both angel the series and buffy the vampire slayer have characters who are fun villains that struggle with being in love with their enemies with benefits and refer to themselves as “evil” often. are introduced with a partner of the opposite gender who leaves by end of the second season but comes back into town for a bit in the fifth season. when their enemy with benefits breaks up with them they say something like “i’ve heard this song before” (but then that time it’s for real) and the scene makes me so sad for them. works with people who cause apocalypses but doesn’t particularly want to see one happen. is sometimes dressed in “black and white” clothing as symbolism for their morality compared to other characters. once dressed in the outfit of their enemy-with-benefits' more wholesome love interest to attract said enemy like it's some kind of weird drag. experiences… discrimination in the workplace. makes out with titular character. flirty interaction with faith lehane. gets a villain’s damn finger poked into their chest while on their back and is saved by their love interest; once saved they reveal something that helps protect a teenager related to the protagonist. has/had a sick mom. my friend.

Never not thinking about how Buffy has to beg and plead for Angel to not let the sun kill him when the first was tormenting him with what he’s done and that fact that soul or no soul he still wants to hurt Buffy and he concludes the only way he won’t is to kill himself….. and the only reason he didn’t dust was the storm and he was fully gonna let her watch him die again because he couldn’t face what a worthless piece of shit and a monster even with the soul he really is (and then suddenly they’re back together even though Buffy said they couldn’t be together anymore like RIGHT before all this so essentially Angel threatens to kill himself and then suddenly he and Buffy are back together 🙃 i hate it here)

Riley was gonna let himself die rather than become even weaker than Buffy while she again begs for him to stop being a whiny attention seeking toddler and grow the fuck up and do what he needs to do so he won’t DIE (my words not hers obviously lol) and when that doesn’t work and she still doesn’t “pay enough attention to him or need him enough” in his eyes while she’s ya know being the slayer, raising her sister and taking care of her sick mother…. He cheats on her in a way that again threatens his own life and the lives of everyone he could easily kill in her life if he were to be turned and when THAT doesn’t work he threatens to leave forever unless she forgives him IMMEDIATELY

And Spike who is the only one to actually die after she again is pleading you don’t have to do this “no there’s still time you’ve done enough” because Spike knows Buffy doesn’t deserve “good enough” Buffy deserves everything, she deserves to be free of the hellmouth even though that means they can’t be together and he’ll die

Two man-children who threaten to kill themselves because they can’t handle what they’ve done or that they’re not as strong as they think they are and drag an overburdened and traumatized young woman they had no business even dating in the first place along for their self-destructive ride vs a man who literally already sacrificed everything he was to become someone she could love without guilt, sacrificing everything he fought to become, for her and her beloved world she loves so much and fights so hard to protect.

THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE TWO MEN WHO THREATEN DEATH VS THE MAN WHO ACTUALLY DIED AND THE VASTLY DIFFERENT CIRCUMSTANCES SURROUNDING THESE THREE EVENTS 😭😭😭

Fem Giyuu x Raiden- First Meetings

For my dear friend @an-idyllic-novelist

-It was supposed to be a time for celebration, the beginning of the year was usually the biggest time in Valhalla for sumo tournaments.

-The rikishi had been training all year to compete for the top spot, or at least a spot in the top match, as no matter how hard any of them worked, they could never reach Raiden’s level, it wasn’t fair- but many of them knew how hard he did work while training…when he wasn’t flirting, drinking, or eating.

-However, as Valhalla rang in the New Year and everyone made plans to enjoy the sumo matches, all was not well with the rikishi.

-Someone or something had been killing them- mutilating their bodies, it almost looked like they had been eaten, or half eaten in this case.

-There were no witnesses, no clues other than the bodies looking like they had been torn apart and many were calling for the tournament to be called off, not wanting to risk the lives of any more of the wrestlers.

-There were many others, who didn’t want to stop the tournament, but they couldn’t argue the facts that men were dying, brutally.

-Some new faces started popping up around the various stables, introducing themselves as Demon Slayers, and they were investigating these deaths, claiming that demons were the cause.

-Raiden had never met a demon before, so he didn’t know if this was true or not, but he stayed out of their way, focusing on his training instead, because if he trained hard then he could play hard~

-None of them realized that the demon was in their midst, hiding as different wrestlers, as he would eat them, using his ability to take on their form until he needed his next meal, going to the next wrestler.

