everything’s gonna be cool this christmas
the holidays are weird and you’re stressed out and hardly in the mood to singalong to rudolph the red-nosed reindeer with your sticky baby cousins. but you kind of dig the lights and the presents and the vibe. so, for your love/hate relationship with the christmas creep, here’s a december jam for every day of christmas
1. Eels -  Everything’s Gonna Be Cool This Christmas
really good if you’re into singalong choruses but are ambivalent about expressing unironic enthusiasm
2. Sufjan Stevens -  Christmas in the Room
youtube
play this while getting ready to go to your auntie’s house and wishing you could trade tinsel and trees for TV and vague melancholy experienced next to the person you dig
3. Vampire Weekend -  Horchata
someone put in the effort of providing the lyrics to this song, denying me the opportunity to discuss how i only understand 2 or 3 lines of any pre-VW Vampire Weekend song. this one is about drinking horchata and some girl in ralph lauren, probably.
4. Braids - December
this one’s a real downer but braids tuck beautiful, heartbreaking lyrics under cool slinky beats, so you can play this for your friends without worrying about it being a warning sign
5. Regina Spektor - December
can’t you see all this love can’t you see all this love? like, true. stop ruining the holidays for everyone and pretend to enjoy the quiche.
6. The Long Winters - Christmas with You is the Best
for you & bae’s anti-social sexually charged adulthood christmas. you shouldn’t date penis-havers who call their dicks “presents” but you should definitely (re)watch the O.C. instead of working on homemade gifts. it’s called Amazon.
7. Ron Sexsmith - Maybe This Christmas
youtube
ron sexsmith is your cool Canadian cousin’s favourite sad older male musician. you should play this during your family dinner and they’ll stop talking about how they voted strategically and give you like, a slight nod in acknowledgement, which is a honestly nice change
Frightened Rabbit - It’s Christmas So We’ll Stop
maybe christmas will stop you from arguing with your family, even if it’s just because there’s food in your mouth.
Joni Mitchell - River
youtube
this is like a cool version it’ll take people a little while to recognize, which will give you time to send a text message or pour leftovers into a tupperware, if you’re quick. it might make the people in your family think you’re into jazz, which could be really bad.
The Pogues - Fairytale in New York
i really hope this song isn’t offensive or anything because i can’t understand what the singers are saying, but it sounds christmassy in a drunk way, so christmassy.
Roberta Flack - I Can See the Sun in Late December
this is just a twelve minute jam tbh any excuse to make people listen to it. your mom will like it because there aren’t any cuss words.
7. Paul Baribeau - Christmas Lights
youtube

5 Things I Learned from Jagged Little Pill
I was visiting my relatives in Vancouver, and I was about 4. I distinctly remember that one night, my cousins wanted to play card games I didn’t know how to play because I was like...4, so instead I retreated to the living room full of my cousin’s CDs. She had a vast collection - more than Pandora has to offer. That was when I first discovered Jagged Little Pill. I asked my cousin if I could have it, and to this day, I still have my cousin’s copy of the CD..which has been well used (There’s a pizza pop stain in the lyric booklet).
There are only a few albums I revisit yearly, and Jagged Little Pill is one that I come back to again and again. It’s as old as I am, but the tunes have aged so well. There’s so many things in the “freaked out, greasy, angry” part of me that just instantly connects with the album.
All I Really Want
And all I need now is intellectual intercourse//a soul to dig the hole much deeper
One of my biggest fears is that I will like...settle because of the fact that I have this other equally huge fear of being alone and lonely and failing; but it’s like...there’s no pinnacle, no peak, no end goal.
youtube
You Oughta Know
Is she perverted like me? Would she go down on you in a theater?
It’s okay to be bitter and resentful just like...let it out so you’re bitter for two days not two decades, you know?
Perfect
I’m doing this for your own damn good//you’ll make up for what I blew//what’s the problem? Why are you crying?
It’s like you’re constantly trying your best not to care about what your parents want for you cause you’re trying to carve out your own path but it’s like you don’t want to disappoint them so you just nod obediently but break the rules anyways and when they find out you’re just going to deny it and that’s an okay thing to do because you love them.
youtube
Hand in My Pocket
I’m lost but I’m hopeful, baby
No one knows what’s up.
