Rare 'blue supermoon' — the biggest and brightest full moon of the year — rises Aug. 30 | Live Science

The biggest and brightest full moon of 2023 will rise on Aug. 30, and its strange name deserves an explanation. Called a "blue supermoon," it is the result of three lunar phenomena happening at once.

The "blue" supermoon's name has nothing to do with the moon's color. In fact, it will actually be orange. The blue supermoon gets the first part of its name for a different reason: It's the second full moon in August.

There are two types of blue moon. The August blue supermoon falls into the first category: two full moons occurring in the same month. That's occasionally inevitable; a new full moon rises every 29.5 days. Given that the Sturgeon Moon occurred on Aug. 1, 2023, the Aug. 30 full moon will be a blue moon. Blue moons of this type, called "calendar blue moons," occur roughly every two or three years, with the next one occurring on May 31, 2026, according to timeanddate.

The second type of blue moon, called a "seasonal blue moon," describes the third full moon of four during one astronomical season. This occurs when a calendar year has 13 full moons instead of the typical 12. (A lunar year — 12 orbits of Earth by the moon — takes 354 days, while Earth's solar year is 365 days.) The next seasonal blue moon, which also happens every two or three years, will occur on Aug. 19, 2024, according to timeanddate.

So, where does the second part of the name come from? A supermoon occurs when the full moon is close to its nearest point to Earth in its orbit. The moon's orbit of Earth is elliptical, so every month, it reaches a closest point (perigee) and farthest point (apogee). Moons that come within 90% of perigee in a given month qualify as supermoons, according to Fred Espenak, an astronomer and former eclipse calculator for NASA.

August's second full moon is the third and closest of four supermoons in 2023. At 222,043 miles (357,344 kilometers) from Earth, it will be the biggest and brightest supermoon of 2023, though it will be only 20 miles (33 kilometers) closer than Aug. 1's full moon, which was 222,023 miles (357,311 km) away.

The next full moon will be the Harvest Moon, on Sept. 29. In addition to being one of the best-known full moons of the year, it's the last supermoon in 2023.

Comic Book Break: The Venom Symbiote

I grew up as a Spider-man fan in the 90’s, which means I (predictably) thought Venom was the coolest villain of all time. My Dad introduced me to Spidey’s ‘modern era’ shortly after Carnage first hit the scene, which means the Symbiote villains were a hot topic. As such, my first introduction to both Venom and Carnage would be in the pages of ‘The Amazing Spider-man’ #365, and boy did that issue leave an impression.

You see up to that point my fascination with the web head was moderately new, and I remained largely ignorant to the finer points of his lore. My Dad had just begun to re-discover comic books for the first time since his childhood, and this particular issue was a extra sized anniversary edition, replete with a holographic cover, character histories, and even a handful of bonus stories that were framed around various side characters who could reminisce about Spider-man’s classic tales. It was a handy way to bring new readers up to speed, and it worked well enough on my Dad (much to my approval) for him to continue collecting until the Clone Saga ruined everything. ASM #365 also featured this absolute BANGER of a poster by Mark Bagley. Check it out!

That image was seared into my brain, and two things became abundantly clear to me 1) Those villains were unequivocally, the greatest characters in modern literature, and 2) I needed to know why. Obviously I asked my Dad who those guys were, and he proceeded to explain the basic premise of the Symbiote suit and it’s history with Spider-man. Needless to say, I became obsessed with finding an issue, ANY ISSUE, that featured Venom and/or Carnage; I wanted to know everything about these guys. The only obstacle that stood between me and my goal was my age, as I was still quite young, and I think my folks were just the tiniest bit leery of exposing me to a characters who looked and behaved like, if we’re being honest, bloodthirsty hell demons (or brain thirsty, as the case may be).

As luck would have it, my dad found a pretty fair compromise in the pages of ‘Marvel Tales’. MT was a series that featured reprints of classic-or-topical spider-man comics from days of yore, often with new cover art by a current artist. Since the introduction of Carnage was turning heads towards the Spider-man books (also around the same time the comic book speculators boom was taking off) it was a prime opportunity for Marvel to reprint the issues of ASM that introduced the original symbiote creature (written by Roger Stern). So, my dad bought me several issues (pictured up top, and immediately below) to satiate my curiosity for another year before I finally got finally see Venom himself, and in the mean time I was simply delighted to be reading the origin story as I went.

