Been binging Courage the Cowardly Dog lately and have noticed some actual amazing writing in it so I’m gonna rant.

So starting off- courage. S4 Ep13 actually provides a lot of info about his backstory which i find really interesting. We learn that he HAD biological parents but after an accident he caused they were stolen from him and sent away. I honestly think this explains A LOT about why Courage is the way he is. The interesting thing is that this Eps second half is a whole bit about him feeling the need to be "perfect" due to a comment Eustice made (more on him later). Genuinely I don't think that that pairing was an accident at all. I think Courage feels at fault for his parents, which explains his constant anxiety and need to be "perfect".

Courage absolutely SPIRALS in this ep after Eustice says he can't do anything right- hallucinations, night terrors, and genuine crying which we don't see that often (usually he just looks sad). Which makes perfect sense because he's convinced himself that his parents demise was all his fault. He's constantly crying for help by putting his life on the line to make up for what he believes he did. His need to protect others his constant self doubt... it just all makes sense. (We also see him growl in this episode which personally i think is interesting because he NEVER does that with anyone else despite how many evil people he's encountered, so clearly he has a lot of genuine pent up emotion) I also possibly believe that his dialect is supposed to represent him going nonverbal. He CAN talk but the only time we really see him do it is when he's with Muriel, who he feels the most safe around, and in the "perfect" episode when told to speak his words become more and more incomprehensible the more stressed he gets. Just food for thought.

In another ep Eustice visits his mother which honestly... even though it was meant to be satirical holy shit its lore filled.

Ok so Eustice is a POS, it's not a secret he's a jerk and i despise him. However...he actually has reasoning behind his actions. (WHAT???? I know) We see a lot of parallels between him and his mom. Basically.. he treats courage the way his mom treats him. That, along with the hunting episode where we see his older brother basically spit on him and his passions, i mean cmon..this man is an actually decently fleshed out character. A textbook example of family trauma and how it effects you even as an old man, and how it can effect your kids by making them internalize everything.

The fact that a cartoon show from the 90s about a screaming dog was able to accurately and respectfully portray family and childhood trauma is just so.. bizarre to me. I honestly don't even know if they knew what they were doing but damn.

Episode 44: Desperate Times

Now where were we? Ah yes. Cutter lied about their deaths and has an evil girlfriend who makes his robots. Hilbert and Lovelace told Minkowski about the death thing to get her on board, and once they have her, she should be able to get Doug and Hera on board.

Great point Doug. How many secret rooms can one space station have?

And how many copies of the SI-5? Because we already had two Duck boys. If another Kepler strolls in and starts talking about Whiskey again, that might just be too much for me.

No Minkowski. You don't want to kill anyone. But I understand.

Wow. Doug knows some fancy words. "Commander Eiffel" 😂

Oh, they're actually laughing. I'm sorry Doug. Wow, he just made that up too, very convincing.

Aw, Minkowski. I want to hug her. If she doesn't make it back to her husband...

oh yay, she and Doug are talking it out! Friends! My feelings exactly Hera! 💕💕💕

Hera is so sweet. It's weird to think she was built by and modeled after someone so horrible.

Ah. Taking a late night stroll around the ship Hilbert?

Hilbert. NO. NO NO NO NO NO. NOT THE EVIL CHAIR.

Evil chair will kill you. Evil chair will show them your brain which shows them your plan to rebel against them. Do not trust the evil chair Hilbert. For a smart man, you make some remarkably and unbelievably dumb decisions.

I want to believe in them. I do, I really really do. But unfortunately, I know that there is an entire other season left. So...

It's not looking good. Personally, I think the most expendable is Hilbert. They can kill the character off without having to fire the actor. If anyone's about to die, it's him.

The "terrible trio", I like it Doug. Good nickname for SI-5.

The um...the blunt force trauma face?

Oh my this hypothetical of Maxwell, Kepler, and Jacobi falling apart is music, sweet music.

If only...if only.

They are really counting on the SI-5 acting exactly like this. I hope they get it right. I do love the way they make Whiskey Boy out to be such a cartoon villain. He really is.

Oh they're conflicted about who to target. That's right Hera. Target Duck boy. I mean...they did already kill him once, right?

Although slight problem. Let's say they do kill SI-5. Let's say they try to fly the ship back to earth. Can't Cutter just blow the ship up remotely? He'll probably send a missel after them before they even get into the atmosphere. I mean...what would you even do in this situation? He's literally got them bargaining for every second of their lives. Makes you wonder how many teams he has out there like this...

What happened? No gas? Oh dear. Plan B?

HIT MAXWELL WITH A WRENCH? POP A WEASEL?

I don't like how this is going.

"I'm glad I have you alone" Hilbert stop it.

