Hal Jordan Reading List
Tumblr media
Hal Jordan is a man of many names and many legends. He was once the Green Lanterns' best and brightest. His name and legend is written into the stars. He fell, brilliantly and terribly. He rose again as the Spirit of Vengeance, the Spirit of Redemption! He returns in the end to his place among the Green Lanterns. But to truly know the man, you must read the stories.
Most important stories are bolded and my favorites are asterisked
Origin Stories
Some of these repeat, not all are necessary but I advise reading at least Emerald Dawn/Emerald Dawn II or Secret Origins or Showcase #22
Emerald Dawn (1990), first appearance of the Martin Jordan backstory
Emerald Dawn II (1991)*, Hal is trained by Sinestro for the first time
Secret Origins (Green Lantern (2005) #29-35), Geoff Johns’ version of Hal’s backstory if reading modern Hal stuff, its important
Showcase #22*, what actually started it all
Superman: Man of Steel Annual #4*, Hal meets Clark for the first time
Secret Origins (1986) #36, Hal retells his origin to a new friend (set post Action Comics (1938) #606)
One Shots
Green Lantern Secret Files (2004) #1 “Flight”, three flights in Hal Jordan’s life*
Justice League: The Darkseid War - Green Lantern #1, Hal becomes a God and gives it up*
Green Lantern 80th Anniversary, a tribute to the Green Lanterns across the ages* (Skip Geoff’s story. You’ll thank me. Four should be read after Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps #35.)
Early Days
Green Lantern (1960) #6, first appearance of Tomar-Re*
Green Lantern (1960) #7, first appearance of Sinestro*
Green Lantern (1960) #8, introduction of the Solar Director of 5780 plot*

Green Lantern (1960) #70, Hal gets a new job + first questioning of Guardians*
Green Lantern (1960) #73-74, Hal returns to Coast City and fights Sinestro and Star Sapphire* (note: there will be a panel that will make your jaw drop in how racist it is, there’s some good meat besides that panel but that panel…its bad)
Questioning and Politics
Green Lantern/Green Arrow
Green Lantern (1960) #76-#87, #89
The Flash (1959) backup stories: #217-#219, #226
Hal’s solo backups in The Flash (1959)

Green Lantern (1960) #172, Hal gets to return to Earth
Green Lantern (1960) #181, Hal quits
Green Lantern (1960) #191-192, the Predator is revealed
Green Lantern Corps (1986) (might be under Green Lantern (1960) depending on website) #220-224, Sinestro is executed (warning, this is part of Englehart glc and thus includes small references to hal/arisia, that relationship is out of character for everyone involved and I don't support it, but these issues are otherwise good)

Green Arrow (1988) #20, Hal goes and helps Ollie once again*
Secret Origins (1986) #50, Hal and Ollie make up from their fight (last story, only)

Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps #14-17, Hal and Kyle attempt to revive the Blue Lantern Corps
You can read Prism of Time and Fracture (#18-#25) but also you can chew glass. So. Soranik is evil now and Tomar-Tu killed a Yellow Lantern from Xudar named Romat-Ru. Don’t read it, it took me three days to finish those issues at a point where I was reading more than 30 issues a day.
Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps #30-31, Hal meets Parallax again, this time possessing Clark Kent*
Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps #33-36, the Earth GLs work together to save the Guardians
Famous Quotes- “Four legs on a table, four walls on a house, and four seats in a mustang gt. We’re the four corpsmen. You don’t screw with what works.” (Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps #35)
Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps #37-41, Hal is captured by Zod*
Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps #42-50: Rise of the Blackstars*
The Green Lantern (2018) #1-12, Morrison writes some very interesting Hal stories
Green Lantern: Blackstars #1-3, Hal creates a perfect world*
The Green Lantern Season Two (2020) #1-12, major stories include the multiversal Green Lanterns and Carol Jordan and Hal Ferris
Present
Green Lantern (2021) #1-12, more John and Jo focused but Hal has some fun moments.
Green Lantern (2023) is currently coming out.

As I begin work on making the bracket for the Star Wars Pilots Tournament, there are unfortunately many characters that will not make it into the showdown. These characters were submitted very late in the game and/or only got one submission each, so they are sadly not eligible.
So, ladies, gentlemen, and all other associations of being, I invite you to join me in raising a glass to those pilots who simply did not qualify.
Tumblr media
Dak Ralter (The Empire Strikes Back)
Submitted propaganda: Look he's not really piloting and also he dies in his only scene but I love him
Tumblr media
2. Col "Fake Wedge" Takbright (A New Hope)
Submitted propaganda: Totally would have kicked ass in the Battle of Yavin if he had been there
Tumblr media
3. Thane Kyrell (Lost Stars)
Submitted propaganda: An ex-Imperial who defected and fought in the Rebellion, including the battle of Hoth, Endor and Jakku. He’s also in a very beautiful romance story with his childhood friend and Imperial pilot Ciena Ree
Tumblr media
4. Oddball (Clone Wars/Revenge of the Sith)
Submitted propaganda: none :(
Tumblr media
5. Greez Dritus (Jedi Fallen Order/Survivor)
Submitted propaganda: none :(
Tumblr media
6. Jarek Yeager (Star Wars Resistance)
Submitted propaganda: Rebellion pilot who fought in the Battle of Jakku! Became a racer after the Empire fell but quit after his brother cheating in a race led to an explosion that killed his family. Moved to an out of the way fueling station and decided to run a mechanic's shop instead of piloting. He's drawn back into flying by Kaz when the First Order rises, and becomes a squadron leader/teacher for the next generation of pilots.
Tumblr media
7. Venisa Doza (Star Wars Resistance)
Submitted propaganda: Badass Rebellion pilot who convinced her future husband to defect from the Empire! When the First Order started to rise she immediately joined the Resistance to fight them. Awesome pilot and really good at convincing Imperials/First Order people to defect.
Tumblr media
8. Mara Jade Skywalker (Thrawn trilogy)
Submitted propaganda: none :(
Tumblr media
9. Ooryl Qrygg (Rogue Squadron)
Submitted propaganda: Ooryl is unique in what his contributions mean to his people. There are very few Gand in the Lore but Ooryl qualifies for Rogue Squadron, the best pilots of the New Republic. He also arcs to earn the right to use "I" pronouns, which is extended only to Gand who are famous enough to be known to literally every Gand that exists.
Tumblr media
10. Garik "Face" Loran (X Wing - Wraith Squadron)
Submitted propaganda: none :(
Tumblr media
11. Myn Donos (Wraith Squadron)
Submitted propaganda: Pulled off a nearly impossible rescue (ultimately failed as the other pilot was unconscious and unable to aid) and was the only surviving member of [???]
Tumblr media
12. Wes Janson (Rogue Squadron + Wraith Squadron)
Submitted propaganda: none :(
Tumblr media
13. Derek "Hobbie" Klivian (Rogue Squadron + Wraith Squadron)
Submitted propaganda: none :(
Tumblr media
14. Nawara Ven (Rogue Squadron)
Submitted propaganda: none :(
Tumblr media
15. Temmin "Snap" Wexley (Sequel trilogy and Aftermath trilogy)
Submitted propaganda: none :(
Tumblr media
16. Kazuda Xiono (Star Wars Resistance)
Submitted propaganda: Resistance pilot who joins the Resistance because he wants to make a difference against the First Order and the New Republic isn't doing anything. Very good combat pilot and much more graceful in the air than he is on the ground.
Tumblr media
17. Torra Doza (Star Wars Resistance)
Submitted propaganda: 15 year old racing pilot! Learned how to fly from her mom. Super good at flying and clearly has a lot of fun flying also.
Tumblr media
18. Hype Fazon (Star Wars Resistance)
Submitted propaganda: Super good race pilot who has to adjust to being a combat pilot when the First Order rises. Has a tendency to run from things that frighten him at first (the First Order, added responsibility, growth) but always comes back at the end. Also is delightfully cocky about his piloting skills.
Tumblr media
19. Isabella Garcia-Shapiro / "Pilot Isabella" (Phineas and Ferb/Star Wars crossover)
Submitted propaganda: Okay so she’s the Han Solo of the episode despite Han also being in that, but also I just think this is the funniest technically legal submission I could do I’m not a Star Wars fan <3
Tumblr media
20. that one ufuck (???)
Submitted propaganda: hhrrhhhghgngnhghghggngnghg i hve no fucking clue what any of this means im delirious right now im not even a star wars fan either
Believe me, y'all, I am as upset as you are over some of these not making it in. However, I made the rules and I would just be a hypocrite if I didn't follow them.
BUT stay tuned for the actual bracket with the 32 characters who DID make it in!

