Yeah! Asteroids! Asteroids from Asteroids! Can you believe the game was so popular that they launched a bunch of chunks of rock and metal into space to make them real? Fiction indeed affects reality! Asteroids was certainly an extremely popular and influential game. But what about the titular Asteroids themselves? Why doesn’t anyone talk about those Asteroids anymore? Let’s find out!

The whole deal with the Asteroids is that when shot, they break into more, smaller Asteroids. What can this mean for their physiology? Is this a marvel of rapid biological regeneration, something that can be studied to allow us to cheat death? It is not! They are rocks!

There are also even smaller Asteroids! They appear the exact same way. They’re really just asteroids. I mean it. Even I think it might be futile to try and find any Lore about them... but it won’t stop me from trying! Let’s look at the manual!

...Okay, I looked. There is really nothing. There are just asteroids, and the player shoots them. But check this out! Official art of An Asteroid, from one of the flyer! I like it. It’s a little bit cute, with its shape. It looks like the top of a muffin. A crunchy burnt charcoal muffin.

Really, Asteroids is just funny to me. It is named after the fact that there are Asteroids in it! You shoot the Asteroids! That’s all! Sometimes there is a UFO but this post is not about that. Pretend I never said there was a UFO. I wonder if any concerned parents considered this game to be violent. There is shooting and explosions, but it’s all Some Rocks. It’s too bad there was never a cartoon adaptation to anthropomorphize the asteroids... but I think it’s never too late for that! Asteroids and the Cosmic Adventures would surely get people talking about Asteroids again, which I don’t think they have been doing!

Asteroids as a game isn’t really much of a series or franchise, but it does have quite a legacy in games, inspiring a whole genre of monsters! It doesn’t really matter what kind of entity these enemies are, as long as they split into a bunch of tiny things when fought. I would say little Motley Bossblob counts as one of these, since it splits into lots of little blobs! And here, we see a unique aspect of some Asteroidslike enemies, where they can reform back into their bigger state, requiring the player to defeat as many little ones as they can when they have the chance! Maybe they will add this feature, in Asteroids 2. And then they will add it to real asteroids.

The moral of the story is, asteroids are nothing to be afraid of. In fact, they’re more scared of you than you are of them, with your species making a fun time out of destroying them! The next time you encounter an asteroid, just leave it be, and it will do the same to you. Don’t hurt it, but also don’t feed it! It could lead to the asteroid putting itself in danger, going right up to spaceships hoping the astronauts inside will give it some Cheez-Its. Respect them from afar!

System Layout: The Ilio System is a large and complex system. Counting stars, planets, moons, and asteroids, there's a total of 101 objects.

The Ilio System is divided into an Inner System, with four gas giant planets, the Pyri System with its planets and trojans, and an Outer System, with three gas giants on two orbits with associated coorbitals, and a distant dwarf planet.

The Inner Pyri System. This is your home in space. Note the prevalence of asteroids in the Arriprit Belt. What may look like clutter in the map view is actually vital early-space-program scientific targets, and refuelling infrastructure that can be used to climb out of Pyri's steep gravity well. Zhandar is a mid-size gas giant that can be used to provide powerful gravity assists, these trans-Zhandar trajectories are some of the most important in any deep space interplanetary mission. 

Zooming out to see the Outer Pyri System. Bifröst is a superjupiter. Its magnetodisk is visible as a dim rainbow ring in the night sky. Its enormous mass also makes it extremely useful for providing gravity assists. If you can get out to Zhandar, you can get out to Bifrost. And if you can get out to Bifrost you can go anywhere. Beyond Bifrost, but much less massive, is Sinacin-Glice.

Zooming all the way out, we can see the Outer Ilio System. Pyri is so small compared to its double-sun parent that it can support trojans, leading and trailing 60 degrees away from Pyri but in the same orbit. Beyond the destabilizing influence of Pyri are Oynag and its trojans, and the Tobalk-Turtlestar binary. There's also four dwarf planets in this part of the system.

Zooming all the way in, we can see the Inner Ilio System. These four giant planet systems are well placed due to their increased instellation from the Sun--Alkin and Kilna may even support life. Alkin's mass is almost the same as that of Jupiter.

Something funny I've noticed while playing in the Lancer game @xeansicemane is running is that I am the odd-man (woman?) out in our merry little band of misfits. I am the only one in the SRT without an interesting backstory and/or potentially mission threatening Dark Secret.

We have:

- Fern Tiramisu, the fancy rat who has a job on Hell's Gate in a record store that sells more drugs than records. Except this is merely their cover story, as they are really an operative working for the Union Intelligence Bureau, sent to Calliope on a Top Secret Spy Mission. They've also discovered that parts of their memory have been wiped - by them - and are now trying to recover those memories and figure out why they'd do that to themselves in the first place.