Not the Doctor
I don’t want to be responsible for your fractured heart and it’s wounded beat
Your problems are not my problems lol like call me when you’re out of your funk and want to ~party~

A Playlist For Cancerians
Ryan: i went to see an astrologist who told me that cancers are deeply emotional, indecisive, and temperamental - our moods change quickly waves in the sea. we are known for the our loyalty and compassionate ways, and although i facetiously tried to make a joke out of it all i was crying on the inside because it’s so fucking true.
youtube
1. Amy Winehouse - Tears Dry on Their Own
“I cannot play myself again / should just be my own best friend / not fuck myself in the head with stupid men”
you’re so fucking inconsolable for those couple of days that you’re annoying to every single person. the only person who can get you out of your funk is yourself, and it might take hours, days, maybe a week, but you know it’ll be fine, and that it was really nothing.
youtube
2. Bjork - Alarm Call
“I’m no fucking Buddhist, but this is enlightenment”
you’re always trying your best to comfort people when you really just want to grab them by their ears and shake them till they snap out of it. you’re compassionate, but your patience is thin.
3. Washed Out - It All Feels Right
“Close my eyes / Think about the old times / What’s it all about? / The feeling when it all works out”
hedonism - the belief that pleasure is the primary intrinsic good
youtube
4. M83 - Graveyard Girl
“She collects crowns made of black roses, but her heart is made of bubble gum”
everyone thinks they’ve got you pegged cause you look like you wear your heart on your sleeve, but there’s a few tricks still left up there.
youtube
5. Pixie Lott - All About Tonight
“Yeah the night is alive / you can feel the heartbeat / let’s just go with the flow / we’ve been working all week”
indecisive about all aspects of your life...so you just live in the moment and play it by ear cause you know you’re fucked anyways.

🏠 is where the ❤ is: a playlist
chim: for relationships that feel like taking your bra off at the end of the day, like sweatpants that somehow make your butt look super good, still like firecrackers and candlelight sometimes but more often like spitting toothpaste into the same sink as someone else like “gross. i could do this forever”
Slow Show - The National
youtube
i want to hurry home to you / put on a slow show for you and crack you up  this party’s fine but you get sleepy after three beers and all you want to do is be boring with your favourite person in the world.
Favourite Colour - Carly Rae Jepsen
youtube
cause when i’m close to you / we blend into my favourite colour you’re like, hot and amazing and smart by yourself, but they make you even better, your best version of yourself. plus i’m a sucker for love songs with built-in confetti cannon cues.
Sidecars - Kathleen Edwards
youtube
you and i will be sidecars / there to chase down the hard stuff you’re each other’s biggest cheerleaders. you make them ice cream floats and force them to take study breaks and the only evidence they need to believe that debra is a bitch is you telling them how she was a bitch to you.
Who Is It - Björk
youtube
his embrace: a fortress / it fuels me and places a skeleton of trust / right beneath us / bone by bone, stone by stone i found out recently that a bunch of people think this song is about a god which, i mean, okay, but it’s way cuter if it’s about some amazing person who’s bony and always there for you.
This Must Be the Place (Naïve Melody) - Talking Heads
youtube
i come home - she lifted up her wings / i guess that this must be the place love is weird, and sometimes you feel like three kids in a trench-coat pretending to be a grown-up, grasping for the right things to say, make it up as we go along. but there you are, weird and chilling and crazy about each other, so you must be doing something right.

Suburban Love - A Playlist
I mean Lionel, T-Swift, and Whitney might get you but like...snap out of it...your love life isn’t interesting enough to be a movie or a YA novel.
youtube
1. Ingrid Michaelson - Let Go
“I never know what to do with my love / I never know what to do with my hands / So I’ll put them behind my back”
You Belong With Me is one of my favourite Taylor Swift songs...and when I was in 8th grade, many girls, and boys like me would sing it anthemically while thinking to ourselves, “Yes...this is me...this song is...me in 3 mins”.  In reality, you know better than to whine and pine and shit on your object of affection’s object of affection. You don’t know what to do with your love, so you just tuck it away until the timing is right, or scrapbook it when it’s time to move on.
2. Lorde - 400 Lux
“I love these roads where the houses don’t change / Where we can talk like there’s something to say”
I think love songs are more dramatic than they need to be. Don’t get me wrong, I love a good love ballad in a John Hughes movie, but sometimes it’s the simple act of someone getting you an orange juice or warming the car while you wait inside that just does it. It’s not always going to be *kissing under the light of thousand stars or atop of the Eiffel Tower* fantastic, but maybe the whole...holding hands while you drive in his like...toyota camry through your paper town that makes you feel like a million bucks.
youtube
3. Carly Rae Jepsen - Let’s Get Lost
“Baby, let’s go get lost / I don’t wanna let you go / Keeping my fingers crossed that maybe you’ll take the long way home”
Applying for like school and jobs and learning how to pay taxes and like cooking and laundry and setting up your own appointments to see your doctors and your financial adviser and you just have no fucking clue what to do and how to adult and there doesn’t seem to be an end but they don’t know either and you’re not alone. Knowing that gives you some direction?
