#wwx is so fucking hard to write

one of my very least favorite "jokes" is people making fin of qin su for "not knowing her husband is gay" or the array of fics where he's zero eprcent interested in her from the jump. Like way to take out all the tragedy in service of biphobia
GODDDDDD, I saw that in the same set of post notes that set me off yesterday--"durr hurr, poor girl got tricked into marrying this gay guy." Like, HOW? The Jin clan are by far the wealthiest and most powerful sect, and the Qin clan is one of their bannermen, and QCY and JGS are buddies. If JGY were a mustache-twirling villain trying to boost his status with an advantageous marriage and/or a gay man desperate for a beard, he has better options than a clan of middling wealth and significance that is already under Lanling's sphere of influence.
And they both had to fight for this marriage to happen! "QS was tricked into marrying him" is wild to me, because IIRC it says RIGHT THERE that she took the initiative in this relationship! A relationship that neither her father nor his was super enthused about! JGY was out here bothering JGS for this! JGY, the guy who famously does atrocities if daddy says jump, worked with QS to make sure this marriage happened! After all, while QS has the most to lose if the pregnancy plan goes south, JGY's not totally off the hook either; JGS could've very well punished him to appease QCY. Why the hell would he go through ANY of that if he didn't love her?
Like... you could maybe make a case for him not being attracted to her in CQL, where it's implied that he didn't sleep with her until their wedding night and he hates every second of it a choice that haunts me every day because what the fuck what the FUCK. But even there, he states that he pushed for the marriage, and feared to call it off in part because he'd "spent so much effort, went through such lengths to ask Qin Cangye for permission to marry his daughter... I had finally satisfied both Qin Cangye and Jin Guangshan." So even here he'd worked for it! Potentially antagonizing two noblemen, one of whom is his father the Chief Cultivator, is not worth the potential material benefits here! Even here, the only explanation that makes sense is that he loves her!
Which, you know, he says himself that he does. He says that he loves her to Lan Xichen's face, even, so like... pretty weird lie for a gay guy to tell his boyfriend. And if JGY were lying about everything... wouldn't he think of something better? He could throw QS under the bus and say she forced him. He could say the marriage was his father's idea and JGS directly ordered him to marry her. Both of these options are more readily understandable (and paint him as truly without recourse) than "I felt trapped by the potential ramifications of defying social expectations."
Now, people can write what they want when it comes to fic; if you're writing a canon divergence fix-it, then yeah, an easy way to avoid the incest is to have him simply not into women at all. You can even make a compelling case for comphet that he doesn't recognize for what it is until it's too late if you try hard enough. But in terms of broader trends rather than individual fic, and given the fandom trends of erasing WWX's attraction to women across all canons, or ignoring WQ's whole situation with JC in CQL canon to make her a Mean Lesbian(TM)... are you sure there's not biphobia at play? Are you really sure?

Jiang cheng for the ask game
Also asked my @jcs-singular-slut-strand my beloved <3<3<3 and another anon, i'll just put it here. this needs a lot more jin ling but i'm tired sorry
Favourite thing about them: the fact that jiang cheng isn't a genius like wwx. he works hard and he fails and he's still so fucking amazing. he's sandu shengshou, he's sect leader jiang, he's zidian's wielder, he's fucking amazing. jiang cheng goes from this:
the most laughable one was the Yunmeng Jiang Sect, the people of which either had been killed or had scattered, leaving only Jiang Cheng, who was younger than even Lan XiChen and was still a child born yesterday, who had nobody in his hands but still dared call himself sect leader, holding up the banner of rebellion as he recruited new disciples.
to one of the most feared people in the world. everyone needs to clap for him.
propoganda : sect leader jiang convincing rogue cultivators to join, the dichotomy of our poor little dangereuse meow meow, he's trying so hard but he's going the wrong way, man believes his big brother so deeply even when he wants him dead, his fearsome reputation comes from killing his brother but gosh he will cry if you mention that,
Least favourite thing about them: not a least favourite thing tbh just--i so badly wanted the reverse core reveal man. i wanted jiang cheng to throw it in wei wuxian's face that he sacrificed himself first. i know it's not his character, and it's better that way, but i want him to- and then i wanna see the devastation on wwx's face. delicious
Favourite line: this post has that variation of my father picked me five times in my entire life and it made me happy for months that i cannot bring myself to write so you should just click on the link. also, devastation->
Tumblr media Tumblr media
the absolute variations of Wei Wuxian!
Don’t you understand? When you’re standing on their side, you’re the bizarre genius, the miraculous hero, the force of the rebellion, the flower that blooms alone. But the second your voice differs from theirs, you’ve lost your mind, you’ve ignored morality, you’ve walked the crooked path. You think you can be immune to all those condemnations as you stay outside of the world and do whatever you want? No such precedent has happened before!
Why do you want his forehead ribbon? To hang yourself and commit suicide? I can lend you my belt, you’re welcome.
Go ahead. What other bad news do you have to report?
something something If you insist on protecting them(the Wen side branch), then I can't protect you
brOTP: Jiang Cheng & Jin Ling. that's his jiujiu, man. you can fucketh right off if you wanna say anything bad. i would love love an explored dynamic between Jiang Cheng & Lan Qiren. also a possible wen ning & jiang cheng or lan wangji & jiang cheng but we are not gonna see it happen in this cannon lmao.
OTP: chengxian. here's why one, two, three, four (gif), five, six, seven (gif), eight (thoughts on different wavelengths), the absolute circles of them saving each other, the fucking golden core reveal scene. golden scene reveal part 2, between this and jonsa, i'm never beating the incest allegations
edit: jiang cheng will always forgive wei wuxian
nOTP: i started out with jiang cheng/lan xichen... but i don't really see it anymore. but i don't hate it either, i will read fics for it if i like the writing.
Random headcanon:
lichtenberg scars. many of them, glowing whenever he uses zidian. here's where i got it from.
man is a savant at politics even if he's loud and angry.
yunmeng jiang absolutely adores their sect leader. i will love you forever if you send me recs all of them. pretend i haven't read a single one.
Lan Qiren has a favourite student that year and his name was not LWJ. Person had the same initials as Jesus Christ.
Unpopular Opinion: liking Jiang Cheng itself might be an unpopular opinion, tbh. but. let me punch wen ning just once. once. i'm sure he's done nothing wrong in his life ever. but please. once
Song I associate with them: zero idea. i'll get back to you on this.
Favourite picture of them:
babey! i think we're underestimating the potential of disney princess jiang cheng // that's his whole damn world he loves them so much // the shepherd's favourite lamb vibes.