-When he saw Raiden… it was like heaven’s gates opened to him, seeing such a prime example of strength, he knew that he would be unstoppable if he could eat someone like Raiden!

-The issue was getting close to him, as only those who believed they could stand up to him got to be close to him, in the ring, and this demon was intimidated, seeing the raw strength, he had to be careful not to be killed beforehand, else his hard work would be for nothing.

-With strengthened security, the tournament went off without a hitch and soon the final match was here, Raiden vs. what he thought was another rikishi, one who had been surprisingly strong throughout the tournament.

-Raiden felt something was wrong, seeing his opponent jerking and convulsing, as the demon was trying, in vain, to keep his disguise, but he had used up so much of his energy to win his fights so he could get to Raiden that he was unable to keep his disguise.

-Women and men were screaming out in fear, seeing this grotesque creature appearing as he snarled out, baring his fangs and claws as Raiden glared, “Are you the one who has been killing my rivals?!”

-The demon just sneered, leering up at Raiden, “So what if I have~ once I eat your flesh- there will be no stopping me.” he then went to lunge at Raiden before they heard a woman’s voice, “Tanjiro get the civilians to safety- Nezuko with me!”

-Raiden turned and his eyes instantly widened, seeing a Demon Slayer rushing towards him with a young girl with a bamboo piece over her mouth, as another Demon Slayer, a younger boy, was herding people away from the area.

-Raiden had never seen such a woman, she seemed to radiate power, she was stunningly beautiful, but had a stoic face- she looked so calm facing off with such a monster. It made Raiden curious about what horrors she had seen to not be afraid.

-Raiden was not expecting to be taken off his feet by this little girl, Nezuko, who leapt into his chest, knocking him back, without hurting him, getting him away from the demon while Y/N rushed in, drawing her sword as the demon charged her, “You’re not taking him from me!”

-Giyuu was calm, easily slicing through his neck, “He is not yours to take.” The demon was shocked, seeing how easily he had been defeated as he started to dissolve into a pile of ash.

-Raiden was stunned, holding Nezuko, who now looked smaller than when he first saw her, as she was playing with one of his giant hands, watching Giyuu sheath her sword before turning, her haori blowing back, showing off her alluring figure and the slit by her thigh, showing the smooth looking skin off.

-Y/N approached, kneeling down as Nezuko left the giant man, rushing into the older woman’s arms to hug her around her neck as the Hashira spoke to him, “Are you all right?”

-There was no hesitation, “Will you marry me?!” Y/N, Nezuko, and Tanjiro all turned white in shock, hearing his bold statement, before recovering as Y/N stood, looking over at Tanjiro, “Call the medics- it seems he is in shock.”

-Raiden was stunned, seeing that she didn’t believe him as he scrambled to his feet, “I’m serious- you were amazing out there! You took down that thing so easily! You’re amazing and I want to stand by your side!”

-Y/N was surprised, hearing that he wanted to stand by her and not the other way around, as most men wanted women by their side.

-However… “Please hurry Tanjiro- I believe he injured his head.” Raiden sputtered, “I’m serious!!” he would continue to pursue her, not understanding why she wouldn’t believe him that he really did want to marry her!

-Raiden never backed down from a fight and he wasn’t going to start now!

Eliza Dushku Vs. Chloe Annett

Eliza Dushku - (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Tru Calling) - Eliza Dushku as Faith in Buffy the vampire slayer was one of my biggest crushes as a kid! And buffy/faith was my first ever ship! She just had this magnetism to her - i couldn't take my eyes off of her. Such a beautiful woman.

Chloe Annett - (Red Dwarf, Crime Traveller) - She played the second (alternate universe) version of Kristine Kochanski in sci-fi comedy Red Dwarf in the late 1990s. There were a lot of factors against her - the first version is the popular but rarely seen Navigation Officer ex-girlfriend of protagonist Dave Lister. Cast as a regular rather than a long-lost fantasy, Chloe had to create a character in her own right who was both attractive to Lister and not interested in him romantically because she has her own very different version of him in her own dimension. She absolutely succeeded. Her character is highly intelligent, unhappy with the situation she's stuck in but making the best of it and is by no means a Manic Pixie Dream Girl but a real person.

for the AMA: what compels you most in a fictional character!

rage as a trauma response.