4. Counting Crows - Accidentally in Love
“What’s the problem I don’t know well maybe I’m in love / Think about it everytime I think about it can’t stop thinking about it”
Sometimes without rhyme or reason you just meet someone who like shits on your whole life. You’re like completely obsessed with them and it’s like irrational and crazy. And like when you’re around them you do that thing where you try to impress them with like...your own word vomit? Also, this song is SO SOOOOO good.
youtube
5. Lykke Li - Little Bit
“I would do it / Press the button / Pull the trigger / Climb a mountain / Jump off a cliff cause you know, baby, I love you I love you, a little bit”
Be cool about it, man.

Girls Like Girls Like Boys Do: A Playlist
sometimes it’s powerful, and necessary, to imagine queerness into songs where it has not been placed explicitly: listening to taylor swift cover songs by straight male signers and not change the pronoun while you scroll through pictures of her with karlie kloss and chew your finger nails. sometimes you have to make mirrors out of stained glass windows.
sometimes a song is powerful and brave enough to be particular to that particular way that girls who love girls love girls, that mix of admiration and adoration, that fuzzy affection, #lifegoals or #wifegoals, a political rebellion that feels much more like butterflies and angst.
sometimes you feel like feeling these feelings to synth-heavy pop music instead of the Indigo Girls. and you always need to dance.
My Kind - Hilary Duff
youtube
i let my walls come down tonight will let you waste my time
i think you’re one of my kind. don’t care if it’s all a lie. i let my walls come down tonight. bicuriousity has been disregarded as problematic straight girl activity of the i kissed a girl bullshit tradition, but so many queer girls have explored that title on evenings that sound just like this.
I’m Not Gonna Teach Your Boyfriend How To Dance With You - Black Kids
you are the girl that i’ve been dreaming of ever since i was a little girl
Cool for the Summer - Demi Lovato
got a taste of the cherry i just need to take a bite
youtube
demi doesn’t use any pronouns, opting instead for you and i, but putting a dude in the official music video (which is why we’re going with the lyric video, obv) does not un-gay a song. it’s gay! it’s like, the gayest thing ever, really! it’s played at every gay dance party i’ve been to in like three months. we’ve claimed it. it’s ours now. sorry.
Body Work - Tegan and Sara
can i take all the steps i’m planning tonight without risking it all? (i get shy)
(i know, i know! but duh!)
Girls Like Girls - Hayley Kiyoko
youtube
girls like girls like boys do nothing new
i first heard of her on the most embarrassing show in the world (which she is briefly on and which i love). i’ve been sending Hayley Kiyoko’s This Side of Paradise EP to every queer girl i know on the strength of this song and it’s refreshingly straight ahead sapphic chorus, and again, doubly, once this incredible!!! video came out. this song is so good! fuck.

Soundtrack To: Sailor Moon
Ryan: I watched a lot of Sailor Moon growing up. In fourth grade, I would come home after school and watch Mona the Vampire at 4 and Sailor Moon at 4:30. Both shows were excellent (there was an episode of Mona the Vampire where Mona defeats Sam and Ella from this food distribution company who are supplying their school cafeteria with spoiled food - like Sam and Ella? Salmonella? Brilliant.)
Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh were also very big; but for some reason, I thought Millennium Crystals were cooler than a Pokedex or a Duel Disk or a Beyblade. Here is a 5 song soundtrack that I’ve curated that tries to make sense of what you watched when you were 10.
youtube
1. Little Mix - Black Magic
Take a sip of my secret potion / one taste and you’ll be mine
As much as I have a fondness for boy bands, I’ve always thought Girl Groups had better, more special powers. Like actually. I think I thought the Spice Girls had superpowers. Much of that probably had to do with watching so much Sailor Moon.
youtube
2. Spice Girls - Stop
Take or leave it cause we’ve always got each other
Blossoming romance occurs in most Magical Girl stories. Serena was boy crazy and a hopeless romantic. Tuxedo Mask was always there...but he didn’t really do anything. And that’s what most of the male characters in the series did - nothing (except Wise Man).
youtube
3. Rihanna - Cheers (Drink to That)
Don’t let the bastards get you down / turn it around with another round
When they weren’t in uniform, they were baking or studying. CELEBRATE, GIRLS. YOU JUST DEFEATED THE DARK KINGDOM.
youtube
4. M.I.A. - Warriors
You’ve got me fired up / sound boy got me back up / I keep my head down beat it up beat it up beat it up
We all keep forgetting that these girls are reincarnations of Princesses who were the Queen’s soldiers. I would say they were indeed ‘Warrior Princesses’, but Xena exists in a different world.
youtube
5. Azealia Banks - BBD
Flossin’ on them haters
Sailor Moon said some pretty cheesy stuff - but it all really important stuff about not letting people make you feel inferior, or not breaking girls’ hearts, and not breaking the dreams of impressionable children. They also defeated their enemies in high heels.

