Year Walk Chapter Ten
...Is not done yet!
I was foolishly thinking that by this time, my story would be complete by the release of Tears of the Kingdom. However, family issues and school continue to give me challenges, but I am working on editing and revising the latest chapter. I haven't forgotten about it!
Here's some snippets that you can expect to read in the next chapter!
When Mipha gazed upwards at the statue’s eyes, something unreal sent a cold bite to her spine. A statue was built to be a memory, and in the Temple of Time, something regal and encompassing. Something unspoken passed between stone, gray eyes; Something the Zora Princess thought, and something The Hylian Goddess knew.
“Let us be without malice in our hearts, though it flows with us through these never-ending cycles.”
It felt like Mipha was already drowned in the depths of Hebra’s blizzard. Too quickly, Mipha tore her gaze away, nearly blinded by the sunlight ahead, her breaths hitched.
“Are you alright, Mipha?” Urbosa glanced around, her hand hovering over her weapon. Mipha’s tail twitched in agitation, and she clenched her fists to hide the claws that retracted.
~~~
“Are you not aware of the dangers we face if we pursue this?” Urbosa asked.
“But don’t you understand that the Calamity does not wait either?” Zelda interjected.
Mipha raised her hand. “I understand both sides. However…” The weight of the decision was choking her, and although she meant every word... “Urbosa, we need Revali. Vah Medoh needs Zelda. If we leave tonight, we can rest at nearby towns on the way.”
“Warm clothes will be provided by this evening!” Zelda jumped up, giving no time for Urbosa’s counter-argument before she was scrunching up the map. “The thickest, warmest Hylian wool can get. It will be done by tonight, and we leave before dawn breaks.”
“Thank you, Mipha.” Zelda spun around, her hand grazing across Mipha’s forearm, before she whisked away with her servants to prepare. Mipha’s cheeks warmed, but the uneasiness in her stomach prevailed.
Urbosa shook her head, footsteps echoing on stone tiles as she retired from the conversation. Muttering under her breath--whatever she had said was lost to Mipha’s newest bout of grief, hands twisting tighter and tighter as she finally left the empty meeting room.
The matter of the conversation was over with. The weight of the decision was heavy, risky and uncertain. The journey to Rito Village was underway, but a mirage of hope drifted between reality and a matter of time.
The faint taste of spicy meat-and-seafood fry lingered on her tongue, the warmth of a wooden bowl in her hands, steam rolling across her scales. She could hear a boastful laugh, but more than that--Mipha could picture Revali ruffling his feathers at Mipha’s news, her premonition and nightmare, and Revali would frown. Guarded, but their experience was shared. They knew each other, and knew of their fate at opposite ends of the world.
“I thought I was, well…It seems nothing more than a nightmare, myself. But if the both of us have experienced this “reset”, then it must be more than coincidence, hm?”
Deep breaths. Mipha clenched her fists, and slowly unraveled her claws from her palms.
The cold winds of the corridors melted away. The chills drifting among her shoulders melted away in the passing blocks of sunlight.
“Is everything alright, Your Highness?” A young servant bowed low to Mipha in the hallway, passing by with a loaded basket in one arm, and another of red ribbons. Their face was hidden by a traditional Sheikah cloth, but the polite concern was present enough.
Mipha nodded, mustering a smile. “Everything is just fine, thank you. What a beautiful uniform you have.”
The servant’s shoulders shook, head tilting to glance at the whites and blues of Royal Sheikah attire. Their long ears twitched, red earrings jingling faintly. “Thanks! My mom made it for me.”
They scurried off with a bounce in their step, hurriedly taking off to their original task, and Mipha to hers. She could inhale without a striking pain in her lungs.
Everything would be okay.
October Roundtable: Horror Game Settings We Might Survive
Gaming lets us experience a number of different worlds and settings totally inaccessible to us in real life. Sometimes those worlds are pleasant escapes. Sometimes they’re oppressive, threatening hellscapes. In this, the spookiest of months, it’s the latter that’s our focus—the gnarliest, nastiest (and also our favorite) settings and premises that we nonetheless think we can survive. For this…
Year Walk, a short and beautiful experience based on the Scandinavian tradition of Year Walking, otherwise known as Årsgång.
"In the old days man tried to catch a glimpse into the future of the strangest of ways
they locked themselves in dark rooms
not partaking of food or drink
At the stroke of midnight
they ventured out into the night
through the dark woods
where strange creatures roamed
To see if they would be wealthy
to see if they would be happy
to see if they would live
to see if they would be loved"