- Cassilda Halloway, the very large, very Stronk, practically indestructible crocodile lady who is a champion in Calliope's fighting scene. Her first, last, and favorite solution for any and all problems is "Imma punch it REAL hard." She's hiding out in the system specifically to get away from her family, a bunch of wealthy and influential fucks back in the Karrakin Trade Baronies. Complicating things is that her brother is also here, for reasons unrelated, and has fallen in with the Faith of the One Plumed in Golden Flame, the local Apocalypse Cult.

- Pearce Collartug, a hyena hacker enby who is practically a JoJo character. They pilot a giant snake-shaped Balor, spending most of every fight covering everything that gets close (and lots more besides) in corrosive nanite swarms. In the last session, we all found out that they also used to be a member of The Circuit, a renegade HORUS cell pirate ring run by Triple Point, a Legion Fork NHP (Fern: "It's a fucking WHAT?!") The Illegal Shape has currently escaped its box and is now doing lots of spooky horror movie shenanigans inside a big asteroid.

- Agarin Raankell, a genetically modified supersoldier dragon man hailing from Clan Thunder Skink, and if you think that sounds a little like the Clans from Battletech: you are absolutely correct. Apparently where he came from, someone generations ago found a Battletech source book about the Clans and went "Hey, y'know what would be awesome?" Probably the most stable and level-headed member of the entire SRT, which is hilarious if you know anything about the Clans, but it does make him the de-facto squad leader in most situations involving direct combat. Also, he's psychically bonded with all of us. Because of Reasons.

And then you have my character.

- Scarlet. She's an alcoholic fuck-up.

Personally, I'm fine with it. My design doc for her boiled down to "What if me, but Girl, and also mech pilot?" She's a grunt. A humble footsoldier. Currently License Level 2, and still piloting her Everest. If this were Battletech, she'd probably drive a Hunchback. She's here to fight and get drunk, because she's no good at anything else.

I just think its hysterical that I'm the only one here not doing A Bit.

... come to think of it, I'm also the only one who hasn't been gene modded to be a Funny Animal Person lol

I lowkey love Astrotrain and I was so happy to be able to actually get an opportunity to draw him (and Dead End as an extra).

But first of all, I would like to apologize that I couldn’t follow the themes exactly, as the mods made a mistake and sent the themes late after I already did the lineart. So I had to adjust this piece to be able to accommodate even just one of the themes there (Robogore out of the 4). Though I'm honestly gonna say it made this piece a little more interesting than what I originally planned, so it worked out better for me.

...But I also forgot to check your list of what not to put in the piece until just yesterday 😭, and I broke one of them. It was too late to change the piece unfortunately so I left it as is.

I hope you still like it anyway ;u;.

some in universe lore: all subxarclan cats hail from a moon that was destroyed by an asteroid! this resulted in a large amount of them falling onto the planet (not earth) the moon was orbiting and being scattered. theyre rebuilding their way of life on this alien planet now n_n

there are no cats already living on this planet and any outsiders encountered are also cats that fell from the moon! their neighbouring clans are called dustclan rustclan and gustclan but theyre not super important so i dont focus on them. but theyre colonies of different alien species

aaand for process stuff: i use the kris’ colorful kitties mod with these guys! characters are developed mostly based on in game events but i have full freedom to retcon or manually alter anything if i find it funny. a lot of it is developed with my qpp :3 we like to have fun we like to play and draw

The Black Marauder IIC

The "Black Marauder" is a horror story of a cursed mech. Over the years urban legend has built it up into some kind of extradimensional beast, a living machine that moves of its own volition, consumes the souls of its victims and strikes fear in all that come close to it. It emerges from mist and shadows to kill efficiently and mercilessly before disappearing once more.

So I know the story says it looks like an inner sphere MAD-3R, but the way it's described as looking "Off-proportioned" and "Too smooth, almost organic-looking" makes me think it's a IIC. That and it having "Teeth", which the IIC's array of chin-lasers could be mistaken for. It also has a tendency to oneshot mechs with PPCs to the cockpit, which only Clan PPCs have the damage to do reliably. It performs unusually well in smoke/fog (advanced clan sensors perhaps?). Maybe the pirates didn't recognize what they were looking at given they lived on the opposite side of IS space from the Clan invasion front. It's also black with bits of red, the paint scheme of a certain Wolf's Dragoons "mercenary company" (read: Clan spies roaming IS space) which would explain the lack of factory markings/serial numbers. The stories mention weird behavior and unidentifiable mechanical issues so it could've been left behind since it was a liability, stripped of insignia and left on a forsaken airless asteroid in some random uninhabited system to conceal the trail. That's just my pet theory, anyway.

