Looks like you average 175 calls a day! :O

Depending on your shift length that's about 20 calls an hour, dang. I've heard 911 inbound calls are very mentally taxing, sometimes. How do you handle it?

It depends!

There’s kind of a mentality you develop doing this, which is that there is no closure. Once the line has disconnected, it’s over, you’ll never know what happens next.

It gets easier to compartmentalize. There are a good number of calls I think about a lot, but for the most part I let myself forget them.

As for the bad calls, I take breaks. My center has a policy that if you need a break, you take a break, it doesn’t matter how much the phones are ringing, if you need to step away, step away. This helps A LOT. I can go outside or to a private room and breathe, cry, talk it out, whatever I need.

If I’m being really really honest, I can compartmentalize terrible emergency calls a lot better than other difficult calls. With the emergencies, I do whatever I can to help and close the call knowing I’ve done all I can.

The calls I have trouble with are the people who call to verbally abuse us and the mental health frequent fliers, who also call to verbally abuse us in a different flavor. These suck because they’re just on the line to scream, cuss, threaten, and abuse you until you confirm there’s no emergency (and they’ll avoid letting you know if there is one to keep you on the line).

But even those? They’re fine. I might be annoyed with them, but they don’t know who I am and I don’t take the insults personally. It’s just exhausting to see a particular phone number in the queue and be like “oh boy, time to take my headset off because Jane Schizophrenia is about to call and scream as loud as she can into the microphone.” Or worse, to be answering in succession and be shocked when the scream belts out at full blast.

But again, even that? Not that bad.

There’s a LOT of talk about how awful the job can be and how not many people can do it, but honestly?? I think a lot more people could handle this job than they think.

Like bruh have you worked in an abusive retail environment for shit-tier pay and stayed calm while a 45 year old woman with a cropped haircut screams for the manager? Have you gotten into an argument with a coworker and managed to de-escalate it without mediation?

Have you successfully been in behavioral health therapy and have a good regimen of SSRIs, ADHD meds, anxiety pills, or all three (guess who) and can hold off the big emotions until you’re in a safe environment?

You’ll be fine. You can do 911.

3. Least favorite things to draw?

THIS IS GENUINELY HARD… “i don’t have one” is such a cheater answer! but as i’ve drawn more and more and gotten more out of my comfort zone, i find i don’t really dread drawing anything as much? being a professional artist is kind of nice because regardless of how you feel about what you’re drawing (not talking like morally objectionable stuff of course), you still GOTTA DRAW IT! which actually sounds horrible now that i put it that way BUT I MEAN IT IN A GOOD WAY LOL. like, i can groan and gripe about something, but at the end of the day there’s an end product that needs to be achieved and grumbling to myself isn’t gonna do me any favors.

i used to not like drawing cars, which i know is a pretty shared experience, but having gotten used to drawing cars for work or personal art i don’t mind as much anymore, and actually enjoy the challenge! i’m always looking to challenge myself, and i think that mindset has helped me a lot. i always tell my supervisors that i’ll draw anything they put in front of me LOL

4. Favorite things to draw?

TOO MANY TO LIST… so predictable of me to say this but Daffy and/or Porky are definitely up there regardless HAHA. it is very true though! they’re very forgiving to me. i can get into their minds well, and they’ve known me and my pencil enough to know what to do. we have a good relationship!! they’re always two characters i can draw with ease and feel good drawing. i will never run out of inspiration with them.

like any artist, i have a lot of Personal Artistic Philosophies, and one of my biggest is that i view my art as a conversation. i try to get into the heads of the characters i draw. at the same time, i feel like a director—telling them where to stand, what to pose, what to emote, no, this isn’t working, i need a little more from you, good, good, maybe try it like this, etc. it’s something i’ve embraced tenfold as of late, seeing as my job relies on this whole principle—getting into the minds of the characters and making them act believably, endearingly, and innocently funny. i really just like getting to draw any sort of character that i can build that “”relationship”” with, so to speak. it’s especially nice with my favorite characters or characters who are receptive to me back, so like Daffy or Porky or SpongeBob and so on.

on a LESS philosophical note though, i DO love painting as well. i really enjoy every part of the art process (and i’m not just saying that!), but i find coloring and painting and rendering particularly zen. it’s rewarding to watch the fruits of my labor come together and materialize! likewise, there’s less stress, because painting and coloring can be more ambiguous—i’m not doing thumbnails or rough layers of how i’m gonna color something, not struggling to figure out the construction or perspective of color. it’s a nice leisurely change of pace and is something i find relaxing… which is good and rare considering i’m firing on all cylinders otherwise! my mind is always going 37466372mph and so it’s nice to have something to ground it.

11. Favorite comment you’ve ever received on your work?

THIS I DO HAVE A MORE STRAIGHTFORWARD ANSWER TO HAHA.. i’m so fortunate enough to have been told many, many kind things from friends, coworkers, supervisors, followers and strangers alike. i make a point to internalize every compliment i get—acts of kindness are something i take very seriously and i’m very, very sentimental. i’ve been told many great things over the years and i am sincerely lucky for all of them.

one of the most profound, though, was Bob Clampett’s daughter, Ruth, commenting this on my tribute to The Great Piggy Bank Robbery (and yes i’m posting the screenshot because i still can’t believe it!!)

i’ve been lucky to have been told MANY nice things.. but i don’t think a single comment has ever made me bawl like a baby more than that one LOL. i still get emotional thinking about it! it reminded me of how eternally lucky i am to be doing what i am.

21. Weirdest thing you’ve ever drawn?

THERE’S QUITE A VARIETY TO CHOOSE FROM.. i have “i was on deviantArt when i was 11” syndrome so that spawned a lot of. interesting things. i truly could not narrow it down.. but i immediately thought of this one so. i don’t know what it means or who this is either

the dead poets on ice: another headcanon from hell

hey guys!! sooo @pretentious-strikes helped me come up with this idea so big big shoutout to faye ily bestie

uh yeah i had some trials and tribulations over this but it's here :)

also, when i say the poets, i'm including chet and ginny and chris in that. i need to give them a name though. i thought sapphic trio or sumn???

neil: i love this boy but he cannot skate </3 he's got so many talents and yet this is not one of them. he spends the entire time clinging to todd (who also isn't entirely sure he can skate well) and the other half quoting dramatic shakespeare scene and faking his death on the ice HAHAHAHA. can you imagine him pretending to stab himself with a dagger while quoting the end of romeo and juliet? and then he just. fake stabs himself and pretends to die on the ice while todd is like "GET UP I NEED HELP"

todd: the literal definition of "i think i'm doing it right???????" like he kinda knows what he's doing because he skated once two years ago but at the same time it's still a new feelings and he's disoriented?? the fact that neil is hanging onto him for dear life kinda makes him feel like he should know what he's doing, so he fakes it til he makes it because he doesn't have the heart to tell neil he is no safer in his hands than in the jaws of a shark. he leaves better than he was at the beginning, of course, but boy were those first ten minutes absolute hell for him (except for the neil holding onto him part. that was nice.)