Chronicling My Obsession with a Boy Band  - A Ten Song Retrospective // A Playlist
Ryan: I’ve fallen in love many times. I’ll just leave it at that. Like my Taylor Swift post, I’ve paired ten songs from One Direction’s 5 year career with 10 other classics - they’re alike in mood/sound/not necessarily lyrically - so please!
youtube
1. What Makes You Beautiful // Christina Aguilera - Come On Over (All I Want Is You)
I don't know why you're being shy, and turn away when I look into your eyes // I know you know/so baby don't pretend you don't keep me guessing with you
I was first introduced to One Direction during Senior Year of High School by a friend of mine. We were in Economics class together, and we went to the computer lab to work on a research paper. She kept telling me how in love she was with this boy band, and she showed me the music video. She had watched all their X Factor performances, and she liked Harry the best. I mean, they were cute, nothing too special - at least that's what I thought at the time. Yeah, the song was catchy, and it gave me strong Grease Lightning vibes. I didn't think too much about them - they looked like they were 12, even though they were older than I was. And I probably looked like shit. They were too clean cut for me. That's what I said.
2. One Thing // Joni Mitchell - A Case of You
Get out get out get out of my head, and fall into my arms instead // You're in my blood like holy wine /you taste so bitter and so sweet / I could drink a case of you, darlin'
I definitely misspoke. I soon fell in love with all of them, even Louis. Zayn was mysterious and misunderstood, and I just wanted to hug him. Harry was a baby angel sent from above. I wanted Niall to be my surrogate brother, and I wanted MY Liam to be MY boyfriend. Louis could officiate our wedding when we were mature, and ready for that type of commitment. Louis was reliable for stuff like that.
3. Tell Me A Lie // Kelly Clarkson - I Do Not Hook Up
Tell me I'm a screwed up mess / that I never listen / tell me you don't want my kiss / that you need your distance // So if you want me I don't come cheap / keep your head in the clouds, your heart on your sleeve
It soon became an issue; I would scream every time they came on the radio, I scrolled through Tumblr reading fanfic upon fanfic. I would imagine best case scenarios and figure out ways for me to meet them - I wrote fanfiction myself, recorded a rap video for a contest to meet them, bought all their merchandise, mapped out an imaginary singing career.
youtube
4. Kiss You // Simon and Garfunkel - Cecilia
If you don't wanna take it slow, and you just wanna take me home, baby say 'Yeah!', and let me kiss you // Oh, Cecilia, I'm down on my knees / I'm begging you please to come home!
My first semester of University was a blur; I didn't really know what I was doing. I was in class and sad and my friends were even more sad than I was. I would spend hours at the library listening to One Direction trying to understand Microeconomics and write papers about derivatives - all those things just didn't match up. I would spend my study breaks watching YouTube videos of my boys - learning about their fears, watching Niall try Vegemite, Harry and Louis fondling each others' balls, and hour long clips of Liam doing Skype Q&As. SPOONS, Liam? What the f-?
5. Heart Attack // Stacie Orrico - Stuck
Never thought it'd hurt so bad getting over you / you're giving me a heart attack looking like you do // I can't take it, what am I waiting for? / my heart's still breaking / I miss you even more
I worked at a retail store that year, and my coworkers thought I was crazy. They knew me as "the biggest One Direction fan they knew boy or girl". I would walk into work and my managers would ask if I had watched them on Ellen. I was quizzed on their favourite colour - Liam’s is purple. Asked what I would do if I met them. I was never embarrassed though - I relished the fact that I was the biggest fan that they knew. I would work, and then go home and watch the Up All Night Tour on DVD just to make sure I knew I was a big fan.
6. Better Than Words // Mariah Carey - Always Be My Baby
Better than words / more than a feeling / crazy in love / dancing on the ceiling // You'll always be a part of me / I'm part of you indefinitely
*The lyrics to Better Than Words are all song titles to other love songs
I can always count on my boys to release a new record every year.