Restless Rewatch: The Untamed, Episode 39 part 2
(Masterpost) (Pinboard)  (whole thing on AO3)
Tumblr media
Warning! Spoilers for all 50 Episodes!
Tumblr's godawful new editor has a hard limit of 30 images in a post, so I'm splitting this episode into 3 posts instead of 2. There's a lot of important gazing in this part of the episode and 30 images isn't going to cut it. (To be fair, the old editor would start to die after about 35 images)
Funeral Time
We start off at A-Qing's funeral. The gang has found a spot right next to the road to bury her, and has managed to pull together an impressive set of funeral accoutrements.
Tumblr media
A well-prepared cultivator always travels with apples, oranges, peaches, ceramic bowls, incense sticks, sand for holding the incense sticks, candles, a sanded & finished board for carving names into, and paper money.
It's nice of them to make sure A-Qing has a proper grave with proper offerings. You know who they don't bury properly? Shishu Xiao Fucking Xingchen, that's who. Do better, Wei Wuxian.
Tumblr media
Jingyi and Ouyang Zichen ugly-cry while Jin Ling threatens the already-dead Xue Yang with being bitten by his dog, to Wei Wuxian's discomfort.
Tumblr media
The three adults on the scene don't cry at the grave or even look distressed, really; after the shit they've been through, they probably don't have a lot of feelings to spare for a stranger, even Wei Wuxian, who feels for everybody.
And Lan Wangji is busy with some important gazing.
Tumblr media
Lan Wangji is having feelings; feelings about how it's a lot better to be Lan Wangji than it is to be Song Lan. He looks earnestly and intensely at Wei Wuxian and says "fortunately" or "how fortunate" (幸好, xìnghǎo), and then gazes even more earnestly at him.
(More after the cut!)
Tumblr media
Wei Wuxian can be forgiven for not getting what Lan Wangji is saying here, because Lan Wangji isn't actually saying most of it. From WWX's perspective, a fresh grave is probably an unlikely place for a confession of love or anything like it, although by Lan Wangji's standards this is a romantic idyll compared to the various caves where they've had most of their dates.
Tumblr media
Wei Wuxian asks him to explain, but the qiankun bag of cock blocking suddenly distracts Lan Wangji, and that's the end of that conversation. They tell everyone to wait while they go back to the coffin house.
Tumblr media
Wen Ning watches them go, wondering what the fuck it is going to take for these guys to get together, for fuck's sake.
It's a Sad Sad Situation
Tumblr media
Back at the coffin house, Song Lan is dejectedly caressing Xiao Xingchen's coffin.
Tumblr media
This scene is poignant but it's also a reminder of what nice hands everybody in this show has.
Tumblr media
It's also an opportunity to appreciate the details of Song Lan's costume. All the costumes have such variety in the fabrics, even an all black or black/grey outfit like this has a lot of textural variation.
Tumblr media
Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian each have something important to return to Song Lan. Wei Wuxian gives him the spirit trapping bag that contains what's left of Xiao Xingchen's consciousness.
Tumblr media
Xiao Zhan and Li Bowen each make a valiant attempt to pretend this bag is not empty and about to collapse if they hold it too firmly.
Tumblr media
Lan Wangi watches him receiving it, with a deep and painful understanding of Song Lan's feelings in this moment.
Tumblr media
So, I assume that Lan Wangji is probably mainly feeling grateful that he has all of Wei Wuxian (well, minus his old body, which doesn't really matter to LWJ) returned to him. But I also can't help thinking about what the Lan Wangji of ~10 years ago would have given to have a scrap of Wei Wuxian's soul that he could carry with him. I wonder if Lan Wangji is thinking about that too.
Song Lan tells them, by writing in the dirt with his sword, that he plans to travel the world to fight evil in company with what's left of Xiao Xingchen. Essentially returning to the life journey that they shared, all those years ago. Lan Wangji responds by presenting Xiao Xingchen's sword to him.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Song Lan hits the road with both swords on his back, while Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji watch him go.
Tumblr media
We don't hear Lan Wangji's thoughts, but his expression is, I think, a reflection of the grief he carried for so many years.
Tumblr media
We do hear Wei Wuxian's thoughts, wondering if Song Lan and Xiao Xichen will ever meet again.
Tumblr media
I'm not sure how reincarnation works when one of you has part of his soul trapped in a bag and one of you is a possibly-immortal walking corpse, but maybe they'll manage to be reborn together in spite of all that.
When WWX and LWJ are done contemplating how shitty the world can be, they reboot by having an intense gaze at each other.
Tumblr media
Then it's back to mystery solving.
Tumblr media
Wei Wuxian smacks the lid off of Xiao Xingchen's coffin....which is now empty?
Tumblr media
Maybe they buried him between this scene and the last one. Without using his coffin. *shrug*
Tumblr media
Lan Wangji lets the sword spirit out of the bag, and watches it sink through the open coffin and down underneath it. He shoves the coffin out of the way and finds another underneath it. Bunk coffins!
Tumblr media
This one is covered with magic shit, which Wei Wuxian uncovers so we can see the heap of talismans on top of it.
Tumblr media
Hand enthusiasts, this really is the episode for you.
Lan Wangji, who never does anything halfway, splits the lid in half with Bichen rather than, like, opening the lid in some normal way.
Tumblr media
The sword spirit turns into Baxia, which is a big clue that the headless corpse in the coffin is Nie Mingjue.
Tumblr media
Note that in traditional Chinese death...stuff, it's important to have a complete corpse, so separating a corpse into parts and keeping its head in your linen closet is a big fuckyou to the dead person in question.
Side note: Wei Wuxian continues to sense resentful energy directly, in his new body; once you open the doors of perception there is no going back, I guess.
Tumblr media
Lan Wangji still seems to depend on his eyeballs and the presence of black smoke to tell him what's up, despite probably being pretty familiar with the feel of it, by now.
Additional side note since I can fit one more image into this post before Tumblr stops me: Lan Wangji continues to be impossibly pretty.
Tumblr media
Continued in part 3!
Soundtrack: Sorry Seems to be the Hardest Word by Elton John