meeks: not horrible, not fantastic, but secure in the knowledge that he can skate wherever he pleases without have to worry about falling over. he's just freaking zen the entire time, more of a spectator than a player in whatever chaos is occurring. he makes the occasional sarcastic comment, but spends the majority of the time focusing on his own craft (a.k.a. skating in circles around the edge of the lake). he'll help if anyone gets injured, but otherwise he's perfectly content with his own thoughts and we love it for him :)

cameron: who is a perfectionist? richard. who's good at everything on almost the first try? rich. who's fucking incredible at ice skating? CAM THE MAN RICHARDSON THAT'S WHO. when I say this man has the technique, the style, i mean he has it. he's told approximately no one and yet exactly everyone is in awe of this man's skills. and while he's not showing everyone up, he helps the others that can't seem to go two seconds without falling on their asses. moral of the story: get urself a man who can do both, aka richard cameron.

pitts: he is as tall as a tree and just as uncoordinated as one :) he's the type of person to laugh at how much he sucks rather than get frustrated about it? so every once in a while you'll hear a yell from pitts, followed by a thud, followed by the loudest, most infectious laughter you've ever heard. Like he makes everyone else nearly fall from laughing so hard. He just raises the morale like crazy but is probably also prepared with first aid training if anyone were to fall and break an ankle or something.

charlie: does not know what he's doing, but he's doing it very loudly and badly. he has a baseline skill set that includes standing upright and skating slowly on the ice, but it soon progresses into ZOOM ZOOM GOTTA KNOCK EVERYONE ON THEIR ASSES dalton. he's just zip zoppin through everyone, cackling his head off and trying to push a select few to the ground. he never once succeeds to push cameron down even though that's his main target because cameron has the balance of a flamingo and even though charlie's laughing he's internally thinking "WHY WON'T YOU JUST FALL AND VALIDATE MY CHAOS????" he leaves without having knocked over cameron, but it's fine. he knocked knox over more times than he can count.

knox: um...he's the worst out of all of them. like he is...abominable. he knocks himself and everyone around him off balance whenever he falls because he's the flailing, Not Going Down Without A Fight type of faller. he's definitely frustrated by his lack of skill, especially when Chris skates by and does a little twirl right in front of him. But he's determined to leave that place not totally helpless, but does he? no. charlie made sure he didn't. moral of the story: it could've been better if it weren't for charlie.

chris: I feel like Mrs. Noel would've been the kind of parent to put Chris in gymnastics or something when she was a kid and therefore Chris has great balance and would be a GOD at ice skating. Like, she probably do a few of the little twists and turns that lower-level figure skaters can do. She ends up getting really focused on trying to learn how to do a spin and goes off in her own little world for a bit before she realized she forgot where she was and goes back to hang out with Ginny.

chet: this man is a football player, okay? ice skating is not his thing. First of all it took a hot second to find ice skates that actually fit him, and then when he finally got on the ice he was caught completely off guard by how SLIPPERY IT IS????? so he hangs onto chris like she's a life preserver for a while until she gives him some motivational pep talk that convinces him to let go. he does the weird preschooler slide-walk thing for a while, you know where he's making the movements of walking but his feet are just sliding back and forth on the ice and he isn't getting anywhere because the coefficient of friction is basically in the negatives? but he ends up figuring it out and leaves with one-half of a new skill!!

ginny: queen has never done this before but she does NOT need anyone's help. She is so dead set on doing it all by herself and not allowing a single soul to give her help. When she falls, she dismisses all the hands held out to her and figures out how to get up by herself. Once she gets the hang of it, she allows herself to be dragged around by speed-demon Chris Noel for a bit and once or twice they fall down in a heap because Chris is skating backwards in order to hang onto ginny's hands and therefore cannot see where she's going and furthermore hits every poet like they're bowling pins. But they laugh every time they fall because it's lowkey hilarious and also they're in love <3

See, if you’re short, you’ve just got vengeful feelings and rage in your heart. I hear it’s because we’re closer to hell. I like to spite people that are taller than me when there’s something that I can’t reach, I’ll climb and jump on pretty much whatever I can and get what I want and then turn my happy ass away from them like, “What?” 

I mean, there’s plenty of benefit to being short just as there’s a benefit to being tall. There are always setbacks to both things, too, of course. I think you just have to let people know when jokes, either way, make you feel insecure or upset in a way that’s not played like a joke. Like if people don’t respect you saying that you can’t stand the jokes, then they gotta go.