Since those days, my interest in Venom has wavered dramatically depending on the project/medium/who’s writing him, and I’ve found much of what’s been produced fairly underwhelming; but my admiration of the design for Spider-man’s black costume has remained steadfast. If I’m being (perhaps heretically) honest, I almost prefer the black costume to the original. Something about it just feels so correct for the character, and clearly I’m not the only person who felt as much. Despite some initial push-back, the black costume had garnered enough support by the end of the 8-issue symbiote saga, for it to be brought back as just a ‘regular costume, but with the symbiote aesthetic.’ From that point on, it would feature regularly for several years before Venom officially inherited the look.

And just to be clear, no I wouldn’t ever truly want to replace Spider-man’s classic look, but you gotta admit, the black suit looks mighty slick.

340: Various Artists // Two Tribes

Two Tribes Various Artists 2019, Agogo (Bandcamp)

A double-LP mixtape/compilation from Hannover electronic label Agogo Records, Two Tribes “makes an effort to give insight in how [sic] musicians living in Europe today incorporate and transfer musical traditions particularly from the African continent into their oeuvre” (per the liner notes). Ostensibly, everyone here is either a musician living in Europe with African roots of some kind, or is a European musician collaborating with Africans, though in some cases what you get is just a Euro DJ using a few “tribal” sounding drum stems.

I had a lot of fun listening to the most ‘70s sounding funk stuff here and trying to guess how white the musicians were, but I was underprepared for the intensity of unpasteurized Funky Continental Guyness I was exposed to. Winners included guitarist Petri Kautto of Finnish-Beninese Afro-jazz combo Trio Toffa (pretty good), who strongly resembles Bill Nighy wearing a bucket hat with fake dreads attached to it, and Berlin’s slavishly authentic Afro-funk group Onom Agemo and the Disco Jumpers, who look like the S-Bahn Bloodhound Gang.

The compilation has what strikes me as a downright quaint (and very German) attitude towards the notion of cultural exchange that runs the risk of being pilloried for appropriation, but I’m sympathetic to it. Certainly, a collaboration like that between Zimbabwean mbira player Jacob Mafuleni and French DJ Gary Gritness that is neither explicitly “African” or “European” is by nature a more truly cross-cultural enterprise than Onom Agemo’s reverent homage or German DJ Elias “Agogo” Foerster’s vaguely Books-ish chops of African beat and vocal samples, but whatever. Influence is impossible to strictly regulate, and I don’t know that it’s even desirable to. White guys nerding out and riffing on the music of the cultures their governments currently oppress isn’t a problem—that their governments are oppressing those cultures, and that the scenes they operate within often have the taint of trickled down racism despite their utopian values, is. One hopes that Agogo and these musicians are cognizant of these challenges, even as they radiate a genuine and laudable affection for African music.

It’s worth noting that, while the European club sounds represented range from ‘90s style techno and 2-step to more modern forms of minimal house and bass music, the African face of the coin is almost exclusively defined by the funky ‘70s and ‘80s sounds that drive record collectors into quasi-sexual spasms. Being one of those guys, I don’t mind it aesthetically, but it’s interesting that the most contemporary-sounding piece is the 15-minute minimal house track “Just in a Moment to Find a Way to Sun Day” by Ivorian-born Hamburg DJ Raoul K. The centrepiece of K’s track sounds to me like a synthesized mbira, but he doesn’t feel the need to flag his music as African—perhaps because he actually is a young guy of African descent. Instead, he puts on a master class in using simple shifts in rhythm and dynamics to keep a room vibing in near perpetuity.

Anyway, as a mix, Two Tribes contains a lot of fine music and flows nicely. I dig Andrea Benini’s Francis Bebey-esque “Jawa” and the K track in particular, but nothing aside from Selma Uamusse’s anime-sounding “Mozambique (Ao Sul Do Mundo)” actively irks me. I’ve listened to Two Tribes a lot more than many other records in my collection that dig deeper, or make more powerful statements, because in the end, I just like the way it sounds.

👁️ EYE - what colour are their eyes? do people notice their eyes? is there anything special about them (shows emotion easily, literally magical…)?

Golden! And since their eyes are big, so people do notice them easily (but I guess that's also because asura heads are also usually big)... Also! They glow in the dark. 😏 It starts as soon as dawn/dusk/any slight darkening... (realistically they just reflect light but hhhh glowy eyes pog)

👻 GHOST - do they believe in ghosts? what are their “ghostly experiences”, if any?

They do! I mean yeah since ghosts exist in Tyria They did see some even when they were traveling the world, but the number of ghost sightings greatly increased in Elona (*coughs* The Desolation). They usually don't care/bother though so they don't have any experiences to speak of.

💥 COLLISON - what emotions do they have trouble dealing with?

Hmm maybe grief? Like... they can deal with it but pretty badly as they haven't learned to mourn properly since they never had the "chance".