But something changed my second year of University - I was more focused; I was finally working towards my major. I was writing resumes and drafting cover letters. Going to 3 interviews a day, and learning about accruals in basically every class. Midnight Memories played on repeat like a never-ending soundtrack as I studied: learning the words, the geetar solos, and Liam's solos as I learned about Linear Programming and Management Theory. I would buy shit sandwiches at my faculty building's cafeteria (A Bacon Ranch Club should not have more than 50% lettuce, FYI), because I was so focused on trying to do well that I forgot to eat.
youtube
7. Story of My Life // Mumford and Sons - Little Lion Man
I leave my heart open but it stays right her empty for days // Weep for yourself, my man / you'll never be what is in your heart
The boys were "taking creative control" - I mean, sure; but, I wasn't digging it. I still listened to their music, watched their movie in theatres in 3D, and cheered for them when everyone booed them at the VMAs. I still loved Liam like all my other celebrity boyfriends., but it was time to face the facts: that the boys and I were growing apart naturally. They were into blow, and I liked puff.
youtube
8. Steal My Girl // Monica and Brandy - The Boy Is Mine
Everybody want to take her heart away / couple billion in the whole wide world / find another one cause she belongs to me // You seem to be confused / he belongs to me / the boy is mine
The boys pulled me back in with this track, and I listened to Steal My Girl a hundred plus times until the melody physically made my body ill. It happens often with me; I just need like to not listen to the song for a week, and then I will have built my tolerance back up again.
9. Girl Almighty // Billy Joel - Uptown Girl
Her light is as loud as many ambulances as it takes to save a savior, oh! // And when she's walking she's looking so fine / And when she's talking she'll say that she's mine
*The Westlife version of Uptown Girl is, in my opinion, better.
When I learned that Zayn was leaving, I immediately thought ~Geri Haliwell~; it was sudden and unexpected - but expected...really. Of course I was sad. I mourned for a day. I was upset for the entire fandom. My boys would never recover. They would finish the tour, record and release their last album and go off on their own, just like the Spice Girls. I just needed to accept that.
10. Change Your Ticket // Janet Jackson - Someone to Call My Lover
You should probably stay, probably stay a couple more days / come and let me change your ticket home // Maybe we'll meet at a bar / he'll drive a funky car / maybe we'll meet at a club / and fall so deeply in love
I just went to the One Direction concert - a dream come true. Liam and Harry both waved and winked at me. I was told by security to stop being so rowdy. I fell in love a thousand times over. Ba(Liam)by, I will stay, will stay for a couple more days - at least until your guys' contracts are up.
Thanks, and don’t think less of me.

Songs That Remind Me Of: My Parents
Ryan: My parents never sung me lullabies or bought my brother and I Raffi CDs. They exposed me to popular music probably the second day after I was born. It never occurred to me that The Piano Man and Big Bird existed for two separate groups of people to enjoy.
Here are five songs that remind me of parents (mostly because these are songs my parents and I like):
youtube
1. Simon and Garfunkel - The Sound of Silence
There are some songs that you just know. You don’t know why you know them, but you know that there doesn’t exist a world where you do not know that song. They’re the song you don’t fully listen to until you’re like 15, and the words just come out of your mouth like vomit.
2. Don McLean - American Pie
Madonna starred in a movie twice, and for one of them, she did a cover of American Pie. I was like 5 when it came out? and I remember my Dad really being into it. At that age, I thought it was embarrassing that my Dad liked the same stuff I did, until I understood why, and that it was a cover. I hope he doesn’t find it embarrassing that I like the same things he does.
youtube
3. Carpenters - Top of the World
My Mother thinks Karen Carpenter is really cool. She was gifted a Greatest Hits compilation one year, and I remember her playing the record as she cleaned the house on Sundays. Me and her both think Karen Carpenter has the loveliest voice; I can’t describe how lovely it is, it just sounds like ‘Mom’.
Also do any of you remember that episode of The Simpsons where Marge buys a doorbell that plays, “Why do birds suddenly appear, over here, over there” - I swear I am not making this up??
4. Bread - Make it With You
I share my Dad’s love for embarrassing, cringe-worthy love songs. I still remember my Dad buying ‘The Best of Bread’ at HMV because he wanted to reminisce in the car.
youtube
5. Bee Gees - How Deep is Your Love
One of my Mother’s favourite movies is Saturday Night Fever. She has admitted to seeing it in theaters more than once - something I would never do. They would play the movie on late night Saturday TV (that joke was not intentional), and I remember watching my Mother groove to the soundtrack as my aunts and uncles played mahjong - the click clacking of the tiles as soothing as the sounds of the rain forest. In between commercials, we would flip to Fox and watch America’s Most Wanted.
Screw you, summer courses.

“I Haven’t Seen So Much Love in One Room Since Narcissus Discovered Himself”
Ryan - I was in third grade, and I took out a book from the library on Greek Mythology; more specifically, I took out this beautifully illustrated anthology. I learned a lot from these stories - polygamy, incest, rape, the characteristics of a hero, why spring comes and disappears, cannibalism, and why we hate this girl Pandora.
And I wonder, what kind of music would these Gods and Monsters listen to?
Tumblr media
The story of Narcissus - a boy who was so in love with himself, that he was tricked into falling in love with his own reflection in a river, and drowned not knowing it was merely an image.