Thanks very much for the tag @sinvulkt - here we go...
1. How many works do you have on AO3?
71 as of just last weekend.
2. What’s your total AO3 word count?
484,157
3. What fandoms do you write for?
Primarily Star Wars (and that mostly Sequel Trilogy, though I written some High Republic and a little Original Trilogy and Clone Wars), Horizon: Zero Dawn/Forbidden West and The Horus Heresy (WH40K)
4. What are your top five fics by kudos?
Fire Hawk, Snow Thrush (Horizon Zero Dawn/The Frozen Wilds)
Episode IX: Resurgence and Reckoning (Star Wars Sequels)
Rex's Ruminations (Star Wars: The Bad Batch)
In the Footsteps of a Death Seeker (Horizon Zero Dawn/The Frozen Wilds)
Treat it like a Duel (The Horus Heresy)
5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?
If I get a comment then yes, I absolutely respond. They're relatively sparse for me, so I appreciate them very much.
6. What’s the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
Angstiest ending, you say. I'm kind of bad at sitting in a bad feeli- no, I tell a lie. It's absolutely A Fine Officer, A Good Soldier. Captain Appo locked inside his own head by the Order 66 programming, watching helplessly as his body advances on the Jedi Temple with a blaster in his hands...
7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
I'd say my Episode IX but there is a big sad beat toward the happy ending, so really Fire Hawk, Snow Thrush carries the day here.
8. Do you get hate on your fic?
Luckily no. My shipping choices and maybe other elements make my fics pretty niche, but that also means that I'm not involved in shipping drama, and I don't seem to enrage anyone to the point of leaving angry comments.
9. Do you write smut?
You won't find any under this moniker, that's all I'll say.
10. Do you write crossovers?
I don't presently, although, a year after everyone seemed to be drawing Spider-loys there is a full-on "Horizon characters as Marvel comics superheroes" AU running riot in my head (with Aloy dating Ikrie, who's X-23 Wolverine, Talanah as Hawkeye, Erend Odinsson, Helis as Venom and Regalla as the Prowler). If I ever free up the spare brainpower... maybe that'll happen.
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Yep. It was one of those "steal fics to sell" trawls and it was very odd.
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
I haven't, but if anyone would like to, please drop me a message.
13. Have you ever co-written a fic?
Not since my time in the Brotherhood of the Lost "alternate Horus Heresy" AU project, and that was fairly sparse too. I like collaborating more broadly, but when it comes to the writing itself, I prefer to fly solo.
14. What‘s your all-time favourite ship?
Rey/Kaydel in Star Wars, and Aloy/Ikrie in Horizon. I can't choose between those two.
15. What’s the WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?
Probably one of my Sequels-era fics, set between The Last Jedi and Resurgence and Reckoning. I have some WIPs that threaten to be very plotty and I just don't have as much spare time as I used to. Also I have some OC apprentices for Rey and Finn, whose stories I really want to begin telling and promise to let me move the older characters forward as well.
16. What’s your writing strengths?
Probably my action writing. I read a lot of action and films and tv influence my prose a lot. I think a lot about rhythm, dynamics and all that stuff, and I just enjoy it, which probably helps.
17. What’s your writing weaknesses?
Mystery? I'm yet to really try to write one tbh, but I look at something like Glass Onion or Silo and just struggle to imagine coiling my brain into those shapes.
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?
I've only used it the once, I think, and very much for comic effect. It depends very much on how long a scene is, and how much I want to emphasise a language gap.
19. First fandom you wrote for?
Horus Heresy
20. Favourite fic you’ve ever written?
Err. Arrgh. I really can't answer that. But I am very proud of my recent Star Wars: Lost Stars one, so let's say Stars' Flight.
Not tagging, but feel free to run with this :D

Not me writing a post just because I saw @wilwheaton 's Spotify Wrapped on Instagram and thought "I can show him some new dark/gothic bands" (Links to the playlists in the band's names. Some of Soda Stereo's songs are translated in my main blog @illegalbilingual #Soda Stereo and #Gustavo Cerati)
So let us begin with my country (Argentina)
Soda Stereo basically our The Police with some The Cure and Bowie mixed in (among others that either I don't recognize or don't remember now). Featuring in this playlist:
-Cae el Sol (Sun's down)-En la ciudad de la furia (In the City of Fury) - Lo que sangra (La cúpula) (What bleeds (The Dome)) - Hombre al agua (Man overboard - I translated it as "Man on water" because I'm dumb) - En el borde (On the Edge)- El ritmo de tus ojos (The Rythm of your eyes)- (En) el Séptimo Día ((On) the Seventh Day)- Tele-ka - Corazón delator (Telltale heart)- De música ligera (Of light music)- Cuando pase el temblor (Once the tremor passes by) - Zoom - Juegos de Seducción (Games of Seduction) - Ella usó mi cabeza como un révolver (She used my head like a revolver)- Entre caníbales (Among canibals).
And if you liked Soda, you should listen to Gustavo Cerati's solo career. Sadly he passed away in 2014 after being in coma for 4 years due to a stroke that wasn't properly diagnosed while on tour. In this list:
Te llevo para que me lleves (I'm taking you so you take me (away))- Rapto (Rapture) - Dejà Vu - Tracción a sangre (Blood traction)- Karaoke - Puente (Bridge) - Crimen (Crime) - Adiós (Goodbye)- La Excepción (The Exception) - Corazón delator (sinfónico) (Telltale heart, simphonic version) - Cosas imposibles (Impossible things)- Paseo inmoral (Immoral walk)
Now... let's go to Russia. Yeah, I know not cool overall but I started to learn the language in 2018 so I'm not quitting now and I try to find artists that oppose everything P*tin stands for so...
Агата Кристи (Agatha Christie). The first time I listened to them I associated them with The Cure and Tears for Fears. Vadim is now a P*tin fan but Gleb (the one that wrote about 80% of their catalogue) is not. In this playlist you'll find:
Как на войне (Like in a war)- Сказочная Тайга (Taiga of fables) - Опиум для никого (Opium for nobody -this song just got banned in Russia) - В интересах революции (In interest of the Revolution) - В такси (In a taxi)- Садо-мазо (Sado-maso)- Абордаж (Boarding) - Гномы каннибали (Canibal gnomes)- Трансильвания (Transylvania)- Декаданс (Decadence)- Пуля (Bullet) - Триллер (Thriller) - Грязь (Dirt) - Кто украл мою звезду (Who stole my star?) - Весёлый мир (Happy world) - Последнее желание (Last wish)‐ Ураган (Hurricane)
Gleb started his own band called The Matrixx (at first known as Глеб Самойлоff + The Matrixx) where he got to do and write whatever he wanted. He experiments a lot. The first few albums are dark -kinda like Marilyn Manson- and very political. The rest are more about stories mixed with lots of techno. In this playlist you'll find:
Сердце и Печень (Heart and liver) - Такой день (That day)- Живые но мёртвые (Alive but dead) - Добрая песня (ft. Линда) (The Kind song -ft. Linda-) - Резня (Massacre) - Любить снова (Love again) - В дверь стучат (Knock on the door)- Москва-река (Moscow river) - Никто не выжил (Nobody survived) - Опасность (Danger)- Мы под огнём (We are under fire)- 13 - Романтика (Romance) - Готика (Gothic) - Звезда (Star) - Умереть за любовь (To die of love)- Синие цветы (Blue flowers) - С.Н (S.N)
Now let me introduce you to Король и Шут (The King and the Jester) a punk-rock band that mixed in some russian folckloric sounds and rock. All the lyrics have some magical/horror twist somewhere. Sadly one of the singers Mihail Gorshenov died in 2013. The other singer Andrey Kniazyev has his own band called Княzz (Prince) but I didn't listen much of it since I feel like something's missing also the last formation of the band renamed themselves Северный флот (Siberian flot after one of the songs) and still play some old songs and new ones. In this list you'll find:
Кукла колдуна (The sorcerer's doll) - Лесник (The Forrest ranger)- Прыгну со скалы (I'll jump off a cliff) - Танец злобного гения (The dance of the evil genie) - Камнем по голове (A stone in the head) - Прокляиый старый дом (The old cursed house)- Хозяин леса (The Forrest's Master)- Ром (Rum) - Ели мясо мужики (The men ate meat)- Мёртвый анархист (The dead anarquist)- Марионетки (Puppets) - Мест Гарри (Harry's revenge) - Джокер (Joker) - Тяни! (Pull!)- Сапоги мертвеца (Dead man's boots) - Валет и Дама (Jack and Queen)- Фокусник (Magician) - Король вечного сна (The King of Eternal Sleep. This reminds me A LOT to Sandman. Translation)- Вестник (Herald)- Дагон (Dagon)- В Париж -домой... (In Paris, home).
Honorable mentions:
Линда - Вороно (Linda - Crow) the videoclip is the weirdest thing ever. I love it.
Super Collection Orchestra - Сильнее (Stronger) from the movie Major Grom: The Plague Doctor -highly recommended-
Лето - Summer
Anzhela Vopit
Толко мной (Just -with- me)
Девочка Roketa (Rocket girl)
Мало (A little)
Голова муэссы (Head of Muessy)
Neon