This one was difficult for a different reason, not painting this time but being my first time working with greenstuff and sculpting/modifying a miniature.

The paint job itself was fairly quick because of the almost uniform coloration despite the number of steps: -Primed with matte black -basecoated with Night Scales metallic black (It barely shows up, there is a faint glitter in some spots but mostly it looks like a slightly lighter black.) -Heavily drybrushed with Rough Iron, a dark rust color metallic -Lighter drybrush with Gunmetal, grayish/silver metallic. at this point I thought it was too light/shiny so I went over some panels with matte black paint, keeping away from the edges I'd drybrushed. -Mars Red in the eyeholes. White on the lasers/cockpit later covered with Red/Green/Blue speedpaint. -Blood Red speedpaint over the "monstrous" bits. It disappeared into the black, until: -Gloss varnish over the speedpaint brought the red back out again. I wanted everything to be black but still have the monster bits to stand out texturally, the gloss makes them glisten nicely. -Anti-shine matte varnish on the rest. That still looks pretty shiny to me but what can you do (Vantablack miniature paint, anyone??) -The label says MAD-BLK in the Standard Galactic Alphabet. At some point I knew how to read/write it after it featured in Minecraft enchantments, though by now I lost that and had to look it up.

The sculpting was interesting. -Green stuff is tacky and sticks to my fingers when fresh, hard to apply to the model in a careful manner, but is pretty easily workable on the model, once it's on. At some points I used metal sculpting tools almost like chopsticks to avoid touching it with my hands. I twisted a pointed tool like a little drill bit to get the eyeholes in. -Getting closer to the 1hr mark it stiffens up and becomes the opposite. Easier to apply and get off my fingers but harder to work into the shapes I want and fit in the crevices for a good hold. -The claws are superglued given they're sticking out a fair bit. Roughed up the plastic surface before applying glue for a better bond. The other greenstuff I trusted to stay on since they were molded into the surfaces pretty closely. -The blood was red ink Speedpaint mixed with good old AK water medium.

I'll have to do more modding in future, truly customize my mechs.

Last Lance of Cardinal Sins featured a Zeus, only too late did I have the idea of modding a ZEU-X with the wing-like cooling vanes. Fortunately I have a King Crab waiting for me (my favorite mech!) to make a prototype KGC-010 with. It has flush-mounted dual PPCs with spiky cooling vanes sticking out the back. Should be fun.

How can you utilize these energies and ideas and celestial bodies in your craft? What kind of energies do they have? Learn as much about them as possible and think hard on how they influence your craft, if they do at all!

Research/ New Page - pick another herb and get at it! Learn everything you can about it! Magic, mundane, myth, history, how to grow and so on!

Tuesday - Black holes, supernovas, star types

Research/ New Pages - make a new page for each of these and research. What are the physical aspects of black holes and supernovas? Make a list of the different star types and what their aspects are. What makes them different? How can these be utilized in your craft, if at all. How can the simple idea of them, or using them as a metaphorical influence for your magic work? Are there any myths of legends related to these?

Research/ new page - pick a gemstone or tarot card or type of magic or whatever else you’d like to research and make a page for it! Learn everything you can about it!

Wednesday - Damned Retrograde?

Research/ new page - what does it mean when a planet is in retrograde? Is there an opposite to being in retrograde? Other movements or positions? Learn as much about this topic as you can and fill out a page for it!

Thursday - Astrological Aspects

Research/ New Page - Look into the aspects of the various astrological signs. Conjunction, Sextile, Square, Trine and Opposition. The aspects are the way your energies will play out within the signs, and the connections between two or more planets. Add the information you find out about these to each planet’s page. The more you understand about these, the more some of the world around you might make sense during the time of those signs.

Friday - Rest, catch up

Subcultures in general — once the poles of style and art and politics and music around which wound so many ribbons of teenage meaning — have largely collapsed. What teenagers today are offered instead is a hyperactive landscape of so-called aesthetics — thousands of them, including everything from the infamous cottagecore to, these days, prep. These are more like cultural atmospheres, performed mainly online, with names and looks and hashtags, an easy visual pablum. They come and go and blend and break apart like clouds in the wind, many within weeks of appearing. They have much content but little context — a lot to look at but a very thin relationship to any “real life” anything, like behaviors or gathering places. On one end, even a distinctly in-the-world subculture (like, say, grunge) can be reduced to a vibe packet of anodyne references (cigarettes, grimy things); on the other, a mere mood tone can be elevated to something offered as lifestyle (there are girls who enjoy the color red and a certain Euro effortlessness, and they are called Tomato Girls, while others who prefer white are called Vanilla Girls). If two dozen things on a Pinterest page feel as if they go together, chances are someone, even just as a lark or experiment, is calling it an aesthetic. For proof, you need only log on to Aesthetics Wiki, a wonderfully encyclopedic website for online style tribes. Here you will find not only large categories like emo, Y2K, VSCO, academia or the perennial goth but also categories so specific that their nicheness begins feeling like an Escher staircase of references. The roughly 200 aesthetics found under the randomly chosen letter M contain some that will be legible to many (Memphis rap, Mod), some that involve a kind of style-sensitive hairsplitting (Mallgoth, Messy French It Girl, McBling) and others that are just full-on W.T.F.: Meatcore is for people who appreciate raw meat as a nondietary object, and Monumentality is the appreciation of anything big, like Godzilla, Gothic cathedrals, giant redwoods or asteroids (“many asteroids are fairly large”). It’s hard to imagine a Monumentality meetup because, like so many aesthetics, Monumentality is only referential, its conversation ending right where it begins: Do you like this big thing? Yes, because it is big.