Opponent is not going to hesitate to kill you. That's true. But you can't forget who the enemies are. Cutter and Pryce. And yes. SOMETHING IS WRONG!

Oh dear. Well this is terribly awkward.

...um...so...Maxwell. Duck Boy. Fancy a mutiny?

Guess not. Oh dear. This is bad. This is very very bad.

IS NOT ABOUT THE CONTACT EVENT! IT'S ABOUT THEM GETTING BACK AND YOU KNOW IT.

I KNEW THAT YOU COULDN'T TRUST HER.

"Don't struggle?"

Not the brain sweeping. Maxwell you have lost all my respect, and likely your own if you still had any left in you.

Shut up Duck Boy, literally no one wants to hear from you.

Well this is a pickle. How will our heroes (and Hilbert) get out of this one? 👀

Episode 45: Desperate Measures

"Wakey-wakey", shut up errand boys.

"Passion for disciplining crew members, isn't that right Jacobi?" You're a sadist waste of space who works for a sadist waste of space, we got that Whiskey Boy.

Oh great. Another super secret room. There's probably thousands of them at this rate. A whole city in the sky.

What a nice little room of weapons. As a lover of dramatic irony, I do hope Dr. Robot and our dear Errand Boys find themselves on the other side of those weapons.

Hera you can delay having to respond to her commands! You can! Remember: You can't do this. You're not good enough. Use it to your advantage.

"I knew it!" you did Doug. And yeah, Hilbert didn't sink so low.

"Kill whoever you like least", well there goes Hilbert.

Good work Hera! 🥰 Oh dear it hurts.

THE VENTS! That's right! Go Minkowski!

Geez does Whiskey Boy ever tire of the sound of his own voice? I guess not.

Shut it Kepler! Yeah Doug! He can go to hell! Tell him off!

Doug: "You're crazy"

Kepler: "No Doug. I'm just a man that wants to be taken seriously. That's why I'm sitting here with a gun in one hand, glass of Whisky in the other, while singing "Eeny, meeny, miny, moe" like a cartoon supervillain. There's nothing more respectable or serious than that."

Lovelace is speaking FACTS. He has lost his humanity. But um...ironically so might have Lovelace. Or all of them still unclear on that.

"You're hilarious" "one more thing I have that you don't" ooohhh... dang, it that ain't the truth. No one will be as funny as Doug, but if anyone comes close it's certainly not Whisky boy.

"Very nice speech captain" Well it was better than the Whisky speech Kepler. Take notes.

That's right Lovelace. Who cares what Kepler see when he looks at you? No one. Because he is a waste of space.

She'll survive because of magic alien plot armor.

Aw, she did it for Doug. That's really sweet.

And...off goes the gun. But no screams. He better not have shot Doug.

"You have 30 minutes to think about what you've done. Then we'll talk about Eiffel."

I know I should be furious over the whole "what you've done" comment, but I gotta ask, how dangerously stupid is Kepler? 30 minutes is plenty of time to put a plan into action. What does Kepler need 30 minutes for? Swirling his Whisky around and telling Doug how much he loves the feel of it in his hands.

Why don't you mind your own business Maxwell? Why don't you shut up and mind your own business and throw yourself in the airlock?

Good stalling Hera...yes! Finally knocked out Dr. Robot. Now, as much as I am against murder, eye for an eye, and all that...in this situation, keeping her alive puts multiple innocents at risk.

Anyone got an eye on Duck Boy?

Kepler doesn't care about Maxwell! He doesn't care about anyone!

Doug...great speech for this to work, he has to care about human life, and he clearly doesn't.

Yeah, I don't really like chess either Doug.

Why do I feel like he's going to hurt Hera in a way that only Maxwell can fix?

Ah there he is. "I wouldn't do that so someone. I just blow people up to kill them! :)" ugh Duck Boy is the worst. I knew that he was off doing something silly. "Crazy Jacobi the loose canon" dude, you're Duck Boy. That's your existence.

And I knew Hilbert would be the one to go. They don't have to fire his voice actor to kill him, which makes him expendable.

Well it took a very long time to get here, but looks like Hilbert is finally gonna kick the bucket. And yeah, you guys have no idea how long they've been trying to kill Hilbert. If it was Doug, I'd be more worried, but between Hilbert and Doug, Doug's got the plot armor.

And...there he goes! Oh wait...did she shoot Maxwell! Oh be quiet Jacobi, it's not like you ever actually cared about her. If Cutter or Kepler ordered you to kill her, you would have done it.

You can't talk sense into him Doug. He's a nutcase. We established that.

I love Doug. "Well it's been a topsy-turvy day!"

And see Kepler? Not so fun playing with lives when yours is on the chopping block, now is it?

Yes Doug! Tell him! Oh poor Whisky Boy, are you gonna cry?