Please don't make any sudden moves (you don't know the half of the abuse)
Or the AU in which WWX isn't as touchy as in canon
Warnings: implications of mental and physical abuse
Hopefully posting it properly this time because Tumblr got me fucked up the first time
But Lan Wangji has been spending enough time with Wei Ying, around him, to see the momentary flinch he's trying so hard to suppress, the flash of panic in his eyes every time someone else tries to initiate any kind of physical contact with him.
Wei Ying flinches.
Lan Wangji has keen eyes, and he notices things that others may not. And it's his keen eyes that see it - because otherwise, it's nearly impossible to pick up on if you don't know where to look.
Wei Ying flinches like somebody for whom touch has only been painful.
Lan Wangji knows, because he has seen it before.
Some of his cousins, react like that too, after they've been disciplined one too many times.
Even brother reacts like that sometimes. He's never told Wangji why, but it's not hard to guess. Especially as some of the elders do recount the unruly days of the First Jade out loud over tea every now and then, and applaud themselves for having disciplined him.
Lan Wangji knows what that means. He's been good - outstandingly, exceptionally good all his life so he could avoid it.
But Wei Ying isn't a Lan. The Jiang sect isn't like them. Jiang Wanyin doesn't flinch.
Why does Wei Ying?
They're in the library again.
Wei Ying is writing down the rules - or whatever it is that he's doing - and Lan Wangji finds himself studying the other carefully. There are no visible signs on his body, no marks or brands or anything. Even when they shared the cold springs, Lan Wangji didn't see anything out of place.
(Not that he looked that carefully over Wei Ying's naked glistening skin... but! Bruises and scars attract attention... but there were none.)
Wei Ying acts like his usual, unbothered self, humming as he writes, not a shadow of anything negative on his face.
It doesn't make sense.
He hands Lan Wangji some silly drawing an hour later, and when, irritated with the incessant noise of Wei Ying asking him all sorts of things, he angrily reaches over the table, towards Wei Ying, to throw the paper away - he sees it again.
The barely suppressed flinch, the wide eyes, the fear.
It makes Lan Wangji's stomach churn.
"Wei Ying..."
He doesn't reply, not knowing whether to open his mouth or keep quiet, eyes darting quickly between the paper and Lan Wangji.
He speaks as if he's weighing the words a hundred times before they come out, and he's watching Lan Wangji's reactions with a very poorly concealed panic.
“S-sorry...um... I didn’t think you’d actually get so angry with me... I was just trying to tease you a bit like I always do... I’ll just... go over there and finish my work now...”
Lan Wangji is left with even more questions now - and with the terrible realization that Wei Ying is... Wei Ying is scared of him.
Scared of him too.
"I wasn't- actually angry." He finally finds it in himself to speak a few agonizing minutes later. "Don't - you have no reason to be afraid of me." An attempt at a comforting smile. "I'll never hurt you."
Wei Ying stares at him, his eyes stormy and unreadable, before they slowly fill with tears that Wei Ying can't blink away.
"Sorry, I- I don't know why I..." he's quick to wipe the little droplets off his cheeks, despite the many that follow. "I... nobody ever noticed..."
"I am here, Wei Ying. If you wish to talk-"
Lan Wangji finds himself pulled into a hug over the little writing table, feels Wei Ying's tears fall against the side of his neck.
"I know you hate touching but... can we stay like this for a little while?"
"It is not comfortable."
And so, Lan Wangji easily pulls Wei Ying into his lap and refuses to think anything traitorous of the position they're in now.
Wei Ying burrows in his chest, wonders if he's dreaming or if something is possessing Lan Wangji right now - but decides to bask into it nevertheless.
"I've never been afraid of you, Lan Zhan. I'll never be."
---
There is war, bloodshed, Wei Ying disappears for three months and returns more dead than alive.
This time, he doesn't allow Lan Wangji to comfort him.
Wei Ying flinches again.

WujiWatch: CQL Rewatch Episode 1
I've said before (I can't find the post but just trust me) that people trying to get their friends into CQL/The Untamed should start said friends on Episode 3, not Episode 1, because Episode 1 is basically impossible to understand unless you are already familiar with the plot (and this is especially true for viewers unfamiliar with the xianxia genre).
But having just rewatched Episode 1 for at least the 6th time, I have to add: you also shouldn't start your friends on Episode 1 because it is objectively the worst episode of the whole show.
Hear me out.
The first episode contains:
The worst visual effects of the whole show (that sequence with the hands reaching for the Yin Tiger Seal, dear God!)
The second-worst practical special effects of the whole show (nothing will ever beat the animatronic dog, but the weird veiny hand and the hilariously unconvincing fake blood dripping down LWJ's arm are up there)
The worst writing of the whole show - I know it's because they have to get through a lot of exposition (although still not enough!) but a first-time viewer only knows what's in front of them
The worst acting of the whole show - the guy playing Mo Ziyuan is so bad
The worst coloring of the whole show, especially in the first scene, where each shot looks like it's from a totally different show than the previous shot
The worst makeup of a show where the makeup is usually quite good (WWX's pancake death mask as he dangles from the cliff, yikes)
One (1) female character, who is a one-dimensional villain
Episode 1 also contains very little or none of the best things about The Untamed: Wangxian interaction, great costumes, breathtaking vistas, gorgeous sets, Wen Qing... and so on. There is great stuff in Episode 1, it's not a total wasteland, but it's very, very far from CQL at its best.
So I am begging you, BEGGING YOU, please start your friends on Episode 3. It's so much easier to understand, it's so much better... and you won't have to work so damn hard to overcome the terrible first impression that Episode 1 inevitably leaves--particularly the first scene, which every single friend I've tried to hook on this show has laughed at, when it is very much not supposed to be funny. It's so fucking hard to come back from that.

