So what does white passing look like in America today? I have largely switched to saying white-presenting as opposed to white passing. The historical context of white passing is rooted in violence and disenfranchisement of fair-skinned Black Americans. However, we cannot acknowledge this without mentioning colorism, when light-skinned Black people and white Americans tend to turn their internalized racism towards darker-skinned Black people. For example, there was a higher monetary value set for enslaved people who were light-skinned, and even historically, Black sororities and fraternities have been known to show colorism in member selection. (Nova Southeastern University). Even today, light-skinned Black Americans are less likely to encounter the same barriers as their darker-skinned counterparts (Time).

I'm native but extremely white presenting. The one part of me that 'looks native' is my hair. But, I'm literally ruining it by tugging as hard as I can on it when upset/having a meltdown/anxious. So, now I feel like I'm disrespecting my ancestors and hurting more people than myself as I previously thought. Please stop using white PASSING and white PRESENTING interchangeably. Those are two different things.

White PASSING is when you can be seen as white.

White PRESENTING is when you’re doing everything in your power to be perceived as white.

You can be passing without presenting. But you can’t being presenting without passing.

This is a more nuanced conversation than I can and can’t add to, but it’s. A conversation that needs to be had.

Passing vs. Presenting will changed depending on context. Meaning if it’s in the black community, then the context of ( let’s say) Hasley and Logic being a white passing mixed person will have a different weight than ( let’s say) being passing or presenting as someone’s who’s Filipino and German.

Context matters, and this is a debatable( so to speak) topic. But do remember that these terms are started within the Black community and is rooted in slavery.

Does this make sense?

Also learn the difference between being perceived as white passing or presenting and IDENTIFYING as white passing or presenting. Like you can be perceived and not identify as such.

I really find it interesting how Zionists have no issues constantly using words like "Islamic" or "Islamist" or "jihadist" to describe the people they're killing without any fear of being accused of Islamophobia or that they're being bigots.

Because they know that we live in a world where anything or anyone remotely "Muslim" are automatically portrayed as inherently evil and deserving of death, especially in the US and other Western countries where Israel gets most of its support from them. So therefore, no one can be mad at them for killing all of these people, right? After all, they're only killing scary radical "Islamists" and "jihadists," NOT innocent people.

Meanwhile you would never hear any pro-Palestine people calling IDF soldiers "Jewists" or "Jewish extremists," even when they're literally branding the star of David onto Palestinians' faces and houses, instead we have to be very careful to not associate Judaism with Israel's crimes and are obligated to write a long essay about how we in fact do NOT want to kill every Jew in the world before we're allowed to show a shred of sympathy toward the thousands of Palestinian civilians being murdered as we are speaking.

A Handy guide on if you are just racially white or white presenting/passing

this is not an exclusive guide, it can only be determined by an individual of their identity, however i know there is a lot of confusion on being racially white & non european or being a racially ambiguous white presenting/passing person. this is mainly a guide for white passing/presenting people who i've seen are confused on their identity and need some basic guidelines!

White presenting is used to refer to any ethnic group. White passing is used specifically to refer to the Black diaspora.

So,

First thing is first, what are you ethnically? If the answer is anything mixed with non-european (Grandparents or closer, being 100%), you can be classed as an ethnic minority.

Now, how often are you perceived? As a white person? As your non-european heritage?

Is there any "what are you *really*?" questions, any follow-up questions when you say that you are a white person?

If the answer is:

You are solely perceived as white, you are a racially white ethnic minority.

You are perceived as your non-european heritage an equal amount of times you are perceived as white, you're white passing/presenting poc.

You are perceived solely as your ethnic minority, you are poc - no white presenting/passing labels.

You are perceived an equal amount white and non-european, with follow up questions or doubt about being 100%/racially white - you're white passing/presenting poc and racially ambiguous.

You are perceived only as non-european identities, with follow up questions about what kind of brown/black/East Asian you are - you're racially ambiguous and poc.

This must also take into account your race in your home countries, the country and environment you grew up in, and the country and environment you currently live in - to form your racial identity as accurately as possible.