Right three people dead: Lovelace, Hilbert, and Maxwell. That's a lot. My money is on Lovelace coming back due to alien magic, Hilbert dead for good, maybe Maxwell lives on in Hera's memory or flashback land.

YES! I love Doug's loyalty to Minkowski!

Does Kepler have an escape pod? I feel like he would. Oh he's telling his duck boy to stand down. But duck boy doesn't seem too happy about that. I guess he cared a bit more for Maxwell than Kepler, even if he would have shot her if given the order.

"Finally over" hm...I seriously doubt that.

Ah yes the aliens. I wonder what they have to say about all this. And Kepler please shut up. "You want to be in charge of this mess, fine." The mutiny literally just happened on your watch. You spent half the crew budget on expensive Whiskey. You don't care at all that Maxwell is dead.

Episode 46: Bolero

Is that music? Um... what is this? I do wonder why they chose to send music, when they've demonstrated that they can send voices.

Yeah...this is a lot. And they lost their human doctor and robot doctor. As much as I hated them, they were useful. Unlike the errand boys, who only seem to be good a cowering in fear from ducks and giving speeches about whisky.

Oh and apparently they like music too. How nice.

"If the commander wishes for silence, then silence she shall have" and yet you're still talking.

Yeah...what do they do now. They have to warn everyone, expose Cutter and get him to jail, but the aliens are also invading. Oh gosh, are Cutter and Pryce aliens? Is this a plot to replace humanity with aliens? That at least makes more sense than Cutter's a loon who just wants to take a gander at some dangerous aliens, but why do I get the feeling that "Cutter's crazy" is what's actually happening here?

Oh right Kepler's special DNA. But your DNA still works even if it's detached from your body, right? 🧬

"We owe it to Lovelace, Hilbert, and Maxwell..." good work Doug. They were evil, they were flawed, but they were still humans.

Oh Hera. Wow, we don't have funerals for animals???? Yikes... I'm starting to see how she was modeled after Pryce now. In that case, I wonder what happened to Pryce. Also Hera, I get what you're saying, but that's an insult to animals. Many cats and dogs I've met are very loyal, kind, and useful.

oh dear she's talking to Lovelace's ghost/memory. 🥺 It's not your fault Minkowski. It was never your fault. And yeah...you all deserve to make it home.

That is if there is even a home to come back to...

Doug, Hera, come on. You're best friends. Wow. And yeah, she and Maxwell were friends, that's why she's so upset! Oh right...if one human friend betrayed her...oh Hera...Doug's not like her you know that! Maxwell would sell you out, Jacobi would sell her out, and Kepler would sell him out, but Doug? Doug would never sell anyone out.

"I know what it's like to not get a chance to say goodbye. And I don't think you're past the point of not caring. Not yet." That's sweet Doug. But you're giving him a bit too much credit. Oh he's mad he killed her? Fair enough, but Jacobi...you said yourself you were monsters! Do you really want to try to claim the moral high ground here? That's right Doug! Tell him! "You're gonna like it...I mean you're gonna feel sad!" Yeah! That's right! Shove the compassion down his throat Doug. Sometimes that's the way you gotta do it.

Minkowski is gonna have some pretty severe PTSD after this. I want to hug her.

Oh no, Hera's remembering Maxwell. "Was everything you did for me part of a secret evil plan?" it's not that simple Hera. Bad people can do good things. Good people can do bad things. Cognitive dissonance Hera, that's how it's possible. Compartmentalization. Circular and deluded thinking. And fake Maxwell is right. It's about you Hera. It's not about her. Forget about Maxwell. Forget about Pryce. You're better than them, and more human too.

Yes Hera, get the feelings out. No, Doug she's coming around!

Oh no...no no no...Doug is wasted isn't he? Kepler's private supply no doubt...oh no... oh Doug.

"I killed them Hera." no you didn't Doug! Intentions matter! You are the ship's moral compass. Don't drink yourself off.

"I'm a drunken mess whether I have a drink or not." oh Doug. Doug.

Please don't give yourself alcohol poison. Oh good self-talk from Hilbert. Yeah Doug never wanted anyone to die.

"How else did you think this was going to end?"

Aw, Doug has so much hope. Never lose that Doug. Never lose it. And yeah, it's nice to believe in redemption. It is theoretically possible. Though in certain cases, highly unlikely. I won't name names.

So...it's just Doug and Jacobi at the funeral? Well. This is incredibly awkward...

Oh right, Hera's never been to a funeral...

Oh nvm Kepler's here for the food. He's so gross.

They gave Hera grief but no way to deal with it? Oh she can't understand why they are gone? The "I wonder if I'll miss you when you go away forever too" is hitting different.

Minkowski came through!

Wow, Jacobi actually is able to say a few nice words.