Wangxian Top Ten Fic Recs
So. I got into MDZS/The Untamed back in February, & I've sort of fallen into a Wangxian black hole from which I am not sure I will ever emerge. Thusly, I've been reading a ton of Wangxian fanfiction lately & have acquired quite a few favorites. Naturally I had to eventually compile a rec list lest I combust with all the barely suppressed love I have for this ship.
Now you lucky people get to reap the benefits of all my hard work because not only have I ranked my top ten, I am also including a bunch of honorable mentions because I'm ridiculous & have no self restraint because I'm such a kind & generous person. Note that the honorable mentions are not ranked & are listed in no particular order.
Fair warning, all of these recs are rated Explicit because I enjoy either a sprinkling or a flood of adult content with my fics. It's far from the focus of many of them, but it's there to varying degrees in each. Also, some of these fics cover some heavy content that may be triggering for some folks, so please do mind the tags & any authors' notes for your own peace of mind.
And with no further adieu, onto the recs!
1. Scars Where They Used to Be by CwythanWind (E, 58,467)
Thoughts: I lost count of how many times I cried in this fic. It was gorgeous in every sense of the word. The characterizations were phenomenal. Wei Ying’s pain was palpable, & the pining was agonizing. Lan Zhan conveying his love through poetry made me sob like a baby twice. The prose was just that beautiful. I can’t recommend this enough. As soon as I finished it I knew it was going to become my favorite Wangxian fic, & nothing has managed to top it yet.
2. Beneath Your Skin by Wrenwolf (E, 147,201)
Thoughts: I was sold on tattoo artist Wei Ying from the word go, haha, but Lan Zhan as an antiques dealer was also surprisingly on point. I go on about characterization a lot in these recs, but I have to tell you that Lan Zhan's here is one of my absolute favorites. I felt like I'd crawled into his skin & was just living there right along with him. And don't get me started on Wei Ying in this fic. I just.. fuck, I cried so much, y'all, & it was incredibly cathartic. Nie Huaisang was my favorite side character in this, & they were an absolute BAMF! You can't go wrong with this one. It's just stunning.
3. Pentimento. by orange_crushed (E, 72,966)
Thoughts: This fic was full of sentiment: regrets, longing, & so, so nostalgic. The love of art was apparent & beautifully on display here, & it added a richness to the whole thing. I cried several times during this from the empathy I had for both Lan Zhan's & Wei Ying's experiences (can you sense a theme with my favorites making me overly emotional? lol). The tone got heavy in places, but it didn't feel graphic or overwhelming at any point for me. The writing was just fantastic, & I've enjoyed a few more of the author's fics since I read this one.
4. i'm gonna drown when you wake up by teenjiism (E, 51,752)
Thoughts: I related to this fic on several levels because both characters are portrayed as neurodivergent in ways that felt very authentic, & I rarely see it done as well as it was here. I have ADHD, & Wei Ying's headspace felt extremely familiar, ha. Lan Zhan & Wei Ying's friendship was so lovely here, too. I adored their easy intimacy & how they were each other's favorite person before Wei Ying even realized he was in love with Lan Zhan. Oh yes, this is another fantastic oblivious Wei Ying/One Brain Cell WWX Strikes Again fic. The pining was perfect, & the overall sweetness of their relationship made this a very floaty/happy reading experience for me, personally.
5. Nothing But Trouble by brooklinegirl (E, 60,318)
Thoughts: Continuing with the theme of One Brain Cell WWX Strikes Again, this was a hilarious & heady fake dating scenario fic. His cluelessness reached new heights in this one, & I about died when he came up with the idea that naturally he & Lan Zhan should practice things like kissing for authenticity's sake. (Oh Wei Ying, you sweet summer child... he kills me; can you tell?) I loved how matter-of-fact Lan Zhan was about the whole thing, too. I laughed a lot during this fic. I even blushed a couple of times, too! Highly enjoyable & a must-read for me.
6. you've ruined my life (by not being mine) by cicer (E, 132,713)
Thoughts: None of the parents in this fic are doing a good job, but hey, they didn't in canon either, in my not-so-humble opinion. It's not what I focused on in the fic, but the tags certainly amused me. I haven't come across many texting fics in MDZS, so this was a pleasant & welcome surprise. The whole fic wasn't done through texting, but their text exchanges were SO CUTE. Lan Zhan texted exactly how I thought he would in this, & it made me laugh every time. The pining was lovely, & when they finally got to see each other in person again in New York I was glued to my computer until I finished the fic. I adored the tone of this one. It was great & just a really fun read.
7. and so my heart beats wildly by lily_winterwood (E, 106,435)
Thoughts: This was one of the most original modern AUs I've seen & featured competitive cultivation that had a Hunger Games meets professional figure-skating competition vibe. It was wild, but it made sense when I read it, I promise. The author was very good at fleshing out their world, & I was fascinated by the concept. Wei Ying once again failed to notice Lan Zhan was in love with him, & his confusion over their interactions never failed to entertain me. I never get tired of their dynamic, y'all, & it was just perfect here. I highly recommend this one.
8. Falling to the Rhythm by Selenay (E, 128,916)
Thoughts: Ever seen So You Think You Can Dance or Strictly Come Dancing? This was basically that but Wangxian! Wei Ying was stunning as a professional dancer being handed a socially awkward, concert violinist Lan Zhan & having to teach him to dance in front of the nation for 12 weeks, & I absolutely loved Lhan Zhan in this. He was precious. The sexual tension during some of the dances was electrifying, & watching them fall in love over the course of the filming of the show was a delight to read.
9. Two Dollar Coffee by marizousbooty (E, 145,286)
Thoughts: I almost fell out of my chair laughing because how do you acquire an accidental sugar daddy?! Well, if you read this fic, you'll find out. One Brain Cell WWX Strikes Again! Yeah, it's one of my favorite AO3 tags, so sue me, lol. The sex was obviously one of the highlights, which I am known to enjoy in a fic (don't judge me, Puritans), but it certainly wasn't the only thing that was well written here. I loved everything about this from beginning to end.
10. things that make it warm by yabakuboi (E, 33,327)
Thoughts: This fic hurt my feelings, not gonna lie. I cried ugly tears at the break up, but I've always had a hard time with reconciliation fics. It was very worth it, however. The way the fic covered their relationship growing & changing over time was very compelling, & a highlight of this for me was Wei Ying's relationship with the Wens, particularly A'Yuan. It was very sweet amongst an ocean of angst, haha. I read this in the span of a couple hours. Just couldn't be torn away. If you're a sucker for angst with a happy ending, then you might want to check this one out.
Honorable Mentions
The Simplest Way Forward by harriet_vane (E, 70,972)
Thoughts: This was so heartwarming I couldn't stop smiling over how adorable it was. Kid fics aren't typically a favorite of mine, but I do enjoy a really good one every now & then. This was one of the best I've read, to be honest. A'Yuan was the sweetest little angel, & he was so cute with Wei Ying spazzing out about every aspect of his care. Lan Zhan being the quiet, responsible source of reason & support was expected but of course always a welcome addition to the mix. Accidental Baby Acquisition isn't a tag I'd seen before, but it's a new favorite when it comes to Wangxian getting to be surprise parents together, haha.
undone (the spreadsheet song) series by spookykingdomstarlight (E, 282,452)
Thoughts: This is a two part series that tells the same story from each love interest’s point of view, a la Rivals by Reiya in the YoI fandom, which is one of my favorites of all time. Similarly, this story is also phenomenally written. I was sucked in immediately & read both fics over the span of like 3 days. I actually read Lan Zhan’s POV fic (the second in the series) in a single day. I was spellbound by the whole thing, couldn’t get enough. I highly recommend this. The characterizations are incredible, & the emotions are so intense I couldn’t help but feel everything right along with each of them as the story progressed.
My only word of caution is that if you have a hard time reading about Wangxian being intimate with people other than each other you might want to skim/skip those sections of the second fic like I had to. The author makes it fairly easy by giving a heads up in the author’s notes at the beginning of each chapter in which that occurs, which I very much appreciated.
Many happy returns. by orange_crushed (E, 25,470)
Thoughts: This fic started with a very serendipitous first meeting between businessman Lan Zhan & Wei Ying, who he mistook for the (non-sexual) escort he'd hired for the evening. I nearly died of mortification right along with poor Lan Zhan when he figured out his mistake. Him confessing this to Wei Ying was painfully awkward & hurt my heart, but fear not! We all know I can't handle a fic without an eventual happy ending, haha. Watching their instant connection develop into something more was such a treat. I loved this fic quite a lot for it being a quicker read for me.
Multiphonics by androkastia (E, 63,705)
Thoughts: Wei Ying was such a lovable disaster in this (as he often is, bless him). Him & Lan Zhan both being in the orchestra was a fun idea, & I loved the author's choice of the harp for Lan Zhan's instrument. I thought it was very different from the usual violin or cello choice I've seen previously but still suited him perfectly. I also loved his overall characterization, down to his fashion sense being tastefully eclectic when his style is usually portrayed as very stuffy & conservative. I really enjoyed this college/university AU, & I've read quite a few of them at this point. So obviously this one stood out.
No Compasses, No Signs by brooklinegirl (E, 36,041)
Thoughts: Ah, finally! A soulmate fic. A Temnurus rec list really wouldn't be complete without at least one. This was a modern AU, which made it especially fun when their soul bond inexplicably manifested as they literally collided with each other on the sidewalk. It was painful watching them fumble for answers to why they suddenly knew things about each other they had no way of knowing only moments before, but the sweet conclusion made it more than worth the temporary angst.
A Haunting Love by Selenay (E, 64,621)
Thoughts: This was another very unique modern with magic AU, & I was nervous because Wei Ying was a ghost haunting Lan Zhan's new house in the quiet little town he moved to in order to write his next novel. Naturally Lan Zhan became ensnared by the mystery surrounding Wei Ying's departure. This had a very romantic feel to it, intensely poetic in a way that I found very alluring. There were even thriller-esque moments towards the end of the story, so it had a bit of everything, all of it equally satisfying to read.
love, in fire and blood by cicer (E, 360,042)
Thoughts: This was an example of a cool MDZS-specific trope I hadn't seen before, & in it Wei Ying, the infamous Yiling Patriarch, was a cultivator who had achieved immortality (aka, he's OP as fuck but in a fun way). The great sects enlisted his help to win the Sunshot Campaign, & what did he demand in return? Lan Zhan's hand in marriage, of course! It was a fantastic slow burn in which poor Lan Zhan suffered the mortifying ordeal of falling in love with his own husband. An amazing & complex plot, chock-full of angsty goodness.
a place to hide (can't find one near) by yiqie (E, 76,091)
Thoughts: I'm giving y'all a heads up first thing that this fic pulled no punches when it came to the heavier subject matter covered in the tags & author's note. Some of the descriptions were fairly graphic, so please take care of yourselves when considering this one. That said, it was a powerful portrayal of someone suffering from mental health issues & the long & often complicated journey of healing. This one also happened to contain a love story so beautiful that I was brought to tears several times by Lan Zhan's patient & loving care for his most important person, nevermind all the times I cried at the sad parts! I found the emotional cost of those very much worth the payoff of their happy ending, which is why I just had to include this one.
Just You, Just Me (Just Us, Just We) by wincechesters (E, 19,777)
Thoughts: Lan Zhan thought his brother made him an appointment at an acupuncturist & was aghast when he discovered it was for a session with a professional cuddler instead! Enter Wei Ying, gratuitous cuddle therapy, & his usual chaotic charm. Poor Lan Zhan being so overwhelmed while also becoming hopelessly besotted made me laugh, bless his fragile little heart. This was an adorable & light-hearted fic that made me want to go back & reread it almost immediately, haha.
my age has never made me wise by idrilka (E, 63,439)
Thoughts: I absolutely loved this. It was pretty CQL (The Untamed) compliant & told the post-canon story of Wei Ying wandering alone as a rogue cultivator after the events of the show. Of course he was pining after his zhiji the entire time, so when he heard gossip that the Chief Cultivator might be married by summer's end it nearly undid him. The angst was excruciating, but at the same time, One Brain Cell WWX Strikes Again fics somehow always manage to be fun at the same time. I've read several post-canon, wandering Wei Ying stories, & this one was particularly good.

