground vehicles.
I called shotgun
DAY 39.
With each passing minute i'm getting more and more anxious to leave. I won't let this situation progress any further.
Push managed to haggle the government into three times the resources if we bring back a live sample, but i have no idea how we'll make it into center ring let alone high society even with those resources.
DAY 40.
Everything is in place to leave
We're bringing extra food this time
Cattail decided to stay here with mushroom and dynamite after I urged him these resources were plenty and his help wasn't needed.
I may have been too harsh, I'm not good at lying.
DAY 41.
Writing [???] helicopter [???]
[??????]
they [???] really big tank
[????????????????]
DAY 44.
I apologize for my previous notes, the "tank" i mentioned is a glass tank they gave us last second for the live sample, its very small so I have no idea how we'll manage. Perhaps my eyesight hasn't fully recovered quite yet, but writing from a helicopter is surprisingly difficult.
The land party went in though the gate this time, they were armed, but for the most part it was seemingly empty.
This mission is going WAY better than last time so far, we're already just outside the center ring!
DAY 45.
Our radios picked up a short message,
But it went to static to quickly to understand or respond, they reffered to these things as "parasites" which seems much more accurate than "those things" so I'll use that from now on.
When we first got into the center ring, our windows fogged up completely, we actually had to land. typically the rings arent nearly this humid.
We decided to set up camp at the center ring, that way if things go south, we can too! So far, no survivors, we have gunned down about three of these things now, but we switched to a handheld flamethrower push brought (???) Because the noise was attracting parasites and possibly scaring off survivors.
That radio signal gave me an idea though
DAY 45.
Push's flamethrower has been incredibly effective at keeping them at bay while I broadcasted our location over the radio with a short message about the situation.
The first too arrive was a group of 5.
4 adults, one child.
When they arrived the set up their own section of camp without a word. One of them was severely injured, but we fixed him up ok. He'll live for now.
That kid and her chalk is getting pretty annoying.
DAY 46.
I suggested we move into high society but push was against it. Shes the one rrunning this mission so I couldn't really argue.
We had 2 seperate groups of survivors arrive today, but they seemed to know each other. Why is everything with these survivors so complicated?
The first too arrive were two girls that I was afraid to make eye contact with. They were a lot more talkative then the previous group, I explained that we were a rescue party from reaching gardens, they offered too help defend camp while we waited for more survivors.
The second group was much larger, and all three groups keep giving each other dirty looks. They all seem to know each other and not in a good way. Im debating leaving these guys if we get over crowded...
DAY 46
We were debating whether or not it was time to try and capture one alive when a smaller fellow wandered in, and I do mean wandered, he's the only one that not here from the radio signal.
We were warned by two of the previous groups about him, but not in any particular way, just that he was somehow more dangerous than he looked. With thise warnings in mind, I gladly put him in the tank. Temporarily of course. I picked him up with one hand to do so, I am unsure if this guy is dangerous in any way, but better safe than sorry...
DAY 47.
We were almost at max capacity and debating leaving and coming back later, when we were alerted by one of the pilots that something was coming, A massive horde of parasites was headed directly for us, but even more importantly just ahead of the massive horde was a jeep going faster than i have ever seen a jeep go.
Fossil you crazy bastard.
She made it too us well before the horde did, and we left immedeatly.
I avoided writing this one until we landed.
DAY 50.
We made it back, and with bullets to spare.
I was getting tired of gunshots.
We didnt manage to get a live sample though, so Push is about to have to pay so much money.
I kept that weirdo in the tank, maybe he's enough of a specimen.
DAY 51.
He was a specimen.
We scanned everybody for infectiom when we got back using an invention of fossils.
He was the only one who came up positive.
My luck has come though a suspicious amount of times now...
DAY 52.
That weirdo, "Wagyu" he said, is probably the strangest person I have ever met. Although, considering the circumstances, that does make sense.
From what we can tell, wagyu isnt infected quite like the others, for some reason, the thousands of parasites crawling all over him won't mutate him at all.

Note
all the qs you haven't gotten yet for the ship asks <3
Tumblr media
Questions from this post.
2. Who wakes up early/Who sleeps in late?
Sabrina is an early riser usually, oftentimes not getting that many hours of sleep in, especially when she's too wired and overthinking. Once they get together, she'd find herself sleeping in late, but still mostly waking up before John, and he gets grumpy if she doesn't wake him up. 🤣
7. How often do they say “I love you”?
Sabrina is generous with it, pretty open with how she feels because she knows time with the people you love is limited so she doesn't want to have regrets. John, on other hand is more selective about saying it.
9. What do they dislike most about the other? Why?
Sabrina: That he believes too blindly in Joseph and overlooks the danger it puts him in. She's straight up just worried.
John: How she disregards danger when it comes to herself especially if it means saving others.
11. How do they feel about nicknames/pet names? If they like them, what pet names do they use? If they hate them, why do they feel that way?
John calls Sabrina usually by her name for a good chunk of the story, then he'd sprinkle in "Butterfly" once he actually understands the meaning she finds behind the word. When he's trying to rile her up and just wants to see her get feisty, he'd call her Deputy.
And before that he'd call her Deputy to distance himself hence her subtle hate of the nickname.
I've been hitting a wall on coming up with a nickname she'd call him, like for the life of me I can't settle on anything that feels natural to her character.
12. Do they have a difficult time when separated from each other, or are they fairly independent?
I'd say it's 50/50 depending on the situation and distance.
13. How do they keep in contact when they’re apart? Do they write letters, talk on the phone, or simply wait out the time?
We all know John loves his radio calls, it's more hilarious when he does it but has no idea there are other people around her, poor Calahan will be sending him his therapy bill one day.
15. What songs remind you of their relationship?
It's kinda hard to narrow them down (the actual wip playlist is already so long), so I'm dropping two songs along with the story playlist.
Spiracle by Flower Face
And I want your parties, the shark in your water The scrapes on your knees and the blood that spills over And I want your zeroes, your polluted marrow The sweat on your palms and your surveillance shadow I want your secrets, your clementine fields The ropes that you climb up, the parts that won't heal I want your safe word, your passive resistance The sickness you foster, your favorite addictions
In Madness by Constance
In love and in madness In strength and in sadness When all of the world feels like its giving up on you Take what you have to But leave the hurt that they gave you Cause I see the dawn in you The light is breaking through
18. How do they care for each other when one of them is wounded/sick?
Sabrina would go all out and worry like crazy if he's hurt, when she's the one that's hurt, she'd try to assure him she's fine, minimize and attempt to do stuff herself, which irks him because he wants her to lean on him but she's too used to doing everything on her own for far too long.
20. How do they comfort each other when one of them is upset? Is this method of comfort effective?
Physical touch to ground each other, words of reassurance, trying to reach the other and pull them out of the dark place, etc.
21. Do they enjoy domestic life?
Yes, because for John it's something unexpected, while for Sabrina it's everything she's ever wanted, some normalcy in the chaos.
24. How do their personalities affect their relationship? Do their characteristics compliment each other, or clash often?
There are challenges, but I feel like they end up complimenting each other when it comes to personality. Sabrina grounds him, while John makes her feel seen and believed.
25. Do they share a room/house? If so, what does it look like and how does it compliment their personalities?
Sabrina and Savannah both stay at the ranch, at first sharing a room because Sabrina wants to make sure her sister is close by in case anything goes wrong. When Brin and John get together, she'd sleep in his bed. She's the one that usually keeps the place in order since he's very busy drowning people. 😂 Sabrina's personality: a home with cozy vibes, not messy or too flashy.
29. Describe their nighttime routine.
Dinner, usually made by Sabrina, John is allowed to help in the preparations, but with supervision, which Savannah finds absolutely hilarious. Making sure she goes to bed on time. Sitting by the fireplace, relaxing or lounging outside if the weather allows it, watching the stars, Sabrina would play her guitar/sing for John. Shower. 🤫 activities.
31. Do they often go out on dates? What are these like?
I feel like their dates wouldn't be considered very typical with the whole situation in the County. Their first date is John's idea after he finds out she: 1) has no idea how to fly a plane, 2) has fear of flying after the helicopter crash. He refuses to accept that and sets out on taking her out in a plane. Chaos ensues. 🤣
33. How do they flirt? Who’s the worse flirt?
Bantering back and forth. I'd say they're handling it fine. 😂
34. Do they have any inside jokes?
She jokes about the baptisms, "Oh, John" is a whole thing at one point. Enough said for now. 🫣
35. Is their relationship a secret? If so, why?
Mostly because of Joseph and the hell he'd raise about it. She's not part of the Project, nor does she believe in what he's selling, and the way he's going about it.
36. How do they feel about having kids? Are they in agreement?
They're both fine with it, though Sabrina hasn't thought about having kids on her own, especially with the Collapse looming over her future, her main focus has always been raising her sister and making sure she's happy and safe.
37. Who’s more emotionally sensitive/cries more often?
Neither, Sabrina cries mostly when she's absolutely overwhelmed or completely exhausted, otherwise she tries to hold it in, put on a smile and oftentimes minimizes her own suffering.
38. Who’s got a quicker temper?
John, without a question. Sabrina is pretty good at holding her composure.

So stay with me
Word count: 1957
Request: Yes
Genre: ANGST
Warnings: DEATH. SADNESS. Like there is literally no silver lining.
A/N I've done the foster system based off how it is where I live. I don't know what it's like for other countries so I apologise if it isn't quite the same for where you live :3 ALSO I'm going to put the request elsewhere because in order for the full unhappiness, you must experience it like this 😈
When you first entered the S.H.I.E.L.D training programme, you had been hand picked by Fury himself. You were bouncing from foster home to foster home at the time, causing general trouble by stealing, fighting and lashing out at anyone and everyone. You had no real direction. You knew you were most likely to end up on the streets - sure your social worker would still check in occasionally after you had aged out of the system but there were more and more kids being given up. Realistically, you knew you were on your own. When you reached 13 you knew that no one was going to adopt you. Especially when there were babies and young children available. Deep down, you had figured it out when you were around 9 but you clung to the naive hope that you were wrong.
~~~~~
Fury found you when you were 15 but didn't take you in until you were 17. It was the day after your 17th birthday when he turned up at your foster parent's door. He said he wanted to take you for a military programme and you packed your bag before he had even finished his speech.
You went through years of intense training and passed top of your class for everything. It was surprising considering you had never been first before. What was more shocking was the need for praise. You had always believed that you didn't need it. You had never had it before, so why is it a necessity. You realised how wrong you were when Maria took you to the side and told you that you had done well. The comment replayed in your head for months.
~~~~~
You were 23 when you first joined the Avenger's initiative. 23 when you first met Natasha. The two of you didn't hit it off to begin with, Natasha didn't like how reckless you were and you didn't like how far the stick was shoved up her arse. Truth was, you both liked each other a little more than just friends but neither of you knew how to deal with these emotions. Let's face it, Natasha grew up being told 'love is for children' and you grew up in the system where the cracks were so big elephants fell through them. The team could see it though.
"Just ask her out." Wanda told you while sitting on your bed painting her nails.
"Who?"
"You know exactly who. I can read your mind and your thoughts are very loud."
"No. Your information is wrong." Wanda grabbed your hand, painting the left one first.
"Y/n just ask Natasha out. She'll say yes."
"I hate her. We're enemies."
"Some say you have to love someone to hate them and besides" Wanda paused, gauging your reaction "You wanting to bend her over a table doesn't sound very enemy like."
Heat rose in your cheeks and you prayed nothing gave you away. "Untrue. I want to do that in an enemy way."
"Sureeee..."
From then on, you were extremely careful to keep your thoughts quiet. Especially when you had to watch Natasha train.
~~~~~
It was Natasha who asked you out. At first you thought she was joking and very nearly laughed but then you saw how she was standing, how she said 'will you go out with me' with such nonchalance that it was as if she was asking you to pass the ketchup. No one could be that cool and collected. It was the way she even played slightly with her fingernails that showed you she was nervous. You of course said yes.
That was the beginning of your relationship and you had been going strong for a good five years. The nausea and tiredness however, started three years into your relationship. Natasha used to joke that maybe you were pregnant when it had first started happening, the others laughing at even the thought of you cheating on Natasha. The jokes died down when after a month and a half of running to the bathroom, it finally affected your missions. You were sent right off to Dr Cho and no one would have anything else said on the matter. You had tried to fight them, of course - it really wasn't that bad. All you needed to do. was take some anti-nausea medication and you would be fine.
Leukaemia
You knew that one little word would do so much damage to your strange family if they ever found out. You sat in silence as you formulated a plan, Dr Cho just watching you, letting you process. What was the point in telling your family and causing them pain if the treatment plan Dr Cho had lined out for you worked? There wasn't. That's why you kept it a secret. Why you brushed off any comments about your increased nausea, or your lack of hunger. The only person who knew was Fury.
~~~~~
"Are you cheating on me?" Natasha had cornered you after a particularly tough session of chemotherapy. All you wanted to do was sleep.
"No. Why would you think that?" Words were hard to say when you had to put all your energy into just standing up.
"You go out at all times of the day and night, you're too damn tired to do anything and you never talk to me anymore Y/n... If you wanted to break up you didn't have to cheat."
You knew this day would come eventually. It was a year into your treatments and none of them seemed to be working. Natasha wasn't stupid. It's why you kissed her on the head and pulled her into the tightest hug you could muster.
"I would never do that. I love you Natasha Romanoff. I'll explain but let me get everyone here." You asked F.R.I.D.A.Y to call everyone down to the living room.
Once everyone was settled on the sofas and chairs, you sat on the coffee table, no longer being able to hold yourself up.
"I have leukaemia."
At first, you couldn't bring yourself to look at the others. You didn't want their pity but you knew they wouldn't be able to show anything else. You looked at Natasha first. You knew she wouldn't have a pitying look on her face.
You were right.
Natasha looked furious. How dare someone who didn't even want you in their lives give you a horrible disease. She knew your chances of survival weren't good but there were treatments that could help. She had more than enough money to get whatever treatment necessary.
Tony spoke first. "I'm going to my lab. FRIDAY, contact Dr Cho. I need Y/n's medical details."
Bruce followed quickly behind him. The others gave you sad but hopeful smiles. You couldn't bring yourself to tell them there was little hope.
~~~~~
Natasha had been gone on and off for 6 months. You knew your time was coming to a close but she still hadn't given up. She was always in some country following a lead for some experimental drug to try and cure you.
But there was no cure.
Not for this. Maybe one day there would be a cure, but not in your lifetime. The cure wouldn't be able to save you.
You were almost hesitant to let Natasha come back. It had been a while since she had seen you and now you looked like paper. You were thin and fragile and your skin had lost it's colour and took on a grey tinge. Your cheeks were hollow and your lips were constantly chapped and the only thing you could stomach were tiny meals and energy drinks.
You were dying.
Everyone had come to terms with it. Tony and Bruce never stopped trying to find a cure, it just wasn't for you anymore. Wanda tried her best to keep you as comfortable as she could with her powers and Steve would come and tell you stories of before he was put in the ice to entertain you. Clint would bring his kids until it got too painful for them to see you turn from the scariest, coolest person they knew into a hollow shell.
The only person who hadn't come to terms with it was Natasha.
"Nat she needs you." Steve told her when the team were all eating.
"I know. I really think this time this lead will be the one. Then she can be fixed and-"
"Natasha." Wanda cut her off, her voice dangerously low. She had heard this speech so many times that it was painful to hear it again. "She needs you. She's dying and you need to accept it. You don't have much longer left with her and you're abandoning her when you should be with her 24/7!" Wanda's eyes glowed slightly red as she thought of all the times she had to watch her best friend realise the love of her life wasn't there with her. The cutlery began to shake a little and something fell over in the kitchen.
The crash that you heard woke you up. Maybe it was Natasha. You hobbled out of what was supposed to be your shared room, and made your way to the kitchen. By the time you had reached the kitchen, everyone was fighting. There was food being thrown, knives being grabbed and glasses shattering everywhere. You just stood there as your best friend and your girlfriend attempted to kill each other.
"guys stop." Your throat hurt from hours of throwing up so your voice didn't carry.
"guys really..." You tried again, tears forming in your eyes. You didn't want to spend your last days watching your loved ones fight.
"FRIDAY tell them to stop. please."
"Miss Y/l/n would like you all to stop. Now."
Everyone turned to the doorway where you were standing, horrified that you saw them fighting.
"Y/n, you need to get to bed sweetie." Wanda walked over to you, wrapping her arm around your waist.
"Don't touch her." Natasha stormed over, taking your other side.
"Ladies there's no need to fight. You can share right?" You let out a soft laugh and watched as they both melted. Just because you were dying, it didn't mean you lost your sense of humour.
They both took you back to your shared room, Wanda leaving to give you and Natasha some privacy.
"Please don't go anymore." You laid with your head on Natasha's chest, her hand stroking your hair.
"But I'm so close. I can cure you Y/n."
"Natty please. I can tell I don't have much longer left and I don't know if I'll still be here for when you come back if you leave again."
"But I can't lose you." Natasha whispered, scared that if she spoke any louder, some other power would hear her and take you away from her too soon.
"So stay with me."
~~~~~
It was strange, you thought, lying on your bed; you had always thought you would die doing something spontaneous, or maybe in the field. Not because your cells were abnormal. Natasha had spent every moment with you since she returned 5 months ago. You had planned everything; your funeral, little messages to each of them, where to bury you. Everything was sorted. All that was left now, was to die.