Buddhism, Existentialism, Dark Souls

Fromsoft's games revolve around a core idea, one that other Japanese auteurs like Hideo Kojima, Fumito Ueda, Yoko Taro also touch on: the cycle of life and death, the suffering inherent in that natural system, and the connections we can still form and the meaning we can still find within them. It's obviously rooted in Buddhist and Shintoist beliefs, as well as other East Asian philosophies that acknowledge the supremacy of nature (and natural processes), accept the impermanence and imperfection of the world, and yet (therefore?) also the beauty found therein. First, how do other forms of media try to communicate these ideas? In traditional East Asian visual arts, humans are oftentimes either ignored or viewed as very small, distant figures, entirely dwarfed by nature. Early Buddhist art avoided human depiction at all, using instead icons like wheels and lotuses/cherries to communicate ideas of the cyclic nature of the world and the impermanence of the moment (it's argued that human depictions of religious figures only came into prominence after the whole Greco-Bactrian thing where Greeks set up shop in what is now Afghanistan/Pakistan and started carving gods-as-people, and I mean, you gotta compete with that seductive reification of divinity). Shintoist poetry is brief, fragile, incomplete, often summoning a brief moment of nature ("this dewdrop world / is a dewdrop world / and yet, and yet--"). Kurosawa's deep love of rain and bamboo, Ozu's pillow shots of landscapes and rooms devoid of people. All of these use tools unique to their respective mediums to manifest a sensation or emotion into the audience: Ozu focusing on an empty street for 10+ seconds wouldn't be possible in painting or sculpture; architecture's capacity towards grandness and sense of proportion to a person inside it can't be communicated through photographs. Think about the tools unique to video games, now. Think of all the ways you interact with a game: user interface, input controls, gameplay loops, level design, etc, and how those connect to create a totality of experience. All of these drastically affect the interplay between audience and art; think of if a Jeff Koons balloon animal sculpture were installed in some small garage versus a giant New International-style skyscraper lobby. (Imagine if Dark Souls was presented as a visual novel or whatever genre Undertale is.) Now think about how Dark Souls approaches each of those tools. User interface and item management is one that is quite clever: you are given an item, and you have zero idea of what it is, so you find a brief safe moment and take a look at its item description. It's vague and honestly impenetrable, with a little bit of equally-impenetrable lore on it. You only have one so far, so you're afraid to use it, but you have the feeling that not only could it be useful, but perhaps even necessary for some encounter. You see that you can carry up to 99 (and store 600) of them, so maybe there'll be more later? You know that you've picked up stuff that you thought might be one-off and found more later, or a merchant who sells it. Fuck it, might as well try it out - after all, this user interface is almost begging you to think about the lore meanings, the possible item use, and exploring for more of them, or how/where you could best use it. It's designed so that you acknowledge the rarity of it, but also are assured to not to worry too much about it and just try it out for whatever benefit you can get in this dangerous world. What's the worst thing that happens - you die and waste it? You've lost thousands of souls (the precious in-game currency) before, what's one lightning paper or green blossom whatever? You know this game is famously difficult; "It's like Dark Souls" is industry shorthand for "It's a fucking hard game" at this point. Might as well try something new in this brief cycle you have before the next inevitable death. That leads me to the next tool: the corpse-running / death mechanic. You'll die a lot, sure, but then you'll learn more, have the opportunity to think about what you might be doing wrong or not seeing, maybe even find a shortcut or trick or use a different item this time to make it easier. It's another ostensible punishment that's actually an opportunity for you to get better at the game, and to think about maybe using that one item for a boost or trying out a different weapon, but also it starts teaching you something very important to the series plot and themes: it's okay to die - natural, even. A part of life. It's not a waste any more than anything else in life is a waste - the only waste is if you don't learn from it, appreciate it, bask in the purifying fire of failure to find yourself in something close to Zen gameflow. Even then, it's not the game disrespecting your time; I would say that it's the player disrespecting their own experiences, discarding any outcome other than an easy victory as a waste, as pointless, as if progress is the only marker of a life well lived. Resisting death, panicking, generally facing it in an undignified manner... all of these are counter-productive. To do so is to miss the philosophy of why there isn't an instant boss restart button! The brief little life as you scurry to your undistinguished death is, perhaps, the point. I mean this in a game sense, too. If you are deeply reluctant and fearful of death, you won't have as much success exploring dangerous and unfamiliar areas. Once you accept that you might lose some paltry number of souls in exchange for new items, new shortcuts, new areas... the game becomes less of a hostile slog and more of this world that you want to explore and understand. Yes, there'll be some suffering; that's to be expected. But there's still rewards you can find, NPCs you can ogle, vistas you can enjoy. Kind of a blunt metaphor, huh? That leads to the level design. By that I mean not only shortcuts and verticality/horizonality, which are ingenious from a design perspective, but in how the levels evoke two major things: one is the lived-in nature of the world; the other is how small you are in comparison to it. Cathedrals are prominently featured throughout the games. Historically they were specifically designed to make laypersons feel small in the presence of divinity, to make their eyes look upward, and to contemplate the sheer power (physical and social) necessary to create these things. Think of how small you are, then, that there are even greater powers in nature that can make these monuments to humanity fall. As for the lived-in aspect, think of how strange the items you find are, how fragmentary their lore, and yet how they start to fit together, even from their placement in the world. (Why is a Choir investigator-assassin hiding out in the School of Mensis? Why does he drop sedatives?) There's this giant world taking place around you and you're so unimportant that no one really bothers to tell you anything more than vague prophecies and allusions. Anyone who points you somewhere concrete sees you as the pawn you are; you're also literally smaller than many other NPCs (Non-Player Characters) to illustrate this point. The NPCs are yet another way that the game acutely communicates its existential ideas to you. Everyone in the Dark Souls world is cursed to not die, but rather turn Hollow – that is, to lose their minds in lieu of death. The only way to fight against this curse is to commit to a purpose and use that willpower to stave off insanity. This is strongly absurdist in nature, as a cursed undead either completes their goal and then, newly purposeless, goes insane, or the goal is unfulfillable, and the goal-seeker is doomed to an eternity of Sisyphean torment. Some NPCs appear broken under this will, crestfallen or twisted or gleeful upon recognizing the sheer injustice of their burden; some soldier bravely on; some offer unconditional kindness; some perform a mixture of all three. There are startlingly few characters in this game, each almost hidden by the landscapes, and each clearly dwarfed – both literally by the environments they are lost in, and by the staggering difficulty of the tasks they took up. It’s almost easy to attack all the NPCs you come across, as you’re conditioned to be fearful of any other entity you encounter; many players kill a certain peaceful demonic entity because they’ve slain so many similar-looking monsters defending her. It’s easy to miss these connections, and the game makes no effort to protect them. It’s the hedgehog’s dilemma: can you let down your guard towards someone who very well may hurt you, in a world that has done nothing but hurt you? Will others do the same? The multiplayer component of this game adds a corollary to this social experiment: there will, inevitably, be those who seek to invade and destroy you, those who will defend and avenge you, those who will help you, and those who will dabble in all three. You see every day in real life: the wounded lashing out in pain, the happy few just trying to help others along the way, the people who want to create some sense of justice in an indifferent universe. Oftentimes, one human will try out all three roles in their life. Why do we do this? Perhaps it’s how we work through the cosmic injustice of our existence, in a form of primitive dialogue that we need to act out. The human condition, after all, is reconciling oneself with the fact that we, and everyone we know, are fated to someday die. That's where the plot intersects with the gameplay and themes to make the whole greater than the sum of its parts. The directive you’re given at the beginning of the game is to extend the Age of Fire, the era you are currently living in; you are told that this is because with Fire there’s light, and time, and the creative spark of divinity on high. However, it turns out that unnaturally prolonging the Age of Fire is actually pretty bad, and results in all sorts of upheaval and foul consequences (including, possibly, the undead curse itself, unless you believe a certain scholar in DS2…). We learn as we venture through this game and interface with its mechanics that death must be a part of life and dark must accompany light. We also know that something can arise out of nothing (as we know there was a “time” before the Age of Fire; think pre-Big Bang), so it turns out that even if you don’t extend the Age of Fire, the larger cycle of death and rebirth perhaps never ends. In any case: fighting against this inevitability, fighting against the possibility of pain and loss caused the Gwyn, the Lord of Fire and Light, to ultimately sacrifice and thus lose everything he defended in tragic irony; similarly, trying too hard to lean into the turn caused Oolacile/New Londo/Farron Keep to be lost in the Dark forever. By dying over and over in-game, by investigating the subtle hints of lore found in the items and the sparse dialogue, and by witnessing the sad existence of these once-great powers of Fire that have long-since shriveled up under the infinite and inescapable wheel of nature, you begin to internalize the themes these games try, through all the tools at their disposal, to make you feel. You can live, however briefly, and value it, but also learn to let it go. You can love nature and respect its impersonal processes, understand that ultimately it will reclaim us, and find some comfort that the end isn't necessarily the end. There will be suffering, but there will be moments of total (if brief) triumph. There will be moments of tenderness with NPCs that can only be generated by a video game world where life is immensely fragile and nothing but the curse of insanity permanent. Will you allow yourself to try and help them, knowing how difficult and obtuse it will be, and how little it might seem to matter? Will you extend the Age of Fire to uphold the lie, because this Age is the only thing you and the rest of the world has ever known? Will you be brave – or perhaps, human – enough to reach out to others in this brief moment before the end of the world, and when the time comes, to let the Age of Fire fade? Can you live, and perhaps just as importantly, die with dignity? The totality of the experience gets the player to directly feel these themes in a way that can't be done in other media. By showing - through the death mechanic, NPC quests that can permanently be failed or missed, unforgiving and vast levels with tons of secrets and shortcuts, obscure item descriptions and the resultant need for exploration and player-driven introspection and experimentation, and not by telling through cutscenes, everything works together to evoke a mood that the player directly feels like they're helping create. The sheer unity - the, ahem, ludonarrative assonance - of the design is beautiful to consider on an intellectual level but also satisfying on an interactive, practical level. You have fun not despite these things, any of which alone may be disheartening, but because together they're so thematically consistent. Taken by itself the corpse run mechanic might be considered unnecessary or anti-fun, but when placed among the larger picture it not only makes sense but makes the player consider that there might be something they're missing, that there may be more to explore elsewhere or some item that will help, because the game is so mysterious and rewards exploration and experimentation so much. This is in addition to how much it reinforces the themes of the game! I could expand on about how such well-executed unity of purpose and audience-medium interplay makes it high art, like, true fucking Michaelangelo's David type shit, but I don't want to get swept up in the hype, so I'll leave you with a classic Dark Souls quote: "therefore try tongue but hole"

Rottmnt guys teaching their friend or s/o how to fight?