Fic authors self rec! When you get this, reply with your favorite five fics that you've written, then pass on to at least five other writers. Let’s spread the self love 🤎
Lent From Tomorrow (today was too small for us) - MCU/Captain America, Steve/Bucky, WIP
This is simply the best thing I've ever written, including stuff for my MFA. I think I've finally managed to write A Plot, and it's very exciting for me.
2. Could Use A Guy Like Me - Stranger Things, Steve/Joyce, 10k
I really like the way I built character for Joyce in this, and for Steve, too, but Joyce is a lesser-explored character in canon, I think, because she's Just The Mom in a lot of her canon characterization. Which was the whole inspiration for this (the two Moms of the group, hah), really. And I like the voice that I was able to write this in? I'm just proud of it.
3. A Constraint That Makes It Possible to Fly - Star Wars, gen/all/any, 6k
I should get back to adding to this every once in a while, tbh, because I do love this fic. It's a Wings!AU where the size of someone's wings shows their sensitivity to the Force, and how that would change things in canon -- like, everyone can see that pregnant Padme is hella Force sensitive when she wasn't before; Rey and Finn have massive wings growing up and don't know why, etc. A lot of the drabbles in this nonlinear story are some of my all-time favorites. The Leia+Vader section is my favorite SW thing that I've solo-written.
4. The Five Places Cinna Came From - The Hunger Games, Cinna/Finnick, Finnick/Annie, Katniss/Peeta, Cinna/OFC, 60kish I think?
The fact that I wrote this 13 years ago and still reread it and like it means that I'm pretty proud of it. I feel like the idea was creative and I'm proud that I followed through on it and actually wrote all five, for once (hah). The only one that I think reads weak is District 5, but that makes sense since it's the District in this fic that doesn't have much, if any, canon information to build it out. It's dark as hell, but I do love this series.
5. Not in the Answer But the Question - MCU/Captain America, Steve/Bucky, 28k
Firstly, I'm proud that I pushed through some major writer's block to finish this after struggling on it for a really long part of the writing process. Something about the voice just wasn't gelling for me for MONTHS, but I actually went back and rewrote and was able to make it something that I think turned out well. I wish that I'd had more time to flesh out the last quarter, but overall, I think I did pretty well by this premise.
ALT. In Screaming Color - Star Wars, Poe/Rey, WIP/Hiatus
I really want to finish this fic someday, because I do love what's posted, and more than that, I love the 3/4 of the fic that's written but not posted yet because it's missing its connective tissue. I just need to get back on the Star Wars horse at some point. At some point.
And I tag @fille-lioncelle @glamorouspixels @morethanonepage @dracosollicitus and @voylitscope!

New Article about "The Good Nurse"
Tumblr media
"Medical Thriller The Good Nurse Is A Different Kind Of Serial-Killer Movie: ‘It’s About Systems Failing People’ – Exclusive Image", for "Empire Magazine", October 2022 issue.
By Ben Travis, for Empire, September 1st, 2022.
"The last film that you likely saw with Krysty Wilson-Cairns’ writing credit on it was Edgar Wright’s Last Night In Soho – a psychological thriller that, in its final reel, delved into something approaching slasher territory. The BAFTA-winning screenwriter burst onto the scene with her work on Sam Mendes’ war movie 1917, and after teaming up with Wright, her next credit is a solo screenplay on a very different kind of serial-killer tale – The Good Nurse, brought to the screen by Danish filmmaker Tobias Lindholm. It tells the true story of Charles Cullen, here played by Eddie Redmayne, a nurse who killed swathes of patients in New Jersey across his 16-year career – possibly the most prolific serial killer in recorded history. Jessica Chastain stars as Amy Loughren, a fellow nurse who begins to suspect that her unassuming co-worker might be behind a spate of mysterious patient deaths.
Speaking to Empire in the Glass Onion issue, Wilson-Cairns opened up about heading back to killer-thriller territory after Last Night In Soho. “I was adamant I wasn’t going to write another serial-killer movie,” she admits. But with The Good Nurse, she was able to explore the wider implications of what made Cullen’s killings possible. “It’s about systems failing people,” she says. “In this case it’s healthcare systems, but systems failing us is very universal.” Ultimately, she found a medical metaphor for what Cullen did. “The most terrifying thing about this story is that you could replace Charles Cullen with a virus. He’s this entity that wants to kill, and he was passed on from place to place.”
While The Good Nurse isn’t due to arrive on Netflix until 26 October, it’ll be hitting the UK earlier that month – screening at the BFI London Film Festival 2022 in association with Empire (yes, us!) on 10 October. Find tickets at bfi.org.uk, on sale from Tuesday 13 September".

1 & 2 for book asks?
okay yes thank you!!!
book you’ve reread the most times?
this is a little interesting because thinking back there's tv shows and especially podcasts that i've relistened and relistened to but with books i tend to reread them less....that said it’s definitely either the homeward bounders (by diana wynne jones) or the marvelous land of oz (sequel to baum’s ‘the wonderful wizard of oz’ of cinematographic fame).
the homeward bounders is just?? really good?? it’s got a crazy premise and is so good at like... showing this unique pov of this 100-year old immortal preteen and taking all this stuff he goes through and how it effects him but still letting him and the other main characters have very clear personalities. it’s really good at showing effects of trauma subtly and it’s also very funny in some points! it’s also got THEMES- the way it like adapts mythology is so so good.
anyway marvelous land of oz. i still really enjoy it but the amount of times i’ve reread it is because it was a childhood favorite;- i got a kindle paperwhite for christmas at about six or seven with a bunch of public domain classics predownloaded for me and that explains so much about why i am the way i am. anyway this includes all 24 oz books but the marvelous land of oz jumped out to me the most because i really loved ozma, and it’s her introduction/solo book, which she stars in. but then when i read further i felt like she had become this perfect paragon leader (bc of. like. gender roles idk) and all the depth and complexity and comedy of her character had kind of been lost. i think i liked it for slightly different reasons as a kid- i liked the oz books in general because after the first few, oz became this perfect world it was fun to imagine. even now i get hit by the urge to reread the marvelous land of oz! and i do and i enjoy it. i want to buy this fancy illustrated edition so much... it’s always on my mind
2. top 5 books of all time?
okay so obviously there’s gonna be overlap with the above but i’ll give a straight list. this is SO subjective btw
1. the homeward bounders- i mean see above but also know that everything i was talking about? yeah its an 80s book and the plot feels SO based on that 80s thing when everyone was obsessed with d&d and thought it would make demons and monsters. fun fact
2. the war of the worlds- it’s a classic! it’s good! it’s well written! it’s got themes! but mostly something about it just hits the things i like weirdly well? i love sci fi and i also LOVE when characters go through the worst experiences of their life
3. frankenstein- i like being pretentious (this also applies to above) but no uhh legitimately it’s a really good book. BEAUTIFUL prose and the points it makes are brilliantly thought out and executed... like when we start off by walton being like i wish i had a friend!! and then we read through the whole thing and it’s got PAYOFF because a companion is the only thing the creature wants.... people could (and DO!!) analyze this book forever
4. in other lands- it’s a very clever, completely irreverent comic satire of a fantasy world that manages to end up very heartfelt and real! it’s fundamentally a coming of age story, where we watch the main characters go from 13 to... 18 i believe? somewhere around there anyway their arcs are VERY good, and the satire also has very interesting things to say about the real world
5. the marvelous land of oz- unlike the homeward bounders i can’t say much more about this.... charming kid’s book. movies do NOT do it justice and never did (and wicked does even worse. i could TALK about wicked)
bonuses i didn’t mention because they’re plays: ‘rosencrantz and guildenstern are dead’ (by tom stoppard) and ‘chitra’ (by tagore). i NAMED myself chitra so you can better bet the latter had an impact on me. that’s for personal reasons, whereas ragad is just really good and would probably be #1 on this list if i was counting it

