wei ying: redstone genius. and a master at social engineering. he uses both for chaos. he played on anarchy servers in middle school, and therefore a menace for all his friends who play casually. hes the type to try to crystal pvp jiang cheng and "accidentally" blows up his 24 dogs. nowadays, as an adult, he makes redstone machine tutorials and lag machines on servers for trolling purposes. he makes amazing pixel art

lan zhan: doesnt play computer games much but only played because wei ying played it. wei ying tried to goad him into playing together on one of those large public servers when they were teens but he refused. however he secretly went home and asked his uncle to buy him a copy and he proceeded to only play in creative mode for the rest of his life. he is also a redstone genius. he mostly makes aesthetic builds rather than actually beat the game.

jiang cheng: plays the game and does every thing right, but at some point he starts getting bored and wonders what the point of all of it is. he tames as many wolves as he can and has them run around killing mobs with him. he plays in survival single player, never in a server. wei ying always makes him open his world to LAN so they can play together, and he knows, he KNOWS he shouldnt, but somehow he does and ends up regretting it. his house that he took 2 irl days to build is now on fire. he gives up

nie huaisang: forever noob who only played because his friend wei ying convinced him to. he doesnt understand how to play it no matter how many times its explained to him. keeps asking questions about what to do after he chopped the wood. how does he get a sword. why isnt this stone dropping an item after he breaks the block. etc. when he does eventually get the hang of the game, he makes pretty houses and structures thats actually pretty good for a beginner.

nie mingjue: god at PVP and a legend in PVP servers for his extremely OP gear but also kind enough to help beginners that join. in survival he brute forces his way through the game and punches the mobs with his bare fists on the first night, no gear no weapons, low health low hunger. when things settle he tames a cat and makes a nice home. he plays only a couple hours a week bc he has to hit the gym. its comedic watching a grown, muscular man play minecraft

meng yao: set up a public multiplayer server with lots of special plugins and functionality it really looks like a good, legit server. however, no one except lan huan really joins anyways, but he puts his best into the server. whenever he finds out about people that shit talks him or just simply disagrees with him he has xue yang join their servers and grief their world.

lan huan: mostly watched his little brother play on the computer when they were younger but lan zhan let him play if he asked. hes fascinated by all the things to possibly do in the game, and likes the cute little animals. he also really likes lan zhan's builds and tries to make cute little houses himself! he was curious one day and played on survival, and by the time night came around he was panicking when all the mobs came chasing after him. he never played again

lan sizhui: actually plays the game fairly seriously even when all his friends are going around causing chaos in a nearby village. is that one friend that can balance playtime without impacting his school or social life, only on for a few hours a day but uses it wisely. he likes to make automatic farms with the redstone wisdom his mentor wwx bestowed upon him, and even goes the extra mile to make it OSHA certified—he labels everything and organizes all his chests by demension and block type. once in a while, he lets loose when his friends are in a particularly goofy mood

lan jingyi: lets out all his frustrations of real life into skywars and hunger games. he’s really good at parkour too. his favorite thing to do is troll jin ling. his setup is a shitty laptop he uses for school where the frames never peak past 15 fps and the wifi automatically cuts off at 10 pm in his household. he uses every minute he can get.

jin ling: insane rig set up purchased with both father’s and jiujiu’s money and plays with resource-intensive BSL shader mods on java and RTX settings on bedrock. he still gets beat in bedwars by Jingyi on a chromebook. every world he joins he finds and tames a wolf as fast as he can and names it after his irl dog, Fairy. once his dog got blown up by a creeper and he was inconsolable for days

ouyang zizhen: doesnt play minecraft much but will play with his friends on big multiplater servers when asked. the quartet plays factions and they all named him the leader except he never really gets online anyways

xiao xingchen: likes to play on a small, private server he port forwarded just for him and song lan. they played on easy mode and built houses and farms together and beautiful structures. soon, their world was joined by A’Qing, and eventually xue yang, except they didnt know it was xue yang and one day found their world tragically griefed

song lan: only played when xiao xingchen asked him to play. he suspected the player that joined their world was xue yang but he could never actually prove it and xiao xingchen would always give the player the benefit of the doubt.

xue yang: notorious griefer, hacker, and feared troller. he finds private servers with no whitelist and logs in to grief their world as fast as he can. he uses every trolling technique in the book: lava casts, wither boss spawns, illegal items, etc. he looks up to wei ying, a LEGEND in the mc trolling community, in hopes he can get his attention, but wei ying does not approve of his actions at all—HE never trolled and griefed private servers where people put their heart and soul into creating, only the big ones where admins would scam people out of their money. everytime xue yang is banned from a world, he just hops on an alternate account.

A’Qing: loves to get OP gear and make massive builds. however, after joining xxc she gets a new goal: to seek revenge against xue yang for what he did to the server. at some point, she finds her way into meng yao’s server and griefs xue yang’s base with massive amounts of lava buckets. sadly, it was only a temporary success because the server was easily rolled back. she’ll find a way

I don’t think WWX would bully Binghe. Like, the man won’t hesitate to troll kids, but he wouldn’t bully them. The first time Binghe tries something with SJ, WWX takes him aside and is like “bro, don’t do that. It’s not appropriate and he doesn’t like it anyway. Now, let me introduce you to some people who would be more amenable to your affections.”