I think many jc antis and some jc fans don’t realize that Jiang Cheng is not just an angry callous man. He’s arguably the most sensitive character in mdzs.
He deserves to be seen through his hard exterior, because there’s something so interesting behind it. An angry man with no deeper thought would not keep Chenqing by his side for 13 years. No man with such little depth would cry and mourn at the golden core reveal and at the temple scene. His love and willingness to die for his nephew shows one of his best qualities: loyalty to family and his loved ones.
Him trying to help raise Jin Ling and treat him better than Jiang Cheng’s parents ever treated him is honorable. To be better than the parents who hit, humiliated, and neglected you- it’s a genuinely respectable thing. That takes character growth and reflection to be a better person, which can be hard especially in a case like Jc.
Jiang Cheng rebuilt lotus pier all by himself, yes he got support from the top clans, however he oversaw that everything was reconstructed and that the place could be a bright and functioning sect, even better before his fathers rule. By himself. That takes a certain level of devotion that I admire as well, and he doesn’t do it for greedy reasons like power like JGY, he does it because he’s been groomed to be the sect leader for so long, it’s basically a part of his personality now. And that in itself can be seen as another tragedy.
Btw the man was literally begging wwx to come back with him to lotus pier and to get rid of the wens, so that he could protect him, before things truly got out of hand “if you insist on protecting them I can’t protect you” That’s fear, that’s fear of another loss, the death of someone you care about. Also can we talk about how jc always knew he was second best to wwx? And hey he never was that angry with the man, never tried to push him down and make fun of him for being the son of a servant, he trusted and respected him. And I don’t think that was easy to do.
Also another thing. Jc never tried to hunt and kill or torture wwx. When he ran into him on the streets of that inn, he whipped wwx to stun him, and dragged him back to question him. Not even touching a hair on his head. He used fairy as a blocker, and did call him over to fuck with wwx, it wasn’t right but I get why he got pissed off. Wwx had made a…insensitive comment to say the least, because he was so used to messing with jc (and jc in turn) but forgot that things are very different now.
Also, jc never actually wanted to kill wwx when he saw him again, he whipped him to expel him out of mo xuanyu’s body because he thought he was possessing him and he did lash out at lotus pier but he tried to stop before it got any worse “Jiang Cheng didn’t really want to hit Lan WangJi, and immediately retracted his whip, but it was already too late.”
My point in writing all of this is that jc is not just an “angry bitter man”, he is man capable of warmth and forgiveness like how we see him forgive wwx in the temple after years of resenting him. It’s so easy for jc to just hate wwx, but he doesn’t, he says it himself “Why can’t I hate you?! Shouldn’t I hate you?!” The anger and hurt he’s fed for years are slowly losing its roots in his heart and he doesn’t know what to do except cry. This part of him, I think is too relatable. When you survive through expressing hurt as anger, when you have to deal with “you’ll never be good enough” I can understand and I wish others would acknowledge this type of canon