It was an ordinary Wednesday afternoon when you felt the last drops of life drain from you. You knew it was time and so you turned to Natasha who had you wrapped up in her arms, placing a hand on her face, the rest of the Avengers all sitting there quietly.
“When the time is right, we’ll be together again. I’ll always be with you.” You then let your eyes drift shut, never to open again. Not in this world, anyway, but perhaps in the next.
A/N pt 2: NOOO BUT WHY AM I CRYING. THAT'S NOT THE RIGHT WAY AROUND. We've got some Peggy Carter fluff coming up soon tho :)
Also here is the request:
A Natasha x fem!reader. Reader was one of THE best shield agents and a great member of the avengers, but sadly had genetic cancer. After fighting for two years, with nausea, pain, and no improvement, reader knew she was dying. She didn’t want to admit it, especially after all the team has done to help her, especially her girlfriend, Natasha Romanoff. No amount of treatment or amount of money or technology Tony had was gonna save her. In the end, reader comes to terms with it. But Natasha doesn’t want reader to give up. Reader get through to Natasha that she wants to spend her last moments with her without putting more strain on her body. Natasha then comes to terms with it. Eventually, on readers death bed, surrounded by the rest of the avengers, Natasha is holding reader in her arms as reader says goodbye and looks to Natasha and says “When the time is right, we’ll be together again. I’ll always be with you” (GO NUTS AND MAKE IT ANGSTY)

Proposal Prep
5 times Carlos asks for permission to marry TK and the time he finally asks TK.
My second Tarlos fic, in a convenient 5+1 format!
Thank you to the wonderful Sarah for the beta, and thank you to Jae and Rae for cheerleading this fic (when I was starting and when I switched courses halfway through!)
Word count: 3264
***
1. Judd + Grace
“Are you sure I can’t help with anything?” Grace offered, watching intently as Carlos added the finishing touches to their dinner.
Carlos looked up owlishly. “No, it’s okay, thanks. Actually, it’s all ready. If you guys want to have a seat, I’ll finish bringing it all over.” He slipped on an oven mitt and paused, watching as Judd pulled out the chair for Grace and kissed her softly on the cheek before taking his own seat next to his wife.
“We waitin’ on TK?” Judd asked, noticing the table was missing a setting.
“Uh, no. He’s on shift until tomorrow morning.” Carlos forced a smile as he placed the serving platter in the middle of the table.  He was nervous, although he knew that was ridiculous. He’d been hanging out with the 126 since he and TK became a couple, and everyone had always supported their relationship. “But I wanted to talk to you guys about TK. About us.” He added, dishing up a large serving on each plate in lieu of making eye contact with his guests.
Grace took a small sip of her wine and exchanged glances with her husband. “So you thought you’d wine and dine the old married couple for relationship advice?”
Carlos’ eyes widened. “What? No! Of course not! I don’t need- I mean, we’re good. TK and I, we’re really good.” He took a large drink from his own glass before continuing. “In fact, I’m going to ask TK to marry me?”
He watched as Judd attempted to look surprised and Grace, usually always composed, let out the tiniest squeal.
“You done?” Judd huffed a laugh at his wife’s reaction and shook his head, turning back towards Carlos. “Well, are you askin’ us? Or tellin’ us?” he asked, sounding unimpressed.
“Judd!” Grace chastised.
“What? I ain’t said nothin’.”
“Um, asking,” Carlos piped up. He hesitated when both sets of eyes turned towards him and Grace cocked her head to the side. “Officially. I know I could just ask Owen, but that doesn’t seem right. You guys are all family.”
Judd nodded slowly, and Carlos let out a sigh of relief when a large grin spread across Judd’s face. “Hell yes! You two are always acting like lovesick fools. It’s about damn time!”
“Thanks, Judd.”
“Oh, on one condition.”
“What’s that?”
“You don’t ask me to be in it.”
Carlos and Grace laughed. “I think we can honor that,” Carlos promised. “But I will need your help if you’re up for it. I want to talk to Tommy and Nancy tomorrow morning. And obviously I’ll need someone to distract TK.”
“Hmmm. I’ll think of something.”
2. Tommy + Nancy
“Hey, Carlos.” Tommy smiled warmly as Carlos slipped into the fire station.  He had a drink carrier in one hand, and he gave a small wave with the other.
“Carlos!” Nancy popped her head out of the ambulance, her hands full of supplies. “You just missed your boy. Judd just pulled him out of here!”
“Yeah, that was intentional.” Carlos explained as he held the carrier out in offering. Tommy and Nancy each eagerly grabbed a cup and Carlos took the remaining cup and tossed the carrier in the bin.
“Okay, what’s going on, Reyes?” Tommy asked, sipping at the warm coffee. “This looks like a bribe.”
“I would just like to make it clear, that I’m okay with a caffeine-filled bribe. Especially at the end of a 24-hour shift.” Nancy piped up.
“Can we all talk? Maybe somewhere a little more discreet than your office?” Carlos tucked his hand into the pocket of his jeans and looked around furtively.
“Sure.” Tommy’s face turned from amusement to concern. She led the way upstairs, to the bunkroom the paramedics used on their overnights. It was smaller than the one on the firefighter side, but it was cozier. (Not that Carlos had snuck in there a time or two with TK or anything.)
Tommy and Nancy dropped into a bunk and Carlos slowly sat onto the one across from them.
“What’s up?” Nancy asked, eyeing Carlos carefully.
“So, TK and I have been together for a while and things are… well, kind of amazing. I still don’t know how we were lucky enough to find each other but I am so grateful for every day we have had together, and I want to make sure that we have many more of them.” Carlos looked around and then leaned forward, bracing his elbows on his knees. “Tommy, Nancy… I want to ask TK to marry me. And I want to know that you guys would be okay with it.”
“Carlos…”
“I know I don’t have to ask, but if I’m going to do this, I want to do it right. And you guys are family.”
“Dude, you can’t make me ugly cry this early in the morning! That’s like, the sweetest thing.”
“So they’re happy tears?”
Nancy wrinkled her nose and sniffled before nodding. “Can I give you a hug?” Carlos nodded and Nancy joined him on the bunk, wrapping her arms around him.  “I’m going to speak for us both,” Nancy began, “You have been so good for TK. He’s so…happy. When he’s with you, he knows he’s safe. We know he’s safe.”
“You know, Austin really isn’t that dangerous of a town.” Carlos chuckled softly at his lame joke.
“You know what she means. We know you’re not going to break his heart.” Tommy smiled.
Carlos took a moment to look both women in the eye. “I won’t. I promise.”
3. Gwyn
“Gwyneth Morgan speaking.”
Carlos took a deep breath, “Hey! Gwyn!  It’s Carlos.”
“Carlos?”
“Yes. Carlos… Reyes… Um, TK’s Carlos.”
He heard Gwyn’s flustered chuckle and a screech- courtesy of TK’s baby brother. Carlos winced, he had forgotten about the baby- and the slight time difference. “Right, Carlos! I’m sorry, it’s bedtime and a zoo around here.” There was a slight pause and a sigh. “What happened? Who’s hurt?”
“What? No! No, no. Everyone’s fine! TK and Owen are both- I’m sorry, Gwyn, I didn’t mean to worry you. They’re both fine.” Carlos groaned softly when he remembered part of the reason he had met Gwyn was after TK had been seriously injured. Admittedly, it was weird to be contacted out of the blue by your son’s boyfriend, he didn’t blame her for being worried.
“Good. I’m glad to hear that.”
Carlos paused and the awkward silence made his stomach flip. “So, I wanted to talk to you about something.” He stood, pacing back and forth in his living room.
“Okay…”
“You know, you’ve raised a good son. TK is smart, he’s funny, he has a gentle soul. He’s amazing. I honestly thought someone like TK only existed in my dreams.  Now that I have him, I know I don’t want to let him go.  Gwyn, I want to ask TK to marry me, and I want your blessing.”
“Oh… That is not what I was expecting. I, uh, have you talked to Owen yet?”
“No, not yet. I will, I just haven’t had the chance.”
Gwyn sighed. “Look, Carlos. I like you; I really do.  I have seen you two together, and I think you’re good for him.  You’re a good influence on my son. He has grown up a lot since he’s been in Austin, and I know that at least some of that is because of you.”
“But?”
“I just- he’s my son and I love him more than anything. Even when he makes it difficult. I need to know that you’ll do the same. You say you love him when he’s at his best. But I need to know you’ll love him at his worst.”
“Gwyn, I promise. TK is important to me, and so is his sobriety.  I will continue to support him in any way that I can. I believe in him. And I don’t want him to fall- but I assure you, if he does, I will always be there to catch him.”
“I know you will. And yes, Carlos, I would be honored to have you as a son-in-law.”
4. Marjan, Paul, & Mateo
“Alright! Here you go.” Carlos set a tray full of tacos on the table in front of the remaining members of TK’s firefam.  He wasn’t as nervous as he had been before talking with Judd and Grace, but Mateo was eyeing him suspiciously and that was putting him a little on edge.
Everyone grabbed a taco and ate in silence for a minute. Everyone except for Mateo, that is.
“Ohhh, these are delicious!” Paul grabbed another taco. “You’re not eating?” he nudged Mateo.
“This is weird. Why are we here?” Mateo asked, crossing his arms, “and where’s TK?”
“We can have lunch with our friend, Mateo, it’s okay.” Marjan paused and set her taco back onto her plate. “But it is a little weird. You two are usually joined at the hip. What’s going on?”
“I wanted to talk to you guys. About me,” he shrugged, “and TK.
“I knew it. There’s something going on. You’ve been acting weird.” Mateo accused.
“I have not!”
“You have been acting a little weird.” Paul confirmed.
“You’re breaking up, aren’t you?”
“What? No! Mateo, we’re not breaking up.”
“Yes. This is exactly what happens when parents get divorced, and then the kids have to decide who they’re gonna live with and who they’re gonna spend holidays with.” Mateo crossed his arms and leaned on the table. “Well, I’m sorry Carlos, but TK is like a brother to me. If you dump him, you’re gonna lose us all. Right, guys?”
Marjan sighed and wrinkled her nose. “Are you done?” she asked Mateo. Turning to Carlos she shrugged, “But he has a point.”
“No! That’s not- I didn’t bring you here for that, I swear!” Carlos looked at each of them in turn and he had to bite back a smile. As obnoxious as this was becoming, it made his heart happy to hear how fiercely they were willing to protect TK. He glanced back at Paul.  Paul hadn’t taken his eyes off Carlos, watching his reactions very carefully.
“They’re not breaking up.” Paul piped up.
“Thank you!”
“They’re getting married!” He added slowly.
Carlos nodded. “I’ve known you for years and it’s still creepy when you do that.”
“What? You proposed and didn’t tell us?” Marjan pouted.
“No! Not yet! But that’s why I brought you here. To tell you. Well, to ask you. TK is your family, you all just proved it. So, I’m asking your permission to ask TK to marry me.”
Paul cocked his head to the side. “Huh. I didn’t see that coming.”
“Oooh something you couldn’t predict?” Marjan teased before turning back to Carlos.  “You’re really asking us?”
“I am.”
“Hmmm.”
“Hmmm? What kind of answer is that?” Paul asked. “You know what? Yes. Carlos, yes. What you two share is beautiful and I, for one, can not stand between that.”
“Thanks, Paul.” They both looked at Marjan and Mateo expectantly.
After a few long moments, Marjan let out a whoop. “Carlos, Paul’s right, we can’t say no.  We’ve seen you two together and you two are already way too much like a married couple. Just make it official, please.”
“Thanks, Marj. Mateo? Thoughts?”
“Yeah, that’d be cool, I guess.”
“Way to sound excited.” Marjan gave him a little nudge. “What’s up?”
“Are you guys gonna have kids and forget about us?”
“What kind of question is that?” Paul rolled his eyes.
“No. I mean, yes, we’ve talked about kids, Mateo. But it’s not something we’d do right away. And we’ll still be around to hang out with you guys. We won’t abandon the 126.”
 “Promise?”
“I promise.”
Mateo nodded. “Alright. Go ahead.”
5. Owen
“Hey, Carlos! Come in. You didn’t have to knock, you used to live here. Don’t you still have a key?” Owen said as he pulled open the door and then stepped aside, closing the door once Carlos had moved past him.
“Oh, yeah, I didn’t think about it.”
“Well, come on. Do you want something to drink?” Carlos followed Owen to the kitchen and leaned heavily against the counter.
“No, thanks, Owen. I don’t want to take up too much of your time, but I just wanted to talk to you.”
“Sure, Carlos. Have a seat. Is everything okay?”
Carlos nodded as he dropped into the chair opposite of Owen. “Yes. Everything’s fine. I don’t want to take up too much of your time, I know you have a shift in a bit, so I’m just going to get to the point.  I’d like to ask your permission to ask TK to marry me.”
“You know, I remember the day TK brought his ex, Alex, home.”
“Sir?” Carlos had heard a few Alex stories, all from TK’s point of view, but he was morbidly curious what the elder Strand thought of TK’s ex.
“We had dinner, takeout from somewhere. Alex was nice, polite. It was relatively un-remarkable.  So he leaves, and TK asks me what I think.”
“You didn’t like him?”
“I didn’t.” Owen confirmed. “Anyway, TK asks what I think, and I tell him.  I tell him that I don’t think Alex is right for him, and honestly, I think he knows it too.  I also tell him that when he finds the right person, he’s gonna know it and he’s not gonna care what I think.”
Carlos nodded slowly. He felt like he knew where Owen’s story was going to go, but really wished Owen would put him out of his misery.
“So, we move here and fast forward to a year or so ago. You two had only been official for a few weeks. It was the night you joined us for dinner at the firehouse before your shift.  TK walks you out and he comes back into the kitchen, and I tell him that I like you. I think you’re a good fit.  And TK, he gives me this shit-eating grin and tells me he’s glad I like you but that he doesn’t care what I think.”
Carlos laughed. “Yeah, that sounds about right.”
“Carlos, he is so happy when he’s with you. I see the way he lights up when you walk into a room. This move to Austin has been healing for him, and I know you’re a large part of that.  I just want what’s best for him, and I’ve seen you enough to know, that’s you.”
“Gwyn pretty much said the same thing.”
“It’s true. But you knew I was going to say yes, right?”
Carlos chuckled, “I had assumed that, yes. But it’s still nice to hear.  Thank you.”
“You’re welcome. Just promise me you two won’t go elope or anything like that. TK’s mother will kill me if she doesn’t get to watch her son get married.”
“I cannot promise that. But no matter where or when, I promise that you and Gwyn will both be invited.”
“Good enough. Thank you, Carlos.”
+1 TK
Carlos hummed to himself as he checked the food he had in the oven. TK would be home any minute and tonight was the night. It had been a week since he’d talked with Owen and the firefam was getting impatient. He fielded at least one text from Nancy every shift after TK would show up sans ring, sometimes Paul and Marjan would join in. Grace had taken over as unofficial wedding planner and occasionally sent him color schemes and venue ideas- and he didn’t know how long he could keep hiding his messages from TK.
His phone beeped and he glanced at it, groaning a little when he saw Nancy’s name flash on the screen.  “Tonight, Nance, I promise! I’m doing it tonight!”
“Um, hey listen, so TK’s okay- he’s fine! But we’re at Austin General.”
Carlos paused and he realized his hands were shaking slightly as he reached out to turn the oven off.  “So when you say fine…”
“He’s fine, I promise! I’m certain he’s going to need a few stitches, but really, on the scale of TK’s injuries, this is nothing to worry about.” Nancy tried to explain. “He’s asking for you.”
“I’m on my way” he promised. Carlos grabbed his keys and headed out the door.
***
“Hey, baby.” Carlos paused at the foot of TK’s bed. His boyfriend looked fine.  There weren’t any obvious injuries, but the fact they hadn’t released him was still causing Carlos a little anxiety.
“I’ll leave you two alone.” Nancy stood and gave TK’s arm a little squeeze. She paused as she passed by Carlos. “I think the tie’s a little much,” she whispered, giving the offending silk a playful tug.
“Go on, get out of here.” Carlos made his way to the seat Nancy had vacated.   “Hey, you okay?” Carlos gently smoothed TK’s hair back and kissed the top of his head.
“Yeah.” TK gestured to his leg. “It’s just a few stitches, nothing to worry about. They’re just keeping me overnight to monitor for infection. Um, why are you all dressed up?” TK chewed on his bottom lip. “Did you have something planned?”
“Huh? Oh, yeah. I didn’t change after Nancy called me. I just came straight here.”
“I’m sorry. I told her to tell you I was fine and not to worry.”
“She did. And I worried anyway.”
TK chuckled, “Carlos, I-”
“TK, the thought of losing you makes me crazy.”
“Ohhh, babe. I’m not going anywhere. I promise.” TK reached out and gently caressed Carlos’ cheek. “Which, I know that would sound a lot more comforting if I wasn’t currently in a hospital bed.” Carlos caught TK’s hand and turned his head, pressing a kiss to his palm.
“No, I know. I just- I guess what I was saying is…” Carlos paused, wondering how actually crazy he was to still be considering proposing under the circumstances.  “Marry me, TK, please?”
TK gave Carlos a puzzled look. “Is that really what you were going to do tonight? This isn’t some knee-jerk reaction to this?” he gestured vaguely around the hospital room.