it compels me when a character spits in the face of god. when the response isn't "why did you let all this happen" but "how dare you let this happen." something about the assertion of agency in the wake of un-meaning. something about "there was never a Purpose, the point is what you make of it." this is undoubtedly because i was raised evangelical and continue to struggle with what i believe vs what i want to be true. pero also i think i was denied anger for so long (and even now my reflex when i'm hurt is to divert/repress/hide/sublimate anger) that it's cathartic for SOMEONE to get to be mad at the powers that be.

misogyny means it's usually (white) male characters who get these narrative arcs. this is evident in my blorbos: astarion from bg3, the corinthian from sandman, will graham from hannibal. (my immediate first thought was actually emilio sandoz from the sparrow, very literal autistic brain serving me well here lmao, what does it mean to be god's whore.) but my favorite female and genderqueer characters have this, too. saga anderson from alan wake 2 (LITERALLY tells both the in-game narrative force and the meta "fuck off, i'm done with other people writing my story"). essun from the broken earth trilogy (everyone who says they can't connect to her...i need you to examine yourself for misogynoir). vic from nos4a2. eurydice from hadestown. erica slaughter from something is killing the children. jade from my heart is a chainsaw.

(horror is obviously a huge medium for this...the final girl is a figure of righteous anger, the avenging angel, the woman who mows down the ultimate horror with a baseball bat or a butcher knife and she's right, she's in the right, she's the monster slayer, fuck you fear me.)

Sophie Deveraux vs. Buffy Summers

Remember: don't vote on "who would win in a fight", but on "who, when given a task that fits her skillset and talents, would do that task better: more comprehensively, faster, with more pizzazz, with less collateral, etc."

Endorsements! "What is she good at?"

Sophie Deveraux, Leverage: Give her the right stage, and she can be anyone. She can change character on a dime; she can read people from just a passport photo, she came to her own funeral - twice! - in the certain knowledge people wouldn't recognize her because she was acting. She oozes style (just not always the same style), and despite her good looks, she isn't just a pretty face - and in Leverage Redemption, well into her forties or even past fifty, she is still perceived to be hot and desirable, a woman in her prime!

Buffy Summers, Buffy the Vampire Slayer: At the age of sixteen, she has more experience at her job than her mentor, and pretty much every other character on the show for that matter. Over the course of the show she saves the world at least ten times, defeats a literal god, and fundamentally reshapes the system that made her a child soldier in the first place, all while dealing with intense trauma and eventually, crippling suicidal depression. She's a good leader and is usually the one to come up with the battle plans (despite, and I cannot stress this enough, being a teenager and young adult who has a grown ass man for a mentor). She's also a very skilled fighter, and she improves from season to season. And in later seasons she has to accomplish all this while also raising her teenage sister and working fast food.

She's not perfect. For one thing she's a teenager and for another, as it turns out, crippling depression is in fact crippling. But even at her worst she's almost always competent as a slayer. Plus, her hair and make-up are consistently on point. (thank you tumblr user @comradesummers )

You could never love somebody like her! And what’s worse is that you can’t confide to your own sister since she has become just as bad. You’ve seen it, the arguments Mitsuri has with Shinobu over you that you’re inches away from cutting off ties from her, rather she be your big sister or not. Mitsuri’s possessive nature over you as she grips your hand and glares deathly daggers at her enemies has you angrily pulling away and stomping from her

Mitsuri cried her heart out when you finally yelled at her for her new twisted behaviour and she immediately ran to Obanai for comfort, her little brother hates her. The way she has been acting lately been worsening your fear, your anxiety and your growing depression as Shinobu is a one whole problem on her own, Mitsuri piling up has made the situation so unbelievably horrible, you’ve been spiralling quickly in a depressive hell

It doesn’t help that Obanai barked at you only hours after snapping at Mitsuri, for snapping at Mitsuri. You just went off at Obanai for trying to paint you as the bad guy when you’re the victim of two vile women trying to control you and shape you into what you are not. Their little wooden toy! Obanai didn’t listen to you at all as he cursed you out, he only cared about how Mitsuri feels and you knew arguing with him was useless as you dragged yourself into your room

Your mind recalling every cruel word Obanai threw you at as you crawled into the futon and cried yourself to sleep. That very event was the cause of your depression, all because you tried your best to defend yourself from your psycho sister, you became mentally unwell and you lost the motivation to get up out of bed every morning so quickly, it concerned both Shinobu and Mitsuri