Dr. Hilbert was a monster 😂. Fair. Completely fair. See ya later Doc. I think Hilbert would have liked it.

Oh don't let Kepler talk. He'd ruin the funeral. Though to be fair, he'd ruin anything.

Never mind looks like the aliens beat him to the punch.

Looks like the aliens decided to come early.

Uh...HERA?

KEEPING WHAT OUT?

Tell me the aliens aren't already here.

Is Lovelace coming back? Oh Kepler knew this was going to happen.

"It can't hear you." DO NOT CALL HER AN IT KEPLER. Alien or not, she's a...well she's a someone.

So she IS an alien? An alien who acts like her? Okay... and yes please, let's start at the beginning. It's about time Kepler. If you're going to talk, you might as well say something useful.

Now I've procrastinated enough but...wow this doesn't look good. Hopefully the crew can get back safely.

I finished getting ready for the day before I headed down stairs to join everyone for breakfast. I sit down right next to my mommy, Cordelia. She looks and smiles at me. " Wow look at you sweet girl. Got ready all by yourself. I'm so proud of you" My mommy says. I blush at her words. The rest of the girls sits down for breakfast. Yay it's pancake day! Everyone gets their plate and

starts eating. "Would you like me to cut up your food for you, baby girl" mommy asks. " Wes pwease" I say. Madison scoffs. " That's so weird" Madison says under her breath. My smile fades hearing her words. Mommy cuts up my pancakes into tiny bite sizes and starts fork feeding me. "That's it" Madison yells. I start to feel small at the yelling. Madison abruptly stands up. "Why do you baby Y/N? Is this some weird fetish you're into? I'd rather not have it near where I'm eating! You need to grow up Y/N! You need to stop being such a disappointment and get a life" She yells.

Her last two sentences triggered flashbacks of my abusive family and I flinch. On the verge of a panic attack I get up and run to mommy and I's bedroom and slam the door. I go to the corner of the room and curl up in a ball while trying to breathe correctly. I rock myself back and forth. Then the door opens and I whimper, scared that It was madison. The person walked right up to me and picked me up in their arms. It was mommy. She rocked me back and forth while rubbing my back. "Shh it's alright. Mommy's here. I've got you baby. You're safe with me" Mommy says to me.

After a bit I breathe normally. "Don't worry about Madison princess. She just doesn't understand and she is Madison of course too. Now how about we watch some cartoons and cuddle? Does that sound nice love" mommy asks. I nod in agreement. She gets under the covers with me along with my dog stuffie and pulls me close to her side. I wrap my arms around her waist. I know my mommy will always be there for me when I need her the most. She loves me and I love her too.

“Are you sure this is a good idea, Dad?” Chris eyed his father skeptically as he watched Eddie grab a few pans.

“I’m not that bad at cooking, bud. I can manage bacon and eggs.” Ed tousled Chris’ hair, earning a few swats from the child. “Why don’t you go and watch some cartoons while I get breakfast ready?”

Chris shrugged, sliding off his stool and walking slowly into the living room. “If you say so. I’ll have 9-1-1 on speed dial.”

Eddie laughed. “That’s not nice, mijo.” He smiled as Chris laughed, listening to the sound of the TV turning on as he got to work. It was just bacon and eggs, right? He had this, right?

He didn’t have this. Sure, he’d managed not to start a fire, but he was definitely sure that eggs weren’t supposed to look like the briquettes that were used for charcoal barbecues.

“Is breakfast going to be done anytime soon?” Chris called.

“Uh, yeah, just a few more minutes buddy!” he returned. “Just gimme time to revive the dead over here.” The latter statement was mumbled, said only so he could hear it. The chickens that laid these eggs were so coming after him if they ever met him.

“It smells like you might want to give up.”

“Oi!”

Chris had entered the kitchen, making a face as the smoke from the burnt eggs entered his nostrils. “How many eggs did you burn, Dad?”

Eddie shrugged. “I dunno, maybe six?”

“Why don’t you call Buck? He’s better at this than you.”

“I don’t need to call Buck for everything, mijo. Why don’t you go sit back down while I...” He looked down as Chris eyed him from the side. “...figure out how to fix this...”

“I don’t even think a wizard could fix that!” His son’s laughter drifted away as he went back to his cartoons.

He’s not wrong. Eddie picked up his phone, instinctively going to Buck’s contact. Should he really ring Buck at 8am on his day off to fix the massive fuck-up he was trying to call breakfast?

He hit the green “call” button before he could stop himself.

“What’s up, Eds?”

“Oh, Buck. I uh, might need your help.”

His best friend chuckled on the other end. It sounded a bit heavy, as if he was still tired, but not as if Eddie had woken him up. “Sure. What do you need?”

Eddie laughed nervously. “I may have ruined breakfast, and I have a very hungry kid on my hands.”