Carlos swallowed hard and nodded, pulling the small, velvet box from his pocket.  “I’ve been planning for weeks. I asked your dad. And Gwyn. And, um, everyone else.”
“Everyone?”
“Judd, Grace, Tommy, Nancy, Paul, Mateo, Marjan… The whole crew.”
“You really did all that for me?” TK’s eyes lit up.
“Yes, and they all said yes faster than you are.  Also, I think Grace has already started making plans, so she’s going to kill you if you don’t say yes.”
“Carlos! Of course the answer is yes!” Carlos leaned in and wrapped his arms around TK, giving him a tight squeeze. TK tipped his head up for a kiss and Carlos obliged, keeping it short and sweet, considering their current location.  Carlos plucked the ring out of the box and slipped it onto his fiancé’s finger.
TK shifted to the side and patted the bed next to him.
“No, TK.”
TK looked up at Carlos, his eyes wide and innocent as he tapped the bed again. “Come sit.”
“You’re gonna get me kicked out of the hospital.” Carlos mumbled as he sat on the edge of the bed. “And then you’ll have to spend your first night engaged alone.” Carlos toed off his shoes and settled himself on the bed, carefully, and TK tucked himself into Carlos’ side.
“Even if we have to spend tonight apart, we’ll have plenty more nights together.”
“A lifetime of them.” Carlos promised.

“Spencer, the last two times that I’ve seen you, we’ve sat in silence,” the doctor pointed out, obviously annoyed that her patient, who ironically enough had more PhDs, was wasting their time. “I know it’s hard to start, but the best place to, is from the beginning.”
“Y/N. Their name was Y/N.” This was the first time Doctor Fredricks heard Spencer say anything besides their usual before meeting greetings, and after meetings scheduling. “I heard it all, you know?”
“Heard what, Spencer?”
“Everything.”
“Spencer, I promise you I am getting in the car now. You’ll get to see me in 15 minutes,” you laughed into the phone at your very impatient boyfriend.
“Actually, I’ll see you in 17 minutes and 42 seconds give or take traffic patterns and how awful your first attempt at parking is.” It had been exactly 9 days 7 hours 24 minutes and 43 seconds since you last saw Spencer, and he wasn’t the one counting down by the second this time.
“Hey!” You barked right back. You weren’t the greatest parker in the world, but there was no need to mention it. “I could walk and skip the parking altogether.”
“No,” he whined, growing more impatient by the second. “That’ll take you an hour, and it’s been enough time since I got to see you. Please love bug, I take back the parking comment.”
“Alright, alright, alright. You’re getting off the hook...” you said as you put the key in the engine, but before you turned the car on, you mumbled, “this time.”
“I heard that!” You couldn’t stop the guilty giggle from escaping your throat and into the speaker of the phone. “Did I just hear your car turn on? I’m hanging u-”
“No, sh. I’m putting you on speaker. Don’t worry, doctor. I’m not on my phone while driving.” Of course Spencer would be nervous about you being distracted by anything while driving, he had the statistics lodged in his brain about car accident deaths.
“Did you know that roughly 1.35 mi-”
“Million people in the US die on the road with an average of 3,700 per day? How could I forget?” You cut him off, hearing this rant every time you went to change the station on your car radio.
“You’re on speaker, and I’ve been driving for 2 minutes already. I think I’ll be fine for the next 15, I promise.” You both knew it was ridiculous to stay on the phone as you headed over to his apartment. It was like the two of you couldn’t wait another second without the other, and thankfully modern technology granted you both that.
“It’s dangerous, love bug, and you know it.” Spencer just would not give up, would he? You’ve had your license for over a decade, and yet he held onto the handle next to his window as if he was your mother teaching you to drive for the first time whenever he was in the car with you. “Plus you speed.”
“What can I say? I like to live on the danger side. Plus do you really want to talk about car deaths, or can I yell at you for insulting my driving TWICE now,” you joked, feigning offense to Spencer’s truthful mean comments about your driving.
“I would much rather talk about how much I missed you,” he sweet-talked to you. While it was cute and all, you knew it was just so you would immediately forget about his little backhand driving comments.
“I missed you, too, my love.” Of course it worked. It was Spencer Goddamn Reid.
“How much longer?” The tone of a little boy in a candy shop whose parents just said no to pounds of sugar returned. You smiled and shook your head to yourself.
“According to maps, 13 minutes.” You let your mind wander as you stared out into the road ahead of you. How did you get so lucky with Spencer?
The day you two reached for the same book in a small library that was almost hidden to the street outside was the best day of your life. You and Spencer talked for hours about Emily Dickinson, other authors, composers and personal lives. It felt natural to spend time with him, and if you could, you’d spend every waking moment with him. That day, you hadn't even realized that 5 hours had passed, nor did you realize you never asked for his name in that amount of time.
“Don’t speed, but hurry up...please.”
“Spencer, how am I supposed to do those things at once?” The light turned red before you could run it, adding at least another 30 seconds before you got to see him.
“I’m 11 minutes away. The lights in this city just su-” You never got to finish your sentence, because the car behind you forgot to stop.
Your head shot forward, hitting the top of the steering wheel as your car and the pick up truck coming at you at 40 miles an hour made impact. Your car had involuntarily skidded in the middle of the intersection. Thankfully, however, it wasn’t a busy one.
“Y/N! Y/N, are you okay?!” You hadn’t registered Spencer’s insistent yelling through the speaker in your phone until the ringing in your eyes subsided to a small dull.
“Y-Yeah,” you croaked out. “Some ass just hit me from behind.”
That’s when you looked to the left of you.
They say when people die, they see a white light at the end of a tunnel, but you saw two. You saw two headlights coming in your direction at a speed that you knew was impossible to stop. The weight the truck carried along with the amount of force used to halt the tires in their place made it so that the driver had no choice.
“You know I love you, Spencer. I love you so much.” You stared death in the eyes, it coming in the form of yellow lights and a blaring horn you knew Spencer could hear on the other end.
“Y/N, I-”
“I never got the chance to actually say it back.” Spencer finished recollecting your death, something he only did in the comfort of his home, alone with nothing but the silent sobs that raked through his body.
“Spencer, you don’t have to tell me for me to know that you blame yourself,” Dr. Fredricks spoke calmly, too calm for Spencer’s liking. He had just told her about the worst moment of his life, and she still held the same tone as if she was saying see you next week.
“How could I not?” He started to get more upset by the second, his voice rising in volume and his body leaning forward. “How do I sit here, and not blame myself? I called them that day. I was the one that rushed them. Me, no one else, but me!”
“Were you driving either cars that hit them?” Spencer knew what she was doing. Dr. Fredricks was trying to get him to admit it wasn’t his fault, so instead of giving in, he stayed silent. She sighed before continuing.
“You need closure, Spencer. The wound is still so fresh that it will never start to heal if you don’t let it.” At this, Spencer sat back and fiddled with his fingers.
She was right. He needed to start healing instead of ripping the wound farther across this heart, cutting deeper each time.
“That’s all the time we have for today. You’ve made great progress this week, and I hope that we can follow that pattern next week as well.” Spencer smiled down at his therapist as he stood up to walk out.
“Oh, and Spencer,” Dr. Fredrick called out. He stopped and turned, expecting a reminder he didn’t need for next week’s time.
“Their last words were I love you. Don’t ever forget they meant it.”
Spencer finally let a tear run down his cheek, the first time he cried in front of anyone after your death.
He nodded before walking out onto the busy DC street. As he was walking, Spencer took out his phone, flipping it between hands, contemplating his next move.
‘Closure, Spencer. You need closure.’ He kept repeating in his mind.
Finding a bench, he sat down to search his contacts for the one name he couldn’t bring himself to delete.
Before Spencer could rethink his next move, he made it, pressing the call button. The phone didn’t even ring, it just went straight to voicemail.
‘Hey! Sorry I missed you, I’m probably asleep. Leave a message, but I can’t promise I’ll listen to it. Bye!’
“Hey, love bug.”

Hope on Board
Chapter 25 – Out of Time
Chapter 1     Chapter 24
Dick woke up to a far too early knocking, more like pounding, on his door.  He and Jim Gordon had been up half the night talking about the corruption in the police force and whether Dick should join, before deciding he could make a difference if he did.  He would be able to help Jim slowly weed out the corruption if he was working with him from the inside.  They’d even filled out all his applications for the Police Academy, starting in a month. He would have to be away from Marinette and the twins during the day, but he would be able to come home to them every night.  If she let him.  And she would know where he was.
But all that talk meant he had only gotten a few hours of sleep last night and he was dead tired this morning.  He really just wanted to go back to sleep, but the pounding on the door continued unabated.  He groaned and made his way to the door.  “Answer your damn phone, asshole,” Jason growled at him, pushing past him to look around the room.  “We’re fucking thrilled if you and Pixie got back together, but let us know you both aren’t dead.”
Dick shook his head and scrunched his face in confusion. “That we’re what?  I haven’t gotten to talk with Marinette yet.  I’m hoping that’s how it will go, but I think that’s probably overly optimistic.”
Jason’s expression turned in an instant from annoyed to scared.  It was not a look he was used to seeing on Jason’s face.  Jason never got scared, or if he did, he never showed it.  “Pixie is here, right?” he asked again, enunciating each word clearly.  “She’s with you.”
“No…  I just woke up.  I was talking with Commissioner Gordon all night.  Why would you think she was with me?” Dick shook his head again, trying to make sense of what he was saying.  Had Marinette planned on meeting him here?  Maybe she came back and fell asleep.  He ran to her bedroom to check, but the room was exactly as it had been for the past few weeks.  No sign of Marinette.  He returned to the living room and shook his head.
“Shit!”  Jason looked around desperately.
“Tell me what is going on right now.  Why did you think Marinette was with me?” Dick asked carefully.  His breathing became strained.  This isn’t the way this was supposed to go.  He had saved her.  He had stopped the Court of Owls.  He stopped their plot.  She was safe.
Jason pulled out his phone and called Tim, talking as he did, without bothering to acknowledge Tim when he answered and putting him on speaker as soon as he did.  “She’s missed all her appointments today.  Adrien said she said she was going to talk with you today.  She isn’t in Adrien’s apartment or Wayne Enterprises. Her phone is in her studio, but she isn’t,” Jason answered slowly, eyes darting around as if calculating something. “We figured she must be here.”
“We didn’t set the time yet.  I haven’t heard from her.  When was the last time someone saw her?” Dick asked frantically, running to his bedroom to start getting dressed.
“I’m going to start going through security footage around Adrien’s apartment and her studio,” Tim reported.
Jason’s phone started flashing with another call. “Patching Adrien into the call too,” he informed them and pushed a few buttons to enable it.  “Adrien, tell me you have something.”
Adrien’s voice hesitated for a moment.  Dick and Jason shared an apprehensive look.  “I have something, but it’s bad…  Someone told me you’d know how to get in contact with Batman?”
Jason froze and looked up at Dick with a panicked expression.  There was no way that was good.  “I think we might have a way to contact Batman, why?”
“I know where she is, but we’re going to need Batman and his team to get her back.”  There was barely a quiver to Adrien’s voice as he spoke, but years of training made it come across as clear as glass to the others on the call.
“Where is she?” Dick yelled into the phone.
“Dick?  They don’t have you?  That’s good… I guess.  It means they only wanted her… Actually, no, wait, maybe that’s worse,” Adrien prattled.
“Who is they?” Dick demanded.
“Some people with owl masks.”  There was a hedge in his voice as though he didn’t think they would believe him.
Dick stopped breathing.  The Court had taken Marinette.  No, no, no, no.  He had stopped them.  He had made sure Marinette was safe.  He had protected her from them.  That’s what the past few months of hell had all been about.
“You can get ahold of Batman, right?” Adrien asked again, in a more strained voice.  “I know someone who’d like to talk to him.”
Jason furrowed his brow and looked to Dick to see if he had any ideas.  “Who?”
“Chat Noir.”
Jason looked at Dick communicating their intentions and agreement through minute body quirks and purposeful looks.  “We can get ahold of someone.  We will make sure someone is on the top of the Wayne Enterprises building in half an hour.  Is that enough time for him?”
“He’ll be there,” Adrien confirmed confidently.
Jason cut Adrien’s connection and glared at the floor in thought.  “Why would they want Marinette?”
“The plot you stopped was all about the power grid, wasn’t it?” Tim interjected.  “Trying to run up prices for some of their members who owned supply and power companies?”
“Yeah…” Dick answered uncertainly.
“Then there was no reason for them to be at the Stone concert, right?  Those execs were from Netflix, no way associated with this,” Tim elaborated.
Dick drew in a deep breath and cursed.  “They were there watching Marinette.  They were planning this all along.  They wanted Marinette from the beginning.  Why?”
“Everyone go get suited up.  Get there as soon as possible.  I’ll text the others,” Jason stated, moving quickly toward the door so he could get to his apartment.
<><><><><>
Batman, Red Robin, Signal, and Red Hood made it to the rooftop with time to spare, since they were already close to their costumes. Nightwing, Black Bat, Spoiler, and Robin had further to go to get to their costumes and had to trickle into the meeting, but they kept track of the conversation through the coms until they could be there in person.
“Chat Noir.” Batman stepped forward and nodded.
“Batman.  Bats and Birds.” Chat Noir nodded to Batman and the rest of the bats.  “I was thinking there would be more.”
“They’re on their way but listening in,” Batman assured him briskly.  “Let’s start with how do you know where she is?”
Chat looked over to the edge of the building at the sound of two sets of boots landing, he continued to speak as he silently acknowledged Nightwing and Robin.  “I’ve been keeping a close eye on Marinette since the pharmacy incident.  You might say I’ve had a catbug on her… with her permission of course.  She sent the scout to find me when she thought they were in her final location.  They didn’t seem interested in immediately harming her or the scout would have stayed.  We have time, I just don’t know how much.”
“Do you know how she was taken?” Batman asked.
Chat nodded, annoyance settling in his expression as he did. “A couple men dressed as cops approached her at her studio and said something happened to Dick, her boyfriend… kind of… it’s complicated.  She went with them.  By the time she figured out they were not headed to the hospital, there was a knife digging into her bump.”
“Any ideas on why they took Pi… her?” Red Hood broke in.
“They said something about a Grayson, so I have to imagine it’s to get at Dick Grayson, the babies’ father, for some reason or to get her twins perhaps for ransom.  I don’t suppose you have any ideas why they would want to get back at Dick, would you?  Is he a member?  Did he double cross them?” Chat mused.
“What?” Nightwing exclaimed.  “No!”
“Well…” Spoiler hedged as she and Black Bat landed.
“Dick Grayson didn’t do anything to them,” Nightwing gritted out.
Chat Noir studied Nightwing carefully then suddenly whipped his head over to Red Hood, running his eyes over him in a calculated manner and moving quickly to do the same to Red Robin.  “Fuck.  That’s why he said you guys would know how to get in contact with Batman.  That’s why you’ve been disappearing.” He stuck an accusatory finger in Nightwing’s direction.  “Why the fuck didn’t you just tell her that, you fucking dumbass!”
“See!  Even the catman agrees.” Red Hood exclaimed.
“She wasn’t supposed to get stressed and I didn’t want her knowing I was putting my life in danger every night, constantly,” Nightwing attempted to defend himself, but even to himself, his voice sounded unsure.
“She put up with me for years.  She is perhaps the world’s foremost expert in dealing with idiots who constantly put their lives in danger,” Chat exclaimed exasperated.  He had to have known that.  Marinette had talked to him about how frustrated she had gotten with Chat.  Hell, he was there for some of those conversations with Dick, while she glared at Chat the whole time.
“You think memories of that didn’t add stress?” Nightwing exploded, stalking slowly toward Chat as he spoke.  “She still has nightmares about it.  And pregnancy hormones make nightmares even more realistic. You weren’t there almost every night when she woke up crying because she saw you sacrificing yourself in new ways or when she dreamt it was me instead of you.  And the last one she had before our fight…  She sobbed almost nonstop for almost an hour.  I was terrified for her.”
“And you weren’t there when she was sobbing because you said you loved her then ran away like she didn’t matter,” Adrien returned just as angrily, standing his ground against Nightwing.  “Or when she broke down because she couldn’t trust you anymore. Because you spent months lying to her. Not because you had a secret. Secrets she understands, intimately. Because she trusted you and you lied and without an explanation, she had to assume you lied about everything.”
“I was protecting her from the Court of Owls,” Dick yelled.
“So that’s what the cult is called?  Bang up job, there.”  Chat growled back.  He moved away to collect his thoughts and deescalate the situation.  Fighting now wouldn’t help Marinette.  They needed to work together to rescue her.  Finally, he sighed and rubbed his hand across his forehead like he was trying to ward off a migraine.  “She owes me a hundred euros for this.  So, what’s these guys’ deal?  Do they know who you are or are they asking for ransom?”
“We don’t think they know who he is, but ransom isn’t really their deal either,” Red Robin answered.
“Why would they want her otherwise?” Signal asked.
Chat opened his mouth a few times before cocking his head to the side and furrowing his brow and grimacing as if trying to figure out how to say what he was thinking.  “Could they know about… her association with the Paris heroes?”
“What exactly is her association with them?” Batman asked
Chat opened his mouth and closed it quickly.  “That sounds like a question for Marinette.”
“Well she isn’t fucking here is she?” Red Hood pointed out curtly.
“Close.  Very close,” he answered carefully.
“Clearly,” Spoiler huffed motioning to Chat.