28) What is something you wished you’d known before you started posting fanfiction?
💞💙💞💙
1) How old were you when you first starting writing fanfiction?
My first ever try at writing Fanfiction was when I was 13-14 years old. This is going to age me, 😅, but I had just watched Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King in theaters. I don't remember what it was about but I know it had to do with Merry and Pippin.
4) What is your favourite genre to write for?
Angst and hurt/comfort. They are my favorites to write and the ones that I find easiest. There is the added bonus that they are very therapeutic as well.
8) Where do you take your inspiration from?
It depends on the story. Sometimes it will be a prompt, sometimes a random thought that pops into my head as I watch something, sometimes from things that I've experienced or watch someone else go through.
11) Have you ever amended a story due to criticisms you’ve received after posting it?
Nope. Although I haven't posted many of my stories I wouldn't change any of them based off of another person's opinion. I will gladly take advice/constructive criticism from others but someone simply criticizing my story is ignored. If you don't like one of my stories... stop reading that story, I won't be offended. No need to tear an author down and no need to announce your departure either.
13) Who is your least favourite character to write for? Why?
It depends on the fandom.
LOTR/Hobbit - Elrond, Galadriel, or other similar elves. It is so hard to get the feelings and dialogue correct.
Avatar - Mo'at. I love Mo'at but the way she speaks, her mannerisms and how she would act/react just kills me.
Star Wars Universe - I hate writing Han Solo, everything about him rubs me wrong. I'm not a fan of that character, sorry but not really. I also struggle with Yoda. The way he talks is so hard and gives me a headache to try writing.
There are a few other fandoms but these are the ones I can think of right now.
28) What is something you wished you’d known before you started posting fanfiction?
It isn't as scary as I always thought. I have written fanfictions for YEARS but it wasn't until Avatar that I felt brave enough to post anything. When I think about the number of stories I've written and never did anything with... I want to cry. Maybe I'll go through and fix them up so I can post them one day.