A/N: you got it anon~ had a lot of fun with this one since it gave me an excuse to look up stuff on ninjutsu. there is an alternate version of this in a headcannon style, but i ditched it in my drafts and went with these scenarios instead

Leo:

“Come on, you’re moving about as fast as my grandma.”

You huff, bringing your leg back down under from the high kick you just attempted and finding the bokken - a wooden training sword - in your hands hard to hold onto.

“You don’t have one Leo.”

Leonardo chuckled, weaving past another swing of the bokken you sent his way.

You barely manage to snake by one he threw at you in response. The bokken tip breezing by your nose and forcing you to widen the berth between the two of you.

“I mean, I had to have had a grandma turtle- I think.“  

You roll your eyes and take a defensive stance, trying again to look for an opening- 

Leo taunts you again, “You gonna stand there all day or-”

You sweep a leg at the back of one of his, nudging his knee out. He makes a startled squeak and you crash your bokken against his, smirking past the swords.

“Keep it up and I might best you.”

Leonardo smirks too and pushes back, “We’ll see about that.”

He breaks out of your cage and you’re harried to block his swings. The clatter of wood irritable with each meeting of the bokkens. You can see it now; the set concentration in his sharpened eyes as he let his focus be absorbed completely by the motions he knew on a very intimate level. You keep blocking but you know there’s gonna be some give to you if this continues the way it is, so, you do what you think he might expect least. 

You duck down on one of his swings and shoot your bokken up, catching his chin at edge point.

A smile breaks across your face and you guffaw.

“Got ya!”

Leonardo smiles back, slinging the bokken over his shoulder.

“And like that, the student becomes the teacher~ I think some celebratory skating is in order.”

You prop the bokken back with the rest of its set - Leo unceremoniously tosses his somewhere near the rack - and grab your skateboard and bookbag where you’d piled them on the floor a couple hours ago.

“Definitely.”

Donatello:

In lieu of bo staff training, you were doing taijutsu katas today and they weren’t very easy.

“Shit.” you grumble, your stamina was picked away at with how stretched out this session was proving to be.

Donatello still looked like stone in that regard, but he was beginning to chip. Breathing not nearly as heavy as you were, but enough to show he needed a break as well. All the more reason for you to try to get this over with already- preferably by winning. Most days you weren’t able to get an inch on him, but recently, the tides have changed and you were improving in skill. 

It showed with how long you were able to avoid getting felled during this spar, and that was a real accomplishment because Donnie was something of a master at empty hand combat.

You hold your hands close toward you, making them voluntary fists. Donnie kept his in this half grappling pose, shoulder blades knitted together, and there was an unwavering glint to his eye. Both of you were poised to strike, but you were trying to make sure you knew exactly what plan of action you had next.

Problem was, could Donnie catch onto your thought process?

Could he detect the little twitch under your skin and predict your next move, or assume maybe it was just from exhaustion?

You cant’t worry so much in a real fight- and it’s not like you have in the past, but with how serious you are about fighting and how the turtles are with training you, you can’t help it.

You softly puff through your nose.

Stop thinking and bring yourself back to what you’re doing.

You want to win for once.

You dart forward and there’s this flurry of movement as you and Donnie seek to counter each other before a blow can be landed. You can feel your heartbeat thumping in your fingertips and the back of your throat, and every bit muscle you’re moving. As Donnie launches a hard strike toward your midsection, you skirt around "Heck yeah- I have a few new high scores I wanna set." you grab your shirt and throw it on over your sports bra as you follow Raph to the other side of the lair, doing your best to creep by his brothers.on light feet and land right behind the back of his shell. You shoot an arm forward and

you tag him.

“H-ha.” you pant, shocked as your face lights up.

You did it.

Donatello cranes his head to look back at you, quirking a thick brow. He cracks a smile and nods.

“Nice one.”

“Heh, thanks teach.” you remove your offending hand and loosen up your tense body now that you could move around freely.

You crack the crick in your back that you’ve been waiting to get to for the past hour.

“Can we break for those pancakes you promised me now? I haven’t even had breakfast cause you wanted to train so fuckin’ early.” you’re also really sweaty and want a hot bath, but food could definitely come first and since you found out that Donatello had this secret recipe for pancakes, you were dying to try them.

It wasn’t like he was the family cook after all, and Mikey said they were awesome.

Donatello stretches his lanky limbs and nods.

“Sure, sure.” he flaps his hand around with his eyes closed, then cracks one open and smiles slow at you, “You’ve earned it.”

You hook arms with him and point a finger toward the door. He snorts on a giggle as you march the pair of you out.

“To the kitchen!”

Mikey:

Today was a spiritual training day.

But you’ll be honest, focus wasn’t on your side and you weren’t able to settle into meditation. It wasn’t typically anyway, and while Mikey went easy on you with everything during training no matter what, you didn’t want to trouble him. It’s borderline painful as you shift for the fifteenth time to scratch a phantom itch on your nose bridge and you inwardly huff at yourself. You wonder if he was annoyed as you were.

“You okay?”

You jump and look at Mikey who’s broken meditation form, hands clasping onto his padded knees and eyes on you.

“Uh, well,” you verbally stagger and loosen up too. You weren’t even sure how much longer you could have sat here, eyes closed and body still. There was just too much going on inside.

“Can’t concentrate?”

You blow out air, “Nope. I don’t get it- some days I can and others I just,” you grip the skirt of your baggy shirt, “it’s like there’s turmoil inside or something.” you say a little quieter.

Mikey hums and takes your hand, rubbing the center of your palm with his thumb.

Mikey lets go of your hand to clasp his together, thumbs aiming straight ahead, and you mimic the pose. He breathes in and so do you.

“You just need to slow down and go with the flow.”

You try to, letting the mess of thought streaming through the highway of your backed up mind come into focus. You give each inkling a chance to come into definition and you’re able to see what bothers you. And it hurts, recalling some of the memories that putter by and the worries, and doubts and sometimes self deprecating feelings but-

you feel yourself detach.

You find peace among the internal chaos, a blip of light, hopeful and warm.

You breathe and feel free of all species of tension and hyper strung wires life used to hold you down.

Raph:

You raise your fists, keeping them close to your chest.

Raph is standing, ready for any tackle or run you might launch at him.

Aside from building more on the integrity of your body, you’ve learned a lot about chokes, throws and defensive katas from Raph. They were the techniques of his focus and, while you were still knew at the things you’ve learned from the turtles, in no way did you see yourself as still the beginner you started out as however many months ago. You’ve grown and with each spar, and morning kata, you felt yourself growing even more. But, that wouldn’t allow you to be cocky. You still needed to remember timing, concentration and what you had over your enemy.

While you couldn’t block many blows from Raph and weren’t as strong as him, you’re much more fleet.