“Closer than that.” He grimaced.  He was definitely skirting the line of flat out telling her secrets, but if it saved her babies, he was sure she would be okay with it. He just wasn’t sure yet if it actually related at all.  “But I don’t know how they could have found out.  She hasn’t been around any costumed heroes in years.”
“And they said this was about Grayson,” Robin pointed out.  “It is far more likely they know Grayson’s identity and this is punishment for stopping them.”
“If they’ve been tracking her since the concert, maybe earlier, it isn’t just about ruining their plans,” Red Robin clarified.
“They were doing what?” Chat’s head whipped around to look at him.
“I saw a talon at the Stone concert.  That’s why I disappeared.  I was investigating,” Nighwing explained distractedly.  “We can figure out the reason later.  Let’s focus on freeing her, making sure she’s okay.  You said you know where she is.  She’s probably terrified, and she doesn’t need more nightmares.”
“Yeah, she’s being held under here,” he pushed a few buttons on his baton and sent the location to the Bats.
“How did you do that?” Signal asked with amazement in his voice.
“Magic,” Chat answered, flaring out his fingers.
“So what’s the plan?” Stephanie asked.
“Oracle do you have the building layout?” Batman asked into the coms.
“I’m having trouble getting in.  It looks like they have several layers of security and self-contained power.  It might take me a bit,” Oracle responded.
“We wait to see if we can get insight into the building then create the plan.  Our tech person is having difficulty getting in,” Batman stated so Chat could hear.
Chat nodded and teetered back and forth from his toes to his heels, anxiety ramping up in the silence.  “So, any tips or tricks I should know before fighting these guys, if that’s what’s happening?”
“The guys with glowing yellow eyes are highly trained. The rest will try to kill you, but they’re like drunken toddlers, it’s the yellow eyed bastards you have to watch out for,” Red Hood answered as he leaned against the half-wall running along the edge of the building.
“They’re not drunken toddlers.  They’re dangerous too,” Batman emphasized affronted.  He’d fought those guys in a group.  They had almost overpowered him.
“Okay fine,” Red Hood waved him off, “but not like the talons.”
“Any weaknesses for those yellow eyed talon guys?” Chat asked apprehensively.
“Not really.  They’re highly trained, highly skilled, superhuman speed, superhuman healing,’ Nightwing answered.
“Fuck,” Chat answered with a whistle.
“Appropriate response,” Red Robin nodded.
“They need a substance to keep healing,” Batman corrected.
“So if we injure enough of them they won’t have enough substance for everyone?” Chat offered.
“Not the route I want to go, but yeah,” Signal agreed.
“And cold.  They’re susceptible to cold,” Batman added.
“Cold?” Chat clarified, suddenly listening very intently.
“Yeah, it interferes with their healing,” Red Hood explained.  “Makes it so their injuries stick.”
“So if we could make it freezing cold down there…” Chat trailed off.
“Doesn’t have to be the whole place, just where the talons are,” Red Robin mused out loud.  “There likely won’t be many, if any.  They can’t be expecting us yet.  They were too careful.  If it wasn’t for Chat’s scout, we’d have no idea.  But yes, if you can make them cold, we’d have a better chance.”
Chat stopped and looked contemplative for a few moments. “Let me make a quick call.”  He turned around and walked a few steps away. After a few minutes he returned. “Snowflake will be here in 35 minutes.”
“The ice chick from New York?” Red Hood asked.
Chat nodded in response.  Damian eyed him suspiciously.  “That’s awfully quick.”
“She’s going to catch a ride with Uncanny Valley and Uncanny will be able to hack into their security as soon as she gets here.  She just has to be close.  We can get the plans from her and break into their security system.”
“How can she do that?  No offense to your friend, but if Oracle can’t do it, it’s unlikely anybody else would be able to so quickly,” Red Robin asked.
“Thank you,” Oracle cut in.
“Uhhh… magic?”  Chat offered with less enthusiasm than before.
“Let’s move to a closer position while we wait.  We’ll come up with a plan once we have more information,” Batman said already taking out his grappling hook.  “We have family to save.”

Hi, I love your work. I hope you doing well. I was wondering if you have time and feel inspired would you be able to write an Amlink fanfic where Amelia and Link go away for the weekend or for work and they meet Amelia sisters.
Thanks,❤️😊😊
new beginnings
a/n: hi! thank you for the prompt and I hope you enjoy it!
--------------------------------
"You wanna find someplace to sit?" Link laughed slightly, placing his hand on the small of Amelia's back as she gained her footing. She glanced back at him and narrowed her gaze. "What? You did last time, and you're looking a little out of it right now."
"Maybe just head back to the room," she muttered, rubbing her forehead. "In conclusion, sound baths mess me up." He grinned and guided her down the hallways of the hotel containing the different conference rooms. "When's your thing again?"
"Tomorrow. You've got time to recover." Amelia sighed and leaned her head against his shoulder, Link's arm wrapping around her waist and supporting the weight of her body. "You look like you're gonna pass out." He watched as she shook her head.
"I'm fine-"Amelia's eyes widened dramatically as she stopped talking, and Link followed her gaze.
"Amelia?" Her body tensed as Nancy approached them, her arms outstretched to hug her sister. Link stepped away as she wrapped her arms around Amelia. "What are you doing here?"
"I-uh-Link's giving a presentation, what-uh-what are you doing here?" Nancy turned and eyed Link before holding out her hand. He shook it.
"Nice to see you," he muttered, pursing his lips in a tight smile.
"Likewise," she smiled, retracting her hand. "Liz and I needed an excuse to get out of town, and this counts as a work trip. You're giving a presentation?" She directed her question towards Link, nodding her head.
"Yeah, tomorrow. On the dangers of dependency and how physicians can take better steps to prevent it with their patients," he smiled politely.
"Where's Liz? You're sure Kathleen isn't with her, too?"
"We invited her, but she couldn't come. We should get dinner tonight."
"Yeah, so it can go like last time," Amelia shook her head. "I think we're good." Nancy reached out a hand to Amelia's shoulder.
"It won't, as long as you're not lying about who he is, but we already went through that." Amelia grimaced slightly, some of the tension in her face relaxing as Link placed his hand on her back.
"We're supposed to meet a friend of mine for dinner," Link said, shrugging his shoulders. "And, we're leaving tomorrow afternoon, right after my presentation."
"Oh," Nancy sighed, crossing her arms over her chest. "Well, we'll come to find you tomorrow? We haven't seen you in years, Amelia."
"Sure," Amelia muttered, forcing a smile on her face. "Yeah, you can come to Link's presentation."
"I think Liz got lost, I have to find her, but I'll see you tomorrow!" They waved goodbye as Nancy walked away, and once she was out of sight, Amelia turned to Link.
"If I had a nickel for every time we ran into Nancy somewhere we completely didn't expect," she ran a hand through her hair. "Thank you for covering."
"Of course," he smiled, "although I was looking forward to meeting your other sister."
"And you will, tomorrow," Amelia groaned, leaning her head back against Link's shoulder. "Do I have to?"
"I mean, I have to give the presentation, so I'll see them, but if you want, I can tell them you died after we went back to the hotel room."
"You'd be over my death in less than 24 hours?" He nodded firmly, the smirk on his face growing.
"Oh, yeah, you think you're special?"
--------------------------------
"What're you thinking about?" Link asked, taking off his watch and setting it on top of the dresser. Amelia was collapsed on the bed behind him, staring up at the ceiling.
"My sisters."
"What about them?" He swapped his day clothes with pajamas and then sat on the bed beside her.
"They don't know about Scout. And, I didn't have a problem with that; we never saw them, they never made an attempt at reaching out, but seeing them today?" She rolled to the side, placing a hand on Link's chest and resting her head beside it. "I don't know, I know they're not going to be as close as Meredith and Maggie are, but I love the family we have for Scout, and to think that there may be more people to love him that I'm holding him back from?" Link glanced down at her and tangled his fingers in her hair.
"If you tell them, you're opening yourself up to criticism of every parenting decision you've made. This means staying in contact with them, Kathleen, and your Mom finding out. I mean, are you ready for that?" She sighed.
"No. But I don't want to keep them from Scout if they're willing to be family to him. He deserves to have as much love and annoying family around him as possible." She moved her head so that her chin was on his chest, and she was looking at him. "Your parents are the best grandparents there are. And, what if my Mom wants to take him for ice cream on the weekends and send him postcards from every place she visits?"
"When was the last time your Mom was in contact with Mer's kids? They're her grandkids, and I don't think I've ever heard them mention her before." Amelia looked away and sighed again. "If you want to make an effort with them, I will be by your side the whole time. But, just think about everything that's happened between all of you, and think about if you want that around Scout." He reached down to pull the comforter over them, and Amelia grabbed her phone from the bedside table. "What're you doing?"
"Facetiming Maggie. I miss Scout." He smiled and kissed the top of her head, grins covering both of their faces as the call opened to see Scout asleep on top of his Aunt.
--------------------------------
"It'll be fine," Link muttered against her hair, pressing a quick kiss to the side of her head. "They're walking over here." Amelia smiled as her sisters approached them.
"Hey," she greeted, raising her eyebrows as Liz pulled her into a hug.
"It's been forever, Amelia; I'm so glad to see you!" She pulled back and stuck her hand out to Link. "Liz. And, I'm the last one to meet you." He shook her hand and introduced himself.
"And, the only one to meet him as himself," Nancy muttered snarkily, crossing her arms over her chest. Amelia refrained from rolling her eyes.
"We can't stay for long; our flight leaves in a few hours, and we still have to pack," Link smiled pleasantly, "but we figured we would stay to see you." They all sat down at the table in the cafe.
"So, what's going on with you two?" Amelia looked at Link, who placed his hand on her leg and squeezed gently.
"We just bought a house, one close to the hospital and to Meredith so we can be near her," Link spoke. "Other than that, working all the time. This conference is our first time away since the pandemic."
"A house?" Nancy raised her eyebrows. "Are you two getting married?"
"No," Amelia shook her head, breathing slowly to calm herself. "Just finding our own space. We were stuck watching Mer's kids for most of the pandemic, and we needed to get out of there."
"Mm, I would love to come and visit," Liz muttered, sipping her coffee, "I haven't been to Seattle since Derek needed a nerve transplant."
"Maybe we can all make a trip out of it?" Nancy added, leaning back in her chair. "We never see Derek's kids."
"Link and I have a son," Amelia blurted out, her eyes widening as soon as she said it. "Uh, sorry, I thought I should say that so you don't come to Seattle and surprise! There's a toddler running around our house." Link squeezed her leg again.
"A toddler? He's a toddler, and you didn't tell us?"
"Yeah, we don't exactly talk very often, and we were a little stressed with a newborn and Mer's kids during quarantine," Amelia paused. "His name is Scout, and he just turned two a few months ago."
"Can I see pictures?" Liz asked, leaning forward and clasping her hands together. Link smiled and pulled out his phone, opening the album with thousands of photos of Scout. He turned the phone to her. "He looks just like you, Link." Liz turned the phone towards Nancy.
"I'm sorry, how did you have a baby and not tell your family?" Nancy scoffed and crossed her arms over her chest.
"Family means being there for each other, and I didn't want to say anything after you and Kathleen spent a dinner throwing things in my face."
"After you lied to us." Amelia breathed out slowly and bit the inside of her cheek. "We're your family."
"I'm trying to move forward, and if you want to be part of the life that we have now," she motioned between her and Link, "you can. And if you don't, I have plenty of family in Seattle who will be there for us and our son. Family isn't just blood." Nancy held her hands up in defense.
"So, you don't want us in your life?"
"No," Link spoke beside her, squeezing Amelia's leg again as he sensed her upset. "We're saying that if you want to be involved, and you're willing to do that without constantly bringing up the past, we'd love to have you in our lives."
"I know my kids would love to come and visit," Liz smiled and handed the phone back. "They'll be so excited about their baby cousin, can I get your address to send things? A late birthday gift, so my kids have an excuse to buy too many baby toys." The neurosurgeon smiled and took her phone out.
"I'll text it to you," she whispered, trying to hide her joy. "We'd love to have you visit; he loves meeting new people ever since the pandemic ended."
"Does Mom know?"
"Not yet," Amelia clasped her hands together under the table. "We're figuring things out. And, I can't control whether you tell her and Kathleen, so I'll probably tell them soon."
"This is insane," Nancy shook her head, "this is insane."
"Nance, give her a chance," Liz looked over, watching as their eldest sister stood up and grabbed her jacket. "She's trying here; can't you give her some credit for that?"
"No, she doesn't get to join the family when it's convenient for her." She took her phone from the table and dropped it into her pocket. "I'll see you later, Liz, and Amelia?" Amelia raised her eyebrows. "I hope you understand, and I hope that one day, you'll make an effort to be part of the family." She walked away, leaving the three of them alone at the table. Amelia sighed and leaned back in her chair, rubbing her forehead with her hand.
"I'm sorry about her," Liz whispered, glancing towards where she had left. "But, I'd love to hear more about your son, if that's okay." Amelia grinned and pulled out her phone, showing a picture of Scout with his birthday cake in front of him.
--------------------------------
"Nancy hates me," she muttered, tightening her grip on the armrests of her seat, glancing as people hurried past the waiting area they had occupied in the busy airport.
"And, Liz doesn't." Link placed his hand over hers and squeezed lightly. "You found someone who wants to be involved, who wants to be family, and maybe the others will come around. And if they don't, we don't need them. We have a perfect family back in Seattle." Amelia looked into his eyes and sighed.
"How do you always know what to say?"
"Because I know you, and I can see the wheels turning in your brain, and I'm telling you to slow them down. Take a deep breath." She did and laid her head on his shoulder. "Whatever happens, you're always going to have everyone back home. Like you said, Scout deserves to have as much love around him as possible, and some people in your family might not be willing to give that, and we don't need that." He kissed her head and wrapped his arm around her shoulder.
"I'm glad I told them, though."
"You've still got a phone call to make," Link muttered. "Unless you want your mother to find out through Nancy."
"I know, I know. And, I'll do it." She closed her eyes and let out a shaky breath.
"I'm proud of you, you know that?" Amelia looked up at him and smiled.
"Thank you."

Come and Find Me Chapter 6: 24 Hours
Tumblr media
Hello my darlings, here is chapter 6 FINALLY. Thank you for letting me work on my mental health, I can’t express how much every interaction I’ve had with you has helped, whether it be a like, comment, or reblog, you guys have brought me SO MUCH JOY.
Masterlist
Spencer Reid x Reader
Warnings: Violence, swearing, mentions of rape
Spencer clenched his fists to keep his hands from shaking. “What do you mean never see her again? Don’t you dare fucking touch her-”
“Tsk, tsk Doctor, there is a lady present. Though she can’t hear us at the moment.” The voice murmured condescendingly. “But I am a fair man Doctor, I will let you speak to her, eventually.”
“Let me speak to her now.” Spencer growled.
“So demanding Doctor, but I suppose I’ll oblige you, if only because she looks so broken right now.” The voice cooed.
There was silence on the phone for a moment, the beeping of buttons and then, your voice.
“What do you want now you sick bastard?” You sounded tired, defeated. Spencer felt his heart break.
“(Y/N), can you hear me?” Spencer asked urgently. On the live feed, you head shot up and looked around.
“Spencer?” Your voice broke and tears blurred your vision. “Am I dreaming?”
“No, no! I’m coming to find you baby. I promise, this sick bastard is not going to win-” Spencer said encouragingly.
Hope filled your eyes, but quickly disappeared behind nerves. You had to tell him the last place you were. He had to find you and you didn’t know how much time you had left.
“Spence, I made it to Florida, call the hotel I was at. They might have security footage-” Your voice was cut off.
“Now, that’s no fair. She can’t help you.” The voice said angrily.
“No, put her back on the line you sick f-” Spencer yelled into the phone desperately. He could see that you were still talking on the video feed. Tears slid down his face as he watched you mouth “I love you.” You didn’t even know that he couldn’t hear you anymore.
“24 hours doctor.” The voice said and hung up. The live feed went black.
“It’s a burner phone. I could triangulate it to two cell towers, but that could put it anywhere in Miami.”  Penelope explained.
The room was silent as they waited for Spencer’s reaction. His shoulders were tense, he still eyed the screen, his back completely turned to the team.
“Spencer?” JJ asked, gently coming up to him.
“JJ, I’m going to give you the number to (Y/N) hotel. I need you to get any security footage you can from them. Penelope will use face scan and analyze it.” Spencer ordered, his body still tense and unmoving.
“I’ll contact them and the local police down there, have them start looking for (Y/N)  and set up a place for us at their precinct.” JJ reassured.
“I’m going to call Hotch and Rossi, I’ll tell them to meet us at the jet.” Emily said. “Maybe they got something out of Curtis that can help us out.”
Spencer nodded, unable to form words around the tightness in his throat.
“We’ll get her back Reid, and then we want a proper introduction.” Morgan teased, trying to ease Spencer.
As they all began to move to grab their go-bags, Spencer’s phone rang again.
Spencer took a deep breath, as he glanced at his phone. It was Ava’s contact.
He quickly answered it. “Ava?”
“Spencer,” Her voice sounded terrified. “I need you to come to this address, I think (Y/N)’s in danger.”
________________________________________________________________
You jumped as the door to your “room” slammed open.
“You stupid bitch!” The voice wasn’t as deep now without it’s automated assistance, but his voice was still muffled behind a mask. It was a cheap plastic Halloween mask, the one you get so you can decorate it however you want. It’s blank white stare covered his whole face.