Mike Oldfield
Tumblr media
He was born in the city of Reading, England on May 15, 1953. His father Raymond was a doctor who had a guitar he bought while serving in the Royal Air Force in Egypt during World War II. Mike remembers how his father 'used to play the guitar every Christmas Eve, singing the only song he knew how to play, Danny Boy.' Mike also attributed his early interest in music to virtuoso guitarist Bert Weedon. 'I saw it on TV when I was seven years old and immediately convinced my father to buy me my first guitar. In fact, I think if it hadn't been for Bert I never would have become the main thing in my life.' The Oldfields became a musical family. Mike's older brother, Terry is now a renowned composer in the field of TV documentary music and already has several albums on the market. His sister Sally became a professional singer and had a hit in the early 80's with everyone known as 'Mirrors', she now calls herself Natasha Oldfield. By the age of 10, Mike was already composing instrumental pieces for acoustic guitar. The guitar was for him more than an instrument. it was an escape route from a family situation that was worsening and cutting him off from the outside world for a long time. Throughout the past decade, the acoustic music scene had been in very good health. Music was played in many of the clubs that were open during that period. It was in one of those clubs where young Mike began to realize that his musical ideas were accepted by a large majority of the public. 'He used to have two 15-minute instrumentals that he would play at the local folk clubs where he would go through all the styles,' he would say. 'He would even totally detune the strings and bend them over the neck and do all sorts of things. As soon as I got vacations from school, he would spend the whole week practicing and playing the guitar.' He also tried electronic music, him playing instrumental pieces from 'The Shadows' in an amateur band. When he was 13 years old, the Oldfield family moved to Romford in Essex. In 1967, he dropped out of school and together with his sister Sally formed Sallyangie, a folk voice and guitar duo. They were signed by the Transatlantic company, which released the album 'Children Of The Sun' in 1968 and the single 'Two Ships' in 1969. Around this time Mike's guitar playing was heavily influenced by 'baroque folk' popularized by John Renbourn, Pentangle leader and Bert Jansch. After a year, the end of Sallyangie came. Mike returned to rock music, forming another group of similar duration called Barefeet. That led to a job as a bassist with Kevin Ayers & the Whole World. Ayers was a founding member of Soft Machine but left the group in 1968. The following year they made the 'Joy Of A Toy' album which led to a tour in 1970. Among the members of the Whole World was David Bedford taking care of the keyboards. Bedford, who was a classically trained composer, struck up a good friendship with Mike, helping him compose an early version of Tubular Bells. While on tour with The Whole World, Mike came into contact with the Centipede, a huge jazz band conducted by Keith Tippett. The wide range of instruments available to them influenced Mike in the multi-instrumental character that he would later give to his own compositions. Kevin Ayers & the Whole World recorded two albums, Shooting At The Moon and Whatevershebringswesing before splitting up in August 1971. Until then Mike had been playing electric guitar and his masterful solos with Kevin Ayers had already earned him a reputation as a master. The Road to Tubular Bells: 1971-1973 During that period Mike began to order the musical ideas that would later form part of Tubular Bells. Using a four-track recorder with two tracks going one way and two tracks going the other that Kevin Ayers lent him, he discovered that if he covered the erase head with a small piece of cardboard he could record on four tracks. In this way he could begin to record the ideas necessary to realize his dream. That dream was to create a symphony, similar to the large-scale compositions for orchestra with different movements that could be found in many works of classical music. With Ayers' tape recorder he went into his bedroom in the house he shared with the other members of the group, and ideas for his new work slowly began to take shape. Already involved in the work, Mike insisted on playing all the instruments himself. And he thought that it would not be difficult for him with his natural gift to master almost any instrument; from the glockenspiel to the grand piano, the classical guitar, the Farfisa organ… . While continuing to work with Kevin Ayers, he also assisted with recordings being made at London's famous Abbey Road Studios. He soon discovered that the studio had a warehouse full of all kinds of instruments, so he would manage to arrive early and while the others arrived, he would experiment with those instruments and thus incorporate new sounds and textures into his musical ideas. Engrossed in his work, he set out to capture all the deep emotions he was experiencing at that time in his music. Either way, one would have to wonder if Mike's state of mind would have allowed him to withstand the pressure of working with other people much longer. Especially considering that what he was doing would be a job that he would gradually become a vehicle to unload his deepest emotions and those with which he was having the most trouble living. After creating a small demo, he started going through all the record labels trying to convince someone to support his project. They all gave him a resounding NO for an answer, saying that this was 'not commercial' and that if it were ever published, no one would buy it. Obviously, that had happened to him for putting his faith in that little worked model. After having composed the hypnotic introduction (the theme that would form the main part of his magnum opus after developing it), he would still remember that. If only he could have recorded, edited and promoted it! But a ray of light would illuminate his future. Mike left the Kevin Ayers band and worked occasionally as a guitarist to earn a living. One such job was in the backing band for the £5 a night London production of Hair, the 'tribal love-rock musical'. He also played bass for a time in a band led by soul singer Arthur Lewis. The group was to record at a recently opened studio in a mansion in Shipton-on-Cherwell, 20 miles from Oxford. The Manor recording studios were built for Richard Branson by Tom Newman, assisted among others by Simon Heyworth. It was a team of good friends. The girlfriends of some of them were also there to attend to them, as well as a cook, cleaners and gardeners. As Mike later commented, 'We treated any problems that came up like we were one big family.' The great atmosphere in the studio and the attitude of Newman and Heyworth gave Mike the opportunity to record a demo of his musical ideas. They both loved it. Heyworth and Newman launched a campaign to persuade Branson to edit it and to leave the studio for a while to record it. From the outset it seemed that this was not the appropriate moment. The project had to wait a bit for the arrival of Simon Draper who would join Branson to create the Virgin record company. Draper had extensive musical knowledge and when he heard Mike's ideas, he was immediately enthusiastic. Mike continued to develop and refine his ideas that he could now give a name to: Tubular Bells, although it initially carried names like Breakfast in Bed and Opus One (Opus 1). But she had almost given up hope of realizing her dream when Draper offered her a week of study time at The Manor. A wide selection of instruments was brought into the studio and work began. During that week something else of the first part was recorded, and the rest of the work during sessions spread over the following months. From the beginning Mike put the facilities that the technology of the time gave him to the limit to make his recordings. Very soon he started using 16 tracks. As more and more instruments were added to the recording, the sessions were also a test of the inventive resources of Newman and Heyworth who mixed it all together as well as they could be based on their knowledge. The studio's equipment was not automated, and all the work was done manually by Mike. Simon Heyworth and Tom Newman were already using every finger at their disposal on the mixing desk. This made the relationship between producers and artist less close, but even so, each of the three learned many things from their other two companions. During the session, Mike played over 20 instruments and approximately 2000 test tapes were recorded. The music was played almost entirely by himself, except for Viv Stanshall (Vocals), Jon Field (Flute), Steve Broughton (Percussion) and Mundy Ellis (Vocals). Tom Newman and Simon Heyworth earned credit as co-producers. When the sessions were over, Branson took the Tubular Bells tapes with him to the music industry fair, MIDEM, in Cannes in January 1973. An executive from an American company told him, 'if you put lyrics on it, I'll buy it for $20,000. '. With no one showing interest, Branson and Draper decided to release the album themselves on their new Virgin Records label. Tubular Bells was released on May 25, 1973. It came out of a recording and mixing process that could have been called art in its purest form. Critics did what they could to define it. The public simply opened their hearts to him. The press in his country was perplexed. Influential BBC radio DJ John Peel wrote that it was 'a record that genuinely covered new and uncharted territory', with music that 'combines logic with surprise, sunshine with rain'. 'A lengthy work, almost classical in its structure and in the way the theme is established and deftly worked', said the Melody Maker. Some interviewers even thought they could tell what Mike's influences were: 'The texture of Tubular Bells is quite reminiscent of Sibelius, Vaughan Williams, Michel Legrand and The Last Night Of The Proms,' wrote television producer Tony Palmer. Tubular Bells will always be remembered as a moment in rock music history that captured the hearts and imaginations of many people. It was also a starting point from which to appreciate the many changes and discoveries made by this creator who, starting at the age of 19, grew in maturity. The album entered the UK charts in July and soon reached No. 1. Tubular Bells began selling out across Europe. In June 1973, a live concert by Tubular Bells was given at the Queen Elizabeth Hall in London. Mike was joined for this occasion by guitarists Mick Taylor (of the Rolling Stones), Steve Hillage (of Gong), Fred Frith (of Henry Cow) and Ted Speight. Also taking part were David Bedford, Kevin Ayers and Pierre Moerlen, the percussionist for the avant-garde rock band Gong and who would be a fixture on Mike's band of musicians for many years. Although his appearance was announced, Stevie Winwood could not play at the end because due to certain problems she had not had much time to rehearse. The audience's response was described by a New Musical Express journalist as follows: 'The entire audience stood up and started asking for more. That was just one of those rare, spur-of-the-moment tokens of appreciation.' Tubular Bells was also released in the United States, but everything was happening more slowly there. The necessary push for the album's sales to skyrocket came when film director William Friedkin, encouraged by Richard Branson, decided to use a 4-minute excerpt in the controversial horror film The Exorcist. Mike was not consulted regarding the association of his work with that film and would later tell reporters that he had not liked it. In the UK, a Tubular Bells single was released with a remixed version of the album in a 'quadraphonic' version, a system that required four speakers for full use. To show the wonders of that new system, the Tubular Bells 'Quad' included an extra sequence of an airplane appearing to move around the listener, which was recorded after The Sailor's Hornpipe. The Shooting Star: 1974-1975 Mike Oldfield had long dreamed of the time when Tubular Bells would be released. When that happened he couldn't take the pressure and still emotionally exhausted from the recording process for Tubular Bells he retired to his new home in Herefordshire. It was there that he began creating his new work that would later take the name of nearby Hergest Ridge. Released in England in September 1974, like its predecessor Tubular Bells, this was an album containing a single theme song. Again almost all the instruments are played by Mike himself. The most talked about effect was what one reviewer called a 'electrical storm'. Other musicians who contributed to the album included Sally Oldfield and Clodagh Simmonds (vocals), June Whiting and Lindsay Cooper (oboes), and Ted Hobart (trumpet). For Mike, music composition was a constant work in progress. The symphonic scheme used in Tubular Bells was continued in a series of later works: Hergest Ridge, Ommadawn, Incantations, QE2 and Amarok. Hergest Ridge went straight to number one on the UK sales chart. Virgin Records also advertised it on television, although the slogan had to be changed for this purpose. The ad originally said the album was available from 'Virgin and other immaculate record stores'. It had to be changed for another due to the possible objections that the Catholic Church could present. Although some critics viewed Hergest Ridge as inferior to Tubular Bells, most loved it. One said it was 'The most everyday rock music with some classical symphony'. Another wrote that it was 'a series of emotional spikes exploding here and there through a tickling stillness'. In December 1974, the orchestral versions of Tubular Bells and Hergest Ridge were presented in concert at the Royal Albert Hall in London. The concert was planned by David Bedford who conducted the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra with guitar solos by Steve Hillage. Mike himself would play the guitar in the studio version of that concert, which was released in January 1975 under the name The Orchestral Tubular Bells. In that same year but a little later those same orchestral arrangements were presented in concerts in Glasgow and Newcastle. In Scotland, Steve Hillage played guitar parts with the Scottish National Orchestra, and the soloist in the North East was Andy Summers, later a member of The Police. The sense of humor that was evident in the 'introduction to the instruments' of Tubular Bells was prominently featured on Don Alfonso, a single that was released in March 1975. With the help of Chris Cutler (drums), David Bedford (vocals ) and Kevin Ayers (Wine Bottles), Mike told the story of a bullfighter who worked for Oxo ('Worked for Oxo'). In a slightly more serious direction, he released Ommadawn in September 1975. His third great work of symphonic rock had taken him nine months to record. At Ommadawn, Mike played about 20 instruments, ranging from guitars to grand piano to spinet. The album incorporated music from Africa and Ireland by way of Jabula's African percussion group and the Uilean bagpipes of Paddy Moloney, leader of the Chieftains. Other contributing artists included Terry and Sally Oldfield, members of the Hereford City Band, and recorder (a type of flute) soloist Leslie Penney. Penney also accompanied Mike on the Christmas single, a version of the traditional Christmas carol In Dulci Jubilo which managed to reach number four in the UK charts. Although many journalists hailed Ommadawn as yet another triumph, some resentment began to show in some criticism of the album by others. Perhaps influenced by the influx of rock fashion into previously retro-style pubs, one UK pop newspaper called Ommadawn 'bland and inconsequential'. An excellent background music for banquets.' Although he had not yet returned from the tour he was doing to promote that work, Mike contributed to albums by other musicians with whom he was associated. His guitar playing can be heard on records released in 1975 by David Bedford, Edgar Broughton and Tom Newman. The impact of Tubular Bells continued in 1975. In that year it was awarded a Grammy for Best Instrumental Composition and the enormous popularity that these instruments (tubular bells) were reaching led the company that manufactured them, Premier, to launch a selling a new range of rigid metal tubes. In a different vein, a reader wrote to Mayfair magazine: 'The most exciting moment of my sex life came recently when we both finally climaxed together listening to the end of Mike Oldfield's Tubular Bells.' Out of the limelight: 1976-1978 In the following years the then world famous Tubular Bells theme appeared in a disco version by the Champs Boys, a group of French studio musicians. That was almost all that was heard of Mike's music in 1976, although fans of equestrian sports did hear an excerpt from Ommadawn as an intro to the televised broadcast of the Horse Of The Year Show. Mike hid from the public for longer than he did from 1976 to 1978. He would later tell reporters that he had psychological problems and that is why he went into seclusion in the country at his home in Gloucestershire to create the music that would later be called Incantations. . To hide it from the public eye, Virgin compiled Boxed, a four-disc set containing their three albums released to date and a fourth disc containing singles, special collaborations on records by other artists, and a song sung by Mike himself called Speak (Tho ' You Only Say Farewell). Mike's only new work in 1976 was the Christmas single, Portsmouth, another traditional song arranged by Oldfield. It reached number 3, one position above that of In Dulci Jubilo. Help, I can't find any good Hal reading lists, where do I go after Emerald Dawn??