And by true, I mean Wei Wuxian would straight up punch Luo Binghe instead of going such a roundabout way of showing his displeasure. And then they can work it out directly from there.

Wei Wuxian would go around calling Luo Binghe not by his name but something like... "lost little lamb"/"sheep". If Wei Wuxian can call Jin Zixuan a "peacock", then he will do the same for Luo Binghe.

hot take: WWX can't read a room to save his life. Jingyi absolutely can read the room, he just doesn't give a shit.

jingyi speaks truth to power and gets away with it because everybody thinks he’s too oblivious to figure out when he should keep his mouth shut, but actually he just thinks it’s funny when everybody gets all indignant. (secondary theory: he never told anyone, but he LOVES handstands.) also, he has a reputation as a scaredy cat because of his ghost phobia, which leads people to assume that he’s a coward and couldn’t possibly be standing up to terrifying people on purpose, but what everyone forgets is that courage is not the absence of fear but rather the fortitude to face it. so by that metric, professional ghostbuster lan jingyi is actually...the bravest of them all??

i think wei wuxian probably can read a room very well (it would have been a survival instinct he developed from a childhood of neglect and abuse), but he worked very hard to get to the point where he could protect himself and now he takes great pleasure in flouting social conventions at every turn because what are they gonna do? kill him again?? lol okay enjoy being immediately sliced in half by his husband, the buffest dude in the galaxy, good luck surviving that, idiot

Do you know a reason as to the sudden rampant hate on LWJ these past few days?? I feel like I missed a new MDZS extra where we find out LWJ murders puppies and kittens in his free time.

I don’t know if it’s just me, but whenever I’m reading fanfic or looking at fanart, Lan Wangji showing up is like-the most exciting part of the story, lol-. I feel like (contrary to popular belief, apparently?) he makes things INTERESTING. WWX always finds what he says interesting, at least!

To be honest I think any recent spurt of LWJ-hate you might have seen on tumblr recently is from a ring of trolls. Best thing to do is ignore them.

And yes, LWJ showing up often is exciting! I mean, in the novel we always do get that sense because WWX absolutely adores him and finds him so interesting. When the MC, our most common viewpoint character, gets so into LWJ showing up and doing anything, it's easy to feel that excitement and happiness with him. Especially because LWJ is such an interesting character who's really full of depth!

Wei Wuxian looked. Sure enough, that child was very delicately handsome, obviously solidly on the path to becoming an attractive young man. On his smooth forehead was fastened a white rope, a substitute for the forehead ribbon.

Wei Wuxian asked, “Who is he?”

“Yiling Patriarch” pursed his lips disdainfully, then said, “Lan Wangji.”

How do u feel about jiang cheng?

I think he’s a super fun character and that it’s no wonder he’s a hot mess of a person. This man is 100% concentrated stress. *pats the top of JC’s head because he’s been through too much for a proper slap* You can fit so much humor, angst, character study, and relationship study in this guy! 

I think it’s totally fair if he’s not anyone’s cup of tea, but I get annoyed reading fic that’s totally “poor WWX, why is JC so mean to him” as though all the Jiang siblings aren’t deeply dysfunctional and WWX isn’t a dozen fatal flaws in a stylishly evil-looking set of robes. 

It’s like reading Cucumberplane fic scenes in which Shen Yuan relentlessly berates Shang Qinghua, leaving out the fact that Shang Qinghua in SY’s presence can be an incredibly annoying, smug internet troll, who also kind of dropped the ball on SY a few times. That’s not the Jiang bros’ situation at all, of course, but sometimes I’m reading WWX-centric fic like, “Hm. I want less woobie here and more annoying. It takes two to tango here. I want these characters to infuriate each other (and then rip each other’s wounds open and hug and start healing).”

He plans out what to say to the cashier when ordering coffee, he plans out his homework before even opening his textbook. He has a whole ten-year plan for how he’s going to get into UA’s hero course and get his hero license fully quirkless. He plans for every wild, unlikely scenario he can think of because his anxiety gets so bad if he doesn’t go through every possible outcome, every way his life could landslide into disaster–– but Izuku never planned for this.

Izuku doesn’t think. He just moves.

(Or: Izuku saves the number one hero, gets a hero license way earlier than anyone wanted, realizes that maybe hero society isn’t as great as he thought it was, and everything just kind of falls apart from there.)

Fantastically original revisioning of canon, where Izuku meets Yagi and starts on his path earlier. I loved how the author hit a lot of the big setpieces and emotional arcs but shuffled and reimagined them into completely new things, AND jam-packed them with friendship and banter and frank discussion of the flaws of heroes/media/society and cool worldbuilding for how the hero business works. Very long and very satisfying.

jk u r entitled to ur opinion (this might even be a troll!!! i hope not but if u r thank u for giving me this opportunity) but allow me to convince u that wangxian is Good.

i think there is a lot to be said about a man who grew up in a rigid environment that teaches u to, at best, keep ur emotions controlled and at worst, bottle up all ur feelings bc everything negative is Wrong, and a man who bleeds w emotion in everything he does meeting and being so fascinated w each other.

like here lwj is, maybe not happy but content w his life and his viewpoints and role in his sect, and here comes wwx, who might come off as irritating and reckless to others but is actually so selfless and kind and willing to do the right thing. meanwhile he’s also everything the lan sect seems to disapprove of. he’s loud! he’s too curious! too disrespectful! too willing to laugh and rage and run! AND YET! this is part of what makes him Good. And lwj is absolutely FLABBERGASTED by it.