You take a run at Raph, dodging the heavy arm that gets slung at you, and pivot on a foot as you get to his side.

You grab the beefy arm that was aiming for you and strike his elbow, bending the limb back as it goes limp for a moment. Then you kick out one of his legs, holding his arm as it buckles and he lands on his knee with a loud thud that rack through the floorboards and reverberated through your gums.

Raph chuckles and bears a snaggletooth grin. You release him feeling flush but pleasantly successful.

“You’re gettin' good lil buddy. Told ya you would.”

You offer Raph a hand and shrug off his compliment.

“I’m learning from the best of the best.”

A husky chuckle rings through Raph’s barrel chest as he stands and gently claps a mammoth hand on your back.

“I don’t think we’re that good yet.”

You softly hit the inside of his thick wrist with the back of your hand.

“Certainly better than an amateur like me- otherwise you wouldn’t be my teachers, now would you?”

“Eh, maybe. But you’re probably past the Kyu grade by now if we’re measurin’ your skill.” he winks and then hunches down some with this mischievous look.

“Wanna hit the arcade before my bros hog all the good games?”

"Heck yeah- I have a few new high scores I wanna set." you grab your shirt and throw it on over your sports bra as you follow Raph to the other side of the lair, doing your best to creep by his brothers unseen.

Mindfulness Practices and Self-Care Routines (aka: how I’m learning to chill the fuck out)

I’m not usually too keen on buzzwords.  Probably because I’ve never been one to go along with the mainstream’s idea of what the cool thing to do is.  And I certainly believe that “mindfulness” is a buzzword, along with the now-cliche term “self-care.” These are popular partially because society says they should be: they’re a trendy thing to be into, a fashionable thing to discuss.  It’s fun for people to spout on about how “zen” and “present” they are. And there are ways to be mindful and practice self-care that are more trendy and more fashionable than others (I’m picturing instagrammable stuff like meditation altars and bath bomb aesthetics and facemasks and candles etc etc etc).  But, I that I think mindfulness and self-care actually important. I guess what I’m saying is that I don’t necessarily think it’s great to follow the masses, but that this time, the masses have it right. Being in tune with your mind and putting yourself and your needs first sometimes? Never a bad thing.

Maybe it’s the mental illness that impacts basically every aspect of my life, but I’m really into psychology and the brain/the mind and biochemistry (actually I was into it all long before my foray into mental illness…I do recall drawing blobs on papers to randomly ask people what they looked like in my own makeshift Rorschach test as a child).  And my point in saying that is to explain how you can’t research this stuff without stumbling into the realm of mindfulness and self-care. You can’t follow psych accounts or inspirational quote accounts on IG without coming across information about them. No matter what you’re into, actually, I’m certain you’ve already heard about them. So yeah. Growth in this trend.  I think by now you catch my drift (I definitely didn’t need to beat it to death, but alas I have).

I’ve been in therapy for like, nine months now, and a huge portion of what I’ve learned so far is in regards to mindfulness.  I’ve literally gotta slow down, name my emotions, and feel them without letting them control me. On a related note, apparently I have a tendency to use adjectives and be very descriptive in terms of emotions, and apparently doing the alternative to that is something I should try to implement.

A great deal of being mindful has to do with anxiety relief.  For me, at least. Like remembering that I can think myself out of a panicked frenzy instead of running head-first into one.  Or actually using one of my many anxiety-reducing apps downloaded to my phone. Or even just being honest about why I’m anxious and putting words to it so I can really internalize the fact that I have power over it, I’m in control of my thoughts and attitudes and therefore my emotions.

Meditation is genuinely hella useful.  It helps people navigate through the stressful periods of their lives and manage things that are in-the-moment anxiety-producing.  As in, being in the present moment and consciously breathing can interrupt the fight-or-flight response (“shut the fuck up, amygdala!”), not to mention steady a person’s racing heart.  Meditating frequently, practicing it as a skill, can help this happen naturally. Mindfulness can improve focus by helping to quiet external bullshit and extraneous thoughts, allowing a person to be centered on one specific thing at a time and to enjoy their lives right here and now no matter what.  It therefore follows to say that it combats the rumination of negative thoughts that plague so many people with and without mental health issues.

I’m a testament to this.  It’s been brought to my attention (quite a few times) that when I get worked up about something or when I allow my racing thoughts to take over while I desperately try to get every last word out of my mouth before they evaporate into thin air and leave me to distractedly try to remember them…I forget to breathe.  I just don’t inhale and exhale like humans are supposed to. It’s obviously rather problematic. But I’ve been working on it for a few months now. Maybe three? When I’m at work and my anxiety and heart rate are rising because I’m feeling feelings too intensely while attempting to do my damn job, I consciously tell myself to breathe, in and out.  When I’m driving and getting irritable because some moron in front of me is going too goddamn fucking slow for literally no reason, I steady my breathing and focus on the intake and release of air from my lungs. Even when I’m sitting here writing, just doing my own thing, and it occurs to me that I should bring my attention to my breath, I do so. And the resulting changes have been small but still noticeable: my heart rate is overall more controlled, I’m able to keep it together at annoyances or stressors at least slightly better, and I feel proud of myself for attempting to do my very best for myself.

As for self-care, I’ve tried the bubble bath with candles, facemask, lavender-infused type.  And my own personal spa days are definitely enjoyable and rejuvenating. But I’ve come to understand that taking care of my mind and body involves more than just those types of activities.  Sometimes it involves sitting down and writing, sometimes it involves stretching or moving my body. I guess it’s doing whatever fills my cup and reenergizes me so I can keep trying to live my best life.

I want to continue learning and practicing and improving.  I plan on doing so by continuing to read up on it all, analyzing and absorbing the information to the best of my ability, and actually putting what I learn into practice and incorporating it into my daily life.  I want to start setting a timer and just sitting with my thoughts. Maybe like, five minutes in the morning and ten at night. I also have a fuckton of guided meditations, so I need to start utilizing them. Oh, and walking meditations.  So I can get my energy out and enjoy some physical activity while simultaneously centering myself and attracting good thoughts.

I have a solid plan.  I’m excited to get on with it, and to see where it takes me.

Oswald finds himself enjoying his time in his temporary home away from home. But he starts to miss his own home just a little bit too much. When his seperation anxiety interferes with his sleep, Softwald helps his guest ease his tired mind.

The rest of the day consisted of various relaxing activities. First, Softwald guided Oswald through a beginner's yoga lesson, followed by a leisurely walk through the nearby town to take in the Wishlandian sights. They arrived home in time for tea. Today's offering was green tea with sushi and salad, with melon-flavored rice cakes for dessert. After tea, Softensia performed a reiki treatment on Oswald, and then the three of them spent the afternoon casually chatting in the living room as the fluffy children quietly played about.

Before bed, Oswald was invited to join the family for movie night. They'd popped in a DVD of “The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh,” (Oswald was a bit surprised to find that his “dad's” company's films were popular enough to span dimensions) and offered Oswald a blanket and a cup of chamomile tea to enjoy during the movie. A couple of the fluffy kids nuzzled up to him as if he were part of the family. It was nice and relaxing, but it was starting to make him miss Ortensia and his own kids back home.

Still, he'd promised Ortensia he wouldn't worry about them. So he tried to just let himself be present in the moment like Softwald had said earlier.