Ooh what about lwjwwx2? These ideas you’ve shared so far are super intriguing and cool!
Thank you!!!! I'm glad you've enjoyed them.
lwjwwx2 is actually a continuation of Lan Zhan, Fantasyland, which is the first CQL fic I ever wrote and also the first I ever posted.
I saw CQL in 2020 and fell in love with it. Read tons of fanfic! I admit to feeling kind of intimidated about writing for a Chinese canon where I really didn't know a lot of the cultural context, also knowing that some non-Chinese fans had been pretty shitty about respecting said culture.
Another barrier to writing fic for the series was I still, in some ways, struggle to imagine WWX having sexual feelings--or even romantic ones, really! Like, I could definitely write an aro ace WWX and that might be interesting, but I wanted wangxian to hook up with kisses and with boning. But like in my head I was just like...WWX is literally going to think of that? And LWJ is never going to tell him?
This is how I ended up writing Lan Zhan, Fantasyland. I couldn't even, in my own head, make WWX get sexy about anyone, so I wrote LWJ struggling, in his own head, to imagine WWX wanting him. Like, he's able to imagine WWX having sex in this careless, possibly-not-even-into-it way, but WWX having sex with him, much less wanting him that way? He cannot compute.
It was going to be a whole series; lwjwwx2 is LWJ imagining that WWX is hit with a sex curse where he has to fuck or die, and LWJ is like "okay but surely this fantasy will allow me to finally imagine us at least being intimate." Hilariously I have written the 5,000 words or so up to the actual fucking and stopped, because I still could not imagine WWX+sex. So I never continued, although I still read it sometimes, because Lan Zhan, Fantasyland is about Lan Zhan being haunted by WWX in his imagination, and the 5000 more words of that I wrote are great, imo.
As a side note, beyond the above mentioned two barriers I will say the biggest barrier to writing fic for this series is I just like it too much. In particular, I like WWX too much. I just get overwhelmed a lot when I think about CQL in general. There's something about it that's just too much of what I want of everything. The only other ship I feel that way about is Kirk/Spock; it's hard to write because it's so much of what I want that I just kind of stare off into space whenever I think about it.

Reading what you just posted and it’s terrible but all I can think is just
Lan Zhan: I loved you! I still love you!
Wei Ying: The fuck you did and the fuck you do
And like if you make this fic I will read it like a feral gremlin but I also think I will actually sob and it will completely and utterly destroy me while reading it
YEAH THAT’S PRETTY ACCURATE as far as reactions go.
LWJ has lived like his 2 years of mourning, playing the guilt game, and fought one war against the Wen and then got hints that the terrible absolutely shady demonic cultivator killed his One True Love. And now WWX is not in fact dead but also the guy he’s been trying very hard to kill for months.
Meanwhile Wei Wuxian was living his life okay. He was raising his kid, doing some productive things for the war effort and finally had room to breathe and people were listening to him (perhaps calling him ridiculous and making fun of him, but Wen Qing and her brother were listening to what he was saying anyway)
And then fucking LWJ decided apparently that he needed revenge for the murder WWX faked????
Like, I’m not even terribly a fan of miscommunication trope wise and I definitely don’t want this to end in “LWJ needs to grovel uwu”, but just this fic idea isn’t leaving me.
And aaah it’s honestly great to hear you like this idea, as I said before, this is the type of self indulgent fic I don’t allow myself to write, so hearing someone actually would look forward to it is a great help ❤️

YilingWei Sect AU: Head Disciple
Tumblr media
Click here for previous YilingWei Sect posts.
___
Meet Mo Xuanyu, YilingWei’s beloved and trusty Head disciple.
Him and his mother, Mo Fan, left the family village at a young age, with only the clothes on their back and a pouch of coins. Originally, they planned to travel north from Gusu, where Lanling stood, but an unfortunate encounter with bandits lead them to run into the forests, injured and bloodied.
Wei Wuxian founds them at the border of Jiangling, starved and close to death, and decided to bring them to Yiling, where he helped them build a home and start a new life. Mo Fan thrived with her surroundings, people appreciated and supported her. She taught the children of Yiling to write and read, and later would be a teacher in the BM when the sect is still fresh and new.
While Mo Xuanyu, who showed skill in leadership and the ability to teach just like his mother, was appointed to be the first ever Head Disciple of the YilingWei. (He’s not the first ever disciple, tho.)
He wielded a fan as if it were a dagger, moved liked the wind with a deadly sword, and was adept in all studies of talisman and arrays. Wei Wuxian couldn’t be more proud.
Mo Xuanyu specializes is talisman and rituals, and is the first one to master “Espy”
When Xue Yang comes along, they oddly get along very well. If Mo Xuanyu has WWX’s looks, then Xue Yang has his insanity. Mxy has learned the arts of keeping him in a tight leash.
He’s very good with children, that’s one of the reasons why he’s HD, but also he’s often had the responsibility of entertaining a-Yuan when he was a child, along with other youngs kids WWX picked up from the streets. They all call him “Yu-gege.” A-Yuan though, calls him “Pretty-gege.” And Mxy denied crying the first time.
Idk what signature color to give him! Frankly speaking, the disciples all wear black, gray, and red, the only difference in color are their swords. I always saw Mxy as the red and black guy, just the same as WWX! So it was hard to think of anything else.
I thought of gold because technically he was a Jin, but then his sword would look like Suibian. Then I just started fucking around to find out and thought orange looked pretty actually.
___
Bonus!
The acupuncture needle was crafted by Wen Qing as a preventive measure in case someone was attacked by resentful energy. The needle was made specifically to purge energy out of the body, when inserted into the right junctions and meridans, it can force the resentment out of the body and into the needle itself. (And can be purged in the same needle as well.)
It’s made with black quartz, which in this au, is a great medium for yin energy.
Also, the white markings on the inside of the bow (the circles) are indicators of symbol.
4 marks for the sect leader, 3 marks for the chiefs, and 2 marks for the senior disciples. Though really, it’s not that important, just an aesthetic choice.
Wwx has his in his belt but never wears it, he doesn’t like the idea of being identified by your status. He sees everyone equally and as family and doesn’t see the need to flaunt it.
It makes him feel a bit detached from the others, and he doesn’t like that feeling.
___
Hehe, thanks for reading! I think I’ll continue with these YilingWei Sect ideas. I wanna know if you guys want to know more about this AU!