“You didn’t set anything on fire, did you?”

“Why does- No, I didn’t set anything on fire.”

Buck full-on laughed at Eddie’s reaction. “I’m kidding. I’ll be right there. Just- don’t try to cook anything else.”

“I won’t, I won’t.” He hung up the phone and sighed. “Well, I should try to clean this before Buck gets here. I’ll never hear the end of it.”

With his frying pan in the trash and cooking forgotten, Eddie heard a knock on the door fifteen minutes later. He opened the door to see Buck, grin on his face and a bag in hand. “What the hell, you never knock.”

“Well, a delivery man always knocks first.” Buck held up the bag and shook it. “I figured you had enough cooking trauma for one day and bought McDonalds. I just grabbed some Egg McMuffins - hope that’s fine.”

“Bucky!” Chris ran as fast as he could over to the door, barreling into the tall male. “Dad tried to cook again, did he tell you?”

Buck laughed. “Yeah, he did. He also told me he didn’t do too well.”

“He burned six eggs before he called you.”

“Chris! Way to rat me out!” Eddie pinched at Chris’ cheeks, earning squeaks of playful displeasure from his son.

“Why don’t we pick on your dad after we eat, huh? I have an Egg McMuffin and a hashbrown just for you. And I promise, the egg isn’t burnt.”

“Yay!” The young Diaz cheered, taking the bag from Buck and making his way into the kitchen.

Eddie took a deep breath. “Thanks for saving the day, Buck. I was sure he was about to call you himself.”

“What possessed you to try and cook? You’re a terrible cook.”

“You two just can’t give me a break, can you?”

“Of course not. I gotta pick on you. That’s what you love about me though, isn’t it?” Buck winked, walking into the kitchen. “Come on, let’s eat!”

Eddie stared after Buck, who was viciously tearing into the bag with Chris, and smiled softly. “Yeah, one of the things.”

Wednesday Reading Meme for 10-26-22

What I've Read - Omega Required - Dessa Lux (aka, fanfic writer Dira Sudis) - Werewolf Omegaverse m/m arranged marriage romance novel- I bought this in 2018, read 25% of it and then never picked it up again, because I am a fool. I finished it this week and I found the main couple really quite charming. Beau wants to be a werewolf doctor to humans, Rory ran away from home at 16 with an older man who promised to take good care of him and has some major trauma around sex. It's careful to show Rory's recovery, tho it's a romance novel so he's improving on a pretty brisk pace. Beau is used taking care of only himself and not asking for help so he makes some fairly stupid (but very in-character!) mistakes around his new job. The resolution is sweet and generally hits the points that think a thoughtful romance ought to. I am probably going to read other things Dira has written - this series has a couple of other books, and this is hitting a self-indulgent spot for me. Good world building around how werewolves would function in the open in the modern world.

Wife to the Marines: A Military Reverse Harem Romance by Krista Wolf (reverse harem het romance, straight woman with three straight men) - Well, this book had some great elements? The sex was fun, the character dynamics were a bit spare (perfectly fine for this genre) but what was there felt engaging, the plot was brisk and both acknowledged the silly elements but made them feel emotionally true to the female lead's internal life. I finished it and at the low price of $1, I feel like I got my money's worth. I have definitely paid more for worse.

But, oh man, I am too queer for this book. I am just too dang queer for this book. I literally picked this up because I was curious about the reverse harem romance sub-genre (aka, straight woman with multiple male partners, yay!) and wow, this is just - like, do gay people exist in this world? Do ace people? Polyamory is briefly mentioned but not actually engaged with at all, so functionally, nah. Because I just cannot imagine a world where queer people exist and these men are making the life choices they are making about committed relationships to other men, and having sex with the same woman in a committed relationship, and then like, just not talking about the fact that you are in a queer poly relationship. It's just, like, the most hetero and monogamous take possible on a very queer, very poly relationship. It's almost as if it's a het romance where the dude just happens to have three bodies? It's so fucking weird to see a book go so far out of its way to frame this as hetero brothers-in-arms who love each other? Like, the intense military friendship that is actually a romance in disguise is literally a gay cliche - this one is ours, straight people.

Also, massive trigger warnings for eating disorders shit (the woman is a trainer and runs a youtube channel where she makes "health food" recipes, constantly breaks food into good or bad categories, calorie counting, talks in detail about the weight loss plans of her clients, none of it needed) and also, uh, military kink? using the American invasion of Afghanistan as a neutral-to-justified backdrop for a personal vendetta? (Dudes, is it gay to avenge the death of your boyfriend's brother under the cover of a legitimate Marine mission while you lie to him and keep him out of the loop, safe at home with your other shared boyfriend and girlfriend?) This was a compellingly written novel full of sympathetic depictions of people who I would not ever want to have a drink with!