AND WWX! here is a man who lost his parents and survived on the streets and has grown up in a home that was sometimes not a home and sometimes a home with cracks and scrapes and bruises and blood! here is a man who believes not in authority but in PEOPLE, especially those who society likes to say supposedly don’t matter. here is a man who knows who he is but also knows in this society that he will never measure to their expectations and he will never be more than what people believe he is (a ward, a servant, a menace, a nuisance) and he’s okay with that because he knows that as long as he helps people, it won’t matter his stance in society. he also knows that many high born cultivators Don’t Care. And he’s fine w that.

Then comes lwj.

He’s boring, he’s stubborn, too stoic, too rigid, too beautiful, too fun to piss off, but he’s good. Not in the way jfm or jyl or even jc is, lwj seemingly dislikes wwx for what he does, not who he is. even lqr has a personal bias against wwx (which was also so weird to me like. ur a grown man get over it) but lwj takes wwx at face value. Gets punished with him rather than letting wwx solely take the blame. is irritated bc wwx is not acting like the other guest disciples and also refuses to leave lwj alone but its never about his status or upbringing or rumors or bias-it’s simply ‘i’ve never met a bitch like this gd’ and wwx is so INTRIGUED by the heir of a sect who does what is right by what is ACTUALLY right!!! Its not about getting recognition or praise or money or power!! lwj is just morally a good person. and wwx respects him for that. and also thinks its funny when he gets mad.

ssc wangxian is so painful bc of this. they respect each other. they know the other is good. but lwj is still unsure of wwx place in his world as a member of the lan sect. wwx is deeply traumatized and hanging on by a literal thread while still being a victim of his status (bc even during a war wwx is still who he is and the cultivation world, though having its uses for him can not stand for it).

and then post ssc it’s worse bc lwj just wants to HELP but his version of it is the opposite of what wwx needs. and wwx legitimately can’t accept the help bc it won’t matter! he has no golden core! the one thing that kept society from completely crushing him and it’s gone! and he doesnt regret it but he’s also so tired of never being able to escape it.

then the wen remnants. it begins as a debt but wwx has spent his ENTIRE LIFE teetering on the edge of a life of privilege and one of servitude and has made it his goal to not only be righteous, but help those who need it.

and lwj KNOWS this. he SEES the wen remnants! he meets a-yuan!! he cares!! but he is surrounded by a world that doesnt. i am of the firm belief that even if the sect leaders had known who exactly was in the BM they would Not have cared. jc didnt. nmj probably wouldnt. and lxc is too trusting of jgy and too interested in neutrality until Directly Provoked to consider speaking up.

and lwj is trying to figure out how to help without caging wwx but also he wont listen but also lwj doesnt know why he wont carry a sword but then jzx then nightless city then jyl and then and then and then-

Arguably, lwj biggest character arc is after wwx death. He’s beaten by his sect and unable to even attempt to go to the BM until much later and he finds A-Yuan and he’s put in seclusion and-

He. Understands.

Because, surprisingly, it’s less about wwx but more about realizing that the cultivation world was wrong. His sect was wrong.

And the beautiful thing about wangxian is that theyre so different in so many ways, but fundamentally, they are the same. At the end of the day, they share a soul and not in a cheesy way-in an ‘i understand who you are, maybe i dont know your every thought and feeling but i know YOU. your faults are you just as your strengths are you and i SEE you and thats enough.’

uh. all this to say that i v much love wangxian and view wn and wq as wei yings family. not as love interests but as ppl who loved and love wwx in the way u love a stranger who became a friend who became family who became a home. So. Sorry for the length 😬

Moderately Rare Untamed/MDZS Fic Recs

For when you find fic from sorting by kudos, but you’ve got tag fatigue and you want to read something new. Or, hey, maybe you just want some MDZS fic recs. I’m not here to judge. * means it’s incomplete, for those of you that care.

Obligatory WangXian Category:

crack in the mirror by the_pretzel*: The premise of this one is that Wei Wuxian gets transported from the modern world into a mystery novel series, set in ancient China. But he’s in the body of a character that’s about to get married, and then murdered by his husband. So he breaks the engagement by starting a new one with Lan Wangji and then the first chapter ends. This one is a rollercoaster. WWX soon discovers that his character’s been keeping secrets, and he’s got to figure them out if he wants to get out of this alive. If there was a best drama award for fics, this one would get it. Every chapter has me on the edge of my seat in a different way, as WWX gets out of one mess only to find himself in a bigger one. And that doesn’t even touch on the romance - this is one of the ones where you can just about feel all the pining LWJ is doing, even though it’s WWX pov and he’s oblivious to all of it. Honestly, this fic is the reason this rec list exists.