He stalked his way toward you angrily, causing you to push yourself further back onto the bed. There was no place for you to go.
“You just couldn’t keep your mouth shut huh? You are so moon eyed over your Doctor that you fucking cheat. You whore!” He grabbed your ankles and pulled on your chains, dragging you down the bed, causing you to scream. His grip was hard enough to leave bruises.
“Do you know what happens to whores?” He growled. “They get what they deserve.”
He tried to push your legs open, but you clawed at his arms, hard enough to break your nails and draw blood. As he tried to draw his arms back, you scratched at his face, ripping the mask off and catching one of his eyes.
He let out a pained scream and backhanded you across the face. You yelped as it sent you flying back against the bed.
You quickly pushed yourself up, readying yourself if he tried to advance on you again. He was hunched over, grabbing at his face, blood leaked from where your nails had dug in.
“It wasn’t supposed to go this way.” He said enraged.
Your body froze at that voice. A voice that you knew all too well. A voice that didn’t speak much, but when it did, there was always a smile on his face.
“No.” You whispered softly.
________________________________________________________________
Andrew Curtis, 29 years old, 6’4. Auburn hair, brown eyes, and a friendly smile that had made women trust him when he had come into their home.
The man in front of him was smug, too smug for someone who is going to be behind bars for the rest of their life. Hotch wished he could tackle him to the floor and wipe the gleeful look off of his face.
5 innocent women, almost 6. Women with families and lives just wiped from the world because of the sick bastard in front of him.
“Oh Agent Hotchner, Agent Rossi, what brings you to my humble abode? I’ve recently redecorated, I hope you like it.” Andrew Curtis laughed.
Hotch and Rossi didn’t deign to respond, hiding their disdain behind a stern blank mask.
“Ouch, so cold as always, here I was hoping something interesting happened for you to come visit me.” Curtis said with a pout.
“Rumor has it you’ve been receiving letters from an outside anonymous fan, care to enlighten us more about him?” Rossi said, voice cold.
“Not even a greeting, a little catch up? How is the rest of the team, Prentiss, JJ,- oh and my dear favorite doctor Reid.” Curtis purred.
“I did always find your connection to Reid fascinating, you only let him talk with you and a little bird told us you keep newspaper clippings about him and much of his thesis and research work.” Rossi pushed, ignoring Curtis’s taunts.
“Oh my guards are such gossips, but I suppose there's not much else to keep them entertained around here.”
Hotch let out a growl. “Let’s skip the games Curtis. You know you have nothing over us, you’re locked here for the rest of your miserable existence and then some. We will not be your source of entertainment. Who have you been communicating with?”
“You know, I never thought you guys would catch me, and it truly took a toll on me when you did. But I had a small victory knowing that you had gotten some of my profile wrong.” Curtis smiled and it made ice fill Hotch’s veins.
“Oh and how is our profile wrong? You’re still in a cell aren’t you? Everything we said turned out to be correct.” Rossi said confidently.
“You might have profiled me correctly dear Rossi, but I am afraid you missed a small crucial detail.” Curtis hummed proudly.
“And what would that detail be.” Hotch urged.
“The kind that costs ya Hotchner. Maybe a nicer cell, with a little less security.”
Hotch and Rossi exchanged a look. Could it be worth it?
Hotch dipped his chin in agreement. Yes, if only for Reid.
“We will see what we can do.” Rossi said slowly.
A smug look crossed Curtis’s face as he leaned back in his chair, satisfied. He looked like the cat that got the cream and the male Agents across from him hated it. “Allow me to let you divine profilers know, that you were wrong and that you might have caught me, but you did not catch my prodigy.” His victorious laugh bounced off the walls, grating the tense room.
“Your prodigy?” Hotch probed, his voice dangerously low, a sign that he would explode if he wasn’t careful.  Rossi gave him a side glance, an attempt to remind Hotch to keep a steady head.
“Oh yes, it’s a thrill really, knowing that he is still out there, maybe he already has a new victim! But guessing by the fact that you are here, he already took someone, didn't he? Did he leave a calling card?”
Rossi and Hotchner remained silent and stern faced.
Curtis cackled, ”He left my calling card didn’t he? Your faces say it all! Oh boy, he really is my best student.”
“Who is he Andrew? We need a name-”
“He finally did it, he got the girl didn’t he?”
“Got who?” Hotch asked. “Curtis is a narcissist, play to that and he will give everything up in no time.” Rossi reminded him before they went into the room.
“Your dear Doctor’s girl! He left hints, but I wasn’t sure that the kid had it in him to be honest, he always seemed too soft.”
“You sure talk a mean game for someone who doesn’t know what’s going on.”  Hotch growled, knowing this would rouse up Curtis.
“Oh come now Hotch, don’t play coy with me.” Curtis growled, “He’s got (Y/N), pretty (Y/C/H) haired thing, who if my little brother didn’t care so much for, would have been one of my own victims.”
“This prodigy is your little brother?” Rossi asked, not allowing Curtis to find out if he was right or not.
“No, not blood related, just someone I took under my wing.”
The door to the interrogation room opened and a guard popped his head in. “Agent Hotchner, you have an urgent call from an Agent Prentiss?”
“Of course, excuse me.” Hotch said, getting up and making his way out of the room.
He came back less than a minute later. “Agent Rossi, they’ve found a lead.”
Now it was Rossi’s turn to smirk. “Looks like we won’t be needing you after all Curtis, but do enjoy your current view.”
Curtis growled and yanked at his chains.
Rossi rolled his eyes as he got up to leave.
Right as Rossi was about to leave the room, Curtis’s voice piped up, “Nothing brings me more joy than knowing I tricked you, that you profilers failed to figure out that I didn’t work alone. Your devout profiling method was wrong and now my prodigy lives on, achieving his dreams, and ruining you and your doctor in the process.”
Rossi slammed the door shut to block out Curtis’s manic laughter.

The Imperial guard who approaches him is very careful, almost reverent in his posture.
Lan XiChen is resting. He has been ordered to do so by uncle, who has done precious little resting himself, only stepping away from the guqin when his fingers are on the verge of bleeding.
Since Wei WuXian had been moved from the grand hall, not a moment has gone by without the sounds of Cleansing weaving throughout the Emperor’s chambers, a continuous exertion of spiritual energy that no single Lan cultivator could have maintained. But there are three of them, and although their skills and abilities differ, the Emperor is no longer in danger, his chest rising and falling smoothly with unlabored breaths of deep sleep.
WangJi has only abandoned the guqin when ordered to do so, and only so he may move closer to bed, settling down on the floor by Wei WuXian’s shoulder. The position does not look restful; WangJi’s tense figure is stiff with coiled worry, his eyes locked on the Emperor’s face, as if by sight alone he can infuse more color into his cheeks. XiChen can hear the soft murmur of Lady Jiang’s voice, and WangJi’s equally as soft response. Some steps away, the Rogue Prince stands motionless, his vigil silent.
“Young Master Lan,” the Imperial guard whispers, “forgive me for interrupting. General Nie is outside, requesting to speak with you. What would you like me to tell him?”
XiChen needs a few moments to formulate an appropriate response.
The Imperial guard waits patiently, deferentially even, comically folded in half so he can hear XiChen’s response. XiChen finds this entire situation beyond absurd.
The Young Master of the Lan Sect should not be asked if he wishes to speak to the General of the Emperor’s army. The Young Master of the Lan Sect can be issued an order by the lowest court official, and would have no choice but to obey. Yet, he thinks, if he were to tell this Imperial guard that the General must wait, or come back at a later time, the guard would jump to follow instruction.
The rest are no better. For hours now, they have tiptoed carefully around all three of the Lan Sect members, as if charged with protecting royalty. Most of them even hesitate to look at uncle directly, their eyes never quite managing to rise past uncle’s knees. Uncle’s performance during the Gifting Ceremony had been impressive to be sure, but the current level of veneration for a man who had been dismissed and spurned only a day ago, seems far beyond excessive.
XiChen had not spoken to Nie MingJue since issuing the misguided invitation. This is neither the time nor the occasion for the conversation they must have, not to mention that XiChen feels ill-prepared to have it even under the best of circumstances. But now, in the midst of their attempts to keep the Emperor breathing, in the midst of his brother’s obvious anguish, his uncle’s exhaustion, his own fatigue, XiChen cannot face the prospect of further heartache.
Still, he cannot have the guards turn the General of the Emperor’s army away, regardless of their willingness to do just that. He rises slowly, and the guard steps back, as if XiChen would scold him for standing too close.
Nie MingJue waits just outside the entrance, facing two dozen Imperial guards. He is wearing full armor, his hand resting on the pommel of his saber.
The General of the Emperor’s army looks as if he may need to fight his way past the Imperial guards in order to enter the Emperor’s chambers. This implies a great deal about the powers currently in charge, and most of these implications are alarming in nature.
Is the Emperor still the Emperor?
XiChen does not know. No one else has come or gone. No inquiries have reached them, no orders, no edicts. There could be a bloody war outside the Jade Sword Palace, and none of those in the Imperial chambers would ever notice it being waged.
All these are legitimate concerns and worries, but XiChen cannot find the words to voice them. In the Nie battle armor, both chest and shoulder plate depicting the sneering Beast’s Head sigil, Nie MingJue is terrifying to behold. But the moment his eyes land on XiChen, his posture shifts, his face softens, the change clearly visible and devastating to see.
The hand on his forearm is careful as it draws him some distance away from the guards.
“XiChen,” MingJue says, “Are you well?”
It is a struggle to find his voice, but XiChen manages, “The Emperor is recovering well. It may be some hours yet until he wakes, and it will take many days for his strength to return. Uncle says he had fought back, attempting to expel the resentful energy on his own. This had saved his life, but it has also significantly depleted his--“
The hand tightens on his forearm, cutting his words in half.
“XiChen,” MingJue says again, “I asked if you are well.”
It is a basic rule of politeness, that the question once blatantly ignored, should not be repeated. But such rules have no effect on Nie MingJue.
XiChen is tired of suppressing the constant and unrelenting waves of anxiety. The calluses he had built up over the years cannot hold up to the punishing pace they had set to keep the Emperor breathing. His fingers hurt. His shoulders hurt. He has suffered greater discomforts in the past, and borne them with dignity. But now, he feels very small, and very tired, and he wishes that he could say these things to Nie MingJue, perhaps the only person who would not think less of him for hearing them.
He exhales, a shuddering breath that feels much too revealing, “I am well. I am only tired. Why are you here? Is the Emperor still in danger?”
Nie MingJue glances back at the Imperial guards and pulls XiChen a little further away, out of their hearing range.
“The Jiang Sect has taken charge of the Imperial guards,” he says, “Which was to be expected. The Jiang and the Nie have always stood together as brothers-in-arms in the defense of the Emperor. But there are... tensions. Multiple sects are calling for a war with the Wen. The High Councilor appears to be in agreement. Perhaps he sees such an action as a logical response to the attack on the Emperor. Or perhaps, he is resentful of the fact that HuaiSang is in possession of an edict naming him the guardian of the successor.”
The carefully concealed anxiety blooms in XiChen’s chest, leaving him breathless.
“Can the Council declare war? Without the Emperor’s approval?”
“No,” MingJue says, “but they may try and do so regardless. If I refuse to follow their orders, this will result in different war, right here in the palace halls. I do not want to lead the army against the Imperial guards. This must be prevented.”
“How-- what do you need? What can I do?”
“I need the Emperor,” Nie MingJue says bluntly, “The sects need to hear that the Emperor is well, and recovering quickly. They need to hear this from the Lan Sect Leader.”
They are far enough away where XiChen can no longer hear the sounds of the guqin, but he knows that the Cleansing has gone on uninterrupted.
He shakes his head, “My uncle-- the Emperor is not yet well enough to be left to the care of WangJi and myself. I will come in his place.”
Chapter 49
Nie HuaiSang has never sat on the dais alone.
He has wielded almost as much power as the Emperor himself. He has frequently sprawled on the Emperor’s seat, worn the Emperor’s clothes, used the Emperor’s seal. But he has never before felt so utterly alone.
His personal guard, the members of the Nie Sect charged with his protection, are lined up behind him. The High Councilor is to his left; to the right, the empty space where A-Jue should be is a constant source of anxiety and irritation. In front of him, the receiving hall is crowded with every Sect and clan leader in the Immortal Mountain City, only some of them trustworthy, and nearly all of them unpredictable. The seat underneath him feels akin to a death trap, waiting for an opportune moment to snap closed on his tender backside.
His hand tightens around the fan, then relaxes. Tightens, then relaxes.
With Wei Ying by his side, he could hide behind the fan. He could do anything, say anything, act in any way he pleases. With Wei Ying by his side, the obvious clusters of hostility in the hall would be an insignificant source of amusement.
His eyes meet Jiang Cheng’s, only for a moment, neither acknowledging the contact. In the back of the hall, three members of the Wen Sect stand under guard. Wen Qing is cool and collected, her head held high, her robes bright and striking next to the muted Nie greens. HuaiSang can see A-Lin making a conscious effort to emulate his sister, but being a nervous creature by nature, he is only managing to appear more rigid. Granny Wen is in possession of composure that HuaiSang very much envies at this moment. Their lives are on the line as much as his own, but one would never know it by looking at Granny Wen’s face.
The rest of the Wen Sect is in the Jade Sword Palace courtyard, under guard, and awaiting their fate. HuaiSang has managed to stall the calls for an immediate attack on QiShan, but only by insisting that the Emperor’s condition must take precedence. Still, with each moment that passes with A-Jue conspicuously absent, the tension in the hall seems to rise, the hostility and the resentment thickening.
HuaiSang would very much like to keep all of the secrets that must be kept, and not start a war today. He has an unpleasant feeling that he may not get to have both.
It is difficult to conceal a sigh of relief when A-Jue finally enters the hall. The Lan Sect Leader is absent, but Lan XiChen’s placid countenance is almost an improvement. It is no secret that Lan QiRen is generally disliked for his personality alone, the man’s icy facade only serving to agitate the existing resentment. Lan XiChen, infinitely serene in the face of animosity, patient and humble to a fault, may be precisely the type of calm presence that can soothe the waves of unrest in the hall.
There may be some question as to whose authority is higher in this instance. The Royal Companion, often perceived as the Imperial Consort, technically does not outrank the High Councilor. His status as the guardian of the successor only gives him power once the Emperor is no longer among the living. Still, Lan XiChen does not hesitate. His first bow and greeting is given to Nie HuaiSang. He turns to the High Councilor next, a perfect mirror image, the bow no less deep, the greeting no less courteous. But the hierarchy the Lan Sect recognizes has been made clear. This acknowledgment is significant, considering the current position of the Lan Sect, both as the saviors of the Emperor, and their future connection to the throne through marriage.
Nie HuaiSang greets Lan XiChen politely in turn, feeling as if his seat is now a little less likely to collapse under his anxious bottom.
“Young Master Lan,” the High Councilor says, “the Council requires an update on the Emperor’s condition.”
“The Emperor is recovering well. His life is no longer in danger.”
The hall had hushed to hear the response, but now a low murmur rises, the word traveling among those placed furthest away from the dais.
“Are you quite certain?”
“I am certain,” Lan XiChen says, his voice unwavering, “The Emperor should wake soon, although he may still require days of rest to regain the spiritual energy he had lost.”
All of HuaiSang’s bones seem to turn liquid at once. It is by force of will alone that he manages to stay upright, instead of slumping against the throne in relief.
“The Royal Companion had summoned the Lan Sect Leader,” Jin GuangShan says carefully, only two steps below the High Councilor, “Is there a reason that the Young Master is here in his place?”
Lan XiChen smiles, but the smile does not reach his eyes, “The Jin Sect Leader is very observant. The Lan Sect is honored to be an object of the Jin Sect Leader’s concern. My uncle believes that the Emperor’s recovery must take precedence over other matters. Please forgive my humble presence in his place.”
Nie HuaiSang feels that he has been quite unjust to the Young Master of the Lan Sect in the past. He also believes that he could become quite fond of the man in the future. It has been somewhat... difficult to reconcile himself to A-Jue’s single-minded focus on Lan XiChen, a person who is still essentially a stranger. It is a common failing of siblings, to find their future in-laws unworthy despite all evidence to the contrary. But Nie HuaiSang is willing to admit his error.
“The Emperor’s health, of course, takes precedence,” the High Councilor says, “We are grateful to the Lan Sect for their assistance and dedication. As the Emperor is recovering swiftly, I believe all decisions may wait for his judgment.”
A louder murmur rises at his words, and Nie HuaiSang braces for the inevitable.
Which comes, to no one’s surprise, in the form of Sect Leader Yao.
“Are we to simply allow the Wen Sect to go free? After such a betrayal? The Emperor himself had stated that their lives are to be forfeit if Wen RuoHan ever dared orchestrate another attack. Do you mean to act against the Emperor’s orders?”
This, of course, is all Wei Ying’s fault. Nie HuaiSang had offered to have Sect Leader Yao killed years ago. The man would have been infinitely more useful as dust and bones, than he is now, with his flapping mouth always sowing discord.
“The Wen Sect will be placed in the dungeons to await the Emperor’s judgment,” Nie HuaiSang says coldly, “Only the Emperor may decide the means of executing traitors. These decisions have never been within the purview of the powers given to the Council.”