Thrawn: Treason - Timothy Zahn - Getting fun and brisk with this one! 55% in. Hunting Towards Heartstill - Blackkat - Star Wars Clone Wars Cartoon au - marriage of convenience, fake marriage, Mace Windu/Cody - Slowing down because we're crash landed on an abandoned Sith planet and I'm watching Mace be annoyed at Anakin and, well, he's very annoying! I'm going to try and buckle down and get some more under my belt so that I can actually just get past this part. I got stuck here last time too.

Like fundamentally SU is about:

a kid navigating the world after the death of his mother & coping with it with some sci-fi elements throwing it for the aesthetics, that it’s all. It’s a cartoon, for kids who relate to Steven’s experience, to show that grief is messy, getting better is messy, life in general is messy, & that people are also, in fact, messy like everything else, Nobody in the show is show as perfect, And most importantly that’s it’s fine that this happens & that you can get better. Which is very important message to teach kids when you want them to learn empathy, SU is a lesson in empathy and learning to feel emotions. All very important things you need to teach kids if you want healthy adults.

The plot of Steven Universe was never meant to be the important part of the series, the characters were, plot is driven by the characters’ relationships with each other. Of course the outcome was rushed and flawed, you are banking on a literal kid to try & dismantle an alien empire singlehandly & amount of ruthless of an army, that’s literally impossible. There would be no way Steven could do any of that, he just got lucky because the diamonds did love Pink & were willing to try work towards change. Anything else changed, Steven would be screwed, remember what the diamonds did to the last rebellion. Steven instead decides to try play on what power he might have in this over wise pretty powerless situation which happens to be his empathy & willingness to see good, like any kid would. Lucky enough it works, yay. For the time being, the diamonds promised to Steven work on being better & make him, the kid accountable for their actions, the grown adults in the situation & are promising to work more on self-reflecting.

SU future is all about the very real trauma, kids who were put in similar situations that Steven was put in and it’s okay to feel like that, and pushes for kids who might feel like Steven to please, rightfully so, to seek treatment. In the end of the day, the gems & everyone else stood by Steven even at his worse because they all loved him & appreciate everything he’s done for them. This is again a kids cartoon this isn’t Bojack Horseman where you can go talk about the complexities & the depressing parts you can’t show in a kids cartoon. People really don’t like want to make depressing soul-crushing things for kids because kids don’t know how to handle it, not surprisingly. They want to teach the simple things of feeling emotions is good & everyone has emotions too & you need to figure out how to deal with it.

In a seriousness, if you want to argue the further systematic issues be my guest but I hope you hope every other evil cartoon kingdom to same standards you hold the diamonds too, better yet I want to debate the pro-imperialism when to Disney Princesses, yes I want to see if you are pro-Elsa ruling over a kingdom that she tried to kill with an everlasting winter. Kids aren’t thinking of these thing they think of kingdom & kings, they want to look cool & do cool stuff. They just want to be a knight & have cool fights. They aren’t thinking of the moral & ethical systematic issues of their imaginary play. They just play.

Rating: Obviously a 10! Invincible's been renewed for 2 more seasons and I can't wait! This is one of the best shows I've ever seen and I've seen pretty much every American cartoon that has existed since 1990. Fantastic, but I'll let my review above speak to my thoughts.

Bonus: I’m gay and bloody Hannah is also hot. Small tip: Ignore the creepy/gross Hannah and Cas set up the writers are trying to do. They are siblings.

12x09 Let me hug Cas! He’s sad over his family being gone. Also, Mary, I love you but I don’t forgive anybody for being mean to Cas. All the Winchesters are on thin fucking ice with me.

13x04 Cas annoying a cosmic entity. Fun fact! I dislike the trenchcoat cause it looked so stiff and the color was off idk didn’t look great but Cas looked beautiful when he looks up at the sun! Ah!

Thinking about how when Doonesbury, which had been born as a college newspaper cartoon against the Vietnam War, treated Iraq I/Desert Storm it was kind of presented as a Boomer reconnection with a yay-U.S. Military ethic, B.D.-as-troop treated more seriously than when he got lost and had to be rescued by Vietcong Phred*, and then for Iraq II/the sandbox wars it just did an Adventures in Military Trauma Care plotline three! times!

* who was maybe related to the boat people refugee orphan who later got reused as the self-insert character's Younger Asian Girlfriend In The 90s After Your First Wife part of the Boomer Epic

Favoritism

A rough story / This one’s a little old

Part 1

Mark and Jack are Felix’s hybrids, but Felix has a tendancy to overlook Mark’s trauma in favor of Jack.

" . . . Felix? Can I . . . Can I have a cookie too?" Mark asked shyly as he watched his owner putting groceries away. The hybrid stared at his fidgeting fingers as he waited on Felix's reply.