Some of these repeat, not all are necessary but I advise reading at least Emerald Dawn/Emerald Dawn II or Secret Origins or Showcase #22

20 Questions - Writer’s Edition
Thank you for tagging me @chierafied 💕💕💕
How many works do you have on AO3? 79
What’s your total AO3 word count? 1,820,522
How many fandoms have you written for and what are they? Technically, 2 (Star Wars and Inuyasha), though it looks like (5) because of the cross-overs
What are your top 5 fics by kudos? Hit Me With Your Best Shot (Reylo) He angled his head away just enough for her attempt to miss before he brought both her arms down in front of her, so he could wrap his hand around both of her wrists. With his free hand, he cupped her face, forcing her to look at him.  “It’s done.” He had a warning tone in his voice. “Yield.” MMA fighter, Kylo Ren is suspended from the league and sentenced to community service at his uncle’s martial arts academy. There he meets Rey Niima, a recent graduate with a natural ability and incredible potential. Two Truths & a Lie (Reylo) “My favorite color is black.” “I prefer pizza over cake.” “I think I'm falling in love with you.” Or in others words, Kylo Ren, Editor-in-Chief, should not drink alone with his beguiling staff writer, Rey Andor after hours. Silver & Gold (SessKag) Kagome finds a wounded stray in the park and takes him in. Seemingly indifferent to her, the dog serves as a quiet companion who eases her loneliness. He becomes a constant in her routine until one night changes everything. Kagome wakes up to an arm draped around her waist — a pale arm with purple markings. Lessons in Parenting (SessKag) Sesshomaru finds Rin not as a child but as an infant. Unsure how to care for a baby, he seeks help from the only trustworthy human he knows: his brother's miko. *2nd Place Winner - 'Best Characterization' for Feudal Connection's 2021 3rd Quarterly Inuyasha Fandom Awards!* If Found, Please Return (Reylo) Rey knows what it's like to be abandoned, so when she returns a lost dog to his posh Manhattan address, she gives his owner an earful. The only problem is, the dog's owner isn't the arrogant redhead she screamed at. It's Ben Solo, the world-renowned actor. And he's just offered her a job.
Do you respond to comments, why or why not? Yes (or at least I try to). If someone takes the time to read my story and leave me a note, I want to thank them. Each time I see a new note in my Inbox, I’m like 😍😍😍 And I understand how busy RL can be so I appreciate anyone who takes the time to let me know their thoughts.
What’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending? If you’ve read my work, you know I’m not big on sad endings. I prefer happy ones, mostly because life is draining enough as it is. But in terms of fic endings, if I had to pick one, I’d say: Before the Dawn.
What’s the fic you’ve written with the happiest ending? This is a tough one. I guess it depends on how you define ‘happiest’. If you categorize it by the fluffiest (it’s all about the feel-good vibes 🥰 ), then I’d have to go with Melt or First Words for the SessKag fandom and Sight Unseen for the Reylo fandom.
Do you write crossovers? If so what is the craziest one you’ve written? Yes. I’m not sure if it’s the craziest one, but the one I’m most proud of is Happenstance which is my Inuyasha/Harry Potter crossover, featuring SessKag. I put a lot of research into it to meld the worlds together without compromising what makes each fandom so special to me. It’s definitely the fic that I’m most proud of writing.
Have you ever received hate on a fic? Yep, a lot of people think Reylo is a toxic relationship. And there are those who have strong feelings about SessKag too. Some have commented to me about the fact that Yashahime is canon and SessKag is dead....which makes me laugh but whatever helps you sleep at night.
Do you write smut? If so what kind? I have but lately it’s been a struggle. I focus more on intimacy (in whatever form that takes depending on the pace of the story).
Have you ever had a fic stolen? Not that I’m aware of...
Have you ever had a fic translated? Yes, a few have been translated into Spanish and Russian.
Have you ever co-written a fic before? Waaaaaaay back in the FFnet days, a friend and I co-wrote a fic together but between our RL schedules we never finished. I actually don’t even know if it’s still posted since it was under her account.
What’s your all time favorite ship? That’s another tough one. TRoS really burned me and my love of Star Wars has suffered for it.
What’s a WIP that you want to finish but don’t think you ever will? Of Scales & Sky. I was so excited about this fic but my motivation has died from all the discourse in the fandom and the on-going saga of bad decisions Disney makes in regards to the SW franchise.
What are your writing strengths? Characterization is very important to me. Even if I’m putting the characters is a very non-canon premise, I want them to remain as in-character as possible.
What are your writing weaknesses? Finding the time to write. 🥲 This year has been particularly chaotic for me for several reasons.
What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic? I did write some Japanese when I re-entered the SessKag fandom with Silver & Gold. I had one very adamant reviewer who kept DM-ing me that I sounded stupid and should stop. It was very discouraging. After asking around in the fandom, other writers suggested doing what I wanted but if I’m writing in English, the primary language should remain English.
What was the first fandom you wrote for? Labyrinth. When I was 13, my friend and I used to go to her house after school, sit on separate couches across from each other on our separate laptops, and write fanfiction. (*smiles* those were great times!) I often wrote in my notebooks (instead of taking notes in class) and was constantly posting on FFnet. But I also never finished anything because I was constantly distracted by other things.
What’s your favorite fic you’ve written? That’s like asking which child is my most favorite. 😂🤣😂 Happenstance is the fic that I’m most proud of. I feel like as a writer, it was the most challenging for me because of the continuity of the story line with the element of mystery. Shadow Song was written on a whim and quickly became one of my favorites and then there is Sanguis Sanguinem Meum which flowed so naturally that I wrote the entire thing in a couple of months.