let me sing to you

T, 61k, wangxian
Summary: A close call drives Wei Wuxian to protect the people he loves at any cost. But the real battle is within himself, and retreat is impossible. There may be casualties. Or: Dealing with ordinary threats of the more average variety causes Wei Wuxian to struggle with the resentful energy that lingers in him. Lan Wangji wants to help. Decidedly less-ordinary threats follow.
Mojo's comments: Okay, this story is going to kick you in the feels. But first, Author spends time treating you to teacher wwx and an adorable crop of Lan babies (lwj, lsz and ljy help to ride herd on them) out in the big Gusu world learning about people and… stuff. It's so fucking cute. And then. And then, now that Author has you where they want you. Bam! Something happens. A situation that doesn't seem as momentous as it should extends looong fingers of repercussions. POV is lwj, which author uses to craft the reader's second-hand feelings of confusion, helplessness and desperation as wwx mysteriously declines, has resentful episodes, and just. Starts to act in disturbingly uncontrolled Yiling Patriarch ways. The writing is vividly descriptive, and while I wouldn't categorize it as 'whump' - because wwx's hurt is all either emotional/mental or self-inflicted - there is a LOT of hurt, comfort, trust and self-worth issues and lwj having feels about it.
post-canon, canon compliant, hurt/comfort, fluff and angst, adorable juniors, hurt wei wuxian, pov lan wangji, resentful energy, trauma, guilt, bamf wei wuxian, mental instability, case fic, angst with a happy ending, yunmeng brothers reconciliation, the untamed canon, nightmares, sharing a bed, ptsd, established relationship, caretaking, @theuntamedruinedmylife

For the fanfic asks - number 8 and 24!
8. Is there a story idea in your mental vault that you’ve never been brave enough to try writing? Is this the year? Can you tell us about it?
oh my god YES and it's actually the same answer it's been for the last couple years, even though the target has changed. I really, really, really want to write a darkfic. Not just a fic with dark themes, or gore, or horror, but a properly fucked up fic you need to take a break from reading. Something disturbing and uncomfortable.
My problem is I have a cop in my brain. When writing for MDZS I tried so hard to make WWX truly fucked up-- enough to match canon, where, you know, he commits actual atrocities?? Not the cute ones either. The gross ones. But I never managed it, I always ended up bending the narrative to excuse what he was doing. I couldn't commit the way MXTX did, and my anachronistic morality always bled through. While I do like my writing and I've largely accepted that this is a limitation I may never be able to push past, I can't help but be aware that my version of WWX is always gonna be flatter and less dimensional than MXTX's atrocities-committing original. It's fine; I can't exactly be mad at myself for not being able to out-write the actual MXTX, and I think I have enough other strengths to make up for this particular weakness.
I'm hoping it will be a little more doable to write a truly reprehensible Luo Binghe, given the particularities of the PIDW/SVSSS landscape. The LBH in the story I'm currently editing/posting sucks A Very Little Bit as part of a domestication arc, so that's baby step one. However, I've begun outlining a story in which Luo Binghe is truly despicable with no narrative justifications for his shitty behavior-- no misunderstandings, no "oh but he meant well" "oh it was just circumstances beating him down" "well necromancy and mind control and non-consensual surgical procedures are fine if you're using them to help people..."
My goal is to write a LBH who sucks so bad that you genuinely crave his downfall and want to see him cosmically punished. Then I want to save him anyway.
24. By the end of this year, you want your fandom to think of you as “that author who _______.”
Ooh I wanna be that author who can't even write fluff without sticking knives in. That would be a great reputation to have.
(Although tbh having any reputation would be a big deal, given the size of the fandoms I write for.)

(Re: Mean To Jiang Cheng) God yeah you're right. Man who has never once experienced uncomplicated happiness. He harms me. Genuinely I'm out there on the fanfiction website like oh man it's Runespoor. Their writing fucks so hard. It's so fucking good I know it'll be so fucking good. Am I Prepared To Cry Right Now. WWX should get everything he wants is indeed one of the biggest culprits in Mean To Jiang Cheng agenda, which is wild, because Jiang Cheng... ALSO wants WWX to have what he wants, including when it's him. And yet. Thank you for sharing so many incredible words. Every time they stab me in the chest.
Especially when it's him. If WWX wants him - if JC could be assured that WWX does want him, in whatever capacity - if WWX wants to be with him, in JC's company/sect/life, it would mean so much to JC.
WWX doesn't know how to want JC without hurting.
both of them are luxuries few can stand and it shows
thank you for your kind words, I'm so glad my stories touch you! :D

Of course, this ficlet is MATURE. if the mature tag wasn't a warning enough for you.
Disclaimers 1) COI / DEMON WWX is not canonically trans and this is not a/b/o, but you are free to imagine it how you please when reading if it enhances the enjoyment for you. Canonically, as he's a demon, he can simply shift his body as he pleases, and here he wanted to use a slit, so he did. as simple as that! He changes it up sometimes.
2) He's a demon so expect things like scratching, rough handling, foul language, etc. Demons express affection through unique ways in my universe, but biting and scratching is one of them!
There are no spoilers included here, so have fun reading!
quick phrase explanation: "The winds" refers to something similar to a heat, it's a curse brought on by the second ring of hell which is known to have turbulent winds of lust. The winds can be brought on accidentally via overstimulation, like milking/edging and it's a somewhat painful experience without a partner despite it being one of the more lenient curses. I made these curses up myself, so please do not use them for any of your writing!

Clash of Immortals
A Century of Waiting (snippet) Word Count - 687
Wei Wuxian growled and flipped their bodies, pinning down the others arms like something had snapped. “Lan Zhan..” his voice dropped, eyes flashing with iridescent blue fractals. His breath shuddered, as if withholding some sort of force, and without the ability to control the aggression in his body, he bared his teeth and snarled.
Lan Zhan was still a bit shocked from the reaction, but with no complaints he leaned in to nip again at the other’s jaw. He thrust his hips up, driving his length back into the wet mess between the others legs and stirred up fresh growls and whimpers.
“Don’t say I didn’t warn you!” Wei Wuxian’s face twisted in pleasure, gasps and hard breaths escaping him from the overstimulation. “F-Fuck Lan Zhan…!” He slammed down his hips in time, gasping as the man wriggled free in order to grasp his ass, fingers gripping and parting the flesh so he could aim deeper for the demon.
Wei Wuxian saw stars, his second climax causing his body to tremble and convulse. “O-Oh fuck!”
The noises were so ungodly wet, but the angel couldn’t find it in himself to be ashamed of the mess, especially with how wrecked it made the demon. He growled and bit the others shoulder, hands tight on that soft flesh as he continued thrusting desperately until he had completely spent himself. It wasn’t until he had stopped moving, erection still throbbing and twitching inside of his partner, that he released the bite with heavy breaths.
Wei Wuxian collapsed onto the other, his slit twitching still long after the other had stopped moving. “I-if I catch the winds because of you, you’re taking responsibility, Lan Zhan.” He leaned into the other’s hand as it held his burning face, eyes still half-lidded in a euphoric haze.
“Happily.” Lan Zhan gave him soft and slow kisses, eliciting small keens from the still sensitive demon. “I want you, so much I’m sure you’ll be sick of me.”
Wei Wuxian warbled in low tones, the sound almost like a creature more than anything humanoid. “How could I be sick of you? I just might run you ragged though if you try to fuck me again, you know. I’m too sensitive, I really will catch the winds and you will regret your actions.” He said that, but moaned when he felt the others length throb inside him as if in response. “Lan Zhan…”
Well, it was too much to resist. He missed the man, He was extremely happy to have him in his arms and was more than too excited to be able to make love to the man of his dreams. “I would never regret pleasing Wei Ying...” He growled softly, wrapping an arm around the other’s lower back before pulling the other into a deep kiss.
Wei Wuxian trembled, colored smoke curling out of his lips and shimmering with its heat. “M-mnh…” keened once more, feeling the other’s length hardening inside him all over again. “Lan Zhan…w-wait…”
“I’m sorry, I can’t wait longer. A century of waiting was torture…” He flipped their bodies, dipping his head against their skin to mark it further, dotting the other’s supple skin with red and purple hues. “I’ll make sure to take responsibility!”
Wei Wuxian arched as the slippery length started to pull out, his little toe-beans splaying out due to his now over stimulated body sending searing heat to every stretch of skin it could find. “H-hahh—L-Lan Zhan…! I-I…A-ah!” He cried, his arms immediately rushing to wrap around the other so he could grasp onto something- anything- because the sounds that came out of him the moment his angel drove back into him over and over again with such force were the most unrestrained, debauched noises he never thought would escape him and he had to hold onto something.
His claws found purchase, marring that beautifully smooth surface with thin stripes of red. While Lan Zhan hissed from the scratches initially, it only spurred him on further, the impact of his hips against the other’s bottom surely to leave the skin there a pleasant, bright red.