“The Royal Companion is correct,” Jin GuangShan’s voice raises the hair on the back of HuaiSang’s neck, “and yet, my own disciple was jailed by no other than the former First Prince’s servant. The Jin Sect has yet to receive an explanation for this action.”
“Your disciple was jailed by my orders,” A-Jue says dismissively, “and will wait for the Emperor’s judgment along with the Wen Sect.”
HuaiSang winces. He loves his brother, but diplomacy is not Nie MingJue’s strong suit.
“Sect Leader Jin,” HuaiSang says meekly, “Your disciple had displayed suspicious behavior in the wake of the attack on the Emperor. Perhaps he is innocent, but surely, you do not begrudge us an overabundance of caution. I can guarantee that your disciple will come to no harm until the Emperor himself has had a chance to address the matter.”
He knows that there is nothing that influences the High Councilor quite as much as a reasonable argument delivered in a reasonable tone. HuaiSang has always wondered why such a man would choose a life companion that is rarely ever capable of calm and reasonable argument. As he expected, Jiang FengMian is nodding even before HuaiSang has finished speaking, making it clear that between the two of them, Jin GuangShan will find his complaint neatly swept to the side. Familiar with the High Councilor’s tendencies to fold in the face of mildest possible pressure, Jin GuangShan appears unhappy, but offers no further complaints.
“Young Master Lan,” the High Councilor says, “the Council requests to be informed of any changes in the Emperor’s condition. Until then, I believe we have no further need of you.”
Lan XiChen bows, and is escorted out of the hall. HuaiSang fights a small stab of resentment that A-Jue escorts the man personally, when a dozen Nie Sect members would have done just as well. Maybe he no longer needs A-Jue’s support, now that the Emperor’s seat is no longer in peril, but he would have liked to have that support nonetheless.
“I believe that we may rest easily tonight, and meet again on the morrow,” Jiang FengMian says, “Is the Royal Companion in agreement?”
The Royal Companion is very much in agreement. He may have promised Jin GuangShan that his disciple will come to no harm, but HuaiSang has no qualms about breaking his word.

Once you were back inside of the club you made a b-line straight to your friends and crossed your arms, in hopes that no one would try to approach you to dance for the rest of the night.
You didn’t know why you had allowed for these two men to ruin your entire night. You had no idea who they were less than 24 hours ago so they weren’t important, but the fact that you had to hang around them for the rest of the evening until you got back to the hotel rubbed you the wrong way.
You let out a long sigh and unfolded your arms allowing them to hang freely at your sides.
Let it go… you silently told yourself. You allowed yourself to have a few more moments of self-pity before you drank the rest of your drink and left the glass on a random booth. You rejoined the rest of your friends as the danced in a circle and within a few minutes you had completely forgotten about your conversation a few moments ago. The heat of the floor and your friends celebrating amongst themselves had snapped you back into the present moment.
“here’s to getting married!” your best friend said loud enough for you to barely hear over the beat of the club and the rest of you cheered.
You went back to dancing by yourself but your friend had slipped her arms around you and shouted questions to you in your ear
“what happened with the hottie you were just dancing with?” she asked you
You gave her a look of disappointment before answering her “I don’t want to talk about it and ruin the mood”
She pulled away and gave you a look of shock before her eyes connected with someone in the crowd.
“time to go!” she screamed making sure that all of the girls were together before she took your hand and started pushing through the crowd to make it to the front door, and you willing allowed her to lead the way through the bodies that loitered the dance floor.
As soon as you were back into the fresh street air you had heard screams coming from random pedestrians outside on the streets and coming from clubs next door. You stared at the confused as to what was happening, until the guys that you had come to the clubs with started yelling to one another and scrambling inside of the vans.
You and your friends looked back and forth to one another, wondering if anyone had a clue as to what was going on.
“y/n! get in the van fast!” sehun yelled to you and without a second thought you immediately pulled your friend towards the van.
All of you sat inside in pure silence while the chaos continued to ensue outside. You could see multiple people with their phones out snapping photos and taking videos. Several girls were jumping up and down and screaming to the boys in your van and in the one directly in front of yours. It wasn’t until you had heard someone mention sehun and kai’s name directly that you were starting to get a hint as to what was happening.
Quickly the vans doors were shut and the driver started the car, pulling out into traffic and driving like his life depended on it.
“what’s going on?” one of your friends asked still completely confused.
You turned your head to Sehun and watched as he continued to sit in his seat quietly with an upset expression. You hadn’t really noticed it all night since you had paid so much attention to Kai all evening, but he really was a handsome man. His sharp jawline, flawless skin, amazing hair and style… his body was fit and the boy could really dance.
“are you guys celebrities or something?” you asked him quietly hoping that you would get a response if you didn’t make a big deal out of it.
He silently turned his head and the two of you stared at each other for a moment. You looked at his face and took his handsome facial features in while he looked back and forth in-between your eyes as if he was gauging how much he could trust you to keep his answer confidential.
He didn’t say anything but instead gave you a single head nod in confirmation. He looked down as if he was scared and embarrassed and you decided not to question him any further. You nodded your head as you put the pieces together and then faced forward, paying attention to the road instead of forcing Sehun to feel awkward.
As soon as the vans pulled into the gated hotel lot the boys filed out and immediately began to talk amongst themselves. You eyed them for a moment before you turned to your friends.
“ready for bed?” you asked them and they all smiled back at you with a dangerous grin. “what?” you asked back slightly scared
Your best friend wrapped her arm around you and began walking with you… or better yet guiding you back to the open bar located next to the pools. “y/n, since our bar hop was cut short why don’t we stay out and enjoy the night air a little longer?” she asked with a sweet tone.
You gave her a looking that ready seriously… but instead of arguing that you needed to go to sleep you gave in and followed along with their plans. You all took a seat at the bar and ordered a drink and while you waited you talked amongst yourselves. But in the corner of your eyes you saw the boys filing in the hallway to wait for an elevator to take them up to their rooms.
You had made eye contact with sehun and he gave you a small head bow before he stepped into the elevator and disappearing from your sight.
“earth to y/n” your best friend said as she waved a hand in front of your face drawing you back into your conversation. “so what happened with that other guy tonight?” she asked you making the rest of the girls chime in and focus on what you had to say
“nothing really… I mean I asked him what was up with him and Kai because they had both been staring daggers at each other all night. and he had pretty much told me that Kai was upset because he’s possessive of who he has his eyes on and it made him upset that I had danced with someone else.” You explained quietly hoping that the other pedestrians enjoying their night wouldn’t have to hear any of your drama.
The rest of the girls gave you grimaces and looked at each other as they processed what you had said.
“damn girl… he had only known you for one day and he was all kinds of caught up on you.” One of the girls says laughing
You shook your head in disbelief at the whole situation… or rather the whole day. What a roller coaster.
“aww he must have really liked you” your best friend said to you quietly while she pushed your hair over your shoulder
“it doesn’t matter if he liked me. It doesn’t give him the right to treat people like shit just because he’s being pouty. Plus the guy is still a total stranger.” You chimed back in
The girls all nodded their head and sipped on their drinks before they fell back into the conversations that they were having.
The next morning you were woken up by a loud series of knocking at your door. You groaned as you peeled your eyes open and rubbed the morning puffiness out of them. You glanced over at the clock on the bedside table and let out a sigh when you saw that it was almost 10am. It was a good thing that you were woken up so that you could still get some breakfast before the morning service was over.
You looked over to your roomate’s bed and saw that she was already up and out of the room. That was probably her or one of your other friends coming to get you before everything was shut down. So without a second thought you got up and opened the door.
“good morning” you said through a yawn as you stretched, letting your night gown ride up your thighs.
“good morning”
You heard the voice of a man and you immediately looked up at him through your sleepy eyes. You panicked and shut the door on sehun who stood out in the hallway unsure of what to do next.
“give me a minute” you said through the door before you threw yourself into the bathroom.
You looked at your appearance and groaned. You had no makeup on, you hair was a complete and total mess and you were wearing one of your more risker night gowns. You forced your hairbrush through your hair in an attempt to tame to knotted mess and put a bathrobe on over your gown. It wasn’t anything close to perfect but it would do for now.
You walked over to the door once more and checked outside the peephole, seeing a bored Sehun staring down at his shoes while he waited for you to open the door back up. You let out a final deep breath and then opened the door giving sehun an apologetic smile for forcing him to wait on you.
“sorry” you said softly not making any eye contact
Sehun smirked, giving you a half smile “its okay… can I come in and talk?” he asked with a raised eyebrow.
You looked back in your room and saw how messy it was but let out a sigh when you didn’t see any other option other than allowing him in. “sure” you said unconvincingly
You opened the door wider for him to enter and then shut it behind him inwardly screaming at yourself for being such a slop. Not only was he in your dirty ass room but he also saw you looking like a dirty ass mess. You stood awkwardly by your bed as he waited for you to sit or stand with him and you slowly and awkwardly took a seat on your bed as you waited for him to continue talking.
“you can sit down if you’d like” you said gesturing to the desk chair that was tucked into the desk right behind him.
He pulled it out and then sat down directly in front of you. He looked down at the carpet before he cleared his throat and looked back up to you. “I wanted to thank you for not making a scene last night in the van…” he started and then wet his lip with his tongue “the other men who I am here with and I are celebrities from South Korea and we are here to enjoy a quiet vacation. I-“
“wow” you said cutting off his next sentence and he gave you an tight lipped smile
“we would greatly appreciate it if you would keep what happened last night a secret…. As I said we are just trying to enjoy a vacation and it would be problematic for us if people found out where we are.” He continued “and I wanted to ask that you please don’t upload any photos with any of us in the background.”
You looked at him while he spoke to you and you couldn’t help but notice his lack of eye contact while he asked favors from you. He had looked genuinely concerned and nervous to even be here alone with you, and you started to feel bad for him.
“you don’t have to worry about anything.” You said with a soft voice and a small smile hoping that he would feel slightly more at ease. “I didn’t say anything to my friends and frankly I think that they were too drunk to really realize what was happening last night anyways. But ill make sure that none of you are in any photos that we’ve taken or take in the future.”
Sehun let out a deeply held breath and you could see his shoulders visibly curve in and relax. You couldn’t help but let out a small laugh at seeing how wired up and concerned he was before you had agreed to everything. He looked up at you with one eyebrow raised again, confusion in his eyes.
“what’s so funny?” he asked you
“nothing” you said shaking your hand “you just seemed so worried that when I agreed your whole body completely changed.” You confessed
“oh” was all that he said before he straightened back up
“if you don’t mind me asking….” You said looking up at him and he widened his eyes “how famous are you guys for people to be recognizing you in Mexico and freaking out?”
Sehun let out a small scoff and then smiled up at you “Not to sound like a douche… but in Asia we are a pretty big deal.” He answered and your eyes lit up
You looked him over again and noticed that even though he was dressed in pretty simple clothes his shorts and his shirt were designer brand and his shoes were Balenciaga’s. the watch that he was wearing was a gold Rolex and you were sure that anyone that looked that good and dressed that nicely had to be filthy rich. You shook your head in amazement as you stared at him and when you finally made eye contact with him again he was smiling softly at you.
“as a thank you for helping us keep this secret my members and I would like to invite you and your friends out with us today. We will be taking a private boat at to sea and swimming, fishing, snorkeling… you name it.” He said
Your eyes went wide and your mouth dropped. You immediately started laughing like a lunatic and you smiled at sehun who looked slightly confused as if he had missed a joke. You clapped your hands together and started to laugh harder at sehun’s expression and when you calmed down you coughed to clear your throat.
“I would love to, but I would need to ask my friends first. I have no idea what they have planned for today.” You said and sehun nodded his head “if you wait a minute for me to get changed I can go down and ask them since they’re probably all down stair having breakfast.”
Sehun gave you a small head nod and you smiled at him while you stood up and gathered some clothes out of your suitcase. You quickly walked to the bathroom and changed into your clothes, snickering to yourself like you had gone completely insane. The girls were going to have a field day when they heard that you had scored them such an exciting offer.
It was going to be your girls and you, the ocean and 9 of the finest men at this resort on a private boat…. Oh shit…. That also included Kai.

Authors note: NF stands for necrotising fasciitis; Riley is your partner
"Look we're doing everything we can but there's no strong leads we can use right now." Jay informs Sharon Goodwin of CPD's latest news about the state of emergency the city of Chicago was currently in.
"I have people in quarantine Jay and the press isn't helping us at all." Sharon told him. "This isn't something out of the blue. Someone has to be behind this mess."
"We're doing everything we can but that's all I can give you right now."
"Incoming!" Maggie calls out. She swiftly joins the group. "We can't keep up Sharon."
"Is it NF?"
"Yes it is. Y/N and Riley are bringing them in."
At the mention of his girlfriend Jay's heart sunk. He knew how dangerous your job was on the daily but now he truly understood the pressure you had on your chest.
It only made him work harder in figuring out who is behind this mess.
He saw you a lot but never for long enough. After it was debunked that the virus is spread airborne or through contact, you were able to hug and kiss Jay quickly whenever the two of you saw each other at Med. But nothing more than that.
Jay worked late at the District and your 24-hour shifts were long and hard as they were. Adding the outbreak heavied on the both of you.
The sound of heavy footsteps coming from the entrance alerted everyone and soon people stepped aside to let you and Riley through.
"Jasmine Black. 23 years old with necrotising fasciitis. I think we'll need to amputate her leg. It's... Gone." You informed the nurses. They did their job with you and called Crockett Marcel, hoping that he will be able to save her.
Your worried eyes spot Jay and the only thing you can do is nod sadly. You've been exposing yourself to the bacteria continuously, and each time you risked your life for someone else's it never ended well. So far, you didn't bring anyone who came out of the OR alive.
And that broke you.
"Do you think she'll make it?" Sharon asked Riley and you when you joined their little circle.
"No we don't think she will," Riley started to explain. Jay wrapped his arm around your shoulder and supported you for as long as possible. Soon, you and Riley will be back in the outside world in the heart of the outbreak. "The bacteria spread out in her leg, it's impossible to try to save her without amputation. And even with that we can only hope that she survives."
"Oh God. How are you girls feeling?" Goodwin placed her hand on your forearms in a soothing matter.
"We're tired but okay." You told her.
"I should probably get back to the District. If you find anything that can help us call me." He squeezed your shoulder and removed his arm before you could even stop him.
On que, your radio informed you of your new victim. "That's our que."
***
"Sir you need to lie down!" You command the man you're currently bringing into the ED. His arm is infected but he doesn't waste a beat when trying to get off the gurney.
"N-No!" He screams. Like a fish, the man flops off the gurney and tries to get away in a wonky run chase.
"For God's sake!" Riley exclaims. "Sir you are stuffed with anesthetics! You can't get away from us!"
You shoot her a look of pure invitation to help and she joins you in the chase. Using your running skills you accomplished by taking daily morning runs with your boyfriend, you appear in front of the drowsy man and once again command him to stop.
He does not in fact listen to your sane reasoning and throws his weak body onto yours. That wouldn't be a problem had he not collapsed unconscious on your unprotected body.
***
"Seriously Nat I'm fine." After the intense chase with an angered-drowsy-on-anesthetics patient you're stationed in one of the trauma rooms with Natalie Manning.
While Nat keeps checking you for any cuts or scratches you stay still and think about what happens next. "Will you put me in quarantine?"
"Only if you have any cuts that can catch the bacteria." In that moment her eyes land on your palm. There's a small scratch and blood over the wound.
"I-I always wear gloves." You try to reason with her. You can't be stuck in quarantine. Not now. Not when they need you.
The look on Natalie's face is enough to tell you otherwise. "I'm sorry Y/N."
***
"Welcome Y/N. Trust me, it's cosier than it looks." You join Hailey in your separate four walled vertical rectangle box. Supposedly, this will keep you from spreading the bacteria if you have it. You won't know that until you get your cultures back. "So. What brings you here?"
You laugh lightly, suddenly realising how poor your luck is. "A dude with anger issues that was high on anesthetics with an arm eaten away by the bacteria threw himself on me during one of his many aggressive episodes, and collapsed unconscious. Leaving me and my scratched bloody palm alone in quarantine."
"Correction. You're not alone." She says laughing. "I take it Riley got away."
"She had her protective gear on. And since we're low on paramedics that go on these runs, they let her go." You bring your palm in the air and wave it around. "My palm and I are stuck in here until the cultures come back."
And that's how you spent countless of hours in deep discussion with your boyfriend's partner in crime. While Hailey wanted to join Jay in finding out who did this, you wanted to get back into your ambulance and help save lives.
Neither of you could do what you wanted so you took that time and started to get to know each other. You already have three girlfriend dates scheduled and a whole birthday party for Riley and Jay planned out in bits.
After your conversation faded into comfortable silence the two of you were lost in your own thoughts. You let yourself think about how Jay will react once he finds out. A part of you wants him to visit you as much as it wants him to stay away from you and stay safe.
You're halfway on the road to dreamland when you hear his voice. "Y/N?"
You watch him make his way towards you with only one eye opened. Opening both of them would mean taking 100 steps back from dreamland and that's the last thing you wanted to do at the moment.
But seeing him stand in front of you, separated by only a thin clear foil looking curtain, killed your wish for sleep making you stand up and almost sprint towards him.
"Are you okay? How did this happen?" He asked you, worry dripping from his voice.
"I'm fine and it's a long story."
"I have time."