Supernatural stars reflect on the show's undying legacy
Jared Padalecki, Jensen Ackles, and Misha Collins discuss 15 years of fantasy, family, and flannel.
"We only get one shot at this." Sam and Dean Winchester are surrounded. The monster-hunting brothers are standing on the edge of a cliff. They look to Castiel, their brother in arms — or is it wings? — but even he can’t help. One move in the wrong direction could ruin everything. After years of fighting demons, going toe-to- toe with Satan himself, and saving the world multiple times, they once again find themselves in a position of having to perform under pressure. But this situation is unlike anything they’ve ever dealt with before. All eyes are on them as they have one shot…at getting the perfect picture.
It’s a dry, hot August day in Malibu — when people were still allowed to gather outside — as Supernatural stars Jensen Ackles, Jared Padalecki, and Misha Collins prepare for the last setup of their final Entertainment Weekly cover shoot. With a bottle of champagne in each of their hands, Ackles once again reminds them they get “one shot” to do this right. But if their characters can shoulder the weight of the world, surely these three can handle a photo. Read the whole story below
The champagne soaking is meant to be a celebration of 15 years, of making television history. Supernatural, the story of two brothers destined to save the world, is the longest-running genre show in the history of American broadcast television. (So old, the first three seasons shot on this thing called film.) What started as an underdog story, living its first few years on the verge of cancellation, has become an institution, a milestone to which other shows aspire. Supernatural not only survived the move from The WB to The CW after its first season — it’s now the final WB show left standing — but became the backbone of the now highly successful CW network. Over the years, the sci-fi series has aired on every weeknight, helping to launch shows including Arrow and The Vampire Diaries. The network moved it one final time, most recently, to Mondays, to help Roswell, New Mexico expand its audience. “Supernatural is a major link to many of the shows that we have successfully built to market,” The CW’s chairman and CEO Mark Pedowitz says. “Almost every one of our shows has had it as a lead-out or a lead-in.”
And to think, it all started as a promise to bring horror to television. After Supernatural creator Eric Kripke had finished working with Warner Bros. on 2003’s Tarzan series, he pitched the idea of a reporter who travels around hunting urban legends. As he puts it, it was a Kolchak: The Night Stalker rip-off. But when he realized the story would benefit from having brothers at its core, he started writing. “At the time, The Ring and The Grudge were huge hits in theaters,” Kripke remembers. “We said, ‘We’re going to take that experience and we’re going to put it on TV,’ and the initial goal was to be scary.” After Warner Bros. passed on his first, what he calls “uptight,” draft, Kripke had to reassess the kind of show he was creating. “I canceled all my Christmas plans and wrote that second draft in three weeks,” he says. “That was when the show got its sense of humor, because I was locked alone, over winter break, in my office. I couldn’t do anything fun, so I started entertaining myself.”
The show was still scary, but it was also funny and, over the years, would continue to evolve. Sure, you could say it’s a little bit X-Files — in its early days, the show often used the line “The X-Files meets Route 66” — and there were definite Star Wars influences (Sam and Dean were originally based on Luke Skywalker and Han Solo). But no combination of pop culture is going to perfectly describe Supernatural because the show has managed to do something remarkably rare in the age of peak TV, where audiences are so overwhelmed with content that an original idea seems foreign: It’s created a truly one-of- a-kind experience.
For starters, it’s a show about two flannel-wearing, beer-loving, blue-collar dudes from Kansas who for a good chunk of their lives traveled from cheap motel to cheap motel, paying for gas and greasy diner food with a mix of fake credit cards and money they earned scamming people at the pool table. “Almost all television is about rich people or, at the very least, middle-class people,” co-showrunner Andrew Dabb says. “The fact that we’ve been able to take this Midwestern blue-collar approach to this genre feels like we’re breaking the mold.”
But the mold-breaking didn’t stop there. Supernatural might’ve started out as a horror show with some snarky one-liners, but it evolved into some of the boldest, most experimental (and certainly strangest) stories on the small screen. “We’re a show of big swings,” co-showrunner Robert Singer says. “I used to say, with every idea, ‘This will be a home run or they’ll cancel us,’ but every year we wanted to do something really nuts." And when he says nuts, we’re not just talking about the episode with the talking teddy bear or the murderer targeting imaginary friends. Those are just some standard monsters of the week. We’re talking about the black-and-white episode shot like a classic Hollywood monster movie, or the episode that introduced Chuck (Rob Benedict), a prophet — who’d later reveal himself to be God — who was famous for writing a book series called Supernatural. That, of course, led to Sam and Dean attending a Supernatural fan convention as the show continued to redefine what it meant to inject a series with meta humor. And the swings never stopped. Season 13 featured a Scooby-Doo crossover as an animated Sam, Dean, and Castiel solved a case alongside the Mystery Inc. gang. And in season 14, after giving God a sister a few years prior, the show made the Big Man Himself its final villain. “I don’t think any idea, barring some production concerns, has been viewed as too crazy,” Dabb says. “Because we know that our fans are smart and that they’ll follow these guys anywhere.”
So long as each episode features Sam and Dean — and the occasional heartfelt talk on the hood of the Impala — the show can do just about anything, which is another reason Kripke had to rewrite his first draft of the pilot. Originally, Dean was the only brother who knew about monsters growing up, bringing Sam up to speed later in life. It wasn’t until Kripke figured out that they needed to be in this together that the series snapped into place. Because at the end of it all, they’re two brothers bonded by the loss of their mother and a life spent on the road with an absentee father. (It just so happens that their mother was killed by a demon and their father hunted them.) The familial dynamic — the irrational codependency, as the angel Zachariah (Kurt Fuller) once called it — is the most important part of the show. “The first inkling I had that we had something special was shooting the pilot,” Kripke says. “It was the scene on the bridge when Sam and Dean talk about their mother. It was the first time that you really saw their chemistry and their connection as brothers on full display. Because I’ve always said this show begins and ends with whether you believe that sibling relationship.” But Sam and Dean weren’t just the center of the show. For many years, they were the show.
Supernatural has never been an ensemble drama. For the first 82 hours of the series, Ackles and Padalecki were the only long-running series regulars — Katie Cassidy and Lauren Cohan briefly joined for season 3, appearing in 12 episodes combined. But Sam and Dean weren’t just in every episode; they anchored every episode. (They skipped table reads because there would’ve been only two actors there.) “I had many moments of not only questioning, ‘Can I keep this up?’ but an answer of ‘I cannot keep this up,’ ” Padalecki, 37, who’s been vocal about his struggle in the early seasons, says. “I borrowed strength from Jensen.” But even Ackles, 42, admits it was a tough job. “The 23-episode seasons were nine and a half months of filming,” he adds. “It was a lot of work, but I always came back to: I still enjoy it, I still like telling the story, I still like these characters and the people I work with.”
Not only did the guys stick around, they built a reputation of having created one of the warmest sets in the business, with a number of crew members staying with the production all 15 seasons. It all dates back to a talk Kripke had with his stars during the filming of the series’ second episode. “I said, ‘The show is about your two characters, and with that comes this responsibility,’ ” Kripke says. Padalecki remembers the exact setting of what he calls their “Good Will Hunting moment,” a bench in Stanley Park in Vancouver, where they film. It was a chat both actors took to heart. “We’d both been on other sets,” Ackles says. “We knew we wanted to enjoy it, to have fun with our crew; we wanted them to like us and us to like them and to have fun doing what we do.” It’s an attitude Pedowitz hopes bleeds into other CW shows, an attitude that launched an annual tradition where the CW chairman/CEO takes his new casts out to dinner with the Supernatural guys, a chance for the vets to share advice. “It’s always the most flattering situation,” Padalecki says, recalling a moment he had a few years back with the late Luke Perry, who was a part of the Riverdale cast. “Luke was sitting next to me and he was like, ‘What y’all have done and what we hear about you guys, it’s really cool to be associated with y’all in some way, shape, or form,’” he recalls. “And I’m sitting there pinching myself.”
It’s a behind-the-scenes legacy that’s perhaps just as impressive, if not more so, than the onscreen legacy. Collins, 45, who started as a guest star and the show’s first angel in season 4, has become the show’s third-longest-running series regular, and he still remembers walking onto set his first day. “When you’re coming onto a show as a guest star, it can be a little bit nerve-racking,” Collins says. “Coming to this set, it was an immediately different vibe. Think- ing about working on other shows in the future, that’s something that I aspire to bring with me.”
A similar reputation extends to the fans as well. Not only is the #SPNFamily one of the most dedicated fandoms out there, it’s also known to be a pretty nice one. (Not many fandoms can say they’ve helped launch a crisis support network for their fellow fans.) But their dedication isn’t just about seeing what crazy twist God throws at Team Free Will next. Thanks to fan conventions and social media, the viewers are just as invested in the lives of the actors. Supernatural’s not just about the words on the page, it’s about the actors saying them. “When you’re dealing with the public taste, there’s an alchemy of great writing, a great idea, and the close-up that’s required,” Peter Roth, chairman of Warner Bros. Television Group, says. “You need stars who you want in your living room.” And you need stars who want to be in your living room, and who, even after 15 years, care so deeply that they get emotional while taking photos in Malibu.
"It's going to be a long eight months," Ackles declares. Standing on that same ledge, an hour before the champagne shot, Ackles, Padalecki, and Collins walk away from a group hug after unexpectedly starting to tear up. It might be the setting — looking out over the ocean — or the occasion: their last-ever photo shoot. Or maybe it’s the fact that they’re almost a month into filming their final season.
It had been a question posed to the stars for years: How long will this show continue? How long can it continue? “Even my mom and dad were like, ‘When are you going to be done with this?’” Ackles says with a laugh. It was a decision the network and studio had ultimately put into the actors’ hands, and it was a conversation they’d been having for a while. Back in 2016, Padalecki told EW, “If we don’t make it to [episode] 300, I think Ackles and I will both be truly bummed.” But in season 14, they hit 300…and then kept going. While filming episode 307, they announced the upcoming 15th season would be the end, which will bring them to a total of 327 episodes when all is said and done. “[Jared] and I were always married to the fact that we never wanted to go out with a diet version of what we had,” Ackles says. “We wanted to have enough gas left in the tank to get us racing across the finish line. We didn’t want to limp across.” Padalecki remembers the moment it hit him — not the decision to end it, but rather the opposite. “We had that moment where he and I both realized that we didn’t want it to end,” he says. “It finally got to a point, ironically, where it was like, ‘I never want to leave this. I could do this until the day I die, and then if I get the choice when I’m dead, I’ll re-up!’ But you never want to be the last person at a party. We just knew. That’s not to say there haven’t been vacillations, but we all trust the decision that was made.”
Starting in July 2019, the cast and crew returned to Vancouver to begin filming the final season, but in March 2020, with two episodes left to go, they were sent home. For years, fans had wondered what, if anything, could stop the Winchesters, and now it seems we have the answer: a global pandemic. As sets closed amid social-distancing measures due to the spread of COVID-19, it didn’t take long for fans to start connecting the dots, sharing relevant GIFs from episodes that featured viruses, most notably Chuck telling Dean to hoard toilet paper “like it’s made of gold” before the end of the world in season 5’s “The End.” (Did we mention that Supernatural is also kind of psychic? In a season 6 episode, Dean calls Sam “Walker, Texas Ranger,” which just so happens to be the role Padalecki has lined up after this ends.)
When production paused, it all felt a little like we were living in an episode of the show, just waiting for Sam and Dean to drive up in Baby, open those creaky doors, and save us. They might not be able to do quite that, but the thing with the Winchesters is that they never stay down for long. When Supernatural is able to safely resume production, it will. And though there are only two episodes left to film, fans will enjoy a total of seven unseen hours, including the return of Charlie (Felicia Day) and a mystery woman who visits the bunker and, for some reason, gives Sam and Dean all the holidays they never got to celebrate. “She makes Christmas for them and Thanksgiving, birthday parties, and all that. It’s a very good episode,” Singer says, adding, “I don’t know when it’s going to air.”
That’s the thing—no one knows, not even the guys who took out Yellow Eyes, stopped Leviathans, defeated Death himself, and are supposedly destined to be the messengers of God’s destruction. But Sam and Dean do know the value of a good plan B. “Obviously it’s a horribly unfortunate situation we’re in, but the silver lining is that it gives us an opportunity to recharge,” Ackles says. “We had just finished episode 18, we shot one day of episode 19, and I was reading these two monster scripts thinking, ‘It’s like we’re at the end of a marathon and they want us to sprint for the last two miles.’ I feel like this almost gives us an opportunity to refocus and go into the last two episodes and hit them with everything we got.” Because when they do return to set, shave their quarantine beards, and step back into Sam and Dean’s shoes for the last time, they’ll have one shot at ending this thing…and they’re determined not to miss.