😨 FEARFUL - when scared, do they go into “flight” or “fight”?

Fight! 💥 They're ready to throw hands at the slightest spook anytime.

🌙 MOON - what is your oc’s greatest wish? how far are they willing to go for it?

Hmmm I guess at the core of them, "be the wisest necromancer of all time" is the one. They almost straight up died for it once (days of starving in the prisons of Gandara just so they could learn necromancy from Joko), so yeah they're willing to go pretty far. 😈

🕷️ SPIDER - what is their biggest fear? do they have any irrational / mundane fears?

They're terrified of any kind/amount of memory loss. While some people may fear being forgotten, Gliaster fears forgetting.

Mundane fears, mostly...sand sharks! More specifically, getting jumpscared and eaten by a sand shark.

🌹 ROSE - do they like valentines day? have they been confessed to before? have they confessed to anyone before?

They don't really care for it; they love their beloved every 365 day of the year! Plus, they prefer surprises; affection and gifts are best when they're unexpected and not "ohh I bought you this because it's x day."

And yes to both! Gliaster is (Rick Astley voice) no stranger to love and has been on both end of confessions.

🌌 MILKY WAY - what was the inspiration behind your oc? what was the first thing you decided about them?

My inspiration was my love for Joko and Elona, which kickstarted breaking Gliaster out of the shackles of being the Commander and turned them into my 100% "original" character! But I remember the very first thing I decided about them was their gender.❤️ I looked at asura and went wow I want what they have. I instantly knew Gliaster would have none of any gender.

📣 MEGAPHONE - how loud are they? what do they speak like? got a voice claim?

Even though it sounds nice and appealing, their voice is quite high-pitched, which is something they're insecure about (and the older they get the more insecure they get as well). I do not have a spoken voice claim, only sung one, but it is Aneela Mirza! Some might know her from the 90's europop duo Toy-Box, lol.

🪤 MOUSE TRAP - what will always lure them into certain danger? a loved one in danger? a promise of something they are always searching for?

Oh yes, a loved one in danger for sure... But also some source of knowledge that is thought to be very valuable. They try to think rationally and be careful if a suspicion of a bait ever happens (knowing well they're not-so-liked in some areas) but god do their emotions and curiosity get the better of them sometimes...

👑 CROWN - what does your oc want to be remembered as? why?

Definitely the books they write post-Joko, which is something no one really has done before (especially not from Gliaster's POV, who knew Joko intimately for 10 years)

They also want to be remembered for their necromancer skills, because it's something they've honed all their life.

🎵 MUSIC NOTE - what is their playlist like? their favourite artists? do you associate a particular song with them?

N/A for the first part of the question, but yee I have few songs like that!

"Whenever Wherever" by Shakira is their theme song (like the lyrics "Lucky that I love a foreign land for / the lucky fact of your existence" is sooooo perfect)

"Dancing with the Dead" by Powerwolf is pog as well (The whole thing just inspires me to really turn them into the next expansion villain lmao)

And any song that comes from their voiceclaim! (especially non-english songs)

Not particularly want, but if it happened, they wouldn't mind... 😏 (They're not really a fan of cheesy stuff like that anyway)

Nope! They turn their back hardly, and if they do so, their back will be covered. They're prepared for everything because they believe that anything they have done (for example, treason and murder :^)) could also be done to them. And yes as mentioned, they would betray someone (and did before) but only by their own decision and not an outside control.

Zhàoliàngdēng/Lighting Lanterns and Its Divergence From Canon

hi, in this post i'm just talking about L2's differences when compared to the source material, Journey To The West!

1.) Aging

In JTTW, it's stated that 1 day in Heaven is equal to 1 year on earth. I always like the idea of celestial aging working differently from mortal aging, and Wukong is an immortal monkey, so he gets to deal with my bullshit.

Using @journeytothewestresearch's When Was The Monkey King Born?, I was able to create an approximate age for JTTW!Wukong!! It's as follows:

342 years old when Wukong crosses his name out of the Book of Life and Death. 100+ years as Great Sage. 10+ years as Bimawen. 49 years in the Trigram Furnace. 617-649 years under Five Phases Mountain. 27 years to go to and from India. ------------------------------------- 1,145 mortal years total, at least.

Now if I apply my celestial vs earthly aging here (and do 1,145/365), I get 3, which makes Wukong a celestial toddler lol. And that's not what I'm going for.

So then I went through a long journey of adjusting time differences and arrived here:

342 years old when Wukong crosses his name out of the Book of Life and Death. 90 years as Bimawen. 161 years as Great Sage. 49 years in the Trigram Furnace. 645 years under Five Phases Mountain. -------------------------------------------- 1,287 earthly years total.