I’m putting this under WangXian, because it’s a story about Lan Wangji and you can’t really have LWJ without the pining, but the real core of the story is the family LWJ has built in Cloud Recesses. Lan Shizui and Lan Xichen, and eventually (because this series starts just after WWX dies - what, I did say I liked crying) Wei Wuxian joins in. There’s even a little Wen Ning! If you like having feelings and also any of the characters I’ve mentioned, like, at all, this series is worth checking out.

The Terminus of Gravity by sealdog: Every fandom needs a space opera au, and sealdog delivers. This is pretty much a strait transportation of the plot of canon to the future and also space, with a side of epistolary and Wen remnants family time, and I’ll stop there because I don’t really want to spoil it. I’m a huge sucker for melancholy and pining and also well written space operas, because even if the premise isn’t your game, it is well written, and it’s worth a read.

Tales from Bunny Mountain by telarna: Lan sect turns into bunnies because of an excess of yin ener- look, we get Lan Zhan as a bunny with bonus Lan Shizui as a bunny. Do you really care why? This is another one of those fics that’s in the WangXian section because if LWJ and WWX are in a fic together, some things just come naturally, but the real draw for me is- well, I’m not going to lie, most of the draw was LWJ as a bunny, but I stayed with the fic for Jin Ling. Good Jin Ling characterization and a lovely, mischievous WWX, who also happens to be a very good uncle. And we have Lan sect as bunnies. Terrible, troublesome bunnies. 11/10, a must read.

through a window softly by impossibletruths: Okay, finally, we finish off the WangXian section with a fic that is actually about WangXian, not just featuring it prominently. through a window softly is a college au where LWJ and WWX are two different types of music major and also neighbors. WWX plays flute and LWJ plays violin and sometimes they stand outside their apartments and play together and pine for the mystery person that’s playing music with them. Look, they fall in love through playing music together, I’ve been looking for a fic like this since WWX first pulled out his flute in canon. There’s misunderstandings and identity porn, if you need some excellent bonus reasons to click this one, and I enjoyed both of those immensely. But what I really, truly loved was WangXian and love and music, and the intersection of all three.

Nie Huaisang: gen edition. Because I have a favorite character and that’s your problem now.

Mistakes We Made by Rachel3*: Nie Huaisang travels back in time and decides to prevent his brother’s death. This is the Nie Huaisang fic for me. I love love love his characterization here. Rachel3 strikes the delicate balance between the sweet kid he once was and the mastermind he grows up to be, making him competent but not an OP genius and sympathetic but not, like, a very good person. The plot is complex and realistic, tackling the sort of complex struggles (both interpersonal and large scale) that time travel fics very rarely bother with. If you've ever been curious about NHS, if you’ve ever even wanted to know him slightly better, this is the fic for you.

The Lost Cause by KouriArashi: AU in which Nie Huaisang and Jin Guangyao work together to take down Jin Guangshan from the beginning. I recommended the last fic for good characterization. I can’t in good conscience say the same for this fic, but that’s kind of the point. If you’re tired of moderation and realism and just want someone to take the hammer and fix canon already, this is the story for you. It’s hilarious and cathartic, and manages to be totally lighthearted even though it’s 100% about murder and manipulation. 

say those words (it’s not forgotten) by paranoid_fridge: This is edging on too well known for this list, but hey! My recs, my rules. And this is an absolute must read for everyone ever. If you haven’t read it, you should, and if you have read it, you can probably stand to do it again. This is a story about Nie Huaisang’s birthday. It’s a slice of life story, and a character study, and a little bit of a feel good hurt comfort fic, and it does all of those things magnificently. The author tags every relationship in this fic except the one braincell trio, which is a shame because it really is a NHS & WWX & JC fic, and if you weren’t craving one of those then why are you in this fandom? Why are you on my reclist? 

SangCheng is my OTP and that is also your problem: 

best behavior by inberin: I might as well take this space to recommend the whole sangcheng revenge au (dancing ashes under the sun (will cast their shadow when the winds rise) by paranoid_fridge really is the fic for it, but it’s too well known to make this list). The premise is simple, Jiang Cheng lost his golden core, the Wens won, and Nie Huaisang is taking them down from the inside with JC as his right hand man. best behavior makes the list for JC and NHS trolling each other (my favorite part of any sangcheng fic), and the lovely angst of two teenagers who grew up much too fast. The writing style of this one is lovely and poetic, the imagery is on point, and the sangcheng chemistry is the best.

Of Trespassing and Table Slams by LiteralistSin: I’ve put a fluffy fic in every category so far, and it’s SangCheng’s turn. There’s not much plot to this one, just SangCheng trying to outmaneuver each other and NHS being a little shit, and JC getting to win for once. Oh, yeah, and NHS gets kissed on a table. Everything my SangCheng loving heart needs.

everything rynleaf has ever written:  I’m putting this one under sangcheng because rynleaf has three sangcheng fics, and I couldn’t pick just one. Really though, you should at least check out What Remains of Meng Yao too, if you like crying. The sangcheng fics all strike the lovely balance between sangcheng tension and trolling each other and really truly sincerely caring about each other beneath all of it. Rynleaf writes some of the sweetest Jiang Cheng you ever did see, even when you’re looking through NHS’ jaded eyes. NHS is great here too, in all his secrets and his magnificent bastardry, you can just feel the smug smile he’s got on in every scene.

our footsteps sing a reckless serenade by ThirtySixSaveFiles: Because I cannot believe this one has so few kudos. Seriously, it’s a 46,000 word long modern with magic au where Jiang Cheng and NHS have an arranged marriage and fall in love. And that’s not even getting into the intrigue and the secrets NHS is keeping, and the murder mystery- There’s a lot of reasons to love this fic, and you definitely want to read it and discover all of them.