"Hmm? A cookie? Yeah sure, there's some in the cabinet over there," he pointed to the tall pantry next to the wall.

Beaming Mark quickly thanked him and scurried over to grab the treat. There were a couple different kinds, but Mark knew which one he wanted. Felix has just recently started buying a type of sugar cookie Mark had only seen in stores. They looked and smelled so good with their thick layer of colored frosting and perfectly shaped cookie. A box of the cookies with pink frosting and red sprinkles sat unopened in the cabinet. Mark grabbed the box and ran a claw through the sticker keeping it closed. He grabbed one and returned the box before making his way to the living room where Jack was.

A cartoon was on the tv, one Mark wasn't familiar with. He munched on his cookie, eyes brightening as it tasted just as good as it looked, and settled down next to Jack who was still eating his cookie. They watched in silence until Jack happened to glance at Mark and the treat he was eating.

"Oh! Felix let you have one of his cookies? What did you do to get him to let you have it?"

Mark startled and as he processed Jack's words, he tried to push down the anxiety that was building in his stomach, "I - I just asked if I could have a cookie. He didn't say anywhere was off limits." Mark didn't know Felix had a cookie preference even though he'd lived here longer than Jack.

"Hm, maybe he doesn't really care anymore," Jack thought aloud. He noticed the queasy look on Mark's face and was quick to comfort him, "It's just one cookie! I'm sure he won't mind. Forget I said anything, let's keep watching the show."

Still feeling unsettled, Mark quickly ate the rest of his treat, hardly tasting it in an effort to not be caught with something that could get him in trouble. After a few minutes of no one yelling his name, Mark relaxed and he and Jack snuggled into a blanket.

He'd nearly forgotten about the whole thing as the show ended and Jack suggested they play. Eager, Mark happily followed Jack upstairs to his room. Jack had more toys to play with and rarely let Mark come in. Something about respecting Jack's boundaries because his old home didn't. As usual Mark and Jack played with stuffed animals and built sets from Legos. They were having fun until Mark crawled under Jack's bed to grab a stray Lego and strayed too close to some of Jack's most important things, memories from his first family. Jack yelled at Mark to leave, suddenly feeling too exposed with someone else in his space. In his rush to get out from under the bed, Mark scratched his back against the metal bed frame. He didn't have time to inspect it as Jack chased him out of his room and slammed the door in his face.

Mark's eyes burned as he stared at the closed door for a moment before hurrying to his room. Felix had told him not to take it personally when Jack got too crowded, but Mark hated the familiar sting of rejection. It was a harsh reminder how hard he had to work, how much of himself he had to hide, for anyone to like him. One mistake could be the end of a relationship or even a home.

In his room, Mark finally allowed a small sob to escape him. He went to his bathroom, wiping his eyes on his sleeves as he went. He wanted to check the scratch that stung on his back and distract himself from how bad he felt. All of his insecurities were so neatly packaged in him until one small thing brought them all to the surface. It was so hard to hide it from Felix and Jack. He just knew if they found out about how much he cried over stupid things Felix would send him back to the shelter.

The mirror revealed a long scratch down his spine where in a few spots, blood beaded to the surface. The initial pain was gone, leaving an ache that Mark could ignore.

Mark sniffled and pulled his shirt back down, avoiding looking at his face in his reflection. He blew his nose and forced himself to stop crying though the occasional hiccup or sniffle would escape. What should he do now? He didn't want to face anyone after crying, embarrassed and upset still. A yawn cut off any other idea he would've had. A nap sounded good right about then. Mark crawled into his bed, burrowing under the covers and rubbing his legs together to get warm quickly. The sun still shone through his window, but under the blanket it was a cozy glow that made Mark smile tiredly. He fell asleep soon after despite the heavy feeling resting in the pit of his stomach.

"Mark. It's time to wake up buddy," a voice whispered in Mark's ear and something warm rested on his shoulder.

His ear twitched in response. Blinking slowly, Mark turned over on his back to see who was there. He was greeted by Felix smiling at him and the warmth on his shoulder moving to his hair to smooth down the out of place strands.

"Rise and shine. It's dinnertime. Come on downstairs before the food gets cold," Felix said softly as he gave Mark's ears a few more rubs.

"'M kay," Mark murmured tiredly, sitting up and noting how the formerly bright sunlight was now an orangey hue as the sun began to set. He stared out of the window before Felix suddenly grabbed him under his arms and pulled him out of bed. Felix snickered as Mark squawked in surprise. As Mark regained his balance though, he smiled too and straightened his legs to catch him on the floor. Felix let him go as he got his footing, moving a hand to his back to guide him to the door, thankfully missing the stinging scratch on his spine.