Titanian: Corpulent, furry human variant adapted to extremely cold environments; initially developed to better withstand the harsh conditions of Titan, Saturn’s icy moon, but have since spread to other frozen worlds; typically inhabit pressurized underground tunnel cities carved into the ice.

Spaceborne: Tall, lanky variant with prehensile feet and tails, optimized for life in microgravity; one of the oldest variant groups, created during the earliest days of the first interstellar age; designed to live aboard long-distance exploration/colonization vessels.

Rock Rats: Another early variant designed to live and work in the asteroid belt; short, stocky bodies built for navigating the narrow ducts, crawlspaces, and passageways common aboard mining vessels, as well as the labyrinthine tunnels of their hollowed-out asteroid homes; “rock rat” is a colloquial term, originally derogatory but has since been reclaimed.

Voidwalkers: Highly-modified variant designed to survive in the vacuum of space; originally created by a dubiously-ethical megacorp to serve as an orbital labor force; have since gone on to form their own society of nomadic spacefaring clans, offering their unique services to ships and stations in need.

Vamps: A collective of eccentric horror fiction enthusiasts who deliberately bio-modded themselves to resemble their favorite imaginary bloodsuckers; long-lived, sensitive to sunlight, crave the taste of blood; actually pretty harmless, as they tend to subsist on synthetic blood substitutes.

(Artist’s note: apparently its a weirdly common thing for vampires to inexplicably show up in otherwise grounded hard-sf settings, so I decided to jump on the bandwagon!)

SmartPets: Bipedal uplifted animals with trace amounts of human DNA, available in a wide variety of species; created and sold by a division of the same megacorp as the voidwalkers; designed to be the ultimate domestic companion; infamously advertised with the tagline “man’s best friend just got better.”

All the celestial bodies function as the players in your natal chart. The natal chart is a picture of the skies on the exact moment when you were born. Each celestial body was located in a certain place, and that placement determines the effects on your life. 

Every writer gets a random planet or asteroid assigned to them. Every prompt can be interpreted in your own way. You can base your fic on the planet or asteroid's general meaning and symbolism, a specific house placement, how the celestial body transits through the years etc. With the prompt list we will provide some sources for research.

There’s no minimum or maximum word count.

The theater is dark on Mondays and Conrad always lets Jones sleep in as late as he wants, but makes sure he’s there in bed when Jones wakes up to reassure him he isn’t late for call time (among other things)

The whole cast has incorporated the Spaceman song & dance into their warmup routine, with a different soloist each night

AstraX Dev Diary, December 2023

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays everyone!

I've been working on AstraX 0.4 really hard, but sadly couldn't finish everything before the holidays.

This update is mostly of technical nature and will allow more extensive features (e.g. better navigation and starmap).

The biggest changes affected the targeting/discovery system, graphics, spacecraft and spacecraft systems.

Metaphorically, these changes are like replacing the insides of a melon with the insides of a pomegranate and this took me almost two months of hard work to complete.

However, the result is a piece of software that is optimal for modding, user friendliness and adding more features, such as:

Usability improvements to Sector Map, Sonar (ergo radar mechanisms)

Being able to detect moving NPC alien spacecraft on your radar system that you will be able to trade with later

Being able to render planet and spacecraft graphics on the UI and HUD

Showing UI details for selected spacecraft

Discovery Mechanisms now work for any content added by mods

Furthermore, I added these features:

Better, remappable controls

Asteroid belts are now integrated into orbital structure of a star system

Junk metal belts that yield Scrap Metal as resource

Future Features

Features that I currently have in focus for future versions (+0.5):

Better orbit sectors featuring habitable zones which depend on spectral class of the central star

More discoverable traits for gaseous and moon types

(experimental) Trait scanning mechanics

Spacecraft System failures

Spacecraft Construction Editor. This is quite a large task. I've looked into implementing the editor and came to the conclusion I need to do more research & requirements refining for an effective implementation