The Art of Jealousy

He knew better than to let his emotions get the best of him. Yet for some reason you had him in the palm of your hand. Not just him, but his heart. He had never before felt something as strong as every heartbeat around you. He would hear it in his head, feel it down his spine.

How utterly unfair life could be.

Jiang Cheng was a difficult person to deal with. It didn't take a genius to realise it. Hell, even he knew it. And he never really minded, that is until he met you. Kind and compassionate, strong and level-headed, intelligent eyes, quick wits, and frankly - a billion more qualities he had grown to...fancy, as he'd call it reluctantly. It took a war and some serious trauma on his side to realise, that maybe love wasn't a COMPLETE waste of time, and that maybe he would be allowed to experience it...not.

Jiang Cheng was a difficult person and he knew it. He also knew, that his brother Wei Wuxian was charming and funny, good-looking and of course - a ginormous flirt. He also knew people enjoyed jokes and flirting. And he was well-aware those weren't his strongest suit. But as he stayed from a distance, watching you laugh cheerfully at one of Wei Wuxian's trillions of ingenious jokes, his arm wrapped around your shoulders, he so wished he could be like that.

Of course, that you'd fall for that idiot. Who wouldn't? Although in his opinion, that would be abysmal, who was he to judge? That's right. Who was he to have a say in this? Yet he kept on wishing you'd turn to him instead, laugh with him instead, hug him instead, look for HIS company, HIS opinions. And with each longing stare your way, he'd get increasingly angry - at himself, at you and above all, at Wei Wuxian.

What he failed to notice during his bouts of rage were the longing stares you threw right back at him, and the knowing looks Wei Wuxian would give you. You'd told him a while back about your growing fondness of the Jiang sect leader and, as the great best friend he was, he'd vowed to help you win over his burning heart. In actuality, Wei Wuxian already suspected, that his brother had also harboured a certain attraction towards you, all he needed was a little bit of solid proof.

And god, you try everything. Cooking him something? He found the two of you before it was ready and got angry he wasn't invited. (though he denied that reasoning) Buying him something? He was in an exceptionally bad mood all day. (totally not because you went to the market with Wei Wuxian.) Drinking tea with him and just talking? Duty called and he had to go to work. Accompanying a night hunt? Jiang Cheng had to monitor Jin Ling and just as you were about to be attacked, Wei Wuxian (ofc) came to help. (JC just has 0 luck.) Clearly, it wasn't working out.

Currently you were in the middle of your plan to make him confess 'notice you'. Or rather, Wei Wuxian's plan. You weren't all that aware of it. And as Jiang Cheng angrily scowled at the two of you, he knew he was succeeding.

The younger brother couldn't stand it anymore. That shameful display of digusting affection made him want to carve his heart out and throw it right at you. Instead of throwing a scene, however, he decided for once to be the bigger person and *totally not in a demonstrative manner* walk away - an action both WWX and you noticed immediately.

Returning to his private study, he plopped on his chair, trying his darn hardest to stop himself from destroying his surroundings. Futile. In a sudden wave of anger, he pushed all of his scrolls and documents off his desk, letting them scatter around the room. His mind was screaming at him, but his heart was louder. He was done with wasting time on these foolish emotions. Who needed love anyways? It only makes you weaker. He wasn't about to embarrass himself with such stupid feelings.

His thoughts were interrupted, when there was a small knock on the door. "Who is it?", he asked sternly. He wanted to be alone. "It's me, Y/N." And just like that his tough act crumbled. "What do you want?"

"May I come in?"

"Yes."

Stepping inside, you were met with a clearly fuming Jiang Cheng, sitting amongst a few dozen scattered scrolls and sheets of paper. He averted his gaze away from you, as he crossed his arms.

"So? What do you want?" the harshness in his voice made your own anger rise, but no - you had it all under control.

"I think we need to talk about something important. But A-Cheng, what happened here?" you gestured to the scrolls.

"If it's that important, why don't you go ask Wei Wuxian for help? Or just go bother anybody else, but me." There it was - that childish jealousy Jiang Cheng has always had. He didn't want to sound as mean as he did, but his anger got the best of him. And deep down he knew, that he was going to regret it. But he was going to think about it later.

"Because it has nothing to do with him." You felt your voice tremble. Maybe this wasn't a good idea after all. "You know, nevermind, forget what I said.."

Jiang Cheng's heart was drowning in pain and guilt. Yet the more he felt it, the more defensive he became.

"Yeah. Now leave. I have work to do and I'm pretty sure your lover is looking for you."

What? You moved closer, standing right in front of him. "My what? Jiang Wanyin, what are you even talking about? What lover???" But then it dawned upon you. Was....was he jealous? Was he acting like that, because of jealousy?