For the fic ask game
✿ did anything major change when you started writing His Knight in Shining Armor to when you finished?
☉ what do you do when you get stuck writing?
✿ yes! it did! i originally started that fic to just be another silly porny nonsense fic based on a cool and interesting artwork i saw on twitter and it kind of grew legs (as they often do) and i ended up giving wwx a pretty fucked up backstory and didnt really think TOO hard about how that would impact anything. i was just messing around writing stuff for me, yknow? then i started getting comments about how bad it made ppl feel and how it had affected them so i panicked a little, changed a few things, and hoped that i wouldnt get flamed 🥺 its still very fucked up tho
i think it turned out ok but i dont feel as strongly positive about that fic as i do others that ive written rip
☉ at the moment i've just been being patient with myself and accepting that im in a low-productivity phase xD i usually try to give myself space to Not think about a fic, as that often means that when i come back to it, reread the last part, i might be hit with some inspiration. i dont LIKE to force anything, and i worry that it will show through if i use brute force
ask me stuff about my fics!

I would love to see you write some kind of mdzs fate fusion! With different aspects of an mdzs character's history influencing their servant form. Maybe something where the Juniors are the mages and Mo Xuanyu tries to summon the fearsome Yiling Patriarch but summons a more cheery WWX instead, while Lan Sizhui summons the legendary Hanguang-jun. And Jin Ling summons Jiang Cheng because jiujiu transcends time and space! (and OYZZ summons NHS bc it would be funny. No one expects this team up! :D)
dfajsd;flkjad :I am rotating them so hard in my mind!! I've had fate+mdzs ideas for years and never quite known how to put them together!!
I feel like working out the logistics of everyone getting summoned at this time of night is...questionable, but let's say that it's a modern day setting, and someone's set it up so all the cultivators in a certain area can summon a servant in order to start a free for all, winner gets the holy grail - because if anyone's starting a bloodbath for a suspicious cup full of seemingly unlimited power, it's mdzs cultivation society!Surely this won't cause any problems!
Especially since this is a setting where reincarnation is a thing. Servants aren't heroes themselves, after all, but copies of them, the distillation of their virtues and vices into the most intense version they can be. Servants have met their original selves before - surely meeting a reincarnation isn't out of the question?
Which is how sect heir Jin Ling, in his expensive sneakers and a fancy sweater, summons a man with ancient clothing and his uncle's face.
"I ask of you, are you my master?"
"....jiujiu?"
The man blinks, and in a second, he's out of the circle and patting Jin Ling on the head, checking him - 'what are you wearing?"
"My clothes? Jiujiu???"
....he is going to have so much explaining to do to his parents. And his uncle. oh no.
ARCHER CLASS: JIANG CHENG
Across the city, in a quiet garden, two more summoning circles flare. Lan Jingyi and Lan Sizhui watch as figures form between them in black and white, matching figures -
"Wow, gege, are we a matched set?"
"Mn."
"Hey!! Hey look, it's our students! Boys, hi! Hey, is your uncle still Lan Qiren? Can we see him??"
Jingyi elbows Sizhui. "Are they supposed to know my dad's name?"
"I don't know," Sizhui whispers back. "But maybe they can help us figure out why he had a qi deviation..."
SABER CLASS: LAN WANGJI
CASTER CLASS: WEI WUXIAN
~
In a lonely restaurant after hours, the chef ran. He was cleaning up after work when he saw something he shouldn't have - blood, and a knife, and a figure moving impossibly fast -
"I'm really sorry, da ge. It seems I don't have a choice but to kill you again," says the impossibly fast man, his sword whipping out like a - well, a whip. (The chef had never had a good grasp on metaphorical language, after all.)
"I don't know what you're talking about!" and the chef grabs his favorite knife and spins, trying to take a chunk out of his enemy.
But the man in gold is too fast, and his blade nicks the chef's arm. Blood spatters.
A pattern painted whimsically on the restarant's wall glows under the fresh coat of blood. A figure emerged and smashed down, almost crushing the slender man in a flurry of green silk - and every clumsy move after was made with the deliberation of a wrestler, making space between the man in gold and the chef.
"San ge - "
"I'm not dealing with you, Huaisang!" the man snapped. "I'll be back!"
"Um," said the chef.
"Hi!" says the man in green - who gathers himself up with the wet eyes of a dog. "Da ge, so sorry about all that - are you alright?"
Nie Mingjue has had a fucking night when all he wanted was to close his restarant. However, he thinks as the man in ancient clothing drapes himself over him and wails about how relieved he is he's ok - there's something that seems right about this weird guy saying they're bound by fate or whatever. He always did want a little brother.
ASSASSIN : JIN GUANGYAO
AVENGER: NIE HUAISANG
~
"I'm Wei Wuxian, I prommy."
"You prommy?" Zizhen says.
"I prommy. I double prommy. I will take good care of you, triple prommy."
"That's a lot of prommies."
"I'm a modern guy who makes modern prommies. We'll win this whole thing, you can relax, we can have a good time. It'll be great!"
"Yeah!"
"Now, first things first - you got any good romance novels I can borrow? I have been starved for choice!"
PRETENDER: MO XUANYU
(kdafja;sdlkjs sorry jiang cheng but you are so hard to write ILL GET YOU NEXT TIME)