Fast forward to 2015, I think Narcissus is an ex-club kid. He’s sexually fluid, vivacious, and promiscuous. And probably spends hundreds of dollars a year on facials.
1. Lady GaGa - The Fame
“I can’t help myself! I’m addicted to a life of material”
Narcissus gets a weekly injection of botox here, there, and here. He wears giant Prada shades because his skin is still red from getting his eyebrows threaded.
2. Nicki Minaj - I’m The Best
“Tell them bitches get a stick I’m done leadin’ the blind”
Narcissus parties on the weekend but he can’t afford not to work. He’s an ad exec, probably. He’s good at his job - he’s a top.
youtube
3. Lana Del Rey - National Anthem
“And you can’t keep your hands off me or your pants on”
Narcissus lets you look but doesn’t let you touch.
4. Rilo Kiley - The Moneymaker
“They showed the money to you / you showed them what you can do / showed them your moneymaker”
I feel like Narcissus plays The Moneymaker while he’s looking at himself in a mirror - falling in love even though it’s merely an image. He also thinks he’s a movie star as he’s styling his hair and spritzing Dolce and Gabbana on his wrists.
5. Kanye West - POWER
“I don’t need yo pussy, bitch, I’m on my own dick / I ain’t gotta power trip, who you going home with?”
Narcissus is only envious of one person, and that person is Mr. Kanye Omari West.
This was a really weird post - sorry, but bear with me.

MV Spotlight - “I Hope No Bad People Show Up”
Ryan: I love music videos. They capture childhood memories as vividly as home movies your Mom used to make you star in. One of my favourite motifs in late 90′s music videos is “The House Party” - kids with bad hygiene who are down with the man and who wanna break their friend’s parents shit while drinking budweiser. Something about rewatching these videos reminds me so much of a younger version of myself who was scared and excited to see exactly what I would become when I grew older.
youtube
Beastie Boys - (You Gotta) Fight For Your Right (To Party)
Yeah, like a good party maybe has a cheese plate and plenty of ice; but I’m not in a business suit so where is the kid in his birthday suit (or in my case, where is the guy who’s casually taking a shower at a party)?
youtube
Janet Jackson - Go Deep
Unlike house party scenes in a CW TV show, these videos aren’t about making John jealous by going to the party with James, and trying to fight Jessica if she crosses your path; it’s about looking fine and telling T to call Shawn, because you all are going to get your groove on. And maybe you’ll break a few lawn chairs.
youtube
The Smashing Pumpkins - 1979
One of my favourite videos of all time. It’s the perfect summation of what I thought my teenage years were going to be like: driving down flat roads from nowhere to nowhere, getting a blue slushee at a 7-11 at 11 pm, renting a video from Blockbuster on a Saturday night, going to a house party in the Valley that’s going to get broken up in half an hour, TP-ing the principal’s house, stealing the hood ornament off their car. Sadly, and fortunately, my teenage years were less destructive and more exciting; but at 5, I thought the kids in these music videos were the coolest.
youtube
Jimmy Eat World - The Middle
I won’t get into a whole thing about that time when I thought I really liked Jimmy Eat World, and I would just listen to Bleed American (long story short, I really wanted to like a rock band, and I thought I could get away with liking Jimmy Eat World - I do like Jimmy Eat World, don’t get me wrong, but like only Bleed American).
The music video’s sweet though - sometimes the most fun party isn’t the one everyone is at. And sometimes (although probably not all the time) partying is a lot more fun with your clothes on.
youtube
Tove Lo - Habits (Stay High)
This video isn’t a house party, but every house party has a destructive girl/boy falling on themselves, and plenty of girls kissing. As I grew up, I found that the party could be anywhere, it could be at a McDonalds, a park play structure, the basement of someone’s house, the basement of a building you thought was abandoned, a pub, a bar, an art gallery. But either way, sometimes you just want to down that fucking nasty jungle juice concoction someone mixed in their kitchen sink, and just let all the noise drown out. And that’s this video.

Five Songs to Bop To - June
Ryan: June is my favourite month of the year because it’s my birth month, but it’s also about being the gayest thing in the room, and these songs are no exception.
youtube
Kylie Minogue - Come into My World
you have your madonnas and your gagas and your chers that you pray to but kylie really is the closest thing to aphrodite that exists in the world right now.
youtube
Namie Amuro - Golden Touch
let’s forget that namie amuro was asked to “rap” left eye’s verse in a rerecorded version of waterfalls.