Eventually it was time to turn in for the night. Oswald crawled into his bed and shut off the lights, expecting to be able to fall asleep quite easily.

But, somehow, sleep wouldn't come. His thoughts kept drifting back to how his family was doing back home.

No, Oswald thought to himself. I gotta relax. Everything's fine back home. This mini-vacation's supposed to be about me, right?

Oswald sighed and turned on the lamp over his bed. He walked over to the bookshelf to see what it had to offer. He picked out a random book which seemed to be about Wishlandian flora and fauna. He took it back to bed and tried to read it, but he couldn't seem to absorb its contents. It was almost as if the words were bouncing off of his brain and into the thin of the air around him.

He eventually relented and took to just sitting at the edge of the bed, staring out into space in contemplation.

What seemed like an hour or so later, he heard a soft knock on the door.

“Ah, uhh...C-come in,” Oswald answered awkwardly.

Softwald quietly opened the door.

“Hey, Oswald?” he whispered. “I was up getting some glasses of water for the kids, and I saw the light on under the door, so I came back to check on you. Everything okay?”

“Heh, yeah,” Oswald replied. “Just having a little trouble falling asleep.”

“Can I help you in any way?” Softwald asked. “You really should get some sleep.”

“I dunno...” Oswald replied.

Softwald thought for a moment, then had an idea.

He went over to the oil diffuser on the dresser, and dropped a few drops of oil in. The room soon filled with an earthy, foresty scent.

“Uh...” Oswald watched inquisitively. “Whatcha doing?”

Softwald walked over to the sound machine next to the bed and turned it on, pressing one of the setting buttons. The sounds of birds singing and trees rustling filled the room.

“Would you like to try some guided visualization?” Softwald asked. “I always do this for Softensia when she can't sleep. It might help you.”

Oswald shrugged. “Can't hurt.”

Softwald scooted a chair over next to the bed and sat down. He handed Oswald the sleep mask that sat on the nightstand. Oswald put it on and Softwald shut off the light.

“Are you comfortable?” Softwald asked quietly.

Oswald nestled into a comfortable position in bed.

“Alright,” he replied. “Fire away, I guess.”

Softwald bowed his head and closed his eyes meditatively, preparing to channel his 'inner zen master.'

“Start out...by taking slow...deep...breaths...” He began whispering in that familiar 'hypnotic' manner that sent tingles through Oswald's body.

Oswald adopted the slow, yogic breathing style his mentor had taught him earlier.

“Just let my words...guide your thoughts...and relax you...”

Oswald was already beginning to feel more relaxed.

“Imagine yourself...walking along a forest path...picture the lush trees around you...gently sheltering you...with their bountiful leaves...as the sun's light...softly peaks through...bringing you...comforting warmth...”

Softwald's narration, coupled with the scent of the oil diffuser and the ambience from the sound machine, painted the image in Oswald's head perfectly. He looked around in his mind him to see a beautiful, green sanctuary of nature around him. He slowly began to walk down the path before him, as if Softwald's words were a whispering tour guide leading him along.

“As you continue...to slowly walk along...you feel...the all-encompassing peace of nature...flowing through and around you...healing you...bringing you closer to oneness with your surroundings...”

In a normal situation, Oswald would be internally snarking about all the 'new-age hooey' his soft counterpart was reciting. But right now, he was absolutely spellbound. Every sensation, from the feeling of the breeze, to the ground under his feet, felt so real.  He almost forgot he was just laying in bed.

“At the end of the path...you come across a small clearing...where a giant...sheltering tree...grows in the middle...You pause to look up...at its bountiful foliage...glistening in the sun...and around its trunk...you can see vines of beautiful flowers...elegantly cascading...”

Surely enough, in Oswald's mind, this gigantic tree was standing right before him. He looked upon it with serene awe. The real world was feeling farther and farther away by the second.

“You slowly walk over...and sit comfortably beneath the shade...of this motherly tree...and as you sit silently...calmly observing the serene natural environment around you...you begin to feel more...and more...relaxed...as the comforting embrace...of natures tranquility...envelops your entire being...and you fall...deeper...and...deeper...into...a...restful...sleep...”

At this point, Softwald's whispers began fading into the quiet atmosphere. The slightly tinny sounds of the sound machine became real and vivid. He'd forgotten the fact that he was in bed. Everything here was now completely real to Oswald as his visions eased into dreams.

Here he was, dozing off, beneath this ancient tree in this warm forest, with a serene smile on his face.

All of a sudden, he heard a familiar voice next to him.

“Hey there, honey-bunny,” the voice of his wife gently cooed.

Surely enough, Ortensia was now sitting next to him.

“Oh! Hey there, sweetie,” Oswald chimed, happy to see his beautiful wife. “Nice running into you here.”

“Mmhm~” Ortensia nodded in agreement. “So, how're things goin' with Softwald?”

“Actually,” Oswald began, “they're going pretty good. I mean, I know I seemed kind of hesitant at first, but...I've actually really been able to relax and get my mind off everything that's been bothering me. Softy's a really nice guy, too. He and his wife have been really supportive and hospitable this whole  time.”

He looked into his wife's eyes and smiled. “I'm glad you convinced me to go along with this, baby.”

“See?” she responded. “I knew this'd be good for ya!”

“Yeah,” Oswald chuckled, but then looked up wistfully into the leaves above him.

“Still, though,” he continued, “I've been missing you and the kids somethin' awful. I know you told me not to worry, but I just love you all so much. Have you guys been doin' alright?”

“We've been doin' just fine, honeybun!” Ortensia replied reassuringly. “We all miss ya back home, too, but I feel a lot better knowin' you're doing alright.”

She reached over and wrapped her arms around Oswald, giving him a tender kiss on the cheek. He blushed, and then returned a kiss on his wife's forehead.

“So,” Ortensia continued. “Why don't'cha tell me a little bit about how your stay's been so far? I'd love to hear about what kind of things you've been doin' to unwind.”

Oswald spent the rest of the day – or night, rather – telling Ortensia about the different ways Softwald had been helping him learn to relax. He clumsily demonstrated some yoga poses, which got a few good giggles out of Ortensia. He described the place Softwald took him to meditate, telling her that he'd have to see if he'd be cool with Oswald bringing Ortensia there sometime.

It was just like he was actually talking to Ortensia again, even if it was all just a dream. It definitely eased his worries, if only just for that moment.

Eventually, they both fell asleep cuddled close together underneath the tree, as the forest scenery faded into the unconscious void of deep sleep.

How Do You Approach Worldbuilding?

We’re honored to bring this roundtable conversation between three of speculative fiction’s most exciting up-and-coming authors: Emily Tesh, A.K. Larkwood, and Everina Maxwell. In it, the writers and IRL friends have a funny and insightful conversation about everything from fantasy maps (yea or nay?), writing an emerging romantic relationship (how do Tesh and Maxwell do it so well?), and worldbuilding (the struggle!).

In honor of the recent publication of Tesh’s Drowned Country (the sequel to last year’s lush, folkloric fantasy Silver in the Wood), we’re running the first part of the conversation. We’ll finish the conversation in February, in celebration of the publication of Maxwell’s first novel, a gay space opera about princes in an arranged marriage called Winter’s Orbit. (Larkwood’s The Unspoken Name, a fantasy about an orc priestess turned wizard’s assassin, hit shelves back in February.)