Note: the 27-year journey is removed since I'm looking for his age at the beginning of the AU.

So, yeah. Rather than 1 day in Heaven being equal to 1 year on Earth, 5 days in Heaven are equal to 1 year on Earth. Here's the rest of the conversions bc mental illness (/hj). Big thanks to one of my Discord besties who did like all the math <3

1 Earthly Year = 5 Celestial Days 1 Earthly Month = 10 Celestial Hours 1 Earthly Week = 2.5 Celestial Hours 1 Earthly Day = 21.5 Celestial Minutes 1 Earthly Hour = 54 Celestial Seconds 1 Earthly Minute = 893 Celestial Milliseconds 1 Earthly Second = 15 Celestial Milliseconds

ANYWAY. With all that, I can do (1,131 E.Y x 5 C.D)/365 = 17.6301 C.Y, making Wukong about 17 1/2! So Wukong isn't a Grandpa Sun in the AU, as he's meant to be closer to the other MC's (Xiàhǎi) age... for reasons.

Note 2: there may be mistakes here because math is not my strongsuit... feel free to lmk lol.

2.) Plot/Characters

L2 doesn't quite follow JTTW; it's a bit more like Monkey King: Hero Is Back (2015) where a wandering child inadvertently frees Wukong and drags him into a heroic mess. This means there's no 27 year journey to and from India (at least I think lol), and arcs in JTTW may not be included or moved around (I'm in the process of reading the book, so I'm hoping to have subplots related to certain arcs or enemies!)

It also means Tripitaka, Bai Longma/Ao Lie, Bajie, and Wujing aren't going to appear as they do in JTTW—or at least I think. Xiàhǎi may fill Tripitaka's role (considering the plot isn't related to the scriptures), but as for the other three... I don't know yet! Maybe they'll come in different forms, or maybe I'll just do my own take on the three.

3.) The Circlet/Fillet/Crown

The metal band that goes by many names! So there's several methods to Wukong getting stuck with the circlet—being tricked into wearing it (book JTTW), wearing it as some sort of punishment (I think this is the case in Monkey King: Hero Is Back?), or putting it on himself out of curiosity (The New Legends of Monkey).

For my purposes it'll probably be a punishment thing because I am a sucker for arcs like the one in Hero Is Back... HOWEVER I think I'll still have it function like it does in the book with a command.

SO thanks to @/journeytothewestresearch and this article, the "Tightening Spell" (also called "Migrane Spell", "Tight-Fillet Spell/Sutra", or "Old Saying Sutra") is formally the Mantra of Akshobhya! Since it's long, I imagine the circlet responds immediately and lasts until the mantra is over.

But that's just the theory for now!

it's haechan hourrrrrrr and I already had this pre-noted so I'm putting in this entry early)

day 22/365 of haechan from niwaaaa

my favourite interactions/moments of haechan and wayv + sungchan and shotaro (with one exclusion)

kun - honestly there's not that many moments together - but i'd say when they almost lit the kitchen on fire is a pretty stellar moment. and kun thinks haechan is so precious. always very bright when talking about him. and haechan's little kiss for kun's hand. very cute. wish they interacted a bit more (on screen)

ten - honestly haechan's karma. the way ten reacts to haechan is always like....'damnit' but you can tell. haechan needs tough love sometimes. but 90s love era for this pair is all i need to point out. when ten comes from (i'm assuming the bathroom?) and haechan gets the whole group to clap for him. haechan and ten with the legend taemin himself. i honestly think ten is like a mentor role for donghyuck. i love their relationship.

winwin - THE FLEXIBILITY CHALLENGE. I don't know if i'm reaching or not but I feel like when haechan is the MC or taking an 'announcer' role of some kind, he relaxes and enjoys himself more? It's quite cute. I think my favourite thing is when winwin is describing haechan and his name for the audience. when winwin sits on haechan too. I think winwin finds haechan really comforting and opens up a little more for the shoot and I think that's really cute.

xiaojun - their risque dance with each other for the Citi Field Day thing! and xiaojun always refers to haechan with such a softness and like a little 'haechan!' and i think it's so sweet. high note loveliessssss. i think their interactions are quite limited for now? but i think that won't last long. i'm also basing this off on screen moments obviously.

hendery - I THINK THE AWSAZ VIDEO!! I was so happy when I saw them both on it. And the way they communicated, I enjoyed it. I really really enjoy it. Just as weird and as chaotic as each other. I think they have a lot of fun together and it definitely shows. I want more INTERACTIONS. I really do.