Miguel - Hollywood Dreams
i listen to miguel on the bus to work a lot and sometimes i forget that im not in some caligula porno (no link cause it’s fucking porn), and that im on the fucking bus going places.
youtube
Janet Jackson - I Get Lonely
velvet rope era janet is to me, the coolest janet. the entire record is a summer soundtrack.
youtube
Cristina Aguilera - Come On Over (All I Want is You)
let’s be honest for a hot second and just say that i GO HARD when this song comes on. it’s 5 year old me dancing in my underwear on a hot summer day, eating a pizza pop, and im colouring as i catch my breath.

Five Jams: June
i love summer and sweaty bodies in cut-off shorts and heart-shaped sunglasses, that thing white girls always with their hands on windows down road trips, music blasting. my favourite summer jams aren’t the frantic dance mixes, just the laid-back, pre-thunderstorm, too-hot-to-move tracks. here are five that have satisfied that popsicle perfect formula.
I Know There’s Gonna Be (Good Times) - Jamie xx (feat. Young Thug & Popcaan)
youtube
Jamie xx just went ahead and dropped a perfect summer album with In Colour. this is absolutely the standout track, a triplet of artists who work together way better than you might expect, the most unnecessarily and hilariously vulgar verses (i’m ride in the pussy like a stroller???? WHY???).
Trap Queen - Fetty Wap
this song is almost a year old but it’s basically perfect, i don’t know what else to tell you.
No Sleeep - Janet Jackson
youtube
definitely on the cool down half of the party playlist, or, even better, the car ride home, the breeze too cool on your sweaty foreheads, on your way to get some very excellent dick.
Sunday Candy - Donnie Trumpet & the Social Experiment
i listened to Acid Rap so much the summer it dropped that it’s possible Chance’s voice will always sound like late sunsets and excessive lounging to me. also i don’t know if a happier song than this exists.
Seven Days in Sunny June - Jamiroquai
youtube
i feel like i should be embarrassed to like jamiroquai but i don’t really get embarrassed and this is the prototype for a great hot weather bop. i don’t super know why they bleep out the word “bomb” in this song.
Bonus:
SUMMER SUNSHINE - THE CORRS
youtube
in the heHEAT OF SUMMER SUNSHINE i miss you like nobody else!! in the HEAT OF SUMMER SUNSHINE I KISS YOU and NOBODY NEEDS TO KNOW -- i mean, right?

Ten Song Retrospective: Björk
Björk has lived 100 lives. She’s a singer, songwriter, club kid, engineer, pornographer, Mother Nature, and many other one word descriptors. It’s very difficult for me to start talking about her and stop so...without further Adorn by Miguel, here are 10 songs from her catalog that I like personally, and that showcases Mom in all of her manifestations.
Big Time Sensuality (Post Tour live at Shepherds Bush, 1997)- "I don't know my future after this weekend, and I don't want to!"
“I immediately tapped into what she was trying to do on Debut - to create electronic music that at the same time was also soulful.” - Graham Massey
Big Time Sensuality is excessive. It's maniac, crazy, bag lady, pixie Björk with kupa buns wearing mohair sweaters, and collecting children like a Pied Piper. She screams like she's running from Everest to another Everest, and howls like she's trying to outdo the stereo system at a rave. She's devilishly grinning as she sings about how you need to let loose, take a break from your day job, and instead live on instinct and intuition.
Hyperballad (Post, 1995 dir. Michel Gondry)- "But when I land, will my eyes be closed or open?"
youtube
Hyperballad is the perfect synthesis of Björk's entire musical repertoire. It's a song that can take you to an emotional high immediately. A song that connects love, nature, and the world of spirits. Popular and avant garde. Upbeat but melancholic (she's singing how she has to throw herself off a cliff in order to feel safe with you), from one high to another. Interpolated with sounds and details you need to listen to 10 times before you can even try to understand it completely.
Possibly Maybe (Vespertine Tour live at the Royal Opera House, 2001) - "As much as I definitely enjoy solitude...I wouldn't mind, perhaps, spending a little time with you."
You're meh about him. You're feeling him. You're curious about him. You're smitten by him. You're crushing on him. You're in love with him. You're hurt by him. You're over him. All of it happens in 5 minutes.
Isobel (Biophilia Tour live in London, 2013) - "My name Isobel, married to myself."
Storytelling motifs are really only well executed in like country songs, but they mostly write like short fiction. Isobel writes as an epic saga, with star wars and elves and moths that send out a message.
Hunter (Homogenic Tour live in Cambridge, 1998) - "So I left you on your own to complete the mission. Now I'm leaving it all behind."
Homogenic is about a "warrior who doesn't want to fight with weapons, but with love". Hunter demands to be heard like a PSA from Big Brother.