Now, without further ado…

A. K. LARKWOOD: Hello, I’m A. K. Larkwood, also known as Kassie, I wrote The Unspoken Name, a book about what happens when you’ve been brought up with a terrible purpose – and then, when it comes to it, you can’t go through with it. Csorwe expects to die in the Shrine of the Unspoken One, but she’s rescued by a strange wizard who says he has a new task for her – and the question is how far she’ll go to serve the person who saved her life. It’s also about loyalty, sacrifice, and the special bond between truly annoying coworkers. I have spent most of the plague year so far doing a series of increasingly recherche craft projects to procrastinate working on the sequel. Surrounded by crochet animals, painted lampshades, wholemeal loaves and small watercolors of fruit, I now have no choice but to… participate in this Q&A.

EMILY TESH: Hi! I’m Emily Tesh, and I wrote the Greenhollow Duology – Silver in the Wood, a story about what happens when the centuries-old avatar of the greenwood meets a handsome young folklore enthusiast with more curiosity than common sense, and its sequel Drowned Country, a story about being a person with no common sense who has accidentally stumbled into the role of a woodland demigod. I am not nearly as good at craft projects as Kass so my plague year procrastination has been spent replaying video games I have already played for hundreds of hours; at this rate my next book will be some sort of thinly veiled Starbound/Mass Effect/Two Point Hospital crossover in which all problems are solved by completing picross puzzles.

EVERINA MAXWELL: I haven’t done anything productive in quarantine but I’ve taken a whole lot of naps. Rounding out the SFF combo, I’m Everina Maxwell and I wrote Winter’s Orbit, a queer romantic space opera about arranged marriage, intergalactic politics, and slow healing from the past. To prevent a war, disreputable media darling Prince Kiem is ordered to marry Count Jainan of Thea, a quiet scholar grieving the loss of his previous husband. The match shouldn’t work, and the political waters are treacherous–even before Jainan is accused of murder. On with the questions!

Q: Let’s kick off with, what are we reading at the moment?

LARKWOOD: I really enjoyed Zen Cho’s The Order of the Pure Moon Reflected In Water, which is a snappy, funny, and rather touching novella about a nun who joins a group of bandits. If you’re looking for something longer, I also loved The Changeling by Victor Lavalle, which is about… a book dealer whose wife commits a terrible crime. Or is it??? I actually don’t want to tell you anything more about it because it’s such a wild ride. I picked it up and read the first page thinking ‘I’m not sure this is for me but let’s see’, and ended up eating up the whole thing in one go.

MAXWELL: My concentration has been a bit shot lately what with 2020 happening, but I’m excited to dig into Of Dragons, Feasts and Murders by Aliette de Bodard–Vietnamese mythology and murder husbands!

TESH: I have also been suffering from the pandemic of it all when it comes to reading, but I really enjoyed The Empress of Salt and Fortune by Nghi Vo – love the novella length for when you are having a hard time concentrating, and it is gorgeously written.

Q: LARKWOOD: As we know I am a nerd who loves a fantasy map, but I understand you two are map-agnostic verging on anti-map. Please explain this wrong opinion to me. 

TESH: OK, my map agnosticism has two angles:

As a reader and as a profoundly geographically confused person anyway, it is 100% likely that a fantasy map tells me nothing. We are crossing the Pointy Mountains to enter the Forest of Spiders? Fabulous, bring on the spiders. I do not care which direction they are coming from, I promise to be equally alarmed by them regardless of point of origin. I will literally never refer to a map when I am reading a book. It gives me nothing. Probably this is a personal failing.

As a writer I am suspicious of mapping, especially mapping too soon, because it can pin you down to things you are later stuck with (oh no I put a river here and now it’s in the way – or even worse, oh no I need a river and the map says I haven’t got one.) And then that prevents me from using my all-time favourite setting trick, which is ‘Coincidentally We Have Found Ourselves In A Location That Precisely Echoes Our Emotional State.’ (The spiders… are the characters’ feelings.) For example, a good chunk of my novella Drowned Country is set in Fairyland, which ended up as a painfully barren and empty landscape – because that is where the characters are, emotionally speaking, so that was the setting I needed. But I couldn’t have mapped it – I am not a detailed planner and I often don’t know what emotionally significant locations I need until I hit the relevant sequence!

Obviously the usual caveat applies to all this which is ‘you can do anything if you do it well’. Even I can acknowledge that a good fantasy map is a thing of beauty. For example, Kass, I am deeply pleased by the map from The Unspoken Name, which turns a front-of-fantasy-novel standard into a character moment – want to tell us about how you designed it? 

LARKWOOD: I’ll be honest, my intention with the world of Unspoken was to make a fantasy setting that could not be mapped. (For those who haven’t read it: the setting is composed of many worlds connected by portals to an eerie hyperspace labyrinth called the Maze.) I was feeling burnt-out on the idea of a fantasy setting as an alternate universe or RPG setting or any other kind of internally consistent simulation. I wanted to make something not just implausible but impossible, and was feeling very harassed by the idea that someone might ever try to tell me that I was wrong about alluvial plains or something, so the original concept was actively contrarian about geography. For instance, there were rivers but no seas, because they had all been poisoned and destroyed by divine warfare thousands of years ago (take that, The Water Cycle!). 

Having made this unmappable world my immediate thought was “but how do I map it, though?” In the actual book, the Maze serves the dual purpose of giving us kind of a space opera feel, and also lets me do a lot of different surreal landscapes while giving the characters the ability to zip around quite freely from one location to another. So the map in the book is a collage of different fragmentary maps of different worlds – it’s supposed to give the impression that the main character has maybe been compiling it on her travels.

MAXWELL: My editor asked me for a map three times. On her third attempt I realised I could no longer pretend I just hadn’t read that line in all her previous emails, panicked and opened PowerPoint, because Paint intimidates me and all I can do with a pencil is stab myself. Q: LARKWOOD: So Silver In The Wood/Drowned Country and Winter’s Orbit are both about a winsome fool who eventually kisses someone more sensible. I’m consistently impressed by how well the two of you can leverage an emerging relationship as the main conflict of your books (sometimes I try but I’ve always gotta put in a big snake or a haunted water feature) – what’s your approach to developing romance dynamics in your writing?

MAXWELL: I love deconstructing romance arcs. It’s a good example of something I could never get right when I started out, so I spent years trying to improve it. Different people have different bits of the writing toolkit when they get into the game (I’ve read Silver in the Wood; Emily was apparently born with the romance kit), but having to put work into something does give you a huge appreciation for what you like and an iron-clad knowledge of what you want to put on the page.

For me, it starts out very simple. You have a flawed character. Everyone else looks at them and thinks, oh, a normal person. Except another main character, who gets to know them and goes: holy shit, this thing you do is amazing and hot – which your first character doesn’t recognise, because to them it is Tuesday. This happens both ways round, and now you have pining. Then life comes at them hard (or in the case of Winter’s Orbit, a murder investigation and an irate press officer), and they both use their skills as a crowbar to crack that problem apart while the other one hands them screwdrivers and tries to remember not to stand there with their mouth open. Now you have accomplices, which is even better than pining. Then they start to trust not only in the other one’s skills, but that the other one will use those skills for the partnership—for them. Now you have a relationship built on a rock-solid foundation, and incidentally a team that everyone else looks at and decides is not worth messing with.