His cheeks reddened as he finally looked at you. "As if it isn't obvious. You and Wei Wuxian spend every second together. It's so obvious it hurts, damn it. So don't play s-"

He was interrupted by you pulling him in by the robes and leaving a sweet kiss on his thin lips. You were right - he was jealous. And currently, he was so stunned he almost forgot how to breathe. Once you pulled away he nearly fell back. His face was now beat red, eyes wandering over your face, lost in the disarray that was his mind.

"A-Xian and I aren't lovers. We're friends. He was helping me try to confess...to you. You're the one I fell in love with." Suddenly you felt very small under his gaze, as you muttered the last of your confession.

And in that very moment, Jiang Cheng's entire world came crashing down like a tsunami. It was...him? Actually him? Not Wei Wuxian, not anybody else - but him? All this time?

"Wha-" He didn't know how to respond. He had yelled at you, nearly sent you away all for nothing. And suddenly realization hit him. You had just kissed him. He gathered himself as much much as possible, nerves practically wrecking him on the inside.

"If that is true, then...You idiot-" Instead of finishing his sentence, he just sighed, before pulling you in for another kiss. Wrapping an arm around your waist and burying the other in your hair, he whispered against your lips.

"Be mine."

"I already am"

"Good."

You decided, that for the time being you wouldn't mention his jealousy. After all, who'd ruin such a wonderful moment?

"You were jealous, weren't you?"

Oh man (gender neutral)! I saw the ask about Shen Jiu and how his fandom was like JC's and let me tell you, I got flashbacks to that time I opened my activity page and that one hardcore JC stan, infamous for being really nasty (don't know where she's at now, don't care, but I'm sure you might know who I'm talking about), had reblogged my Shen Jiu gifset from the donghua and tagged it with shits about how he was the only interesting character and how what he did was not that ugly and was even deserved, and basically you could change Shen Jiu's name to JC in the post and it would still fit. I'm not going to say all JC stans like Shen Jiu, but there's some interesting parallels to make there.

Oh I think we all remember that one and how bored she got during quarantine... think she got bored and moved onto greener pastures since can't troll when you get blocked enough times by the whole fandom.

The overlay of being(hardcore) JC and SJ fans is interesting since like... half the time they don't even actually enjoy the main body of the work and simp for the antagonist. It's all a very unhappy way to be in the fandom and I see that from both sides that focus on one, the other, or both.

TGCF itself is ignored, maybe because that is the one that really doesn't have such an overt emotional/physical abuser in such an intimate form of a friend and mentor like with JC and SJ. All very... torture porny in a way with posts catered to the relationships they have with WWX, LBH, or very... glorified when it comes to YQY. The twisting of actual canon facts is a circus treat pretty much lol.

Detective LWJ gets assigned a case that requires expert knowledge in the programming trajectories of underwater drones and WWX is the preeminent expert in the field (his papers are well-known, often cited, his courses are always jam-packed full of wide-eyed first years because he’s engaging and funny and makes mechatronics easy to understand)

He’s also a massive nerd, likes to drink and smoke and dresses in ripped skinny jeans and oversized shirts and his hair is a disaster and LWJ mistakes him for a student at first and is horrified that this unkempt troll of a man is the celebrated Professor Wei Wuxian (’I’m looking for the professor’; ‘I am the professor!’)

When WWX starts getting caught up in talking about the details of the case though, he’s lightning-fast and extremely observant, and even LWJ (who is by no means dumb) has trouble keeping up with his techno mumbo-jumbo so he starts reading up on the subject and ofc that means he ends up reading WWX’s papers and is irrationally upset that this hobo-looking man who he can probably bend in half like a twig is such an amazing writer as well (he’s very upset, guys)

Somehow this turns into some weird James Bond shit and they get ambushed by thugs hired by some rich weirdo who wants to hack underwater drones used for research to bomb other countries and steal their shit or something dramatic and first-world-problemy like that, and that’s when LWJ also finds out that WWX knows Wing Chun (think Ip Man 1: “我要打十個!”) so if he wants to bend him over he’ll probably need to work for it

They fight their way out of the situation, save the day, the rich weirdo gets arrested and later tried for treason, and LWJ rejoices when he finally gets to bend that snarky, raggedy twig gremlin in half after a sparring match

ForeverSadJYL7.--- More than a decade of heartache, and JZX still didn't change, Jiang Yanli knew which fight she should keep on fighting, and which one she should just gave up. If the engagement wasn't meant to be, then so be it. If anything, her heart swelled up and there's a warm feeling bubbled inside her when she knew WWX defended her honour even when he knew it'd sullied his instead. Seeing him didn't even make an excuse when Madam Yu berated him, make her feel she was still "worth it"...

ForeverSadJYL8--- JZX couldn't appreciate her no matter how hard she tried. While WWX he was bragging and praising her at every hour even at the smallest matter. He said, she was the best and she was the prettiest of all. Before, she fell to JZX because of his prince-like self and her daydream of being swooped off her feet by a handsome prince. Now,JYL realized that when her prince didn't come with his carriage, there's still a knight in shining armor with a donkey(LMAO, can't help but trolling)

ForeverSadJYL9.--- WWX was her knight in shining armor for JYL. He was always ready to protect her, to defend her every bit, and put her on a pedestal. The child before her grew up to be an upstanding, strong and honorable young men, and JYL couldn't help but see him in the way woman see a men. JYL could only hope that with her betrothal now severed, and as WWX grew up and proved his worth even more, perhaps...she could hope for a chance that her parent somehow see him as a noteworthy suitor..