Growling out to be heard by Shinobu, you swiped a hand at the insane woman to try make her back up but she wasn’t fazed by the fingertips missing by a single oxygen molecule. Her twisted smile never faded as her soft mature voice rung out, her much smaller hands grabbing yours to rub against her warm blushy cheek. “What’s wrong, my love? Let me fix you, you must be sick” Shinobu was about to speak but she was interrupted by a loud slam of the room door being flung open, possibly ripped back by a powerful force

“Dokusha! Please don’t hate me! I love you so much!” Mitsuri cried out suddenly, her lime green eyes puffy and red with tears flooding out, as she full-force pushed Shinobu away from you to replace her with her, not failing to basically throw the smaller weaker woman almost metres away to sit down before you. Grabbing your hand and sobbing outloud. She couldn’t sit back and let her relationship with you be destroyed for good!

You hissed, averting your eyes as veins grew on your neck and wrist. Thanks to sharing the same genes as the strong young woman, your own strength was elevated to beyond natural and you were able to rip your wrist free from her grasp. “Stay away from me… you beast… you freak…” You whispered heartbroken, dark racoon-like bags under your eyes as you avoided looking into hers

Once Shinobu recovered from her brief daze on the floor behind you two, anger boiled deeply in her bloodstream as she tackled Mitsuri. Verbal arguments? No more, this time. Shinobu was ready to take Mitsuri’s life to make sure she can’t keep you away from her. You sobbed gently, pushing yourself up against the nearby corner to try shy away from the actual fist fight beginning. Mitsuri defended herself by tossing Shinobu off her back and charged, throwing a wet slap at her, instead of a punch. Despite the fact Shinobu did swing on her

You couldn’t do anything about what is truly happening as you just sit back and cry into your hands as the two women scream and hit each other. God, what you would give to be able to get out of this hell but nobody can save you, they will never leave you alone and you can’t convince anybody around to believe your remarks. So this is like the beginnings of a thought so bare with me and it’s very important you don’t take this post literally because I’m not saying there is anything actually sketchy about Buffy and Giles’ relationship but rather the Slayer/Watcher dynamic the council wants there to be and how it mimics heterosexual marriages in A LOT of ways so bare with me!

Thinking about how The Council (said with so much disdain and loathing) is OBSESSED with the slayer being ALONE. THE ONE. No friends - no family - just a watcher and her. And how that dynamic mimics cis-het patriarchal relationships our society is shoving down our throats as “the ideal” (watcher/slayer obviously being without the romantic/sexual aspect but honestly so many of my relationships with men have ended up being them trying to control me and harness my power for their own gain which isn’t love so really how different is it??) but, society is always pushing women to pair off with a man and “settle down.” Aka become overburdened with so much responsibility taking care of others with no support system you have no time or energy for yourself or to do anything to change our patriarchal society.

But both in the Buffyverse and in the real world - a woman (slayer) being isolated with just a man (watcher) can lead to unnecessary harm or early death for her.

These kinds of dynamics can absolutely occur within any relationship regardless of gender identity or sexual orientation because unlearning gender roles takes WORK but for the sake of the comparison between Slayer/Watcher and Wife/Husband I’ll be using women/men language

Many of us have lived the experience of your friends or you getting boyfriends or husbands and literally vanishing from the friend group (made even worse if the man is an abuser or controlling) essentially cutting us off from our community which makes it easier to mistreat and manipulate us. Thinking about the viral weaponized incompetence song on tik tok that literally was ending marriages and relationships and the demonization of “gossiping” which is ESSENTIAL to women’s safety as we have seen with private FB groups in different areas posting allll the details they can about men who they had terrible relationships or dates with and behaviors so other women can avoid the same pain or protect their safety. Community is essential. Just having “your man” can have a severe tax on your emotional and physical health (we know the stats that single women are happiest and single moms have less labor and more free time than married moms)

Buffy is always credited for lasting as long as she did because she rejected the idea of being isolated with just a watcher who according to the council, isn’t supposed to actually love and care for the slayer but remain impartial - thinking about the shit men get when they show they actually love/respect/care for their wives which seems unfortunately rare but when it does happen they get called simp and whipped (derogatory) by the patriarchy at large.

So yeah just noting the themes of women being isolated with just a man vs having a community impacting health and longevity in Buffy and how aptly that reflects our society in the US showing how the council literally represents the patriarchy and watchers are meant to be the “keepers” of these powerful young women which is exactly what the patriarchy wants our husbands to be and how harmful that framework is for us.