2023 Album A Day: Day 4/365

OK Computer • Radiohead

Favorite Track: Subterranean Homesick Alien

Thoughts: I wish somebody would’ve showed me Radiohead a long time ago; there is so much to this album that I absolutely love and I can see it’s impact in so many of the modern art rock groups I loved growing up. I can only imagine how innovative the futuristic sound must’ve been in the late 90’s, integrating elements of experimental EDM and digital soundscapes into its atmospheric progressive rock aesthetics to create something as alien as the subject matter of many of Yorke’s lyrics. I love the use of Microsoft Fred’s voice to layer in the artificial spoken word effect throughout the album. All in all, I see why this is considered by many to be the greatest record of all time, I wouldn’t argue with that opinion.

Sheepishly, the raven hands off a neatly wrapped and color present box. Every single one of his younger siblings had a part in the final product’s glamours appearance. Something nice and heartfelt for their “Big Sis” figure.

A cute looking sketchbook filled with Ryoko’s intricate, detailed, and vibrant drawings of various mythological beasts. Compiled from each sketch she drew all 365 days of the year. There’s even an adorable message at the end for Sijo’s eyes and Sijo’s alone.

Rei has made Sijo her own custom-sized Hikawa Jinja shrine robes tailored to her size and a collection of various good luck charms and flowers. There’s an even a jar filled with the soot of the Great Fire which has burned for thousands of years.

Minako’s gift… heavily contrasts Rei’s tamer one. Two bottles of an expensive and exclusive champagne, fresh strawberries dipped in a sweet white chocolate, and… lingerie from upcoming catalogs unreleased to the public. Wink wink~

Finally… RJ’s gift. One he clasps quietly into Sijo’s soft hands… A replica of the same ring Rei proposed to Minako with at the end of high school.

When the duo tied the knot nearly 20+ years ago. That same passionate bond which birthed him and his siblings with no signs of fizzling out. Whilst it may not fit around her fingers… It’s a testament to show just how much Sijo means to him. And how she’s changed his life for the better and is eternally grateful for it.

The Muffs The Muffs 1993, Warner Bros.

I was super late to discovering the Muffs—a power pop-knower friend of mine texted me when singer/guitarist Kim Shattuck died in 2019 that she was embarrassed to have only given the band a try after the news broke, and I probably replied some garbled thing that implied I knew more about the band than I did while firing off a search of my own. I immediately and completely fell in love with the band’s 1993 debut, and while I’ve sampled their other records, this is still the one I’ve practically committed to memory. The Muffs is a ‘90s pop-punk record so it has like 16 songs, which my vinylized brain insists means it must be a double album though it’s a trim 41 minutes—my mind does the same thing with Green Day’s Dookie and Rancid’s …And Out Come the Wolves, two albums I would say are about on a par with this one. Still, even if the songs are short, when a band can boast this many hooky, memorable gems on one release, it conveys the same sweeping sense of a band at the height of its powers I get from your London Callings and Zen Arcades: “Lucky Guy,” “Saying Goodbye,” “Everywhere I Go,” “Better Than Me,” “From Your Girl,” “Big Mouth,” “Baby Go Round,” “Every Single Thing,” “All for Nothing”… these all shoulda been hits to my ears. But then, to my ears they are.

Style-wise, the Muffs are chugging skater punk with a heaping spoonful of Weezer/Teenage Fanclub-style power pop in the mix. Rob Cavallo (a year out from turning Green Day into megastars) gifts this one with the kind of triple-A radio rock production that makes the alternative landmarks of the era such pleasures to listen to (and presents us with the bizarre paradox of a hi-fi Angry Samoans cover). Like Nevermind, Weezer (Blue), and Siamese Dream,the guitar tones alone are an absolute feast. They sound like a fictional band from the third season of Buffy the Vampire Slayer who all the characters agree is the greatest in the world after they start a residency at the Brass, only by the end of the episode Kim Shattuck turns out to be a horned, blue-skinned demon using a charm to steal the lifeforce of teenagers when they headbang. I love that, while she’s capable of a girlish sweetness, she never tries to hide her edge: even while she’s swooning pensively through the turbocharged sock-hop ballad “From Your Girl” she lets just enough grain into her voice to remind you that just a minute or two earlier, on the snotty “Better Than Me,” she was shrieking like Courtney Love eating glass.

I don’t really know why the Muffs never blew up, though they had a lot of membership turnover between this first effort and 1995’s solid Blonde & Blonder. But if you’re a fan of the sound and this somehow missed you too, I fully encourage you to put your headphones on and inject some extremely high-concentrate 1993 into your ear canals.