ForeverSadJYL10.--- BUT! Life is a bitch! Hope is the cruelest thing ever. As the fire raged and swallowed everything his sect ever had, it also blazed the hopes JYL had in life. Her parent was dead. Her brother fought alone, and WWX was missing God knew where. JYL wondered if there's anything crueler that fates prepared for her...But she must stand her ground and stay strong. Her brother needed her. And she could dismiss her personal feelings to continue being emotional support for her brother.

ForeverSadJYL11.--- When WWX finally appeared again, she was relieved beyond belief. There's still limit where she could smile and smile and encourage others without another person who did the same for her. JC is her brother, he was a good boy, but he's bad with his words and he's not good with affection. WWX was someone JYL had as her oasis with his ever so bright and returning smiles and all of his showering affections. It was hard for his presence not to be yearned when he was gone.

ForeverSadJYL12.--- WWX returned, but his smiles didn't return with him. Everyone might have not notice, even JC didn't notice, with his laughter and smiles WWX still plastered on his face. But JYL knew. She knew everything about him after all. She knew it was strenuous. She knew his outwards laugh didn't feel genuine at all. He was changed. But which people who didn't change in this raging war? But at least she knew that his smiles when he finally met her again was warm and full of relieves...

ForeverSadJYL13.--- JYL knew that WWX liked her lotus roots and pork rib soup...Not because of an amazing recipes. She knew because it was something that reminded him of home...the taste that reminded him he had a place he belonged to. And JYL would be glad to cook it over and over again if it could reassure him he still had people who loved him and would be there for him. The incident with JZX was something she didn't predicted to be honest. Though, it made JYL deepened her feelings towards WWX

ForeverSadJYL14.--- It was the Jins who helped her when Lotus Pier fall, so JYL just wanted to express her gratitude by always sparing JZX of her cooking. It was not unexpecte that JZX accused her of lying and stealing other's efforts, she didn't feel surprised that JZX even dared to insult her in public, without even trying to find the truth at all. She was, after all, not worthy of anything to the Young Master of Jin Clan. Though she knew it all, it's still hard to keep her tears from falling.

ForeverSadJYL15.--- It was all WWX again, always him, who defended her, who protected her from even a malicious remarks. He didn't hesitate to throw a punch and berated JZX, even at the chance of YMJ lost an ally to the war. Honestly...just how many times WWX did proved her again that she was worthy, more than she ever thought. It's hard not to love someone like him. JYL just wanted for the war to end, their life returned to normal, She,with her brother, and the men she loved with all her heart.

ForeverSadJYL16.--- But! Did she somehow forget that hopes were the cruelest thing? The war ended, and yet their life didn't return to normal. WWX was praised for a hero in a battlefield. But he was a mere madman in time of peace. And she knew that WWX understand it himself. JC was struggling with building a sect. If building a sect was just literally built the building, perhaps it'd be much easier, but it was not. With Madam Jin back again to shove her on JZX's arms, she knew she had it coming.catmaid-san

ForeverSadJYL17---JYL knew she couldn't help JC in anything. The only thing she could offer was by securing an ally to Jin Sect with marriage. She let it happened. Madam Jin blatant matchmaking, JZX's insufferable presence, she'd bear it all for her brother...even when it include sacrificing her love towards WWX. In all honesty, when WWX once asked her "how do you know you like someone", JYL wanted so badly to answer "the feelings i feel with you right now is how i know i love someone so dearly"

ForeverSadJYL18.--- WWX left Lotus Pier. She always knew with how tense the situation surrounding WWX post-war, it'd be the matter of time for WWX to break it and left the cultivation world. JYL knew and she understand it. WWX was always like that. He helped others in need no matter he went, and erected justice he believed. It was after all one of the thing she loved in WWX. If life must go on then let it be, let them walked their only choice path in life, and search for happiness along the way.

ForeverSadJYL19.--- And yet, she can't help but wanting to visit him, to show him her wedding dress. It was all a wistful thinking. Of wanting WWX to see her in a wedding attires no matter what. She once dreamed to marry JZX and live as a princess-like. But a dream was only a dream. The one thing she wished more sincerely in her life was to marry WWX and be loved forever. JYL wanted to be selfish one more time. She wanted him to see her as a bride and wanted him to praise her as a pretty bride..

ForeverSadJYL20.--- Life went on. For the n-th time JYL's wishes to be finally happy wasn't granted. JZX died. It was said WWX who killed him. She grieved for a man, though not the one she loved, but at least for the father of her child who had tried his best to mend his mistakes in the past. She knew WWX wouldn't touch JZX without any provoking attempt. But even when she believed WWX, for her beloved wasn't what people think at all. Still, life is a bitch. People already cried for his death...

ForeverSadJYL21.--- "A-Xian...before, why did you run? I wanted to tell you...,"--------------------------------------------JYL once wondered if fates had ever smiled at her. She once wondered if things could be crueler than she already had. She was wrong. Apparently fates had unlimited cruelty reserved for her. Before she knew it, her body already moved and protected WWX from looming death. WWX always proved her that she was worth it. And for once JYL wanted to show him he was also worth it...