"Baby no you don't." You tell him sternly. When the two of you enter a silent battle of eye emotions, he comes out of it as the winner. Sighing in defeat you start to explain what happened to you.
"We already went through a breakout attempt since certain people act like they're prisoners." You throw a nasty look toward Sharlene, the crazy lady who started a revolution within her rectangular box of protection. "Jay I'm fine! I'll stay here and take a few naps and be out before you know it."
Both of you lean against the colorless foil of protection until your foreheads meet. A part of you wants to escape your cloud of safety just so you can press your lips against his but you know better than to do that. Both you do.
"Call me when you get out?"
"Geez you make it sound like I'm in jail." Your attempt at being subtly funny an lightening up the mood falls in the water when you notice his stare. "Yeah, yeah, yeah. I'll call you don't worry."
"Good." Jay gives you a smile he reserves only for you. "I'll keep you posted."
"You better!!!" You exclaim. Your boyfriend is your only connection to the outside world.
"And I'll try to sneak in some food for you."
You almost shed a dramatic tear at his words. "Oh, Jay you're..."
"The best boyfriend ever?"
"The best boyfriend ever ever ever everrr!"
You spend a few more minutes with your boyfriend discussing the current situation before he talks to Hailey and eventually leaves.
Still dazed from love, worry and excitement, you return back to your sleeping position and walk back towards the road that's sure to bring you to dreamland.

We’re brothers now
“I don’t care Sam” Bucky said, placing a wet cloth over his shivering partner, “we’re brothers now, this is what we do”
Or - Sam and Bucky are on a mission when Sam comes down with a fever and Bucky takes care of him, and Sam whinges about being a grown ass man.
Set after the events of Falcon and the Winter Soldier
Nothing could ever be simple nowadays. This was meant to be a simple recon mission. In and out they said. No more than 48 hours they said.
Well it was now hour 49 and Bucky was still sat in a dodgy motel. Sam was sprawled out on the bed, blanket cocooning him whilst he shivered violently. They were meant to have left a few hours ago, but when Bucky woke up to his partner delirious from fever and coughing like a 90 year old asthmatic life long smoker he knew they weren’t going anywhere that day, except may the hospital if the said fever doesn’t break soon.
Bucky sighed for the hundredth time that morning as he got up to soak the towel in cold water again, returning to the bedside to carefully run the cooling towel over Sam’s sweat soaked brow and neck. Reaching for the thermometer again he checked his partners temperature, the same way he’s been doing every 30 minute for the last 4 hours.
103.8 - shit.
He knew he had to go and get something to bring Sam’s fever down, but he didn’t want to risk Sam waking up alone. Last time he woke up he had no idea where he was, who Bucky was, or what they were doing in a dingy motel together. It took Bucky nearly 45 minutes of batting of Sam’s feeble attempts to fight him and calm explanation for Sam to get with it enough to know who he was and that he was safe. And when that realisation occurred he’d simply collapsed into Bucky’s arms, his body finally feeling secure enough to pass out. That was 2 hours ago, when his fever was only 102.5, so God knows what he’d be like when he came round this time.
Glancing at the clock, it was now 9am. The motel staff would be around now, and Bucky decided the risk was worth the benefit. He slowly and quietly stood up and slid out of the door, glancing back to his still sleeping partners, before heading down to the main desk. A young woman sat there, no more than 24. She eyed him up and down, the usual mix of intrigue and wariness.
“Can I help you?”
“Yes ma’m. Where’s the nearest shop that should stock something for a fever?” Bucky asked, smiling politely and making himself look as non threatening as possible.
“Well that would be at Gordy’s corner shop, but I have some on me here if you’d like? Save you the trip. We can here your... fellow roommate coughing from down the hallway. He sounds like he needs it.”
She hands him a packet of pills, which he accepts gratefully, his smile now genuine.
“Thank you,” he looks at her name tag, “Isabella.”
He walks back to the room, by the end of the corridor he can hear Sam hacking up a lung. He sped up a little, and as he entered the room he was surprised to find that Sam wasn’t in bed. Shutting the door behind him he looked around for the location of the hacking, and his eyes landed on Sam, crouched in the corner of the room, gun aimed straight at Bucky’s head. Fuck, he should have removed the ammunition the minute Sam showed signs of delirium.
Bucky slowly raised his hands in the air in surrender, trying to make himself as small and un-threatening as possible when you’re a massive, muscular, super soldier with a less than inconspicuous metal arm.
“Sam.”
“Who are you? Where am I?”
“Sam, it’s Bucky.” He said, trying to make eye contact with Sam, who was now attempting to stand. As he wobbled dangerously Bucky took a step towards him. Wrong move. Sam trained the gun so the aim was directly between his eyes.
“Where am I?” Sam repeated, his voice breaking as he fights back a cough.
“In a motel. In Chicago. With me, Bucky. We’ve just finished a mission and we were going to leave earlier this morning but you’re sick.”
Sam looked at him with fever glasses eyes, the cogs in his head turning as he tried to follow what was being said.
“Buck?” He asked after a moment, lowering the gun.
“Yeah bud, it’s me.” He replied, stepping across the room and removing the gun from Sam’s hand, emptying the bullets into a dresser draw.
Bucky placed his hands on Sam’s shoulders, guiding him back to the bed.
“Back to bed with you Cap, you need to take these pills then go back to sleep.”
Sitting Sam on the edge of the bed he passed him the glass of water from the bedside table, and pulled the pills out of his pocket, popping two into Sam’s outstretched shaking hand. He downed them in one before collapsing into the bed. Bucky lay the blanket over him, just about refraining from tucking him in like a child.
Sam was asleep almost instantly, worn out from his little half arsed assassination attempt on Bucky. Bucky moved the desk chair back across the room and placed it beside Sam’s bed, taking up the position he’d sat in ever since Sam’s temp had gotten me over 103. He opened his phone and put his headphones in one ear, and continued watching the YouTube videos that Steve kept sending him now he had so much free time, being retired and all.
No more than half an hour later, Sam started coughing. There was no ease into it, he was suddenly spluttering and hacking. He tried to push himself upright but he was coughing too hard. Bucky grabbed his arm and pulled him into the sitting position, keeping his grip on him to stop Sam simply falling over. With his metal arm he gently rubbed circles on Sam’s back, hoping to both reassure and ground the newly titled Captain America. He didn’t fancy another delirious attempted murder scenario. It took a few minutes but Sam was able to take some ragged breaths without coughing. He looked to Bucky weekly.
“You know who I am?” He asked.
Sam have a weak smile, “the pain in my ass that won’t go away?” He rasped, his attempt at humour squashed by another round of coughing.
Bucky handed him the cup of water, which Sam sipped gratefully before flopping back down onto the pillows. Bucky took this as a chance to grab the thermometer and shove it in his ear, earning a feeble glare from Sam.
“101.8, well that’s better. Not great, but better.” Bucky said.
Sam hummed a response, already falling back to sleep. Bucky used this as his chance to cool his partner down further. He went to the bathroom and wet the towel with fresh cold water, before returning to his bedside vigil. He wiped the sweat off of Sam’s brow and neck again.
“Buck I’m a grown ass man.”
“You’re sick.”
“You don’t have to do this, I’m not dying, I’m just sick.”
“I want to help. And I’m not 100% sure on the not dying thing yet you know, best to have someone keeping an eye on you.”
Sam groaned, “ Please just leave me be, this’ll be super embarrassing when I’m with it again.”
“I don’t care Sam” Bucky said, placing a wet cloth over his shivering partner, “we’re brothers now, this is what we do”
Sam huffed a little, but it was completely void of true indignity, as the cooling of the towel pushed him back into sleep.
Bucky sighed, picking his phone up once again. Maybe no was the time to investigate the ebook app he’d downloaded, as it seemed like they wouldn’t be going anywhere for a while.

Tumblr media
Trigger Warnings: Angst, Fighting, Swearing, Drinking.
Characters: Thomas Shelby x Reader
Word Count: 1,662
Summary: Reader gets some bad news and turns to the Garrison for a cure-all. What she encounters there leaves little to be desired until someone with icey blue eyes and a razor blade cap graces her presence.
Requested by: anon
You walked down the dirty cobblestone street to the Garrison, desperate to drink away the woes of your terrible day. You had just been let go from your secretary job and had rent due in a months time, leading you to consider working in a brothel to make ends meet. You shuddered at the thought as you opened the doors, the smell of alcohol and smoke filling your nose and seeping into your lungs. The cool air from outside nipped at your legs and bare arms as you shrugged off your coat, revealing a ruby red dress.
As you walked towards the bar, you could feel eyes on you as drunken, horny, older men gawked at you as you went to sit at one of the bar stools. You quickly placed some cash on the bar and ordered three shots of whiskey, the bartender obliging immediately. The glasses gleamed in the amber lighting of the bar, the whiskey pulling you into its trap with one whiff. You knocked back the first and twisted the empty glass around on the table, thinking about the last thing your boss told you.
“We got a new secretary y/n. She has a lot of potential and so we’ve decided to let you go. Your efforts aren’t needed here anymore.”
You rolled your eyes and knocked back the second, feeling the light brown liquid burn as it went down. After sitting there for a while, you saw a group of men at one of the back tables, they were younger than a lot of the men in there, half of them around your age. They wore peaked caps with razor blades sewn into the front. You smiled lightly as you caught the eye of one of the members, his cold eyes staring into yours like he was in a trance. You quickly looked down at your glass and conversed with the bartender before putting some more cash down for two more shots. You finished your third, and as he slid the others over you felt someone behind you, reeking of whiskey and smoke.
“How about we go have some fun around back aye?” He said, slurring his speech. You felt the three shots quickly going to your head and you felt your eyes going a bit out of focus. You laughed and tried your best to tell him off.
“I’m not interested. Especially not with you.” You said giving daggers to the man. He chuckled in your face and grabbed your wrist as you downed your fourth shot.
You slammed the glass down and grabbed his hand hard with your nails digging into his arm. He winced and pulled his arm away rubbing the now red nail marks on his skin.
“Don’t you dare put your hands on me again.” You said loudly, knocking your last shot back and turning to leave the bar with your glass still in your hand. The man with the cold eyes watched as you attempted to get away from the drunk bastard.
When you turned to walk the man grabbed your arm again and tried to pull you back towards him, groping your dress. You stumbled a bit as your balance was quickly going to shit. You did your best to turn around, facing him and his rotten smile.
“You can’t just walk away looking like that.” He said.
You couldn’t tell if it was the alcohol or the events of the past 24 hours that had fueled your anger but you took it out on the man who had you in his grasp. Luckily he had your free arm in his hand, so you held the wide shot glass at its base and slammed it on his head, the glass bouncing off his skull in bloodied shards.
Panting from the effort, you yelled and looked to see most of the bar still going on like nothing happened.
“I told you not to fucking touch me!” You said before going back towards the restrooms.
You inspected your hands, they had been cut slightly, the mans head taking the brunt of the blow. You quickly washed them and applied pressure to stop them from bleeding, and taking a hanker chief and wrapping it around the one with the worst cut. When you walked out or more so stumbled out, you were met with the attractive, yet gaunt face of the cold eyed man.
“Are you okay miss?” He asked, his expression barely changing except for a hint of concern in his voice.
“Do i look fucking okay? I’m getting a drink.” You said and slowly walked past him towards the bar. He followed closely behind you, shoving people out of the way so he had better sight of you. Before you could place more cash on the bar he lightly grabbed your better hand.
“Don’t, it’s on me.” he said before nodding at the bartender.
“What kind?” He asked.
“Irish.” You and the cold eyed man said in unison. You smiled and looked at him. You could’ve sworn he had a slight smirk playing at his lips. After getting two glasses full, he led you to the table with the other men.
“Who’s this Tommy?” The older man asked.
“I don’t know, what is your name love?” He asked taking a drink of his whiskey.
“Y/n...and what is your name? Or well, all of your names actually.”
“I’m Thomas Shelby. that’s Arthur Shelby, John Shelby, and Finn Shelby.” He said pointing as he named them.
“Alright, nice to meet you then.” You said taking a swig of your drink.
“I saw what ya did back there. I was going to step in but, from the looks of it you took care of it.” He said pointing to your hand then looking over at the man clutching his bloodied head in the corner of the pub.
“Well, the bastard had it coming.” You said sighing.
“That he did.” He said beginning to light a cigarette. He offered you one and you shook your head no. He closed the tin and put it in his pocket and looked at you, his ice blue eyes curiously studying your features.
“What brought you here tonight Y/n?” He asked.
You looked down, feeling your face frown a bit at his question.
“I um, I got let go at my job today. Wanted to get away from the pain from it for a bit, but that didn’t seem to work so well as you can see.” You said shrugging your shoulders.
“What was your job?” He asked.
“I was a secretary for one of the banks a couple blocks down. It wasn’t the best but it paid the bills...now I’ll have to hit the streets.” You said finishing the rest of your whiskey.
“If you’re my secretary you won’t.” He said looking at you.
“Wait, are you offering me a job Mr. Shelby?” You asked, even in your inebriated state you could tell he was serious.
“Yep, you can start the day after tomorrow...oh and call me Tommy.” He said blowing smoke away from you and towards his brother John who grimaced and smacked his shoulder.
You smirked. “Thank you Mr.-I mean Tommy. I won’t let you down.” You said touching his shoulder with your better hand. He put his hand over yours and stroked it slightly making your heart jump. When you pulled your hand away you looked at your watch and realized it was 1 in the morning.
“Well, I should get going, I have to get some things situated at home.” You said and got up, stumbling a bit before Tommy placed his hand on the small of your back, keeping you from falling over.
“I’m not letting you walk home alone.” He said getting up and standing beside you, his hand snaking around your waist slightly. You tried not to blush as he did so but you caught eyes with Arthur who smirked at the both of you.
“I’ll be back soon, I’m walking her home. Ya see that man over there?” He said pointing to the drunk man who tried to grab you.
“Cut him a half smile.” He said and John and Arthur got up to do so as Tommy led you the other way to retrieve your coat.
You both stepped out onto the cold pavement, the streets dark and desolate given a few stragglers wandering around. You wrapped your coat tightly around you and linked your arm with his as he helped you walk. You were growing more unsteady by the minute, so it took a lot longer to get down the street and  down the few blocks to your flat.
“What business do you have Tommy?” You asked, the cold helping you sober up slightly.
“I deal with many things, and many people. Bookies, bets, and guns, various things.” He said bluntly.
You nodded, not quite understanding.
“Have you heard of the Peaky Blinders?” He asked as you both neared your flat.
You thought for a moment and nodded, knowing they were dangerous and had quite the reputation. You always wanted to be like them in a way, able to afford houses, whiskey, dresses, cars, all the things you were never fortunate to have the luxury of owning apart from a couple of nice dresses every once in a while.
“Does that scare you?” He asked as you walked up the stairs to your flat.
“No.” You said looking up at him as he looked into your eyes searching for any signs of doubt.
“Good.” He said before gently caressing your chin and bringing his lips to yours. You felt your heart race and your face frown slightly at the sudden loss of contact from the short kiss. He pulled away and smiled slightly before tipping his hat to you.
“See you at 9 in the morning, the day after tomorrow y/n.” He said.
“Sounds great Tommy. Goodnight.” You said, smiling as he nodded and walked away, disappearing into the cold foggy night.

a million ways
A/N: So I know I was supposed to be posting the first part of a multi-chapter AU with amelink as interns next, but I got distracted with this idea from another prompt I saw. I also want to have more chapters planned out before I start posting that AU one! So here’s something else for now- feedback and prompts always welcome! Thanks so much for all the support it truly means a lot :)
_______
There are a million different ways to tell someone you love them without actually saying the three words ‘i love you.’
Amelia and Link utilize several of these alternative ways before they realize what their words and actions actually mean.
_______
1) “Text me when you get home okay”
Amelia laughs in disbelief as she checks her phone. A voicemail from Meredith lets her know that her ride home from the airport has just fallen through. And of course Meredith would tell her this last minute.
This small inconvenience would normally bother her a lot more, but for some reason, her mood had significantly improved over the weekend. She’d even been sat next to an overly-chatty passenger on her flight home from San Diego, and usually that would put her over the edge, too. But, something about her weekend at the conference had undoubtedly affected her outlook.
Maybe it was the fact that she’d run into a particular coworker at said conference. Maybe she’d been impressed by his knowledge of alternative pain relief methods. Maybe it was the fact that they’d flirted all weekend.
Or maybe it was the rebound sex.
Yeah, that was definitely it, Amelia thinks to herself as she walks through the Seattle airport, a smile subconsciously adorning her face.
She makes her way outside of the airport, rolling her luggage behind her, and pulls her phone out of her pocket to attempt getting a cab.
“Dr. Shepherd?” An inquisitive voice gets her attention and her head snaps up to meet it.
Link is standing right in front of her. Equally inquisitive blue eyes match the tone of his voice. Amelia only falters for a moment before her brain seems to catch up to her.
“We slept together less than 24 hours ago and you’re referring to me as ‘Dr. Shepherd’...?” she mutters quietly, smirking at him.
He laughs sheepishly in response, rubbing at the back of his neck and nodding his head in agreement. “Amelia…” he continues, matching her smirk. “Were we....on the same flight home?”
“It seems that way.”
“Well,” he smiles, “I just got a cab, you want to share?”
Amelia nods quickly. “Actually yeah, Mer was supposed to pick me up, but she cancelled.” She looks up at him, and for some reason the eye contact is making her heart flutter. She tries to suppress it. “So, yeah. That’d be great.”