Pagan Poetry (Vespertine, 2001 dir. Nick Knight) - "He makes me want to hand myself over."
youtube
Morse coding. Signals. They pulsate. They wake me up. It's all a metaphor. Pearl beads (like a literal cum shot in the beginning) adorn her dress. Shimmering clicks and microbeats  threaded together as elaborate as your grandmother's embroidery piece.  Unlike the rest of her songs about love, in Pagan Poetry she finally loses control of the situation - she screams in orgasm  2/3s into the song like???
Desired Constellation (at Live 8, 2005) - "How am I going to make it right?"
Björk (repeatedly) begs for fortune tellers, dice, the blessing from her ancestors, and the writings in the skies to tell her if she has the ability to maintain a family. And like...that’s a lot.
Declare Independence (Volta, 2007 dir. Michel Gondry) - "Start your own currency! Make your own stamp! Protect your language! Justice!"
Björk is that mom who has tattoos under her business attire, who makes brownies and blacks out on the weekends; who is ready to start a riot when everything is ~oh so quiet~.
Virus (Biophilia, 2011 dir. Andrew Thomas Huang) - "Like a virus, patient hunter, I’m waiting for you...I’m starving for you! My sweet adversary."
Biophilia is like BBC Planet Earth or a David Suzuki television series hosted by a “Miss Frizzle from the Magic School Bus and Vienne Westwood hybrid” Punk, with Sir David Attenborough as the Talking Head. It’s messed up and tragic and beautiful.
History of Touches (Vulnicura, 2015) - "Every single fuck we had together is in a wondrous time lapse."
The songs burns. If you're a long, devoted Björk fan, you know how much it hurts to have listened to a decade's worth of songs about love and family, only to be suddenly handed a thousand broken pieces.

St. Vincent: A Ten Song Retrospective
i Have A Lot of Feelings about St. Vincent as a writer, as a quietly queer woman, as a (far inferior) guitarist, St. Vincent is the pinnacle, she’s the top, everything those of us trapped in the suburban basements of bedroom towns aspire to.
after her 2014 eponymous fourth album just fucking wrecked everything, the newest, darkest, coolest version of the artist-performer St. Vincent was suddenly ubiquitous. this is the version that launched herself fearlessly into crowds, that won a Grammy, that was Kurt Cobain for a few songs, that i saw live in concert, standing in the front row spot i’d earned with my elbows, halfway to sobbing.
there are, however, a lot of versions of St. Vincent, that have evolved as her human counterpart Annie Clark has evolved, and everyone them has a place in my heart. here are 10 songs that name those places, and show exactly how she got there.
The Apocalypse Song (Marry Me, 2007) i guess you are afraid of what everyone is made of: time and light
this song, is in my humble and correct opinion, basically perfect. it’s also one of my favourite annie-singing-styles -- angelic but maybe a little unstable? somehow a little manic, under a sheen of airy perfection. a stepford housewife grinding bleached teeth.
Human Racing (Marry Me, 2007) your heart is a strange little orange to peel
youtube
performances like this beautifully illustrate both why Annie has been cast as the gross-indie-guy’s dream MPDG and why she should never, ever be.
What, Me Worry? (Marry Me, 2007) would you think me queer if while standing beside you i opted instead to disappear
Just the Same But Brand New (Actor, 2009) and i do my best impression of weightlessness now, too i might be wrong, i might be wrong, i might be wrong but honey, i believed i could
youtube
maybe about a break up, about being left, about being changed somehow, by something, so much but not really. there are one hundred words in this song, each of them chosen with painful precision and dangling in that gorgeous composition so breathlessly. i love this live performance of this song -- it’s warmer than the album version but somehow no less melancholy.
Surgeon (Strange Mercy, 2011) best finest surgeon come cut me open
youtube
i’m not going to get into how much this song feels like what it’s about but watching Annie play guitar live, like there’s a really talented demon inside of her, is absolutely the coolest
Strange Mercy (Strange Mercy, 2011) oh little one, i’ll tell you good news that i don’t believe if it will help you sleep
youtube
(live, she sings if i’ll ever meet the dirty policeman who fucked you up, hitting the substituted cuss word with enough venom you can pretend you know what the fuck she’s talking about.)
Year of the Tiger (Strange Mercy, 2011) oh america, can i owe you one?
lyrically one of my favourite St. Vincent offerings, on my favourite album of hers. she captures nervousness, as disease, as process, as personality trait, so beautifully, so perfectly, exactly the way the rest of us fretters would if we weren’t so busy wringing our hands.
Regret (St. Vincent, 2014) summer is as faded as a lone cicada cal memories so bright i had to squint just to recall
she performed this live and as soon as i recognized it i screamed a little and started singing along very loudly and she smiled at me :) i love this song :)
Digital Witness (St. Vincent, 2014) yeah
youtube
yeah.
Bad Penny (Big Black cover) i think i fucked your girlfriend once, maybe twice