Tossing your question right back at you, I'd love to hear your thoughts on what might have changed (or not changed) if Nie Dad had lived!

Ive been musing this all day, to be honest, i made the mistake of reading it right before getting up. Ooops. Im not as eloquent as you and i have a patchy memory of book canon events, this also touches a lot of hc. I do believe many things would change if dad-Nie had remained alive. As you said in my ask, nmj would be maybe less angry, more forgiving, more easygoing. One hc i have is that he became sect leader young, 15 at most, I also think nmj didnt go to CR to study, by the time he meet lxc he was already sect leader. Making friends was hard, but lwj is not the only stubborn lan. Another general hc i have is that the Nies have... trouble to be seen as equal to other cultivators, regardless of how strong or smart they are, they are not gentry, they are the descendants of a butcher, an unclean profession, so they are less. Maybe with dad-Nie alive nmj would not be forced to grow up so fast, maybe he still will have nice hobbies, maybe he can spent his free time indulging in art or music and maybe nhs would be a little more disciplined in saber practice. I do think nmj is the responsible and dedicated kind of person, having hobbies and friends will not deter him from his rigorous training. I confess im among in the bunch of people that believe he is dage for everyone... or at least of everyone that manages to get close to him. He doesnt baby people, but he indulges them and is very judgemental of their life choices, with dad-Nie alive, he doesnt have to fill the dad-mother-brother roll for nhs, he is just dage, i like to imagine him being a troll and he will be so shamelessly with nhs and his friends (nhs will be all “dage stop embarrasing me infront of my friends!) just because he can and this heirs are all so stuck up with very awful parents. Nmj trust easy, but once that trust is betrayed, well, we all know Jgy never got back that trust and things only got so patched up (skin deep) because of lxc and nmj wanting to believe it even if he didnt felt it. Maybe this time around, as dage had time to be a kid and a teen he can be more innocent, more inclined to second chances. O3r maybe he wont because that is just how he is regardless of his father. Ive seen countless takes of nmj being so much like his father... im a contrary person, i got this mean satisfaction in going against certain things, this is one of them (there is a bigger one, but that one is not relevant haha). I think nmj is more like mom side if the family, nhs is more like his father, both in appearance and temperament. Which may be a little weird to see dad-Nie like nhs considering the broken saber business, but part of me likes to think that nhs saw himself in his father and his eventual madness and that made him not want to have the same fate, forgoing saber training as much as dage let him get away with. I have a lot of thoughts on the saber-master thing the nies have, but this is getting far too long and i feel like im rambling about everything instead of answering the damn question. I imagine dad-Nie being alive means we can have a softer more relaxed nmj, still strong, still dedicated and dutiful (he is an heir, he cant be anything else), he is smart and resourceful, talented. Maybe this is why wrh takes notice of him eventually, maybe this time around nmj can get along with wen xu (another hc is that wen xu is older than nmj, there is a big age gap between wen xu and wen chao), maybe, like with wen zhuliu, nmj gets noticed by talent alone. I believe at some point wwx mentions that nmj is in the top 3 people he wouldnt want to mess with (besides that one part when he slaps nmj corpse abs in a very appreciative way), that kind of speaks of nmj talent and power. I do like the idea of a Qishan Wen and Qinghe Nie alliance a lot. I admit, im very biased, i often tell that other sect leaders are... not ideal. Everyone has their faults, yes, but in the grand scheme of things, jgs is an opportunist, he wont move unless he knows he can win (and he won only because jgy gave him the opportunity... just to be killed soon after), lqr is more of a scholar than a leader, even if he does a neat job managing the sect, lxc is a mediator, if there can be middle ground he will take it and be happy even if he is just postponing the inevitable (we see this in the 3zun dynamics a lot) and jfm is a conformist, he doesnt like conflict and will look away until the fire is too big to do anything about it. Maybe im being to mean, but this is they way i see it, feel free to politely disagree with me). Qishan had the numbers if not the talent, Qinghe had the talent, but not the numbers (another hc, the Nies are the newest of the great 5). An alliance between them sounds like a sweet deal to me. Maybe as you said, an alliance between this two could end up in a mostly everyone lives. Maybe Wen Qing can have a nice friend on Nmj (bonding over little brothers, maybe?) and nhs and Wen Ning can also have a nice friendship, be less lonely. Maybe as nmj grows into a man, wrh interest can shift, maybe this time nmj can allow himself to be a little more free to have something more with someone. Maybe with dad-Nie alive things can go a little happier, maybe dad-Nie will die in some other form and nmj would still be stuck as sect leader at a too young age, maybe this time wrh can be an ally instead of an enemy. Can you imagine it? wrh being friends with the late sect leader (only dad-Nie was bold enough to be honest, instead of giving blind praise and wrh appreciating that?) and offering help to the young heir, a few years later getting struck with the realization that the young boy grew up into a fine man (the “oh shit, he is hot” realization hehe). There are a lot of scenarios i would love to explore, but this is getting long, as my usual ramblings go, i need to cook tomorrow lunch and finish certain piece i need ready by tomorrow (fuck). Hopefully i didnt sidetrack too much, nor did i miss the point. Ugh. See! im not eloquent or well versed!