They are the cutest and wholesome couple. This man loves his woman no matter what and he gives her green socks and he stays by her side, when they die and they have a happy family at the end.

It was embarrassing that Japan makes the best and wholesome couples in Anime and Manga, without glorifying abuse and toxic relationship. While in America, their stupid webcomics is just fetish and glorifying abuse and toxic relationship for their YA audiences, heck even in kid’s cartoons like “Courage the Cowardly Dog” show’s little kids that abuse and toxic relationships is not okay to have. Happy Birthday Scottish actor Ewen Bremner, born January 23rd 1972 in Edinburgh.

Bremner has worked with many of the most respected directors in world cinema, including Danny Boyle, Mike Leigh, Ridley Scott, Joon-Ho Bong, Werner Herzog and Woody Allen. Hen has established himself by creating unique characters in critically acclaimed films, as well as going toe to toe with many of Hollywood's biggest stars.

Ewen had worked widely in theatre, television, and film for years before being cast in his breakout role in Trainspotting, by Oscar-winning director Danny Boyle. He was the first to be cast in the role of Mark Renton in Edinburgh's Traverse Theatre production but lost out to Ewan McGregor in the film version, instead he was handed the role of Spud Murphy and earned screen immortality with his character's infamous "speed fuelled" job interview scene.

Prior to Trainspotting, Bremner gave a striking performance in Mike Leigh's Naked, fellow Scot Susan Vidler played his girlfriend Maggie in this excellent film.

In 1999, Bremner received critical acclaim for his portrayal of a schizophrenic man living with his dysfunctional family in Harmony Korine's Julien, Donkey-Boy. Filmed strictly in accordance with the ultra-realist tenants of Lars Von Trier's Dogma 95 movement and starring opposite Werner Herzog, Bremner played Julien its eponymous hero, requiring him to assume an American accent. He then worked with director Michael Bay in his high-profile 2001 war film Pearl Harbor, proving his versatility once again by portraying the role of a wholeheartedly patriotic American soldier fighting in WWII. The following year, he stepped back into fatigues for a supporting role in Ridley Scott's Black Hawk Down, while rounding out the next several years with roles in high-profile Hollywood releases such as The Rundown, Disney's Around the World in 80 Days), AVP: Alien vs. Predator, Woody Allen's Match Point, the comedy Death at a Funeral directed by Frank Oz, and Fool's Gold starring Matthew McConaughey and Kate Hudson.

This past few of years proved to be a busy when Bremner was invited to join the DC Universe in the Zack Snyder-produced feature Wonder Woman, directed by Patty Jenkins, co-starring Gal Gadot and Chris Pine. Ewen also reprised his unforgettable role as Spud in the highly-anticipated sequel to Danny Boyle's cult classic, T2: Trainspotting

Bremner appeared in the TNT Drama Series Will with Shekhar Kapur. The series told the story of the lost years of young William Shakespeare after his arrival to London in 1589 but only lasted one season. Other notable film credits include Woody Allen's You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger, Perfect Sense starring again alongside Ewan McGregor, Great Expectations, Jack the Giant Slayer, and Snowpiercer starring alongside Chris Evans and Tilda Swinton. Further credits include Exodus: Gods and Kings, Wide Open Spaces, Mojo, Mediator, Faintheart, Hallam Foe, Sixteen Years of Alcohol, and Snatch.

In television, Ewen has worked on many acclaimed productions including David Hare's Worriker trilogy starring Bill Nighy for BBC, Jimmy McGovern's Moving On and also his Australian mini-series Banished, Strike Back for Sky TV, Dominic Savage's Dive, the Dylan Thomas biopic, A Poet In New York and the adaptation of Day of the Triffids for the BBC. Other noteworthy series appearances include portraying legendary surrealist Salvador Dali in the U.K. television drama Surrealissimo: The Trial of Salvador Dali, and a guest spot on the successful NBC series, My Name is Earl, not to forget an early appearance in Taggart way back in 1990.

Latley Ewen has been one of a number of Scottish actors who are backing a campaign to reopen the Film House cinema in Edinburgh, he has a couple of projects on the go just now, Bluefish, which takes us around the globe to tell stories of people trying to break out of their bubbles of isolation, which I take to mean the Covid pandemic, he also has a film on the go called Roo, but there is nothing to report on that just now.