The smell of warm food wafted in Mark's nose and he felt his mouth water. The dinner table was already set with food on three plates. Jack was already sitting there, fiddling with the edge of a napkin. He brightened as he saw Mark and Felix come downstairs.

"Yay! We can eat now right?" Jack asked excitedly, tail swishing like he was an Inu.

Felix laughed again as he and Mark took their seats, "Yes Jack. Go ahead."

Mark listened to Jack and Felix talk all through dinner, yawning while he ate. He was so tempted to lay his head down and go back to sleep, but Felix had already made a rule about sleeping at the table. As in, they shouldn't. The heavy feeling in his stomach was gone now and with it so was the urge to cry. Feeling light had Mark smiling softly all through the meal.

"Alright you two, listen up," Felix said suddenly as they were all finishing, "Tomorrow I've got to go on a trip to a friend's house. He needs some help with filming for a video. I'll be gone for a couple of days so Jack I'll be taking you to Bob's house to stay and Mark, you'll be here with a house sitter."

Jack quirked his head confused, "Why are we being split up?"

"Bob couldn't take both of you and the house sitter didn't think she could handle two hybrids, so I had to do it this way. I'm sure you'll have fun at Bob's house though if that's what you're worried about Jack!" Felix laughed as he ruffled Jack's hair. Jack let out an indigent noise as he swatted Felix's hand with a snort.

"Do I know the house sitter?" Mark asked quietly.

"No, she's new. Mary and Wade were both too busy to stay here. I did make sure she was qualified to take care of hybrids though. I'm sure you won't even notice she's there."

Mark purred as Felix ran his fingers through his hair. Alright, if Felix was so confident, Mark was sure there was nothing to worry about. How bad could a new sitter be?

You’re into marvel?!?! YAY! Now I have many questions (since I’ve gathered that you have IMMACULATE taste in movies). What’s your fav mcu movie?!? Are you enjoying WandaVision? What did you think about Evan peters replacing Aaron? And, since we’re in the superhero movie bit, do you like dc? Like suicide squad, birds of prey? wonder woman or the recent ww84???

Ah! Hahaha, yeah! You’ve totally sprung me! ;-) I’ve seen everything Marvel Studios / the MCU has put out! The original X-Men trilogy + the X-Men: Evolution cartoon were really formative parts of my childhood, and the latter being cancelled after three seasons was definitely my gateway into reading comic books (I’ve been Rogue at three different dress-up parties, haha). As a result, I’ve always had a pretty huge softspot for Marvel generally, and it’s been really fun to see the way they’ve built up their studio.

Favourite MCU Movie

It’s not a movie, but I love, love, love the Jessica Jones series. I think it does such an incredible job of navigating the long tail of trauma and the way that impacts not just the individual who experienced the trauma but the people closest to them too.

But! You asked for a movie! It’s probably controversial, but I think I’d say Spiderman: Homecoming. I love a good coming of age story, and that movie just came with such a sense of joy and vulnerability, innocence and loss that it would’ve been impossible for me not to fall in love with it. I also think it has one of the universe’s more compelling villains and a really satisfying twist. I just love it.

A close second would be a three-way tie though between the first Iron Man, Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Black Panther!

Are you enjoying WandaVision?

SO. MUCH.

I’m really, really loving it actually, and if it manages to stick the landing, I think it might tie for Jessica Jones as my favourite MCU story generally. I’ve loved how different it feels, and how it really embraces not just the absurdity of the premise, but the emotional root of it for all of the characters.

I’ve talked about it a bit on here before, but my favourite types of stories are the ones I like to call ‘collateral damage’ narratives, where it’s not so much dealing with the big heroes, but the aftermath of what happens around them? It’s a big part of why I like the Spiderman: Homecoming villain so much (it being a man who’s hired to clean up the damage of the big superhero battles and turning the scraps of alien weaponry he found into an underground arms trade. I think that’s a p brilliant way to explore the ramifications of the more epic stories), and WandaVision similarly exploring the traumatic aftermath not just for Wanda, but for the people brought back by the Snap, is just - - so good!

And I like Evan Peters, but already miss Aaron Taylor-Johnson. I’ve felt robbed of his Quicksilver since AoU. :-(

Do you like DC?

I’m definitely more of a Marvel girl, but I do like some of DC’s output. I watch most of their shows on The CW and have seen a lot of the movies. I really, really didn’t like Suicide Squad and Batman vs Superman, but really enjoyed Birds of Prey and Wonder Woman and Shazam! I haven’t seen WW84 yet, but I’m hoping to check it out soon.

I like DC best for their animated shows though! I loooove the old Teen Titans cartoon, Jusice League Unlimited and Young Justice! I’m hoping to watch the Harley Quinn animated series soon too! I just need to find some time, haha.