Link stores their luggage in the trunk of the cab and they both settle into the backseat. His apartment is slightly further out of the way, so Meredith’s house is the first stop for drop off.
Amelia tries to restrain a huge smile as Link gets out of the car and lifts her luggage out for her. “Thank you,” she murmurs as he sets it down in front of her on the driveway.
Link just smiles in response. He moves to get back into the cab and some sort of feeling dawns on Amelia. Somewhere between concern and care.
Link almost shuts the car door before Amelia quickly steps forward.
“Link, wait!”
He pauses, hand on the door handle, and looks up at her incredulously.
“Uh,” she pauses. Racking her brain for reasons she’d just stopped him. The sudden anxiousness over Link’s journey home doesn’t make sense to her at all.
Link’s eyebrows furrow in question as he watches Amelia try to make sense of what she’s feeling.
“Just….text me when you get home okay.” Amelia has no idea why she says this or where the sentiment is even coming from.
A smile grows wide across Link’s face at her words. He chuckles.
“What?” she laughs, blushing. Not at all understanding her own words or actions. “Just let me know you got home, alright?”
“Okay, Amelia. Will do.”
“Okay.”
Link shakes his head slowly in amusement as he closes the door and Amelia watches as the cab pulls away down Meredith’s street.
_______
2) “It reminded me of you”
They start seeing each other a lot more often. They work cases together. They have surgeries together. They even fly out to New York together for a particularly ground-breaking case. And all the while, their friends-with-benefits situation progresses.
Link even manages to meet some of her family. In a twisted scenario that includes Amelia attempting to make her family believe she’s still married to Owen, Link ends up witnessing some pretty personal details of Amelia’s life.
But Amelia remains convinced that the relationship between them is very surface-level.
Amelia is in a particularly good mood on this Monday morning. As she walks into the hospital, she notices the new coffee shop across the street is having it’s grand opening. And she decides to treat herself.
She places an order for a latte and while she waits for her drink to be made, she browses the cafe and all it has to offer. She’s particularly captivated by the variety of donuts displayed behind the glass-encased shelving behind the counter.
Amelia doesn’t know why she does it, she’s not even that hungry, but the idea of a box of donuts excites her. And the next thing she knows, she’s asking the woman behind the counter to add a dozen donuts to her order.
When she walks into the attendings lounge a few minutes later, she’s immediately relieved to see Link.
“Hey,” she grins. “Happy Monday.”
“Hey,” he smiles back, equally happy to see her.
She lifts the box of donuts into his view “Want one?”
“You got donuts?!”
Amelia bites her lip, laughing at his ability to get so excited over food.
“Yeah,” she responds. “The coffee shop across the street just opened. I just went in for a latte but then I saw these and-,”
She opens the lid to reveal a dozen glazed donuts.
“It reminded me of you,” she murmurs, surprised by her own words. She instantly attempts to downplay what she had just admitted. “So anyway, here’s to a sugar high to start your Monday off right.”
If any sort of reaction appears across Link’s face, it’s only for a moment.
He reaches in and grabs a donut, finishing it off in two bites, much to Amelia’s amusement. She eats one too, trying to suppress her laughter as Link impressively goes in for a second one.
_______
3) “Put your seatbelt on”
It’s the first snowfall of winter in Seattle and Amelia and Link both happen to be working the night shift. It’s around 5am when Link wraps up his last surgery and goes to find Amelia in the on-call room.
She’s dozing off in the dark room when he enters.
“Hey,” he mutters, approaching the bed. He shakes her shoulder gently. “You want a ride home?”
Amelia sits up slowly. “Mhm,” she mumbles.
When they get out to the parking lot, there’s so much snow they almost can’t find Link’s car. It’s still dark outside, the sun not yet rising, and they walk carefully through the lot until they see it.
Link opens the passenger side door for Amelia to get in and warm up while he shovels the snow off the car. When he finishes up and climbs into the driver’s side, he turns to Amelia and notices she’s dozed off again. He smiles to himself as he begins to drive.
The roads are slick and Link drives slowly down the main road. He curses to himself over the traffic, the road too busy for 5am.
Out of nowhere, the car drives over an unseen patch of ice, and Link loses control of the steering wheel. The car slides into the other lane quickly, and Link subconsciously reaches a protective hand out toward Amelia as he slams on the brakes. He gains control of the car again but slows down immensely.
The force of the moment causes Amelia to rouse from sleep. She sits up slightly, and that’s when Link notices.
Anger flashes through him hot and fast.
“Amelia!” he practically shouts, panicked by another slippery part of the road. “Amelia, put your seatbelt on!”
Amelia takes a moment to adjust to being awake, realizing her surroundings. “Shit,” she mumbles, “Okay…” She slowly pulls the seatbelt across her chest, clicking it into place and then staring ahead of her at the dangerous road ahead.
The car swerves unwillingly once more and Amelia grips her seat. She turns to Link, who has now gone red in the face out of anger and panic. “Dammit,” he mutters.
Silence falls between them as Link concentrates completely on the road. They are only about a mile from Meredith’s house, but at this rate, it was going to take them twenty minutes to get there.
Link sighs heavily, pulling Amelia’s attention once more. “What were you thinking?!” he mutters angrily. “Why wasn’t your seatbelt on?”
She blinks, pausing. “I...I’m sorry. I was asleep before you started driving. I didn’t even realize-”
“You should have had it on!” He cuts her off, voice raised again.
Amelia looks at him in disbelief. Completely taken aback by his reaction.
“Link, I-”
“Forget it, I’m sorry,” he mutters, gripping the steering wheel tightly.
“It’s on now,” Amelia whispers assuringly, gesturing toward the seatbelt and staring back ahead at the road.
“It’s on now,” Link repeats, more to himself.
Amelia looks at him, noticing his features begin to relax a bit.
“It’s on now,” he says again. “You’re okay.”
_______
4) “I don’t want anything bad to happen to you”
When Amelia finishes up a consult in the pit, she notices Link standing near the nurse’s station. She tries not to think about the instant smile that spreads across her face at the sight of him.
“Hi!” she approaches him.
“Well, hi,” he greets her. “How’s your day?”
“Good,” she grins, “uneventful….I was going to grab lunch in a bit. Want to join me?”
“Uhm,” he pauses, a weird look on his face. “I can’t today. I’ve got a thing.”
Amelia frowns at his sudden indifference.
“Rain check?” he offers, trying to seem upbeat.
“Sure,” she mumbles.
“Alright,” Link exclaims, setting down his tablet at the nurse’s station. “I’ve gotta go, I’ll see you later?”
Amelia frowns, watching Link turn away from her and toward the hallway.
“Wait, Link!” she calls after him, following him. “Your ‘thing’ is now?”
He stops in the empty hallway outside of the ER. “Yeah and I should really get going, I’m going to be late.” He smiles reassuringly. But it doesn’t work on Amelia.
“Wait, stop. What’s this thing?”
Link sighs, pausing again. “It’s just an appointment.”
“An appointment?” Amelia frowns, concerned.
Link just stares at her for a moment, before he explains. “It’s just a scan, Amelia. I get them once a year.”
“A scan?” she repeats, trying to catch up with her own thoughts.
Link just smiles at her again, gripping her shoulders comfortingly. “Yes, Amelia. That’s what happens when you beat cancer as a kid….You still have to go back in to make sure everything’s….still good. It’s just a regular checkup. Come on, you know that.”
Amelia nods. Yes, she knows that. But, for some reason she’s currently filled with dread. She smiles through the feeling. “Okay, go. Go. Don’t be late. I’ll see you later!”
_______
Later that night, Amelia stays over at Link’s apartment. The appointment went well. Nothing to be concerned about. But for some reason, Amelia is wide awake. A nagging feeling fills her chest as she stares up at the ceiling, Link snoring softly next to her.
She rolls into his side, nuzzling her face into his neck until he stirs awake.
“Hm?” he mumbles sleepily. Waiting until his eyes adjust. When they do, piercing blue eyes are staring into his. “What time is it?”
Amelia glances at the clock behind him. “2:30.”
“Why are you awake?”
Silence.
“Link,” Amelia breathes, and her voice is laced with vulnerability. “Will you let me know ahead of time, the next time you have an appointment?”
Link just stares at her in question.
“Amelia,” he speaks slowly, “what’s going on.”
“I just-” Even Amelia can hear her own voice falter as she speaks. “I don’t want anything bad to happen to you.”
“Oh, Amelia,” Link gasps, pulling her into him and squeezing her against his chest. “Everything is fine. Nothing bad is going to happen.”
“You don’t know that.”
“I know that for now.”
Silence falls between them again and Link starts to think Amelia has fallen asleep.
“Just tell me next time,” she whispers eventually.
Link rubs her back up and down comfortingly. “I will.”
_______
5) “I wanted to make sure you’re okay”
Link overhears it from an intern in the gallery. That ‘Dr. Shepherd had to leave in the middle of surgery,’ that she ‘almost threw up in the OR,’ that it was most likely ‘food poisoning.’
Link frowns as he listens to the interns gossip. He pulls his phone out to send a quick text to Amelia to check in.
He doesn’t hear back for an hour.
When an hour turns into two he decides to just drive over to Meredith’s when his shift ends.
When he gets there, Maggie answers the door. She lets him in and Link immediately makes his way to Amelia’s room. He knocks briefly before peeking his head in. Amelia rests back against the headboard, eyes opening as he makes his entrance.
“Hey,” she croaks, “What are you doing here?”
“I wanted to make sure you’re okay,” he states, taking in her appearance. Pale skin and dark circles under her eyes. She doesn’t look great. “You didn’t answer my text.”
“I’m sorry,” she mumbles. “I have such a bad headache I can’t even look at my phone.”
Link frowns, sitting on the end of her bed, near her feet.
“You think you have the flu? Or food poisoning or something?”
“Yeah, or something,” she mutters, trying to keep her eyes open.
“Okay,” Link thinks, “Can I get you anything? I’ll go to the store, what do you need?”
“Um,” she pauses. “I can’t think of anything I need right now.”
“Okay, well I’ll just go see what I can find. And I’ll check with Maggie, too.”
Amelia just hums at him appreciatively.
_______
Link re-enters Amelia’s bedroom an hour later.
“Alright,” he exclaims cheerfully. “So I went to the pharmacy. I got you ginger ale and anti-nausea,” he starts pulling items out of the grocery bag. “Advil for your head,” he continues.
Amelia smiles up at him as he starts setting the items down on her bedside table.
“Oh!” he laughs as he pulls the last item out. “And tampons for Maggie.”
Amelia’s eyes widen briefly at the mention of tampons. Link stares back at her. “What? Did I forget something?”
“No, no,” Amelia quickly responds, but Link notices the brief panic she’d tried to hide. “Thanks for getting all of that.”
_______
6) “I brought you breakfast”
When Amelia tells Link she’s pregnant, it happens quickly. In a rush. A passing moment in the stairwell.
It’s a shock to both of them. But, Link’s immediate concern is Amelia. How she’s dealing with it. He can tell it’s not quite real to her yet, like she’s still processing it. And he wants to be as supportive to her as he can be.
So while Amelia does what she can to process, Link does what he can to help. No matter the outcome of the situation, and what Amelia decides, he wants to be there for her in the moment.
So he starts with breakfast.
“I brought you breakfast,” he greets her as he walks into the lab.
Amelia groans.
“You have surgery in an hour, Amelia. You need to eat something.”
“I can’t keep anything down.”
Link sighs. He reaches to rest his hand on her shoulder and she avoids the contact completely. He frowns at this. “Here,” he pushes forward. “Drink some water first. Then maybe a power bar in like 20 minutes?”
Amelia lets a small smile play at her lips as he passes her a water bottle.
A few hours later he brings her a snack. This time he finds her headed to the ER and he stops her, handing her a banana and another water bottle.
Amelia rolls her eyes. “Stop doing this.”
“Stop avoiding it.”
They stubbornly hold eye contact for a moment before she finally takes the snack from his hands. She gives him a smirk before she turns away from him, continuing toward the ER.
“Amelia!” he calls after her, “I’m ready to talk later if you are!”
_______
7) “A little bit in love” / “I think I’m in love with you”
It takes time before the sentiment is actually spoken out loud. And even so, it isn’t fully realized. When Amelia says it for the first time, she tells Link not to say it back.
There’s a lot that factors into Amelia’s decision about the pregnancy. She’s riddled with anxiety and self-doubt when she opens up to Link about Christopher. She isn’t expecting Link’s reaction. And she especially isn’t expecting his words.
He says things that make her feel less scared. And “a little bit in love.”
And she pleads with him not to say it back.
_______
“I think I’m in love with you.”
Link does say it back. But it’s not a surprise. Because they’ve been saying it for so long without actually saying it.
“And I know you said not to say it back, but it’s not something I feel very often.”
Their light-hearted ‘gravity blanket’ situation had suddenly taken a more serious turn and Amelia, focusing her eyes on the ceiling above as she lay across Link’s chest, begins to realize just how much they have been saying lately.
She listens carefully as Link embarks on a similar realization. And she knows she doesn’t have to say it back. Not in those three words. Because there’s a million different ways to say ‘i love you.’
And they’ve both been saying it the whole time.
So this time, she settles for “okay,” and she places her hands on top of Link’s as they come to rest across the slowly forming curve in her waist.
There are a million different ways to tell someone you love them. Link and Amelia intended to try every possible way.

Classic Who Whumptober 2021 #24: Self-Induced Injuries to Escape
Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart and Harry
Both men jumped at the sound of an explosion in front another part of the industrial factory. The shockwave seemed to vibrate the floor beneath them. “Look out, Sullivan!” Alistair shouted out as part of the high and heavy shelving toppled over.
Harry, a little further from the danger, successfully jumped back as the metal shelves crashed down. But the other man… “Brigadier!” he cried out as his commanding officer disappeared under the shelves and the things on them. There wasn’t anything he could do except watch, his eyes wide. “Brigadier!”
Everything settled quickly, and Harry moved forward, searching for any sign of Alistair.
“Over here!” came the strained and muffled voice.
Harry started to carefully step over and around the debris towards Alistair’s voice.
Under the debris, Alistair tried to pull his arm from between two broken and very heavy items. He winced and instantly stopped. The object on the outside on his arm was sharp, the point had pierced through his sleeves and shallowly into the skin. He tried to wiggle his arm enough, but there was no space for it.
“Sir! Are you alright?” came the muffled voice from above and a little distance away.
“Alive,” Alistair responded. “Although I may be stuck.”
“Stuck? Stuck how?”
“My left arm. It’s pinned between two things, I can’t tell what they are, but one is sharp.” Alistair cleared his throat. “Can you see me at all?”
Harry took more steps around, looking for any parts of the familiar uniform while also sing the voice to pinpoint him. When he thought he’d found the spot, he hesitantly lifted a light object, and smiled in relief at the green fabric underneath. “Found you, sir.” He lightly laid a hand on the other’s back.
“Well, that’s something,” Alistair remarked to the physical contact. “Can you get anything else off me?”
It took a few minutes of tentative moving things around before half of the man was uncovered. “That’s all I think I can safely do, sir.”
Alistair carefully moved his free arm up. Then he maneuvered his knees up under him. “Now for the other one.” He hoped that with some of the debris around him moved, he’d be able to unpin his arm. He winced when the next attempted pull caused whatever sharp metal piece to cut a short line into his flesh. “Still stuck, I’m afraid.”
Harry tried to move other things, but everything left was too heavy or too awkward for him to do on his own. He didn’t want to risk touching anything else, because it could also cause more things to fall on Alistair. “I’m sorry, sir. I don’t know what else to move.” They were alone here, so he offered, “I can radio for back-up to come.”
Alistair grunted in frustration. “That’ll take hours. And we really need to be getting a move on.”
“Sir, I don’t-“
“How equipped are you able to handle a large gash?”
“You’re bleeding?”
“I will be, quite badly I reckon.”
“You can’t be considering-“ The smell of smoke reached Harry’s nose. “Oh, that’s not good.” He could hear a little crackle in the distance where the explosion had happened.
“What now?” Alistair asked.
“I think there’s a fire. Not unexpected, considering, but-“
“Right, that settles it. Lieutenant, I’m relying on you to make certain I don’t pass out from blood loss.”
“Normally, I’d advise against that, but with a fire on the way…” Harry wished he had time to go get his kit from the jeep, but there wasn’t time. He could handle it. He patted Alistair’s lower back.
Alistair took three deep breaths to steel himself for what he was about to do. Then he moved back and pulled. A loud long cry of pain accompanied the sound of ripping fabric. He didn’t let himself stop, clenching his teeth through the pain, knowing it would take him more time to steel himself again.
And then he was free, falling backwards and cradling his injured arm and hand to his chest. Harry immediately crouched beside him, gently taking his arm to do a quick examination.
The torn sleeves of Alistair’s uniform hung off his arm, more than just the edges of the jagged tear stained dark red. He hissed at the sight of the long bloody gash.
“Doesn’t look too deep, but it will definitely need stitches.”
“At least I didn’t have to break it,” Alistair muttered through clenched teeth.
Harry quickly wrapped the torn sleeves to cover as much of the wound as it could and told Alistair to hold it tightly. Then he took his other hand and pulled the injured man to his feet. “The sooner we get out of here, the sooner I can take care of it.”
Alistair took a deep and shaky breath. “Lead on, Sullivan.”