The draw for me is always a whole greater than the sum of its parts. Separately they have flaws and chips and a few veins of gold. Together they are brilliant.

TESH: I am so glad Ev had a smart answer because mine is just ‘and then… they kiss’ and that’s a plot, right.

LARKWOOD: you’re both right, and also witches. I didn’t even know there was going to be a romance subplot in Unspoken until like, the third draft.

Q: LARKWOOD: Both your books take place in a setting which puts interesting pressure on those characters, whether it’s the forest primeval or a bureaucratic labyrinth of space offices. For me one of the great pleasures of writing SFF is that you can shape the world however you like (you will notice that in The Unspoken Name and sequel I somehow managed to construct an entire setting around big snakes and bad ponds). How do you approach worldbuilding?

MAXWELL: There are dozens of ways to approach worldbuilding, obviously, but I think the commonality is like growing pearls: you pick a grain of truth and irritate everyone around you until it turns into something that looks shiny from far away but smells fishy close up. That metaphor got away from me. What I mean is you tend to write what you know, which is an old and hackneyed statement but says something useful about how we can get from blank pages to spaceships.

I don’t know what it’s like to live in a multi-planet space empire. But I do know, intimately, how large bureaucracies work and the multitude of ways they go wrong. I know what snow looks like through glass on a night when you’re already tired and can’t escape to bed for several more hours, which means I know something about the climate and the rhythm of the day. I know how someone sufficiently charming can avoid learning the requisition system and just walk around security controls, which means I know what that requisition and security system looks like. And that gets built out in layers: every time you add an element, you think through more of its consequences, like layering colour on a page. You can very successfully build a world by starting with mountain ranges and rain shadows, obviously. But alternately you could just start with a deep well of creative frustration at the millionth time you’ve filled out Form 34-B, and build it up from there.

Q: TESH: We have joked at various times about our ‘casts of thousands’ – a phrase I think we stole from an essay by Diana Wynne Jones, discussing her short story Carol Oneir’s Hundredth Dream, where the same tiny group of characters are the ‘actors’ in hundreds of different dream narratives. I know I reuse characters or character types from story to story – spot the Large Sad Man in everything I write – but what about you? Who are your cast-of-thousands characters? What are the advantages of reusing a character type rather than lovingly handcrafting each new character from scratch?

LARKWOOD: I guess for the same reason that it’s easier to buy a box of watercolours than to grind your own pigments from the raw earth? The way you mix and apply them is what’s interesting, unless being the guy who makes his own paints is your whole thing – a cool thing, don’t get me wrong, but not everyone needs to write Ulysses.

Anyway I freely admit to this. The antagonist of The Unspoken Name first showed up in a comic I made when I was 14 in which he was an immortal demon overlord and drug baron, which seems like a bit of an unwieldy career combination now I think about it. 

If I’m remembering correctly, Carol Oneir’s cast eventually goes on strike because of how clunkily she deploys them as stock characters – the lesson I take from this is that you can get away with dropping your immortal demon overlord in anywhere as long as you hide him well enough.

TABHoneyMoonsMX: Fun in the Sun at The Reef 28

So, last week I had the chance to escape the cold of NYC and trade it in for warm weather and the blue-green oceans of Mexico’s Riviera Maya. I headed out to Playa del Carmen located in the state of Quintana Roo within Mexico. Although I was only away for a very short trip, I had a fantastic time and would definitely go back. Of the popular travel spots in Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula, Playa del Carmen is like a hidden gem that—although a popular tourist spot—doesn’t feel like it’s overrun with tourists. Anywho, for this trip, I got to stay at The Reef 28, an all-inclusive adults only resort that’s just steps from the beach and a quick walk from a very chic shopping center and very vibrant nightlife. 

Getting to The Reef 28

First, Playa del Carmen doesn’t have its own airport. So you’ll need to fly into Cancun and arrange ground transportation. It’s a 45min to one hour drive from Cancun to The Reef 28.

Arriving at The Reef 28

When you arrive, you’re greeted with a mimosa. Now, this is a place after my own heart! What you instantly notice is that the lobby offers a very laid back vibe with swinging chairs—and more importantly there’s a lobby bar! So, whether you’ve arrived early and might have to wait for a room to become available, or you’re checking out and have a bit of time on your hands, you can kick back and relax with a drink or two...or three. ~_^

Dining & Cocktails @ The Reef 28

The Reef 28 offers three main dining options plus room service:

Venti8cho (the top pic in the collage) is their buffet style dining space for breakfast, lunch and dinner. However, you can also opt for an a la carte menu if you’re not a buffet fan.

Cachito (middle pic) is a Mexican restaurant that offers a lux re-imagining of popular Mexican dishes like chicharrón, churros and molcajete de arrachera. Personally, this was my favorite restaurant!

El Asiático (bottom pic) is an Asian fusion restaurant where you can sample Thai, Japanese, Vietnamese and Chinese cuisine.

Additionally, the rooftop bar offers a light plates menu and of course, room service has a full menu for breakfast, lunch, dinner and overnight snacking needs.

And just like there are options when it comes to dining, you also have three bars that all offer yummy cocktails. As I previously mentioned, there’s a lobby bar, a rooftop bar and a bar in the ante-room for Cachito and El Asiático which stays open the latest until 2AM.

Sleek Pools on the Roof

It wouldn’t be an all-inclusive if you didn’t have a pool. The Reef 28 has a gorgeous rooftop infinity pool with views of the beach and the surrounding city center. Thanks to the warm weather, the water is always the perfect temperature. But if you want to unwind even more, there are two whirlpools nearby. When you’re not in the water, relax on the lounge chairs, in a cabana or head over to the shade covered rooftop bar I mentioned earlier. Although I didn’t get the chance to experience this, The Reef 28 does offer rooftop parties (usually Thursday thru Saturday) complete with a DJ. So, if you can, try to come in the latter half of the week.

Get into Your Zen

If lounging by the pool or heading to the beach aren’t enough for you, The Reef 28 offers a great spa off of the lobby—Okom Spa. In addition to massage services, you can also enjoy their beauty salon and hydrotherapy which includes a sauna and steam room. But if you’re more of an “I’ve gotta sweat to relax” person, their fitness center on the rooftop level will be perfect for you.

Access to Everything

While The Reef 28 is a smaller venue for an all-inclusive resort, it’s really very centrally located if you’re someone who likes to venture out and doesn’t want to spend your entire trip inside the resort. You can head over towards Fifth Avenue which is a vibrant shopping strip with an open air mall (yes I saw H&M, Sephora and other international stores there), walk over towards the nightclub district or just enjoy locals offering their wares. If you coordinate with the concierge at the resort, you can also organize tours to ancient ruins in Tulum or take the ferry to Cozumel island, which you can clearly see from Playa del Carmen’s beaches.

Most importantly, when you stay at The Reef 28, you’re given a wristband. This band not only allows for you to freely eat and drink around the resort, but also gives you complete comped access to their sister resorts, Coco Beach and Playacar, which are their child friendly venues. Both of these resorts are a quick 10 to 15 minute ride away.