Administrator Sly Moore conspires against Darth Vader
Tumblr media
Administrator Sly Moore has been in Emperor Palpatine’s inner circle when he was still Chancellor of the Galactic Republic. A cunning political figure hailing from the planet Umbara and who is Force-Sensitive, Moore is dangerous, possibly much more so than the Emperor’s other right-hand person, Grand Vizier Mas Amedda.
When Darth Vader was punished by Emperor Palpatine for his side quest of finding out more information about his son, Luke Skywalker, Moore was one of the allies the Emperor ordered to eliminate the former Jedi Knight Anakin Skywalker. After Ochi of Bestoon, a Sith assassin, thought that he had defeated Vader on the volcanic planet of Mustafar, the Administrator felt that she had to pick up the pieces due to knowing that Vader could not be kept down that easily. After Vader got off Mustafar with Ochi as his prisoner, Moore was on board a Star Destroyer pursuing Vader and sending an entire fleet of TIE Fighters after him. However, the Sith quickly defeated the TIEs thanks to his skills as a pilot, his abilities in the Force, and a giant space creature enroute to the planet Exegol.
After she, Vader, and Ochi witness the Emperor’s true power and his plans involving Exegol, Moore also witnesses the Emperor’s armored enforcer being restored. However, this has the administrator concerned and by the end of “Darth Vader no.13,” she is revealed to have conspired with IG-88 and a secret group of followers to finally kill Vader.
Warning Spoilers Ahead
“Star Wars: Darth Vader no. 14” begins on the Imperial throne world of Coruscant where two Imperial cadets are in awe at how Darth Vader survived his ordeal on Mustafar by just being held together by Separatist droid parts. They comment that Vader is basically unstoppable. As Vader strides triumphantly with his new right hand man Ochi of Bestoon at his side, Administrator Sly Moore is not at all impressed.
Seeing her disappointment, Emperor Palpatine instigates jealousy within the Umbaran when he asks if she is satisfied with Vader being restored to full function and health. Sly admits that she failed to defeat Vader which the Emperor agrees and then chuckles as he walks away from her. To make matters worse, as the Umbara follows the Emperor, Grand Vizier Mas Amedda tells her that she is needed at the Prescreen Department. Moore quickly learns that due to her failure, she has been demoted to Sub-administrator. The Umbaran looks on as Amedda and Palpatine take the turbolift toward the Imperial Palace. Several Imperial officers and stormtroopers look on at the now Sub-administrator Moore.

As I continue to read this series, I continue to praise Greg Pak as one of the many writers who knows how to write Star Wars along with Charles Soule. In this issue, the story’s main focus is on Sly Moore and the ongoing battle for supremacy within the Emperor’s inner circle. The inner conflict within the Galactic Empire is nothing new in Star Wars. We have seen plenty of Imperials conspire against each other or their allies. For example, there have been several past stories where the Grand Moff Tarkin has traded blows with Darth Vader. In addition, there have been previous comic issues where the Emperor has sent potential new enforcers or apprentices to kill Vader so that he can replace him. Furthermore, there have been other stories in the Star Wars Legends lore, like “Shadows of the Empire, '' where Vader has deep animosity for the Emperor’s ally and leader of the Black Sun criminal syndicate, the Falleen Prince Xizor. In this latest “Vader” issue, Paks narration and dialogue between the characters are a reminder of how the Sith operate with each other and their allies. I also feel that Pak’s inclusion of the subtle infighting within the Emperor’s inner circle is a reminder of the Tragedy of Darth Plagueis with Wise.
While toiling away at the Prescreen Department with two Imperial officers, the now Sub-administrator Moore discovers that a high-ranking Imperial has been given an invitation to attend the auction of the carbonite frozen Han Solo from Crimson Dawn. Moore also hears the name “Skywalker” and sees this as a potential opportunity to enact revenge on Darth Vader.
Moore begins to put her plan into motion by heading to the repair block where Vader was fully restored back in “Darth Vader no. 12” so that she can get the schematics on his machine-infused anatomy. Mas Amedda catches her and the two discuss their roles within the Emperor’s inner circle and how they serve the Sith and do not have the power to “indulge in their pleasures.” Sly being sly tells Amedda to pretend that he did not catch her while she, unbeknownst to the Grand Vizier, creates a holodisk containing the schematics on Vader’s anatomy.
It is here that we learn how bounty hunter assassin droid IG-88 was able to track down Vader and temporarily have the upper hand on him during their fight in the last issue. It was Moore and her fellow conspirators who provided the assassin droid and his army of droids with the disk.
Toward the end of the comic, we are left off at the part where IG-88 meets with Moore and her followers. The droid tries to terminate his bounty contract since Vader defeated him during their last encounter. Much to Moore’s horror, Vader sneaks behind IG-88 and slices the droid with his crimson-colored lightsaber. Moore and her followers flee from the Sith Lord while they try to kill him. Moore also tries using the same mechanism IG-88 used to defeat Vader but ultimately, Vader overpowers her.

With no choice and admitting defeat, the Umbaran bargains with Vader by mentioning the Crimson Dawn invitation to the auction of Han Solo and also how Luke (who would not be far behind to rescue the smuggler) could potentially kill Vader. Sly makes a promise with the Sith Lord to purchase Solo for Vader so that the Sith could not only take Solo but also potentially fight Luke. The two come to a compromise on the plan. However, at the auction, things go south when Jabba the Hutt and his fellow Hutt, Bokku (who has allied with Vader) outbid Sly. The administrator is puzzled as to why Bokku, who is allied with Vader, is bidding against her. Ochi responds that it is the Hutt’s way to humiliate her and himself which in turn would expose her weakness to the Emperor. The assassin further explains that although Sly was very power with uniting her allies to defeat Vader, the Sith Lord is too powerful to let that happen. The end of this issue leaves off toward where “War of the Bounty Hunters no. 2” ended but with Vader inviting himself to the auction by force choking several Crimson Dawn guards.
As I mentioned before, the character of Administrator Sly Moore is very dangerous and shrewd. Greg Pak brought this character to life. Before the “Vader” comic, Moore was just a character who stood on the sidelines with a brooding expression in the “Star Wars” prequel films. Pak’s take on Sly Moore is a high ranking Imperial official who is an opportunist and a quick study. She is willing to do whatever it takes when an opening presents itself to execute her plan. She also is no push over when it comes to executing that plan by mentioning Luke Skywalker being the only person who could kill Vader and take his place. This shows that she is as much of a manipulator as the Emperor. In the end of the day, it doesn't matter who dies in the fight between Vader and Luke (who she may or may not know are father and son). One way or another, whoever dies, she would probably go for the killing bow.
I also like the direction Vader is going in this arc also. Yes, he knows that Luke is his son however, it seems that the Emperor wants to use that in order for him to have one less Skywalker to worry about. The Emperor is hell bent on manipulating Vader to kill Luke or vice versa since having an enforcer strong in the Force would serve his agenda. Especially if the Emperor was able to seduce someone as powerful as Anakin to the Dark Side. It will be interesting to see if Vader really is set on killing Luke or if this is just a ruse to get the Emperor off his scent of his own plans which involve having his son rule at his side.

The art by Raffaele Lenco and the coloring by Jason Keith played just as huge of a role as Pak’s writing did in bringing Sly Moore to life. The drawings of Sly Moore show the stark differences between her time as administrator in the Galactic Republic to her time as administrator for the Empire. When she was administrator for the Republic, she was wearing a silver, or lighter, gown while under the Empire, she was wearing an all black short trench coat with black slacks and boots. In addition to her clothing, Moore’s facial features are further darkened and chiseled, possibly to show her age throughout the 23-years she has been in service to Palpatine. But I also think that those additional lines and shading on her face make her far more brooding than she did in the prequel films.
Overall, the “War of the Bounty Hunters” arc has been the blockbuster of the summer that has rocked the Skywalker Saga in the Disney era. There hasn’t been such an arc since the Shadows of the Empire that has changed the landscape and expanded the Star Wars Universe. With the inclusion of Han Solo’s ex girlfriend Qi’ra, from “Solo: A Star Wars Story,” pulling the strings by gathering all entities in the galaxy, there is no way that it would be a “Star Wars” blockbuster without Darth Vader. Greg Pak’s post “Empire Strikes Back” Vader is ruthless, determined, and cold-blooded. From what I read, he knows that he cannot take on the Emperor alone but he also knows that Luke could very well defeat him. With that, Vader has no choice but to kill Luke or at least defeat him enough so that he could have one less potentially powerful enemy to worry about. Or, as I mentioned before, Vader is likely playing possum and secretly wants to have Luke at his side (which he actually does) so that they can overthrow the Emperor.
